Running against the media in politics is like betting against the house in gambling: The odds are against you, to say the least. I know that from personal experience, having run for Congress on a 9/11 truth platform in 2008. But it isn’t just me: There are countless examples of campaigns whose outcomes were determined by the media’s slanted coverage. (To cite an extreme example, big media’s decision to censor the Hunter Biden laptop story likely prevented Donald Trump from being re-elected in 2020.)

Trump composed his triumphant 2016 electoral symphony in the key of invective, scapegoating, demonization, and hatred (or “righteous anger” if you prefer, though not all of it was righteous). His needling and insults, which included allusions to the alleged complicity of George W. Bush in 9/11 and Ted Cruz’s father in the JFK assassination, were refreshing to those of us who have discovered the almost unimaginable corruption of the American political establishment. And his harsh treatment of Hillary Clinton, who on October 9th 2016 was forced to debate Trump with three of her husband Bill’s sexual assault victims glaring at her from the audience, and who cannot have been pleased by the tens of thousands of people at Trump rallies chanting “lock her up,” may not have been chivalrous, but it was effective.
Trump did not keep his promises. He didn’t lock her up. And he didn’t drain the swamp—he stocked it. His administration offered no meaningful change, except for completely surrendering to the ultra-extremist Zionist agenda of Bibi Netanyahu. Trump failed to withdraw from Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. He didn’t terminate NATO, but instead armed Ukraine to the teeth and set the stage for the current war on Russia. His administration nearly started World War III three times: once by bombing Syria, once by murdering Gen.

For centuries, American leaders have demonstrated a willingness to inflict violence on foreigners not in pursuit of any universal ideology, but a narrow vision of expanding the country’s territory and advancing the national interest. Such purportedly “realist” thinking is behind many of America’s most infamous atrocities, from Native genocide to the intentional slaughter of civilians during the Vietnam War.
It is also directly echoed by Trump in both word and deed. This is a president who pardoned convicted war criminals, assassinated Iran’s top general, and deployed troops to seize Syria’s oil deposits — openly admitting he wanted to hand them over to ExxonMobil. A second term promises more of the same: He has already asked advisers for “battle plans” to invade Mexico in an effort to combat drug cartels.

If that were me, I'd have made 100 copies of it and just mailed them out to random people both in the USA and outside of it. I'm currently sitting on over 100 500gb hard drives that I was going to use for something years ago but never got around to.

An astonishingly bad idea that’s gotten popular very quickly.
One of the hottest new ideas in Republican politics is, apparently, launching a war in Mexico.
Three recent articles — in Rolling Stone, Politico, and Semafor — traced the rise of the proposal from obscurity to the party’s highest levels, finding ample evidence of the idea’s popularity in the GOP ranks. Former President Donald Trump, for example, has been asking for a “battle plan” to “attack Mexico,” specifically targeting drug cartel strongholds in the country. Every single declared Republican presidential candidatehas endorsed treating cartels like terrorist organizations. And in both the House and the Senate, leading Republicans have proposed authorizing the use of military force in Mexico to fight cartels.
Launching cross-border raids into the territory of the US’s neighbor and third-largest trading partner, a vital partner on many issues, is just about the worst idea, ever. The US and Latin American partners have been waging a literal war on drugs for decades; military campaigns like Plan Colombia have repeatedly failed to stop narcotics from entering the United States. Attacks on Mexican soil seem no more promising — and considerably more likely to backfire in dangerous ways.
In reporting this piece, I spoke to four different experts on foreign policy and/or the Mexican border from across the ideological spectrum; not one of them thought these proposals contained anything like a workable idea. “The planning would embarrass Paul Wolfowitz,” quipped Justin Logan, the director of defense and foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute.
What this exposes, more than anything else, is an important way the Republican party hasn’t changed in the Trump era.
As much as Trump billed himself as a kind of isolationist critic of the Republican foreign policy consensus, his actual track record as president shows that he was quite willing to use force aggressively. He used force in somewhat different ways, and for different reasons, than his predecessors — but very clearly accepted that some of America’s big foreign policy problems could be solved by bombing them into oblivion.
The enthusiasm for a new Mexican-American war illustrates the same sort of principle.

