Gov. Greg Abbott Laments That Texas Can’t Shoot Migrants Because Murder Is Illegal
Greg Abbott lamented that Texas can’t shoot migrants trying to cross the border illegally because “the Biden administration would charge us with murder.”
Shooting unarmed civilians attempting to cross the border would absolutely constitute murder. It would also violate a myriad of state, federal, and international laws protecting migrants and asylum seekers.

Why would a Republican governor say that? For a very good reason:
Poll indicates majority of Republicans are xenophobic racists | January 14, 2024
As Donald Trump dominates the GOP nomination race and some of his inflammatory comments find favor with the party faithful, CBS News measured how the public feels about his “poisoning the blood” language. A striking number of voters agree with this description of immigrants who enter the U.S. illegally, and among Republicans, associating the remarks with Trump himself makes them even likelier to agree.
We asked registered voters whether they agreed or disagreed with this statement in two ways. Half of survey respondents were simply asked about “poisoning the blood” without attributing the language to anyone, while the other half were told Trump said it. Either way we ask, most Republican voters agree.

Quote:Wrong. Trump is absolutely the BEST candidate. He highlights what is wrong with Republican voters. Clarity about who you are running against is very useful. Hitler might still have been elected if he had clearly campaigned on his real policies, but speaking the whole truth probably would have reduced the number of his votes so Hitler was not that stupid. Trump is that stupid, which could make a difference in an election that is more like a coin flip, 50-50.

Despite her low name recognition, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley polls better against Joe Biden than Trump does. Given the Democratic president’s dismal approval rating and advanced age, a minimally normal-seeming Republican nominee might well win November’s election in a landslide. Trump’s singular toxicity is Biden’s lifeline.
Trump helped cost Republicans multiple Senate races, got himself held civilly liable for sexual assault and indicted four times, facing 91 criminal charges.

Oh, and by the way...
That line of bullshit about Haley has come crashing down anyhow, so Vox should probably stop taking propaganda from The Lincoln Project seriously.
RCP Polling Aggregates today...

Trump vs. Biden - Trump 1.1%

The ridiculous Wall Street Journal poll that had Haley up by 17% and the equally ridiculous Messenger/Harris X poll that had Haley up by 10% have both aged off.
Expect Trump's numbers to only grow from here on out in both the primary and general election, starting with Trump trouncing everyone else in Iowa tonight.
And no... no amount of trying to bastardize the legal system by throwing your political opposition in prison is going to save you from what you've done to yourselves.

The New Yorker: Trump Receives a Warm Embrace in Frigid Iowa
Before the caucuses, snow had kept the former President away from his enthusiastic crowds. On Saturday, he finally arrived in Des Moines.

Quote:
Trump took the stage in Indianola, where a packed room had waited expectantly for hours; he stood in his white-and-gold hat, staring out at the crowd for the duration of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” He surveyed the audience: “We have so much time today. There’s no football game that anybody wants to watch. There’s nothing. We got a lotta time. Should we do the long version or the short version?” “Long!” the crowd responded, and he launched into one of his “two-hour beauties.”
And it's -40 degrees across the state right now...
The General debates between Trump and Biden* are going to be the funniest thing put on air in decades.
4 years later and Trump can still talk to a packed audience off the cuff for 2 hours straight, and Joe Biden can't even find his way off a stage without his handlers running up there and grabbing him by the elbows after he's done with his 2 minute teleprompter read followed by avoiding any and all questions people have for him.

Ron DeSantis and his backers completely misread what the GOP electorate wanted.
The DeSantis campaign was fundamentally a product of a certain class of the GOP’s elite: people who admired Donald Trump’s willingness to break the traditional norms of American politics but saw him as basically declassé or ineffectual. These are the sorts of conservatives who look admiringly at Hungarian autocrat Viktor Orbán, seeing his use of legalistic arcana to crush liberal opposition as a model for how to fight a culture war and win.
Most Republican voters aren’t this hyper-ideological. But DeSantis and his allies theorized that the “Trump but competent” shtick would allow them to pull from all sides of the GOP electorate. By focusing on his “culture warrior” background — like his fights over Covid restrictions and Disney — DeSantis could win over a key portion of the Republican base. By seeming more competent and organized, he could scan as palatable to the traditional establishment.
Except it turned out that the kind of culture war politics DeSantis offered, an often-abstract assault on “wokeness,” paled in comparison to what Trump served up. The MAGA base wanted Trump and his all-consuming post-2020 election anger. The establishment bloc preferred Nikki Haley, sticking DeSantis in no-man’s land. His campaign appealed to a small niche of highly intellectual populist conservatives, but that proved to be just about it.
The MAGA faithful didn’t want a pseudo-Trump gussied up for the GOP’s elite. They wanted Trump and his “retribution.” DeSantis’s failure to recognize this doomed him from the start.

