Hey. There he is.

Ted's been crying since you've been gone.

How's the first terrible year of Biden*'s horrible presidency treating you?

P.S.

Barack Obama is President: Putin invades Crimea.

Donald Trump is President: Putin doesn't do shit.

Joe Biden* is President: Putin invades Ukraine.

One of these things is not like the other.

Putin is a thug; Ukraine is more or less blameless in all this; Donald Trump should be ashamed of himself; ditto for much of the Republican Party and its poltroonish "Putin is only doing this because Biden is weak" crap; every Western country should toss out Russian nationals and restrict visitor visas to one week; Europe needs to get more serious about military power; this is the first major European war in which one country has invaded another with the intent of permanently taking its territory.

Russia under Putin is a pariah nation. Whatever else you can say about the US invasion of Iraq—and you can say plenty—it was never an attempt to annex territory permanently. This is. Russia needs to be isolated from the rest of the world as long as it pursues this kind of war.

You might think this is a satirical story from The Onion, but it is the New York Times:

Putin Threatens Nuclear War Against The Planet, As Experts Question His Sanity

Putin made clear his true target is America’s “empire of lies,” and he threatened “consequences you have never faced in your history” for “anyone who tries to interfere with us.”

Given Russia’s nuclear arsenal, he said, “there should be no doubt that any potential aggressor will face defeat and ominous consequences should it directly attack our country.” He added: “All necessary decisions have been taken in this regard.”

I think Ukraine has already lost. The President of Ukraine just hasn't fled, yet, but this guy was NOT ready. Even last week he would not admit war was about to happen to him.

The governments of the EU which are actually controlled by the richest 1% of population will very possibly want to be friends with Putin, next year, because to permanently stop trading with Russia would reduce the wealth of the 1% wealthiest. As for the rest of voters, they don't want the high fuel prices and shortages caused by not trading with Russia, and they will express themselves when voting.

To see EU actually blow up the Kremlin and Putin? That would be too disruptive for EU to even think about it. They'd worry about who'd replace Putin. Much easier for America to give some anti-tank weapons to Ukraine and the EU be disappointed when Ukrainian soldiers use a few of the missiles and then resell the rest for a profit after fleeing Ukraine.

I hear you G. Truth be told I could chose to leave tomorrow, but for today I’m here.

I have long dispelled any notion of a firefly reboot G but with Disney now owning it there is hope. Disney is up to its neck in space shows. If it is rebooted this site will bang back to life unless all that are left are trolls. If there is to be a reboot it may not be too long off. Pushing back against the trolls may be what’s needed at the moment to allow a fireflyfans reboot as well.

1. Disney destroys everything it touches. If Disney reboots firefly, it won't have more than one season, and this time it will be well earned.

2. You need to get it out of your head that you are special or important. You are neither. None of us are. Nobody here is keeping a Firefly reboot from being made, and nobody here is going to do anything to make sure that one is made.

3. If this site stays up for the long haul, history will show that you were on the wrong side the whole time. You are not the good guy.

Why the US won’t send troops to Ukraine

In 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait in a naked war of territorial aggression. The next year, the US and an allied coalition intervened under the auspices of the United Nations Security Council, repulsing the Iraqi invasion. Today, as Russia is engaged in a similar aggressive war against Ukraine, there is no similar American effort in the offing — even as Ukrainian leaders have pleaded for Western assistance. Not gonna get it.

There are many dissimilarities between the situations in 1991 and 2022, but the biggest one is this: Saddam Hussein, rather famously, did not have nuclear weapons. Vladimir Putin has approximately 6,000 of them. And that makes all the difference.

Both before the invasion and afterward, the Biden administration has consistently ruled out the deployment of US troops. “Let me say it again: Our forces are not — and will not — be engaged in the conflict with Russia in Ukraine,” the president said in a Thursday address. Despite the warnings of American involvement from commentators on the Trumpist right and “anti-imperialist” left, there are no signs of this policy changing. Nuclear weapons are the chief reason why.

The logic of mutually assured destruction that defined the Cold War still works, to some degree: Russia’s arsenal makes any direct intervention in Ukraine riskier than any rational American leader could tolerate. In a sense, then, Russia’s nuclear weapons make it less likely that the conflict will kick off World War III.

