Primed both sides of the top three shelves. Had just enough primer in the gallon to do it without having to open a new one. Sweet. One more gallon used up and out in the trash.
I'll let it dry overnight before putting any wood putty on there. Hopefully I'll have contact paper on them and get them up in the pantry this weekend. I want to give it 2 or so days for the paint to cure before putting the paper on. Might be able to finish them tomorrow otherwise.

I made the awesomest fancy dinner a few nights ago, also the last PITA dinner for a while.
Since hubby "hates chicken" I'm always looking for ways to disguise it, since it's better for us than beef or porl, so I always keep it in the menu rotation. So I tried an experiment, using a recipe for "twice cooked pork" (think tempura pork) with sweet and sour sauce from my Asian cookbook with chicken breast instead to see if it would work, and it did!
The sweet and sour sauce is not like the sauce you normally think of, since it has red and green peppers, onion, water chestnuts, ketchup, and peas, so it's a vegetable-rich topping. But since daughter "hates tomato" and "hates red pepper" I followed the sweet and sour cause recipe, but instead of using ketchup and diced red pepper I blenderized yomato sauce and red pepper so that it wasn't visible as chunks.
Hubby was suspicious of the meat. "what is this?" I made him guess, and he guessed pork. Good disguise! He was surprised it was chicken.
Daughter -of course- avoided the onion and green pepper, but she thought the red stuff made a tasty dipping sauce, and was vastly surprised to learn that it had TWO ingredients that she thought she hated - tomato and red pepper- expanding, at least for that dish- her palette of available healthy colored vegetables.
I rarely deep fry anything, this is an exception. And to make the dinner even more vegetable-rich, I made a version of chow mein that included julienned carrot, leftover bean sprouts, leftover snow peas, leftover pre-prepared calorie-free shitataki noodles, ginger, tamari, garlic, bamboo shoots and sesame oil.
So while meal was a PITA I did manage to disguise some "hated" ingredients into a tasty dish and make a healthful, low-carb meal.
But for the next few days its going to be plain home-cooking, like pulled pork and cole slaw and lots of salads, since the weather's been so hot (80-90F)
When the weather cools down on Monday or Tuesday it's back to soups like ham-veggie and beef-veggie and chicken dumpling, my three standards.
I'm always thinking of my family's health when I'm menu-planning and try to include a lean source of protein, a green(ish) vegetable (zucchini, spinach, celery okra, parsley, green beans etc) a non-green vegetable or fruit (carrots, sweet potato, beets, watermelon, cantaloupe, red pepper, tomato etc) and a low-calorie tummy-filler (cabbage, shiratkai noodles, cauliflower etc)

Got good news on my cardiac function, which is checked every 3 months bc one of the monoclonal antibodies can give ppl heart failure, and my ejection fraction is still right up there at 70pct.

I set up the humidifiers in the bedrooms last night since this hot unseasonable weather is thanks to a strong, dry Santa Ana. I'm glad I did, it makes for much more comfortable sleeping for everyone.

Glad you got some good health news. Reading your post is making me hungry. I'm not a terrible cook, but I have an extremely limited menu with the bulk buys and I really miss eating like a king when I lived at my Grandma's in my mid-20s. You've got a lucky family for sure.
Got the wood putty on the 3 top shelves. I'm not going crazy and removing every single imperfection on them. It was plywood, afterall, and I knew that without having a $10,000 drum sander I wasn't going to have a perfect surface. And really, if I wanted it to be perfect I should just buy prefabbed IKEA crap.
There was some damage from the saw blade on the edges though, and I definately wanted to fill in the knots.
The primer didn't fill in much on the edges. Rather than fill in all the edges, I just dry-fit the pieces again after primer and decided which edge would be the front and filled just that edge in since once installed nobody would ever see the other three.
I didn't want to set these things up in the basement since it's so cold down there, but that means that I can't put a fan on them to hasten the drying time since they're staged on paint cans on top of cardboard in my livingroom and I'm sure as hell not putting on a fan while it's this cold in my house.
I should be able to sand it by the end of the day regardless. If I'm feeling up to it, I might at least get one coat of paint on it before midnight, but that might have to wait until tomorrow.
I'm going to finish some paperwork I mostly completed yesterday, do a little cleaning up and get my rebate completed so I can get that sent out. They owe me over $200 now, so I'm not going to wait on that.
I think I'll pull the contact paper off the old pantry shelves after all. I've decided that eventually I want to throw out all of those dressers I have in my garage for storage and replace them with shelving units. I've gotten pretty good at making them with scrap wood and pallets and I could make one or two more smaller units with that wood rather than throwing it out. Since they'll be garage shelves, I won't have to worry about sanding down lead paint and I can just throw a coat or two of whatever paint I've got lying around that I want to get rid of when I build them in the spring/summer.