A federal judge in Florida on Friday ruled that a U.S. law that bars people from possessing firearms in post offices is unconstitutional, citing a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling from 2022 that expanded gun rights.
U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, an appointee of Republican former President Donald Trump...said allowing the federal government to restrict visitors from bringing guns into government facilities as a condition of admittance would allow it to "abridge the right to bear arms by regulating it into practical non-existence."
That's from Reuters. The next step, I suppose, will be a ruling that there's no constitutional paragraph distinguishing between firearms, and therefore no bar to showing up for work with an AR-15 slung over your shoulder. I mean, if you can't bring an assault rifle into a post office or court building, American freedoms are hanging by a mere thread, right?

To adjust Nazi talk to fit Trumptards such as 6ixStringJack, instead of the word "Jews", substitute the word "Democrats", which fits because Jews tend to be Democrats. For the word "Germany", substitute the word "America". For foreigners, there are so many choices. Rather than choosing the words "France" and "Russia", as the Nazis did, the Trumptards choose "China" and "Mexico" stealing America's jobs.
We all know what eventually happened to the Nazis, but before that, the Nazis had prosperous years until Democrats from America brutally murdered millions of Nazis. They certainly deserved what happened to them. What part did Republicans play in WWII before 1942? (Germany invaded Austria on March 12, 1938. The war before the Democrats could do something despite the absolute obstinate objections of Republicans was for most of 1938, all of 1939, 1940, and 1941.) Republicans in Congress refused to get involved. The Nazis finally declared war on America but until then the Republicans didn't feel what the Nazis were doing in Europe was wrong.
Republicans still don't have a problem with Nazis and people like 6ixStringJack still don't, or can't, feel that Russia's invasion of Ukraine is as wrong as Germany's invasion of Austria and every other invasion that followed.

Donald Trump is a psychopathic criminal. He is a racist, fascist cult leader determined to destroy American democracy.
Those facts must be repeated over and over this year, because so many Americans appear willing to re-elect him president.
In the wake of his sweeping victory in the Iowa caucuses, Trump stands astride the ruins of the Republican Party, which he has transformed into a cult of MAGA zombies who believe every lie and conspiracy theory he spouts. Other Republican politicians have long since surrendered, even those who have gone through the motions of contesting the Republican primaries. These days, virtually all Republican politicians try to outdo each other in their goose-stepping fealty to Trump, while Republican voters who hate him have long since become quiet collaborators or left the party.
So Trump will easily win the Republican nomination this year for the third straight time.
The real question is whether non-MAGA Americans will fall for his demented act. Will voters remember why they chose his opponent in 2020?
Trump hopes not; he is counting on America’s recency bias and social media-fueled short attention span to cast a veil over the ugliness and criminality of his first term.
The danger lies in the possibility that Trump’s egotism and criminality will once again be normalized during the presidential campaign, accepted as nothing more than background noise. When voters size up the candidates, will Trump’s greed and dishonesty merely be seen as unpleasant character traits, about equal to the drawbacks of Joe Biden’s advanced age?

Team Trump to decimate regulations on fossil fuels
01/16/2024 05:00 AM EST
Former President Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement and staffed his environmental agencies with fossil fuel lobbyists.
Expect a second Trump presidency to show even less restraint.
Trump’s campaign utterances, and the policy proposals being drafted by hundreds of his supporters, point to the likelihood that his return to the White House would bring an all-out war on climate science and policies — eclipsing even his first-term efforts that brought U.S. climate action to a virtual standstill. Those could include steps that aides shrank back from taking last time, such as meddling in the findings of federal climate reports.
He’s alleging that human-caused global warming is fake, is baselessly blaming whale deaths on wind turbines and said last month that if elected he would be a “dictator for one day” — in part so he could “drill, drill, drill.”
Meanwhile, many of his former staffers are building out a comprehensive plan to decimate both climate policy and regulations on fossil fuels. And Trump allies expect that the former president would fill his next administration with officials who are even more hostile to efforts to address global warming.

