KRA2PO: Another bad take. As you point out, in 2010, 49% of Ukrainians voted in a pro-Russian president. But in the 2019 elections only 16% of Ukrainians voted for pro-Russian candidates.
You carefully massage your messages to mean the opposite of what happened. Now I happen to remember that election, and one of the things that Zelenskiy ran AND WON ON was that he was Russian-speaking from central Ukraine, and promised peace and unity with Russian-speaking Ukraine. Even wikipedia... wikipedia, for god's sake, the notoriously pro-establishment "open source" website, knows about it

He has positioned himself as an anti-establishment and anti-corruption figure. As president, Zelenskyy has been a proponent of e-government and of unity between the Ukrainian and Russian speaking parts of the country's population... During his presidential campaign, Zelenskyy promised to end Ukraine's protracted conflict with Russia, and he has attempted to engage in dialogue with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
He also promised a strong anti-corruption, populist program, but like most politicians he promised one agenda and delivered another.

Yeah, if you only poll Ukrainians on the Kiev side of the front ... which is what happened... and skew your polling to focus on people who agree with you, especially since Kiev has canceled all political opposition and has the state security apparatus to back that up, you will get the most skewed of skewed polls.

Tsk tsk
“Our goal is not to spin the flywheel of military conflict, but, on the contrary, to end this war,” Putin told reporters in Moscow, after attending a State Council meeting on youth policy.
Putin’s critics say that using the word “war” to describe the Ukraine conflict has effectively been illegal in Russia since March, when the Russian leader signed a censorship law that makes it a crime.
Nikita Yuferev, a municipal lawmaker from St. Petersburg who fled Russia due to his antiwar stance, on Thursday said he had asked Russian authorities to prosecute Putin for “spreading fake information about the army.”
“There was no decree to end the special military operation, no war was declared,” Yuferev wrote on Twitter. “Several thousand people have already been condemned for such words about the war.”
A US official told CNN their initial assessment was that Putin’s remark was not intentional and likely a slip of the tongue. However, officials will be watching closely to see what figures inside the Kremlin say about it in the coming days.

North Korea has delivered arms to Russia's private military group Wagner
The group, which is independent of the Russian defense establishment and is leading a bloody siege of Bakhmut, Ukraine, is spending more than $100 million each month on its Ukraine operations.
Wagner is emerging as a rival power center to the Russian military and other Russian ministries.
The mercenary-like army has been carrying out operations — ostensibly private but implicitly approved by the Kremlin — in Syria, Libya, Sudan, the Central African Republic and other countries in Africa.
In Ukraine, the group has served as an elite special forces-type operation that has better training, equipment and supplies than the mainstream Russian military.

February 3, 2022 - The Reason Putin Would Risk War
He is threatening to invade Ukraine because he wants democracy to fail — and not just in that country.
Why would Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, attack a neighboring country that has not provoked him? Why would he risk the blood of his own soldiers? Why would he risk sanctions, and perhaps an economic crisis, as a result? Why is he playing this elaborate game?
Ukraine has extraordinary significance to Putin. Ukraine matters because it has tried — struggled, really — to join the world of prosperous Western democracies. Ukraine has staged not one but two pro-democracy, anti-oligarchy, anti-corruption revolutions in the past two decades. The most recent, in 2014, was particularly terrifying for the Kremlin. Young Ukrainians were chanting anti-corruption slogans, just like the Russian opposition does, and waving European Union flags. These protesters were inspired by the same ideals that Putin hates at home and seeks to overturn abroad. After Ukraine’s profoundly corrupt, pro-Russian president fled the country in February 2014, Ukrainian television began showing pictures of his palace, complete with gold taps, fountains, and statues in the yard — exactly the kind of palace Putin inhabits in Russia. Indeed, we know he inhabits such a palace because one of the videos produced by Navalny has already shown us pictures of it, along with its private ice-hockey rink and its hookah bar.
Putin’s subsequent invasion of Crimea punished Ukrainians for trying to escape from the kleptocratic system that he wanted them to live in — and it showed Putin’s own subjects that they too would pay a high cost for democratic revolution.
To explain why requires some history, but not the semi-mythological, faux-medieval history Putin has used in the past to declare that Ukraine is not a country, or that its existence is an accident, or that its sense of nationhood is not real. Nor do we need to know that much about the more recent history of Ukraine or its 70 years as a Soviet republic—though it is true that the Soviet ties of the Russian president, most notably his years spent as a KGB officer, matter a great deal. Indeed, many of his tactics—the use of sham Russian-backed “separatists” to carry out his war in eastern Ukraine, the creation of a puppet government in Crimea—are old KGB tactics, familiar from the Soviet past. Fake political groupings played a role in the KGB’s domination of Central Europe after World War II; sham separatists played a role in the Bolshevik conquest of Ukraine itself in 1918.

