But then Stalin didn't keep track of how many Ukrainians he murdered before WWII. 4 million. Putin says Stalin killed none, it was the weather he says, but you know how dishonest Putin is. No Russians were trialed and executed for those killings, either.

Kremlin anticipates operation to end soon, maybe within "days".
https://www.rt.com/russia/553495-operation-ukraine-end-days-kremlin/
The only military onjective that is within "days" is the destruction of a large part of Ukraine's army in SE Ukraine.
Meanwhile, I've been looking for General Gerasimov in the news, and he is nowhere to be found, indicationg a possible planning/military intelligence failure. (Based on human intel disinfo about the morale of the Ukie army and/or the "dug in" nature of Ukie positions).
I have no doubt that Russia could "win" the entire Ukraine, but what would "winning" look like? If Mariupol is any indication it would require Russian army losses, the destruction of alot of civilian infrastructure (which Russia would be responsible for fixing) and overseeing a resentful people. Cost v reward doesn't pencil out.
I think Russia will aim for achieving most of its goals by splitting off SE and coastal Ukraine and negotiating neutrality from "rump" Ukraine. Being practical.
Meanwhile, if Russia's other goals in this hybrid war were to
expose the west's hatred of Russia and Russians and solidify the Russian populatin
expose the risky nature of dollar-denominated assets
split the world and commit China to the Russian side
fully divorce Russia's economy and finances from the west
I'd say ... job well done.

Slovakia is sending its S-300 surface-to-air missile system to Ukraine, it announced Friday, and at the same time, the U.S. announced it is moving one of its Patriot missile batteries to Slovakia to replace it. The Slovak military has about 45 missiles for its S-300 system, meaning about 45 Russian planes can be shot down by Ukraine. S-300s can fire missiles hundreds of miles and knock out cruise missiles as well as aircraft.
There has been talk of such an arrangement since last month when Slovakian defense minister Jaroslav Nad’ said his country was ready to deliver its Soviet-era S-300 to Ukraine. "Should there be situation that we have a proper replacement or that we have a capability guaranteed for a certain period of time, then we will be willing to discuss the future of S-300 system," Slovakia's Prime Minister Eduard Heger said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had mentioned S-300s by name when he spoke to U.S. lawmakers by video last month, appealing for defense systems that would allow Ukraine to “close the skies” to Russian planes and missiles.

NBC News has a new report out citing multiple anonymous US officials, humorously titled "In a break with the past, U.S. is using intel to fight an info war with Russia, even when the intel isn't rock solid."
The officials say the Biden administration has been rapidly pushing out "intelligence" about Russia's plans in Ukraine that is "low-confidence" or "based more on analysis than hard evidence", or even just plain false, in order to fight an information war against Putin.
The report says that toward this end the US government has deliberately circulated false or poorly evidenced claims about impending chemical weapons attacks, about Russian plans to orchestrate a false flag attack in the Donbass to justify an invasion, about Putin's advisors misinforming him, and about Russia seeking arms supplies from China.,

Why Ukraine Is Winning
Battles reveal more than they decide. Battles in which the outcome is truly up for grabs are rare, and battles that prove decisive in achieving a political goal are rarer still. Instead, battles demonstrate how effectively combatants planned, prepared, and executed before the fighting began. The result of a battle exposes not only how well matched the sides are but also how the war might unfold in the future. In that sense, the outcome of the Battle of Kyiv was never in doubt. Russia’s and Ukraine’s preparations for the fight essentially preordained the result. But the Battle of Kyiv has revealed a great deal about why Ukraine has done so much better in the war than many analysts predicted.
. . .
Ukraine, however, has not yet won the war. With their defeat in the Battle of Kyiv, the Russians have started to concentrate in the east and south of Ukraine, hoping to set up a defensive perimeter that the Ukrainians will have to attack if they hope to regain lost territory. The Ukrainian way of war will have to adapt. The Ukrainians, having witnessed the Russian failures in heavy assault, may decide to avoid making the same mistakes and instead continue their light, attritional warfare. This will probably not result in a swift end to the war, but it offers the possibility of draining Russian military and political will, allowing Ukraine to achieve many of its aims in negotiations. The Ukrainian way of war could yet achieve what once seemed all but impossible: victory.

SIG pulls most of her information that she posts here from this blog and stupidly defends it as a reputable source. As she continues to do so I will regenerate this thread to remind all it is a corrupted blog designed to create havoc rather than informing.
Below are the names of those behind zero hedge. Don't miss what I've highlighted in red below. This folks is why comrade troll SIG loves to quote zero hedge.
In addition, Lokey said he faced constant pressure to frame stories in-line with a particular world-view, which he described as “Russia=good. Obama=idiot. Bashar al-Assad=benevolent leader. John Kerry=dunce. Vladmir Putin=greatest leader in the history of statecraft.”
All of this matches SIG's playbook here and Putin's globally; exactly.
The men behind zero hedge
Colin Lokey, a 32-year-old former Seeking Alpha director
Daniel Ivandjiiski, a 37-year-old Bulgarian-born former hedge fund employee who was barred for insider trading in 2008
Tim Backshall, a 45-year-old credit derivatives strategist
Despite its populist tone, Lokey told Bloomberg he recently left Zero Hedge because he didn’t see eye-to-eye with the others when it came to editorial vision.
“Zero Hedge ceased to serve that public service years ago,” Lokey said. “They care what generates page views. Clicks. Money.”
Lokey claims Zero Hedge’s focus on traffic and revenue is hypocritical, but Ivandjiiski sees things differently.
Finally, Zero Hedge addressed the accusations of systematic bias in its content.
“We are certainly ok with being the object of other’s conspiracy theories, in this case completely false ones since we have never been in contact with anyone in Russia, or the US, or any government for that matter,” Zero Hedge says.
The site claims it has never accepted a dime of funding outside of advertising revenue and that Lokey was never pressured about how to frame his articles or editorialized.
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/zero-hedge-unmasked-theres-more-1427301

