I realized that I bought 20lbs of screws yesterday that were all one size when there were two sizes that were free after rebate so I had to return half of them today and get 10lbs of both sizes.
Not a bad deal. $0.28 tax on each box instead of the $5.25 per box it would have been full price and without the rebates.
I did really great on that one. After taxes and the couple of bucks I had to pay for some cheap levels, I got just over $100 of stuff for less than 7 bucks. I think that's the best percentage I've had yet.
Took that opportunity to pick up a few other things I skipped last trip up there. I got 3 carpet knives with 2 blades each for a buck a piece (when a 5 pack of carpet blades alone costs $2.98 anyhow... so 1 free blade and 3 free knives!), and a few scraper sets and 125 sheets of various grit sandpaper. Didn't do nearly as well on that one, but after the rebates clear I'll have paid about $14 for $35 worth of stuff.
Don't know if I'll get to the post office to send them in today like I wanted to though. That was the only thing I planned to do errand wise today, but it started snowing hard on my way back and all that fresh salt is going to be out on the streets. Until I get the other two break lines replaced, I don't think I want to make them any more rusty than they already are.

It happens for me sometimes. I think I have everything then I get back and start unbagging things and realize I forgot something. That's what happened to me.
I think I just missed some rain today while I was out as when I left the local mall to come home everything looked wet out. So far no snow but it is cold out.

I don't usually do that, but that's because I write a LOT of stuff down and have a car route planned out so I'm not making any left turns and hitting as many places as possible when I do need to go out for something.
These rebates have gotten me a few times in the recent months though. I do write grocery lists for myself but I have been known to forget the lists. Also I write reminder notes when I have to pick up something specific and I'm not sure I'll remember it.
But since I am on foot there is only so much that I can carry in one trip, so sometimes I have do things over a couple of days.
I have to admit that I do a little bit of impulse buying. Especially when it comes to ice cream that I like and is on sale. *L*
Though I do buy things like dish soap out of a dollar store here and sometimes cereal if they have something that I like. Also shampoo.

The only time I buy something not on the list is if there is something I catch on sale or clearance out of the corner of my eye that wasn't in the advertisement. A few months back I bought a whole bunch of filters for my furnace that were super cheap at about $1.25 each that just happened to be on an endcap so you couldn't miss it. And the other day while walking by the front aisle I saw a 2 pack of pumice stones with handles on clearance for $2.00 that will be good for cleaning out that one rust stain from my toilet bowl that no amount of cleaner or scrubbing seems to get out.
Dollar Tree is a different story. I'll hit that place pretty frequently since it's almost always in route home from anywhere I'm going and not a big deal to go in even if I can only think of one thing to get. I get my hair bands, cheap disposable DIY stuff, shampoo/conditioner and the occasional bag of chips if I want to treat myself from there. No need for a list or looking out for sale prices when everything is the same price and the store is so small you've pretty much memorized their entire inventory after you go there a dozen times.

Accidents are how a lot of great works of art begin.
Maybe one day I will be able to write something. I haven't tried since I was around my mid-20's and didn't really have much life experience yet. And unlike your style, characters were always an afterthought for me... basically window dressing for a concept. And how are you supposed to write good dialogue between 2 people if you don't really have interesting people talking to each other in the first place?
I think maybe my concepts would be better in somebody else's hands who knows how to write, and maybe has a more outgoing personality and has had a lot more real life dialogue with other people. My writing is more analytical and better suited for office missives than for short stories or novels that anybody would pay to read.

Too true. I don't use a list when I am going into a thrift store because I am usually shopping for pants and t-shirts as well as regular shirts.