But in another sense, Russia’s nuclear arsenal also helped create the conditions where Putin’s invasion could happen in the first place.

Political scientists call this the “stability-instability paradox,” the notion that nuclear deterrence has had the paradoxical effect of making certain kinds of conventional warfare more likely. Russia can be relatively confident that the United States and its allies won’t come to Ukraine’s defense directly, because such a clash carries the threat of nuclear war. This could make Putin more confident that his invasion could succeed.

If they get him, it is because he is an ass. Everybody but him seemed to realize you can't set up shop in a city that can be quickly taken over. That same stupidity kept him telling his people Russia won't invade. At first maybe to keep calm but even then, he should have had them prepare.

I was unaware that Russia owned any F1 Team. There was 1 Russian driver in F1 in 2021, Nikita Mazepin. He was so bad he placed 21st out of 20. He DNF'd 'did not finish,' in 5 races and simply 'did not show' for a 6th. His first race in '21 he did not make it through... wait for it... the first turn. I laughed so hard I almost hurt myself. So let 'em race. He was an embarrassment to all of Russia.

Yes, most things so far are purely symbolic. But some are powerful symbols, and if there are enough, together they can motivate change. Gazprom is being banned from sponsorship, Aeroflot banned from landing. Keep adding to those and we might find those 1% in the EU less likely to go along with Vlad the Evil Dipsht.

Less symbolism and more materialism, if the EU was not pouring HUGE quantities of money into Russia, Putin wouldn't feel invulnerable.

Putin believes the EU will keep buying his Russian brand of fuel. If Putin's belief is correct, he can invade Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and only expect more symbolism from the EU. The EU is gonna have to decide whether to either say goodbye to the Baltic States or goodbye to Russian fuel. If Putin is right and the EU will not cut back on fuel purchases than the EU can only fight him with more symbolism, and more words, and more refugees from Ukraine. I'm absolutely sure Putin will be pleased to send the EU many more refugees who don't speak Russian as their first language.

Russia’s economy is highly dependent on exports of commodities with revenues from sales of crude oil, petroleum products, and natural gas accounting for about a half of Russia’s federal budget. Russia’s main exports are: fuels and energy products (63 percent of total shipments) . . .

News from Feb 25, 2022 -- Question marks surround the U.S.-licensed Haas team, which has connections to Russia through its title sponsor Uralkali and driver Nikita Mazepin, a Russian-born driver who joined Haas in 2021. Mazepin’s father Dmitry, who controls the Uralkali firm that specializes in potash fertilizer, is a close confidant of Putin. Mazepin, 22, drove the car on Friday morning but did so in an all-white livery after its red and blue, which drew comparisons to the Russian flag, was removed.

I'm sure Putin doesn't care if some Russian kid drives, or doesn't. If a million Russian drivers couldn't race, it still wouldn't make Putin even blink at leaving Ukraine.

They've sanctioned Putin directly now which is unheard of. It makes the statement that they are done politically with him. That he is illegit. That's huge, and they are close to shutting down any commutations between Russia and any financial institutions outside of Russia. Again, that's huge.

Putin annexed both Crimea and Georgia and it was a cake walk. Neither of them nor the world fought back. He could not have seen this shit coming.

Russia, China, and Iran are the New Axis powers. Between them they have everything they need (armies, nukes, oil revenues) to take over half the world, especially when the weak and woke West is "too civilized" to do a damn thing about it.

During 1945 when Russia was invading Germany from the East and then sacking Berlin, the Russian Army was actually encouraged by their officers to terrorize the civilian population. As many as 3 million German women and girls were brutalized and raped, often gang-raped. I wonder how CNN and the rest of their oh-so-progressive ilk will live with that reality playing out in front of their smug self-righteous retarded faces.

I reject your premise that we need bullies and corrupt bad guys to deal with their bullies and corrupt bad guys. I further reject your premise that Russia China and Iran can take over half the world unless they currently hold that much territory. Their expansionism will be checked. Especially now since they are seeing the consequences Russia is and are going to suffer.

