I figured I may as well at least start a thread for this since there's no denying 2024 is off to a terrible start.

I'll even argue that it has very little to do with woke or other agenda driven content that started somewhere between 2012 and 2016 and came to a head in 2023. Outside of a few examples like the American Society of Magical Negroes and a racist Don't Tell Mom, The Babysitter's Dead remake they tell me is in theaters but nobody can find anywhere, I can't really think of any recent agenda driven flicks that were released in 2024.

And it's not like there's a lot of films I even have to recall at this point. They're putting out so little nearly 4 months into the year.

As evidence of both these observances, just look at the video view counts on the Geek Culture Rage Bait YouTubers recent videos compared to last year. I've even found some of the channels I respect putting out videos that they're going to look back on with regret simply because they're really reaching for content to keep their channel views up and making petty complaints about things that are beneath them to complain about.

2024 is going to be the Year of Reckoning for Hollywood. They spent years trying to push stuff on audiences they didn't want to see without any regard for their bottom line and talked a big game about how they didn't need you as an audience anymore when all that no-interest money was floating around, but all that money dried up and they found out really quick how untrue that was.

Then the writers went on strike, and the actors soon after that... and it went on for months. All the while the Media made it sound as if the world was holding their collective breath the entire time when in reality nobody cared, and boy did they celebrate when they got what they wanted and talentless hacks like Jimmy Kimmel and Steven Colbert could finally resume their nightly propaganda.

I don't think there's much celebrating among them right now though. Unless they had a hookup to a decent, stable job outside of entertainment, most of them are too busy working 2 or 3 part-time minimum wage jobs just to pay the bills since the vast majority of work they had lined up for 2024 just disappeared into the ether.

Nobody wants to watch any of their trash, and with the economy as it is today the people have made it very clear they have no more interest or ability to continue paying to be preached to and browbeaten.

Maybe I'll end up doing the numbers again like I did last year. If I do, I don't imagine that I'd even start that list until a good deal into the 4th quarter. It's so much work updating that all the time, especially making the tables on this website. But eventually I'll get around to doing the final numbers for 2023 and if I do the 2024 list we'll have those statistics for what are going to be looked back on as two very interesting years in Hollywood.

I'm going to go ahead and take up the next 2 posts here for the graphs in case I get around to them.

Feel free to post your thoughts or predictions about the 2024 Box Office.

Jerry Seinfeld declares the movie business 'is over,' not the 'pinnacle' of society anymore

By Lauryn Overhultz | April 23, 2024 12:20pm EDT

e-business-over-not-pinnacle-society-anymore

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld admitted the movie business "is over" as he prepares to debut his first feature as a director.

Seinfeld, 69, began his stand-up comedy career in 1976 and later starred in his own TV show for nine seasons. The comedian took on his first film as director with "Unfrosted," set to premiere in May.

"It was totally new to me," Seinfeld told GQ of working as a director. "I thought I had done some cool stuff, but it was nothing like the way these people work. They’re so dead serious! They don’t have any idea that the movie business is over. They have no idea."

He explained that "film doesn’t occupy the pinnacle in the social, cultural hierarchy that it did for most of our lives. When a movie came out, if it was good, we all went to see it. We all discussed it. We quoted lines and scenes we liked. Now we’re walking through a fire hose of water, just trying to see."

Seinfeld had a few ideas about what might have "replaced" the industry's spot in the cultural hierarchy.

"Depression? Malaise? I would say confusion," he told the outlet. "Disorientation replaced the movie business. Everyone I know in show business, every day, is going, ‘What’s going on? How do you do this? What are we supposed to do now?’"

Seinfeld isn't worried about the industry collapse due to his prolific career in comedy. "Seinfeld" was one of the highest-rated shows on television throughout its nine-season run. The comedian also launched "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" in 2012, which ran for 11 seasons.

I saw some charts at The Numbers the other day, don't know how I stumbled upon them.

They showed the worst performances in Box Office history. Almost all of the huge failures were from 2020 and newer.

Wish I could find those again, don't see them now.

I disagree with Jerry on the first part, but not on the 2nd part.

Although I don't think that Jerry actually said "it's over", and that was the writer's interpretation for a headline.

Hollywood will be fine. You don't just stop making movies. But we're witnessing a huge change taking place right now. There's no movies in the movie theaters right now because they cancelled hundreds of projects last year. Of the few that have come out so far in 2024, most of them cost way too much to make and lost the studios money.

This is a time to regroup and figure out how to make money again now that the free interest loans are gone.

It turns out that you actually have to serve your customers and give them what they want when you can't just borrow your way out of all your problems.

And as for those who engage in "Hollywood Accounting", it's time for them to give that up and find another way to scam their money, because continuing to do it with movies is going to get them caught real quick under our current conditions.

Let's just say that we're never going to see another moving starring Brie Larson make over a Billion dollars at the box office again.

In the meantime, if you live around a theater showing one of them, you might be able to enjoy some older movies. Monday they were showing Spider-Man 2 for a single day and it almost made $1 Million. Shrek 2 was available in 1,512 theaters for 2 weekends straight and the week in between just last week.

This weekend, they're re-releasing the original Alien movie and 1999's The Mummy. They're both opening wide as well.

Not allowed in cinema in CA, UK, or Yurp. Some youboob contraption paid them to exclude cinema viewers.

So the NA Box Office is substantially lower than the other films at the BO. I just don't know how much. I don't recall another film which had delayed, or staggered, or separate release for USA vs CA.

I don't get the youboob contraption reference, so I'm lost on that one. Sorry.