I'm beat!
Me and my friend were going to get some supplies to fix a few things around his house and maybe shoot some pool and watch a movie when we were done getting the fridge to my house, but when I realized that his wife and her step-sister were clearing out the house we stayed to help.
First off, the fridge is AMAZING. Huge upgrade to my kitchen once I swap them out and tap a copper line into it for the ice maker.
But I ended up getting a LOT of other stuff. So much I don't even remember what I got at this point. I don't think I'll keep it all and I'll be going to goodwill, but there are some really good finds there.
Top of the list that I do remember is a brand new hiking backpack (one of the PRICEY ones that I'd never actually buy for myself). A SONY cube alarm clock that looks to have a ton of bells and whistles on it. A beautiful end table. Lots of food and some paper towel and toilet paper. A few unopened gallons of Clorox bleach. A printer/copier/fax machine with extra ink cartridges. Sharpie markers unopened, both fat and fine. 6 filters for my furnace. A giant spool of blank CDs and a small spool of blank DVDs. Two unopened bags of "rich people" coffee beans and a grinder. A marble paper towel holder.
And probably my favorite thing that's going to need some work... One of those really nice wooden caddies with 4 folding tables so people can have something to put their food on. I'm going to sand down the tops, match the stain and throw about 3 coats of poly and they'll be brand new.
Once I've got all the stuff here, I'm going to do an inventory of everything, decide what I'm giving away to Goodwill and let my buddy know that I've got some more work to do for them in trade for this unexpected bounty.

Her step-sister apologized to me too and said she forgot to think of me earlier to come by and see what I wanted before some other non-family came out and grabbed stuff. This was a HUGE house. One of those McMansions that must cost about $500 a month right now for heat and electricity. It was funny though because there wasn't as much "room" space as you would imagine there would be from outside because the ceiling from the first floor on 3/4 of the house was about 20 feet high with a cool staircase going up to only 3 rooms and a bathroom upstairs. Super wide open and really interesting layout, but as much as I love painting I would never try painting a house like that. I'm afraid of heights. If god wanted me to paint 20 foot ceilings he would have given me 12 foot legs.
That set of folding tables is going to be really nice when my aunt and Grams come by for lunch. I'm always bringing down these two high back wooden chairs for them to eat off of since I've yet to put together a proper dining area in my small kitchen.
The only bad part of the day? Both me and my buddy jacked up our backs. And as the night goes on I'm a little concerned that this could turn into one of the BAD ones. I'm hoping it feels better tomorrow when I wake up.

You've gotta be more careful when you are doing heavy stuff like that. That's how I wrenched my right shoulder last year. The first time I did that was over 10 years ago when I was looking after my mom.
I am hoping to make it to a thrift store tomorrow and see if they have an actual cloth tablecloth for my kitchen table. Got a plastic thing on it right now and in certain areas it is starting to stick to the table inspite of the flannel backing on it.

Have you ever tried making something work that for the life of you, you couldn't get working, only to have it accidentally start working for you after messing around with it for hours and you have no explanation why it did?
That's where I'm at right now, regarding something I'm making for my friend and his daughter with an old, crappy laptop that I got from the old man now that he has a speedy new one that was gifted to him for Christmas.
We're in this in-between time with old and new tech again, and for whatever reason I could not get this ancient BIOS on the right settings to read a Linux distro from the internal hard drive (Somewhat similar to a problem I was talking about YEARS ago when I tried installing an SSD to an old all in one PC that wouldn't read any OS from the newer tech).
I was just about to resign myself to buying a USB nub drive and running it from that (which would be slower, but should still have worked for the purpose), but then all of the sudden on a reboot it worked just fine.
What the heck did I do right this time? It's not as if that old BIOS had a lot of options to try out.
Oh well. I won't look a gift horse in the mouth. I'm just going to make sure I lock it down so they can't screw it up and press on with the stuff I thought I might actually have finished before I went to bed tonight. I think I have one more hurdle to jump through because I'm not super familiar with Linux, but I should be able to figure it out from here, and it's always good learning new things.

Been working on that project more or less all day. It's going to work, but it's going to be a lot more work than I thought it would. That's okay. My time is cheap right now.
It is so cold outside right now, and windy too so it's sucking the heat out of the house. I broke down and turned the heat up to 53, but I think I'm going to have to go higher overnight so the pipes don't freeze.
Glad it's only 3 days of this crap this week instead of the 10 days of it we were supposed to get.