I have a ???, tho: What is that gray color on the walls? It's perfect - not too dark, but dark enough to show up nicely against white trim, and not at all harsh and cold-looking. It's so classy! And you're right: it goes perfectly with the flooring. Nice pick!

Aside from cooking, I've been keeping up with housecleaning and the odd random small project. Since it's been so hot the only thing I've been doing outdoors lately is watering, but my windowsill herbs sprouted. Also, have a largish indoor plant, taller than me, but the pot was in a 1.5 X 2.5 flatish tray (originally from a large birdcage). Turns out that the pot had legs that kept the soil from soaking up the water, and since its in an unheated room the water wasn't evaporating and got a good head of white mold on it. Didn't want that throwing off spores all the time, so I found a tub originally used to drain motor oil, cleaned that up, scooped out enough of the water from the tray so I could handle the tray without spilling, xfered the plant pot into the tub (a much better fit, and taller, allowing water to contact the soil so I can "water from below"), and cleaned out the tray. I will use that to hold my garden seedlings, since THIS year I want to plant cucumbers that can withstand hot summers, and grow more tomatoes specifically for sauce bc I want to can some for the winter.
For the residual white mold, I read that cinnamon does a good job killing it, so I sprinkled some into the tub and it seems to have done the trick.
My next project is burnishing the bedframe and putting a light layer of mahongany stain on the plywood aprons to match the birch ply to the beech frame (which has a more rosy tone) so hubby can FINALLY finish it. I've already tried the staining on scrap lumber so I know it will work well.
But, many more doctor's appointments this week, so first watering (so the plants don't croak), kitchen cleanup and the every three-week housecleaning.

I'll get the colors for you that I've used. Which grey were you talking about though? In the Pantry? I've gone with several different colors now. The pantry and closet were both painted with one of the colors I had bought back in November 2019 but decided against using in the Kitchen and Living Room. I believe it was meant for the kitchen, since it was an eggshell, and the matte color was for the living room. I'm pretty sure that there is just a hint of green in it that probably isn't evident from the photos.
The accent color for both the kitchen and living room, which is by far the darkest of all the colors is called Antique Pewter. That's the only one I know off hand. The other 3 walls in the living room are a 2nd color, the other 3 walls in the kitchen are a 3rd color and now the closet and pantry make for a 4th color. Aside from the Antique Pewter, they're all fairly similar with just some subtle differences in shade for a different feel from room to room.
But again, I'll say that I wouldn't recommend this line of paint unless you're patient and don't mind painting a room 3 times. The price was right, and I believe it will actually hold up to washing really well, but it's a lot of extra work. I can get you the names of the colors, but I'd recommend if you want to use them that you find the closest matching color in a higher quality of paint.

I think mine was worse though.
I got the contact paper off of the other 9 shelves I decided to keep from the pantry. There's no way I'm ever going to use them for anything until after I get a chance to power wash them in the lawn in the spring though.

My supper is left over beef stew with some added pasta for tonight and don't know what tomorrow.

Had to take a kind of emergency break from the shelf work.
I didn't realize it while sanding, but the deepest of the knotted pits in the plywood on the 2nd board I was sanding wasn't completely dry and I was messing with the integrity of the fill. I didn't figure that out until I hit the dust with a shop vac and saw some "spider-webbing" going on.
So I had to dust it off good, stop what I was doing and hit the entire bottom of that shelf with a coat of primer in an attempt to seal it in and hope that there was not enough damage to it to make it bust away.
I'll be able to prime the first shelf that I'd already fully prepared, and by that time I can move the compromised shelf from the horses and sand and prep the 3rd one. Hopefully by the time I've primed one side of that one the compromised shelf will have dried enough that I can flip it and sand the other side. Otherwise we're wasting some primer on cleanup and we're going to have to call it a day.
It is the bottom of the shelf and won't ever have any weight put on it. Hopefully when it's all dry it will be fine.