Republicans need to figure out mail-in voting
It’s being used by Democrats to influence the course of elections

I raised the idea of outlawing mail-in voting with a canny friend. “The Dems would never allow it,” he said, comparing the practice to nuclear weapons. Once they exist, it is impossible to get rid of them. Maybe so, in which case it behooves Republicans to become experts in organizing and deploying mail-in voting for their own candidates.
If nothing else, a little competition in the mail-in ballot sweepstakes would counter the invitation to corruption that follows on the feeling that the fix is in. In the election just past, it seemed, despite media forecasts of a red wave, that a certain complacency was abroad in and about the headquarters of certain contentious races. Gretchen Whitmer never seemed particularly worried about Tudor Dixon, nor did John Fetterman seem worried about Dr. Oz. Of course, Fetterman is a special case. But the point is, I believe, they knew that the fix was in and therefore — to employ another common idiom — that the race was in the bag.
Let me break that down for you...
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. ~Bugs Bunny
If they want to cheat, let 'em cheat. We're going to cheat better, and we're going to end up taking all the Democrat strongholds away from them co-opting the platform that they championed to allow widespread cheating and never let them cheat better than we will cheat.
We don't allow the cheating in Indiana, but I just might stay overnight at my Grandma's for a few weeks in 2024 and go door to door collecting thousands of ballots from people who would have otherwise been too lazy to vote. That's how they win. We can do it better. And it will all be legal because they made it legal.

I'm just paraphrasing the articles as they're being written by Republicans now.
Where up until the last election they were trying to fight these new covid induced cheat codes to the election, they've now decided to embrace them.
It worked for DeSantis. Florida elections are far from secure, but DeSantis blew Democrats out of the water even in Miami-Dade. It also worked in a fair amount of districts in New York and California and that's the only reason that Republicans took back the house.
Now that they know it works and they have plenty of data to pour over in those three states, just watch what happens when they draw up the plans to cheat in all the other Blue and Purple states where Democrats opened up this level of cheating and they take some of their campaign money out of advertising and instead use it to canvass neighborhoods and stuff ballot boxes the way that Democrats have been since 2020.
I'll state once again... I do not like the idea of Republicans harnessing this power either. That door should never have been opened for them by people with no foresight who were just looking for some immediate short-term wins.
And because Democrats still can't see it and will refuse to close up the cheating apperatus they set up post-Covid before their House majority ends, it will never be closed back up and this will be the new normal in our elections going forward. Once Republicans crush it, they're never going to close it up either.

He should have pocketed his gains (Crimea) and cut his losses (the rest of Ukraine) back in 2014. Or failing that, he shouldn't have drank his own Kool-Aid, as you Americans say, about his invading troops being greeted as liberators. But he did, and here we are. He's blown it, and the only question is how much more suffering he can inflict on Ukrainians and Russians in his losing cause. Yes. But using the cheating apparatus that Democrats set up for them to exploit post-Covid in 2020.
I am serious. I don't want to see them do it, but in case you missed it with the media that you regularly consume, that's exactly what they seem to be embracing now instead of their previous claims that they want to close those loopholes. (As much as I dump on the terrible line-up of Democrats we've had in the last decade or so, I still hate Republicans, FYI).
This will not be good for any of us. I imagine the next step would be simply voting via smartphone as if we were watching American Idol. Elections would be meaningless by that point.

Maybe. Maybe not. I'm not defecting from Trump to "Trump Lite" with DeSantis though. I like what DeSantis did in his state during Covid, but his foreign policy statements lead me to believe he might be anther Bushite NeoCon in sheeps clothing. And our current leaders from both parties seem to want to drive us into what might end up being the largest war in the lives of anybody living under 80 years old.
There's a LONG time until election day. It's impossible to even make any predictions that mean anything for the next 1 1/2 years. Anybody claiming to do so in the media is just doing the regular old click-baity thing they need to do to survive. Especially in this economy.

