The frank and generally constructive conversation that took place at the June 16, 2021 summit meeting between presidents Vladimir Putin and Joseph Biden in Geneva resulted in an agreement to launch a substantive dialogue on strategic stability, reaffirming the crucial premise that nuclear war is unacceptable. The two sides also reached an understanding on the advisability of engaging in consultations on cybersecurity, the operation of diplomatic missions, the fate of imprisoned Russian and US citizens and a number of regional conflicts.
The Russian leader made it clear, including in his public statements, that finding a mutually acceptable balance of interests strictly on a parity basis is the only way to deliver … The Russian leader made it clear, including in his public statements, that finding a mutually acceptable balance of interests strictly on a parity basis is the only way to deliver on any of these tracks. There were no objections during the talks. However, in their immediate aftermath, US officials, including those who participated in the Geneva meeting, started asserting what seemed to be foregone tenets, perorating that they had “made it clear” to Moscow, “warned it, and stated their demands.” Moreover, all these “warnings” went hand in hand with threats: if Moscow does not accept the “rules of the road” set forth in Geneva in a matter of several months, it would come under renewed pressure.
Of course, it has yet to be seen how the consultations to define specific ways for fulfilling the Geneva understandings as mentioned above will proceed. As Vladimir Putin said during his news conference following the talks, “we have a lot to work on.” That said, it is telling that Washington’s ineradicable position was voiced immediately following the talks, especially since European capitals immediately took heed of the Big Brother’s sentiment and picked up the tune with much gusto and relish. The gist of their statements is that they are ready to normalise their relations with Moscow, but only after it changes the way it behaves.
It is as if a choir has been pre-arranged to sing along with the lead vocalist. It seems that this was what the series of high-level Western events in the build-up to the Russia-US talks was all about: the Group of Seven Summit in Cornwall, UK, the NATO Summit in Brussels, as well as Joseph Biden’s meeting with President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
These meetings were carefully prepared in a way that leaves no doubt that the West wanted to send a clear message: it stands united like never before and will do what it believes to be right in international affairs, while forcing others, primarily Russia and China, to follow its lead. The documents adopted at the Cornwall and Brussels summits cemented the rules-based world order concept as a counterweight to the universal principles of international law with the UN Charter as its primary source.
In doing so, the West deliberately shies away from spelling out the rules it purports to follow, just as it refrains from explaining why they are needed. After all, there are already thousands of universal international legal instruments setting out clear national commitments and transparent verification mechanisms. The beauty of these Western “rules” lies precisely in the fact that they lack any specific content. When someone acts against the will of the West, it immediately responds with a groundless claim that “the rules have been broken” (without bothering to present any evidence) and declares its “right to hold the perpetrators accountable.” The less specific they get, the freer their hand to carry on with the arbitrary practice of employing dirty tactics as a way to pressure competitors. During the so-called “wild

All of this matches SIG's playbook here and Putin's globally; exactly.
The men behind zero hedge
Colin Lokey, a 32-year-old former Seeking Alpha director
Daniel Ivandjiiski, a 37-year-old Bulgarian-born former hedge fund employee who was barred for insider trading in 2008
Tim Backshall, a 45-year-old credit derivatives strategist
Despite its populist tone, Lokey told Bloomberg he recently left Zero Hedge because he didn’t see eye-to-eye with the others when it came to editorial vision.
“Zero Hedge ceased to serve that public service years ago,” Lokey said. “They care what generates page views. Clicks. Money.”
In addition, Lokey said he faced constant pressure to frame stories in-line with a particular world-view, which he described as “Russia=good. Obama=idiot. Bashar al-Assad=benevolent leader. John Kerry=dunce. Vladmir Putin=greatest leader in the history of statecraft.”
Lokey claims Zero Hedge’s focus on traffic and revenue is hypocritical, but Ivandjiiski sees things differently.
Finally, Zero Hedge addressed the accusations of systematic bias in its content.
“We are certainly ok with being the object of other’s conspiracy theories, in this case completely false ones since we have never been in contact with anyone in Russia, or the US, or any government for that matter,” Zero Hedge says.
The site claims it has never accepted a dime of funding outside of advertising revenue and that Lokey was never pressured about how to frame his articles or editorialized.