According to the Bloomberg article, three men have been churning out all of the content at Zero Hedge, using the joint pseudonym “Tyler Durden” from the Brad Pitt film “Fight Club.” The 1999 cult film, according to Rolling Stone, is “about being young, male and powerless against the pacifying drug of consumerism. It’s about solitude, despair and bottled-up rage.” That ethos is frequently on display at Zero Hedge.
The three “Tyler Durdens” outed by Bloomberg reporters are Colin Lokey, who has now left Zero Hedge in a fit of pique and is responsible for handing over the internal chat sessions from Zero Hedge on traffic-building strategies and other matters. Bloomberg says “the other two men are Daniel Ivandjiiski, 37, the Bulgarian-born former analyst long reputed to be behind the site, and Tim Backshall, 45, a well-known credit derivatives strategist.”
The article notes that “Ivandjiiski has a multimillion-dollar mansion in Mahwah, N.J., and Backshall lives in a plush San Francisco suburb,” suggesting these are “not exactly reflections” of the anti-capitalism reflected in the moniker “Tyler Durden.”

After she played it, a group of girls stayed behind during recess and quizzed her on her views.
“Ukraine is a separate country, a separate one,” Ms. Dubrova, 57, told them.
“No longer,” one of the girls shot back.
A few days later, the police came to her school in the port town of Korsakov. In court, she heard a recording of that conversation, apparently made by one of the students. The judge handed down a $400 fine for “publicly discrediting” Russia’s Armed Forces. The school fired her, she said, for “amoral behavior.”
“It’s as though they’ve all plunged into some kind of madness,” Ms. Dubrova said in a phone interview, reflecting on the pro-war mood around her.
With President Vladimir V. Putin’s direct encouragement, Russians who support the war against Ukraine are starting to turn on the enemy within.
The episodes are not yet a mass phenomenon, but they illustrate the building paranoia and polarization in Russian society. Citizens are denouncing one another in an eerie echo of Stalin’s terror, spurred on by vicious official rhetoric from the state and enabled by far-reaching new laws that criminalize dissent.
There are reports of students turning in teachers and people telling on their neighbors and even the diners at the next table. In a mall in western Moscow, it was the “no to war” text displayed in a computer repair store and reported by a passer-by that got the store’s owner, Marat Grachev, detained by the police. In St. Petersburg, a local news outlet documented the furor over suspected pro-Western sympathies at the public library; it erupted after a library official mistook the image of a Soviet scholar on a poster for that of Mark Twain.
In the western region of Kaliningrad, the authorities sent residents text messages urging them to provide phone numbers and email addresses of “provocateurs” in connection with the “special operation” in Ukraine, Russian newspapers reported; they can do so conveniently through a specialized account in the Telegram messaging app. A nationalist political party launched a website urging Russians to report “pests” in the elite.
“I am absolutely sure that a cleansing will begin,” Dmitri Kuznetsov, the member of Parliament behind the website, said in an interview, predicting that the process would accelerate after the “active phase” of the war ended. He then clarified: “We don’t want anyone to be shot, and we don’t even want people to go to prison.”
But it is the history of mass execution and political imprisonment in the Soviet era, and the denunciation of fellow citizens encouraged by the state, that now looms over Russia’s deepening climate of repression. Mr. Putin set the tone in a speech on March 16, declaring that Russian society needed a “self-purification” in which people would “distinguish true patriots from scum and traitors and simply spit them out like a fly that accidentally flew into their mouths.”
In the Soviet logic, those who choose not to report their fellow citizens could be viewed as being suspect themselves.
“In these conditions, fear is settling into people again,” said Nikita Petrov, a leading scholar of the Soviet secret police. “And that fear dictates that you report.”
In March, Mr. Putin signed a law tha

An eighth grader asked her teacher why Russia was being banned from sports competitions in Europe.
“I think that’s the right thing to do,” Ms. Gen responded. “Until Russia starts behaving in a civilized manner, this will continue forever.”
“But we don’t know all the details,” a girl said, referring to the war.
“That’s right, you don’t know anything at all (about the war in Ukraine),” Ms. Gen said.
A recording of that exchange appeared on a popular account on Telegram that often posts inside information about criminal cases. The Federal Security Service, a successor agency to the K.G.B., called her in and warned her that her words blaming Russia for the bombing of a maternity hospital in Mariupol, Ukraine, last month were “100 percent a criminal case.”
She is now being investigated for causing “grave consequences” under last month’s censorship law, punishable by 10 to 15 years in prison.
The USA has no such laws as Russia has.

I have read stories ... unfortunately, links can't be found now ... of people arrested for saying "bad things" about Ukraine in Germany and Britain. English-language Russian websites have been banned. Even Russian classical composers and authors, and cats, dogs, and trees have been banned!
Biden* wants Republicans to be labeled as "domestic terrorists", the FBI is investigting parents for questioning school curricula, and famous people are being criticized and threatened for being anti-Zelensky. People have been stuck in jail for months, including solitary confinement, for tresspass (hilariously labeled as "insurrection"). The threat to personal liberty and job security for expressing a different POV is real.

