For 2023? It was only beat by The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Miles Morales sequel.

Here's a list of movies by year back to 2020 with a Tuesday BO that came in above Sound of Freedom's Opening Tuesday, along with their production budgets.

2023:
The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($100 Million) [41st Place]
Miles Morales 2 ($100 Million) [48th Place]

2022:
Avatar: The Way of Water ($460 Million) [12th Place / 26th Place]
Minions: The Rise of Gru ($80 Million) [32nd Place]
Top Gun: Maverick ($170 Million) [39th Place]
Jurassic World: Dominion ($165 Million) [50th Place]

2021:
Spider-Man: No Way Home ($200 Million) [5th Place / 17th Place]

2020:
NONE (That's right. Not a single movie in 2020 had a higher Tuesday BO than Sound of Freedom)

Interestingly, 5 of the 8 flicks that had higher grossing Tuesdays than SoF were animated movies. 2 of the 3 that weren't animated were sequels to decades old movies, with the last one, being an IP that's been around most of us for at least half our lives now, using a (highly entertaining) gimmick that can't be used again.

Only 2 of the movies were superhero movies. They were both Spider-Man. And the one movie on this list that wasn't either animated or a sequel to a very old franchise (or both), No Way Home, was a nostalgia piece that cannot be successfully replicated. (See: The Box Office Failure of The Flash, co-starring Michael Keaton's Batman)

The cheapest movie on this list, Minions of Gru, had nearly 6 times the Production Budget, and a hell of a lot of advertising. The most expensive movie on the list, Avatar 2, had over 30 times the Production Budget and an insanely expensive marketing budget, including Super Bowl ads.

Now... Granted... This list isn't adjusted for inflation. However, it is still valuable because it shows the types of movies (ie: High Budget Blockbusters) which dominate, even on a Tuesday.

Because of the inflation factor, there are very few movies that predate 2013 on this list. That's why I find it pretty exceptional that Les Miserbles (2012) also made the list. But when you look at the Production Budget, it was $65 Million, which would be $86 Million today, slightly edging out the budget for Minions: Rise of Gru's $80 Million just last year.

The only two other movies on the list I wouldn't call your typical Blockbusters would be Sing and The Secret Life of Pets, both from 2016. But both of those movies had a $75 Million Production Budget, which would equate to a $95 Million budget in 2023. Django Unchained might possibly not fit your typical Blockbuster mold either, depending on who you're asking. But it did have a $100 Million budget in 2012, which would be $132 Million in 2023.

So with those exceptions out of the way, look at the rest of that list. It's all Sequels, Animated Features, Live-Action Remakes, Reboots, Comic Book Properties or a mixture of these categories. That's what people pay to see. Or at least... that is what people used to pay to see. 2023 hasn't been kind to that type of fare. The safe bets aren't safe anymore...

And that's a good thing.

THIS WEEKEND: Mad Max: Furiosa probably won't. Fury Road made $370 Million in 2015.

JUNE 5TH: The Bad Boys sequel won't... (I only bring this up because Bad Boys For Life was the 2020 Covid Year winner with $426.5 Million worldwide, but this one is not going to make $100 Million more in 2024 than that one did)

JUNE 14TH: Maybe Inside Out 2 will if people are feeling charitable to Disney after their long absence from theaters and there isn't any woke bullshit in it? (The original Inside Out made over $850 Million worldwide in 2015).

JUNE 28TH: A Quiet Place: Day One won't make the Top 3. The highest grossing aQP movie was the first one with $335 Million. The sequel made around $50 Million less than that. This is a prequel without the original cast and the movie poster looks like a BLM protest.

JULY 3RD: Despicable Me 4. The 3rd movie, released in 2017 saw this becoming a Billion Dollar Franchise. This one isn't going to come close to a Billion in 2024, but I have a good feeling about it at least pushing China one slot further down the 2024 Top 100 list.

JULY 12TH: Fly Me to the Moon won't. I don't expect a renaissance of Rom-Coms anytime soon.

JULY 19TH: Twisters. Well I've already predicted very early in the year that this movie won't make the $500 Million it needs to break even. I have no reason to change my mind on that.

JULY 26TH: Deadpool and Wolverine. This one will make the Top 3.

So yeah... from here to the first week of July I see only two possible movies that can make the Top 4/5. And they're both Animated Children's Movies. Despicable Me is the only one I am confident will do this, but Inside Out 2 could do it as well depending on parent's current attitudes toward Disney and their woke agenda. The best thing Disney has going for it is that it hasn't been in the news cycle hardly at all this year because it just hasn't released anything yet.

And we saw how CNN and MSNBC held out until after 5AM to admit that Trump won the race when it was fully clear to everyone that Trump won sometime during the 1AM hour when it was announced by the NYT that Trump won Maine District 2 and Alaska hadn't been counted yet. At that point Pennsylvania was almost finished counting and was listed as "Very Likely Trump".