Turned out fine.
Haven't even put paint on these yet. Just two coats of primer and the wood putty.
Nobody will even know they were made out of low-grade plywood when they're done.

Hey all!
I've been busy here, but mostly recently just running after a slew of issues that came up one after another. I was so hoping to make progress on my various projects. But ... not yet.
However, one of the things I made progress on is I've been looking at gas-powered chipper/ shredders for all the tree and bush trimming and removal I'm going to do soon. So I was looking at the heavy-duty types and O. M. G. They are EXPENSIVE. The cheapest runs about $550. And despite that I'd even consider buying one because it costs about $400 per day to rent one. But literally none of the ones I looked at had a rating higher than middling. And the faults were serious ones, like cracked body welds, bolt heads that sheared off during use, chunks of hammer-mill blades that got spat out of the machine at high speed like bullets, exhaust that ran so hot it set the wood on fire ... and so on. Really awful unsafe problems. Sigh. How hard could it be to design and build and sell something that works even averagely, without all the hazards?
So I talked it over with a family member, who said basically - the biggest volume reduction comes from doing the smaller twigs and branches that carry a lot of leaves and needles. The large branches (more than an inch or 2 in diameter) you can quickly and easily just cut up into pieces and use as firewood, or put in green waste.
So ... Forget those expensive pieces of junk! that really had me bollixed.
I'm going with electric chipper/ shredders than come in well under $200 and will do the most volume reduction.
It feels good to have come to what I think is a good decision, and out that step behind me.

Yeah. I'd never used one of those myself, but as you started telling your story and throughout I was thinking of how many paper shredders I've gone through, each time telling myself that I wasn't going to force too many pieces in at one time, only to have another one eventually smoke on me and die.
They're probably not nearly as bad as the bad reviews would have you believe, but if they're not going to do what you thought they would, no sense in buying one. Especially for the limited use you're going to get out of it.
I get your logic there though. Next time I need my drain to the sewer rodded out I'm just buying a pro machine for the job and doing it myself.

Where I'm at, they pretty much take all of that as long as you cut it down to a reasonable size. They say 4', but I've seen them take it MUCH longer than that.
One day I had pieces of two medium limbs along the side of my driveway but close to the curb. Not where I'd put them if I intended for them to be picked up. I just hadn't gotten around to cutting them up yet. When I came back one day they were just gone.
Next time I saw them come around I asked about that and he said that they can do a lot longer than 4', but they just say that to make the jobs more efficient and so that everybody isn't just putting out 12' limbs on their curbs all the time. He told me if they were having a busy day they wouldn't have picked them up, so it must have been a good day for them.

Going to paint the shelves today. I ended up using the fan last night on the primer before flipping them over and doing the other side even though they were in the living room. That worked great and didn't make it too uncomfortable. I've got plenty to do cleanup-wise in between.
Last night I also made two damp paper towels and draped them over my dollar store paint brush handle bucket thing in between the three coats I needed to do since I had to do that one-side emergency paint job because of the wood putty incident and it kept the brush and paint inside from crusting up.
Play my cards right I should be able to get both sides painted twice without having to clean the brush twice and waste paint.
These are looking so good I think I might go back to my coat closet and get rid of that veneered MDF I bought and installed in there when my bro was around almost 2 years ago. The shelf bracket that I recently installed to keep it from bowing would probably be a redundancy if I do that, but that MDF gets beat up pretty easy and is going to look out of place when I finally get the finishing touches on the kitchen and living rooms complete.
I've still got plenty of extra plywood in the garage to do that and the bottom two slide out shelves I want to make in the pantry, and I think I'll even have enough to do a shelf in the basement bedroom closet whenever I get around to working down there.

At the home stretch on the shelves now. Just have to give the final coats to the tops of them. I'm waiting longer than I probably need to before I do it though because I didn't give the last coat enough time before the flip and there is some minor scuffing happening from where the shelves rested on my paint cans that are covered with paper towels for protection.
I may or may not wait another day and get the contact paper on them either tomorrow or Sunday

A friend from high school, her dad taught me how to convert for weather but that is about all I can do.
I hear ya. I almost wished I hadn't put my coat on this morning when I went out.