What If the U.S. Hadn’t Helped Ukraine?
Ukrainian resistance and American support prevented a wide range of horrors.
By Anne Applebaum
December 22, 2022, 8:35 AM ET
On the shortest day of the year, after 10 months of war, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, finally left his country and came to Washington to thank Americans for their support. He went to the White House, where he appeared at a press conference. He went to Congress, where he handed a Ukrainian flag, signed by the defenders of Bakhmut, to the vice president and House speaker. He congratulated all of us on our first, joint American-Ukrainian victory: “We defeated Russia in the battle for minds of the world.”
Nothing about this trip—not the applause, not the flag, not the speech—was inevitable. Zelensky’s very survival was not inevitable. Ukraine’s continued existence as a sovereign state was not inevitable either. Back in February, many considered these things to be improbable.
On the eve of the invasion, some American experts advised against offering military aid to Ukraine, on the grounds that the war was going to be over too quickly. Other Americans repeated Russian propaganda, questioning whether Ukraine deserved to exist or whether it deserved to be defended. Some American politicians echoed those views and indeed continue to do so. What if they had prevailed? What if a different president had been in the White House? What if a different president had been elected in Ukraine? Let’s imagine, just for a moment, a world without Ukrainian courage, or American and European weapons, or the unity and support of democracies around the world.
Had the Russian plan been carried out as it was written, Kyiv would have been conquered in just a few days. Zelensky, his wife, and his children would have been murdered by one of the hit squads that roamed the capital city. The Ukrainian state would have been taken over by the collaborators who had already chosen their Kyiv apartments. Then, city by city, region by region, the Russian army would have fought the remnants of the Ukrainian army until it finally conquered the entire country. Originally, the Russian general staff imagined that this victory would require six weeks.
Had all of that happened as planned, Ukraine would now be pockmarked with the concentration camps, torture chambers, and makeshift prisons that have been discovered in Bucha, Izyum, Kherson, and all the other territories temporarily occupied by Russia and liberated by the Ukrainian army. A generation of Ukrainian writers, artists, politicians, journalists, and civic leaders would already be buried in mass graves. Ukrainian books would have been removed from schools and libraries. The Ukrainian language would have been suppressed in all public spaces. Hundreds of thousands more Ukrainian children would have been kidnapped and transported to Russia or trafficked farther around the world.
Russian soldiers, strengthened by their stunning victory, would already be on the borders of Poland, setting up new command posts, digging new trenches. NATO would be in chaos; the entire alliance would be forced to spend billions to prepare for the inevitable invasion of Warsaw, Vilnius, or Berlin. Millions of Ukrainian refugees would be living in camps all across Europe, with no prospect of ever returning home; the tide of sympathy that originally greeted them would have ebbed long ago, the money would be running out, the backlash under way. The Moldovan economy would have collapsed entirely; a pro-Russian government in Moldova would perhaps already be planning to incorporate that country into the emerging Russian-Belarusian-Ukrainian federation that one Russian propagandist hailed, too early, on February 26.
This disaster would not have been confined to Europe. On the other side of the world, Chinese plans to invade Taiwan would be well under way, because Beijing would assume that an America unwilling to defend a European ally, and now totally bogged down in a long-term battle against an emboldened Russia, would

For the heroism of its people, and for standing up to a bully
Picking The Economist’s country of the year is hard in normal times. Our writers and editors usually begin with a freewheeling debate in which they spar over the rival claims of half a dozen shortlisted nations. But this year, for the first time since we started naming countries of the year in 2013, the choice is obvious. It can only be Ukraine.
The honour normally goes to the country which, in our view, has improved the most in the previous 12 months. So Ukraine is in one sense an unusual choice, in that life for most Ukrainians has grown spectacularly worse since Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion of their country in February. Multitudes have died. Cities have been smashed and charred. Millions have fled their homes. Ukraine’s economy has shrunk by about a third. Because of Russian attacks, many Ukrainians are shivering in the dark without electricity.
Yet Ukrainians have proved themselves this year. Four of their qualities stand out. The first is heroism. When the invasion began, most people thought Ukraine would be crushed by its much larger neighbour. Many would have understood if Ukraine’s defenders had run away. Mr Putin clearly expected the Ukrainian army to fold: his troops arrived with their dress uniforms ready for a victory parade but without nearly enough food.
The Ukrainians stood and fought. President Volodymyr Zelensky, spurning Western offers to spirit him out of Kyiv, supposedly snapped that he needed “ammunition, not a ride”. Ordinary Ukrainians showed similar mettle. Professors, plumbers and pop stars flocked to enlist, swapping comfortable beds for frosty foxholes and the risk of agonising death. In battle after battle they routed the Russians. In defending themselves against an aggressor who disputed their country’s right to exist as an independent state, they found a new sense of nationhood.
They showed ingenuity, too. They spotted their enemies’ weaknesses, blew up their fuel and ammunition supplies, and quickly learned how to use new Western-supplied weapons. They devolved decision-making to officers in the field, making their units more nimble and adaptable than the plodding, hierarchical Russians. They made deft use of help from friendly intelligence services, especially America’s, while their enemies fought half-blind, and sometimes gave away their own positions by making phone calls on open lines.
Ukrainians have also demonstrated resilience. When there is no tap water at home, they melt snow. When there is no electricity, they find heat and light in cafés with diesel generators, or sleep in the offices where they work, many of which now have bomb shelters and bottled water. The horrors Mr Putin keeps inflicting on them do not seem to have dented their morale.
And with a few exceptions, they have not answered war crimes with war crimes. Russian forces have routinely bombed civilians, tortured captives and plundered villages. By contrast, Russians are startled at how well they are treated as prisoners of war. This is largely because Ukraine is a democracy where human lives matter. It has its flaws, notably corruption, but its government and people had rejected Putinism even before the war, and now they reject it more strenuously.
By standing up to Russia’s despot, Ukrainians have protected their neighbours. Had he conquered Ukraine, he might have attacked Moldova or Georgia next, or menaced the Baltic states. Ukraine has shown that underdogs can stand up to bullies, even enormous ones. Underdog heroes and heroines do not merely surmount obstacles or defeat adversaries. The best and most moving beat a whole rotten system. They hold out hope that might — or reputation, power and influence — will not always prevail; that even if the rules are rigged, the game can still be won. They suggest life is not predetermined. They make their own fate.
It has thus been an inspiration not only to places with predatory neighbours, such as Taiwan, but also to oppressed people every