For example, Dimitri Panin claims that 57,000,000 to 69,500,000 people were killed and says that estimates of authors in the West vary from 45,000,000 to 80,000,000. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn mentions a figure of 66,000,000 calculated by an emigre professor of statistics. And D.G. Stewart-Smith gives an estimate of 31,000,000 killed in repression. Like Dyadkin’s, some estimates have been based on demographic analyses, as Medvedev’s 22,000,000 to 23,000,000 total (1918-53).
For lack of a thorough statistical accumulation and analysis of Soviet genocides and mass murders from 1917 to recent years, I had to undertake at least an initial effort in this direction. At first, the result was to be a chapter in a monograph on twentieth-century genocides and mass killing. But it soon became clear that the Soviets themselves are responsible for so many genocides and that so many different kinds of mass killings had occurred that to unravel and present the detailed events, institutions, and related statistics involved would require a monograph itself. Thus I wrote this book.

The head of Russia's Orthodox Church called on people on Sunday to rally around the authorities as Moscow pursues its military intervention in Ukraine.
Patriarch Kirill has previously made statements defending Moscow's actions in Ukraine and views the war as a bulwark against a Western liberal culture that he considers decadent.
"Let the Lord help us unite during this difficult time for our Fatherland, including around the authorities," the Interfax news agency quoted Kirill, 75, as saying at a sermon in Moscow.
"May the authorities to be filled with responsibility for their people, humility and the readiness to serve them even if it costs them their life," added the patriarch, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin.
On Sunday, he said that once the population unites around the authorities, "there will be genuine solidarity and the ability to repel enemies both external and internal..."

In contrast to Patriarch Kirill telling Russians to die for Russia:
During his Palm Sunday homily, Pope Francis denounced "the folly of war" that leads people to commit "senseless acts of cruelty."
"When we resort to violence ... we lose sight of why we are in the world and even end up committing senseless acts of cruelty. We see this in the folly of war, where Christ is crucified yet another time," he said.
Francis lamented "the unjust death of husbands and sons" ... "refugees fleeing bombs" ... "young people deprived of a future" ... and "soldiers sent to kill their brothers and sisters."

1) Russia has the 2nd largest military in the world. And Putin has threatened, recently and several times, to nuke any nation interfering. That does not signify peace.
2) The Russia Orthodox Church Patriarch (and close personal Putin friend) asks Russians to die for Russia, specifically fighting in Ukraine. Does that sound warlike? In contrast, the Pope calls for peace, which actually does sound like what religious leaders would be preaching.
3) The Russian Army crossed over a border to start a fight. It isn't Ukraine's Army marching toward Moscow.
4) Russia passed a new law forbidding using the word war. Go to jail for 15 years before you have a trial. Your time in jail before your trial starts will count toward serving your sentence, which makes this new law very civilized.
5) In the last 100 years about 100 million people have been killed by Russia, mostly people who know Russian either as their first, second, or third language.
6) When Russia has a political problem with somebody, they end up killed. There is a wiki article about those political assassination: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Soviet_and_Russian_assassination
s
Signym, that's 6 reasons why Russia is actually killing Ukrainians and stealing their land. Russia is NOT actually overthrowing a Nazi government oppressing Ukrainians. That is a cover story for Russia's real purpose.
Russia, a society which has wallowed in evil but is unwilling to face the truth about its own past, let alone confess and repent it, is condemned to offend again.

Yanno, maybe there is something fundamentally fucked-up with your brain.
Might want to consider that.
Again
Fortunately, Trump is not President. It would be best to NOT have Harry Truman (infamous for nuking Japan and the Korean War) or Donald Trump as future Presidents. Both showed they are not trustworthy with life and death decisions. Truman was an accident, only getting to be President because FDR needed a different V.P. to win a fourth term. FDR should have considered that Truman was not a very stable genius. Neither is Trump.
The Pentagon would not launch nukes when Nixon was mentally deranged by Watergate. Same when Trump was deranged. So there are a few unwritten safety features in the USA to stop a President who is not a very stable genius. Two days after the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, President Donald Trump’s top military adviser, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley, single-handedly took secret action to limit Trump from potentially ordering a dangerous military strike or launching nuclear weapons.

No reason to think Putin is limited by unwritten safety features like USA Presidents are limited.

Several European leaders have made efforts to show solidarity with battle-scarred Ukraine.
Zelenskyy argued that Russia’s aggression “was not intended to be limited to Ukraine alone.” The “entire European project is a target,” he said. “That is why it is not just the moral duty of all democracies, all the forces of Europe, to support Ukraine’s desire for peace,” Zelenskyy said. “This is, in fact, a strategy of defense for every civilized state.”

Ukraine’s survival requires the sustained support of its most important ally, the United States. Time will not be on Ukraine’s side. If the war drags on for months, it will grow murkier to Americans watching at a distance; its moral clarity will start to blur. Ukrainians’ justifiable rage at all things Russian will produce images that foreigners will find less easy to love than the picture of a string quintet performing in the ruins of a Kharkiv metro station.
The fate of Ukrainian democracy depends in part on American staying power. And in turn, the health of American democracy depends in part on Ukraine. If Vladimir Putin succeeds in demolishing Ukraine, converting its fragments into the vassal states of a new Russian empire, then Putin will have won his bet that what matters in global affairs is raw power, that oil and gas are more important than freedom and justice, that the West is too tired and comfortable to sacrifice for its supposed values — that, as he said last summer, “the liberal idea has become obsolete.”
In the U.S., a Russian victory will free Donald Trump, his followers in the Republican Party, and the right-wing media of any need to pretend that they ever objected to Putin’s war. Trump will strengthen his grip on the party, compelling other Republicans to go along or be tagged as accomplices of woke Democrats, weak Europeans, and corrupt Ukrainians.
If, on the other hand, Putin’s regime of militarized kleptocracy — fascism without the inspiration — suffers an unmistakable defeat, it will diminish American authoritarians of all types. Ukraine’s win might start to clear out some of the reflexive cynicism that corrodes our politics.