Former president Donald Trump has steadily begun outlining his vision for a second-term agenda, focusing on unfinished business from his time in the White House and an expansive vision for how he would wield federal power. In online videos and stump speeches, Trump is pledging to pick up where his first term left off and push even further.
Where he earlier changed border policies to reduce refugees and people seeking asylum, he’s now promising to conduct an unprecedented deportation operation. Where he previously moved to make it easier to fire federal workers, he’s now proposing a new civil service exam. After urging state and local officials to take harsher measures on crime and homelessness, Trump says he is now determined to take more direct federal action.
“In 2016, I declared I am your voice,” Trump said in a speech last month at the Conservative Political Action Conference and repeated at his first 2024 campaign rally in Waco a few weeks later. “Today, I add: I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution.”
Trump’s emerging platform marks a sharp departure from traditional conservative orthodoxy emphasizing small government, which was famously summed up in Ronald Reagan’s first inaugural address: “Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.” Trump, by contrast, is proposing to apply government power, centralized under his authority, toward a vast range of issues that have long remained outside the scope of federal control.
Experts called some of Trump’s ideas impractical, reckless, self-defeating, potentially illegal and even dangerous. Some of Trump’s specific proposals are admittedly underdeveloped, such as a plan for building futuristic cities from scratch on unused federal land, which has been compared to projects in repressive regimes such as Saudi Arabia.
But Trump has a track record of floating ideas that stoke widespread outrage or confusion, then roiling government and legal institutions to realize them, such as banning citizens of several majority-Muslim countries from coming to the United States and imposing trade barriers. Trump is currently facing federal and local criminal investigations arising from his unsuccessful efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat, which ultimately inspired a deadly riot by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol.
“As with so many things Trump, it’ll be sticky to sort out where what he’s proposing is literally unlawful, which some things would be, and where what he’s proposing would fly in the face of well-established and deeply principled norms,” said Steve Vladeck, an expert on constitutional and national security law at the University of Texas at Austin.
Trump campaign advisers said the former president will continue rolling out new policy ideas, with the goal of being upfront with voters about his agenda and letting them vote based on policy, similar to how he released a list of his potential Supreme Court nominees during the 2016 campaign. They identified Trump’s top priority as public safety and law enforcement, while stressing a commitment to collaborating with state authorities and working within the law.

Since when did policing become a Federal responsibility? If the state and local government can't handle it, too bad for their citizens but changing the President will not fix local problems -- the Constitution was deliberately set up so that the Federal government cannot do what your state is supposed to do.
The ugly truth is that the Federal government can't do a damn thing about Chicago crime, except in very special cases such as counterfeiting, enforcing Prohibition (but that's history), the Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing (more history), the Branch Davidian Church in Waco violated every law about owning machine guns (even more ancient history) or ranchers claiming Federal land as their private property and refusing to pay their rent for grazing in National Forests.

President Biden’s administration is poised to announce limits on greenhouse gas emissions from power plants that could compel them to capture the pollution from their smokestacks, technology now used by fewer than 20 of the nation’s 3,400 coal and gas-fired plants, according to three people who were briefed on the rule.
If implemented, the proposed regulation would be the first time the federal government has restricted carbon dioxide emissions from existing power plants, which generate about 25 percent of the planet-warming pollution produced by the United States. It would also apply to future plants.
Almost all coal and gas-fired power plants would have to cut or capture nearly all of their carbon dioxide emissions by 2040, according to the people familiar with the regulation, who asked not to be identified because the rule has not been made public.
The proposed rule is sure to face opposition from the fossil fuel industry, power plant operators and their allies in Congress. It is likely to draw an immediate legal challenge from a group of Republican attorneys general that has already sued the Biden administration to stop other climate policies. A future administration could also weaken the regulation.
It would not mandate the use of carbon capture equipment, a nascent and expensive technology; rather, it would set caps on pollution rates that plant operators would have to meet. They could do that by using a different technology or, in the case of gas plants, switching to a fuel source like green hydrogen, which does not emit carbon, according to the people familiar with the matter. But the regulation could lead to the broader adoption of carbon capture technology, the people said.