If you do sell, I hope the new owners won't take them out. My dad but in cupboard in one house we were living in before he sold it. I was driven back around the house when I was an adult and a later owner did rip out my dad's hard work. Saw the wood laying on the ground at the side of the house. Not nice but I guess who ever those owners were must have remodeled and they didn't fit.

Yeah... that's a bummer. A lot of people want to buy a house and then make it their own. That's exactly what I'm doing, but it was a dump when I bought it and that was the plan all along.
Whenever I am ready to sell, I'm going to be asking top dollar for the place that the local market will allow though. The whole thing is going to be move-in ready for a family with no remodeling necessary, and a lot of this work like the kitchen cabinets are real custom stuff that you're just not going to find in other houses. I would like to think that the right buyer is going to love it the way that it is, but it's not really my business what they do with it after the contracts are signed. At least I'll always have the pictures.
I actually put the feet on the bottoms of the shelves and put them up to air dry in the pantry instead of drying on top of the paint cans. Even snapped a pic. Glad I did because with the dark of night outside it really looks cool with the motion sensor LED light hitting it and the shadows it makes.
I'll put the pics up here tomorrow.

Oh SIX, about the paint color- I was looking at the pantry. But if the paint quality is as bad as you say, don't bother looking up the mgr and color, I'll just do a color match next time I buy. I LIKE painting, but not so much that I want to put on three coats instead of two!

By far, most people just want to move in. A couple with careers and children - the kind of people who would be looking for a house and who can afford one -are usually too busy to think about renovations. So I think you're heading in the right direction.

KIKI I follow your logic. IMHO it takes an inordinate amount of time to hand-reduce appx 8X8X8 cuft of twigs and small branches so that it will fit into a bin.
Once you've made and tried out your purchase, do you mind doing a review? I have more items to remove eventually, mostly plantings that didn't grow true to form or are diseased in some way, so I might want to get one of my own.

Well I already looked at the bucket for you. The color is "Sea Frost", and it's in the Pittsburgh Ultra line of paint at Menards. At least with that, you can grab the right color swatch and match it to a higher quality paint.
Like I said, I think the paint will hold up beautifully once you get it up, but 3 coats is just way too much work. The only reason that I don't mind so much is because of how much of this stuff I got for dirt cheap with a huge rebate a while ago. It's also great practice for me. I think I'd like to maybe start painting on the side some day. It's a low stress job that I enjoy doing.
I was thinking that maybe the batch I'd bought during that rebate was just bad, but sadly no. The bucket of Sea Frost was from November 2019, nearly two years earlier and it still required 3 coats over a primered wall.
That being said, I am still a HUGE fan of the white HIGH-GLOSS enamel in the Pittsburgh Ultra line. It's around $28 compared to only about $16 for the flat paint in the line when they're both not on sale.

In case you missed it, I didn't do the bottom two yet because I want to buy the correct soft-close drawer slides for the bottom two shelves so you can pull them out to the front of the pantry to rotate stock of things like canned goods. It's why the 3rd shelf from the top is shorter. The top shelves are just shy of 25" deep, and the 3rd shelf is 17".

It's a lot brighter there during the day, but I'll probably have to consider another light or two in there for night time use. Seeing those lower shelves isn't going to be great. Putting electric down in both of the closets wouldn't be easy, even if I wanted to cheat with greenfield or romex because the attic is finished.
The only lights in the vicinity of the pantry that would help illuminate it at night is the chandelier I hung going upstairs, and residual lights from the ceiling in the basement, both of which don't throw all that might light into the pantry, especially when your body is in the way.
Those LED lights are nice though. They do last for quite a while and are easy to recharge.
But you do have to get lucky though. The 3 pack of small ones like the one in there have worked great now for going on two years. The two pack of larger ones came with one that started acting jenky only a month or two after I got it and then completely stopped taking a charge after only about 1.5 years. I can still use it if it's plugged in all the time though, so I installed it in the lower cab of the curio cabinet.