Trump Says Presidents Should Be Allowed To ‘Cross The Line’ Without Being Prosecuted
By Alison Durkee | Jan 18, 2024, 06:40am EST

ents-should-be-allowed-to-cross-the-line-without-being-prosecuted/?sh=51e5bf50351e
Key Facts
Trump has tried to have criminal charges against him for trying to overturn the 2020 election thrown out on grounds of “presidential immunity,” claiming he should be immune from prosecution for actions he took as part of his presidential duties in the White House.
As a federal appeals court weighs that issue, Trump said on Truth Social he believes presidents should have “FULL IMMUNITY” and would not be able to “PROPERLY FUNCTION” if they didn’t.
“Even events that ‘cross the line’ must fall under total immunity,” Trump claimed, arguing that otherwise there will be “years of trauma trying to determine good from bad.” (Spoken like a defense lawyer who believes good/bad is unknowable until after the jury convicts and the Supreme Court upholds the conviction. Perhaps even after all that legal machinery has taken years to calculate its ultimate decision, good/bad is still up for debate.)
The ex-president and 2024 candidate likened the situation to police officers being allowed to perform “strong and effective crime prevention” even though there are “rogue cops,” writing, “Sometimes you just have to live with ‘great but slightly imperfect.’”
Trump’s comments come after his attorney Dean John Sauer took a very expansive view of immunity in court: When judges presented the hypothetical possibility of a president selling military secrets or assassinating political rivals, Sauer argued they could not be criminally charged unless they were first impeached and convicted by the Senate. (With Trump, the difference between good/bad is always a confusing and foggy feeling for him. For an example, see below.)
Trump didn’t respond to those hypotheticals specifically after the hearing, telling reporters only that he “feels that as a president you have to have immunity, very simple.”

Science is revealing why American politics are so intensely polarized
Political psychologists say they see tribalism intensifying, fueled by contempt for the other side
By Joel Achenbach | January 20, 2024 at 9:45 a.m. EST
https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2024/01/20/polarization-science
-evolution-psychology/
ATKINSON, N.H. — They stood in line for hours, in steady snow that became steady sleet, to hear the leader of their tribe.
Fresh from a major victory in Iowa, former president Donald Trump was scheduled to speak at 5 p.m. The parking lot at the country club opened at 10 a.m. The doors opened at 2 p.m., and hundreds of people were already in line. When everyone finally got inside, most had to stand tightly packed for hours more until the snowstorm-delayed candidate finally arrived just before 7 p.m.
It’s not always logistically easy being in the Trump tribe, but people stuck it out — and when instructed to turn around and express their sentiments directly to the news media, they dutifully booed and raised middle fingers.
The antagonism that Trump supporters feel toward the media is a small piece of a broader political and cultural phenomenon. This country, though politically fractious since its founding, is more polarized than ever, the rhetoric more inflammatory, the rage more likely to curdle into hate. It’s ugly out there.
As the 2024 primary season revs up, and with the political stakes this year extraordinarily high, voters are both polarized and hardly budging. Pundits expect another close election that’s a repeat of 2020. There’s not a lot of wobble on either left or right.
Social scientists have taken note of these hardening political divisions, pumping out academic articles and books that add data to what appears to be a steady rise in tribalism.
One theme emerges in much of the research: Our politics tend be more emotional now. Policy preferences are increasingly likely to be entangled with a visceral dislike of the opposition. The newly embraced academic term for this is “affective polarization.”
“It’s feelings based,” said Lilliana Mason, a political scientist at Johns Hopkins University and author of “Uncivil Agreement: How Politics Became Our Identity.” “It’s polarization that’s based on our feelings for each other, not based on extremely divergent policy preferences.”
The tendency to form tightly knit groups has roots in evolution, according to experts in political psychology. Humans evolved in a challenging world of limited resources in which survival required cooperation — and identifying the rivals, the competitors for those resources.
“The evolution of cooperation required out-group hatred, which is really sad,” said Nicholas Christakis, a Yale sociologist and author of “Blueprint: The Evolutionary Origins of a Good Society.”
This is just as true on today’s political stage. There are two major parties, and their contests are viewed as zero-sum outcomes. Win or lose. The presidency is the ultimate example: There are no consolation prizes for the loser.
No researcher argues that human nature is the sole, or even the primary, cause of today’s polarization. But savvy political operatives can exploit, leverage and encourage it. And those operatives are learning from their triumphs in divide-and-conquer politics.
The case of the warring Boy Scouts
People are instinctively prone to group identification.
“We wouldn’t have civilizations if we didn’t create groups. We are designed to form groups, and the only way to define a group is there has to be someone who’s not in it,” Mason said.
Experiments have revealed that “children as young as two will prefer other children randomly assigned to the same T-shirt color,” Christakis writes.
What’s most striking is that in the process of defining who is in and who is out of a group, enmity and derision can arise independently of any rational reason for it.
Mason and Christakis point to a famous-among-academics experiment from 1954. Social psychologist Muzafer Sherif took 22 Boy Scouts and separated the

