Hey! I know what we need from Canada! Instead of an oil pipeline how about a water pipeline?

I know KIKI brought this up already but... can you imagine looking for leaks in a water pipeline?

Instead of looking for nasty black oil slicks, you'd be looking for unexpected green oases! Wouldn't THAT be a pleasant finding?

Back from mah jong fun morning but alas no luck. Managed to go out about 3 or 4 times but lousy scores. I had one decent hand with Winds and Dragons in it which netted me over 1,000 points. So this morning total was over 3,000 points.

Oh well.

Now, if the rain would stop. Had to wear my boots today because of it.

Used up the last of my wood putty today. I can't believe I finally figured out how to make that stuff last. I opened that up a year ago and it was still good.

I decided to give that old curio cabinet a proper restore that's up to my new standards. I did a fairly good job back in my drinking days with it, but nowhere near the level of the kitchen cabinets.

I was going to put new hinges on it, but I couldn't find anything in oil rubbed bronze that would work at the store and the prices were gross anyways. I'm not spending $30 on 4 hinges and 2 door latches.

I'll just give them the spraypaint treatment that I gave the interior kitchen hardware after scrubbing them clean.

It really is a nice old cabinet. I got it from a guy back when I worked at KMart. He had it out in his garage for decades, and it was in terrible shape when I first got it.

I'm going to move it out in the living room. I've got the perfect spot for it. That will free up the entire floor in the kitchen, so all I'll have there is the 2-seater table. Now that the garbage/recycle bins are under the countertop where the dishwasher used to be and the cabinet isn't there anymore, there will be plenty of room for the table and it will really open up the path between the kitchen and living room.

Once that's done, I can load it back up and get everything out of the pantry so I can start working on that.

I'm not sure if I'm just going to pull off the bad contact paper off of the shelves in there and paint them, or if I want to build it out with a better layout and some drawers or not.

Well... There seems to be one flaw in the preservation of the wood putty...

It hasn't been an issue until now, but since I was at the end of the product over the year+ of preserving it, there apparently was too much water in it. My experience with wood putty to this point was that it never suffered from the shrinkage that you'd get with caulk or joint compound (drywall patch).

But there was some shrinkage last night. Too much, acutally. Even when I sand it down on the sides of the deeper ruts, it will still be slightly pitted.

I did find another small wood putty container while moving all my stuff around, but that must have been bought many, many years ago. I'll have to open it and see if it's still any good. It should be enough to finish the job if it is.

SIX! Nice to see you back! I was wondering how you were getting on with the home renovation!

Hubby FINALLY noticed what a moldy nightmare the shower is, so we're going to have a shower and window replacement. No chance of this being DIY, tho! There may be some structural repairs required because I suspect the shower stall has been leaking into to floor and/ or walls for quite a while. (At one time I did chisel out and recaulk dear daughters shower, should have redone ours a long time ago.)

Anyway, looking at replacing three windows, and one shower stall. Also adding a powered vent and possibly replacing the tile floor, depending on what we find when the shower comes out.

Trying to talk hubby into going with solid surface bc, as I may have mentioned already, I hate grout!

Busy researching materials, costs, etc and looking for local contractors. Have two solid leads so far, and spike with a Corian rep but will probably go with Swanstone .. assuming it's not too pricey compared to tile ... bc Swanstone is a little less expensive but in some ways better.

Also been online looking at colors etc. Bc the room gets a lot of sunshine all day long, I think I need to tone it down with blue. Did the guest bedroom that way and every who has seen it thinks it's fabulous.

Think I managed to sort out ONE of my health problems ... possibly not enough salt!

Erratic heartbeat. Blood pressure jacking up and down. Profound lack of energy and depressed mood. Rapid weight loss. Spoke with Dr today and she told me to aim for AT LEAST 1500 mg/ day. I know I wasn't anywhere near that, so I'm aiming for 1/2 teaspoon (1200 mg) plus one Powerade Zero. Anything more is to the good

I hope this works.

The funny thing is, hubby went thru the same thing about 30 years ago. They did all kinds of sophisticated tests on him and tried all all kinds of meds, but I was the one who dxd and fixed the problem.

I think JSF thinks salt is poison, but someone should tell him it's a vital electrolyte required to maintain blood volume.

Just made the laziest gumbo ever. My inspiration was Norm's restaurant gumbo, which is a light soup but very tasty, so I didn't start out with a dark roux, just thickened it with flour afterwards.

