Quote:Huh? ISW can't assess wha kind of system would be effective against drones, helicopters and fixed-wing air support? Or is it that they can't figure out what would work against a barrage of drones, cruise missiles and hypersonic missiles?
Originally posted by second:
Russian sources provided explanations for claimed Russian successes during the June 8 attacks, praising Russian forces’ effective use of electronic warfare (EW) systems, air support, and landmines against Ukrainian forces. Multiple Russian sources reported that Russian EW severely interfered with Ukrainian command and control signals, GPS-enabled devices, UAV controls.[12] Russian sources reported that Ukrainian forces had insufficient air defense in the Orikhiv sector, that Russian forces operated with an “unprecedented” amount of rotary wing air support, and that Russian aviation was able to return to a high level of activity after not actively engaging in combat operations since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022.[13] Continuous Russian missile and drone attacks against Kyiv and critical Ukrainian infrastructure may have fixed Ukraine’s more advanced air defense systems away from the frontline, although ISW cannot assess which systems would be effective against the kinds of air support missions Russian aircraft were flying.
Quote:
ISW’s previous assessments that Russian air and missile attacks were not setting conditions to defend against the Ukrainian counter-offensive may thus have been inaccurate.
Then they were STUPID. EVERYONE could see- and was commenting on- the fact that Russia had ramped up its targeting of rail lines, ammo depots, fuel depots, and air defense insallations for the past 3 weeks at least, with "massive" (that seems to be the word most often used recently) drone, missile and bombs strikes. Even Military Summary Channel, which has a definite bent towards Ukraine.
Quote:echelon defense. Wasn't gonna post about it bc it would have taken too much time to explain. The other thing that Russians do is create "crumple zones" ... they take areas of open field which Ukrainian army has to re-take, Once the Ukrainian army is in a relatively undefendable position, Russian troops fall back and Russian artillery, drones etc open up.
Russian sources also praised at length their claimed defensive success using layered field fortifications and landmines, with Major General Popov stating that Russian minefields played a “very important role” in defeating the initial Ukrainian advance in the early hours of June 8.[14] CNN additionally reported that an anonymous US official said that Russian landmines degraded Ukrainian armored vehicles.[15]
Quote:
Russian forces appear to have executed their formal tactical defensive doctrine in response to the Ukrainian attacks southwest of Orikhiv. Russian doctrine for a defending motorized rifle battalion calls for a first echelon of troops to repel or slow attacking forces with minefields, fortifications, and strongpoints, with a second echelon of forces counterattacking against an enemy breakthrough.[16] Russian forces apparently operated in this fashion in this sector – Ukrainian forces penetrated the initial defensive lines; Russian forces pulled back to a second line of fortifications; and Russian reserves subsequently counterattacked to retake the initial line of defenses.[17] This maneuver is a regular feature of defensive operations and has been executed by both Ukrainian and Russian forces throughout the war. Early control of terrain changes day to day should thus not be misconstrued as the overall result of a wider attack.

There are several ways to interpret that last statement, but in the context of Ukrainian attacker/Russian defender, I would say that it means that even if Ukrainian troops advance a few or even a few tens of kilometers, that doesn't mean they will be victor

Tick tock applies here. It stands for a countdown, just as it did in the countdown until Trump is impeached thread, which he was, twice. Another thread was until Trump was indicted. Well, now he has been. And Tuesday next week, he will be arrested again on different charges. And I'll give you a hint, there is more to come after that. Too funny...
In the Ukraine thread, it represents a countdown to when things get so bad for Russia, you can no longer blow it off as lies. You will be forced to acknowledge Ukraine kicked Putin, Russias' ass. That Russia lost.

Quote:A Russian law passed days before the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine could be a "smoking gun" in proving Russia's involvement in the incident, according to an expert.
Originally posted by SIGNYM:
I think, FYI, that Kiev had been threatening the Kakhova dam for over a year, discussing how to mine it and even taking a few practice HIMARS shots at it. That's the reason why Surovikin withdrew troops to the eastern side of the Dneiper- he was afraid that Kiev was going to flood the area. And Kiev had been saying for WEEKS that they were going to launch an attack that would confuse and panic the Russian military.
On May 30, a week before the dam's collapse, the Russian government approved a law aimed at "ensuring the safety of hydraulic structures" in the Ukrainian regions it proclaimed to have annexed in September 2022—the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, in Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia.
The legislation states that until January 1, 2028, investigations into accidents at hydro-technical structures that occurred as a result of military operations, sabotage and terrorist activities are prohibited. The decree was signed by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and came into effect on the day it was published.
Kremlin Playbook
Keir Giles, senior consulting fellow at the Chatham House think tank's Russia and Eurasia program, said the May 30 legislation follows the Kremlin's playbook, which seeks "to pretend that it operates according to some semblance of legality."
"Russia has a perverse fascination with performative legalization of its most horrific crimes...it repeatedly puts in place in advance laws that give preemptive excuses for its actions," Giles told Newsweek.
"Sometimes this can give an indication of what is to come," said Giles, pointing to legislation on mass burials that was updated by Russia ahead of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and came into effect on February 1, 2022—weeks before the war began.
"So in the case of the destruction of the Kakhovka dam, the passing a week beforehand of this bizarrely specific law covering precisely those circumstances is indeed a clear indication of Russian intent," Giles added.
Newsweek reached out to the Russian Foreign Ministry via email for comment.
Anders Åslund, an economist and adjunct professor at Georgetown University, Washington, DC, said the May 30 decree "only concludes what we already knew."
"Russian propagandists advocated blowing up the dam. Ukrainian officials announced last fall that the Russians had mined both the dam and the connected tunnels in October-November 2022," Åslund, who has served as an economic adviser to the governments of both Russia and Ukraine, told Newsweek.
"Several explosions were recorded, which show that they were underwater, while the Russians claimed that the Ukrainians had bombed it from the air, which seems close to impossible for technical reasons. The explosions occurred on the Russian side.
"The Russians followed up blowing up several smaller dams — recorded by the Ukrainians. And now you have this law," he said, adding: "The evidence seems overwhelming that it was the Russians who did it."