In 2021, some of the contestants for “country of the year” were:
Moldova, one of the poorest countries in Europe. It had long been a sink of Russian money-laundering. But in late 2020 it elected the graft-busting Maia Sandu as president and in 2021 it gave her party control of parliament.
Zambia reclaimed its democracy in 2021. In August its rulers tried to rig an election, but Zambians voted for Hakainde Hichilema, a liberal businessman, by such a wide margin that the rigging failed.
Lithuania stood up to authoritarian regimes in 2021. It gave sanctuary to dissidents from next-door Belarus and Russia, including the woman who probably won Belarus’s most recent election, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. The despot who stole that poll, Alexander Lukashenko -- who was visited by Putin 6 days ago -- tried to take revenge by forcing crowds of refugees across the Lithuanian border. Similarly, China is determined to bully Lithuania into submission. A Chinese newspaper mocked its size, likening it with great originality to “a mouse, or even a flea” because it defied the government in Beijing by letting Taiwan open a representative office in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital.

They've now gotten $113 Billion in gifts from US Taxpayers in 2022 alone. And this last $45 Billion gift comes at the cost of 19 Million Americans losing Medicaid in April of 2023.
It would be like giving Rookie of the Year status to a guy who was shot up with horse steroids all year by his coach while the media turned a blind eye to that and the corked bat that Sammy Sosa gave him, all while the stadium they played in crumbled around them and they couldn't afford to repair it because his salary ate up all the revenue.

Democrats own this one. They had the power. They didn't need to open the doors for any states to cut people off of Medicaid in April of next year, but every single one of them voted for that this week.
19 Million American's will be thrown off of Medicaid in order to fund over $900 BILLION in military spending, including the $45 Billion going to Ukraine that alone could end world hunger for an entire year.
Merry Christmas, America!

Some Orthodox Ukrainians decided to observe the festival celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25 like members of Western Christian churches.
In October, the leadership of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which is not aligned with the Russian church and is one of the two branches of Orthodox Christianity in the country, agreed to allow the faithful to celebrate on December 25.
“What began on February 24, the full-scale invasion, is an awakening and an understanding that we can no longer be part of the Russian world,” Olena Paliy, a 33-year-old resident of Bobrytsia near Kyiv, told AP.
President Vladimir Putin says Russia’s offensive in Ukraine is being carried out to “unite the Russian people”. Putin used the concept of “historical Russia” to argue in an interview to be aired on Sunday that Ukrainians and Russians are one people. Russia’s “geopolitical opponents were aiming to tear apart Russia, the historical Russia”, Putin said in excerpts from a broadcast for Rossiya 1 national television.
“Divide and conquer, that’s what they have always sought to accomplish and are still seeking to do,” Putin said.

Russian-born historian Sergey Radchenko wrote about what Putin will do next: We need to steel ourselves for a painful struggle that may take years before it is resolved in one way or another. When Putin sees the world through our eyes, does he see unflinching conviction and a willingness to go to the brink? He probably doesn’t. That contributes to his confidence. A year on, there is light at the end of the tunnel. It’s Putin burning down his off-ramp as he prepares for a long, long war.
https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/what-will-putin-do-next/
Sergey Radchenko tweeted: “Russia is being turned into a garrison state, where people live short, nasty, brutish lives, and where all reality ultimately resolves itself into misery, tyranny and war.”
https://twitter.com/DrRadchenko/status/1605572912127176704
What will Putin do next? Sergey Radchenko puts himself in Putin’s position to predict his final move:
Russia is a nuclear power, and so I can’t lose. Would Hitler have used all the means at his disposal if he could avert Germany’s defeat? Yes, he would. That’s my premise, too. I will push forward, until I have no options left. With God’s help, I will win, but if I don’t, I am not averse to dying in glory. We all must die someday. Why not today? Why not in the service of the Great Russian Idea? That is what they don’t understand. They think I will flinch when faced with the choice: defeat (and my humiliation, and even ouster) or the end of civilisation. Had the end of civilisation ever looked more attractive?
But civilisation does not have to end – not at all. There is a long way to go from irradiated Ukraine to a global nuclear cataclysm. They – the Americans – will have to make the choice to escalate. Will they? I doubt it. They know that I know that in the big scheme of things, Ukraine is a sideshow. For them, that is. Not for me. For me it’s a matter of life and death. For now, I will keep the nuclear card in reserve. Some say it’s just an empty threat. Maybe it is and maybe it isn’t. Let’s find out when it comes to it.