Leftover cooked chicken (from chicken dumpling soup), beef smoked sausage (no hot seasoning for dear daughter!), celery, green pepper plus a little leftover red pepper, leftover frozen okra (next time I'll use more), thyme, smoked paprika, bay, broth, flour for thickening... Added pan fried onion and chipotle to hubby's bowl separately. Anyway it turned out great!

But I know sucralose is poison, and you said you are going to drink it.

Convinced hubby to let go of some dead Presidents and get the dog's teeth cleaned. It's remarkably expensive bc they have to sedate the dog. But then, they need to do an exam and blood work too, to make sure anesthesia is safe, so at least she's getting a thorough physical.

I scheduled this last AUGUST, IIRC, when we were having the house heat treated. Vet is incredibly booked up. But he's a good vet, handles animals very calmly as do his assistants, thorough and not too expensive compared to other vets. I found him thru one of my dog-walking friends.

The curio cabinet will be electrified.

I knew I wanted it out of the corner of the kitchen to free up all the room over there for a nice table and chairs now that the garbage and recycling go under the countertop where the dishwasher used to be... but the problem was that I've grown quite accustomed to using it there because there was a plug outlet tucked away in that corner that was as high as a standard light switch (the oddities of a tri-level home).

It really was the perfect place to put all of my electronics to charge via USB ports. It occurred to me that not only is there nothing like this wall outlet in the living room, but this unit not be in a corner and will be one of the first things you see when you come in the front door since it will be directly across from it. The idea of plopping a power strip with a thick cord (that would end up blocking easy access to the right door and the drawer action) from the outlet on the floor and around the front of the thing to use the it for the same purpose kind of made me wretch a bit...

So I'm building electricity into the back of the thing.

Using my awesome new-ish multi-tool for the first time, I was able to make clean rectangular cuts in the back of the unit in order for me to glue the plaster ring that caps a junction box when dry-walling right on the back of it. Once everything is painted and it's fixed, I can attach my junction boxes from behind.

Yes... I'm doing two. One on the bottom shelf where all of my electronics were recently being charged, and I decided to make another one on the top shelf of the cabinet down below the drawer too.

I figure since I'm already doing this work, why not join two boxes with conduit in the back so I'll have a place to charge all of the LED closet lights I bought that would be tucked away and out of sight instead of charging them on my living room floor using the USB ports on the power strip for the TV down there.

I've also decided to go super-legit with it and use the last GFCI outlet I had from the 4-pack to the bottom one where the plug will be for bonus protection of the electronics.

The only thing is, I'm going to have to remember to tell whoever ends up helping me move this thing one day that the conduit between the two boxes is NOT a handle.

I needed this. It's still going to take me HOURS to sand down the rest of that plastic wood and that was making me find excuses not to work on it. This is going to be one of the coolest pieces of furniture in my house when it's done now.

Hey Signy and Brenda - just saying hi! I'm still in and out of town, so my posting will be here and there.

Aside from being away from home more than in the past, nothing much is going on at my end ... tho being away from home does make it harder to keep up with tasks and projects ... so I have to work more diligently at keeping up.

Still no rain here, as Signy has commented on. Sigh. The deciduous trees definitely suffered in the last prolonged heatwave, they started to turn color early, but a rather muted purple-brown instead of their normal brilliant colors.

Hey Signy, if you want to plant a very landscape-useful, long-lived (up to 500 years), drought tolerant, native tree, try incense cedar (Calocedrus decurrens). It's impervious to many of the maladies - especially the imported pests and fungi - that trees are susceptible to here; as well as more ozone tolerant than other native conifers. Grows tall but not TOO tall - up to ~50', has a narrower profile so it doesn't cast a big pool of shade, and roots are not a problem.

Here's a young one that hasn't been 'limbed up'.

I don't think salt is poison.

But I know sucralose is poison, and you said you are going to drink it.

Sucralose is designed, engineered, created, and manufactured to be a poison, a pesticide, to kill living things. And you have announced that you are going to drink it. Are you trying to kill yourself? I have gotten many friends to clear up their health issues (and cancel surgeries) just by getting off sucralose.