Quote:Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on June 9 that Russia will begin deploying tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus in July 2023.[84] Putin met with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in Sochi, Russia, and stated that the necessary Belarusian storage facilities will finish construction on July 7 and 8, after which Russia will begin transferring tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus. Putin emphasized that the deployment of Russian weapons on Belarusian territory is proceeding according to plan. Putin’s announcement does not represent an escalation in prior Russian nuclear weapons rhetoric, and Russia remains unlikely to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, as ISW has previously assessed.[85] Putin’s announcement is also very unlikely to require a change in NATO’s nuclear posture.

There are three primary defenses of Donald Trump coming from Trumptards:
• Trump didn't sell any of the documents, destroy or alter any documents, or give them away. So how bad can it be?
• Hillary did it too.
• DOJ and the FBI are corrupt and have been weaponized against Trump.
None of these even remotely address the actual charges against Trump: that he took classified documents with him when he left the White House and then actively withheld them even after National Archives and Records Administration and the FBI repeatedly demanded their return.
But Republicans just don't care. They don't care about January 6, 2021. They don't care about Trump’s Big Lie that he won in 2020. They don't care that Trump tried to extort Ukraine for dirt on Joe Biden. No matter what, Trump is being unfairly victimized. That's the alpha and omega. The facts don't matter and never will.
Trump's lawyers quit because he is guilty and now they know it from evidence in the indictment:
Jim Trusty and John Rowley, who helmed Trump’s Washington, D.C.-based legal team for months and were seen frequently at the federal courthouse, indicated they would no longer represent Trump in matters being investigated and prosecuted by special counsel Jack Smith, who is probing both the documents matter and efforts by Trump to subvert the 2020 election.

In the fall of 1968, Donald J. Trump received a timely diagnosis of bone spurs in his heels that led to his medical exemption from the military during Vietnam. For 50 years, the details of how the exemption came about, and who made the diagnosis, have remained a mystery until now! Two daughters of a New York podiatrist say that 50 years ago their father diagnosed President Donald Trump with bone spurs in his heels as a favor to the doctor's landlord, Fred Trump.

The world would be a better if Trump had to risk death fleeing to Canada to avoid the draft.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday announced he will start deploying tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus on July 7-8, which falls days before a NATO summit in neighboring Lithuania.
The timing of the announcement was not lost on some officials, including Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
"This is nothing but a crude game of intimidation, trying to bully Europe into submission," Tsikhanouskaya tweeted. "We can't let dictators get away with their nuclear blackmail."

If Russian tactical nukes in Belarus are a threat to Europe, what are American nuclear weapons in Europe?
Quote:
The United States has deployed nuclear weapons at NATO bases in Western Europe since the 1950s, when Cold War tensions were mounting with the Soviet Union. The weapons were first transferred to the United Kingdom in 1954, and later to Germany, Italy, France, Turkey, the Netherlands, Greece, and Belgium...
Today, U.S. tactical nuclear weapons remain at six bases in five NATO member countries, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey. The UK and France have their own nuclear forces and no longer host U.S. weapons.

By the way, Russia has been threatening to nuke the West since it first got nukes. To dissuade Russia from turning its threats into reality, the US has spent over $10 trillion on nukes. Because Russia keeps making newer and bizarre threats to nuke the West, the US is projected to spend a total of $634 billion over the 2021–2030 period on nukes. Ukraine would be doing the West a huge favor if it can stop Russia from making these endless threats to nuke the West.

But since THUR might actually be that stupid, I'm gonna explain to make it pellucidly clear.
If we see nukes positioned in Belarus as a threat to Europe, then the USSR, and now Russia, would have seen western nukes positioned in Europe as threats.
So if we want to point fingers at "who started it", clearly the USA started threatening first by positioning nukes in many nations in Europe, and Russia's action is just a decades-delayed response.

Russian milbloggers continue to highlight reported superior Russian electronic warfare (EW) capabilities as key to disrupting Ukrainian attacks. Russian milbloggers claimed that Russian EW units are disrupting Ukrainian communications as well as aviation units and alleged that some Ukrainian mechanized groups were not prepared to fight without communications or with suppressed GPS.[10] Another milblogger claimed that Ukrainian forces attempted their own “electronic counter measures” against Russian reconnaissance and control capabilities in areas where there are Ukrainian assaults but that these attempts were unsuccessful.[11] Russian forces have reportedly successfully improved their EW use throughout the invasion of Ukraine.[12]
Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces have tactical advantages in conducting assaults at night due to Western-provided equipment with superior night optics systems. A prominent Russian milblogger claimed that Ukrainian forces are launching assaults at night because Western-provided equipment provides Ukrainian forces with “excellent” night vision optics.[13] Zaporizhia Oblast occupation official Vladimir Rogov also claimed that night assaults allow Ukrainian forces to more effectively use Western-provided equipment.[14] Russian sources have widely claimed that Ukrainian forces have started or intensified assaults at night in recent days, and Ukrainian forces may be increasingly leveraging the advantages provided by Western systems.[15]
Russian sources continue to highlight the role of scarce military district-level Russian TOS-1A thermobaric artillery systems against Ukrainian attacks, though Ukrainian forces destroyed at least two of these key systems in recent days. Geolocated footage published on June 8 and 9 confirms that Ukrainian forces have used Western precision munitions (reportedly the Paladin 155mm artillery system) to destroy at least two Russian TOS-1A thermobaric artillery systems – highly destructive but scarce artillery assets controlled at the Russian military district level – in western and eastern Zaporizhia Oblast during the Ukrainian counteroffensive.[16] The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) highlighted the role of Russian thermobaric artillery systems in striking Ukrainian positions on the western Zaporizhia Oblast frontline.[17] A Russian milblogger claimed that Russian thermobaric artillery units have consistently fired on Ukrainian forces on the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast administrative border and in western Zaporizhia Oblast for the past several days and characterized the units as essential to repelling Ukrainian frontal assaults.[18] Russian forces’ apparent reliance on specific artillery assets is noteworthy, as precision Ukrainian strikes on these systems could potentially complicate Russian defensive capabilities and Russian forces are unlikely to possess enough TOS-1A systems to provide the same level of fire support all along the front line.
Ukrainian forces are currently attempting an extraordinarily difficult tactical operation – a frontal assault against prepared defensive positions, further complicated by a lack of air superiority – and these initial assaults should not be extrapolated to predict all Ukrainian operations. Ukrainian forces are unsurprisingly taking casualties in initial attacks against some of the best-prepared Russian forces in Ukraine. However, initial attacks – and particularly selected footage that Russian sources are intentionally disseminating and highlighting – are not representative of all Ukrainian operations. The Russian military remains dangerous and Ukrainian forces certainly face a hard fight, but Ukraine has not yet committed the vast majority of its counteroffensive forces and Russian defenses are not uniformly strong along all sectors of the front line.

