The Wall Street Journal has urged its readers to take heed of William Barr’s recent warning about Donald Trump, and the former attorney general’s caution about what would happen if the former president won a second term in the White House.
Barr last week described Trump’s first term as a “horror show". He predicted Trump would fail to deliver on conservative policies, even if he did win the 2024 election.
The Journal wholeheartedly agreed.
“The rebuttal from the Trump establishment will be to cite his first term, but that record supports Mr. Barr’s point,” it wrote. “We also agree with many of Mr. Trump’s policies, and we backed them during his Presidency. But his most important policy victories were conventional GOP priorities delivered by people he now denounces as “RINOs.”
“A fuller account of Mr. Trump’s Presidency can wait for other days, but Mr. Barr’s warning is one that GOP voters deserve to hear,” it added. Republicans “have to decide if they want to let Democrats make their nominating choice for them, while ignoring Mr. Barr’s warning about the policy risks of a second Trump term.”

Then the US has had Presidents who are geniuses writing many books, but things go horribly wrong because they have the wrong beliefs. Nixon for example. There is a particularly wrong belief that is attached to one political party and not the other. It is guns, guns and more guns.

Timothy McVeigh, the right-wing terrorist who killed 168 people in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, cared about one issue above all others: guns. To him, guns were synonymous with freedom, and any government attempt to regulate them meant incipient tyranny.
“When it came to guns,” writes Jeffrey Toobin in “Homegrown,” his compelling new book about the Oklahoma City attack, “McVeigh did more than simply advocate for his own right to own and use firearms; he joined an ascendant political crusade, which grew more extreme over the course of his lifetime and beyond.”
Reading Toobin’s book, it’s startling to realize how much McVeigh’s cause has advanced in the decades since his 2001 execution. McVeigh hoped that blowing up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building would inspire an army of followers to make war on the government. This didn’t happen immediately, although, as the historian Kathleen Belew has written, there was a wave of militia and white supremacist violence in the bombing’s aftermath. But today, an often-inchoate movement of people who share many of McVeigh’s views is waging what increasingly looks like a low-level insurgency against the rest of us.
Not all mass shootings are ideologically motivated — far from it. But when there is an ideology involved, it’s usually a far-right one. “All the extremist-related murders in 2022 were committed by right-wing extremists of various kinds,” said a February report from the Anti-Defamation League. Sixty percent of these deaths came from two mass shootings, in Buffalo and Colorado Springs.
As you probably know by now, there was another mass shooting last weekend, at an outdoor mall in Allen, Texas. Though law enforcement has not identified a motive as of this writing, the killer reportedly wore a patch with the abbreviation for “right wing death squad,” a tribute to the Chilean fascist Augusto Pinochet that’s popular with groups like the Proud Boys. According to The New York Times, investigators are looking at a social media profile they believe belonged to the gunman, which includes praise for Hitler and “hate-filled rants against women and Black people.”
There was a time when a killing like this — which left at least eight victims dead, including more than one child — would have brought the news cycle to a halt and forced politicians to respond. When the white supremacist Dylann Roof murdered nine parishioners in a South Carolina church in 2015, it was so shocking that the governor at the time, Nikki Haley, removed the Confederate battle flag from the State House grounds.
As far as I can tell, there’s little sense that this latest shooting is a watershed moment that could spur political change. Instead, it’s the kind of regular occurrence we are expected to live with, lest