So far, it’s said the Russians have lost 14 planes, 8 helicopters, 102 tanks, 536 BBM, armored combat vehicles, 15 heavy machine guns, and 1 BUK missile since Feb. 24, according to Ukraine's military. The Kremlin also lost over 3,500 soldiers. Remember, this does not include the sanctions, and China is watching.

They’re getting their clocks cleaned by an army with half their resources and training. China is even less capable of actual fighting. Iran and North Korea are little more than an irritant. As for America being to woke to fight back, think again.

Without firing a shot America and our allies have helped Ukraine shame the Russian army. If Putin wants he’ll commit the rest of his troops and shut the active war down but the Ukrainian army has sent a chilling message to Moscow. And it is prepared to fight as an insurgency going forward.

You want to talk about woke? Europe has been woke. Reminded why they stand united as NATO. It’s one of the biggest consequences of Russia’s behavior. NATO now has a huge new commitment to sustaining, improving and expanding.

You're such a drama queen, 6ix. 6ix probably doesn't understand SWIFT. What is it?

The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) was founded in 1973 to replace the telex and is now used by over 11,000 financial institutions to send secure messages and payment orders. With no globally accepted alternative, it is essential plumbing for global finance.

Removing Russia from SWIFT would make it much harder for financial institutions to send money in or out of the country, delivering a sudden shock to Russian companies and their foreign customers — especially buyers of oil and gas exports denominated in US dollars.

What happens if Russia is removed from SWIFT?

There is precedent for removing a country from SWIFT.

SWIFT unplugged Iranian banks in 2012 after they were sanctioned by the European Union over the country’s nuclear program. Iran lost almost half of its oil export revenue and 30% of foreign trade following the disconnection, according to Shagina.

Senior Russian lawmakers have said that shipments of oil, gas and metals to Europe would stop.

“If Russia is disconnected from SWIFT, then we will not receive foreign currency, but buyers, European countries in the first place, will not receive our goods — oil, gas, metals and other important components,” Nikolai Zhuravlev, vice speaker of Russia’s upper house of parliament, said last week, according to state media outlet TASS.

More at https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/25/business/swift-russia-putin

6ix, without SWIFT, Europe and Russian trade would switch to bartering rather than payments in money. But the bartering could be cut off by closing railroads and pipelines from Russia, which takes more physical effort than disconnecting Russia from SWIFT.

Russia has taken steps in recent years to blunt the trauma should it be removed from SWIFT.

Moscow established its own payment system, SPFS, after it was hit by Western sanctions in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea. SPFS now has around 400 users, according to Russia’s central bank. Twenty percent of domestic transfers are currently done through SPFS, according to Shagina, but the size of messages are limited and operations are limited to weekday hours.

China’s fledgling Cross-Border Interbank Payment System, or CIPS, may provide another alternative to SWIFT. Moscow could also be forced to resort to using cryptocurrencies.

Truth! NATO looks more important than ever. On the one hand I wish they would go in and fight with Ukraine as if they were in NATO. On the other, more coldly practical hand, it might be easier and a hell of a lot less deadly to hope for a swift capture of Ukraine so A) fighting would stop, and B) sanctions and the corner that Putin has put himself into will just get darker and darker until some able bodied Russian puts a slug in his head.

Do you know how much junk the US buys from China? A hell of a lot more than Russia does. I personally sent a lot of money to China via Amazon over the last 2 years. They're not cutting us off any time soon.

An equally cold assessment G is, the longer it goes on Russia’s military loses more of its assets which is better for Europe. And in the long run the world. If the reports of what they’ve lost so far are true, that’s massive.

I don't think NATO does that sort of thing. NATO writes:

NATO’s success was reflected in the fact that, throughout the entire period of the Cold War, NATO forces were not involved in a single military engagement.

NATO’s first military operation -- In August 1995, NATO launched Operation Deliberate Force to compel an end to Serb-led violence in Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH). This successful air campaign paved the way to the signing of the Dayton Peace Accords in December 1995. https://www.nato.int/summit2009/topics_en/02-introduction_to_nato_oper

Since Bosnia-Herzegovina, NATO has tried a few military missions, but NATO has never before taken on a force as big as Russia. Since USA refuses to attempt to do the job, NATO forces won't step in. The job is too big for NATO.