Let’s be clear ok. The Democrats had a history making mid-term election. Trump has legal problems too numerous to list. The House Republicans can’t get their act together enough to elect a House Majority leader. And if they do, not only will he not have the power to get anything done. He’s going to be led around by the nose by the Republican looneys. That is going to be very entertaining and helpful to the Democrats in 2024.
Now, Biden wins again. He is signing a just passed 1.7 trillion-dollar Federal spending bill. A bill the house Republicans threatened the Senate Republicans not to pass. It includes 45 billion in aid to Ukraine and our NATO allies. 777.2 billion in nondefense discretionary spending. 858 billion in defense spending.
It includes The Electoral Count Reform Act. $47.5 billion for the National Institutes of Health, $9.2 billion for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and $950 million for the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. It has a $13.4 billion increase for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It has a boost of $28.5 billion for child nutrition programs.
New Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers they say would support over 11,000 additional low-income households, as well as a boost to maximum Pell Grant award.
Eight amendments adopted include proposals aimed at allowing proceeds from assets seized from sanctioned Russian oligarchs to be put toward Ukraine aid . Plus a measure aimed at strengthening protections for breastfeeding workers and another dealing with compensation for 9/11 victims.
Biden just keeps winning guys, so again I say let’s be clear. All the news is, has been, and is going to continue to be, happy news for me, not so much for you.

In contrast to National priorities, groceries are a very local problem and so is health care. If your state legislature and next-door neighbors don't care whether you die, too bad for you. Move to where people care. Citizens of Trumptard-controlled states should look to their Trumptard legislature and governor for food and medicine. If your Trumptard government won't do what you want, vote them out of office because Congressional Democrats from rich California feel no legal or moral obligation to pay for angry poor white trash Trumptards' healthcare and food in Indiana, especially after Trumptards piss on California.

19 Million American's will be thrown off of Medicaid in order to fund over $900 BILLION in military spending, including the $45 Billion going to Ukraine that alone could end world hunger for an entire year.

Do you remember the ORIGINAL issue that the neocons used to wedge Ukrainian society apart and depose a democratically elected President?
A trade deal! With the EU! When Ukraine should have been focusing on the corruption which was draining their economy and distorting their society, western NGOs (funded in large part by the USA) hammered on this "trade deal")
Russia and Yanukovich were willing to negotiate a three-way deal between the EU and the EEAU, but the EU, propelled by "fuck the EU" Nuland, refused to negotiate.
The EU and USA-funded NGOs (AID, NED, etc) turned trade into a "civilizational choice between west and east". By constantly hammering on it, polarizing people and setting up snipers...BTW Yanukovich had agreed to all the protest demands including early elections before being violently deposed... the USA set Ukraine up for a civil war at best, and a war with Russia (which was our real intent) at worst.
And who the fuck gets anything out of ginning up this war except neocons and their lobbyists, corrupt Ukrainian oligarchs and the military industrial complex?
100,000 dead Ukrainian soldiers. Billions of American taxpayer dollars pumped into the pockets of corrupt politicians and oligarchs.
Yeah, Merry FUCKING Christmas to us.

Second didn't even know Ukraine was a country until February of this year.
Yeah. I knew what was going on and I remember.
The only reason Ukranians didn't fold in two weeks this year is because the $100 BILLION plus we've given them, only to see weapons systems we've gifted them turn up in the Middle East and Africa this year.
All Ukraine is, is the biggest money laundering scam the NeoCons/MIC/Democrats have ever inflicted upon our country and the world.
Fuck Ukraine. Fuck Joe Biden*. Fuck NeoCons. Fuck the War Machine. Fuck Democrats. And Fuck Second and Ted and all of their soy fueled pussy coward facsimiles out there for being so stupid and gargling the balls of the fucking Bushite NeoCon monsters they used to pretend to be against 20 years ago.

BTW, that is the standard "color revolution" scenario that the American CIA and State Department (and affiliated NGOs) use to destabilize governments that they don't like: Set up "NGOs" under the guise of "human rights" (the old wording), or "promoting freedom/democracy" or, most recently, promoting "diversity".
Identify a significant ethnic, racial, religious, or tribal divisions. Identify wedge issues: language, economic inequity, ethnic identity, political representation, headscarves... whatever, it doesn't have to be important .... and hammer on it, funding groups willing to get riled about whatever. Manipulate politicians, incite riots, and invite government reaction/ repression to polarize the situation further.
Seen it done in Syria, Libya, Iran, Thailand, (the former) Yugoslavia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Ukraine, Georgia, etc etc. If successful, pick and prop up an alternate leader.
That's how the world got Juan "Random Guy" Guaido and Voldemort Zelensky.