Quid pro quo: Clarence Thomas reversed his position after gifts and family payments
The Supreme Court justice switched sides on a landmark legal doctrine, satisfying his benefactors’ conservative advocacy machine.
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas changed his position on one of America’s most significant regulatory doctrines after his wife reportedly accepted secret payments from a shadowy conservative network pushing for the change. Thomas’ shift also came while he was receiving lavish gifts from a billionaire linked to other groups criticizing the same doctrine — which is now headed back to the high court.
The so-called “Chevron deference” doctrine stipulates that the executive branch — not the federal courts — has the power to interpret laws passed by Congress in certain circumstances. Conservatives for years have fought to overturn the doctrine, a move that would empower legal challenges to federal agency regulations on everything from climate policy to workplace safety to overtime pay.
Thomas wrote a landmark Supreme Court opinion upholding the doctrine in 2005, but began questioning it a decade later, before eventually renouncing his past opinion in 2020 and claiming that the doctrine itself might be unconstitutional. Now, Thomas could help overturn the doctrine in a new case the high court just agreed to hear next term.
Groups within the conservative legal movement funded by Leonard Leo’s dark money network and affiliated with Thomas’ billionaire benefactor Harlan Crow have organized a concerted effort in recent years to overturn Chevron. That campaign unfolded as they delivered gifts and cash to Thomas and his family in the lead-up to his shift on the doctrine.
In 2010, Crow bankrolled a dark money group led by Thomas’ wife, Ginni, that paid her $120,000. Leo was on the group’s board of directors. In 2012, Leo’s dark money network steered undisclosed consulting payments to Thomas’s wife. The Leo network has funded Republican politicians and several nonprofits pressing the Supreme Court to overturn the Chevron doctrine next term.
Crow, meanwhile, provided luxury travel to the Thomas family for two decades. The justice did not report those trips, and similarly failed to disclose that Crow bought his mother’s house and allowed her to keep living there rent free and paid his grandnephew’s boarding school tuition.
Last year, Crow’s wife joined the board of trustees at the Manhattan Institute, a conservative think tank that pressed the Supreme Court to hear the new case aimed at ending the Chevron doctrine.
Crow also co-founded the Club For Growth, a pro-business dark money group that issued a memo pining for the end of the Chevron doctrine.
Thomas abandoned his own stated principles on an issue at the heart of one of the conservative movement’s most significant crusades to limit government regulation.
At issue is the 1984 Supreme Court case Chevron U.S.A v. Natural Resources Defense Council, brought by environmental advocates to challenge the Reagan administration’s weakening of air pollution regulations.
The Supreme Court deferred to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) interpretation of the Clean Air Act, over the protests of environmentalists. The ruling was initially seen as a win for polluters, but it created the so-called Chevron doctrine, which became a landmark principle in administrative law, empowering federal agencies to interpret and implement statutes.

Trump’s Sexual Abuse Makes The Senator Want To Vote For Him Twice!
On Tuesday, a panel of nine jurors in New York unanimously found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation against E. Jean Carroll. The following day, at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire, he openly mocked his accuser to the laughter and applause of Republican voters in the audience. It was definitely disturbing, but unfortunately not necessarily surprising. Because why should Republican voters take Trump’s wrongdoing seriously when the party leaders never call him out? Let’s be honest, this shouldn’t be a difficult question. If someone asks you, do you stand by somebody who is found liable for sexual abuse? The answer should be some version of no. But outside of a handful of Republican lawmakers, they have, by and large, pretty much avoided criticizing the former president.
Take Senator Bill Hagerty of Tennessee. He responded to the verdict this week, saying that, quote, Trump has been amazing and his ability to weather these sorts of attacks. Attacks from who? A unanimous jury that found him liable for sexual abuse? Amazing. That’s amazing.
Then there’s Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama who said the ruling only makes him want to, quote, vote for Trump twice. You heard that right. Trump’s sexual abuse makes the senator want to vote for him twice.
Other Republicans took a defensive approach, responding with the same tired attacks on the integrity of the legal system. Senator Lindsey Graham declared that, quote, The New York legal system is off the rails. While Senator Marco Rubio called both the jury and the case, quote, a joke. I’m not sure what’s a joke to the senator about sexual abuse. Maybe he can explain that to us.
But the most common Republican refrain was indifference to a jury finding the de facto leader of their party liable for sexual abuse. Trump’s former vice president, Mike Pence, brushed off the verdict, saying it’s not, quote, where the American people are focused. Call me crazy, but I think more than a few people out there do care when a candidate has committed sexual abuse.
And here’s presidential candidate Nikki Haley just this morning when she was asked if this verdict undermines the party.
NIKKI HALEY: I have always said that anyone that feels like they have been sexually assaulted in any way should come forward and have their voice heard. I also think anyone that’s been accused should be able to defend themselves. I was not on the jury. I am not the judge. I think that both of them had their voices heard. There has been a verdict and there’s been an appeal.
Well, that was a pretty accurate summary of the legal process. I will certainly give her that. But what I didn’t hear was any kind of condemnation of someone who was just found liable for sexual abuse. Look, all of these Republicans are free to say something as simple as this. Donald Trump’s behavior is not what my party stands for. They are free. They have been free to do something about him. But I guess why start now?
The problem for them is no matter how hard they try to spin themselves as the party of family values to create fake controversies, that’s hard to do with a straight face, given that the de facto leader of their party has now been branded a sexual abuser.