Agreed G. Russias’ GDP was $1.638 trillion in 2021. The European Union's GDP was estimated to be $18.8 trillion in 2018. Add to that the U.S. gross domestic product which was $23.9 trillion for the fourth quarter of 2021. Why the fuck would China go full bore with backing Russia? They’ve got their own problems and their desperate not to make their situation worse. America is China's economy.

Is UEFA kicking all the Russian teams out of the sport? No, it is not. Also, a Formula 1 race will not be held in Russia on September 23-25. Truly a crushing blow to Putin. No, it is not. Will all Russian cars be kicked out of all races? No.

Neither of them nor the world fought back and because of that he could not have seen this shit coming.

I going to post my response to you G and then watch the video again.

Holy shit is right. At last count yesterday the Ukrainians took out 102 Russian tanks. After watching that demonstration it’s no wonder. They also took out over 500 armored personal carriers. Putin has to be shitting himself. He’s watching his army dissolve right in front of his eyes. I’ve heard it from different professional sources that the Russian military is scared shitless of our military. It's easy to see why.

As far as the hackers go, I was surprised like most he hasn’t used them more. Turns out the Russian military needs to use many of those same services themselves; go figure.

“Simpsons” showrunner, Al Jean, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter: "I hate to say it, but I was born in 1961, so 30 years of my life were lived with the specter of the Soviet Union. So, to me, this is sadly more the norm than it is the prediction," Jean observed. "We just figured things were going to go bad."

"Historical aggression never really goes away, and you have to be super vigilant," he continued.

He offered up a more in-depth explanation: "In 1998, when this clip aired, it was maybe the zenith of U.S.-Russia relations. But, ever since [Russian President Vladimir] Putin got in, almost everybody has made it clear that he’s a bad guy and bad things are going to happen. There is the kind of prediction, where we reference something that has happened, happening again — we hope it wouldn’t, but sadly, it does."

Putin's getting his H-bombs ready

Putin warned last week that countries who interfere with his invasion of Ukraine will face "consequences you have never seen."

Putin ordered the Russian defense minister and the chief of the military's General Staff to put the nuclear deterrent forces in a "special regime of combat duty." The move signals tensions could boil over into a nuclear war.

Putin spoke at a meeting Sunday with his top advisers and said NATO powers had made "aggressive statements" and that the West was imposing hard-hitting financial sanctions against Russia and himself.

"Western countries aren’t only taking unfriendly actions against our country in the economic sphere, but top officials from leading NATO members made aggressive statements regarding our country," Putin said in televised comments.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation" that Putin's order is an unacceptable escalation.

"It means that President Putin is continuing to escalate this war in a manner that is totally unacceptable and we have to continue to stem his actions in the strongest possible way," she said.

Poor Polish Russian Collaborator Signym, she is desperate to post good news for Putin. First comrade, Kiev has been under siege for a while now. No one is suggesting they can hold out forever, but they’ve kicked Russia’s ass so far even though they are complete underdogs.

When they finally fall it will not change the disgrace they have put upon the Russian military. After all, the Ukrainian army largely consists of women, young boys and old men, civilians. And the world has acknowledged that along with Putin's, your, army being a disgrace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly urged members of the NATO alliance to “close the skies.” This appears to be a request for a “no-fly zone” — deploying NATO aircraft to Ukrainian airspace in order to block Russia from using its air force in support of the invasion.

“A No Fly Zone is not a magical umbrella that prevents planes flying in a given area. It’s a decision to shoot at planes that fly in a given area,” explains Olga Oliker, the International Crisis Group’s director for Europe and Central Asia. “To put in a no fly zone is to go to war.”

The Biden administration appears to recognize the risk.
In a Thursday press conference, President Biden categorically ruled out direct US intervention in Ukraine: “Our forces are not — and will not — be engaged in the conflict with Russia in Ukraine.” This effectively takes any meaningful no-fly zone off the table, and there is no sign the president will change his mind.

Yet the calls for a no-fly zone (NFZ) are worth taking seriously because of what they reveal about a widespread yet mistaken mindset among many of America’s foreign policy elite. The people calling for intervention in Ukraine are stuck in the 1990s era of American hyperpower, where it seemed as though the US could impose its vision of global order at gunpoint virtually anywhere. The Ukraine war is one of the clearest demonstrations yet that this era is over — and a US policy that refuses to recognize this reality could prove catastrophic.