So if we want to point fingers at "who started it", clearly the USA started threatening first by positioning nukes in many nations in Europe, and Russia's action is just a decades-delayed response.
Capisce?
Try for once in your life, Signym, to understand the difference between using words threatening to nuke everybody and NOT threatening to nuke anybody. I don't think you will get the subtleties because then you would realize what Russia has been doing wrong since its first above-ground A-bomb tests.

Indeed.
The clock ticks for Ukraine and NATO.
According to people who analyze such things, the USA military didn't send its older Bradley fighting vehicles, it sent its newest. And the USA sent its latest version of Patriot missiles. Now the USA is promising MORE multi-billion dollars-worth of Patriot missiles and M777 rockets. (And we probably sent latest-version M777 howitzers and HIMARS too.)
Germany didn't send their older Leopard tanks, the sent their latest version. UK didn't send their oldest version of Challenger 2 tanks, they apparently sent their newest. F-sixteens (apparently a few keys on this keyboard just bonked including the number six) have been promised. And, based on the # of armored vehicles destroyed so far, usa and NATO have sent in far more weapns than we admit. We (USA, NATO) are hemorrhaging weapons into Ukraine.
NATO will meet on Monday to decide what to do with Ukraine. They could decide to speed up Ukraine's accession into NATO. They could decide to send in eastern European (i.e. Polish) troops, which will invetibaly lead to USA boots on the ground. They could just decide to empty their armories and treasuries into Ukraine.
The funny thing is, I have a sneaking suspicion this is all according to Russia's plan (or one them, anyway. Russia apparently doesn't have "a" plan, it has a number of contingencies.)
Russia knows it's not fighting "Ukraine".
To all intents and purposes, Ukraine doesn't even exist anymore except as a source of bodies for NATOs proxy-war weapons. It has no production, it collects no taxes, it would cease to operate the moment the cash flow stopped.
It's easy to see how Russia could demilitarize Ukraine. It was harder to see how Russia could demilitarize NATO. But with NATOs help, it can be done. All NATO needs to do is keep bleeding more and more into its proxy battlefield. Do you recall how Russia refused to close off the cauldron around Bakhmut? Ukraine's obssession with Bakhmut - sending in more and more (mostly untrained) infantry - allowed Russia to successfully conduct what Russians literally called "Operation Meatgrinder'
Russia KNOWS it's fighting NATO. And I suspect that Ukraine is Bakhmut writ large. As long as NATO keeps sending in weapons at a rate slow enough for them to be destroyed, Russia will slowly demilitarize NATO as well as Ukraine. And that seems to be the case. one of the worst things that coul

As Russia's military grapples with Ukraine's latest attempt at reclaiming occupied land, Skabeyeva, host of the Russian TV program 60 Minutes, offered one solution to bolster its military.
During a recent episode of the show, she called for millions of Chinese troops to join the Russia-Ukraine war. Skabeyeva pointed to the recent battles in Russia's Belgorod region where Putin's forces have reportedly struggled in recent weeks as to why Moscow needs more soldiers.
"Don't dismiss two or three million Chinese soldiers. That's what is needed now. I look at Belgorod region and think how much we lack a Chinese people's liberation army," she said.
Despite this call from Skabeyeva, China has not indicated that it plans to send troops into Russia—which would be viewed as a massive escalation of the conflict.

Besides Russia, there is one other country that constantly threatens to nuke the World. That is North Korea, which is impoverished compared to South Korea. Why poorer? For the same reasons as Russia is poor compared to the EU. North Korea is belligerent, spends too much on nukes, and can't run its economy worth a goddamn. Comrade signym uses two types of debate style. One is Whataboutism and the other is, Fallacy of relative privation. Each is a way of avoiding acknowledging a truth within the others post. Can you guess the style she is using here?
The fallacy of relative privation is a way of dismissing or minimizing an argument by claiming that there are more important or worse problems to deal with. It is a type of informal fallacy and a red herring or distraction from the relevant issue.
It is not the same as being thankful or trying to improve one's situation by comparing it to others. A common example of this fallacy is the response "but there are children starving in Africa" to any less serious issue.
Whataboutism, also known as whataboutery, is a rhetorical technique and logical fallacy in which a person responds to a difficult concern or question with a counter-accusation in order to divert attention to a different topic. It involves changing the subject to focus on someone else's misconduct, implying that all criticism is invalid because no one is completely blameless. Whataboutism is typically used when one is charged with a harmful accusation regarding their past actions.