I don't like salt. I don't like the taste. When I was a kid, we salted everything. Cantelope, corn on the cob (salt plus melted butter), scrambled eggs (plus pepper and ketchup) and lots of other stuff that I cannot recall now. But too many food places oversalt their food, so I really got tired of it. Biggest violators are gravy, dressing/stuffing, soups, mac&cheese, cooked/steamed beef.
I don't have salt in my house/kitchen much, and avoid it in my cooking. I use garlic salt for boiling pasta. I accidentally bought Lemon Pepper because I like lemon and (black) pepper flavoring - but it seems to be mostly just salt. I destroyed some really nice meat the first (and only) time I tried that in my cooking.

I'm interested in more info about the blood chemistry. Is it just a PH balance issue? Conductivity issue? Do some functions of the blood require salt, or get triggered or catalyzed by salt? Do some other parts of the blood build on the salt?
Is there a simple test for salt level? Like a litmus paper type thing?

I was originally just going to pre-install it now so the tight screw down would act as a clamp to hold the plates in place to the unit with the glue until it totally dries, but trying to install electric backwards like this is a major pain in the rear and I'm not going to take it down only to do it again after I paint everything. I'll just use some painter's tape to protect it during the caulk/paint phases.

Using a plug in lightbulb to test that both boxes worked and that the GFCI was working properly really made me kind of want to add light to this thing too, but that's work I really don't want to do now because I have more important things to be doing that messing around with this thing forever.

Plus, it's not exactly going to be showcasing anything special like it was probably originally designed to. It'll have some knicknacks for character on it, but it's really just a place to put the phone and electronics, my keys and other "pocket" things, some paperwork and the pile of mail before I go through it.

It will be cool to be able to charge all of those closet LED lights of sight with their own dedicated spot for it now. I'll also be able to use that spot below to charge my AA/AAA batteries for my flashlights too.

Salt is neither acidic nor basic, it's neutral. (In the simplest definition of acids and bases, acids have free H+ ions, bases have free OH- ions, and salt has neither.)

Salt is needed for nerves and muscles to function properly: they exclude sodium from their interiors but concentrate potassium in their interiors; to fire correctly they allow sodium in and potassium out. Without enough sodium your muscles may cramp up, and your heart may beat irregularly. Long-term, sodium less than about 1500mg (1.5g) per day is associated with heart failure.

But it's also needed for proper kidney function. Your body has certain tools to maintain proper sodium, potassium, chloride, CO2, calcium, magnesium, and other mineral levels. Some of these tools are called mineralocorticoids. And they're invoked to try to maintain adequate mineral levels. But they can only do so much, and trade-offs have to be made. For example, if your body is trying to hang onto sodium because it's too low; it will throw away potassium. If it's trying to get rid of water it will throw out sodium to do that. Without adequate levels of sodium, mineralocorticoids will be invoked that will sacrifice other minerals to maintain sodium levels.

I know I wasn't anywhere near that, so I'm aiming for 1/2 teaspoon (1200 mg) plus one Powerade Zero. Anything more is to the good

The funny thing is, hubby went thru the same thing about 30 years ago. They did all kinds of sophisticated tests on him and tried all all kinds of meds, but I was the one who dxd and fixed the problem.

I think JSF thinks salt is poison, but someone should tell him it's a vital electrolyte required to maintain blood volume.

I don't like salt. I don't like the taste. When I was a kid, we salted everything. Cantelope, corn on the cob (salt plus melted butter), scrambled eggs (plus pepper and ketchup) and lots of other stuff that I cannot recall now. But too many food places oversalt their food, so I really got tired of it. Biggest violators are gravy, dressing/stuffing, soups, mac&cheese, cooked/steamed beef.
I don't have salt in my house/kitchen much, and avoid it in my cooking. I use garlic salt for boiling pasta. I accidentally bought Lemon Pepper because I like lemon and (black) pepper flavoring - but it seems to be mostly just salt. I destroyed some really nice meat the first (and only) time I tried that in my cooking.

I'm interested in more info about the blood chemistry. Is it just a PH balance issue? Conductivity issue? Do some functions of the blood require salt, or get triggered or catalyzed by salt? Do some other parts of the blood build on the salt?
Is there a simple test for salt level? Like a litmus paper type thing?

I'm not drinking Powerade Zero anymore. Instead I'm literally dosing myself with salt: three 1/4 teaspoons per day in my mouth, followed by a half liter or so of water, 2 liters per day total.

My explanation for myself about salt is more mechanistic than KIKI's, altho hers is more correct.

