153 Houston Methodist Hospital employees were officially out of a job Tuesday, 10 days after a judge dismissed a lawsuit against the hospital by employees who opposed a Covid-19 vaccine mandate as a condition of employment.
Workers are protected from termination under Texas law only if they refuse to commit a criminal act that carries criminal penalties.

His illness was more severe than the White House acknowledged at the time. Advisers thought it would alter his response to the pandemic. They were wrong.
FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn received a request from a top White House official for a case with great urgency: Could he get the FDA to sign off on a compassionate-use authorization for a monoclonal antibody right away?
The White House wanted Hahn to say yes within hours. Hahn, who did not know who the application was for, consulted career officials. The FDA needs to go by the book, the officials insisted. Hahn relayed the message back to the White House. They kept pressing him to effectively cut corners.
When Hahn learned the effort was on behalf of the president, he was stunned. For God’s sake, it’s the president who’s sick, and you want us to bend the rules? Trump was in the highest-risk category for severe disease from covid-19 — at 74, he rarely exercised and was considered medically obese. He was the type of patient with whom you would want to be cautious before prescribing an experimental drug.
A five-day stretch, October 1 - 5, 2020 — from the moment White House officials began an extraordinary effort to get Trump lifesaving drugs to the day the president returned to the White House from the hospital — marked a dramatic turning point in the nation’s flailing coronavirus response. Trump’s brush with severe illness and the prospect of death caught the White House so unprepared that they had not even briefed Vice President Mike Pence’s team on a plan to swear him in if Trump became incapacitated.
The president had flouted safety protocols by holding big rallies and packing the White House with maskless guests. One month before the November 3rd election, the virus had already killed more than 200,000 Americans. Trump’s contempt for face coverings had turned into White House policy. He asked aides who wore them in his presence to take them off. If someone was going to do a news conference with him, he made clear that he or she was not to wear a mask by his side.
Trump’s medical advisers hoped his bout with the coronavirus would inspire him to take the virus seriously. Perhaps he would encourage Americans to wear masks and put his health and medical officials front and center in the response. Instead, Trump emerged from the experience triumphant and ever more defiant. He urged people not to be afraid of the virus or let it dominate their lives, disregarding that he had had access to health care and treatments unavailable to other Americans.
It was, several advisers said, the last chance to turn the response around. And once the opportunity passed, it was the point of no return.

According to "Nightmare Scenario" Trump was so upset by the idea that these people would "double his numbers" that he asked his staff if there wasn't "an island we own" that we could send them to and he asked more than once about the possibility of sending them to Guantánamo. The staff finally got the idea scuttled but because they were all just as shallow and self-serving as he was, they did it not because it was grotesquely inhumane but because they were "worried about a backlash over quarantining American tourists on the same Caribbean base where the United States holds terrorism suspects." They had a point. Sending sick old people to a terrorist prison camp is pretty bad optics.
The "numbers" continued to anger Trump. He demanded that the officials who allowed the cruise passengers into the US be fired (it didn't happen) and when he said at his infamous Tulsa Oklahoma rally back in June of 2020, "when you do testing to that extent, you're gonna find more cases. So I said to my people, slow the testing down please" — he was not joking. The book quotes Trump having a tantrum over the phone to Health and Human Services Director Alex Azar, saying "Testing is killing me! I'm going to lose the election because of testing! What idiot had the federal government do testing?" (Azar replied, hilariously, "Uh, do you mean Jared?")
This response was a trainwreck in every way, mostly because of Trump's ignorance which made his decisions erratic and ineffectual, which I suspect also led to the magical thinking that had him demanding that everyone be a cheerleader and if you just tell people that everything is fine, it will be. He's quoted as saying to his team, "I am sick and tired of how negative you all are. .?.?. I spend half of my day responding to what Tony Fauci has to say, and I'm the president of the United States!" He told Dr. Deborah Birx, "Every time you talk, I get depressed. You have to stop that."