One thing westerners have a hard time understanding about Eastern Europe: for the last couple hundred of years there has not been literally a single generation of people in any country neighboring with Russia, that didn’t suffer from Russia’s actions in some way or another. None
Some nations survived genocides (yes, multiple times), some were just occupied and had puppet governments for decades. Many were deported, imprisoned, killed. Intellectual elites were cleansed or deported in the best case.
Ask people of Baltic nations, ask Poles, ask Czechs, ask Finns, ask Asian nations if ex-Soviet republic what they think of Russia overall.
They all, nations with different cultures, languages and religions will tell you: Russia means aggression, occupation, genocide, deportations, repressions, Russification, expropriation of culture, elimination of national memory, GULAG.
Ask Russians what they think of these countries, and they will tell you that Kazakhs, Moldovans, Ukrainians, Finns, Estonians, Lithuanians, Latvians, Poles, Czechs and many other are just Russophobes!
All Russia’s neighbors are just russophobes for no apparent reasons. Nazis!
Now, many people in the west often come up with an argument like “but it’s not all Russians! You can’t blame them all!”
Well, first, the vast majority of Russians do support the war of aggression in some form or another. Watch this, I assure you these people represent 90% of RU
Watch on twitter https://twitter.com/bopanc/status/1510950346742509570
But what’s even more important, the argument “but not all Russians”, especially when it comes from westerners resembles another really manipulative and ugly argument often used in discussion about violence against women, which sounds exactly like that: “but not all men!”
Sounds familiar yet, huh? But not all men rape women! Not all men are sexist! Not all men this, not all men that! But you would probably say that ok, but if you’re not vocal about this, you don’t really help, in fact you still play on the side of evil by choosing to stay aside.
If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of problem!
Now, there are millions or Russians living abroad in free democratic countries where nothing is threatening them for expressing their opinion. Can you show me at least one anti-war rally organized by Russians abroad?
I’ll show you one. Here.
Oh, wait! This is not an anti war protest! This is a pro-war rally of Russians living abroad for years, some probably even decades!

We're talking about Russia, dear. Japan? Too funny.
I also think it funny you would compare people to flies. That's a very Putin attitude. He thinks very little of his own people. Sends them off to die in Ukraine because he wants more land.
And thirdly, no one, NO ONE, does lame @ss misinformation propaganda as often or as poorly as Russia. It's bad enough that they kill civilians trying to get away from war, but then make it worse by lying about it when it's so obvious they did it. Why do they bother? Why do you bother?

I think I'm seeing a pattern of Russian behavior. Russia attacks. Russia steals some land from Finland. Russia says Finland hates Russia. Russia blames Finland for Russia invading Finland. Russia is puzzled by how awful Finland's behavior is toward Russia. What did Russia ever do to deserve such abuse from Finland? Russia did nothing to deserve this! So let's not pretend is was just Big Bad Russia doing the invading, m'kay?
Until recently ... and I mean, the past few years ... Finns felt rather favorbaly towards Russia. It wasnt until constant anti-Russian propaganda that the attitude in Finland changed.
The reason for the favorable attitude was because Finland achieved independence from Sweden thanks to Russian rule, which made Finland an indepedent duchy under Tsar Alexaander of Russia leading to Finnish independence in 1917.
AFA Finland before WWII, it collaborated with Nazi Germany, a history that Finns prefer to forget. (Swedes also collaborated with Nazi Germany)

The Ukrainian Sovereignty Act of 2022 would ensure Ukrainians, whether they are US citizens or not, can seek monetary damages through the US courts for any losses incurred as a result of the Russian invasion, paid out by assets seized from Russia or Russian oligarchs the US government has sanctioned.
Tens of billions of dollars the Bank of Russia has stored in the US, not to mention the seized assets of other Russians and Russian entities facing sanctions, could be available to help compensate Ukrainian refugees and survivors of the war.
Ukraine could file a lawsuit in the United States and use any Russian funds to help rebuild the hospitals, schools and other structures that the Russian military destroyed during this unlawful invasion.

From the Russians' war in Finland, Hitler correctly predicted that Russians couldn't fight worth a damn. What Hitler got wrong was how many Russians he'd have to kill to get Stalin to surrender. With Stalin, the answer was kill all the Russians.
The result? Germany killed 27,000,000 Russians versus Russia killing 2,742,909 Germans on the Eastern Front. Russians were worse at fighting Germans than at fighting Finns.
(Germany kept an accurate count while Stalin couldn't give a damn how many Russians died.)
If the death toll in Ukraine shows that Russians can't fight worth damn compared to Ukrainians, China might reasonably attempt what Germany tried -- but this time China plans on killing all Russians and taking their land. Putin's future looks as hazardous as Stalin's if Russia gets beaten by Ukraine. To save himself from China, Putin will try to kill the maximum number of Ukraine civilians to show the Chinese that Russians are competent murderers. I bet the day is coming when Putin wishes he hadn't invaded Ukraine like Stalin wished he hadn't invaded Finland.