Putin is still trying to avoid using concentrated missiles and airstrikes to destroy Ukrainian defensive positions, to preserve his narrative of this not being a real war and not requiring that sort of use of firepower. As damaging as the strikes on Kyiv and other cities have been so far, we haven’t really seen the full capabilities that the Russian military has and can bring to bear, the way it has, for example, in Syria, or in fighting in Chechnya in the early 2000s.

Russian media is simply not portraying the war. To date, they’re claiming that the only fighting that’s happening is around the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, the proxies that Russia recognized, and they’re not showing fighting across the country, they’re not showing any Russian casualties, and rather than showing Russian footage, they’re trying to take Ukrainian footage out of context and use that to portray the war.

The Kremlin-run media is trying to draw a very sharp distinction between the Ukrainian population, which they seem to expect will greet Russia as liberators and Russia has no quarrel with them, and the regime in Kyiv, which they portray as being neo-Nazis and drug users. I do not know where that one came from. And it’s this interesting balance where I think it’s a mix of them trying to pitch to the Russian people that this is not a war against Ukraine, it’s a very targeted intervention to get rid of the regime.

We, frankly, were wrong about how rational the Kremlin was, and it seems very much that they have drunk their own Kool-Aid, so to speak. They may have actually believed that all they needed to do was take out the government in Kyiv that they do see as this foreign-imposed fascist government, and the Ukrainian population would be completely okay with that, which is just not the case.

Yeah. It's a real funny joke.

If you believe that the people of Russia are all James Bond villains or Boris and Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle.

The lowest quartile of people in the US are hurting now with the highest inflation we've seen in 40 years, and they certainly had nothing to do with US imperialism. But as bad as that sounds, it's dwarfed by the numbers you've just provided.

But it's never seemed to bother any of you when we constantly commit mass-murder via non-surgical drone strikes half a world away. What's a few tens of millions of people losing everything they've worked for and starving to death when it means we can take down one of your cartoon bogey men.

What may eventually give the Russians victory, especially in the crucial battle for control of Kyiv, is that there is a corps of veterans of the war in Syria. Some of these are experienced in urban warfare and participated in retaking the city of Aleppo from rebels against the Syrian government. However, the effort to do that involved massively bombing and destroying buildings in Aleppo to the point that it is a wrecked ruin. Will Putin irrationally do the same to the beautiful and historic city of Kyiv?

Americans tend to see the world in much the same way as President Joe Biden frames it in his speeches, divided neatly between “democracies” and “autocracies.” But the reality is that authoritarian states exist on a political spectrum depending on how much power is exercised by a single individual—and where states land on this spectrum has a big impact on matters of war and peace. At one end, you have civilian-run regimes, like Hu Jintao’s China or Leonid Brezhnev’s Soviet Union, where political power is checked and shared within a ruling party. At the other, you have personalist dictatorships like that of, say, Saddam Hussein, where rivals are purged, loyalists are rewarded, cults of personality flourish, and all authority runs through the glorious leader.

The political science literature suggests that personalist dictatorships are more erratic and dangerous to the outside world than other sorts of autocracies.

Researchers have found they are more likely to start wars, for instance (institutionalized civilian-run regimes are about as apt to use force as democracies), and also tend to perform worse militarily (not surprising, since their leaders are often surrounded by yes men). But while civilian-run regimes might be less apt to launch destructive, harebrained conflicts in the short term, in the long term they can still be ticking time bombs.

That’s because as they age, their intricate power structures often devolve and allow dictators to consolidate personal control. In a forthcoming paper, Andrew Leber and Matthew Reichert of Harvard University and Christopher Carothers of the University of Pennsylvania theorize that this tends to happen when there’s no influential old guard of political elites who can stop them. All of which pretty much sums up what has happened in Russia over the last two decades.

While the world’s news readers may long have thought of Vladimir Putin as a dictator, most Russia analysts and policymakers saw the Kremlin differently. And for most of Putin’s nearly 23-year journey in power, they were right to do so. What once existed, but not now, was a complicated regime beyond one man where lots of people exerted influence and could check Putin’s impulses.