The entire world is pleased that Russia, not EU, not US, not NATO, will decide who wins (Maybe)
Russia's Lavrov: Either Ukraine fulfills Moscow's proposals or our army will decide
By Ronald Popeski and Lidia Kelly
Dec 27 (Reuters) - Moscow's proposals for settlement in Ukraine are well known to Kyiv and either Ukraine fulfills them for their own good or the Russian army will decide the issue, TASS agency quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying.
"Our proposals for the demilitarization and denazification of the territories controlled by the regime, the elimination of threats to Russia's security emanating from there, including our new lands, are well known to the enemy," the state news agency quoted Lavrov as saying late on Monday.
"The point is simple: Fulfill them for your own good. Otherwise, the issue will be decided by the Russian army."
Moscow has been calling its invasion in Ukraine a "special military operation" to "demilitarise" and "denazify" its neighbour. Kyiv and its Western allies call it an imperial-style aggression to grab land.
In September, Moscow proclaimed it had annexed four provinces of Ukraine - Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson - after holding so-called referendums that were rejected as bogus and illegal by Kyiv and its allies.
On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow was open to negotiations and blamed Kyiv and its Western backers for a lack of talks, a stance Washington has previously dismissed as posturing amid persistent Russian attacks.
Lavrov told TASS that when it comes to how long the conflict will last, "the ball is in the regime's court and Washington behind it."
There is no end in sight to the war, which has entered its 11th month and which has killed thousands, displaced millions and turned cities into rubble.
Kyiv has ruled out conceding any land to Russia in return for peace, and publicly demands Russia relinquish all territory. Moscow has insisted it is pursing "demilitarisation" and "denazification" but in reality its aims have not been fully defined.

Signym was an absurdity in 2013 as Signym continues to be, as Russians continue to be:
It is unbearable to read, but necessary to face: “Russian troops raped and tortured children in Ukraine, U.N. panel says.” (Article here. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/russian-troops-raped-tortured-child
ren-ukraine-un-panel-says-rcna49168 ) Is it any wonder that Ukrainians want to repel this evil invasion? And that they don’t want to leave any of their people to the mercy of such invaders and occupiers?
Every day, Russian propagandists call the Ukrainians “Nazis.” So do their echoers in the West. This is what psychologists call, I believe, “projection.”
• Also unbearable to read — unbearable to watch — but necessary to face: “Caught on Camera, Traced by Phone: The Russian Military Unit That Killed Dozens in Bucha” (here https://www.nytimes.com/video/world/europe/100000008299178/ukraine-buc
ha-russia-massacre-video.html?smid=url-share ). There is no denying the nature of Russian forces in Ukraine — except to the extent that there are always people who deny war crimes and crimes against humanity, from the Holocaust to individual massacres.
• Earlier this year, some 1,200 people gathered in the Mariupol theater, to take refuge from Russian bombing. These included children, of course. A large sign indicating children was “daubed in Russian in front of the theatre,” as the BBC says. ( https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64075088 ) Then the Russians bombed the theater. “Ukrainian authorities believe 300 people were killed but an AP investigation said the number was closer to 600. Many of the bodies were found in the basement.”
Now, of course, the Russians are destroying what remained of the theater (as the above-linked BBC report says). Why? The better to cover up war crimes, clearly.

Exposing the Russian Military Unit Behind a Massacre in Bucha
Dec 22, 2022
We spent months in Ukraine, investigating who killed dozens of civilians along one street in Bucha, a normally quiet town on the outskirts of Kyiv. Our visual investigation unmasks the military unit responsible, using exclusive phone records, documents, interviews and thousands of hours of video.

Cold Blood
(Funny how petty he is about ordering the death of critics when Putin has more important tasks.)
A Russian critic of Putin died after falling out of a hotel window in India
The death was reported only days after another Russian died at the same Odisha hotel
By Niharika Sharma
Pavel Antov, a Russian politician who criticized president Vladimir Putin for the invasion of Ukraine, has been found dead in India’s eastern state of Odisha.
Antov, a multi-billionaire, fell out of a hotel window on the third floor on Dec. 24. The incident happened two days after another Russian tourist, Vladimir Bidenov, who’s been traveling with Antov, died of a heart attack at the same hotel.
Odia language media reports claim that Antov, who was a member of a legislative region of Vladimir, was on a holiday. The reports also referred to his death as “suicide.” However, in a media statement given to a Russian news agency, Russia’s consul general Alexei Idamki merely said Antov “fell” out a window.
“We are closely following the investigation and receiving all the information from the Odisha police,” the envoy was quoted as saying by TASS news agency.
Soon after the news of Antov’s death broke, speculation began on social media.

China has already reported Avatar 2's figures up through the 26th, yet the entire weekend box office for all movies hasn't gotten an official tally. Not even for Friday or Saturday, and it's Tuesday morning.
Avatar 2's supposed projected take for the Holiday weekend has now inexplicably climbed from $56 Million up to $64 Million, which is $2.5 Million more than it was projected to make before going into the brutal cold weekend.
I'm wondering if you can even take these numbers seriously anymore. Didn't Disney just recently get caught inflating numbers for something else and angering share holders?