Got a call about a pick up game of mah jong for tomorrow then got another call from the head saying that it was cancelled. Probably people leery of the snow the weather people are calling for tomorrow.

Looks like we're both making progress today Brenda.
Unfortunately it looks like I'm so behind now with what I'm doing that in order to make it work with the new software I have a LOT of manual things I need to do to get it all working right.
Not the end of the world, but even though I know what I'm doing after a deep dive inside the software it's not going to be a fast process to make this work unless I learn some coding tricks or just keep brute forcing away at it.
So do I spend what could be a few days learning something and possibly wasting that time getting nothing done, or do I keep doing it the stupid way manually and at least feel like I'm accomplishing something?

Most my life I was living like an island. My step-dad told me that "No man is an island", but I didn't really listen to that advice until about 10 years later and way after I sobered up.
And at first when I was helping people, a large part of it was about planting obligations on them, and a lot of times I never cashed in on them because it put me at an advantageous position. But you start doing it enough and you realize that you get a lot of satisfaction and purpose doing it, then you're not so worried about when you're going to get paid back.
That's awesome that you know somebody to help you get published. I wouldn't even know where to begin on that myself if I didn't know anybody.

Being stuck in a damn cold house makes it easy to work on. Unless I grow un-stubborn and turn the heat up, there's not a whole lot to do around here other than keep the place tidy and veg out all day. That's boring. I only want to do that at night when things are winding down.
I'm really on a roll now. That help I got from the old online buddy just made the world of difference. It's amazing what about 50 typewritten characters arranged in the correct order can do. I actually couldn't even guess how much time he saved me and how many computer restarts too.
Hope you're getting your stuff done too!

My problem is I can have a big problem with asking for help. I can get so stuck on trying to do everything on my own then when I need help it's hard.
Well, she's going to help me write a proposal. You have to do that first. I learned that through research.
I am. I've never gave up on my writing but this is the first time in years that I've actually been able to get things done with it. Well, the momentum for getting ready for someone else to read and help me is certainly with me.

I hear ya, and I do the same. But I've found that going out of my way to help others first makes it pretty easy to get favors returned, and makes it easier for me to ask for help when I need it too. Warm enough today to run some errands, so I'll probably do that. Need to get some milk since I'm out, so I'll pick up a few things while I'm there.
Another semi-decent rebate sale happening, but I'm not going to do nearly as well as the last few hauls percentage-wise since they have Buy1-Get1 on folding saw horses, and I plan on picking up a few pairs for myself and one for the old man.
Still won't be bad though. And they've got some fuel cleaner additive that's free after rebate, so I'm going to pick a bunch of them up and start running them through the car 1 tank at a time now that everything FINALLY seems to be in working order.

With the car problems I've had keeping me homebound more often than not in 2022 going into 2023, I actually can empathize a bit with you on that one. I mean, not really though... My brother who also doesn't drive would know exactly how that feels, and I've only just had a little taste.
Honestly though, back in my drinking days I don't even know what I would have done. I would have had nobody to help me get around and not enough sense to even work on the car.
I tried to take as little advantage as I could over the last year, but I did have friends, family and neighbors that helped me out while I got through that, but that's only because I stopped being a worthless POS.
I know that you probably don't want to do that much inside your apartment because I think you hold boundaries in high regard as I do. When I did rent, I usually had as little to do as possible with neighbors because they could just come to your door and knock on it whenever they felt like if you get too close to them. Maybe it's different with houses, or maybe I've just got good neighbors, but without me having to state it we've got a "phone first" policy if we need anything.