Very shortly after, Pennsylvania was called for Trump and he was down only by the 3 points he was going to get in Alaska and they just wouldn't call it for Trump. This nonsense went on for HOURS. I joked and said I was going to get a great laugh if they had to admit that Trump won because he flipped Wisconsin before they admit he won Alaska and that was EXACTLY what happened. Even the NYT didn't admit the Trump win until Wisconsin flipped.

I documented all of that in the Election thread as it was playing out. You can see the exact moment that Trump actually won.

This poor guy probably was up until 5 AM thinking she still had a chance.

Nah. Pegasus 2 was done the second that Moana 2 dropped. I just checked right now and Moana 2 is only $1 Million behind it.

YOLO and Successor will be 8th and 9th place after Moana 2 kicks the other two down.

Looking at Wicked, I was probably wrong on that one. The $9 Million it made on Friday was a hard crash from the last Friday, but it does mean that it will probably make at least as much all weekend combined as it did last Friday.

That's a bad fall. -70% and that doesn't include a Preview Thursday, so a straight -70% drop is HUGELY terrible.

But it will still be at least another $20 Million in the states after the weekend is over. That will put it in 13th place for the year, with somewhere in the area of $410-$415 Million worldwide.

I'm fairly confident at this point that Wicked would have enough gas left in the tank to beat both remaining Chinese movies, as it would only need roughly $50 Million more to get there. If this were the end of summer and the kids went back to school, it probably wouldn't make it, but I expect this to be shown in theaters at least until after New Years and Christmas Break could give it the last few bumps it needed to do it. Especially if we're not putting out anything else all year that has a chance of knocking the Chinese movies completely out of the top 10.

And though I haven't heard anybody specifically say it, I assume that this is the type of movie that the real fans of go back to see every weekend. I'm sure the repeat viewings on this one are much higher than your average non-Marvel film, or any film post End Game.

And even if Wicked does beat both Chinese movies, they'd better hope that they can gross at least $400 Million in the sequel plus inflation, because they need $875 Million at least to break even on both of them. And I've also heard my assumptions were right and the marketing budget for Wicked was insane, so all told they probably need to make a solid Billion on this for anybody to walk away thinking this wasn't a waste of time and money.

And at this point, I have to admit that failure on Wicked 2 is what I'm rooting for. Nothing against the movie, but my predictions about movies and the real world have been pretty damn spot on all year long.

I don't believe I ever stated anywhere that I thought Wicked would never cross $400 Million, but I would be lying to you if I said I thought it had a chance, especially after it was clear there was no international interest for it. The only way I redeem myself on this one now is if the 2nd movie is a failure and/or whenever the real numbers finally come out we find out that the 2 movies combined cost a lot more than $350 Million to make.

But I hate leaving things open like that and have no real desire to have any outstanding tick tock threads of my own, so maybe I'll just take the loss on Wicked for now and maybe in a year or two when the sequel comes out it falls on its face and I get a good laugh out of it.

Quiet night around here. So I did look it up since Bruce didn't have it.

Variety said that it was $45 Million and that they expect it to make a profit due to the "modest" budget. To be fair to them, sadly, $45 Million does appear to be pretty modest in 2025, considering we've had 2 horror movies this year that were $50 Million and $90 Million already.

Worldwide Gross is just a few bucks over $46 Million, so unless anything crazy happens like a complete loss of interest by Weekend 2, I concur with their statement.

Unless marketing for this was a low-budget affair, which I honestly wouldn't know because we're 5 months into 2025 and I have yet to see a single commercial, it's probably not going to make all that much in the end, but it shouldn't lose any money for Sony or Columbia Pictures.

As time passes and I don't obsess over these movies any longer, I couldn't say with absolute certainty now, but I can't think of a single example where a movie didn't make money as long as it recouped at least 100% of the production budget worldwide after the first weekend. This one passed that test, even if just by only $1 Million.

It needs $112.5 Million to break even at RoT2.5x. If it doesn't buck the usual trend, it should be sitting somewhere just under $100 Million by the end of next weekend, and it will be making money, likely during or right before the start of Weekend 3. But by weekend 4 we're already looking at Domestic number of maybe $2 or $3 Million tops.

But hey... $30-$40 Million in profit off of a $45 Million investment ain't half bad. If I had a money printing machine where I could nearly double my money, I'd be using it every chance I had.

This is actually a real good example of what the studios need to get back to.

Make 8 of these movies instead of 1 Mission Impossible movie. Not only aren't you wasting all your budget on some high-priced prima-donna that most American's can't stand to look at anymore*, but you'd be putting 8 times as many actual working people to work and/or keeping those people 8 times as gainfully employed than if they were only making the one movie.

Your bonus is if you lose on one or two of them, you aren't betting the farm on them and you can always luck into one or two of those eight movies being a mega-hit that brings in a ton of cash.

Karate Kid took a pretty big 2nd weekend dip there. I figured it would have around $85-$90 Million, but it ended the weekend with only $74.

This one probably still hits breakeven at $125 Million, but that's a bit bigger a hill it still has to climb now before it gets there.

Gotta bring those budgets down. A karate kid movie in 2025 should not cost more than $25 Million, tops.