Pandemic contradictions: a sign of false information

One of the reasons false information and pandemic rumors can be so confusing and exhausting is the high degree of self-contradiction. Granted, not everyone believes every rumor simultaneously, but overall self-contradiction is often a hallmark of inaccurate information, and exposure to many different self-contradicting narratives (often with lots of emotion attached to them) can be highly disorienting and confusing. Here are a few examples I’ve run into over the last year:
“Spike protein shedding from vaccination makes it dangerous to be around vaccinated people” and “spike protein shedding from COVID infection is no big deal and there’s no need to social distance or wear a mask.”
“SARS-CoV-2 is not that dangerous” and “SARS-COV-2 is so good at making humans sick that it was clearly engineered.”
“A ~1% death rate from COVID is not a big deal” and “an extremely rare (<0.001%) nonfatal side effect from a vaccine is a very big deal.”
“If a 75-year-old with pre-existing conditions gets COVID and dies from pneumonia 4 days later, COVID was not the true cause” and “if a 75-year-old with pre-existing conditions gets the vaccine and dies from pneumonia 4 days later, the vaccine was definitely the true cause.”
“Most COVID cases are false positives” and “the case fatality rate is overestimated.” (If there were, in fact, fewer true COVID cases due to false positives, that would make the case fatality rate much higher.)
“Saying that ‘COVID is dangerous’ is fear-mongering” and “saying that ‘there is a massive network of elites who are secretly conspiring to take over the world by introducing a genetically engineered virus and forced vaccination with microchips’ is not fear-mongering.”
“The SARS-CoV-2 spike protein is dangerous” and “SARS-CoV-2 is not dangerous.”
“Foreign, non-replicating RNA from the vaccine inside human cells is dangerous” and “foreign, self-replicating RNA from the virus inside human cells is not a big deal.”
“Immune systems are naturally strong; they can handle the virus without help from the vaccine” and “immune systems can’t handle masks.”
“An observational study of ~30 people is enough to justify giving hydroxychloroquine for COVID” and “A randomized, blinded placebo-controlled trial of ~30,000 people is not large enough to justify giving the vaccine.”

Missouri has been the US bellwether for the onset of the “Delta” variant of COVID. Which makes the below graph by Charles Gaba of infection rates by county for June in Missouri particularly insightful:
As has been usual, partisanship, which has correlated highly with vaccinations, in turn also has a strong relationship with the rate of new infections. But more importantly, note just how high an infection level some of the least vaccinated counties have had in June. Many of them are over 0.5% of population newly infected in June, and a few are over 1% - this with “Delta” just getting underway.
If Missouri’s rate continues to rise (and, as we’ll see below, there is every reason to expect that to happen), then COVID is going to burn through Missouri’s (and other similarly situated States’) population in the next few months like a forest fire exploding uphill.

Pick any county in any red state and compare the unvaccinated rate (unvaccinated rate = 100 – vaccinated rate) with the percent of those in the county who voted for Trump (no statistical training needed).

Why the almost direct correlation between those who voted for Trump and those who didn’t get a COVID vaccination? Is it that those least likely to have been vaccinated live in the more remote rural counties that are more likely to lack access to healthcare? You need to understand how DNA, RNA, and viruses work.
DNA makes up your "genes". It exists as chromosomes in the cell nucleus. But DNA does not DIRECTLY make proteins.
What DNA does is make RNA, which is transported to another cellular structure outside of the nucleus, called ribosomes. There, the RNA provides the instruction set for the ribosomes to make proteins (which are the functional parts that make your cells work).
This indirect translation from DNA to RNA protects the DNA from being degraded even if it is used over and over again.
If you remember nothing else, remember this: DNA MAKES RNA, AND RNA MAKES PROTEIN.
Now, SOME viruses insert themselves directly into your DNA, the cheeky bastards, and hijack that protein-making process directly to make more of ITSELF, until the infected cell literally explodes and dies.
mRNA vaccines short-circuit the process. They don't involve DNA at all. The go directly to the ribosomes, and instruct the ribosomes to make small bits of viral protein which your immune system will "learn" and react to.
In many ways, mRNA is safer than other vaccine technologies, altho it may be less effective.