Planning how much the US government will spend 10 years into the future is insanity and stupidity written into law. At this point, you are supposed to realize that the Federal government can't predict what will happen next year, but they are forced to try because it takes more than a year to pass a spending budget. Personally, this is just one more reason why I don't really care much if I live beyond 50 years old. The best days are far in the rear-view mirror, and the idea of living the rest of my life into old age having to count calories just to exist isn't appealing to me. If this doesn't stabilize and isn't going to be easy and something that I don't have to put a lot of effort into, I probably just won't bother. I already don't have a bad diet, but if I have to live off of tree sap and crickets to stay alive, count me out.

There’s a Remarkable Piece of Evidence in the E. Jean Carroll Trial
The federal judge presiding over the trial ruled that Carroll’s legal team could include the Access Hollywood tape as evidence to support her claim that Trump raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in the mid-1990s. Evidence of a defendant’s general propensity for doing something is not usually admissible as proof that they committed a distinct act, but the judge decided that Carroll’s case falls within a federal exception to that norm: In civil cases “based on” an alleged sexual assault, the plaintiff can provide evidence that the defendant committed any other sexual assault.
And the Access Hollywood video can be read as exactly that kind of evidence, the judge ruled.

The Republican plan for 2024 is already failing, and the party leadership can see it and knows it.
There was no secret to a more intelligent and intentional Republican plan for 2024. It would have gone like this:
1). Replace Donald Trump at the head of the ticket with somebody less obnoxious and impulsive.
2). Capitalize on inflation and other economic troubles.
3). Offer plausible ideas on drugs, crime, and border enforcement.
4). Reassure women worried about the post-Roe future.
5). Don’t be too obvious about suppressing Democratic votes, because really blatant voter suppression will provoke and mobilize Democrats to vote, not discourage them.
Unfortunately for them, Republicans have turned every element of the plan upside down and inside out. Despite lavish anti-Trump donations by big-money Republicans, Trump is cruising to easy renomination. Rather than capitalize on existing economic troubles, Republicans have started a debt-ceiling fight that will cast them as the cause of America’s economic troubles. Worse for them, the troubles are fast receding. Inflation is vexing, but the recession that Republicans hoped for did not materialize: Instead, Joe Biden has presided over the fastest and steepest unemployment reduction in U.S. economic history since he took office in January 2021.
The big new Republican idea to halt the flow of drugs is to bomb or invade Mexico. Instead of reassuring women, Republican state legislators and Republican judges are signaling that they will support a national abortion ban if their party wins in 2024—and are already building the apparatus of surveillance and control of women necessary to make such a ban effective. Republican state-level voter-suppression schemes have been noisy and alarming when the GOP plan called for them to be subtle and technical.
It’s early in the election cycle, of course, but not too early to wonder: Are we watching a Republican electoral disaster in the making?
Biden’s poll numbers are only so-so. But a presidential election offers a stark and binary choice: this or that? Biden may fall short of some voters’ imagined ideal of a president, but in 2024, voters won’t be comparing the Democrat with that ideal. They will be comparing him with the Republican alternative.
An American must be at least 36 years old to have participated in an election in which the Republican candidate for president won the most votes. An American must be at least 52 years old to have participated in two presidential elections in which the Republican nominee got the most votes.
Despite this, over the past 30 years, the GOP has succeeded in leveraging its smaller share of the vote into a larger share of national power. That same 36-year-old American has lived half of his or her adult life under a Republican-controlled Senate, and even more of it under a Republican-majority House of Representatives. Through almost all of that American’s adult life, Republicans have held more than half of all state legislatures. Conservative dominance of the federal courts has become ever more total in the past two decades, culminating in the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade.
Some of the Republicans’ leverage can be explained by the American electoral system’s tilt against metropolitan areas. Some of their success is due to luck. The GOP’s big year of 2010 also happened to be a redistricting year, so one successful election translated into a decade of more comprehensively gerrymandered state legislatures. (Democrats have not had a big win in a redistricting year since 1930.)
But the tilt is not infinite, and the party’s luck is running out. Republicans have suffered a series of heavy defeats since the rise of Trump: loss of the House in 2018, loss of the presidency in 2020, loss of the Senate in 2021, losses at the state level in 2022 (Democrats won net two governorships an