In New York we have this dude Daniel Penny who killed an annoying subway rider—and the entire right wing is backing him up. This comes a week after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott promised to pardon a convicted murderer because the guy had only killed a BLM protester, after all.
The Durham Report is out, and it appears to be the usual Durham farrago of innuendo and speculation but without any real evidence of any wrongdoing. Nonetheless, Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama says people need to go to jail or we might as well cancel elections in this country. What?
Joe Biden has given up on his "no negotiations" position on the debt ceiling, which provoked a growing mountain of crackpot demands from Republicans.
Elon Musk's latest is to compare George Soros to X-Men supervillain Magneto.
Oh, and I almost forgot about Rudy. He's being sued for what? Sexual assault and selling off pardons?

Former National Security Advisor John Bolton on Tuesday said that foreign leaders saw former President Donald Trump as a "laughing fool" and rejected his ex-boss's claims that he could have stopped Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine had he still been in office last year.
During an interview on CNN's "This Morning," Bolton — an experienced diplomat and defense hawk who served under Trump from April 2018 to September 2019 — pushed back against assertions that the former president made about Ukraine last week as he participated in the network's controversial town hall. While speaking with journalist Kaitlan Collins, Trump said that Russia would not have invaded Ukraine had he been in the Oval Office and also said that he could "settle" the conflict in 24 hours if voters send him back to office — both highly questionable claims for a war the US is not a direct participant in.
Bolton, while speaking with Collins and journalist Poppy Harlow, quickly rejected such talk.
"Trump has this impression that foreign leaders, especially adversaries, hold him in high regard — that he's got a good relationship with Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong Un," Bolton said of the leaders of China, Russia, and North Korea, respectively.
"In fact, the exact opposite is true," he continued. "I have been in those rooms with him when he met with those leaders. I believe they think he's a laughing fool and the idea that somehow his presence in office would have deterred Putin is flatly wrong."
Bolton then said that if Trump had won reelection in 2020, the former president's push to weaken NATO would have aided Russia in their quest to take over Ukraine.
"If anything, if Trump had won a second term and done what I think he intended to do which is get out of NATO, Putin would have just waited and let him do it," he said. "Even the weakening of NATO would have it made a lot easier for the Russians to have prevailed."
Bolton, who served as US ambassador to the United Nations under former President George W. Bush, has been a huge critic of Trump since leaving the administration. The diplomat, while on CBS News just last month, said that it was a "big mistake, politically" for the GOP to continue aligning itself with Trump headed into 2024.