Thank you. It was nice. My aunt and grandma came by and we celebrated her 89th birthday with some Mexican food and a cake.
They usually go to my aunt and uncle's place to celebrate, but my cousin who got Leukemia after getting vaccinated has another round of chemo today and they finally found a match for his bone marrow from some awesome person in Europe. They have completely self-quarantined since my newphew's diagnosis, so I'm hoping that this all goes well and they can return to normal soon. I can't imagine how hard this has been for them. His fiancee is an amazing woman, sticking through this with him. Best case scenario he probably will never have a full life, and she's already 30 years old too.
I was also able to try my hand at online tax filing for the first time, and I helped show my aunt how to do it. Until it became clear that it was going to take far too long doing it that way with my grandma getting hungry for lunch on her birthday, I had my aunt do the steps herself for about 75% of it.
She wasn't doing anything wrong herself, and is actually quite an impressive student at learning how tech works since I got her started down that path. But those online free-file outfits are a nightmare to navigate. I've done my own taxes by hand and mailed them for over 20 years now myself and I could have done her taxes in 1/4 the time. Every third page was trying to get her to spend money on an upgrade or paying to talk to a professional, and a lot of the questions they were asking were superfluous and designed just to confuse and intimidate people into paying for something they don't need to pay for.
We got it done though.
I should have really double checked what they came up with before instead of taking my aunt on her idea that's what she thought she'd be getting. They probably got it right, but I'm going to go over everything and see if I now have to file a 1040X to get money back because they screwed it up.
It's insanity that the IRS doesn't have a simple to use portal to just fill out the forms and submit them electronically and you have to navigate through 80 pages of bullshit through for-profit companies who hassle you ever step of the way to "free" file.
OK... I'm done ranting. It was a great visit otherwise. They got to see all my cool new stuff I've been working on.
My grandma, as far as I know, is now the oldest living family member on either side of my family. If it wasn't for her short term memory fading, she's doing well for her age. Hopefully the long term never goes. No signs of that happening. If anything, I think she talks to me more about things that happened when she was a kid more than she ever did before. It seems like anything that happened more than 5 or so years ago she doesn't have any problems recalling.

I think I'm probably taking a break today and just enjoying my clean house.
I'm going to wait on tomorrows sale paper to see if there is anything else I'm going to be getting rebates on before sending out the already massive pile I've accumulated over the last few weeks.
I think my next step is to finally extend the two window sills in my living room by adding blocks of wood with countersunk holes screwed into the existing frame and wood putty, so then I can finally start putting up the rest of the window trim and frame out the stairwell and get the living room finished finally.
I've got a guy I want to talk about drawer slides with before I finish the pantry, and I know he's been really busy right now so I don't want to bother him with that yet. That can wait anyhow. I really don't even need those bottom two shelves at the moment and I've been able to get everything clean and organized without them.

That's a great idea. I should do that.
I've been meaning to spend more time at her place. I should make a point of it when the weather gets warmer. She's got about 5 totes full of picutres of people I don't even know from her lifetime. Things that I took great care to save when I was throwing out the hoard that had accumulated in that basement over decades with my uncle and after he passed away. I think she'd get a kick out of going through them, and I could write down things on the back of the pictures.

I'm glad that you both had/ have the opportunity to talk to your older relatives. When I left home and got married my parents were having their personal problems and they weren't even talking to me. And shortly after we moved to LA which really put a crimp in communications! My grandma, I think, didn't expect to hear much from me. After all, SHE left her home and traveled to a whole new nation, and probably lost touch with the family SHE left behind. It was just how life went. But I regret the lost opportunity to talk with her and my folks about how things were, why they did what they did, what they thought, how they felt...
Take advantage of the time you have left with them bc once it's gone, you never get it back.

The last time my mum had a visit from one of her aunt's, I took the opportunity to write down a bunch of information from her side of the family. I still have it too.
I have a slew of old photographs and I am talking a couple that go back to the late 1800s. They were taken in Scotland and both have written on them who the people are in them but no dates, so the close as I can come is around 1899.
I'm sure she would and yes, writing down who's in the photograph and a year if she can do that would be good too.
Well, my parents were older and my aunts and uncles weren't as close as yours are around you. I knew my family was walking this continent for a long time before I got as much detail as I have.
Don't know about the easier. I've heard complaints about the government site being a pain. And these people volunteer to help others do their paper work so they know the site.