Trump explains why he was treated worse than Abraham Lincoln — who was assassinated
For the second weekend in a row, Fox host Mark Levin continued showing videos of his conversation with Donald Trump. Among the things Trump thought the Fox audience needed to know is that he was treated worse than Abraham Lincoln, who was killed before leaving office.
Trump began by saying that former President Andrew Jackson was treated very badly after he broke previous treaties, stole land, and forced the march of Native Americans to "Indian Territory." That land was then taken from the Native tribes and became known as Oklahoma.
"Abraham Lincoln, they say, was, you know, he had a civil war going on," Trump educated Levin. "But Abraham Lincoln was just vilified. But now they say Trump got treated the worst of all."
He never explained who "they" were.
"Because what they did was come up with phony stuff. Russia, Russia, Russia. It was all hoaxes. The Mueller witch hunt, which turned out to be 'no collusion.'"
That isn't what Mueller found. He never looked into Trump's potential collusion with Russia. What he did document were at least ten instances of obstruction of justice, which Trump has never been tried over.
"And they had the laptop, they could have figured that out because on the laptop, if you look at it, you could have figured that out easily," Trump said.
It's unclear what he was talking about, as there was never a "laptop" that belonged to Trump that was part of the Mueller probe. It's possible that it was classified information, but it never made it into the Mueller report. He might be confused about the laptop that was just seized from his staffer involved in the classified documents scandal.
Lincoln was reelected in his second bid for president, unlike Trump. It was the following year that he was shot by actor John Wilkes Booth.

Republican politicians — from presidential contenders to anonymous state legislators — are monomaniacally focused on banning books, fighting “wokeness” and harassing transgender people. Some Republicans are even still denying the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election, doubling down on the election-related conspiracies that hobbled many Republican candidates in the midterms.
Not only do Americans not care about the various Republican obsessions — in a recent Fox News poll 1 percent of respondents said “wokeness” was “the most important issue facing the country today” — but a large majority say that those obsessions have gone too far. According to Fox, 60 percent of Americans said “book banning by school boards” was a major problem. Fifty-seven percent said the same for political attacks on families with transgender children.
It is not for nothing that in Biden’s first TV ad of the 2024 campaign, he took specific aim at conservative book bans as a threat to freedom and American democracy.
And yet there’s no sign that Republicans will relent and shift focus. Just the opposite, in fact; the party is poised to lurch even farther down the road of its alienating preoccupations. On abortion, for example, Ronna McDaniel, the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, says candidates need to address the issue “head-on” in 2024 — that they can’t be “uncomfortable” on the issue and need to say “I’m proud to be pro-life.”
But the Republican Party has veered quite far from most Americans on abortion rights, and in a contested race for the presidential nomination, a “head-on” focus will possibly mean a fight over which candidate can claim the most draconian abortion views and policy aims.
There’s more: DeSantis is in the midst of a legal battle with Disney, one of the most beloved companies on the planet, and House Republicans are threatening the global economy in order to pass a set of deeply unpopular spending cuts to widely used assistance programs.
Taken together, it’s as if the Republican Party has committed itself to being as off-putting as possible to as many Americans as possible. That doesn’t mean the party is doomed, of course. But as of this moment, it is hard to say it’s on the road to political success.
As for Joe Biden? The current state of the Republican Party only strengthens his most important political asset — his normalcy. He promised, in 2020, that he would be a normal president. And he is promising, for 2024, to continue to serve as a normal president. Normal isn’t fun and normal isn’t exciting. But normal has already won one election, and I won’t be surprised if it wins another.

