Nice, bright day for my walk. Need a couple of things.

Massive storms rolled through Southern Alberta and into Saskatchewan yesterday. Tornado touched down near my dad's hometown of Medicine Hat. Some homes lost but no one was killed thank goodness.

Apparently that bit of news got released before it should have. The actor Doug Henshall said he'll have more to say. Just have to keep my eyes open.

I liked the show because it was unusual in general.

I like Tosh as well but no not her or any of the other characters can carry show.

Cool days would be nice. We've had 2 days below 80 since June 1st, and half of them have been 90 or more. This is extremely rare around these parts. Strangest thing of all is that we don't have drought at the same time. The rain is spread out more than most people's grass appreciates, but we've gotten hit with some big storms that just won't cool anything off after they fall.

At least the energy bill is cheap. I really do feel like an ass for not having A/C in this house for so many years. This is the first year that it's gotten a real test and that single window A/C unit keeps my entire house dry and cool.

I don't even bother using a fan upstairs to try pushing it down anymore. I don't need it. And I don't even bother ever changing the temp on it either. I leave it in ECO mode on 68 degrees and it just shuts on and off when it needs too and it's perfectly comfortable in here no matter how hot and humid it is outside.

And my bill that came in yesterday was still $145 cheaper than my worst winter bill this year was... and winter was pretty uncomfortably cold because of Biden*'s high natural gas prices.

SOMEthing ate my muskmelon seedlings down to the nubs. I have to give up on them this year bc it's too late to replant seeds, I think. I've already harvested nursery zucchini, altho it's not bearing as well as usual. This WOULD be the year I only planted four instead of six!

The okra is FINALLY growing another set of leaves, altho one set got eaten own tothe nubbs. Fortunately I have a pot of healthy spares.

Basil and parsley are going great guns, I've made a few Italian and Thai dishes with the basil already, and chopped parsley is up on the menu this week.

And it be rainin' avocados over here! I'm giving them away to neighbors and friends, but I'm also going to try making and freezing guacamole. I wish I could send some to you guys, they're SOOOO expensive this year! The Haas avocado, tho, has developed a good case of persea mites. Usually I buy and distribute predatory mites in spring, but I was recovering from surgery and then went thru radiation treatment, so I didn't get achance. I was hoping that the weather would cooperate and help the tree escape mites, but the weather has turned warm and humid .... very mite-friendly... so the best I can do at this point is hose off the leaves and hope to knock some of them down and drown them. So that's it for the veggies!

Also, today ... vacuuming. The house is filthy.

My corner of BC is going to be heating up more by the middle of next week. Weather people talking the 30sC which is the 90sF. So warnings are starting to go out about keeping cool and what to do.

Got my laundry done and the new machines work very well. But they do have a glitch already. They are suppose to take $1 coins but don't. It's a good thing that I keep a pile of quarters around for laundry.

My corner of BC is going to be heating up more by the middle of next week. Weather people talking the 30sC which is the 90sF. So warnings are starting to go out about keeping cool and what to do.

Got my laundry done and the new machines work very well. But they do have a glitch already. They are suppose to take $1 coins but don't. It's a good thing that I keep a pile of quarters around for laundry.

At least they still take coins.

I bet it won't be long before they only start taking credit cards or using an app on your phone to pay. I'm sure a lot of them do that already.

Fortunately for you, Brenda, they're probably unlikely to spend a bunch of money on new ones again any time soon, so hopefully you don't have to worry much about that inevitability.

Well, hubby was sleeping in the living room so I couldn't vacuum there, but I did the back half of the house. I have a HEPA canister vacuum with a huge suction and a long wand with an upholstery brush, so when I say I vacuumed, I vacuumed. Crown molding, baseboards, under furniture, along the wall, screens, windowsills, cords on the floor, even furniture.

I'm a lot happier with the back half of the house now! Tomorrow I finish the job.

It's just one more reason I don't go out much anymore.

I see hope in today's youth though, as they turn into adults. I'm seeing a lot of them ditching smartphones and making videos about going back to older tech and how much it has improved their personal lives despite the inconveniences of living without things that a lot of them just grew up with.

I hope it's more than just a blip of a trend. We're kind of losing our humanity here.

Is that unusual for you?
I would imagine you're still recovering from that serious bout of waterborne infection that you had. You have to still rebuild your gut lining and all, and that takes energy.