Ukrainian forces made visually verified advances in western Donetsk Oblast and western Zaporizhia Oblast, which Russian sources confirmed but sought to downplay. Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar reported that Ukrainian forces advanced 300 to 1,500 meters in southern Ukraine.[4] Malyar and other Ukrainian and Russian sources reported that Ukrainian forces made gains south of Velyka Novosilka between June 10 and 11, including liberating Makarivka, Neskuchne, Blahodatne, Storozheve, and Novodarivka.[5] Some Russian sources reported that battles are ongoing in “grey zone” or contested areas or that Ukrainian forces are operating in areas that Russian forces did not fully occupy before Ukrainian attacks in southern Ukraine.[6] Russian sources are likely referring to Ukrainian territorial advances through Russian defenses as capturing ”grey zones” in order to downplay Ukrainian gains and omit reporting on Ukrainian forces breaking through defensive lines. Ukrainian forces liberated several towns, but claims of a Ukrainian “breakthrough” are premature at this time.
Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar stated that Russian forces are transferring their most combat-capable units from the Kherson direction to the Bakhmut and Zaporizhia directions. Malyar stated on June 11 that Russian forces are transferring elements of the 49th Combined Arms Army (Southern Military District) and unspecified naval infantry and airborne forces elements from the Kherson direction in connection with the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (KHPP) dam.[7] Malyar noted that Russian forces likely blew the KHPP dam in order to shorten their defensive lines in Kherson Oblast as part of the response to the start of the Ukrainian counteroffensive. Flooding downriver of the KHPP has drained the Kakhovka Reservoir, resulting in landmasses emerging from the water. It is unclear how these terrain changes will affect maneuver warfare in southern Ukraine at this time.[8] If the terrain changes from flooding in the Dnipro River do not foreclose any possible Ukrainian river crossings in coming weeks and months, Russian forces may struggle to defend Kherson Oblast with remaining or then-available units if and when Ukrainian forces choose to conduct offensive operations across the river, assuming they have the ability to do so.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will threaten strikes against NATO member nations over their support for Ukraine, predicted Russia Today (RT) editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan.
Many allies have offered Kyiv billions of dollars in military aid and are credited with helping turn the tide of the war in favor of the Ukrainians. Russia has reacted with anger to this aid, accusing NATO of crossing red lines by providing Ukraine with weapons.
Simonyan said in a new interview that she believes Putin will soon give NATO an "ultimatum" over its aid to Ukraine, adding that the West giving the war-torn country weapons for free "constitutes participation in the war."
"One morning we'll wake up to find out that last night Vladimir Putin has declared an ultimatum, saying that if F-16 jets taking off from the airfields of such countries continue striking Russian territory — if such and such weapons, shipped from the ports of such and such countries, continue being supplied, then we will consider these airfields and these ports legitimate war targets," Simonyan said.
Simonyan added that Russia also has the right to declare, with no ultimatum, that NATO countries are legitimate targets. But she cast doubt that Putin would take that route, saying she does not "see another option" for how the spat over Ukrainian aid could possibly end.
Simonyan and other Russian state TV figures have made headlines for previous threats against Ukraine and the West. Last April, the RT editor-in-chief floated the idea of "complete destruction" of Ukraine and "a nuclear strike."
Simonayn's RT, along with other Russian state media, has largely towed the Kremlin line on the Russia-Ukraine war after the State Duma cracked down on dissent.
United Kingdom Foreign Secretary James Cleverly recently told reporters that Ukraine "has the right to project force beyond its borders to undermine Russia's ability to project force into Ukraine itself." His remarks drew a response from Russia, with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev saying that British officials are now a "legitimate military target" for Russia.
The United States, however, has said it does not condone strikes within Russia's borders.
"We have said this before, we do not support attacks inside of Russia. We've been very clear about that," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters last month.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine was Putin's idea. If the invasion fails, the failure is Putin's decision, not a Russian failure caused by the West. I know that Putin keeps blaming everybody who sends weapons to Ukraine for Russia's difficulties, but what the hell did he think would happen? That the West would just let him cut off a chunk of a European country and attach it to Russia? All of Europe is aware that Russia has cut off chunks of other European countries in the past. Finland for one example. Russia has even gobbled up entire Baltic countries.

How 'shock therapy' created Russian oligarchs and paved the path for Putin
But Yeltsin and his allies believed that time was not on their side. An attempted coup in August 1991 by Soviet hardliners against the reformers almost derailed the whole project. Entrenched Soviet industrialists and party insiders wanted a return to the old order. The Yeltsin administration decided that a program known as "shock therapy" — rapidly unleashing market forces — was the way to electrocute the old Soviet system and jolt Russia into embracing capitalism.
American advisors and global creditors, especially the International Monetary Fund, played a notable role advocating for shock therapy. But some influential shock therapists, like the economist Jeffrey Sachs, then at Harvard, believed such a radical program needed support. He proposed the United States and multilateral development agencies help Russian reformers succeed with a $30 billion aid package, akin to what America had provided Europe after WWII with the Marshall Plan. Sachs also called for the cancellation of Russia's debts. But these ideas were rejected by American leaders.
President Yeltsin delivered the first big shock to the Russian economy when he lifted price controls in December 1991. As the Soviet economy collapsed, however, the policy ended up unleashing hyperinflation. By 1994, consumer prices in Russia would skyrocket to almost 2000 times what they had been in 1990. That candy bar that had cost $1 now cost $2000. Hyperinflation devastated ordinary Russians.
Meanwhile, Chubais was tasked with overseeing mass privatization. That entailed transforming a nation whose almost entire economy consisted of state-controlled industries — manufacturing plants, oil refineries, mines, media outlets, biscuit factories, you name it — into private enterprises. Con-men told Yeltsin to destroy Russia by giving away Russian government property for less than one percent of what it was worth. Yeltsin couldn't do the back of an envelope financial arithmetic to understand he was being cheated. Yeltsin should have had somebody loyal to Russia do the arithmetic for him. That is all on Yeltsin.

Even worse, Yeltsin could not understand how inflation works, but he is not alone. Over at the inflation thread, 6ix is absolutely convinced that Biden controls prices, not the sellers. The result is high inflation because sellers keep raising prices until they have taken ALL the money that the dumbest Americans have. (Prices are about 100 times higher than prices were 100 years ago. That kind of long-term inflation, rather than monthly increases.) In Russia, the government actually does control prices in ways Biden could never do. When Yeltsin released control of prices, sellers raised prices, just like sellers obviously do in America, until they had taken ALL the money that the dumbest Russians have.
Likewise, Putin decided he wanted Ukraine and his Yes Men said "Yes, Your Highness! You are correct that the EU leaders are weaklings and will never send weapons to Ukraine for fear that you will cut off their natural gas. You are very wise and handsome, Your Highness!" Putin should not surround himself with Yes Men who know nothing. That mistake is all on Putin.

The Ukrainian Cities Obliterated In Russia's Self-Proclaimed 'Liberation'
June 11, 2023 20:23 GMT
By Donbas.Realities, Svitlana Kuzmenko, Carl Schreck
Russia has delivered multiple public justifications for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine that President Vladimir Putin launched in February 2022, among them what it has called the "liberation" of Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, which Moscow had seized partial control of in 2014.
But Russia's all-out war on Ukraine has decimated multiple cities and towns targeted in Moscow's ostensible "liberation" campaign.
A new project by Donbas.Realities, a regional news outlet of RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service, looks at the fate of five towns and cities in eastern Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion, including one that was not only nearly completely destroyed by Russian artillery and bombs, but also literally wiped from the map by Russian-installed occupying administrators.