According to the Bloomberg article, three men have been churning out all of the content at Zero Hedge, using the joint pseudonym “Tyler Durden” from the Brad Pitt film “Fight Club.” The 1999 cult film, according to Rolling Stone, is “about being young, male and powerless against the pacifying drug of consumerism. It’s about solitude, despair and bottled-up rage.” That ethos is frequently on display at Zero Hedge.
The three “Tyler Durdens” outed by Bloomberg reporters are Colin Lokey, who has now left Zero Hedge in a fit of pique and is responsible for handing over the internal chat sessions from Zero Hedge on traffic-building strategies and other matters. Bloomberg says “the other two men are Daniel Ivandjiiski, 37, the Bulgarian-born former analyst long reputed to be behind the site, and Tim Backshall, 45, a well-known credit derivatives strategist.”
The article notes that “Ivandjiiski has a multimillion-dollar mansion in Mahwah, N.J., and Backshall lives in a plush San Francisco suburb,” suggesting these are “not exactly reflections” of the anti-capitalism reflected in the moniker “Tyler Durden.”

Crying wolf in the Ukraine (again)
The Saker
July 05, 2021
I have to admit that before I sat down to write this column I had some misgivings: I thought “not *another* article warning about a potential explosion in the Ukraine! Not again!”. And yet, events on the ground are what they are and ignoring them under the pretext that I am fed up “crying wolf” again and again is not a wise solution either. I will try to keep it short though. First, let me provide you a quick summary of what has been happening in the Ukraine since my last column about the Ukraine on June 28th.
As most of you know, NATO and the Ukraine have been conducting maneuvers on the Black Sea, air and land called “Sea Breeze”. This is nothing new, but this year these maneuvers attracted more countries than usual, see for yourself:
Officially, 32 countries from six continents providing 5,000 troops, 32 ships, 40 aircraft, and 18 special operations and dive teams are participating in this exercise: Albania, Australia, Brazil, [Brazil???] Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, [Egypt???] Estonia, France, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, [Japan???] Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Morocco[???] Norway, Pakistan, [???] Poland, Romania, Senegal,[???] Spain, South Korea, [???] Sweden, Tunisia, [???] Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates,[???] United Kingdom, and the United States.
Kristina Kvien, the chargé d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, declared that “USS Ross‘ participation in this year’s Sea Breeze maritime exercise is a tangible demonstration of U.S. support for Ukraine and is necessary now more than ever (…) it is part of the enduring commitment that the United States and our NATO Allied and partner nations have made since 1997 to enhance maritime security in the Black Sea”.
Now here are a few examples of what the Ukies are saying:
* Let’s see if the accursed Moskals will dare to shoot at the Ross which (at least according to the Ukies) can sink the entire Russian Black Sea Fleet with one salvo of its super-dooper Tomahawk missiles.
*The Ukraine now has missiles which can bring down the bridge over the Kerch Strait.
*The USA is delivering us fast attack boats while Turkey is giving us Bairaktar drones – with those we will liberate Crimea and the Donbass from the accused Moskal’.
*The Ukrainian military is now the best in Europe (in fact, it protects the entire EU from assaults by the Russian hordes) and it will make minced meat of the Russians for sure the next time around.
*In their current format, the Minsk Agreements are dead and we will never implement them. If the Moskal’ refuse to amend them then we also have a plan B: to build a big wall and totally cut all our ties with Russia. Either that, or we will liberate Crimea and the Donbass manu militari!
*The next time the accursed Moskal’ try to prevent a Ukie vessel from traversing the Kerch Strait we will sink any force trying to stop us.
[SAKER, Sidebar: keep in mind that all TV channels which are not controlled by Ze have now been banned. The Ukie Rada passed a law declaring that Russians are not native to the Ukraine (makes me wonder where they came from, outer space I suppose). All the main leaders of the rather uninspiring opposition are constantly harassed or even kept under house arrest. All this is to say that the insane examples of what the Ukronazis are saying above is not some minority of hardcore delusional Ukronazis – this is what many of the members of the party of Ze (and others!) are openly saying 24/7.]
Now, let’s cut to the chase and see what is really going on!
Official White House
We want to contain Russia, maintain a dialog where it is in the interests of the USA and we will defend our friends and values in the region and the whole world
US/NAT/EU officials
We will resist any Russian provocation or use of force, we have the means to force Russia to renounce her plans to rebuild the Soviet Union.