Plus, you're amazingly productive, inventive and motivated when you're "on" but it seems to me that you can get knocked off track by winter, by setbacks (such as illness or bad weather), and a kind of letdown when you complete a project. That makes it a little hard to tell whether you're suffering from a physical illness or a mental letdown. I do worry that that watermain break might have exposed you to something a little more complicated than bacteria. You said, for example, that the ditch across the street was home to muskrats. It might also be home to any number of waterborne parasites like giardia or cryptosporidia. So, if you can, see if you can differentiate between PHYSICAL lack of energy and just lack of drive. It can be hard because one feels much like the other.

I hope that you recover soon and are feeling better, SIX. But, yanno, you don't have to be monstrously productive all the time. Maybe set yourself a small project that doesn't take too much physical or mental energy, and see how you do with that?

Ah, in my case, it's not an issue of forgetting. I use the stickies in my diary to keep me on track with three times a week/ weekly/ twice a month/ monthly/ quarterly chores, a calendar for all those appointments(!) and I have a ginormous list of "things to do" on a "time available" basis. The problem is, I have way more things to do than I have time or (more importantly) energy. I can only put in so much work before I poop out.

Physically, my gut isn't doing the best right now. Let's just say it's been an uncomfortable few weeks and leave it at that. I did some more barter work for somebody else last week, but I have been very irritable and I derived no pleasure from it. I was looking forward to the weekend so I could finally mow the lawn but it rained 2 days straight. Now that it's sunny and cool outside, I still haven't even been able to drag my ass outside to mow the lawn that desperately needs to be mowed, and to be honest I don't think it's going to happen today.

I feel like all sense of motivation is just gone right now. I usually feel a sense of guilt with that which eventually forces me out of this behavior, but I don't have that right now. I'm bored out of my skull but I still don't want to do anything. Even just vegging and watching YouTube videos is not enjoyable and I don't even have the slightest desire to immerse myself in some mindless video game time.

I've really been in a bad mood for weeks right now. This is out of character for me, even when compared to the normal lulls in my activity. I've hardly even talked on the phone with anybody recently because I really have nothing positive to say about anything at all and I don't want to bring other people down with my debby downer mood.

I dunno. One of these days I'll stop saying that tomorrow is another day and I'll actually get back on the horse.

Hopefully tomorrow.

At least my back tweak from early last week wasn't a really bad one and isn't bothering me anymore right now. Sometimes I can be suffering from those for weeks at a time.

I wish there was some way to communicate offline bc I'd like to follow up in more detail. It does sound more physical than mental, tho, since you're experiencing irritability which is unusual for you. If it tracks back to the watermain incident, I would definitely try a follow up with a doctor. County Hospital and Public Health might be very interested in knowing what you had and where you got it, and if your county hospital is like ours, it's free.

If it goes bak futher than that... well, I would be looking for some sort of exposure to something. For example, if you were working with old CCA-treated wood and breathing a lot of sawdust, you may have been exposed to one of the toxic metals embedded in the wood. Or possibly a chronic nutritional deficiency caught up with you. I don't know, all I can do is guess and wring my hands a bit. I hope you track it down and feel better soon, SIX.

Ah, my issue can be forgetting. I do keep lists in a note book in my back pack and update it, then lists on the fridge for appointments more or less and sometimes I scribble things down on a calendar. Doesn't mean that I can't forget something along the line though.

I slowly started developing these "systems" for lack of a better word when my mum was still alive and I had to keep track of her appointments and such. So, they've just stuck with me.

For me it has to be well into the 90s like 96 and over. It's hit that around here today but I tried to stay in the shade as much as I could when I was walking. But this heat isn't expected to last as long as last year's heat dome. It should start cooling off late tomorrow or by Friday anyways.

I got a couple of chicken thighs for my supper over the next day and paid over $4 CAD. Last time I looked at 4 chicken thighs or even 5 legs it was almost $10 CAD.

Yeah... The messaging here hasn't worked in years.

I'll probably be fine. It's not as if I haven't had mood swings in the past, or like I'm unaccustomed to being irritable. What's not to be irritable in current year if you're not busy keeping yourself busy, right?

I ended up mowing the lawn yesterday after posting here. I wasn't planning on it, but my retiree neighbor got back from vacation with his wife and gave me a wellness check phone call around noon. Nice of him to do, and he wasn't being a dick about the grass or anything, but that was embarrassing enough for me to get out there and spend 3.5 hours mowing it.