Biden needs to campaign a lot harder on abortion rights and how it’s inextricably tied to the threat Trump poses to democracy.
Even outside of direct votes, politicians who support abortion rights have been smoking anti-abortion ones. The pattern is so obvious that Republicans who were previously fire-and-brimstone abortion opponents are now curiously mum. Former President Donald Trump, whose appointment of far-right justices to the Supreme Court ushered in the demise of Roe v. Wade, has characteristically tried to play all sides, calling state restrictions “terrible” while also boasting that the “miracle” of overturning Roe was to his credit; he has also said he supports some very limited exceptions to general abortion bans (ever the amoralist, he says he just wants “to get something where people are happy”). Trump’s position may be ever-wavering, but he seems to understand one thing the anti-abortion movement doesn’t: The long-held GOP opposition on abortion is really, really unpopular, and this has given Democrats a significant advantage.

MAGA voters cling to myths about the “Trump Economy.”
But the reality was quite different.
At the end of 2019—before Covid hit—Trump was leading the US economy toward collapse.
Here are 5 facts to prove it.
1. Trump said his tax cuts for the rich would “supercharge” the economy. But he created 15% fewer jobs in his first 3 years [pre-Covid] than Obama created in his final 3.
2. His first 3 years in office—pre-Covid—were devastating for factory workers.
3. 2019 was the worst year for U.S. farmers since the farm crisis of the 1980s.
4. By 2019, he was running trillion-dollar deficits, even as poverty soared in Red States.
5. The Trump recession started BEFORE Covid. Despite his deficit-busting tax cuts, Trump's mismanagement brought to an end the Obama-Biden recovery, which in 2019 became the longest US economic expansion in history.

Brian Klaas, a political scientist at University College London, captures the remarkable nature of the 2024 presidential election in an Oct. 1 essay, “The Case for Amplifying Trump’s Insanity.”
Klaas argues the presidential contest now pits . . .
A 77-year-old racist, misogynist bigot who has been found liable for rape, who incited a deadly, violent insurrection aimed at overturning a democratic election, who has committed mass fraud for personal enrichment, who is facing 91 separate counts of felony criminal charges against him, and who has overtly discussed his authoritarian strategies for governing if he returns to power.
against “an 80-year-old with mainstream Democratic Party views who sometimes misspeaks or trips.”
“One of those two candidates,” Klaas notes, “faces relentless newspaper columns and TV pundit ‘takes’ arguing that he should drop out of the race. (Spoiler alert: it’s somehow *not* the racist authoritarian sexual abuse fraudster facing 91 felony charges).”
Klaas is asking how Trump gets away with this. Why aren’t the newspapers reporting his looney-toons to the public?