That's cool. The only real thing I have like that is a couple of small notebooks that my Uncle tucked away in a tacklebox for me in a place he knew I'd find it before he decided that he'd had enough of this world. It had some cool things he'd picked up while he was in the army overseas in his youth as well, and a bag of weed he never got around to smoking. Nice. My grandma has some really old timey photos in there too. I wonder if she'll be able to put names to the faces or if that knowledge is already lost to history. In any event, it surely will if I don't go over there and spend time with her while looking at them. I don't imagine that any of her kids will do it if they haven't already. Yeah. With a few exceptions we all pretty much stayed around this area. It wasn't really until my generation grew up that the family really spread out. Nobody moved out of the country yet, but it's a coast to coast thing. I hardly ever see any of my cousins anymore.

It's so funny seeing it in action for the first time. Having done my own taxes for over 20 years, even when they got quite complicated at times when I did things out of the ordinary like purchasing the house, I knew exactly what they were getting at when they were asking a million and one questions. I know exactly what things apply to me, and the only changes that ever occur to that would be in the beginning of the tax book in a section called "what's changed". If nothing has changed that pertains to me, then I do it the same as I did last year.
My aunt's taxes couldn't be any simpler. Just a W2 for wages from one job. No interest. No investments outside of a company retirement plan.
All it should take for me to file her taxes online is to put in her personal identifying information and the figures. It should be a 2 or 3 page ordeal at most. Not 80 pages to struggle through needlessly.
I think the problem is two-fold. Not only are they trying to confuse and frustrate the tax payers here, but they're also counterintuitively trying to dumb it all down to the lowest common denominator as well.

We got the expected cool-down and drizzle yesterday early AM, but then a fast-moving unexpected storm blew thru in the evening. It got dark and gusty, and there was lightning starting northeast moving south to our southeast but none overhead. Looks like Orange County might have gotten some rain tho!
Cold weather meant soup for dinner!

And this AM I saw TWO scrub jays picking up peanuts! They must be nesting nearby! I thought that maybe since our backdoor neighbor cut his jungle down they would have moved away, but I guess they found another suitable home!

It sits on the floor and it's label says "rattan style basket storage". It has 4 baskets. It fits great into a spot I cleaned up for it. It fits cans of soup and fish along with small baking supplies like a small bottle of vanilla and baking powder, baking soda. I also put my cupcake liners in there with one basket empty for other small food stuff.

Cold? Like 60 degrees?
It was actual 53 degrees here today. Melted most of the snow, but had the wind blowing so hard all day long that I was just waiting for the air raid sirens to tell us a tornado was coming.
We'll be paying for it tomorrow. Another 4 inches of snow coming our way and a few days with the highs in the 20's to follow it.

No worries. Just giving you the shit. I had to do that to my mom and step dad when they're down south bitching about cold night in Arizona to me while I was knee deep in snow as if they forgot what winter up here is like.
So far, if you don't include the heat bills, it's been a milder winter than last year at least.
Although we got 8" of snow the other night instead of the 4" max they'd told us we'd get, and I was outside working on that for over 4 hours yesterday.
Hopefully it will be done soon. You never know around here though. It will be 54 degrees on Tuesday, but then it's 24 degrees again on Wednesday. Winter and snow could and has hung on until the 2nd week of May.

Managed to do something besides regular chores. The Tung oil on the beframe took forever to set up, even after we brought it indoors! And bc I had tried to wipe a few areas after it was partially set but before it was fully dry, all I managed to do was pill up the gummed oil. So today managed to give the frame a light sanding and wipe the dust off. I think bc the oil filled in the pores, the surface is silky smooth... "Smooth as a baby's bottom" as my dad used to say! Toomorrow I'm going to experiment with staining the birch ply to match the beech frame (I sanded an inside portion of the plywood skirt to experiment with) and hopefully do one last VERY thinned tung oil coat (prolly 7:3 mineral spirits:tung) to restore the depth of color and shine.
Anyway, will see how it works. This is kind of "experiment as you go".
Monday I better have the whole house dusted bc I won't be dusting much after that.