I hit a little speedbump last night that wasted a few hours. At first I thought it was some code that I had written that was bad, but after verifying twice that this wasn't the case, I began to think maybe it was a memory issue by the behavior pattern. Nope... That wasn't it. And even with this old machine there is plenty of RAM to spare.
Unfortunately, this newer system doesn't have a large community behind it with a reams of easily searchable documentation to go to when oddities happen, so I'm kind of flying blind here. And this issue was so vaguely unspecific that there was no way I was going to be able to get my smarter online friends to figure it out for me without sitting right next to them and plopping the laptop on their desk.
So I finally went into the developer options to fiddle around a bit and found a "clear cache" option, similar to what is found in a Fire Stick/TV. With nothing to lose I tried it, and wouldn't you know it... it cleared everything up.
Apparently, while setting this thing up, that's a thing I have to do semi-regularly.
I didn't have to do that with the outdated system from 5 years ago, and if I just used that system this wouldn't have taken a fraction of the time. But that old system was developed with ARM architecture in mind. It was ported to X86_64 and worked on a standard PC, but was far from optimized back then. This new system is optimized for X86_64, so my task is rebuilding my stuff from behind the scenes in as few steps as possible, and then testing that the setup is good.
And speaking of testing, I'm glad that as I've gotten past certain landmarks I've been backing everything up. 3 out of 4 important code documents by the end of last night had been altered from the backups after doing this. Not by much... In fact they're still the same size in KB, but my FTP compare shows them as different now when matching file size. So I'm going to have to compare both documents in a program that compares the differences in txt files.
Maybe I should see if ChatGPT could do all of this for me?

I have been finding that being unable to drive as I get a little older is sucking. Because I am now limited in what at times I can do for myself.
Yeah, you right. I've heard people down in the lobby arguing over stuff and I just don't want to get involved in whatever it is. I just mind my own business. If I see someone I will say hello and maybe talk about the weather or some such thing but that is it.
My hands need a break. I was stressing them out and they need a rest and a stretch in a different way.

Nope... It wasn't the cache clear that fixed the problem. That was just a coincidence.
It wasn't an issue with my code either.
It seems that under a certain condition, the system will bastardize part of my code upon a refresh. I haven't pinpointed exactly why yet, but I have managed to work around this problem twice now, confident that it won't happen again now in these two instances.
I'll get one more opportunity to perhaps figure out exactly what is going on, because there is going to be one more instance where this condition is met.
Otherwise... things are going well.
I didn't get it done before the cold temperature were over, but there's nothing saying I can't keep working on it when it's 40 degrees outside.
ETA: Just one step away from finishing a major part... probably the biggest part. I'm going to have to deal with that bug to gt past it. Hopefully it doesn't keep me up too late tonight and I can get to the rest of it over the weekend. I'm really hoping that the rest is pretty plug-n-play.

Man... I'm sorry about that Brenda. In the future I'm really going to have to figure out if I can get down by my brother or if I can get him up by me. At the moment he can ride on his e-bike and get things he'd need if my old man couldn't do it for him anymore, but with age that's probably not going to be a possibility anymore for him.
Have you considered an e-bike? It really gives him a lot of freedom he never had in his life before.

An e-bike might suit some of my needs but with other things that I want that are far heavier than groceries. It wouldn't.
That's the thing about a car. Someone at mah jong said to me oh you are still young enough to learn to drive. But in my case there is a safety thing now. My reflexes aren't that good any more and if my seizure meds were to stop working and I cause an accident.
Exactly. Not a good thing to take sides in apartment building squabbles.
I've been there with my back too. I can stop typing every so often and stretch my fingers and hands so I'm not doing too much damage.

Do they have driving services there, BRENDA? Here they have something called Dial-a-Ride. It's a bit restricted in that you have to schedule it ahead of time and it's a shared ride, but that might reduce the number of walks you have to take, especially in bad weather.

If you order some things new, like appliances or furniture, they deliver and (in the case of appliances) install. Maybe for some things like small pieces of furniture (chairs and such) you can have them deliver? It will cost $$$ tho. At some point, if we live long enough, we will all face not being able to drive.
My grandma lived to a ripe old age of 93 w/o ever driving. But then, she had three children living nearby.

I'm sure that in BC there are specific rules around driving with a seizure disorder or I know there were. That's my thing with my seizures, I just stop for a period of time. So, yeah driving not a good thing for me.
There is service called HANDY DART but you have to have a form filled out by your doctor and there is a certain criteria on that.
You have a good point and true too on the money for delivery fees.
I know people like that now. They don't drive anymore and they have children living close that can help them.