Donald Trump's Taiwan Remarks Spark Fury and Concern
Jan 21, 2024 at 4:49 PM EST
Trump suggested the United States should not help Taiwan in the event of an invasion from China. Why? Trump is bitter:
"Taiwan did take all of our chip business," Trump said. "We used to make all of our own chips, now they're made in Taiwan, 90 percent of [them]...Remember this, Taiwan took, smart, brilliant, they took our business away."
"Trump accuses his opponents of being weak on China and then he essentially openly gives China a green light to invade Taiwan without US retaliation, if he were to be elected," policy expert Ed Tarnowski wrote in a post. "This is not serious policymaking!"

Senate GOP fears drop in Trump enthusiasm, energy
GOP senators say there is less enthusiasm for former President Trump among Republican-leaning voters compared to 2016, a drop in voter energy that was apparent when only 15 percent of Iowa’s registered Republicans showed up for Monday’s caucuses.
Lawmakers acknowledge the weather was a factor behind the low turnout in Iowa but point to other signs of diminished enthusiasm for Trump, something that could hurt down-ballot Republican candidates in swing states.

The 1980 October Surprise theory refers to an allegation that representatives of Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign made a secret deal with Iranian leaders to delay the release of American hostages until after the election between Reagan and President Jimmy Carter, the incumbent. Reagan won the election, and, on the day of his inauguration — minutes after he concluded his 20-minute inaugural address — the Islamic Republic of Iran announced the release of the hostages. The Reagan administration's practice of covertly supplying Iran with weapons via Israel likely originated as a further quid pro quo for having delayed the release until after Reagan's inauguration, setting a precedent for covert U.S.-Iran arms deals that would feature heavily in the subsequent Iran–Contra affair.

Everything is going to hell, per Trump
Trump: "Which is incapable of solvin’ even the sollest problem. We are an institute in a powerful death penalty. We will put this on"
There is video of Trump saying this.
9:42 PM · Jan 22, 2024
https://twitter.com/BidenHQ/status/1749638608577761385
On his good days, Trump is still fine. On his bad days he can barely string two sentences together. Still, his meaning is clear: America is going completely to hell. It's doom porn. For some reason, there's a big audience of people who just can't get enough of this stuff. Like Ted Johnson, who was profiled today in Politico:
‘Our System Needs to Be Broken, and Trump Is the Man to Do It’
https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/01/22/new-hampshire-primar
y-voter-00136850
“People need to be held accountable. That’s why you’ve got to break the system to fix the system,” he said. “Because it’s a zero-sum game right now. And to be honest with you, the Democrats are genius. They did anything they could do to win and gain power, even if they lie, cheat, steal. … What they’re doing is they’re destroying the country. Who could bring it back?” He answered his own question: “Trump’s the only one.”
What's remarkable is this description of Johnson:
He’s 58. He’s married to his second wife and has three young adult sons. He was in the Army for 22 years — he retired as a lieutenant colonel — and now he is a senior project manager for an IT security company and works from home. He lives in a classic three-bedroom house he bought almost four years ago for $485,000 that’s now worth roughly a quarter-million dollars more.
This is not some discouraged working-class guy who lost his job to outsourcing and has never been able to recover. Johnson is married, upper middle class, makes good money, and lives in a nice, safe small town where almost everyone has a college degree. But after watching Fox News he went from thinking he'd vote for Nikki Haley to being a die-hard Trump supporter. Because Democrats are destroying the country and someone has to take a wrecking ball to it before we can rebuild.
I know that not everyone is as well off as me. Still, it's just a fact that the vast majority of Americans are in pretty good shape and the country as a whole is as strong as any country in the world. The burning desire among many conservatives and liberals to believe that everything is horrible — and getting worse — is nothing short of inexplicable.

Tufekci interviewed more than a hundred Trump supporters. Tufecki found that authoritarian leaders project qualities that many voters admire. Not one of the voters she talked to uttered the word “authoritarian” — but they are drawn to Trump’s “strength” and his “ends-justifies-the-means” leadership style. In other words, authoritarianism.
What is particularly alarming is that authoritarian leaders like Orbán in Hungary and Erdogan in Turkey keep getting re-elected as those countries grow more antidemocratic, fascistic, and corrupt with each election. One tool is the nearly total control of media.
Trump’s appeal isn’t all that mysterious and that acknowledging that can help us grapple with its power.
What Trump has to sell is a very dark picture of our country. With a self-serving “Deep State” calling the shots. He will replace “the swamp” with his own deeper, darker, corrupt state filled with lackeys — there will be no Mattis, or Kelly, or McMaster, or Milley. But you can bet there will be places for the Stephen Millers of Trump World.

Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) is out to show us that he’s one politician who can keep a promise. On July 9, within minutes of President Trump’s announcement of Judge Brett Kavanaugh as his Supreme Court nominee, Schumer vowed to “oppose Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination with everything I have.” When he said everything, he meant it.
I can’t prove it, but if I were a betting man, I would wager that Schumer’s statement was written ahead of time, leaving a blank for the nominee’s name. Other Senate liberals, such as Kamala Harris (D., Calif.) and Mazie Hirono (D., Hawaii) actually announced their opposition nearly two weeks earlier, without even knowing who the nominee would be.
Nothing that the confirmation process had to offer was relevant to these senators because they already had the one piece of information, the one word, that really mattered: Trump. They would oppose the nominee because he or she would be Trump’s nominee. Period.
...
No, the only thing that matters to liberals is preventing Trump’s nominee from joining the Supreme Court. To pursue that political goal, Senate Democrats picked up the script from the beginning of the previous Republican presidency. Within days of President George W. Bush taking office in 2001, Democratic Leader Tom Daschle (S.D.) vowed to use “whatever means necessary” to defeat his judicial nominees.
That’s what Democrats are doing today, by any means necessary. They automatically credit an accusation even though every person the accuser names denies any knowledge of it. Democrats demand a new hearing for an accuser who cannot identify the time or the place of an alleged incident. They refuse to share with the rest of the Judiciary Committee what they claim is evidence against Kavanaugh. And, when The New Yorker traffics in what it admits is an unsubstantiated rumor, the hit piece’s author says the accuser came forward because “Democrats came looking” for someone to say such things.

Here's somebody else who thinks Trump is a Dictator.
Rachel Maddow: Trump Supporters Are Voting For The "End Of Politics," They Want A Dictator

Quote:
That is what he is offering. The strong-man model is what the Republican base is enthused about. That is something that sets him apart from every other Republican candidate. I think we are naive to think that he's tricking people into supporting him and then, surprise, he's going to act like a dictator. What he is offering is strong-man politics, the end of elections, the end of politics, the sidelining, or the domesticating of the judiciary and the Congress. He will be the man in charge and they will get it done. That's what he is selling. That is what they are very eager to buy.
...
JEN PSAKI, MSNBC: How did we get here? How did we get to that stage where you have this person who has such a control of a political party? Even beyond the politics of it, where that appeal of the strong-man argument, this worship of dictators, is so appealing to a large swath of the country?
Maddow also told you this in March of 2021:
"The virus stops with every single vaccinated person. A vaccinated person gets exposed to the virus, the virus does not infect them. The virus cannot then use that person to go anywhere else. It cannot use that person to go anywhere else. It cannot use a vaccinated person as a host to go get to more people."
She and MSNBC can try to delete history all they want, but we won't ever forget what you did.