The earliest information was that SARS-CoV-2 was a novel virus responded to with severe measures by the Chinese (lockdown, cordon sanitaire, forcible separation of the infected from everyone else, instant hospitals), whose closest virus-relative SARS-CoV-(1) has an up to 50% case fatality ratio. Looking at how China responded, as the first nation to experience a significant outbreak, should have given anybody concerns. All early indications were that it could end up as an extreme pandemic. Even now, with a more accurate case-fatality ratio for SARS-CoV-2 of 1.0-1.5% in a general western population (and up to 10% in Mexico and 19% in Yemen), it's still concerning. And cloth or paper masks protect the environment and people from larger particles, which is why OR personnel wear them - to protect the patients. Then Fauci later backtracked and claimed that he was trying to keep a supply available for 'medicals'. But he lied about an inconvenient truth. And IMO you need to tell the truth, even if it's complicated, and nuanced, and unhappy, to be credible.
The second major loss of creditably came when he shaded, or failed to correct, the impressionism about vaccines being 95% effective. Most people assumed that meant effective against infection. But the original endpoints were hospitalizations and deaths. That caveat was only later addressed - indirectly - when the news started announcing that the vaccines were ~95% effective against infection. I'm sure that caused a few gaslight moments - when people were confused over what they thought they originally understood.
Whether or not the virus could be laboratory-based was another huge divot.
And whether or not the US was involved-in, or funding, gain-of-function research was another.
All in all, Fauci came across as shady, and single-handedly cost science and medicine their credibility in, I think, A LOT of peoples' minds.

Maybe N95 masks work, but almost nobody was ever wearing them. I got a cheap 5 pack of washables from China. My old man just put a rag on his face. I rarely ever saw somebody wearing N95.

The German physicist Max Planck said that science advances one funeral at a time. Or more precisely: “A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.”
Richard Thaler of the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, who won the Nobel Prize in economics on Oct. 9, exemplifies Planck’s observation.
Early in Thaler’s career, he had a hard time getting the establishment to take him seriously. Mainstream economists clung to a model in which human beings were rational and farsighted. The top journals rejected papers by Thaler that pointed to the all-too-human foibles of real people. His thesis adviser “was unimpressed and told me to go back to running regressions,” Thaler recalled in a 2013 interview with a Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis publication. It took 20 years for the old guard to give way to a new one.
Why do scientists sometimes seem to resist new ideas? On the day Thaler got his Nobel, I interviewed Pierre Azoulay, co-author of a research paper called Does Science Advance One Funeral at a Time? He and his co-authors found that at least in the case of life sciences, Planck’s epigram about funerals is correct. Here’s the synopsis:
Consistent with previous research, the flow of articles by collaborators into affected fields decreases precipitously after the death of a star scientist (relative to control fields). In contrast, we find that the flow of articles by non-collaborators increases by 8% on average. These additional contributions are disproportionately likely to be highly cited. They are also more likely to be authored by scientists who were not previously active in the deceased superstar's field. Overall, these results suggest that outsiders are reluctant to challenge leadership within a field when the star is alive and that a number of barriers may constrain entry even after she is gone. Intellectual, social, and re-source barriers all impede entry, with outsiders only entering subfields that offer a less hostile landscape for the support and acceptance of “foreign” ideas.
To put it differently, Azoulay found that the death of a star scientist is like the fall of a huge tree. It lets sunshine reach the forest floor through a hole in the leaf canopy, enabling new kinds of vegetation to flourish.
Azoulay, a native of France, teaches innovation and entrepreneurship at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management. He said that by time he started working on his Ph.D. in the late 1990s, Thaler’s ideas were already well into the academic mainstream. Thaler was even elected president of the American Economic Association in 2015. In Azoulay’s opinion, Thaler’s ongoing portrayal of himself as a renegade is “a very clever marketing strategy.”
But Azoulay concedes that early in his career, Thaler really did have to fight an uphill battle. “Some of his ideas were blocked for a little bit longer than a benevolent, all-knowing social planner would have liked,” Azoulay said.
The economists who resisted Thaler’s way of thinking didn’t necessarily die, but they did relinquish their grip on the scholarly journals and professorships that are the commanding heights of academics. A good example