The Kremlin is paranoid
Military developments in the Black Sea accompanied by hyperbolic statements from Russian officials highlight growing fears in the Kremlin over Russia’s future.
NATO exercises in the Black Sea demonstrate that these waters are not Putin's private lake. In fact, it bears noting that Russia’s share of the Black Sea coastline is less than 10%. Three NATO states (Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania) possess almost 57% of the total coastline, with NATO partners Ukraine and Georgia holding the rest. Despite NATO’s geographical advantage, Moscow is engaged in an extensive military buildup to control sea lanes, maritime economic zones, and energy deposits.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia is tracking a Spanish naval ship in the Black Sea, the Interfax news agency cited Russia's defence ministry as saying on Wednesday, as Ukraine and NATO countries both held military drills in the area.
The ministry said the Spanish ship had entered the Black Sea on Wednesday to take part in the Sea Breeze 2021 military drills, which started late last month in the Black Sea and southern Ukraine and involve more than 30 countries.
Two Russian Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets also escorted a foreign reconnaissance aircraft, a Boeing P-8 Poseidon, over the Black Sea, Interfax reported, citing the ministry.

I know that some nations routinely hold joint military exercises, like Russia and China, and I used to wonder about their utility, until I thought about the difficulty of meshing different armedforced together into an effective fighting unit.
Is there ONE Commander, with everyone taking orders from him/her? Is there a joint command structure, with a kind of "division of labor", where roles are assigned? (I can't imagine that being very effective, bc if the situation changes and roles need to be modified, the negotiations would change under battlefield conditions. But for, yanno, political reasons I also can't imagine some nations taking a subordinate role, so...)
Also the logistics. Supply lines and supplies specifically. Some supplies, like diesel, are generically useful, but most nations have different armaments, or different generations, that require different munitions. So every participant has to bring their own supplies.
And then there's the commutation problem everyone has to be on the same frequency. Think that isn't a problem? Our firefighters and police were on different frequencies for 911, and it bollixed response.
Plus, everyone needs to speak the same language.
I looked at the list of nations in that Black Sea exercise, and I see that MANY of them have no strategic, geopolitical, economic, alliance, or military reason to be there.
Brazil?? Morocco?? Japan?? S Korea?? Pakistan??

Black Sea drills showcase strong NATO-Ukraine defense ties
ABOARD USS ROSS (AP) — Ukraine and NATO have conducted Black Sea drills involving dozens of warships in a two-week show of their strong defense ties and capability following a confrontation between Russia’s military forces and a British destroyer off Crimea last month.
The Sea Breeze 2021 maneuvers that ended Saturday involved about 30 warships and 40 aircraft from NATO members and Ukraine. The captain of the USS Ross, a U.S. Navy destroyer that took part in the drills, said the exercise was designed to improve how the equipment and personnel of the participating nations operate together.
“We’d like to demonstrate to everybody, the international community, that no one nation can claim the Black Sea or any international body of water,” Cmdr. John D. John said aboard the guided missile destroyer previously deployed to the area for drills. “Those bodies of water belong to the international community, and we’re committed to ensure that all nations have access to international waterways.”
The Russian Defense Ministry said it was closely monitoring Sea Breeze. The Russian military also conducted a series of parallel drills in the Black Sea and southwestern Russia, with warplanes practicing bombing runs and long-range air defense missiles’ deploying to protect the coast.
Last month, Russia said one of its warships in the Black Sea fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs in the path of the HMS Defender, a British Royal Navy destroyer, to chase it away from an area near Crimea that Moscow claims as its territorial waters.
Russia denounced the Defender’s maneuver as a provocation and warned that next time it might fire to hit intruding warships.
Britain, which like most other nations didn’t recognize Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, insisted the Defender wasn’t fired upon on June 23 and said it was sailing in Ukrainian waters when Russia sent its planes into the air and shots were heard during the showdown.
The incident added to the tensions between Russia and the NATO allies. Relations between Russia and the West have sunk to post-Cold War lows over Moscow’s annexation of Crimea, its support for a separatist insurgency in eastern Ukraine, accusations of Russian hacking attacks, election interference and other irritants.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that the incident with the Defender wouldn’t have triggered a global conflict even if Russia had sunk the British vessel because the West knows it can’t win such a war. The statement appeared to indicate Putin’s resolve to raise the stakes should a similar incident happen again.
Aboard the Ross, John said the Sea Breeze participants were exercising their right to operate in international waters. He described the drills as “a tangible demonstration of our commitment to each other for a safe and stable Black Sea region.”