I'm about 5 weeks behind on weeds, so I'll probably do that today and get more bug poison down around the perimeter. They haven't been a nuisance or anything, but it's about that time a year for the 2nd bag.

Spent 6 hours pulling weeds and edging the walkway and half of the hasta bed today.

I'll finish the edging and weeding tomorrow and hopefully put down the bug poison.

Better mood today. It's nice doing yard work when its' in the 70's and not miserable outside.

That's excellent weather for outdoor work. Good to read that you're able to roll with punches. That's one good thing about getting older: You've seen it all before, just about. That gives people, it should give people, some equanimity about events, and even about yourself. Yanno, when you're young it's the FIRST TIME for so many things!

I actually like yardwork, when the weather is good. Something about sunshine and breezes lifts my spirit. The weather here is anticipated to top out in the low 80s for the foreseeable future (Well, as accurately as the weather people can predict it, anyw!) so that means that if I get out early enough I can put some time in. In between appointments, that is.

I got a lot of stuff out of the way that was sort of intimidating me. So today was tackling a bunch of little stuff- including digging up appropriately-named "puncture vine". I have a few volunteer plants that are useful: purple lantana, verbena bonariensis, and cherry tomatoes. So when this low-growing plant with dark green, finely divided leaves and cheerful yellow flowers started growing I decided to see what it would turn out like. BIG MISTAKE! It grows spikey balls with spines so sharp it can puncture bicycle tires.

Yeah. I'm finding more enjoyment in yard work these days than I used to. It's not something I enjoy when it needs to be rushed because you have a million other things to do, but when you've got some time to do it and you can just zone out while touching some grass it can be pretty meditative. I think the thing I hate most about it is that it's never ending, unlike a lot of projects are. But boy... when you let it go as bad as I did and then get a bunch of stuff done can the whole neighborhood tell the difference.

I've got to nix my plans for more outdoor work today because of rain. I knew there was a possibility of thunderstorms in the PM today, but I woke up to everything already wet outside and now it looks like showers on and off all day with thunderstorms in the mix.

I REALLY wish I'd gotten around to cleaning up the mess I'd made on the walkway and sidewalks from the ultra-tall mow job and from edging the walkway yesterday though. I didn't think that would be a problem doing it all at once when I was finished today but now it's all rained on and will be a lot harder to clean up.

Glad to hear you've finally got some reasonable weather around you too. Next week is going to be quite a bit warmer than this week, but it doesn't look like it's going to be approaching 100 degrees for us here at least.

Oh... those spiky/sharp ones.... Gotta look out for those.

Last time I was at my grandma's I cut down a lot of stuff outside one day and I was wearing gloves. My aunt mentioned one that was growing in the front yard by the bushes she wanted removed and was probably going to have the old guy they have mow their lawn do it since it was pretty thick. I told her I got it. But I didn't bring my gloves with me just for that and wouldn't you know it... it was super spiky, when none of the overgrowth in the back had been. Got a little surprise at first from it, but then I let my tool do the work and just had to be careful getting it to the can.

They get a fantastic deal on their lawn too, and were super lucky to find this guy, BTW. He's a retired CPA, and he'll mow their lawn and edge it for only $25. It's not a huge lawn, but I was there once when he was doing it and he was working for about an hour and a half. A few years ago he told them that he couldn't take on any more jobs, but last year they asked again and he had the time to fit them in.

I'd love to get to that point myself where the money totally doesn't matter and it's just something to do that I enjoy doing. I've been thinking about mowing lawns and doing all sorts of landscaping stuff myself for some scratch, but I wouldn't edge them too without charging more for it. $25 for a lawn these days alone is a pretty good deal. Especially if you're bringing your own equipment and gas for the job.

You get a built in client base that loves your work and get to use the fact that it's a never ending job to your advantage. It's probably impossible to try to compete with the landscaping companies though. Watching them work is pretty amazing. They park those trucks, open that hatch, ride the mowers out and finish that lawn in 1/10 the time it would take with a push mower while one guy is edging, blow everything off the drive and walkways and wrap it all up so quickly it's like they're a pit crew in a NASCAR race and then they're off to the next one.

It says something about how neat you've kept your yard, and how your neighbors have gotten used to seeing you improving your home and helping them out by cleaning out the street gutters etc, that they notice when you don't, and they care enough to want to do something about it. I guess you're more popular with them than you realized, SIX.