Paranoid? lol
Why would I be paranoid about that? I don't own Disney stock. I have no dog in that race.
Just pointing out that Covid-riddled China has been able to report the movie's earnings up until yesterday already and the US can't even put Friday's numbers up by Tuesday morning (which is something that has NEVER happened before), after they've been silently bumping up their weekend projections they made before they knew what a clusterfuck storm was coming in the background with no explanations why.
We know why. Disney has been putting out flop after flop all year, in between one or two flicks that just barely limped across the finish line and broke even. Their stock is down more than 55% from it's March of 2021 high already, and admitting Avatar 2 is a flop will ruin them.

Disney Stock Price Drop:
$197.16 March 12th, 2021
$87.45 December 27th, 2022

Investigating cases related to sexual and gender-based violence present specific challenges. The Commission has found that some Russian Federation soldiers committed such crimes. These acts amounted to different types of violations of rights, including sexual violence, torture, and cruel and inhuman treatment. There are examples of cases where relatives were forced to witness the crimes. In the cases we have investigated, the age of victims of sexual and gendered-based violence ranged from four to 82 years.
The Commission has documented cases in which children have been raped, tortured, and unlawfully confined.

I know the trolls that are left here think I post in response to them. It’s true I take great pleasure in that for years Signym and Kiki posted about the greatness of Russia, and the weakness of American, only to now eat shit, tons of it. That’s due in part because America is currently leading the way in dismantling Russia. Either Kiki’s sudden disappearance is due to her death, or she just ran for the hills when the Ukrainian war started and Russia began getting its ass kick. Or, when she saw that the Russians were raping children and even she couldn’t condone that. Knowing her these years I don’t give her that much credit. She’d have to post so.
At any rate. I post because I believe many X Browncoats still follow things at FireFlyFans from afar. And there are way too many clicks happening for that not to be the case. Therefore, I want to follow through until Trump is documented here thoroughly as having paid the price for all his criminal acts. As well as Russia losing the war it started. And as a country being utterly destroyed for generations because of it.
The good news folks is it is happening at a rapid rate now.

Russians hunt down and murder influential Ukrainians to neutralize resistance
'We will find you:' Russians hunt down Ukrainians on lists
By ERIKA KINETZ https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-europe-3ae1bccfb0ef34dbe363f
7c289ce7934
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Three days after the first Russian bombs struck Ukraine, Andrii Kuprash, the head of a village north of Kyiv, walked into a forest near his home and began to dig. He didn’t stop until he had carved out a shallow pit, big enough for a man like him. It was his just-in-case, a place to lie low if he needed.
He covered it with branches and went back home.
A week later, Kuprash got a call around 8 a.m. from an unknown number. A man speaking Russian asked if he was the village head. Something was amiss.
“No, you’ve got the wrong number,” Kuprash lied. “We will find you anyway,” the man responded. “It’s better to cooperate with us.’” Kuprash grabbed some camping kit and his warmest coat and headed for his hole in the woods.
Kuprash — and others The Associated Press spoke with — had been quietly warned that they were targets for advancing Russian forces. Word went round in circles of influential Ukrainians: Don’t sleep in your own home. Get rid of your phone. Get out of Ukraine.
The hunt was on.
In a deliberate, widespread campaign, Russian forces systematically targeted influential Ukrainians, nationally and locally, to neutralize resistance through detention, torture and executions, an Associated Press investigation has found. The strategy appears to violate the laws of war and could help build a case for genocide.
Russian troops hunted Ukrainians by name, using lists prepared with the help of their intelligence services. In the crosshairs were government officials, journalists, activists, veterans, religious leaders and lawyers.
The AP documented a sample of 61 cases across Ukraine, drawing on Russian lists of names obtained by Ukrainian authorities, photographic evidence of abuse, Russian media accounts and interviews with dozens of victims, family and friends, and Ukrainian officials and activists.
Some victims were held at detention sites, where they were interrogated, beaten and subjected to electric shocks, survivors said. Some ended up in Russia. Others died.
In three cases, Russians tortured people into informing on others. In three other cases, Russians seized family members, including a child, to exert pressure. The pattern was similar across the country, according to testimonies AP collected from occupied and formerly occupied territories around Kyiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv and Donetsk regions.
“Clearly what you have here is the playbook of an authoritarian regime that wants to immediately decapitate the area and eliminate the leadership,” said Stephen Rapp, a former U.S. ambassador-at-large for war crimes issues who is advising Ukraine on prosecutions.
The lists are part of growing evidence that shows much of the violence in Ukraine was planned rather than random. Russia has used brutality as a strategy of war, conceived and implemented within the command structures of its military and intelligence services. The Associated Press has also documented patterns of violence against civilians, including lethal “cleansing operations” along a front of the war commanded by a Russian general implicated in war crimes in Syria.
Led by the Federal Security Service (FSB), Russian intelligence spent months compiling hit lists before the Feb. 24 invasion, according to leaked U.S. intelligence and U.K. national security analysts.
Ukrainian intelligence indicates that the division of Russia’s spy agency tasked with planning the subjugation and occupation of Ukraine — the Ninth Directorate of the FSB’s Fifth Service — scaled up sharply in the summer of 2021. Agents categorized influential Ukrainians as either potential collaborators or unreliable elements to be intimidated or killed, according to the Royal United Services Institute, a prominent defense think tank in London.