Well, I doubt anything THAT drastic happened, but the coordination nightmare between so many different languages and systems must have been something. I'll think if they managed to make it from one side of the Black Sea to the other without running into each other would have been considered a success.
I have to wonder why the USA called/twisted arms of so many irrelevant nations into the exercise. It's not like Morocco or Brazil or S Korea or Japan are ACTUALLY going to be fighting Russia in the Black Sea. All I can figure is that this was a Big Political Statement to China (not Russia) indicating who would be fighting in the Taiwan Straits (Japan, S Korea) if push came to shove. No idea what some of those ancillary ships are, unless they are also statements about the Suez Canal (Egypt) and maybe the Straits of Gibralter (Morocco).
AFA that incursion by the British and Dutch ships, I think it was to monitor Russian reaction, suss out their radar stations, defense emplacements, and communications. But since Russia didn't really bring out its big guns (or in this case, missiles) I doubt that NATO military got much to look at.
It was, as the article calls it, a "two week show". Also:
Quote:but videos say otherwise. Strange gap in the reporting not to mention that, eh?
Britain, which like most other nations didn’t recognize Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, insisted the Defender wasn’t fired upon
It was a curious show, all in all.

British Warship Deliberately Sailed Close to Crimea, U.K. Officials Say
The action, meant to demonstrate support for Ukraine, incited an international incident after Russia scrambled warplanes and Coast Guard vessels.
KYIV, Ukraine — When the British destroyer H.M.S. Defender sailed near the coast of Crimea on Wednesday, it was supposed to be quietly demonstrating that the waters legally belonged to Ukraine despite Russia’s annexation of the Black Sea peninsula seven years ago, which has never been recognized internationally.

This is a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative, claiming that NATO is waging an aggressive campaign against Russia.
NATO exercises are not aimed against Russia. Their aim is to enhance mutual defence capabilities and make the situation in the region more stable. Since NATO is a military organisation, it is obvious that it stages war games, such as Defender 2021, from time to time. However, it is also a political alliance that promotes democratic values and enables its members to consult and cooperate on defence and security-related issues to solve problems, build trust and, in the long run, prevent conflict.
It is Russia that is continually militarising the region. Since 2014, it has been widely criticised for staging provocative military exercises along Ukraine’s border and in the vicinity of the Baltic nations, which are NATO members. In response to this criticism, Russia says it has the right to stage war games in its territory. At the same time, Moscow is blasting NATO for staging joint military exercises, which in fact pose no threat to anyone in the region.
Concerning the promises made to Gorbachev, the statement has been debunked numerous times. NATO did not promise not to expand into eastern and central Europe back in 1990, which was confirmed by the former president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev. Back in 2014, Gorbachev said:
"The topic of ‘NATO expansion’ was not discussed at all, and it wasn’t brought up in those years. I say this with full responsibility."
Moreover, the claim about NATO "expansion" misrepresents the process of NATO enlargement. NATO does not "expand" but considers the applications of candidate countries that want to join.
See more narratives about NATO’s alleged belligerent agenda against Russia.
This disinformation message appeared in the same article as the claim that Crimea was annexed as the result of the US-financed coup in Ukraine.

Here, BTW, is discussion of international law during peace AND conflict, by a Lithuanian (no friend to Russia!)
Quote:You may recall... oh, you don't, bc you know nothing about anything ... that the concept of OCCUPATION WATERS has already been discussed. The USA declared certain waters arund Iraq no-go zones after we occupied Iraq, and Britain declared the entire Falklands coast to be occupied waters and sank an Argentinian cruiser Belgrano, killing 300.
The awareness that war and peace are continuous, rather than discrete, fields of human endeavor have given rise to the idea that they may blend into each other, producing a gray zone that is neither truly war nor truly peace. These trends gave rise to the concept of gray zone conflict. This notion is marked by ambiguity on the nature of the conflict and the legal status of the parties, which in turn generates uncertainty about the applicable law. In the legal practice, the threshold between war and peace and their attendant regulatory frameworks is not as firm as the law may suggest. Confirmation of this was the Kerch incident on 25 November 2018 when Russia hindered passage against Ukrainian warships through occupation waters of the Black Sea around the Crimea peninsula, and the Kerch Strait to enter the ports of the Azov Sea.
https://www.warhistoryonline.com/news/hms-conqueror.html
So America and Britain claiming that Russia is "violating international law" is the pot calling the kettle black. Yanno, the usual hypocrisy.