I'd imagine that you could probably even get some sort of "wagon" to attach to the back of it to haul bigger things if you wanted to. I'm going to guess that you're probably 100lbs less than he is, so right there you'd have 100lbs of extra carrying capacity.
This time he didn't mess around with a piece of junk toy that was more like a glorified Power Wheel. This thing is closer to a small street legal electric motorcycle. I think he might have paid somewhere around $1,500 for it.
I'm so glad I pushed my dad into allowing him to buy it. He was strongly against the idea. But the amount of freedom and personal agency it's given him since he got it is astounding. And now that he lives in a reasonably smaller town that has everything within a reasonable distance from his place, there's really nothing he can't do with his bike that he could have done with a car. The only time that isn't true is when the weather is really bad.
I know the price is high, but I do think it's something you may want to consider, Brenda.

Another hurdle will be jumped today. Unfortunately, this one will require quite a bit of testing, documentation and new code, but fortunately it's a very small portion of the greater whole and shouldn't take me more than today to fix.
I'm hoping I have time to spare so I can go back and fix a few other loose ends on other aspects that I've passed on doing now. It's all about getting the biggest bang for my buck up front and then going back and spending time smoothing out the rough edges. Otherwise it becomes too daunting in my mind if I spend an inordinate amount of time on the little things up front.
I'd say I'm about 80% done with it now.

Another thing to consider is that in these parts even bicycles are prohibited from sidewalks. E-bikes are on the road with cars, motorcycles and bicycles.
If your city has bicycle lanes and/or the traffic isn't too fast you'd be ok but I'd hate to be on a four lane boulevard. Especially with parked cars.

Got my walk in but couldn't avoid the rain. It rained on me as I was going to the library. Oh well.
Just having a nice sit down for today as I tired my hands out with all the typing I did yesterday. I also have to put those finished chapters away and get out the last two. Fingers on my right hand are stiff today.
Bought a garlic sausage over the weekend and ate half of it. The brand used to be good but has no flavour now. But enough garlic and pepper in it to upset my stomach over night. Had to throw the rest of it out.

I'm found an episode of a show she remembered from a long time ago on the Tube and downloaded it. I'm also going to bring a few movies she hasn't seen in a long time and we're going to watch them. She doesn't know that yet. It's going to be a surprise.
I'm also going to bring my camera to take some pics of her showerless tub that is leaking everywhere. She hasn't used it in 2 years, and it's getting far to hard to get her to my aunt's place to shower her there, especially in the winter, and because she's just not doing anything anymore. I'm going to get her to get up and walk around and do a few laps around the 1st floor every hour or so the whole time I'm there. I got her an egg timer to remind her to do that... I'm just hoping she remembers to use it when I'm not there.
My aunt got a quote for just removing the tub and walls and put in a walk in shower base and let's just say that it is completely unaffordable for her.
My friend's dad has paid off his debts to me and he's still battling some health issues of his own, but I'm hoping I can get him to come over and give me a quote on what he'd want just to fix the plumbing, pick up materials and help me set the shower base on the fixed drain pipe.
I'm just going to put up vinyl walls and it's going to be a quick and dirty job, but the house is going to be sold as is anyhow and the rest of the bathroom already looks like crap anyhow. I just want my aunt to have a place to bathe my grandma without it being a massive half-a-day chore.
I've also got 3 grab bars that I took when I helped demolition a bathroom a few years ago, so I'm going to install boards behind the new walls so I can screw them down tight and she'll have something that won't budge to hold onto wherever she is in there. We might possibly put a folding bench in the back for her to sit on too, but one that would support her weight is pretty pricey, so I'm just going to put some boards back where it would go so it's always an easy option down the road.
I just hope my friend's dad is up for it. I don't know crap about plumbing and I won't be able to do the job without him, or without my aunt and grandma shelling out a lot of money for a plumber.