Your blood needs a certain amount of sodium in it. (All of the minerals - sodium, potassium, calcium, etc are tightly regulated by your kidneys.)

But you lose sodium every day, in urine, feces, and sweat. If you lose too much sodium, you will dump water just to re-concentrate the sodium, but when you dump water your blood volume drops. When your blood volume drops, your body goes thru all kinds of gyrations trying to maintain blood flow: heart speeds up (100 BPM or more) , initially blood blood pressure drops, you feel faint when standing up etc: all the classic signs of dehydration.

If it goes on long enough, your heart starts to stutter, blood vessels clamp down, blood pressure shoots UP (like, 160/90 or more) and your heart really starts to labor, you feel exhausted ... I can tell you from experience it's not a fun time!

I don't like the taste of salt either. I rarely cook with salt, I've been eating mostly non-salty things, and I don't salt my food. It just kind of slipped out of my diet which is how I wound up where I did.

As I mentioned, the funny thing is, hubby went thru exactly the same thing 3 decades ago. His blood pressure was jacking up, and down, his heart was stuttering, his legs were weak and he would tire very easily .. we used to play tennis with a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff. Yeah. Everything is a huge mess now. That thing kind of played a pretty important role in my day-to-day activities, and with it pulled out from the wall in the living room with the doors off and the drawer out and everything it used to hold had to have a new temporary home, my first floor is kind of in shambles. Even worse since all of my tools were moved down to the basement and the pantry is now largely filled up with stuff that was once in the cabinet, so any tools I've been using are all over the kitchen floor instead of constantly taking them back up and down when I need them.

(Yanno... I can probably at least clean a lot of that up now. I think I'm pretty much done except for paint now unless I notice any spots I still want to fix after the primer goes on).

Stuff's out of the way so I'm not tripping over anything, but it will be nice to get that done finally.

Today I at least finally got all the wood putty sanded down, and then I caulked everything. I doubt I'll get to primer today though.

My goal is to get this finished before my brother comes in town for a week. Since I've also got other obligations in between now and then, I'd better make the most of whatever down time I've got.

If I can at least get everything painted so I can put stuff back in it I'll be fine. It's alright if I clean up the old hinges and door clasps for spraypainting while he's here. We've got a few days in the 50's still coming up, so it will be nice to be able to do that in the garage.

That's got to be done while he's here no matter what though. I got that can for that purpose, and also to do some touchups to the poles for the lazy susan cabinets I never did since I ran out back then. What's leftover I'm going to be using on a new keyboard/mouse platform for my brother's desk since his old one broke. He bought some nice wrist wrests we're going to attach to it. It's perfect timing there because instead of doing that while he wasn't around I want him here to let me know where he feels everything is the most comfortable, and the next time I go down to visit him I'll install it for him and see if we need to buy any new hardware for it.

The nice thing is that except for that can of spraypaint, I haven't spent any money working on this, and the paint is going to serve two other purposes

My Christmas cards are done but then I don't mail many anyways. Just a couple to England, one to Alberta and anything else I hand deliver.

Got the last present, now I just have to get the envelope addressed and it can be posted tomorrow. Yay! me.

Well, for whatever reason, October, November, and December are always a crunch for me ... maybe because I'm dealing with medicare and all the other various insurances, and a train of birthdays and holidays ('Eating season' begins in October with a birthday early in the month, and doesn't end till Easter!), plus I'm completing my record-keeping and 'accounting' for the year.

And this year has been somewhat busier than usual with some additional things to do.

So ... sigh ... once again my Christmas cards will be late. At least I get them done at some point.

I was thinking that eating salt, having salt in the GI tract, would cause, via basic osmosis, the water to be drawn out of the body, into the GI. That would be dehydration, I conjured.

It depends on the concentration. With enough water, the salt concentration in your GI tract becomes the same as the salt concentration in your body. When they rehydrate you, they use 0.9pct saline in water.

That's why I always follow salt with water. The only reason why I take it by the 1/4 teasp is bc I hate the taste, so I can get it over with and wash it out of my mouth by drinking water. Otherwise I would just mix it in water to the right concentration, but then I'd have to drink it gulp by hideous gulp. Bleh

I have to do this while I have the energy. Still need to make some phone calls about hubby's RMD. We keep getting notifications that he needs to RMD one of his contracts and make it automatic, but that was already done, so either his retirement admin didn't notify his former employer or his former employer is slow to update their files.
AFA insurance, since we've selected our medigap coverage lo these many years ago, I haven't made any changes, altho I DID look at alternate Rx plans I stuck with the ones we have as being higher rated and still cost effective.