Donald Trump has faced an incredible number of lawsuits in his life. In 2016 USA Today found that Trump and his businesses were involved in at least 3,500 legal actions in federal and state courts over the three decades before that.
Some of those legal troubles are, notably, going on as we speak, while he’s running for president. That got us wondering: Has anyone been sued more times than Trump? What’s the most someone has ever been sued in the U.S., anyway?
Googling the question doesn’t get you very far. The results are mostly stories about the world’s most litigious man (allegedly! Please don’t sue us): Jonathan Lee Riches, who has filed over 4,000 lawsuits, according to ABC News. When the Guinness Book of World Records awarded him the world record for most lawsuits filed, he—guess what?—sued them.
So I reached out to a few law professors who specialize in complex litigation, and they couldn’t think of anyone who has been entangled in as many lawsuits, as both a plaintiff and a defendant, as Trump. It’s “definitely unprecedented” for a former president, said Jed Shugerman, a law professor at Fordham University School of Law.
Trump has built up a massive public profile as a businessman and now a former president, and some experts think that it’s emboldened him to sue, even threatening people that cross him. “One thing that makes Donald Trump unique is that he doesn’t shy away from litigation. He relishes it. For him, it’s what I’ve always thought of as an overall strategy to elevate his public profile,” explained Adam Zimmerman, a law professor at Loyola Law School. If a lawsuit Trump has initiated turns sour, he usually turns it around and blames the court system—the same argument he uses when someone else sues him.
Trump’s large number of legal entanglements is particularly impressive because it’s not exactly easy to bring a lawsuit in the U.S. The legal system is expensive, with a huge assortment of court fees, plus the cost of hiring a lawyer. It also moves pretty slowly. But, somehow, none of that has deterred Trump. “I find it really surprising that Trump is able to pay for this much litigation and that people continue to take the risk of representing him,” said Alexandra Lahav, a law professor at Cornell Law School.
It’s surprising, in part, because Trump has a reputation for not paying his legal bills. One of Trump’s lead lawyers for his second impeachment trial quit just days before it was set to start over a compensation dispute, according to Axios. Trump and his businesses have faced at least 60 lawsuits over unpaid wages, including 24 violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act. He’s earned a reputation of stinginess, and his recent federal election filings indicate he’s turning to his presidential campaign for help, spending about $10 million from his Save America PAC to pay for personal legal fees.

Congress in 1917 capped the size of the federal debt. Over the years, Congress has raised the debt ceiling scores of times, most recently two years ago, when it set the cap at $31.4 trillion. We hit that amount on Jan. 19 and are being told that the “extraordinary measures” Treasury has available to get around it are about to run out. When that happens, all hell will break loose.
Taking advantage of that prospect, congressional Republicans are threatening to do nothing unless the administration agrees to slash many government programs their party has had in its sights. If the president caves into their demands, they will agree to raise the cap — until this crisis occurs again. Then, they will surely pursue the same game of chicken or, maybe more accurately, Russian roulette.
Ignoring one law in order to uphold every other has compelling historical precedent. It’s precisely what Abraham Lincoln did when he briefly overrode the habeas corpus law in 1861 to save the Union, later saying to Congress, “Are all the laws, but one, to go unexecuted, and the government itself go to pieces, lest that one be violated?”
For a president to pick the lesser of two evils when no other option exists is the essence of constitutional leadership, not the action of a tyrant. And there is no doubt that ignoring the debt ceiling until Congress either raises or abolishes it is a lesser evil than leaving those with lawful claims against the Treasury out in the cold. Entrusting the president to decide which of the government’s promises to honor and which creditors to stiff is a power that the Supreme Court denied him when it handed down a 1998 decision that prevented him from vetoing line items within a budget.
In any event, Section 4 of the 14th Amendment prohibits the president from permanently stiffing our creditors — even those required to wait their turn after the Treasury runs dry. So even if Speaker Kevin McCarthy and those pulling his strings succeed in making some of those creditors wait, it wouldn’t eliminate our debts; it would merely replace them with I.O.U.s. And that’s just debt in another form.
All Congress would have done is create economic catastrophe on top of constitutional crisis — and without securing compliance with the debt ceiling that Republican claim to want.