If you are waiting for the deluge of hundreds of millions of returns before filing yours, then the only delay is them working through the backlog.

I filed mine at the end of January this year, on the very day that the document I needed was made available online. It couldn't be filed before that day.
They usually don't take 6 weeks, but if you go to the IRS website right now they will specifically state that you aren't supposed to expect a return if you mailed it for 6 weeks or 21 days if you efiled. They've said that for years. It might take longer now though since we went into this tax season and there were still 5 million altered returns that still hadn't been processed after they changed the rules on unemployment income after Biden* was sworn in.

I've posted about it in here before somewhere, but a large part of the problem with how lousy software works today is because coding has become extremely lazy and also much easier so it can be done by people who are hardly experts, all because there is so much horsepower on today's computers when compared to the mid-90's and before when you really had to be damn good at the job to make every single bit count.
Recently, I saw this video that does a great job explaining that in detail.
Also, another video that shows what a talented programmer could do with early video game consoles when porting games that shouldn't have even been able to run on them.
In the case of the Tax Software though, it was intentionally made to be as laborious and unusable as possible because a large portion of the people using it to "free" file will give up an end up paying for somebody else to do it.

We've hardly gotten any snow this season, has been mostly too cold - which cranks up the heating needs double.
South of me has gotten much snow, like 6ix seems to get hit a lot this year. But even Milwaukee and halfway from there to here have been nailed a bunch.
Haven't seen Snow Squalls in many years, but yesterday they created a mess. Lots of videos around of horizontal snow. 39 car pileup on big highway (Interstate style), and hundreds of accident calls PER COUNTY.

Most folks are not required to wait for employers to send them a W-2, but most folks do anyhow.
All of the needed data is either on your last paycheck of last year, or stuff like Employers Fed Tax ID Number are the same as on last year's W2.
I would always hand write the Box number 1. And then whatever data goes in that box, just like the year before. Do all the Box numbers that have pertinent data. Most data fields which were empty I wouldn't bother writing the Box number down, unless I wanted to be perfectly clear that certain data fields were exactly Zero.
Do that for each employer. I usually used up 1/3 of a lined sheet of paper per handwritten W2.
Remember, every digit of that data you submit is already in their computers, so they will know you did submit the correct numbers instead of rsndom jibberish.
Yes, if I waited until I got W2s mailed to me, I would get my refund in March or April. But just getting my refund in mid- or late January seemed easier and convenient. Their estimate is always the same, every year since the 1980s.
Tax rules state that if the data you send in is in error, you can file an amended W2 and Return without penalty before the Tax Deadline. But it is so easy I have never had an error that needed amending.
Remember, on Jan 2 the IRS has a pile of people just eager and happy to get their hands on a return and get that refund sent right out as fast as possible. If you wait for the deluge, they will be so bored and sluggish, with an avalanche of paper to process.
I don't know if efile causes some arbitrary delay, I never efiled. I felt a week or 3 delay to get my check in the mail was enough. When filing on Jan 1, I always got my refund check before I got my mailed W2s.

False. You are required to attach W2s to your federal and state returns. Maybe you don't have to attach them in Wisconsin, but you do in Indiana and Illinois. I would always hand write the Box number 1. And then whatever data goes in that box, just like the year before. Do all the Box numbers that have pertinent data. Most data fields which were empty I wouldn't bother writing the Box number down, unless I wanted to be perfectly clear that certain data fields were exactly Zero.
Do that for each employer. I usually used up 1/3 of a lined sheet of paper per handwritten W2.
Remember, every digit of that data you submit is already in their computers, so they will know you did submit the correct numbers instead of rsndom jibberish.
Yes, if I waited until I got W2s mailed to me, I would get my refund in March or April. But just getting my refund in mid- or late January seemed easier and convenient. Their estimate is always the same, every year since the 1980s.
Tax rules state that if the data you send in is in error, you can file an amended W2 and Return without penalty before the Tax Deadline. But it is so easy I have never had an error that needed amending.
Remember, on Jan 2 the IRS has a pile of people just eager and happy to get their hands on a return and get that refund sent right out as fast as possible. If you wait for the deluge, they will be so bored and sluggish, with an avalanche of paper to process.
I don't know if efile causes some arbitrary delay, I never efiled. I felt a week or 3 delay to get my check in the mail was enough. When filing on Jan 1, I always got my refund check before I got my mailed W2s.
I'm having a hard time believing any of this. Apparently you've never actually read the instructions for a Federal 1040. It specifically states that you are required to attach your W2. When you get your W2 forms, they even give you several copies. One says to attach to the Federal 1040. One for your State Return. One is just in case you need to send out a separate Local Form, but I've never lived in a state that requires it. The last is for your own personal records.
If you have done any of this in the past, and they actually paid you, that's great. I'd never take that chance when somebody owes me money. You're breaking their rules in the book every year you've filed without a W2.
At the very least, you're exposing yourself to some big potential problems if you ever make even one digit not correct on a form. Now, when they reject your return because of erroneous information, you're in the unenviable position of not only trying to get in touch with somebody at the IRS that will actually pick up the phone, but you're completely reliant on the low-level and/or low-IQ person on the other line to be able to fix this for you without the official W2 attached to your form verifying that taxes had been paid.