In fact, all of the interior work I plan on doing to keep be busy until spring shouldn't cost me any more money since everything I plan to do was already purchased before. I've got 10 gallons of various paint for various tasks in the colors I plan to use sitting in my coat closet on stand by.

Next step probably is the coat closet, since that is just an easy paint job and adding one bracket in the center of the shelf. After that I'll work on the pantry so I don't have to use all of my kitchen cabinets for things that don't belong there like all my spare lightbulbs, 3 years worth of toilet paper and paper towels and large bulk purchases like my coffee and cereal supply.

The pantry might end up being a project though. I haven't decided if I want to just keep it simple shelving like it is now or put a little more effort and creativity into it.

On this end, medically we're all having problems, including the dog.

Shit happens when you get old, so that explains hubby and me, and daughter has had Neuro problems since birth accident. (We filed a complaint against healthcare provider but didn't get very far.)

AFA the dog is concerned she had bad teeth and needed extractions so is on antibiotics, pain med, anti-inflammatory and soft food for the while. Since I don't want her to go thru THAT again I'm looking up doggy toothbrushes and toothpastes!

He didn't come in last Christmas, so the last time he was in was in May of last year. My Grandma's memory isn't what it used to be, and she can't believe she hasn't seen him in nearly 2 years now. I'm going to make sure we get to visit with her and my aunt at least twice while he's in.

I know I haven't been posting in here much, so I can't remember if I ever put any status updates on the house flippers that bought the foreclosure behind me recently. They were getting work done, but then the city tied them up on permits for about a month and a half.

Well a few weeks back they poured a beautiful new concrete driveway, so no more weed garden there anymore.

And just Tuesday they put the posts in for the new privacy fence and I think today they'll finish it. It's BEAUTIFUL. And they installed it right and I got the "good" side. (I'm so glad I have before/after pictures of this).

Maybe next summer I'll consider getting permits in order and building what little I'd need to fence in my yard on both sides of the garage with a few gates. I've never built a fence before, but I know a person or two who have. We'll see what wood prices are like. I'm only doing it if they're cheap. I've gone 10 years without it already.

It really would be nice to have that done though. The biggest reason I haven't ever gotten a dog is because I've never had a fenced in yard that it could play in. It's a gigantic back yard, so when it does get fenced in properly it will have plenty of space to play.

Curio cabinet is fully primed and ready for paint. No more repairs needed.

I hope to have the paint finished on Sunday at the latest. The doors and drawer may or may not make that challenging, but that's okay if I'm still doing some of that later. I'll give it a few days before putting down the contact paper and putting the hardware on the drawers, and one of these warm days I'll clean up the old hinges and door catches in the garage and spray paint them.

One step closer to getting the 1st floor complete.

Yup. Curb appeal is up big time on the block.

I ended up painting the first coat of finish paint on the cabinet, doors and drawer.

Almost 4 hours with breaks included, but time well spent. I should be ahead of the game now as long as I stay on track tomorrow.

I believe it, Brenda. You're probably getting what we got around 10PM through early this morning.

Yesterday, during the day, was a high in the mid 40's, and today is colder. But it got to over 60 degrees around midnight because of winds from the south.

While I was painting last night I heard the thunder settle in and then I heard the city's raid sirens going off, just a little after 10PM. I looked online and there was a tornado warning until 10:30. Strong winds all night.

I suppose I'm going to have to go out and survey the damage.

Oh, sorry. I didn't see that post before.

It probably wouldn't be worth refinishing. The wood wasn't necessarily bad, but there were a lot of issues with it before I did any repairs back in the day. It was also painted with some ancient paint before I painted it out in the garage maybe 6 or 7 years ago.

I also added quite a few more recently when I drilled holes in the sides of the shelf in the lower cabinet with a countersink bit so I could throw screws into the shelf from the outside of the unit to make it rock solid before I caulked it and painted it. The shelf wasn't going to go anywhere, but it was also a bit wobbly. I'd started that with brad nails, but decided that without being able to glue anything they likely wouldn't have held for too many years. All of that damage was filled with wood putty and sanded down before paint. You can't even tell anymore.