Social media video footage circulated on June 12 reportedly shows Russian barrier troops – specialized units that threaten to shoot their own retreating personnel or compel offensives – shooting Russian forces that abandoned their positions somewhere in Ukraine.[54] ISW is unable to confirm whether the footage is authentic at this time. The United Kingdom Ministry of Defense reported in November 2022 that Russian forces in Ukraine probably started deploying “barrier troops” and “blocking units” to Ukraine and that Russian generals likely want their subordinate commanders to shoot deserters, including possibly authorizing personnel kill their own deserting servicemen.[55]

Reuters saw at least three dead Russian soldiers lying in the street, including one whose fly-blown body lay by an abandoned Russian military vehicle. Artem, a member of a Ukrainian territorial defence unit, who gave no surname said the advancing Ukrainian troops had watched from a drone as Russians initially tried to evacuate their comrade, only to dump him where he lay and flee.
It was the first independent confirmation of Ukraine's advance in the area, roughly 90 km southwest of the city of Donetsk . . . No surprise that Russians leave Russians behind to die. They have been abandoning tens of millions of Russians to death since before the Great Patriotic War. Such a fine bunch of people. So loyal, trustworthy, and caring.

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency warned the Ukrainian government not to attack the Nord Stream gas pipelines last summer after it obtained detailed information about a Ukrainian plot to destroy a main energy connection between Russia and Europe, officials familiar with the exchange said.
The message, delivered by CIA officials in June, followed a tip the CIA received from the military intelligence service of the Netherlands, these officials said.
....The CIA then received information that Ukraine had called off the original plan, according to a U.S. official....At a meeting with a European counterpart in October [after the bombing], CIA Director William Burns told his counterpart that available evidence didn’t point to Russia. When asked if it was Ukraine, he said, “I hope not,” according to an official present at the meeting.

The CIA thought Ukraine had given up on the plan after the warning, but apparently they only delayed it. This was certainly ballsy behavior from a country that desperately needed billions of dollars in military aid from the US for its war with Russia.

It is completely predictable that Russians would be POOR compared to EU citizens since Russians can't trust other Russians to not kill them when convenient. To grow wealthy requires citizens to trust that fellow citizens won't murder them.
Unlike the US in all wars of the 20th and 21st centuries, Russia does NOT keep a list of every soldier who dies because Russia does NOT give a damn how many millions of its citizens die. Back in 1990, Russia had killed 62 million of its own citizens as proof Russia does NOT care who dies.

Putin discussed the progress of the Ukrainian counteroffensive and signaled that he believes Russia can outlast Western military support for Ukraine. Putin stated that Russian objectives have not fundamentally changed, reiterating boilerplate rhetoric and false narratives accusing Ukraine and NATO of initiating the war.[10] Putin added that the West can push Ukraine into negotiations with Russia by stopping the supplies of military aid to Ukraine.[11] Putin noted that Ukrainian forces launched a ”massive” counteroffensive on June 4 and noted that Ukrainian forces attacked in southwestern Donetsk and Zaporizhia oblasts, claiming they suffered significant losses. Putin claimed that Ukraine has lost 160 tanks and claimed that 30 percent of Ukraine’s casualties are killed in action, whereas Russian forces have lost only 54 tanks. Putin may be attempting to systematically amplify and misrepresent Ukrainian losses of Western military equipment to portray Ukraine’s counteroffensive as failed and discourage the West from continuing to support Ukraine. Former Russian officer and ardent ultranationalist Igor Girkin observed that Putin’s comments indicate that the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) continues to misinform him about the true situation on the battlefield.[12]
Putin indicated that he is unwilling to announce a second wave of mobilization or declare martial law, despite maintaining his maximalist objectives in Ukraine. Putin acknowledged that some Russian “public figures” are discussing the urgent need for mobilization but noted that there “is currently no need today” for mobilization. Putin boasted about Russian contract service recruitment efforts using rhetoric consistent with ISW’s previous assessments that Putin is disinterested in announcing another mobilization wave and is instead prioritizing volunteer recruitment.[13] Putin also downplayed milbloggers’ concern over the Kremlin’s decision to not declare full-scale martial law throughout Russia, stating that Russia needs to expand its law enforcement rather than declare martial law. ISW continues to assess that Putin is a risk-averse actor who is hesitant to upset Russian society by ordering another mobilization wave or establishing martial law throughout Russia, indicating that Putin has not yet decided to fully commit to fighting a total war. Putin’s statements likely aim to reassure his constituencies that he does not intend to expand the “special military operation” further.

Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has spurred NATO members to plan in detail what has been unthinkable since the end of the Cold War — a direct conflict with Russia.
However, ahead of the bloc's summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, starting on July 11 when countering Russia will be top of the agenda, Sir Richard Shirreff, the former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, said NATO was not ready for a war with Moscow.
"It needs a real kick up the backside," he told Newsweek, as he took aim at dwindling military budgets across alliance members, although there are exceptions, such as Poland.
"There is a massive war going on in Eastern Europe. It's a land war and it's an air war, and so you need to invest in air and land, and that hasn't been done," Shirreff said. "Last year at its Madrid summit, (Alliance Secretary General) Jens Stoltenberg announced that NATO would ramp up its very high readiness forces to 300,000 — that simply hasn't happened."
The former British general said that the U.K. Army was an example of such cuts across the bloc being run down to a "ludicrous size" as he believed that the defense establishment had believed that China, not Russia, was the major long-term threat.
"Geography matters here and Russia is the wolf nearest the sledge," said Shirreff, the managing partner at the consultancy Strategia Worldwide. He believed there has been a "failure of deterrence" by the alliance, which missed an opportunity to build up capability after Putin seized Crimea in 2014.
"Am I confident that NATO will really be able to generate conventional forces ready for a conventional war with Russia? No, I'm not."

"Blocking units," sometimes called "barrier troops," are tasked with enforcing Russian military discipline, which includes preventing soldiers from running away from battle.
Asked about barrier troops in a previous story on the drone footage, Jason Jay Smart, a political adviser on post-Soviet and international politics, told Newsweek that "Russians shooting their own troops has a long tradition in Russian military history, and it has been commonplace throughout this war."
He added, "This incident, showing a total lack of concern or interest in preserving human life, is the epitome of how the Russian military thinks and behaves."