BTW I found this of historic interest, providing context for the current laws of naval warfare and occupation. Here is one example
Quote:
America’s World War II contest with Japan put an end to America’s traditional view of freedom of the seas. As historian Joel Ira Holwitt writes, the order to conduct unrestricted submarine warfare against Japan, targeting “all Japanese shipping, from fishing trawlers to freighters to tankers,” issued on 7 December 1941, was “a major and dramatic change to the American attitude toward freedom of the seas.”2 In World War II, the U.S. Navy exercised the type of unrestricted submarine warfare the United States had condemned in Germany in World War I.
Today, U.S. naval officers will find instruction on the rights of belligerents and the rights of neutrals in The Commander’s Handbook on the Law of Naval Operations (NWP 1-14M/MCWP 5-12.1/COMDTPUB P5800.7A, Edition July 2007 [Washington, D.C.: 2007]), which is an update of the Law of Naval Warfare, promulgated by the Navy Department in 1955. The 1955 volume in the U.S. Naval War College’s International Law Studies series, The Law of War and Neutrality at Sea, by Robert W. Tucker, is a commentary on the Law of Naval Warfare. Tucker’s main concern in writing the 1955 Naval War College volume was to explore the relationship between modern belligerent practices and the traditional law of naval warfare. He concludes that the modern practice of sinking enemy merchantmen without warning is in accord with the principles behind the traditional law. The standard international law texts, Grotius, Vattel, and others, were written during an era in which merchant vessels did not pose a serious threat to warships, and therefore the accepted practice was to require a belligerent warship, before firing on an enemy merchantman, to identify itself and give the enemy merchant ship a chance to surrender.

However, the Air Force is optimistic that Self-protect High Energy Laser can be shrunk to a small pod that could be tested on an F-15 fighter by this year and eventually integrated also integrated into F-16 and F-35 single-engine fighters. Some sources suggest the system may see its first flight tests on C-17 or C-130 cargo planes.

Lasers are like really, really long-range bullets.
If you fire a bullet in a city or a suburb AND YOU MISS YOUR TARGET, the bullet will for sure hit something or someone else. It's only when you get way out into the rural areas that a bullet might eventually run out of kinetic energy, and fall harmlessly to the ground.
A laser that misses its target could hit something unintended. Maybe a person. Maybe a building. Maybe a civilian aircraft. The only way to TRY to not hit something in the background is to always aim away from the earth, or at the very least above the horizon. I'm sure in combat people will be careful of that. But even if you are careful, of course, you might hit a satellite, or the ISS, or the moon ...
Laser weapons - what a stupid idea.

Laser weapons systems are fitted with maps of the ground and location of aircraft as well as orbital parameters of spacecraft. If the beam gets too close to something that you want to avoid, the beam is automatically shut down using a system called predictive avoidance.
If it is say a shot from ground to air and its a miss, then the laser energy is lost, dispersed into the atmosphere and into space.

The F-35 has a very long range tracking system. Now, the only way the S-500 can find it to shoot it down is to turn on. Even then it can't really track it. The F-35 has the RCS of a golf ball. Because of decoys it will also look like there are a thousand of them or with radar jamming none at all. Once the S-500 does turn on it can be located, attacked and destroyed from any direction. Even several at once. That includes space.
Also comrade Signym, a jet like the F-35 can control several air to surface long range missiles at a time from a distance to far for even the S-500 to shoot down. One scenario would be for an F-15 to fire off the missiles and the F-35 guide them in. Another is for a drone to fly close, launch its missiles and again the F-35 guide them in. The ways it can happen is limited only by ones imagination. Hey, maybe the F-35 can send the location of a missile defense site to land artillery and have them take it out? What do ya think?

The Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) is highly anticipated over the SDB I because of its tri-mode seeker capability. Each munition will be able to guide towards its target using laser, imaging infrared or radar homing, or a combination of these modes (embedded GPS/INS, which is how the SDB I navigated to its target, is actually a 4th mode for stationary targets). This will allow SDB IIs to hit moving targets as well as stationary ones in any weather, day or night, at standoff ranges, with incredible reliability and precision.

Russia Tests ‘Invisible’ Radar to Dodge Enemy Detection, Developer Says
June 28, 2019
Ranger / Wikicommons
Russia has tested a new radar system that can evade detection by enemy drones or aircraft, its developer told the state-run RIA Novosti news agency on Friday.
Passive radars operate without a transmitter, instead receiving signals from other objects to track targets. Russia’s new passive radar, called Tropa (Russian for “path”), uses communication towers to locate signals without transmitting one itself, RIA Novosti reported.