Russian President Vladimir V. Putin announced a "special military operation" to "de-Nazify the Ukrainian government" so as to halt the supposed "genocide" being committed against Russian speakers in Ukraine. There is not a shred of justification for any of this. The extreme nationalist fascist groups in Ukraine do not support and are not part of the current Ukrainian government, whose leader is half Jewish. Putin has also complained of a supposed move of Ukraine to join NATO, but no such move has been going on at all.

This is pure and unadulterated aggression without a shred of justification. Reportedly missiles are now striking Ukraine's capital city, Kyiv. Putin has lost his mind.

Ukraine is trying to argue that Russia's taking the Soviet place on the UN Security Council was never debated and approved (unlike for China). That would be quite the coup, so to speak: kick Russia off the Security Council over a technicality. Putin hurt by his own kind of thinking.

Kick Russia off the U.N. Security Council!

Russia sits in one of the five permanent seats on the Security Council, and in theory could veto such a move, as well as block any attempt by the General Assembly to remove Russia from the UN altogether. But there has always been some question about the legal process by which the USSR's seat was transferred to Russia in the aftermath of the Soviet Union's collapse. After all, the constituent republics of the USSR declared in 1991 that the Soviet Union ceased to exist, and with it should have gone the legal right of any of those entities, including Russia, to sit on the Council.

There was never a formal process to admit Russia into the U.N. after the USSR's demise, and the Security Council seat was granted via a decision from the UN's legal counsel with no action requested from the General Assembly. That edict could be revoked, and the U.S. could demand a vote in the General Assembly on Russia's Security Council membership. Would such a maneuver save Kyiv? No, but Moscow must be besieged on all fronts if there is any hope of rescuing Ukrainians from a Russian occupation. The worst crisis in post-war Europe demands nothing less than concerted, dramatic action aimed at Moscow's total isolation, and the time to start is now.

Russia Is a Potemkin Superpower By Paul Krugman

The Ukraine war has revealed the Putin regime’s true weakness.

Beware, Vladimir Putin: Spring is coming. And when it does, you’ll lose much of whatever leverage you had left.

Before Putin invaded Ukraine, I might have described the Russian Federation as a medium-size power punching above its weight in part by exploiting Western divisions and corruption, in part by maintaining a powerful military. Since then, however, two things have become clear. First, Putin has delusions of grandeur. Second, Russia is even weaker than most people, myself included, seem to have realized.

It has long been obvious that Putin desperately wants to restore Russia’s status as a Great Power. His already infamous “there is no such thing as Ukraine” speech, in which he condemned Lenin (!) for giving his neighbor what Putin considers a false sense of national identity, made it clear that his aims go beyond recreating the Soviet Union — he apparently wants to recreate the czarist empire. And he apparently thought that he could take a big step toward that goal with a short, victorious war.

So far, it hasn’t worked out as planned. Ukrainian resistance has been fierce; Russia’s military has been less effective than advertised. I’ve been especially struck by reports that the early days of the invasion were hampered by severe logistical problems — that is, the invaders had a hard time providing their forces with the essentials of modern war, above all fuel. It’s true that supply problems are common in war; still, logistics is one thing advanced nations are supposed to be really good at.

But Russia is looking less and less like an advanced nation.

The truth is that I was being generous in describing Russia as even a medium-size power. Britain and France are medium-size powers; Russia’s gross domestic product is only a bit more than half as large as either’s. It seemed remarkable that such an economically underweight state could support a world-class, highly sophisticated military — and maybe it couldn’t.

That’s not to deny that the force ravaging Ukraine has immense firepower, and it may well take Kyiv. But I wouldn’t be surprised if post-mortems on the Ukraine war eventually show that there was a lot more rot at the heart of Putin’s military than anyone realized.

And Russia is starting to look even weaker economically than it did before it went to war.

Putin isn’t the first brutal dictator to make himself an international pariah. As far as I can tell, however, he’s the first to do so while presiding over an economy deeply dependent on international commerce — and with a political elite accustomed, more or less literally, to treating Western democracies as their playground.