Been so busy busy busy, haven't had much time to post. But I HAVE been reading.
I'm bird-dogging our acccounts and need to schedule eye and dental exams for all of us, and in the meantime my kidneys, sadly, are slowly and mysteriously getting worse. All the diagnostic tests are fine, except kidney function, which is about 40% of what it should be.
Also, it seems I broke the proximal end of ny baby toe bone when I accidentally kicked a chair leg. How clumsy! But that explains the big bruise I had across the base of my toes.
In the meantime, I hired.. or THOUGHT I hired.. a guy to help me with front yard cleanup, but he turned out to be a no call/no show, so I started the weed whacking myself as a first step towards re-grading, leveling and mulching. I got most of the weed whacking done but there is so much cleanup to do everywhere it just looks insurmountable, so I guess I need to try and find another guy to help. But we did hire a guy to take down our two big Mexican fan palms in the back and three king palms(?) in the front. They're so gorram messy, constantly dropping stalks and/or fronds on the roof and seeds everywhere, growing seedlings that are impossible to dig up.I'm glad they're gone!
Also used my sis's pocket reciproating saw to cut down an ugly bush, and need to do quite a bit more tree and shrub trimming/removal.

Oh yeah. I used to be able to tolerate garlic sausage but since I've discovered that I can't tolerate garlic any more this was a biiiig mistake. I gave myself an upset stomach all because I wanted something different for supper. *sigh* Not doing that again.
I don't eat things that are overly spicy and I am careful with caffeine in general. Too much caffeine and I have an upset stomach until my body can get rid of all of it.

It was raining when I went out and has now stopped that I am in for the day.
My hand is a little better so I typed out just Ch. 30 for today. I also got rid of my mouse pad with the wrist rest as it was driving me a little batty with the mouse. Using an envelope instead.

I like chicken wings too and not very often when I get a small package. Just enough for a couple of meals which is fine by me.
I'm okay with broccoli and in fact like it. But I also avoid onion. That recipe would probably work for me without the onion. Please do post it. :)

I haven't been talking about it because I didn't want to bring any bad luck on the situation, but my Grams hasn't been doing well for about a week. It would come and go, but she was suffering from shortness of breath and it was sometimes apparent when I'd talk to her on the phone. The first I'd heard about it was the day after I talked to her at night about a week ago and ended the call slightly concerned that she didn't sound like herself. My old man went to play some board games with her like he does about 3-4 days a week the next morning and she looked pale and was complaining about being short of breath. He gave her a ginger ale so she could burp (a fix she's used for years when she has acid reflux) and that actually seemed to help right away. My dad stayed hours later than he usually does and by the time they'd played some games and he left he said she was back to normal.
But it's persisted...
And I've been trying to guilt her kids into getting her to a doctor or the hospital and they just wouldn't do it. Shes' turning 90 next week and I'd just get "well she's old". Yeah. She IS old. But this isn't normal. She was fine, fine, fine, fine, fine and then last week happened. To their defense, she's just as stubborn as I am and would have been outraged if they called for an ambulance unless she was sure she was dying. She doesn't get angry very often at all, but that would have been a step over the line for her. She's also been extremely lazy and not wanting to do anything so I don't think she would have cooperated if they wanted to take her to see somebody (but now we know why).
So... She's in the hospital today. They found something on her lung and water underneath it. They're going to do the same thing they did for my friend's dad and drain it tomorrow morning and run some more tests.
(I'm hoping that you can ease my mind here Sigs and tell me that I might be barking up the right tree by thinking it could have been walking pneumonia. The symptoms match... Not just this last week, but it looks as though it can even have effects on memory too. Her long term memory is fine, but her short term has been going downhill for about a year but damn near fell off a cliff in the last 2 months.)
I'm leaving tomorrow morning and I'm going to see her. I don't know if I'm going to be spending the night in the hospital, but it's close to her house and I can go crash there if the hibby jibbies I get over hospitals gets to be too much. I'm hoping my uncle and his wife who live close by are going to be joining in the shifts too. I don't think my dad is going to make it unless he hears something is going horribly wrong.