Despots go after the press first. Authoritarians are terrified of a free, independent press in Russia, and here at home.
Putin’s military bombed broadcast towers in Kyiv and kidnapped, tortured, or killed reporters because he knew any resistance movement relies on journalists to stay informed and strong. He brutally cracked down on what remained of his country’s independent media for the same reason. The feisty Echo of Moscow radio station was blocked and its FM signal, in a true middle-finger move, taken over by the propaganda outfit Sputnik. Mediazona, the independent site founded by members of Pussy Riot, was blocked by the censors for calling the war a war. The venerable Novaya Gazeta self-censored “with terrible shame” by removing its war coverage from the internet, then suspended publication.
A few weeks ago, I got an emergency message from one of these brave, independent newsrooms. My sister, who happens to be working for a reader-supported news organization in Germany, had been in touch with Meduza, the largest independent Russian newsroom that was still able to report the truth about Russia, for Russians. When Putin brought the hammer down, Meduza’s team grabbed their go bags and left the country. But their reporting didn’t stop, because they had planned for this. They were set up on servers outside Russia, and had taught their readers about how to get around the censors.
That week, though, Meduza did lose its lifeblood: the 30,000 readers who made their journalism possible. (Yes, reader-supported journalism is a global movement, and as a Mother Jones reader, you are part of it.) Because of Putin’s crackdown and the Western sanctions, they could no longer send Meduza money.
I got to meet Meduza’s editor-in-chief, Ivan Kolpakov, and some of his colleagues on an early morning video call. “People are surrounded by propaganda narratives,” he said. “A lot of people believe that the Russian military is destroying military infrastructure and not bombing cities. They don’t know about the refugees. Our role is to bring this war to our readers. We need to destroy this wall between the war and Russians.”

Putin’s war didn’t start with the invasion, and it’s not just against Ukraine. It began at least eight years ago, when he launched both his assault on Crimea and his first big offensive in what the British journalist Carole Cadwalladr calls the Great Information War. That offensive was directed against the West, including the United States.
What does an information war look like? Look around. It’s about disrupting the infrastructure of conversation and poisoning the way people relate to each other.
For the past 10 years, Putin and his government have been using propaganda, especially on social media and TV, to stoke division, anger, and fear. In Russia, Kremlin-friendly media is full of stories about how refugees turned Western Europe into a hellhole, and how LGBTQ+ people are destroying traditional values. (Here’s a great thread from our friends at CODA Story, another reader-supported newsroom based in Eastern Europe.) Whiteness, Christianity, and traditional gender roles are under attack, the narrative goes, and need to defend themselves with violence if necessary.
Ring a bell at all? Those are, to a tee, also the themes of right-wing media in America and, therefore, of the Republican Party. (Check out Republican Senatorial Committee chair Rick Scott’s American “rescue plan”: The “militant left” controls the government and most of corporate America, he says—without a hint of irony—and it wants to change or destroy “American history, patriotism, the nuclear family, gender, traditional morality, capitalism…” and the list goes on.) And like the Kremlin’s lies, homegrown disinformation is growing ever more brazen, as we saw over and over in the Ketanji Brown Jackson hearings.
When I heard the heartbreaking stories of Ukrainians trying to convince their parents in Russia that the war is real, it reminded me of trying to reason with a loved one who gets their news from Fox News. That’s propaganda at work.
Which, probably, is why Tucker Carlson is such a fan of Putin’s — and vice versa. As my colleague David Corn revealed:
On March 3, as Russian military forces bombed Ukrainian cities as part of Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion of his neighbor, the Kremlin sent out talking points to state-friendly media outlets with a request: Use more Tucker Carlson.
‘It is essential to use as much as possible fragments of broadcasts of the popular Fox News host Tucker Carlson,” advises the 12-page document written in Russian.

Russian TV Is Filled With Images of Bucha's Dead, Stamped With the Word "Fake"
Because the horrifying truth of what happened in Bucha, Ukraine, during the Russian occupation last month is unpalatable to officials in Moscow, the Russian government has invented a lurid fantasy to tell its own people.
For the past week, Russian television, which is under the full control of the government, has presented as fact the fictional version of events crafted by the state — that the bodies of murdered civilians discovered in Bucha last week were planted there after the Russian withdrawal. According to Russian news anchors, correspondents, and pundits, the apparent crime scene discovered after the Russian retreat was a monstrous plot to frame Russian soldiers as war criminals, carried out by Ukraine’s intelligence service and its Western partners.
To sustain the deception that the killings in Bucha happened after Russia’s four-week occupation ended, news broadcasts and discussion programs have rigorously avoided mentioning that the government’s story has been contradicted by drone footage, satellite images, and witness testimony. But the most surprising element of the coordinated effort to keep the Russian public from learning the truth is that the state television channels most Russians rely on for their news have reported incessantly on the video — showing dead bodies lining a street in the Kyiv suburb hour after hour.
Russian viewers, instead of being discouraged from seeing videos that implicate their soldiers in war crimes, have instead been forced to watch the brutal images of dead bodies lining the street of Bucha over and over — but always accompanied by conspiratorial claims that the victims were either actors, pretending to be dead, or people who were killed by Ukrainian forces after Russian forces left. In most cases, the video of more than a dozen bodies sprawled on the pavement along Bucha’s Yablonska Street was also stamped with the word “fake,” written in red letters in English and Russian.
As a result of this strategy, millions of Russians have been bombarded with images of Bucha’s dead and urged to direct their anger over the murders onto fictional Ukrainian or Western perpetrators, not the Russian soldiers who controlled the city when these civilians were gunned down.

Meanwhile, there are many countries and organizations investigating Russian atrocities at Bucha:
The International Criminal Court, which typically prosecutes only a handful of high-level perpetrators, has opened an investigation into atrocities in Ukraine. Ukrainian prosecutors have launched thousands of criminal investigations, while prosecutors in Poland, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, France, Slovakia, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland have opened investigations of their own. And there have been growing calls to set up a special tribunal to try Russia for the crime of aggression in Ukraine.