For Andrei Soldatov and his friends, February 24 marked the end of Russia as they knew it.
Soldatov said he had begun to question his own identity. “The things we held dear, like the memory of the Second World War, for instance, became completely compromised,” he said, referring to Putin’s baseless claim that Russian forces are “denazifying” Ukraine.
“It’s part of the Russian national identity that the Russian army helped to win the war (against Hitler’s Germany) and now it feels absolutely wrong because this message was used by Putin. You start questioning the history,” he said, adding that the favorable reaction by some parts of the Russian society to the invasion prompted him to research pre-war rhetoric in Germany.
Speaking about Russians as “us” had begun to feel wrong because he deeply disagreed with Russia’s actions, he said. But saying “Russians” didn’t seem right either. “Because of course, I’m Russian, I also have some partial responsibility for what is going on and I do not want to hide from it.”

Berzina said that the expectation of some in the West – that “once people start feeling as though their leaders are doing wrong, that there is an immediate wave of protests on the streets and call for government change that actually has an effect” – does not reflect the reality of life in Russia.
“The Putin regime has done a very good job of either forcing out or imprisoning all viable alternatives that are of the more democratic fashion and then on the other side you have fear of going out into the streets if there’s no clear path forward,” she said.
Olga, the woman who lives in Moscow and has regularly attended protests against the war, has also lost hope.
“Almost all opposition leaders and opinion leaders are now either in prison or abroad. People have a huge potential for political action, but there is no leader and no power base,” she said, adding that civilians will not come out against the armed police, the National Guard, and other security forces.
“It is probably difficult for people from democratic countries to understand the realities of life in a powerful autocracy,” she said. “It’s a terrifying feeling of one’s own insignificance and helplessness in front of a gigantic machine of death and madness.”

Henry Kissinger is Wrong About Preserving Russia Post War
A recent essay by former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger expressing trepidation about an "impotent" Russia on a global scale continues to draw condemnation.
The essay, titled "How to Avoid Another World War" and published earlier this month in The Spectator, compares the current Russia-Ukraine conflict to World War I. Kissinger argues that Russia's "historical role should not be degraded" even with its "propensity for violence," adding that peace should be achieved through negotiation. https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-push-for-peace/
Kissinger's words drew a response from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said the former Cabinet member in the Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford administrations is looking at the wrong calendar and not taking Ukraine's interests into proper consideration.
On Wednesday, advisor, author and political science professor Julian Lindley-French issued a rebuke to Kissinger's essay—notably how Russia as it currently stands must be maintained for the "global equilibrium."
"What I do not understand is Kissinger's implication that we need to maintain THIS radically, revisionist, wrecker-ball Russia because if not the worsening disequilibrium in the international system will only get worse," Lindley-French wrote in a blog post. "That begs a question Kissinger fails to answer: how can an over-armed failing state the very ethos of which is the exploitation and undermining of the rules-based system be convinced to become a pillar of said system?"
While Kissinger related the current war to pre-1917 Europe, Lindley-French calls his comparison a "paradox," arguing that it "was the last time that Russia made any pretense to be a paragon of a rules-based order."
Kissinger called that war "cultural suicide" in his essay. Lindley-French said the consequences of said war "were more strategic and political than cultural."
And while Kissinger said former President Woodrow Wilson delayed peace talks that cost millions of lives in the process, Lindley-French said Wilson and his aides never really made a genuine attempt at all — comparing such alleged olive branches to recent ones made by Vladimir Putin and Sergey Lavrov, referred to by the author as "the cynicism of the ploy."
"Serious negotiations over Ukraine can only begin when Russia acknowledges its errors and its failure and Moscow is convinced of both Western unity and power," Lindley-French said.
Lindley-French's post was praised by retired U.S. Army Commanding General Ben Hodges, who said Kissinger's assessment "got it mostly wrong."
"We must see Putin's Russia for what it is...and preserve the international rules-based order Russia wants to destroy," Hodges tweeted.
Kissinger is right to believe Russia will eventually come to its senses and that nobody should seek to "dismember" the nation, Lindley-French added, but that time hasn't arrived.
"Kissinger is simply wrong to believe that Putin's Russia or any Russia like it can ever be a partner in preserving global equilibrium when it is so determined to destroy it," Lindley-French said.
In May while speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Kissinger said that Ukraine should cede territory to Russia.