I also used a boatload of wood putty last week to fill in all of the tracks that would have been used to guide glass doors that were never part of it since I've had it. Now that they've all been sanded down and painted you wouldn't even know this thing had glass doors at one point.

I'm painting it white, with the high-gloss finish that I used on the kitchen cabinets and that I've used on all of the doors and trim that I've done already. It looks great and it's REALLY easy to clean. 5 months after I've finished the kitchen now and they look just as good as they did when I finished them.

The final coat is going on the cabinet and drawer this morning. I'll need a bit more time to do both sides of the doors, but I can start cleaning up those hinges and the door catches for spray paint during down time.

It just occurred to me this morning I still have half a tub of that stripping agent I used to do the cabinets left, so I'll do that first and clean them up as best I can before I take the copper wire wheel to it.

I tried, in vain, to see if I could find pictures of what that originally looked like. I know I had taken them, because I remember sending the before/after pictures to two people many years back via e-mail. Was too busy to see what would have been in your forecast for last night, but ZH had an article about the strong possibility of tornadoes across a huge swath of the eastern USA and midwest including parts of Indiana

I hope the new fence is standing! I expect that branches will be down, since silver maples are weak-wooded. But unless you heard shingles being torn off the roof, I think your roof will be OK. I thought maybe you were going to get drenching and that your drainage system and sump would get a workout, but it seems not.

Given that your neighborhood values are going up, can you get your city to pay more attention to that drainage ditch? It really need to be lined with ... something. If not concrete, which would be ideal, at least rip-rap. Maybe a petition by the neighbors who are at a lower level than the ditch itself

Meanwile, that "atmospheric river" that was predicted to bring 2" of much-needed rain to SoCal has been scaled back (in my neighborhood, anyway) to about 1.3". It will be welcome, for sure, but it's mid Dec already, and the last significant rain (not counting a couple immeasurable dizzles/settling fog) was Oct 25. I hope the rest of CA gets everything predicted, and more! The Sierras and Central Valley are bone dry, and we will see more tree die-offs and more massive fires unless the Federal govt and CA start doing what they should have been doing for decades: Hand-thinning and controlled-burning 2-mile-wide firebreaks across forested land, and making "black earth" in situ. That would give firecrews and a revived CCC something to do. That would be ideal. But, of course, it will never happen.

Also, instead of building giant dams (like the Oroway dam that almost got washed away) suitable areas really need to build at aquifer recharge areas. Or maybe, like "Governor Moonbeam" (Jerry Brown, who actually was a decent governor) re-introduce beavers back to the mountains so they can start making their ponds and doing their own distributed aquifer recharge basins.

Yeah as I was watching a bit of tv a wind came up last night because the glass in my balcony was rattling again. It didn't last long though but the rain was horrible.

SIG, BC is already started rebuilding infrastructure that was destroyed last month and trying to figure out how with the rebuild to make our flood control better. What we have now though is hard on salmon stocks as the dykes and gates are on spawning rivers. That is all being taken into account now.

We are getting a bit of a break right now as it is dry this morning for my walk. But calls for more rain are coming.

SIX: Oh, sorry. I didn't see that post before.

It probably wouldn't be worth refinishing. The wood wasn't necessarily bad, but there were a lot of issues with it before I did any repairs back in the day. It was also painted with some ancient paint before I painted it out in the garage maybe 6 or 7 years ago.

I also added quite a few more recently when I drilled holes in the sides of the shelf in the lower cabinet with a countersink bit so I could throw screws into the shelf from the outside of the unit to make it rock solid before I caulked it and painted it. The shelf wasn't going to go anywhere, but it was also a bit wobbly. I'd started that with brad nails, but decided that without being able to glue anything they likely wouldn't have held for too many years. All of that damage was filled with wood putty and sanded down before paint. You can't even tell anymore.

I also used a boatload of wood putty last week to fill in all of the tracks that would have been used to guide glass doors that were never part of it since I've had it. Now that they've all been sanded down and painted you wouldn't even know this thing had glass doors at one point.

I'm painting it white, with the high-gloss finish that I used on the kitchen cabinets and that I've used on all of the doors and trim that I've done already. It looks great and it's REALLY easy to clean. 5 months after I've finished the kitchen now and they look just as good as they did when I finished them.

The final coat is going on the cabinet and drawer this morning. I'll need a bit more time to do both sides of the doors, but I can start cleaning up those hinges and the door catches for spray paint during down time.