I was hoping that the videos would be more informative, but they lacked important details ... like WHAT and HOW.
For example ... Russian engine failure on the SU35... what kinds of failures were they? The video claims to know the percentage of the engines returned because of defects, but doesn't know what kinds of defects they were? These were INDIAN-purchased engines. Surely, INDIA knows what went wrong!
The audio then blathers on that the "engine is the heart of the jet".
Really?
Like nobody knows that?
Similar to the video on the "anti-radiation" missile. It makes a big deal about how it was delivered early for testing ... they repeat that at least three times! ... but doesn't go into detail about HOW it can locate a radar station even if the radar is turned off, "or [it] begins to move". The only thing I can think of is that rather than using the radar continuously as a homing beacon, it sets a GPS target and then flies to that.
Next time, could you please post videos with less advert and more info?
Thanks.

Russia's state-owned news service, TASS, has published an extraordinarily defamatory article about NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor. The publication claims that Auñón-Chancellor had an emotional breakdown in space, then damaged a Russian spacecraft in order to return early. This, of course, is a complete fabrication.
The context for the article is the recent, near-disastrous docking of the Russian Nauka science module with the International Space Station. The TASS article attempts to rebut criticism in US publications (including Ars Technica) that covered the incident.
https://arstechnica.com/science/2021/08/russias-space-program-just-thr
ew-a-nasa-astronaut-under-the-bus/
Flight controllers at NASA and Roscosmos averted a disaster on Thursday (July 28, 2021) after a large Russian module docked with the International Space Station and began to "inadvertently" fire its thrusters.
The Russian "Nauka" module linked to the space station at 8:30 am CT (13:30 UTC), local time in Houston, where NASA's Mission Control is based. After that, Russian cosmonauts aboard the station began preparing to open the hatches leading to Nauka, but at 11:34 am Houston time, Nauka unexpectedly started to fire its movement thrusters.
Within minutes, the space station began to lose attitude control. This was a problem for several reasons. First of all, the station requires a certain attitude to maintain signal with geostationary satellites and talk to Mission Control on the ground. Also, solar arrays are positioned to collect power based upon this predetermined attitude.
Another concern is G forces on the station's structure. The various components of the extensive space station were assembled in microgravity and designed to operate at zero-G. So even small stresses on the vehicle can induce small cracks or other problems with the station's structure.
For all of these reasons, space station flight controllers in Houston and Moscow acted quickly after the station started to drift. Attitude control was fully lost at 11:42 am, and engines on the space station's service module were fired. This was followed by a handover to the Russian Progress vehicle attached to the station, which began to fire its thrusters. This tug-of-war offset the Nauka module thruster activity, which eventually stopped after fuel supplies were exhausted. By 12:29 pm on Thursday, attitude control was restored. It made for quite an hour on the ground and in space.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled Tuesday that the Russian government was responsible for the death of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko in 2006, sparking further questions about the Kremlin’s role in poisoning its opponents, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The court found that Russian agents Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitry Kovtun were assigned to assassinate Litvinenko, who died after drinking tea laced with polonium-210, a deadly radioactive isotope, at a bar in London.
The ECHR added that the Russian government had failed to provide “any other satisfactory and convincing explanation of the events.”
The Kremlin called the court’s ruling baseless and denied any involvement. Lugovoi, who is currently a lawmaker in Russia’s State Duma, said the judgment was “wrongful, unlawful and politically biased.”
The verdict opens up more questions about the death of Litvinenko, a fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The former Russian agent – who had fled Russia to Britain – had accused Putin of coming to power by organizing a series of apartment bombings in 1999. The attack eventually led to Russia’s invasion of Chechnya.
Meanwhile, British authorities have charged a third Russian agent for the 2018 chemical attack in Salisbury that targeted former Soviet spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, according to the Evening Standard.
Officials have already charged two men whom they allege were officers of the Russian military service.
The Kremlin, again, has denied any involvement.

Why Putin’s Money Eludes Offshore Investigators
The Pandora Papers’ findings suggest that Russian kleptocrats are relying less on the West as a financial haven.
Although the Pandora Papers are far from a complete or even statistically representative reflection of the global shell company industry, the relative thinness of these findings suggests that Putin and his people have drawn conclusions from previous revelations, such as the Panama Papers, which lent international prominence to Putin’s cellist friend Sergei Roldugin and his remarkably active offshore companies. It also indicates that the widespread narrative of the Russian kleptocracy’s dependence on the West as a safe haven for its capital may well be inaccurate in 2021 — or indeed, may have missed the point for years.