Sadly, the Russians keep saying "Atrocities? What atrocities? Go investigate Ukrainian atrocities against Russia. Russia is outraged at the calumnies being spoken against Russia. It is Ukraine you should investigate. Ukraine! Ukraine! Not Russia!"
The Russians keep complaining that all evidence is fake, fake, fake and that nothing can be believed, other than Russia is the victim here, not Ukraine. Aren't the Russians very special people?

Signym, you must have worked in some state bureaucracy or something equally worthless to end up looking at everything like a lawyer would.
There is a fundamental anathema between how design engineers work and how lawyers work. I understand what lawyers do and why it takes them years to finish a case while I only have days to finish my work or else the project fails and the company employees either all die in a fireball/explosion or the business goes bankrupt and the employees are fired. No lawyer has ever done anything of even the least consequence and none of them are under any real time pressure and the low pressure reality the lawyers live in luxury, where nothing is of any importance, where deadlines don't mean somebody ends up dead, certainly shows up in how many people hate lawyers for screwing around and taking forever to make decisions and finish each tiny bureaucratic step. That's why guys like Slobodan Miloševic die of heart disease and smoking during 3 year long trials -- lawyers don't feel the need to hurry -- never have and never will.

The war in Ukraine would end with Putin’s death. Stalin’s death brought peace. According to Svetlana, Stalin had "a difficult and terrible death". It is conjectured that Stalin was murdered; Beria has been suspected of murder, although no firm evidence has ever appeared. Stalin's death was announced on 6 March. The body was embalmed, and then placed on display in Moscow's House of Unions for three days. Crowds were such that a crush killed about 100 people, which shows how even Russian funerals, like Russian wars, can end with massive death because Russkies are homicidal idiots.

“Our ship is not sinking. It’s a special underwater operation!” -- Vladimir Putin
What follows is a tragic story at sea that would raise the righteous anger of a Russian law firm, which would then file for property damage, personal injury, wrongful death, loss of income, and damage to the natural environment. Good luck with trying to collect from Ukraine, which would kill the Russian lawyers if the chance is available. Other than another Russian, who else cares how many Russian lawyers and sailors gloriously die for the Mother Land?
Flagship of Russia's Black Sea fleet reportedly seriously damaged, evacuated
The flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet was heavily damaged and its entire crew evacuated Wednesday, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
Citing the Russian Defense Ministry, TASS reported that “A fire onboard the Mosvka missile cruiser caused a blast of the broadside munitions. The ship received serious damage. The crew was evacuated.”
Russian officials did not offer details as to the cause of the fire, but Ukrainian regional governor Maksym Marchenko said on Telegram that Ukrainian missiles “caused very serious damage to the Russian ship.” There were unconfirmed reports that the cruiser — Russia’s largest warship in the Black Sea — had been struck by Neptune anti-ship missiles fired from Ukraine, and sunk.
The ship carried a crew of more than 500.
The loss of the ship would be another major embarrassment for Russian forces, and a significant tactical military victory and propaganda win for Ukraine.
The Moskva, a Slava-class guided missile cruiser, was involved in the attack on Ukraine’s Snake Island in the early days of the war, where it was one of two ships demanding the surrender of the Ukrainian garrison, who responded: “Russian warship, go f— yourself.”
The Moskva is the second major Russian warship lost in the war so far; in late March, a Ukrainian missile struck the landing ship Orsk in the Azov Sea port of Berdyansk, Ukraine.

As far as Browder is concerned, no matter what other commentators might think, Putin is definitely not crazy.
“My analysis is that he’s acting very rationally based on his own depraved values. He’s been a dictator for 22 years and has stolen hundreds of billions from the Russian state. After a while, that loss creates hardship across the country and there is a very real probability of the people rising up and overthrowing him because they’re hungry and poor,” said Browder. “Putin understands this and saw the writing on the wall for himself. He couldn’t just sit there and wait to be overthrown, so he did what most dictators do when they’re afraid of losing power: He started a war.”

Putin says I’m a Nazi
Why does Russian President Vladimir Putin say I’m a Nazi? That’s easy: I’m a Ukrainian American, born and raised in New York City, who is proud of his heritage and wants his ancestral homeland to be a nice, democratic, liberal country. According to Putin and his comrades, however, all Ukrainians who think of themselves as different from Russians are “Nazis.” Hence, Russian calls to de-Nazify Ukraine are nothing less than calls to destroy everything that makes Ukraine different from Putin’s fascist Russia.
The Kremlin insists it has a right to defend the rights of Russian speakers in the entire world. To be sure, the Russians have a funny way of showing their solicitude: The residents of Mariupol, Ukraine, spoke primarily Russian and their “liberation” entailed their city’s complete destruction.