Russia does poorly because nobody decent trusts Russia. But Canada does well. You could do the same comparison between North Korea and South Korea. Russian forces reportedly doubled the trained dolphins defending the Russian naval base in Sevastopol in occupied Crimea. Online news outlet Naval News reported on June 14 that Russian forces have likely increased the number of dolphins defending the naval base from about three to four to about six to seven and will likely increase their patrol frequency.[54]
The Kremlin continues efforts to incentivize foreigners to serve in the Russian military. The Russian State Duma adopted the second reading of a bill aimed at simplifying the process of issuing residence permits to foreign highly skilled workers who signed contracts with the Russian military since the start of the war in February 2022.[48] The law will only apply to highly skilled workers who have already worked in Russia in their specialties for a minimum of two years.[49] ISW has previously reported on Russian legislation aimed at incentivizing military service, which now appears to be extending to incorporate foreigners living in Russia.[50]

Russia keeps making the same old threats to nuke the US, but the US has taken a calm attitude toward Russia. Instead of fearfully building more nukes as a threat to potentially retaliate against Russia, the US is methodically sending weapons to Ukraine to actually retaliate against Russia. Supplying weapons to Ukraine is far cheaper for the US than spending another $10 trillion on building even more nukes targeting Russia. And, unlike the US nukes, these weapons kill Russians right now, almost magically turning bad Russians into dead Russians without the collateral damage of killing Russian children like a nuking Moscow would do:
Putin Tells Russian Ex-Pats to 'Stay Away From Our European Nuclear Bomb Targets'
The Kremlin warned ex-patriots to evacuate areas close to several Russian-assigned European nuclear bomb targets, RadarOnline.com has learned.
In a chilling development to come as Vladimir Putin’s ongoing war against Ukraine continues to escalate, a close ally of the 70-year-old Russian leader suggested that nuclear attacks against Europe may “become necessary” and that Russian expatriates needed to be warned before the potential strikes.
Segey Karaganov, who chairs the Council of Foreign and Defense Policy, also revealed that the Kremlin may approve nuclear strikes as a way to force countries to back down from aiding Ukraine.
Nuclear concerns recently arose after both the United Kingdom and the United States supplied Ukraine with weaponry to combat Putin’s invading Russian forces. Putin is allegedly “offering nuclear weapons” to countries that join the war to help Moscow.
"This is a morally terrible choice – we use the weapons of God, dooming ourselves to severe spiritual losses,” the Putin ally said this week, according to Daily Star. "But if this is not done, not only Russia may perish, but, most likely, the entire human civilization will end."
Karaganov also mocked President Joe Biden and called the U.S. leader the "madman in the White House" who would have no choice but to retaliate against strikes on Europe by sacrificing “Boston for Poznan.” https://www.google.com/search?q=Poznan
As RadarOnline.com previously reported, Putin recently heightened nuclear tensions in Europe by moving a number of nukes from Russia into Belarus.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko intensified the nuclear tensions further after announcing that he would have "no hesitation" in “pushing the big red button” to start a nuclear war, and, most likely, World War III.
"God forbid, I will have to make a decision on the use of these weapons in modern times,” Lukashenko said earlier week. “But there will be no hesitation, if only there is aggression against us."
The United States said Putin’s decision to move nuclear warheads into Belarus, and Lukashenko’s chilling comments, were “irresponsible.”
"It's the latest example of irresponsible behavior that we have seen from Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine over a year ago,” U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.
"We have seen no reason to adjust our strategic nuclear posture or any indications that Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon,” he added.

This week, Putin again threatens to nuke the West.
The Russian president has threatened or hinted at the possibility of using nuclear weapons so many times since the war in Ukraine began that experts and civilians alike are increasingly ignoring him. An expert on Russia and Ukraine told Insider last year that the president's threats are most likely meant to manipulate global society by sowing confusion and fear.

Putin has mental problems, as does his apprentice dictator for life Kim Jong Un:
N Korea opens key party meeting to discuss defence
North Korea fired two short-range missiles off its east coast on Thursday, less than an hour after it warned of an “inevitable” response to military drills staged earlier in the day by South Korean and US troops. North Korea has long maintained that such drills threaten its security and are conducted in preparation for a possible invasion of its territory one day.

The Russian MoD is attempting to monetarily incentivize the destruction of Ukrainian military equipment, likely to bolster ongoing recruitment efforts and portray Russian forces as capable defenders against Ukrainian attacks. The MoD claimed that it issued payments to over 7,064 Russian military personnel for destroying 4,415 units of Western-made military equipment in Ukraine in 2022. The MoD also claimed that it issued payments of 50,000-300,000 rubles (roughly $598 — $3,593) for intercepting Ukrainian drones, rockets, missiles, and destroying various pieces of Soviet and Western-made equipment.[52] The MoD also claimed that Russian forces are destroying Western-provided tanks in the South Donetsk and Zaporizhia directions, but did not mention the claimed payout per unit.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin announced that Russia intends to complete the construction of a 1,400-kilometer highway that will circle around the Sea of Azov in Russian and occupied Ukrainian territories.[60]

A new poll shows dismal support for Putin’s use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine – a possibility Putin almost immediately reinforced he is considering.
The polling center – considered the most accurate for insights regarding the public reaction to the Kremlin’s increasingly autocratic governance – left open-ended the main question it posed to respondents, who are typically wary of publicly criticizing Putin’s regime.
“Some believe that in order to win in Ukraine Russia must use nuclear weapons, others believe that it is impossible to use nuclear weapons under any circumstances,” it posed, according to a translation. “And which of these points of view do you most adhere to?”
Putin himself, however, expressed on Friday that he remains undeterred by any opposition to the use of any weapons in his arsenals.
“The use of extreme means is possible if there is a threat to Russian statehood. And in this case, of course, we will use all the forces and means at the disposal of the Russian state,” Putin said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in response to a question about nuclear weapons use.
And, predictably, he referenced that the U.S. is the only nuclear-armed country to have employed them in battle.
“Such a precedent has been created – created by the United States,” he said, according to a translation.
Western officials and analysts have fretted in recent months about whether to take seriously Putin’s increasingly aggressive nuclear saber-rattling. He has ordered the deployment of strategic nuclear weapons to Belarus, one of its sole remaining loyal post-Soviet allies and has engaged in other provocative behavior, such as deploying ships armed with hypersonic missiles – which U.S. analysts believe could carry a nuclear warhead – into the Atlantic.
Less catastrophic, but equally perilous for Ukraine, others fear that the mere threats of using nuclear weapons could amount to enough to force Kyiv’s allies in Europe to begin backing away from staunch support for its military, particularly as it escalates its spring offensive.
Other analysts tell U.S. News the possibility Putin would use nuclear weapons is remote, but not impossible.
“The likelihood of Russia choosing – or Putin choosing – to use nuclear weapons directly against the West is astronomically low. It should not even be seriously considered at this stage,” Katherine Lawlor, senior intelligence analyst at the independent Institute for the Study of War, which has fastidiously tracked Russia’s military movements since it first invaded Ukraine, said in February.
“Putin would love it if Western leaders believed that he might. He is many things, but he is not suicidal,” Lawlor said. She adds that Putin ultimately does not want war with NATO – particularly given the current state of the Russian army. “He couldn’t even win a conventional war in Ukraine.”
Lawlor adds these circumstances could change if Russia feels it is squarely in a defensive position and needs to prevent “all-out disaster” – a scenario with renewed significance in light of Ukraine’s offensive.
“You have to think about the human response to nuclear use,” she said, describing the effect on a Ukrainian soldier who witnesses a rising mushroom cloud several miles away toward the front lines. “The Russians may assume it would have a devastating effect on the morale of the surviving Ukrainian forces.”