Why Trump Wants U.S. to Default on Debt
Trump urged Republicans to allow a default “unless they get everything they want. Do not fold!!!”
Lest you have any doubt, the three exclamation points are Trump’s. You could be excused for thinking he wants a default. He loves chaos.
But he also has a purely self-serving reason to seek an economic catastrophe. You don’t need to be a stable genius to know that a bad economy typically hurts the incumbent in a presidential race. And Trump is desperate to get the immunity from prosecution that being elected president would provide him. He’s terrified of what’s coming from Special Counsel Jack Smith. So he’ll apparently nuke the world economy to protect himself.
His MAGA minions in the House of Representatives also understand that voters’ first instinct for an economic crisis is to blame the incumbent president. But just in case that point was missed by the few GOP representatives who still worry a bit about what’s best for the country, Trump’s Truth Social post on Friday was sending them a message. He might as well have written, I’ll come after you if you vote to raise the debt ceiling.
The dynamics of the House Republican Conference — with a small number of the most Trumpy members able to disrupt or end McCarthy’s speakership — make it difficult for McCarthy to give an inch in negotiations, especially now with Trump himself piping in. Which means that the risk that no agreement will be reached is very real. The American people would be nothing but collateral damage to Trump.

Trump had the third-biggest primary deficit growth, 5.2% of GDP, behind only George W. Bush (11.7%) and Abraham Lincoln (9.4%). Bush, of course, not only passed a big tax cut, as Trump has, but also launched two wars, which greatly inflated the defense budget. Lincoln had to pay for the Civil War. By contrast, Trump’s wars have been almost entirely of the political variety.

Embracing extreme positions is nothing new for Trump: Since launching his 2016 campaign by calling Mexican immigrants “rapists” and then pledging to ban Muslims from entering the country, he has promoted divisive policies, made inflammatory comments and prompted constitutional showdowns with Congress and the courts. But a return to the White House, in Trump’s own articulation, would be his chance to take revenge on his political opponents and push even further on his most polarizing programs.
The hardening of Trump’s stances comes as he has been operating for more than two years without the official apparatus of the White House, putting fewer gatekeepers and layers of review between him and the public. It also follows a long list of grievances he has accumulated from his eight years in politics.
To experts who have reviewed his proposals, Trump is sketching out the contours of a second term potentially more chaotic than his first. Critics across the political spectrum have voiced alarm at his increasingly menacing rhetoric. But Trump’s most loyal supporters have relished his combative speeches and followed him in espousing harsher stances.
“I was a Democrat before,” said Greg Bouchicas, a construction business owner from Plaistow, N.H., who came to hear Trump speak in Manchester last month, which he said was his first political event ever. “The fake FISA warrant on Trump tried to take the election from him and failed,” he said, referring to the court-approved surveillance of some of Trump associates’ contacts with Russians in 2016. Bouchicas raised his arms and extended two fingers on both hands when Trump spoke about rebuilding the economy.
In the storyline Trump presents, he is always the victim, but so are his supporters: The shared experience of suffering through conflicts brings them closer and strengthens their bond, according to Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a historian at New York University and the author of “Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present.”
“When authoritarian leaders lose office, they come back, like, 10 times worse — they never get less extreme, they always get more extreme,” Ben-Ghiat said. “January 6 was a profoundly radicalizing event for the base, for the GOP and for Trump himself, because even assaulting the Capitol you could get away with. Disney has lost their "family friendly" and "kid safe" expectations. Teachers have been getting fired
for showing kids movies like Strange World and they're now sending kids home with permission
slips to see Disney movies in school to cover their asses.
Except for Guardians of the Galaxy which is doing moderately OK for a Marvel flick, and White Men
Can't Panther last year, they've put out one losing movie after another for going on 2 years now
(I'm not counting the few winners put out by FOX Studios, who Disney is rewarding by downsizing,
and SONY pictures).
Indiana Jones 5 is already hated by critics and is going to be the woke disaster that everybody
was predicting that it would be.

Disney's last two live remakes went straight to Disney+ because they knew they'd bomb in the
theaters. They're stuck putting The Little Mermaid in theaters because of their identity

My recommendation to Disney, if they're really pro-business, is to start ACTING like a business
and stop acting like a band of coffee house baristas from Seattle.
And fire Kathleen Kennedy already.