I wonder if they would ever organize a neighborhood cookout? Our neighborhood ... well, a few neighbors, anyway ... used to do that once in a while. Maybe you should exchange phone numbers? I have the phone numbers of all of my immediate neighbors, and the phone numbers of several of my distant-sister's neighbors. That way, if I can't raise her by text or phone they can check in on her. It's kind of a safety feature. They look out for each other and I try to look out for her.

Yeah, pro landscapers do a fast job but they still charge an arm+leg for it. The company charges ...oh, I dunno ... $50-60/hr (judging by LA $) but the crew gets paid $15.

I made roast tri tip, roast potato and (garden) zucchini and (garden) pickled beets last night and, oh my, did the beef come out great again! So NEXT time, I'm just going to roast a whole big tri tip and I won't have to be so exacting about how much roast beef I dish out, and we can have roast beef sandwiches or maybe hash the next day. For some stupid reason, I just never oven-rosted chicken or beef before. I mean, literally never, for the 40+ years I've been the family cook. Pork and turkey and vegetables? Yep! But I was used to spit-grilled chicken and beef on the grill and I don't have a grill.

My first foray was standing rib-eye roast last Xmas which was exceptional but also very expensive and not to be repeated too often! I think if I hadn't tried to roast a tri tip in prep for a stuffed mushroom-flavored hash, I wouldn't have discovered roast beef for years, which led me to oven-roast a chicken as well. So now I have a repertoire of roasts that are easy to make as long as the weather isn't too hot. And roast trip tip is definitely going on the menu! Y'all are welcome to come for dinner!

It's funny you mention the sewers too. I had already cleaned them out twice this year preemptively before rains came down, so if anything the new neighbors who lived in the house of the guy who used to do it all the time before his back failed him didn't even know it was a problem yet.

So I'm wondering who did it over the weekend when I wasn't doing it? Those evil sycamore trees across the street have left their bark everywhere, and when I mowed my lawn I had a ton of them up on my grass on the corner like the old man used to do (which I've mentioned annoyed me to no end until I realized what a service he was doing the entire neighborhood when he silently passed that mantle on to me).

I don't think it was the new neighbors who did it since I noticed that they had a bunch up on their curb too. I'm thinking that the guy who called me was the one who did it this time. I don't think there's any chance the hillbillies further down the road who saw me do it a couple of times would have bothered.

I've exchanged numbers with a few of my neighbors. I really miss the retired couple across the street, but the new neighbors seem pretty great so far and keep up the lawn real nice. Young couple with kids.

When I first moved in they had some block parties, but even though I was invited I never attended. I probably would now if they had them, but it's been years. It's not like I'm super outgoing these days... I still like to keep most people at arm's length. But especially in these times it's not a bad idea to have a stronger sense of community.

Yeah. I'd have no desire to work for somebody else's company. I'd probably rather do a per-job cost model too, rather than an hourly thing. I don't like being rushed and I do a good job at whatever I do. The days of breaking my back to make anybody else rich are over. I have no desire to be rich, but I think having a little more structure and responsibility that I impose on myself doing something I enjoy doing could be a good thing for me.

Edged the sidewalks and curbs. Trimmed my one bush. Edged the hasta bed borders. Used a weed wacker for the edging today. Have to use a legit edger or my sawzall on the walkway and hasta beds first if I don't keep up with them because of dirt encroaching on the concrete.

Blew everything in a pile and trashed it, then I mowed the front lawn for the 2nd time in 3 days. It needed it with all the rain we've had in the last day and a half and with my last cut on the highest setting because I let it get way too long.

Looks like a million bucks right now.

I'm wrecked.

You don't get logged out all the time? Huh... This site auto logs me out a lot of the time, at random. Sometimes I'm logged in and I make a post and it tells me that I'm not logged in. I've just chalked it up to one of the many quirks here.

Out for my walk soon. Air advisory out now for bad air quality with all this heat. Ocean breezes can't do their job of clearing out the gunk.

Nope. It just happens every so often and it leaves me wondering for a bit then I log back in and whatever.

I tend to get logged out on one device at about 9AM-ish most days, my other device tends to stay logged in most of the time.

Well, I was out for a good long while today hiding from the heat. Spent part of the day in the local mall, library and about an hour at my local senior's centre. Then came home around 3pm. Did dishes and sat down until supper time.

It's been "cool" here this week, but except for when the clouds were out yesterday it never actually felt cool because of the humidity.

Hot again next week though. I think I saw Wednesday and Thursday would be mid 90's again with a real feel closer to 110 degrees.