Oh, I see, 'Probing' is what they're calling it.
Remember what I posted? That if a smallish number of troops gets slaughtered they'll call it 'probing', if a larger number of troops gets massacred they'll call it 'reconnaissance in force' and if an even larger force gets creamed they'll call it 'shaping the battlefield'?
With about 7000 men killed and wounded and fifteen pct* of their fancy new western toys taken out of action, that's a mighty expensive 'probe'. If they keep 'probing' like that, seven more tries and they'll have no army left. Literally.
*that's why Zelensky is even now going around Europe and the world begging for more toys.

EVERYONE knows that Ukraine's 'counteroffensive' has begun. Kiev refusing to call it doesn't fool anyone; after all they still refuse to acknowledge they lost Bakhmut.

Putin Ally Says Nuclear Weapons 'Must' Be Used to Strike NATO Countries
By Andrew Stanton On 6/17/23 at 12:12 PM EDT
"The approach is very simple. I think tactical nuclear weapons will be used, and it is inevitable. I believe that tactical nuclear weapons must be used on the crossings over the Dnieper, on entry points of railroad transport from Western countries which supply arms, on Boryspil," he said.
Solovyov continued to say that Russia should use nuclear weapons against places where Western equipment is being stored to be used by Ukrainian soldiers in countries such as Poland, Germany and Slovakia, as well as places where Ukrainians are being trained—even if those areas are in NATO countries.

Russian State TV Guest Says Country Invaded Ukraine To Avoid War
By James Bickerton On 6/17/23 at 7:59 AM EDT
"We were forced to launch this special military operation when the leadership of the country realized that everything was going to happen by June 22.
"That a powerful army would be prepared, in fact, an army of Ukrainian zombies, slaves, that would invade here and there would be a big war. In order not to have this big war they had to start this special military operation."
Markov didn't provide any evidence that Ukraine had been planning to invade Russia, a view almost universally regarded as ludicrous by international relations experts.

Well, yes he can. Russia's missiles are accurate enough, and powerful enough. His destruction of Kiev's GRU building proves exactly that.
Why won't he? Well, one possible answer that makes sense is bc he has human assets embedded in Kiev's decision-making centers and he doesn't want to (literally) burn them bc the intel.they provide is very valuable. If that's the case, what do you expect him to say? "I won't destroy your buildings because I have assets embedded there"?
I can guess. Maybe you can't.

Actually, we should be looking at modal income and modal wealth (i.e. where most people are,"typical"). If you were to plot (for example) number of people on the vertical axis against income on the horizontal axis, you would find at least one peak.

The typical family gets appx $20,000 in income.

The New York Times (NYT) released a report supporting ISW’s prior assessment that Russian forces most likely destroyed the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (KHPP) dam.[22] NYT cited multiple US and Ukrainian engineering experts who examined diagrams of the KHPP dam, imagery of the destroyed dam foundation, footage of the initial breach, and seismic data. The experts determined that the degree of damage to the dam’s internal structures is consistent with an explosion from within the dam’s internal structures rather than from prior damage. NYT also quoted a senior US military official as saying that the US ruled out an external attack, such as from a missile, rocket, or other projectile, as causing the explosion, and that the US believes that Russian forces most likely caused the internal explosion that caused the dam’s collapse. ISW has assessed since the destruction of the KHPP dam on June 6 that the preponderance of available evidence, reasoning, and rhetoric suggests that Russian forces deliberately damaged the dam.[23]

An Inside Job
By James Glanz, Marc Santora, Pablo Robles, Haley Willis, Lauren Leatherby, Christoph Koettl and Dmitriy Khavin, June 16, 2023
A dam in Ukraine was designed to withstand almost any attack imaginable — from the outside. The evidence suggests Russia blew it up from within.
Deep inside the dam was an Achilles’ heel. And because the dam was built during Soviet times, Moscow had every page of the engineering drawings and knew where it was. The dam was built with an enormous concrete block as its foundation. A small passageway runs through it, reachable from the dam's machine room. It was in this passageway, the evidence suggests, that an explosive charge detonated and destroyed the dam. At 2:35 a.m on June 6, seismic sensors in Ukraine and Romania detected the telltale signs of large explosions. As the water levels further dropped this week, they fell below the top of the concrete foundation. The section that collapsed was not visible above the water line — strong evidence that the foundation had suffered structural damage, engineers said. In the chaotic aftermath, with each side blaming the other for the collapse, multiple explanations are theoretically possible. But the evidence clearly suggests the dam was crippled by an explosion set off by the side that controls it: Russia.