To be clear, I am writing this as a pollster, not as a politician or partisan.
Here’s the bottom line. As it gets closer to the summer of 2023, I would rate the Democrats as more likely to again take/keep the White House. They might even hold on to the Senate and re-take the House.
This is a tough message to deliver to the Republican faithful at a time when inflation is way up, millions have crossed the border illegally, China and Russia both pose true threats to international stability, and crime has spiraled in many areas of the nation.
Sure, events and issues would seemingly favor the 2024 Republican nominee for president. But consider this. On Oct. 25, 2022, immediately following a Wall Street Journal poll showing Republicans up by two points in the “Generic ballot” midterm contest, my firm, InsiderAdvantage, also showed Republicans leading Democrats by four points, well within the WSJ poll’s margin of error. Sixteen national polls followed ours in the RealClearPolitics average with only two of the polls showing Democrats leading and one showed a tie. The other 13 polls had Republicans ahead. CNN had the same four-point advantage our survey showed. ABC News/Washington Post along with CBS News had the GOP with a two-point lead. NPR had it at a three-point GOP lead.
For whatever reason, only a few national pollsters chose to survey the battleground Senate contests in the last few weeks of the 2022 midterms. Many of us who did, such as one of the most accurate over the past four cycles, Robert Cahaly of Trafalgar, showed Republican candidates in competitive states trending ahead, reflecting what the many national organizations were indicating in their generic ballot polls.
But the building “Red Wave” disappeared on Election Day. Sure, as pollsters we will be examining our data and weighting for the next cycle. But it may be that for Republicans, opinion surveys, whether suggesting a win or a loss, won’t matter. A loss is more likely regardless.
Why?
In part because there exists a not-so-subtle Democratic machine that goes far beyond politicians and now includes significant segments of corporations, media and “nonpartisan” governmental entities.

In the political forest, the answer is no if the tree is Republican or conservative. This is by far and away the biggest obstacle Republicans face in having a fair chance of winning in 2024.
While Fox News remains the dominant cable news network, it cannot possibly serve to counterbalance the three broadcast news networks along with CNN and MSNBC. Even with Newsmax thrown into the mix, the “conservative” broadcast and online media, based on total viewership and readership, is overwhelmed day in and day out. Other than Rupert Murdoch, conservative-leaning financiers have either lacked the will or have been stymied at forming consortiums to purchase or challenge the “legacy” media. And Republican operatives seem hellbent on spending all their money in short-burst primary and general election cycles. They just assume that everyone knows their view of the new

It was an absurd statement. But in a twisted way, Trump was right. As his administrations first term comes to an end, Black Americans—indeed, all Americans— should in one respect be thankful to him. He has held up a mirror to American society, and it has reflected back a grotesque image that many people had until now refused to see: an image not just of the racism still coursing through the country, but also of the reflex to deny that reality. Though it was hardly his intention, no president has caused more Americans to stop denying the existence of racism than Donald Trump.