I used to think that Republicans had different values than Democrats and that explained the conflict between the two. Similarly, that Russians had different values than Americans and that explained the Cold War conflict. But I realized it is Democrats who have whole sets of different values and those explain why different Democrats conflict with each other. Republicans didn’t have values, neither did Russians, but both had a condition of saying NO! to everything. Republicans and Russians are the arteriosclerosis, or the impacted colon, of humanity. They just plug up everything. Republicans and Russians are medical conditions that require strong laxatives to keep the world functioning. Strain at stool is what Republicans and Russians are to the world. See your political gastroenterologist for Republicans; have Ukraine give Russia a huge enema to flush the Russkies out. The world will temporarily feel better, but within months the Republicans and Russians will return to once again plug the bowels of the world.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have become the first European countries to cut off gas imports from Russia, a move that seeks to curtail Russian President Vladimir Putin’s main revenue source.
The three NATO members, all former Soviet republics, have resisted Moscow’s rule since former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin absorbed them during World War II. For years, they have been combating Russian misinformation and efforts to stir up unrest among their Russian-speaking citizens. The war in Ukraine has vindicated their fears.
“For years, they have raised the alarm that Russia is their most existential threat,” wrote NBC News. “Yet, they feel they received little response prior to the invasion of Ukraine.”
Michael Gerson is warning that Putin might invade the Baltics next. Exiled Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, formerly the richest man in Russia, shares that view. Khodorkovsky now believes Putin has no compunctions about waging a war against NATO, starting with the Baltics.

Putin's Defence Minister suffers heart attack 'not from natural causes' amid Ukraine war
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has reportedly suffered a massive heart attack amid the war with Ukraine and foul play is being suspected.
Vladimir Putin's Defence Minister, Sergei Shoigu, who has not been spotted for a few days now, has reportedly suffered a massive heart attack 'not from natural causes'. This comes as reports also claimed that 20 generals have been arrested for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has not been very successful until now.
According to reports, Shoigu, who has been a close ally of Russian President Putin since 2012, has been missing in action for some weeks now.
Russian-Israeli businessman Leonid Nevzlin also made a sensational claim about a major rift between Putin and his closest advisers and military leaders.
Two days before Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, a video of President Vladimir Putin started doing the rounds on social media. In the video, Putin was seen asking Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service chief Sergey Naryshkin to "speak plainly" about his stand on recognition of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent states.
Despite the fact that Naryshkin is counted among his closest aides, Russian President Vladimir Putin did not shy away from publicly embarrassing one of his top-ranking officials.
Another picture going viral on social media shows Putin sitting at a distance from Russia's Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu and others during a meeting.
This led to speculation about differences of opinion between the Russian President and his top officials. Many say Putin did not want any ambiguity on the subject of Ukraine within his inner circle.
Appointed the Minister of Defence in 2012, Sergey Shoigu was at the helm when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. A long-time confidante of Putin, many say Shoigu accompanies the Russian President on hunting trips.
Soon after Russian forces started pouring into Ukraine on February 24, it was Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu who put Russia's "nuclear deterrent forces on high alert" at the direction of President Vladimir Putin.

Libertarian Centrist doesn't mean a damn thing.
You know that people are judged based on the worst things they have done, not on how they behaved on a low-stress, average day, one that doesn't stress test their souls. There are many Americans and Russians that habitually flunk the test whenever one of those high-stress, pressure-filled trial days comes around.
I know hundreds of people who voted for Trump. It is not funny, but before there was a Trump, these hundreds were assholes. Not assholes everyday, because most days are nice and easy, but they failed often enough to separate themselves from normal people. They'd tell you "Trust me" but you couldn't because they would betray your trust if 1) they believed they won't be caught and 2) saw an advantage that made being caught worth taking it. They'd say "Believe me" but they were liars. They are exactly the kind of people that screw up organizations they belong to.
They're good for something, but not for long because there will be more days that test their souls and, once again, they will flunk the test. And as you might expect from grouping themselves into the Republican political party, they believe themselves to be unjustly oppressed and are fighting back. Pro-war Russians also believe themselves to be unjustly oppressed and they, too, are fighting back against the worst imaginable people in the world: Nazis in Ukraine, where most Ukrainians are Nazis in their imagination. And don't forget NATO, which is worse than Nazis according to Pro-war Russians.
I think Trump voters and Russians make it pretty clear they earned oppression if you want the world to prosper. Or maybe they just need a good ass-beating for being lying, thieving scumbags when special and rare circumstances permit them getting away with it, just like Trump (for the Republicans) and Putin (for the pro-War Russians). Trump and Putin have long and sordid histories that should make any decent person refuse to vote for either, but both have tens of millions of fans who are the worst Americans and Russians, as they shall prove to be whenever tested in life.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he has difficulty believing in the reliability of "some countries or some leaders" after the escalation of the war in his country.
CNN's Jake Tapper asked Zelensky during an exclusive interview about whether he finds statements when world leaders use the term "never again," a slogan that is associated with Holocaust and often uttered after crimes against humanity, "hollow" now.
"You lost ancestors in the Holocaust. Every year on Holocaust Remembrance Day, politicians put out statements that say, never again, never again. Those statements must seem really hollow right now to you. When the world says never again, do they ever mean it?" Tapper asked.
Zelensky responded, "I don't believe the world. After we have seen what's going on in Ukraine, we've — I mean that I don't believe some countries or some leaders. We don't believe their words. After the escalation of Russia, we don't believe our neighbors. We don't believe all of this."
The Ukrainian president went on to say that he doesn't even believe in documented security assurances and international law as the war in Ukraine rages, and with Russia accused of alleged war crimes.
"Even I don't believe documents, because we also have a Budapest Memorandum** — I think you know all of the details of this. For me, that is just a piece of paper and costs nothing," Zelensky said
Zelensky told CNN that his faith and his belief lies with practical, tangible efforts and the Ukrainian people.
"We just believe pragmatic things. If you are our friends or partners, give us weapons, give us a hand, give us support, give us money and stop Russia, kick Russia. You can do it if you're a friend," he said.
Zelensky continued, "The only belief is belief in ourselves, in our people, belief in our Armed Forces, and the belief that countries are going to support us not just with their words but with their actions. And that’s it. Never again — Really, everybody is talking about this and yet, as you can see, not everyone has got the guts."