TBH walking pneumonia wasn't the first thing I thought of when you mentioned SOB (shortness of breath) but it does fit her symptoms.
Old people don't run fevers like young people, so taking temperature isn't a reliable indicator of infection. Old people also don't develop localized inflammation and pain, so pain doesn't help pinpoint the problem. But when an elderly person's memory/orientation SUDDENLY tanks.. like my mom asking about my g'ma, who had been dead for 30 years... almost always means an infection of some sort. It could be anything from an ingrown toenail to a UTI to an ear/tooth infection to pneumonia, but a sudden drop in cognition should always prompt a careful examination for infection. If there is one, it's an easy fix: a course of antibiotics.
That being said, fluid in the lungs can also indicate a heart problem: If the heart is pumping weakly then it's not pushing blood thru the kidneys. And kidneys are pretty mechanistic - they can't filter out excess fluid unless blood flows thru them at sufficient flow and pressure, so fluid can build up in ankles, lower legs, abdomen,or lungs. Unfortunately the fluid buildup makes heart function worse

Alright...
I'm going late this afternoon to meet my aunt at my Grandma's house, and then I'm going to have the night shift with her. I might also spend most of the day there tomorrow so my aunt doesn't have to call another day off of work.
They haven't mentioned this morning about removing the water from under the lung yet, but I'm sure it's on the to-do list. They're going to do an echogram though. My aunt was under the impression somebody told her there wasn't a heart problem, but who knows if that's actually true when you're playing a game of telephone. It's good sense to run as many tests possible. They also gave her a shot of something that (should) prevent blood clots this morning already.
Going to shower and get packed and make a few pit stops on the way out there. I'll get there early and avoid any rush hour, although it shouldn't be bad since there isn't any construction going on anywhere.
First big trip with my car since all the repairs. Fingers crossed.

It's so stressful when someone you care about is in hospital. But even when they're only semi-conscious and seem unaware, they can hear you. Having been yanked from familiar surroundings into an alien world can be very disorienting and agitating, but even tho they may not know where they are or even who they are, a familiar voice, face, and touch can be very reassuring and allow them to relax and heal. If your g'ma thrashes around, tries to yank out tubes or pull out leads or climb out of bed, tell her that you're there. Place a reassuring hand on her arm, if she's used to you touching her, and tell her that you'll take care of her. Ask her what she needs. If she needs changing, call the aide. If she needs water, and water is allowed, give her sips of water (with a straw!) if she's in serious distress - trouble breathing, etc - don't use the call button. Boogie on over to the nurses' station and get help Hospital staff is busy, having you there to attend to her helps her AND them. Be assured, you just being there will help. Iven been on both sides of that equation, and I know. And she too will know someone is in her corner.
But from YOUR POV, when the hospital staff talks to you ... they might not do this at night but if they take her for tests ... ask them what tests. Ask them what meds she is on, and TAKE NOTES. Ask them to spell it out if need be. Many of my family worked in hospitals- RN, EKG tech/stat lab tech, ER doctor ... I know the lingo. I'm oriented to hospital procedure. But unless I take notes I forget critical info under stress. It will help you g'mas ongoing care at home if someone knows what's wrong, what the treatments/meds are, what they do, symptoms to look out for etc.
I'm not a prayerful person, SIX, but I sincerely hope the best for you and your g'ma.

I can tolerate mice. We had a wee little field mouse in our kitchen... altho it baffles me where it got in.. so I bought a wee little have-a-heart mousetrap and caught it. And took it a bit away and released it. It was cute!
But I can't stand rats and cockroaches.
Problem with rodents in general (rats, mice, hamsters etc) is that they like to gnaw on electrical wires and internet/phone cables. We had a hamster that got loose and almost fried itself gnawing on our frig power cord. Rats, mice, and Argentinian ants are the bane of server farms everywhere. But I digress...
I hope management knows about the mouse problem. They can gnaw on electrical wire and phone/ internet lines
the walls (if it's not sheathed in metal conduit) and cause all kinds of expensive problems. So it's not just a matter of cleanliness. Since mice and rats can live inside of walks and between floors I think this needs to be tackled building-wide.