If you were spending 3.5% of your income on alcohol and drinking it all, it would seriously addle your brain and lower your income (cutting it in half or worse) because of hangovers. But if you poured the alcohol down the drain or gave it to friends who are alcoholics rather than drinking it yourself, your life would be almost unaffected by wasting 3.5% of your income. Every time the US spent 3.5% of gdp to send US troops overseas, the entire US got a hangover. See the Iraq War or the Afghanistan War for recent examples. It is much better to NOT send US troops. Send US money instead and avoid the terrible hangover.

why send either troops or money?
Are not many of these other nations that receive our foreign aid, troops, and/or protection themselves prosperous, developed nations able to look after their own national security? As I recall, that was the reason for Trump's inisistance that the NATO nations pay at least 2.2 pct of their GDP into military spending. After all, an aliance is supposed to be about MUTUAL defense, not giving 32 other nations a free ride forever.
Altho IMHO NATO has morphed into an aggressive entity not a muual defense pact.
It should be reduced and reconstituted, and ALL member nations should be equally responsible for defense.
In addition, every single one of our deployments has been to fight as aggessors on foreign soil. The USA has not fought a war to defend itself since the War of 1812. Or, some would say, the Civil War. What did the FF say about avoiding foreign entanglements?
Anyway, to get to prosperity for a moment: IMHO a nation cant be TRULY properous unless it has a productive, balanced economy as much as it is able. And that means ... yes, actually prosucing things. Tons of steel. Tons of grain. Barrels of oil, cubic meters of gas, tons of cement, chips, fertilizer, basic industrial chemicals, pharamceuticals, wood products, textiles, whatever it can produce it should. Many nations bc of historical accident are too small and have too few resources to be even modestly self sufficient; Japan and Cuba for example lack nearly every critical resource necessary for a modern economy. The USA, Russia, Canada, India and Brazil tho have great promise.
USA elites ditched production in favor of financialism, where costs are lower and returns are higher. Altho technically richer, if you discount non-productive entries int our GDP like the 'value' homeowners MIGHT receive IF they were torent their homes (yes, such bullshit really does enter into our so-called 'GDP') or look at purchasing power parity (PPP) or modal living standards, the USA doesnt stack up so hot

Russian occupation officials are continuing to prioritize medical treatment for Russian military personnel in occupied Mariupol, reportedly significantly increasing the civilian mortality rate in the city. The Ukrainian Resistance Center reported on June 18 that the civilian mortality rate in Mariupol from “natural” causes significantly intensified to a peak of 400 deaths per week – 2.6 times higher than Ukraine’s national mortality rate during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Ukrainian Resistance Center reported that Mariupol has no functional medical system because all medical facilities are treating Russian military personnel. Russian forces have consistently used civilian medical infrastructure in occupied Ukraine for their own needs, and are struggling to compensate for the resulting shortage in available healthcare personnel and beds.[50]
A Wall Street Journal (WSJ) interview with Russian prisoners of war (POWs) indicates continued significant morale and command issues among frontline Russian units and the continued Russian use of “barrier forces” to shoot retreating soldiers.[11] WSJ amplified the statements of three unidentified Russian POWs who voluntarily surrendered to Ukrainian forces during Ukrainian counteroffensive operations near Velyka Novosilka, on the administrative border between Donetsk and Zaporizhia oblasts. The POWs reported widespread fear of a Ukrainian counteroffensive among Russian forces on the frontlines. The POWs indicated that the Russian military command sees Russian conscripts and penal recruits as expendable, and claimed Russian officers order injured personnel deemed unfit for service back to the front line and use “barrier forces” to prevent penal recruits in “Storm-Z” units from retreating. Barrier forces are specialized units that threaten to shoot their own personnel either to prevent retreats or to force them to attack, and unverified social media footage recently circulated depicting Russian barrier troops shooting retreating Russian forces in Ukraine.[12] The POWs also indicated that Russian forces struggle to supply and staff their units, including struggling to crew tanks and armored vehicles.[13] The POWs expressed concern about returning to Russia in a POW exchange due to Russian laws prohibiting voluntary surrender to the enemy.

Russian spy chief flags 'suspicious' Ukrainian nuclear activity
(Reuters) - One of Russia's top spymasters said on Monday he hoped that the U.N. nuclear watchdog and the European Union would look into Ukrainian nuclear activity that he said might signal Kyiv was working on a "dirty bomb".
Sergei Naryshkin, the head of Russia's SVR foreign intelligence service, did not provide documentary evidence to back his assertions.

We all know this means Russia is considering using one themselves. This is about deflecting blame to Ukraine. Isn't that right comrade signym?

Maybe if WE stopped escalating and got back to handling this like adults ... neotiatig treaties AND STICKING WITH THEM... we might fix the problem.
BTW, if "sexual violence against men" was a real story, you'd think it would be splashed all over the internet instead of tucked away in some obscure little article. I don't know who you think you're fooling with your little 'stories'.

Quote:Firefly has lessons on how to handle Russians. Did you see Serenity? The big moment in Serenity was River standing on a pile of dead Reavers. Think Reavers as Russians. River did not capture the Russians and assign them POW status. River didn't contact the International Criminal Court prosecutors and present evidence that the Russians were guilty of War Crimes. Instead, River methodically killed all Russians. Nobody but the Russians would mourn the Russians passing away because Russians are horrible people who have killed tens of millions of Russians and also killed millions of innocent people who aren't Russian. Signym, if you keep insisting the Russians are not murderers, you are worse than a Russian. The Russians will die as Ukrainians slaughter the Russian horde because Russians don't listen to reason, Russians are trying to grow wealthy by stealing Ukrainian land, Russians won't stop murdering people, and Russians can no more stop lying than Signym can. Obviously, a movie like Serenity would not sell many tickets to Russians if the Russians understood that River Tam is extremely prejudiced against people behaving as Russians behave. Renaming the Russians as Reavers doesn't obscure what the movie is about.

Quote:Fantasy is Putin's entire oeuvre. Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov recently announced the good news: Ukraine has been demilitarized! Here are his exact words:

“Indeed, Ukraine was heavily militarized at the time of the beginning of the Special Military Operation. And, as Putin said yesterday, one of the tasks was to demilitarize Ukraine. In fact, this task is largely completed. Ukraine is using less and less of its weapons. And more and more it uses the weapons systems that Western countries supply it with.”
Peskov’s is a strikingly bizarre interpretation of demilitarization. True, Ukraine has used up much of the equipment and ammunition that hailed from Soviet days. Equally true, it’s been the recipient of far more effective and modern and NATO-compatible weapons systems from the fifty-plus countries in the Ramstein group.
Just how this amounts to demilitarization, especially at a time when Ukraine has launched what appears to be a successful counteroffensive, is unclear.