The Russian ambassador is Washington’s least popular man
Anatoly Antonov walks the halls of an increasingly empty embassy.
In an exclusive interview with POLITICO, he admits that Ukraine is a separate country from Russia, with a right to be sovereign, although he’s not sure how long that can or should last. After all, he says, Russia’s goal is much grander than reining in its neighbor. It’s about preventing the domination of the world by any one country.
“It’s a very narrow approach to say the ‘Russian invasion of Ukraine,’” Antonov said. “We are talking about changing the world order that was created by the United States, by NATO countries after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.”
When told that perhaps his current lack of popularity in Washington is due to his unwillingness to acknowledge the realities about what Russia is doing to Ukraine, Antonov refers to the adage: “Every coin has two sides.” In other words, he has his own facts he’d like Americans to consider.
“I am not trying to dissuade you. I would like you to look,” he said, at one point handing over a set of folders thick with op-eds, statements and images promoting Kremlin talking points about the Ukraine crisis. “It’s up to you to decide whether Russian ambassador is providing you with fake news.”
Moscow is not waging an unprovoked war on Ukraine, an independent country with a democratically elected government led by a Jewish man, Antonov said. Instead, he says, Russia is carrying out a “special military operation” to purge Ukraine of Nazis and other bad actors and ensure that the country is not a staging ground for NATO or other outfits that Moscow sees as a threat.
But now, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, why should the world trust Russia?
“You have to decide who we are for you,” Antonov said. “Whether we are partner for you, whether we are rival for you, whether we are opponent, or I don’t want even to use this word, ‘enemy.’”
“As for me, I’m still sure we should be partners,” he adds. “Previously, I would say that we are partners. Now we are not partners. It’s a pity.”

Looks like the last of the Mariupol Azov rightwinger holdouts and their western compatriots are entrenched in the Azov steel plant. So far, Kiev has lost 8 helicopters and a cargo ship trying to evacuate ... somebody ... from the steel plant.
Russians say IIRC that there are about 100 foreign fighters mixed in with the Azov remnants. Well, you can't evacuate 100 people by helicopter, so WHO is so high-ranking that they felt the urgent urgency to evacuate them?
Or possibly WHAT do they have that is so incriminating that it needs to be ferried out? Chemical weapons (aka "novichok")? A dirty bomb?

Remember 2014-15 when G was hyperventilating about Russia "invading" Ukraine, and I kept saying that it wasn't an invasion, it was proxy/hybrid war???
That wasn't an invasion.
THIS is. Now, for reality...
Quote:
Russian and Donbas forces have cleared the city of Mariupol except for the giant metallurgic complex of Azovstal which is held by some estimated 4,000 men, including many from the fascist Azov battalion.
On Sunday Russia opened corridors across the front line and asked for those forces to surrender. However the Zelensky government ordered them to stay and to continue to bind Russian forces which otherwise could be used elsewhere:
Russia had given the Ukrainian fighters in Mariupol until Sunday morning to lay down their weapons or be “eliminated.” On Sunday, the forces at the plant ignored the deadline, and Ukrainian officials vowed that they would not surrender. In response, the Russian assault intensified, with missiles and bombs hitting the city and new attacks occurring near the plant, according to the Ukrainian military.
...
Ukrainian officials said on Sunday that the struggle was not over for Mariupol, which for two months has tied up Russian troops and resources that are badly needed elsewhere.
The Azovstal complex is a 2 by 2 miles industrial area. It can be surrounded and controlled by a relatively small force. Those within the area no longer have heavy artillery ammunition and presumably little other supplies. The Russian forces can see and bomb anything that moves on the open ground and can otherwise sit back and wait their enemies out.
I do not believe that holding on to Azovstal will significantly delay the upcoming second phase of the Russian operation which will surround and destroy the Ukrainian army on the Donbas front.
The Russian military has two huge advantage over the Ukrainian forces in the east. One is of course its air superiority. The other is the unimpeded supply line which allows it to get as much heavy artillery ammunition, fuel and food to its forces as it needs.
Without fuel the Ukrainian army can not move and without constant supply, especially of large amounts of artillery munitions, it can not counter Russian artillery which will be in heavy use against it.
This pictures of a former Ukrainian position show the devastating result of such a situation.
bigger
Nearly all of the Ukrainian ammunition and fuel supplies have been bombed and destroyed. What is trickling in through its western borders has difficulties to reach the eastern front and is anyway not enough to supply an actively fighting and maneuvering army.
On April 16 Russia shot down a Ukrainian military transport plane that was bringing 'western' weapons to Odessa. Today it destroyed another ammunition depot near Lviv were 'western' weapons are crossing the border into Ukraine. Some bits of fuel allegedly still reach the Ukraine through trains from Moldova. But that is far from enough.
Here is a week old report on the fuel situation:
Since the beginning of the war, the number of gas stations in Ukraine has decreased three times, and private fuel consumption has decreased by about the same amount, said Sergey Kuyun, director of the A-95 consulting group.
“According to our estimates, a third of the total number of gas stations is operating, this is about 2.5 thousand stations, before the war there were 7.5 thousand. Of course, the main reason is the lack of fuel. Consumption has also decreased three times compared to the pre-war level,” he said at a closed briefing at the Media Center in Lviv on Monday.
At the same time, Kuyun noted that traders or network owners are forced to provide their most strategic and powerful facilities, located mainly in regional centers or on main routes, while peripheral stations are forced to stand idle, although there are also a lot of consumers there.
According to him, the shortage of fuel became especially aggravated after the shutdown of the Kremenchug Oil Refinery as a resul