Note to GOP: More mental health funding won't stop mass shootings
Now that the “thoughts and prayers” mantra has begun to curdle on the lips of even the most stiff-necked opponents of simple, sensible gun safety measures, many have retreated to convenient fallback positions. One of the handiest involves some evocation of “mental health.”
Spend a little money on therapists, in other words, and we’ll avoid the next Uvalde, the next Santa Fe, the next Allen. We’ll likely identify the next mass murderer; we’ll get him help before he heads for the gun store on his 18th birthday, credit card at the ready. Hire more school counselors, and they’ll be able to distinguish between the nascent shooter wearing black and the sullen kid sitting in the back of the class whose other choice of school attire was in the washing machine that day.
Maybe so, although most studies show it’s not that easy.
Predictably, Gov. Greg Abbott is among the more vociferous “mental health” cheerleaders, even as he worked overtime during the just-concluded legislative session to thwart red-flag laws and other common-sense gun-safety measures that have made a difference in other states.
Here’s Abbott, in an interview with Fox News Sunday less than 24 hours after a gunman wielding an assault rifle slaughtered eight people at an Allen outlet mall: “And what Texas is doing in a big-time way, we are working to address that anger and violence by going to its root cause, which is addressing the mental health problems behind it."
“People want a quick solution,” the governor added, “The long-term solution here is to address the mental health issue.”
The short-term, one-word response to such prattle is not printable in a family newspaper. What politicians like Abbott are doing “in a big-time way” is avoiding a life-and-death issue that’s hitting close to home for more and more people.
Of course, we need to spend money on mental health. The governor’s right about that. There’s not a person in this state who wouldn’t benefit from wise counseling and empathic therapy. More than 3 million Texans are living with mental illness, while more than 750,000 have had serious thoughts of suicide, according to data compiled by the National Alliance on Mental Illness Texas, or NAMI.
Lawmakers this session did budget substantial increases in funding for mental health including $2.3 billion for state hospital construction and inpatient care, which we hope will shorten the time people found incompetent to stand trial languish in jails without adequate mental health care. Another initiative, the Texas Child Health Access Through Telemedicine, connects children in school to therapists. It got a boost of nearly $100 million over two years. We applaud these investments.
Unfortunately, even with these big budget numbers, those who need sustained mental health assistance will still struggle to get it in this state. Texas in 2022 ranked near the bottom of the 50 states in access to mental health services, according to Mental Health America, a nonprofit advocacy group. The organization’s annual “State of Mental Health in America” gave Texas an overall ranking of 46 in 2023. We ranked 50th on “access to care,” a category that includes, as the Chronicle reported recently, access to insurance and treatment, among other mental health criteria.
More than one in five adults with mental illness are uninsured in Texas, making it the worst state in the nation for mental health care, according to a new Forbes Advisor study. It’s no coincidence that Texas is one of 10 states that have refused to expand Medicaid through the Affordable Care Act, a simple act that would give nearly 1.5 million Texans access to mental health services, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation report.
“Medicaid is the single-largest funder of mental health services in the country, but Texas loses out by refusing Medicaid to most adults,” writes Anne Dunkelberg, senior fellow with the nonprofit public-interest group Every Texan. “Often mislabeled, Medicaid expansion isn’t