Don't be dumb. Of course I included W2s with my returns. The handwritten W2s which included all of the data that the printed and mailed W2s woul eventually have.
For Fed and also WI.
As long as my penmanship was legible, IRS never complained. I used block calligraphy from Drafting Class.
There might have been a couple times I didn't get a refund from State, so I would submit that check in April. The only times I used the pre-printed W2s. I might have actually typed the first one, before doing the handwritten.
What do you think you do if you lose a W-2, or it gets destroyed? Your dog eats it? You think you get a pass and don't need to file, or on time?
Copiers were not common bAck then. So, after handwriting 2 copies of W2, I admit that I looked them over and sent the better looking one to the Feds.
Never heard a peep from IRS or WDR. Until about 12 years ago when IRS sent me a letter saying that there was some deduction that I could have taken but didn't, so they amended my return for me and sent me the extra refund.

Well, I tried staining the plywood but it didn't work. I had tried it B4 on a tung oil- sealed piece of ply, and it worked fine. But this time, since we had to sand after applying the Tung oil, it opened the wood up again, unevenly. Also, it was too dark and not rosy enough.
I've attempted that stain on four different woods by now. One was matching new maple legs to a mahogany-like dresser. We had to use it more like a glaze in order to achieve the desired color. Also, I learned from experience- and online- that maple is a byatch to stain bc the grain keeps switching direction and the stain soaks in unevenly and winds up looking blotchy.
Then I tried it on sealed birch plywood and it worked great on that.
Then I used it on a raw wood beech drawer-pull, one that hubby had fabricated to replace a missing drawer-pull for the same dresser, and it worked great! I can't tell the original from the replacement. But beech is a close, evenly-grained wood which accepts stain uniformly.
Tried it last on birch plywood, the same plywood that I had experimented with before, but this had been sanded afterwards and, once again, uneven! So a lot depends on the wood and how it's been prepped. But if you're working with absorbent wood, or wood that changes grain, you need to seal it first.

Since staining wasa bust, I went on to trying a light coat of tung oil in mineral spirits, about 1:2. Most of the wood was beech, and it was evenly sealed, so a little (like, less than 1/4 c) went a long way! Right now the mineral spirits make the wood look wet, so I have to let it evaporate before I can see what the final result looks like. But since it went on evenly, it'll probably be OK

Checked in on the bed frame. The mineral spirits evaporated and the (very light) oiling restored gloss and depth, and eliminated the chalky look from sanding.

I'm wondering how much width you need between the drawer and the side of the opening if you use side-mounted drawer slides.
I'm going to have to fabricate my boxes out of various existing drawers I've pulled over the years, and I'll need to get the width right before I paint them and find out I made it too wide or too short.

He's made a dresser with drawers. The widest drawers are appx 4' wide (I'll measure later) with side-mounted drawer slides, but the carcasse, drawer slides, and drawers are very sturdy, so they don't sag across the width. I'll give you specs later.
I haven't bothered to figure out to post pix,yet. Just haven't had the time and focus. Where do you post pix to? I'm sure I could figure it out by doing a "reply with quote" and looking at your links, but if you get me started it would save me a lot of time. Sorry and thanks!