It just occurred to me this morning I still have half a tub of that stripping agent I used to do the cabinets left, so I'll do that first and clean them up as best I can before I take the copper wire wheel to it.

I tried, in vain, to see if I could find pictures of what that originally looked like. I know I had taken them, because I remember sending the before/after pictures to two people many years back via e-mail. Yeah. It's almost done now.

Finish coat of paint was put on everything. I also cleaned up all the hinges and got two coats on one side of them. I'll probably let them dry overnight before I flip them over and do the other side, since I'm not going to put the contact paper on until tomorrow anyhow. I didn't bother using the stripping gunk. I tried out the wire wheel first and it worked great. It took about 30 minutes to clean everything up. Eventually I'll get a mountable unit that will make stuff like this a lot easier instead of trying to hold a drill with one hand, keep it turned on, and then use the other hand to put the metal up to it.

I put plenty of cardboard around in the basement and just sprayed it all down there instead of going out to the garage. It was freakin' cold today.

I also got the new oil rubbed bronze knobs on the drawer and the door already.

It should be completely finished tomorrow, and I'll finally be able to clean everything up.

I forgot the country isn't on my time frame on Sunday. Or maybe I forgot it was Sunday?

Got up nice and early to take my time before running errands. Got up to Goodwill for their 50% off sale today only to realize they don't open for another two hours. That's when it dawned on me that Menards doesn't open for another hour and I'm pretty sure that even Aldi opens later.

Oopsie.

I'm hoping to find a reasonably sized flatscreen TV for my grandma since the speakers on hers are gone and nobody I know has been upgrading any of their TVs for a while. My dad put old computer speakers on it, but her short term memory is pretty shot and every time I call her she takes a minute to figure out that she's got to turn off the TV or get up and manually turn down the speakers since the remote won't control them. Truth be told, getting that TV for her may be more for me than it is for her, not to start every conversation off with the reminder that whatever we talk about she's not going to remember after we hang up the phone.

Probably won't find one there either though.

A few things are a great deal or even free with rebate at Menards, and I have to go up there to buy one more roll of contact paper anyhow. I'm short just about 3 feet for covering the shelves and the drawer on the curio cabinet with the 4 rolls I bought way before I started working on the kitchen. Bummer... But at least I'll have plenty for the two vanities whenever I get around to remodeling the bathroom upstairs and installing one in the basement.

Hardware is all spray painted on both sides now that I did it before I went out. So everything is painted. I just need to get the paper on and everything installed once the hardware dries.

Got my shopping done but it took a LOT longer than I thought it ever would...

Guys at Goodwill don't know crap. I showed up when they told me it would open but they were still an hour off. Had to go out of my way and circle back when I was done, and lines on Sunday everywhere reminded me why I never go shopping on Sunday...

And it's official, at least by me. It's now the Dollar*Tree, with a 25% increase on everything due to Bidenflation.

Plus, I had to pay a whopping $7.77 for the same roll of contact paper I had bought for $5.64 per roll before I worked on my kitchen (late 2020). To add to that sting, there's no 11% rebates going on until next year either.

That's the bad news out of the way...

Got some great rebate deals otherwise. Nothing free, but close too it and I'll be swimming in various types of GOOD sandpaper for my various power tools for years to come. Steep upfront price, but the rebates should only take about a month to come in. I also got a nice large tool box at a great sale price that will make organizing my tools in the basement a lot easier now.

Goodwill was a bust on the TV and radio, but otherwise it was probably my best haul yet. 2 large coffee mugs, 2 pairs of essentially brand new Levis jeans and 2 hoodies for only $19.

I broke one of my only two large coffee mugs earlier this year, and I wanted to make sure I had one for my Bro when he comes in next week.

Looks like we're finally getting some rain. Raining in SFO and moving its way down here.

"They" finally got to paying attention to those "atmospheric rivers" that hit CA. Seems that half of the rain that CA gets in an average year comes from them. But since they're so hit-and-miss, they're hard to predict.

Oh, she's in an entirely different weather system than you, most of the time. Your warm weather usually comes up from the Gulf of Mexico, from SW to NE. She's waaaay too far north, in the wrong direction, and with whole mountain range between her and Gulf. The only weather you share is when a blast of Arctic air swoops down and nails both of you. But I hope you got to enjoy the warm weather!