Haley on Tuesday night said that a victory for Trump in the primary was a victory for President Biden in the general. It’s not so cut and dry, but the polling suggests that she’d be a tougher matchup for Biden than Trump would.
Yes, Trump does currently lead Biden in most national and swing-state polls. But Haley also holds her own against the likely Democratic nominee, despite her relatively low name recognition. More critically, Trump is disliked by a majority of the American people, and that is unlikely to change (we are all extremely familiar with Donald at this point). Only a little over 37 percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of Haley. Given that Trump has been airing lots of ads portraying Haley as too liberal, it’s likely that a disproportionate share of Haley’s detractors consist of Republicans who would ultimately come home for her in the event that she were nominated.
The 52-year-old Haley also would have thrown the president’s advanced age into even sharper relief. Given Biden’s high disapproval numbers, he will need to convince many voters who do not like him that they despise the alternative even more — so much more, in fact, that they should bother to turn out and vote for an octogenarian they resent.
In this respect, Trump is a far more useful foil for the president than Haley would have been.
Loser: The Koch network
When Haley’s star began rising in 2023’s final months, she received an influx of cash from Trump-skeptical Republican mega-donors. Perhaps the biggest catch was an endorsement from American for Prosperity Action (AFPA), the billionaire Koch family’s political vehicle. Warning that Trump would likely lose to Biden in a general election, AFPA devoted tens of millions of dollars to Haley’s long-shot campaign to break his stranglehold on the GOP.
Oops.
It’s possible, maybe even likely, that all that money narrowed the gap between Haley and Trump. But the goal was not to lose gracefully; it was to win. And with Haley losing in her best early state, it’s clear now that this goal is out of reach. The Kochs may well have lit their money on fire.
Of course, the Kochs have money to burn. But the defeat runs even deeper than the loss of a few millions: It’s a devastating blow to their ideological vision for the party.
Broadly speaking, traditional Republican elites like the Kochs believed in a party that would advance extremely conservative priorities — especially lowering taxes on the wealthy — but do so within the confines of “normal” democratic politics. They were comfortable harnessing radical energies, such as their support for the Tea Party protests in 2009 and 2010, but ultimately believed they could keep a lid on the base’s passion.
Obviously, Trump upended everything. Their last-ditch hope for 2024 was that the base could be made to see reason after the Trump-led GOP’s defeats in the last three election cycles. Haley, a skilled politician friendly to the Republican old guard, seemed like their best chance for getting their message across.
That she has seemingly missed her shot reflects that these particular elites were living in the past. The Republican Party clearly belongs to Trump and his devotees. If the GOP’s billionaires really do believe that Trump is unacceptable, they now have one serious option: start opening their wallets for Joe Biden.

No it doesn't.
That was only due to some outdated outlier polls by Wall Street Journal, The Messenger/Harris X and FOX News that had Haley up on Biden* by 17 points, 10 points and 11 points, respectively.
Currently, Trump is +2.9 on Biden* and Haley is only up +1.1 in the aggregate, with a majority of the polls showing Haley losing to Biden*.

Professor answers: That’s easy. You get a fitness benefit from being able to imagine scenarios. In social creatures, that includes modeling other animals. As a byproduct, some creatures become able to model themselves.
Student: Okay, but why all the lying?
Professor: Imagine you wake up one morning in a car driven by an insane monkey. You can only observe the monkey from the back seat. The doors are locked. You try to talk to the monkey, touch the monkey, but it won’t listen.
You spend a little while freaking out, clawing at the windows, but it becomes clear there’s no escape.
What’s the only way to get by without going mad?
Student: Decide you are in control of the car.

Arizona GOP Chair Resigns After Kari Lake Threatens "More Damaging" Recording
Update (1445ET): That didn't take long.
One day after the Daily Mail published a leaked recording of Arizona GOP Chairman Jeff DeWit trying to bribe Trump ally Kari Lake to stay out of politics for two years, DeWit resigned.
"This morning, I was determined to fight for my position," he said in a statement reported by Just the News. "However, a few hours ago, I received an ultimatum from Lake's team: resign today or face the release of a new, more damaging recording. I am truly unsure of its contents, but considering our numerous past open conversations as friends, I have decided not to take the risk. I am resigning as Lake requested, in the hope that she will honor her commitment to cease her attacks, allowing me to return to the business sector—a field I find much more logical and prefer over politics."
* * *
Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake called on the state's GOP chair Jeff DeWit to resign after a recording emerged of him trying to bribe Lake to stay out of politics for two years.
In the recording, first reported by the Daily Mail, DeWit, 51, can be heard asking lake to name her price not to run.
"There are very powerful people who want to keep you out," he can be heard telling her in a conversation recorded last March.
Jeff DeWit and his wife Marina with President Donald Trump.
He then, after asking her not to mention the conversation to anyone, makes his first offer:
"So the ask I got today from back east was: "Is there any companies out there or something that could just put her on the payroll to keep her out?"
Lake is taken aback.
"This is about defeating Trump and I think that's a bad, bad thing for our country," she replied.
DeWit later framed it in a different way.
"Just say, is there a number at which -
"I can be bought?" Lake interjected. "That's what it's about?"
"You can take a pause for a couple of years. You can go right back to what you're doing," DeWit replied.
Lake repeatedly shuts him down, and says she wouldn't pull out for a billion dollars.