Team Trump Scrambles to Unmask the Feds Investigating Him
The former president wants to “immediately” purge the Justice Department’s ranks of the officials and agents who’ve led the criminal probes into his actions
In recent months, the former president has asked close advisers, including at least one of his personal attorneys, if “we know” all the names of senior FBI agents and Justice Department personnel who have worked on the federal probes into him. That’s according to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter and another person briefed on it.
Trump has then privately discussed that should he return to the White House, it is imperative his new Department of Justice “quickly” and “immediately” purge the FBI and DOJ’s ranks of these officials and agents who’ve led the Trump-related criminal investigations, the sources recount. The ex-president has of course dubbed all such probes as illegitimate “witch hunts,” and is now campaigning for the White House on a platform of “retribution” and cleaning house.
Separately, the twice-impeached former president has been saying for many months that on “day one” of his potential second term, he wants FBI director Christopher Wray “out” of the bureau, according to another source familiar with the matter and two people close to Trump. It’s an ironic turn, given that Trump appointed Wray in 2017.
But in the years since, Trump came to deeply distrust Wray. By the end of 2020, Trump was venting to senior administration officials that he would make it a top priority to replace Wray “next year,” blasting the director for not wholesale purging the FBI of non-Trump-loyalists. Trump lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden, and thus didn’t get his chance to fire Wray in 2021.
During some of the conversations this year, including at Trump’s Florida club Mar-a-Lago, some of Trump’s close political allies told him that they are working on figuring out the identities of the FBI and DOJ staff and forming lists, two of the sources relay to Rolling Stone.
However, others have complained that the feds aren’t making it easy for them.
In December 2022, the conservative nonprofit Judicial Watch — run by prominent Trump ally Tom Fitton — filed a Freedom of Information Act request demanding information about “all employees hired by or detailed to the office of Special Counsel Jack Smith.” In April, the Justice Department denied the request on the ground that it was an “unwarranted invasion of personal privacy” and that it would “interfere with enforcement proceedings.”
“One can only conclude, after seeing the uproar over the anti-Trump, partisan Mueller operation, that the Garland Justice Department has something to hide about Jack Smith and his prosecutors again targeting Trump and other Republicans with unprecedented investigations,” Fitton said at the time.
On Friday, Fitton told Rolling Stone that the DOJ is still “stonewalling” him and his group on the identities: “I don’t understand why it is that the names of prosecutors involved in a criminal investigation are secret. The Durham report shows it’s important we know who’s working there. We don’t want Social Security numbers or personal phone numbers, but certainly senior leaders and others who are pursuing this need to be disclosed.
“We were able to get hiring material for the Mueller investigations, interviews applications and stuff like that,” he added.
Fitton said his group is still seeking the information administratively, but that “??this is the type of lawsuit we typically would pursue.”
Other developments have made it harder for MAGA allies to create a comprehensive list of whom to potentially fire. Prior to Smith’s appointment, full names — in official DOJ email addresses — would appear in emails sent by Justice Department lawyers working on the Trump-related probes, to attorneys for subjects and likely targets of the investigations. But in the time since Special Counsel Smith started overseeing the probes last year, such emails began at times only showing initials for multiple DOJ addresse

Fact Check: Did Donald Trump Promise to Eliminate National Debt?
Trump said in 2016 that he would be able to get rid of the debt (more than $19 trillion at the time) "over a period of eight years."
This, of course, assumed that Trump would stay in the White House for more than one term, an ambition that didn't materialize.
During his term, Trump instead added $7.8 trillion to the national debt, far from the elimination he had hoped for.
Already a mammoth task when he took the presidency in 2016, it's not clear how Trump would have managed to eliminate the debt having added nearly $8 trillion to it during his first term alone.
Therefore, although it's not unfair to say that Trump did plan to eliminate the debt and failed to do so, the terms of the former president's claim are for 8 years, not 4.

The Real Reason Republicans Want to Give Tax Breaks for Embryos
Wisconsin lawmakers are trying to "clarify" the state's 1849 abortion ban in a bid to make the wildly unpopular and anachronistic law palatable to modern voters
Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature introduced a package of bills this week to “clarify” the state’s abortion ban, 174 years after it became law. The 1849 ban, which criminalizes abortion in every circumstance, except to save the pregnant person’s life, went back into effect last June after 50 years of obsolescence.
It’s a deeply unpopular law: By margins of 2 to 1, voters said it should be repealed in every single county where the question was on the ballot this April. (In a statewide judicial election held the same day, the pro-choice candidate — who, it is widely assumed, will vote to strike the ban down when it is challenged at the state Supreme Court next term — won by 11 points.)
But Republicans in Wisconsin can’t seem to grasp this obvious truth. Rather than repeal the 1849 ban, as Democrats have proposed, a group of GOP lawmakers — led by 32-year old Sen. Romaine Quinn — touted a total of four bills they hope will make the pre-Civil War law more palatable to modern Wisconsinites. Included in the package is an offer that has become trendy among antiabortion ideologues: tax breaks for embryos.
LRB-2486 would allow parents to claim an exemption on their tax returns for “unborn children for whom a fetal heartbeat has been detected.” Co-sponsor Rep. Donna Rozar made the proposal’s intent crystal clear: The bill, she said, “recognizes an unborn child as a distinct human being prior to birth by allowing the child to be claimed as a dependent.” The point isn’t to support Wisconsin families — the point is to change the definition of when life begins as part of an effort to enshrine in Wisconsin law the dangerous and dehumanizing concept of “fetal personhood.”
It’s all part of an effort to extend Constitutional rights to fertilized eggs — a legal theory that simultaneously revokes the rights of the individuals carrying those pregnancies.
Wisconsin Republicans aren’t the first to try this: Georgia’s Department of Revenue announced in August “any unborn child with a detectable human heartbeat” could be claimed as a dependent on state tax returns. The representative behind Georgia’s LIFE Act, which created the tax break, later admitted in a leaked video that the credit was all part of a gambit to get the Supreme Court to recognize fetal personhood: “We’re going to take this to the highest court in the land.”
The consequences of a ruling recognizing fetal personhood are difficult to overstate: The moment that an embryo is recognized as a person with rights, virtually any behavior that poses any kind of risk to a pregnancy can be criminalized or litigated. In one infamous case, an Alabama woman was charged with manslaughter for losing her pregnancy after she was shot in the stomach by another person. (That case was dismissed after a public outcry.)