The crazy thing is, it's been cooler here than where either of you live. More humid than usual, tho.

The sad thing is, I've been too tired to make good use of the moderate weather!

And besides... unlike me and Brenda, you don't have 4 to 6 months where it's so cold that everything is dead outside.

I pulled weeds for another 6 hours yesterday and finally got everything clean and then mowed the back yard. Trash pickup was on Thursday and I already have two huge cans nearly full of weeds and grass again, with just enough room for a bag or two of trash leftover. So... 4 huge cans of lawn/weed debris in 4 days this week. Wowzers...

Going to clean up inside my house and get it perfect today. I *think* my aunt and grandma are coming over tomorrow. It's not going to be cool, but it won't be unbearably hot either and I haven't' had them over since the end of April. I've got a LOT to show off since the last time they were here.

Depending on how busy I am next week, I might see if my old man wants to come over before the perfect yard gets un-perfect again. He still hasn't seen my finished shelves or all the new electric in the garage or the pantry drawers.

Yup, that is what the weather people are saying. It is. But this stretch is nothing compared to last year which last a couple of weeks and we hit triple digits in lots of places in BC including down where I am.

My area is expecting rain on Tuesday but up in the Interior they will have to watch for lighting as well as the rain.

Well, I was running around like a crazy woman today bc I had this strange mis-impression that today was Sunday. And that I needed to get everything out for trash and recycling like RIGHT NOW. So I cut up a lot of boxes and sorted out a lot of recycling and hubby cut up an old foam mattress for disposal. Whew! And then when I was agitating to get the bins I got a funny look and the comment "You DO know that today's Saturday not Sunday, right?"

Also getting a bunch of stuff ready for donation. Baby steps towards decluttering but steps forward nonetheless. Plus, I found something that hubby has been harping about fir months now. So, there's that!

Well, at least I'm a day ahead of schedule!

Er, no. I had my lazy Thursday and Friday so what that means is that I have one more day to get stuff done before misc appts (lawyers, doctors). I'm glad to have some "found time" bc I really want to get things squared away. Also, now the house not only is considerably cleaner since I went on a vacuuming binge, it looks a lot tidier. even more when the donation items go out.

Hey, another thought SIX: You seem to be good with wood. Have you ever thought pf furnitur repair? Not particle board and plywood furniture bc it can't be repaired anyway, but say somebody has a nice piece of wooden furniture they want to get fixed....

Showers can really cool people down. When we have heat emergencies one of the things they NEVER recommend is taking a shower and/or putting on a damp Tshirt. I don't know why not because that really works for me.

Maybe if you take a shower before bed and direct a fan at your bed you'll sleep better?

It's what my Mom and Step-Dad did for 25 years. The things I could have learned and the skills I could have had. I probably would have owned that shop now instead of watching my Step-Dad sell it to an employee along with the quarter of a century name they'd built up for a song when they moved.

Bummer.

I'm thinking that I'd like to actually BUILD furniture though. There's always a market for that with high-end clients, and the internet would facilitate it. I've been watching TONS of woodworking videos recently. One guy even makes sets of 6 drink coasters out of scrap 4x4s and his wife sells the sets on ETSY for $35 a piece. Making one of those sets at a time for $35 wouldn't be very economical, but making 50 of them at once could be.

Now that I've got a workshop I'd have to start getting some better tools for that though. I've got two awesome table saws and a jigsaw, but my miter saw is kind of old and cruddy. I've got a really nice router, but no table for it and a very limited selection of bits (which are quite expensive if you want good ones). My clamps are good enough for projects around my house, but if I ever want to get serious about this I need some serious metal ones like my step-dad sold along with the business. He probably had $5,000 worth of them on the wall.

But you don't need all of that for coasters.

Another lazy Sunday here. Grams and Aunt weren't feeling up to coming out and it was already pretty uncomfortably hot and humid outside a few hours before they would have been here anyway. I'd like for them to come when it cools down and we can chill on the front porch instead of being cooped up with the A/C.

Did a little cleaning, but still got a long way to go. The old man is coming by this week though, so it will get done soon.

I did manage to install my 2nd extension cord holder up in my garage pretty late at night, so that minor project is out of the way. I also cut and put down one of the sheets of contact paper on one of my pantry drawer shelves. Got everything I need in the basement ready for the other one so I'll make quick work of that tomorrow morning and finally be able to check the pantry off of my to-do list.