For Putin’s Russia isn’t a hermetic tyranny like North Korea or, for that matter, the old Soviet Union. Its standard of living is sustained by large imports of manufactured goods, mostly paid for via exports of oil and natural gas.

This leaves Russia’s economy highly vulnerable to sanctions that might disrupt this trade, a reality reflected in Monday’s sharp plunge in the value of the ruble despite a huge increase in domestic interest rates and draconian attempts to limit capital flight.

Before the invasion it was common to talk about how Putin had created “fortress Russia,” an economy immune to economic sanctions, by accumulating a huge war chest of foreign currency reserves. Now, however, such talk seems naive. What, after all, are foreign reserves? They aren’t bags of cash. For the most part they consist of deposits in overseas banks and holdings of other governments’ debt — that is, assets that can be frozen if most of the world is united in revulsion against a rogue government’s military aggression.

True, Russia also has a substantial amount of physical gold held within the country. But how useful is this gold as a way to pay for things the Putin regime needs? Can you really conduct large-scale modern business with ingots?

Finally, as I noted last week, Russia’s oligarchs have sta

Putin Starting to Worry About His Strategy After Trump Calls Him Smart
Satire by Andy Borowitz

MOSCOW (The Borowitz Report)—Vladimir Putin has become “deeply worried” about his strategy after learning that Donald J. Trump called him smart, Kremlin sources have revealed.

After Trump praised Putin Saturday night at the Conservative Political Action Conference, in Orlando, the Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, reluctantly shared a video of the disturbing moment with the Russian President.

“As Putin watched Trump call him smart, all the blood drained from his face,” a source said. “He was clearly shaken.”

After watching the video of Trump, Putin spent a sleepless night in consultation with Russian military and intelligence officials to determine where and how he had gone wrong.

“He’s rethinking everything now, and he’s in a very fragile state of mind,” the source said. “If it comes out that Don, Jr., or Eric thinks he’s smart, that could break him.”

Meanwhile, Donald J. Trump doubled down on his support for the Russian President, offering Putin advice on declaring Russia bankrupt.

Pentagon official says Russian troops have 'deliberately punched holes' in their own gas tanks 'presumably' to avoid combat as morale declines: report

Some Russian troops have "deliberately punched holes in their vehicles' gas tanks" as morale among the Russians declines, a senior US official said.

The troops appear to be self-sabotaging in order to avoid combat, the unnamed senior Pentagon official said, per The New York Times. The official added that many of the Russian troops are young and inexperienced in combat, and they are facing dwindling food and fuel resources.

Televangelist Pat Robertson came out of his retirement to say Russia’s president Vladimir Putin was “compelled by God” to invade Ukraine.

The televangelist added that Mr Putin’s attack on Ukraine was in preparation for a massive “end times” invasion of Israel.

The 91-year-old insisted this was all a part of an “end times” battle and that Mr Putin was just following God’s plan.

Mr Robertson said: “People say that Putin’s out of his mind. Yes, maybe so. But at the same time, he’s being compelled by God. He went into Ukraine but that wasn’t his goal. His goal was to move against Israel, ultimately.”

The ageing televangelist continued to say that Russia was using Ukraine as a “staging area” and God had put “hooks” in the Russian president’s “jaws” for a reason to draw him to this stage.

“Is Putin mad? Is Putin crazy? Perhaps. But God says I am going to put hooks in your jaws, I am gonna draw you into this… whether you like it or not,” he said.

Mr Robertson made an appearance on The 700 Club on the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) on Monday and claimed God had his plan that was being implemented via Mr Putin.

“All of those troops there are going to be coming against Israel in the latter days. And God says, ‘I am going to take care of it’,” he said.

He told the viewers to “read your Bible because it’s coming to pass”.

Meanwhile, Kyiv was rocked by massive explosions just hours after Russian and Ukrainian delegates held ceasefire negotiations in Belarus.

It is not only Pat Robertson who believes this:

In Ezekiel 38 and 39, a description is given of a war between Israel and a nation which many have identified as Russia. The two chapters mentioned describe the invasion of the land of Israel by the armies of Russia and the nations that are associated with her. The Scriptures are plain that this is a military invasion and reveal many details about the situation existing at the time of that invasion.