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s production cut, which takes 1 percent of the world’s oil supply off the market, failed to accomplish its intended effect of boosting prices.
Saudi Arabia is desperately trying to drive up oil prices so the government can make its budget; whether it succeeds will decide Texas’ property taxes too.
After an uncharacteristically contentious OPEC oil cartel meeting Sunday, Saudi Arabia said it would take 1 million barrels of crude off the market every day beginning in July to prop up global prices. That’s in addition to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, including Russia, agreeing to extend existing cuts into 2024.
The Brent global benchmark price for oil initially jumped 2.5 percent but dropped back to Friday’s closing price of roughly $75 a barrel. Analysts believe Saudi Arabia needs $81 a barrel to cover government expenses, which leaves the kingdom in an awkward position if prices don’t rise soon.
Texas’ government revenues are also vulnerable to low oil prices.
About 38 percent of the state’s economic activity in recent years has been tied to locating and drilling new oil and gas wells. Texas’ $33 billion budget surplus came partly from sales taxes on drilling activity and direct taxes on oil coming out of the ground at prices above $100 a barrel, as they were early last year.
When prices drop, drilling activity slows and so does tax revenue. Different institutions have tried to stabilize oil flows and prices for a long time but with varying success.
From the Great Depression to the early 1970s, the Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates the state’s oil and gas industry, helped stabilize oil prices by assigning production quotas. As Texas oil production shrank and Middle East oil began to dominate world markets, OPEC took over the role and has tried to manage global supply ever since.
As the world’s largest producer, Saudi Arabia has been the de facto OPEC leader. But the cartel’s power has waned as a brash Saudi crown prince assumed control, Texas emerged again as an oil exporter and Russia invaded Ukraine.
Oil traders, who determine prices by buying and selling contracts for future sales, shrugged off Saudi’s decision to take 1 percent of the world’s oil supply off the market. In the past, such a production cut would have triggered price jumps.
Last year, when wealthy countries began economically isolating Russia, traders drove prices up to $120 a barrel amid fear of losing 10 percent of world supply. But the United States and the European Union instead put a price cap on Russian oil to limit profits. Russia kept exporting, and the price cap drove down prices.
OPEC analysts, meanwhile, expected Chinese demand to bounce back this summer after the government lifted COVID-19 controls. But the world’s second-largest economy has not grown as expected, leaving oil exporters and traders disappointed.
Finally, many economists predict worldwide inflation and high interest rates will put the U.S. and other major economies into a recession in the second half of 2023. Traders know economic slowdowns decrease oil demand, reduce prices and create oil gluts.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s unilateral production cut was insufficient to overcome oil traders’ expectations that supply and demand are balanced. Something else must happen before prices return to the $85-a-barrel mark and make the industry and OPEC happy.