Holy shit, I just heard that audio this morning.
Kari Lake is awesome for putting that out there. You know shit like this happens every day in both parties, but when do you get the opportunity to listen to an actual conversation.
I don't blame him for resigning. She set him on fire with gasoline.
I hope she releases the audio anyway.

GOP senators seethe as Trump blows up delicate immigration compromise
In recent weeks, Trump has been lobbying Republicans both in private conversations and in public statements on social media to oppose the border compromise, according to GOP sources familiar with the conversations, because he wants to campaign on the issue this November.
The border is a very important issue for Donald Trump. And the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and congresspeople that he doesn’t want them to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Biden for it is appalling.

For over a decade now though, they have felt like they were invincible. Invulnerable to criticism of their cynical pandering, with the full force of the media behind them. And it didn't matter how much money they were losing because there was always more.

Greg Abbott, joined by 25 other GOP governors, now argues that the Biden administration has violated the federal government’s “compact” with the states—an abdication that justifies state usurpation of federal authority at the border. This language embraces the Confederacy’s conception of the Constitution as a mere compact that states may exit when they feel it has been broken. It’s dangerous rhetoric that transcends partisan grandstanding. And as before, it’s being used to legitimize both nullification and dehumanization.
Consider the very first line of a statement Abbott issued on Wednesday that was subsequently backed by the other Republicans, which states, “The federal government has broken the compact between the United States and the states.” That language is strikingly similar to the very first line of the secession ordinances passed by slave states when they purported to leave the union. Most of these ordinances began with a declaration that the state sought “to dissolve the union” that was “united under the compact” known as the Constitution. It was this “compact”—not national sovereignty, but a contract among states and the federal government—that constituted the United States of America. The secession ordinances asserted that the federal government, and the president especially, owed certain constitutional duties to the states under this contract. It had allegedly abdicated those duties by threatening to restrict slavery and disrespecting the rights of Southern states in other ways inextricably linked to the maintenance of white supremacy. Any state, these ordinances concluded, was therefore entitled to depart the union and become “free and independent” once more.
President Abraham Lincoln was staunchly opposed this so-called compact theory. As he explained in his first inaugural address, “The Union of these States is perpetual” under the Constitution. The United States do not form a compact, but are a “country” bound tog

The Federal Government is not protecting our southern border.
Anyone with two neurons knows this.
Biden* should be impeached and railroaded out of office.

Quote:I live in Texas. I speak Spanish. The border is doing fine, but it is the Trumptards that aren't, especially our Trump-loving Texas governor. I won't tell you the story about how that worthless asshole, Gov Gregg Abbott, ended up in a wheelchair, but it was his fault. Signym, you should be sent back to the old country your Nazi father came from. 6ix, sue your drug-addled mother for what she did to you. Meanwhile: the ultimate Trumptard talked to the jury, yesterday. Today the world discovers that Trump is very persuasive:

That bill had nothing to do with border security.
It was for BILLIONS of dollars to house and clothe and feed even more illegal invaders AND give BILLIONS MORE to Ukraine.
Fuck Joe Biden*. Fuck Democrats.
Your party is OVER.

Signym and 6ix are too stupid to understand, but a Republican Senator will try to explain it in simple words:
Republican Senator Gives Away the Game on Why They Killed Border Deal
Josh Hawley is admitting point-blank this fight was never about the border at all.

ruth-killed-border-deal
Senator Josh Hawley said the quiet part out loud on Friday, explicitly tying the GOP’s border security grandstanding to a coordinated effort to hurt President Joe Biden’s reelection chances.
“Senator, is this deal dead, effectively?” Fox News’s Laura Ingraham asked Hawley Thursday evening.
“I hope so,” Hawley said. “It should be. If it’s not dead yet it should be dead. There is absolutely no reason to agree to policies that would further enable Joe Biden.”
The Senate reached a bipartisan border deal this week, which would include additional funding for border security as well as aid for Ukraine. But the minute Donald Trump criticized the deal, Senate Republicans caved and said they probably won’t pass it.
Hawley’s statement is more proof that Republicans aren’t all that interested in the so-called border crisis. They just want to use it as a political tool in the 2024 election.