“Not My Type” -- Donald Trump’s astonishing deposition in the E. Jean Carroll trial pretty much says it all.
Trump’s deposition is a defense attorney’s worst nightmare. In the video of Donald Trump’s October 2022 deposition for the E. Jean Carroll trial, he comes off like a petty, resentful liar, making a series of unforced errors so blatant it almost seems he is trying to lose his case.
The video was Trump’s only appearance in the civil trial in which he stands accused of raping and defaming Carroll; his last opportunity to register his intent to take the stand expired on Sunday. The jury heard closing arguments on Monday, yesterday, and will now deliberate on a verdict.
Watching clips from the deposition, which Carroll’s attorneys played for the jury last week, it is easy to see why Trump and his legal team decided to keep him off the stand. His performance suggests he is incapable of even pretending to go through the motions of a humble, respectful round of questioning with a female attorney, much less convince a jury that he is not the kind of guy who would rape someone in a department store dressing room.
In one clip, Trump is confronted with the 2005 Access Hollywood tape — another piece of evidence that was presented to the jury — in which he contended, on a hot mic, that “When you’re a star, they let you do it.” (“It,” you may recall, is kissing women without seeking their permission and grabbing them “by the pussy.”)
“Well, historically, that’s true with stars,” Trump responds in the deposition.
“It’s true you can grab them by the pussy?” Carroll’s lawyer, the prominent women’s rights attorney Roberta Kaplan, asks.
Trump replies, “Well, that’s what — if you look over the last million years, I guess that’s been largely true. Not always, but largely true. Unfortunately, or fortunately.”
It is hard to decide which part of Trump’s self-defense is more absurd and less self-exonerating: the part where he suggests that he was merely explaining to Billy Bush the regrettable history of men using their fame to sexually abuse and exploit women, or the part where he suggests that such abuse may be fortunate. Fortunate! Neither part quite makes Trump seem like a credible defendant who disapproves of sexual assault.
Elsewhere in the deposition tape, Trump answers a question from Kaplan about his claim that Jessica Leeds, who testified last week that Trump forcibly kissed and groped her on an airplane in the 1970s, “would not be my first choice” to “go after.” Then, unprompted, Trump goes on to assess Kaplan’s sexual desirability. “You wouldn’t be a choice of mine either, to be honest with you. I hope you’re not insulted,” he said.
He went on, “I wouldn’t, in any circumstances, have any interest in you.”
This is the former president up to all his old tricks: low-key glorifying sexual assault, attempting to demean a woman wielding power in his vicinity by delivering a sexist, sexualizing insult. None of it should surprise anyone who has paid attention to Trump’s conduct over the course of his life. But somehow, his inability to change his behavior even a little bit to protect himself from a damaging jury verdict suggests new levels of impulse non-control. He had to simply refrain from mocking a woman’s appearance for the duration of one single deposition, which is occurring because another woman has accused him of rape — and he can’t. Or he can’t fathom the possibility that he may experience a consequence of his actions.
A third astonishing moment of the deposition makes a factual point that could clinch the defamation charge.

The Reason Donald Trump Can’t Be Destroyed
There’s not really an incentive for Donald Trump to modify or normalize his behavior. Why would he? In fact, I suspect his popularity would wane if Trump normalized.
Bear in mind: Donald Trump is currently on trial for allegations of rape. Think about that. On trial for rape. And it’s barely gaining traction in the news cycle. That’s how different the standard is for Trump.
And frankly, Trump deserves credit for crafting that standard. His outlandish behavior has been consistent enough to suggest authenticity. Similarly, he has never apologized for his behavior. He owns it and his base eats it up. The result has been the anomalous politician who can, roughly speaking, do and say what he wants.
Trump’s appeal, in large part, depends upon him acting more outlandishly than his contemporaries. The behavior all relates back to the 2016 election when Trump stormed into the political conversation with his brash and unorthodox behavior. Trump set himself apart from a crowded GOP field – a field that failed to take Trump seriously – by consistently behaving in a headline-grabbing way. That’s what worked for him. Saying disparaging things about Carly Fiorina, Jeb Bush, or John Kasich. That’s what earned Trump the nomination. Speaking more brusquely about the southern border and John McCain and NAFTA. While the GOP field was adhering to the rigors of accepted decorum, Trump was speaking as if he were three beers deep at the local sports bar. And the voters loved it.
Trump’s personal conduct was so deviant relative to the Washington norms or the standards of his peer politicians that it became easier and easier to believe that Trump’s executive conduct would also be deviant relative to the Washington norms or the standards of his peer politicians – which is exactly what voters wanted at the time.