I found this, and it sounds right to me. Granted, it was a reddit thread from 5 years ago.

How much does Canada add to domestic box office numbers and why aren’t they split out as their own country?

The two top answers in that thread...

Quote:

Canada has a population about 1/10th of the US. So I would assume Canada accounts for 1/11th of the domestic numbers.

Quote:

There was a post here about Canada box office numbers for several movies from 2015 onward.

I did the math and assuming those numbers were reported in USD, the Canadian numbers generally accounted for about 8-10.5% of a films total domestic gross.

Or roughly, 1/11th.

Probably around $1 - $1.5 Million is the missing figure with no Canadian box office.

It's a shame, but for whatever reason Guy Ritchie just keeps putting out the box office flops. I would have to imagine that this movie had already been greenlit and far enough into production for investors to pull out by the time he had his back-to-back mid-budget flops in the theaters last year. I wouldn't expect to see anything out of him after this for a while.

I think he'd be great at low-budget fare.

I didn't even know it until today when I read that Kung Fu Panda 4 is the 3rd movie of 2024 to earn over $500 Million, but KFP4 is also the third movie to displace all of China's top performing movies of 2024 so far as well. I honestly didn't see that one coming.

https://www.the-numbers.com/box-office-records/worldwide/all-movies/cu
mulative/released-in-2024

It will be interesting to see if or even when the US finally manages to knock China out of the Top 10 this year. Currently, there are no movies in the box office outside of Dune: Part 2, Godzilla x Kong and Kung Fu Panda 4 that are going to come close to beating YOLO, let alone the other 3 Chinese movies that are sitting at 5th, 6th and 7th place as of today.

We're already 1/3rd finished with 2024. They'd better have a few bangers coming out this summer to make up for the slow start.

I know what Prime Video is. Never heard it called Youboob before.

If this is actually an Amazon production in the background, the regular money making rules get thrown out the window and who knows how much money everybody is losing here or how Amazon justifies how expensive it was to make when calculating what little support this movie would give to the overall customer retention.

Any feature from 2023 that Amazon was a part of lost quite a bit of money with the 2.5xRoT. They probably don't see it that way since they're focused on the future and growth. They're probably one of the few companies in the world right now that can still afford to do that in Joe Biden*'s economy.

Who knows what deals were made before production began, but this movie's loss is probably far less Lionsgate's loss than it was Amazon's loss if they were involved.

Per Wikipedia, anyway...

Quote:

Paramount Pictures acquired the rights to Damien Lewis's book The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: How Churchill's Secret Warriors Set Europe Ablaze and Gave Birth to Modern Black Ops in 2015. Guy Ritchie signed on to direct the project in February 2021, from a script by Arash Amel, with Jerry Bruckheimer producing the film.[6] In October 2022, Henry Cavill and Eiza González were set to star, with Paramount no longer involved and Black Bear International now handling sales for the project.[7] In February 2023, additional casting including Alan Ritchson, Henry Golding, Alex Pettyfer and Cary Elwes was announced.[8]

Principal photography began on February 13, 2023, in Antalya, Turkey,[9][10] and wrapped up in April 2023.[11]

The day filming began, it was announced Lionsgate had acquired U.S. distribution rights to the film, planning to give it a wide release in 2024, and that select international distribution rights had been sold to Amazon Prime Video.[9]

Or otherwise... Who the F knows?

This one was a mess, and Paramount was probably really smart to back out of it.

I don't have any graphs made for 2024 yet, or data on individual studios, but I did just make these two posts in the Fall Guy Failure thread. They probably belong in this thread instead.

It's not looking good overall.

I figured that I should add that these low numbers for The Fall Guy on Friday are due in no part to any other movie shining and taking away ticket sales from this weekend's #1 movie.

The Fall Guy made 4 times as much money as number 2 and number 3, and just a hair less than the next 6 movies combined.

In a normal box office market, ratios like that would be a stunning victory for the #1 movie.

I think these are real warning signs about the overall economy that nobody is recognizing yet.

We'll see what happens going forward. Hopefully a month from now the Box Office really picks up, because $65 Million or less total for the first weekend in May is a stunning loss for Hollywood.

This time last year, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 had just come out and the weekend Box Office was over $156 Million. The last week of April last year was over $86 Million. The weekend before that was almost $143 Million, when the Super Mario Bros. Movie won its 4th weekend straight. The weekend before that was another $143 Million with $200 Million, and $112 Million for the first two weekends in April.

The average weekend in April last year was more than double what this weekend's box office is going to make.

I know a good deal of this can be blamed on the quality and quantity of movies that have come out so far this year due to the writers/actors strike last year, but it's not as if there aren't any movies in the theaters worth watching at all.

It's hot as hell here right now, but it's still early in the year and probably not that hot all over the country. If by mid-June the country is roasting and we're still seeing weekend after weekend with sub-$100 Million box offices, we're probably in bigger trouble as a country than anybody in the Media is leading on.

My guess is that a lot of people who wanted to see The Fall Guy this weekend chose to wait until it was on streaming instead of going a day without food this week.

Domestic Weekly Box Office Totals in 2023:

Up through the end of April in 2023, the combined weekly box office total was already over $2.54 Billion.

So far this year, not including the first weekend of May, the combined weekly box office total is only $1.96 Billion.

We're already 1/3rd into the year and we're looking at a 23% drop from last year's Box Office so far.

Bruce's words from his latest prediction article...

Quote:

In short, things don’t look great going into the “height of Summer.” A few million more might come from returning movies being helped by the holiday weekend. This is something that the model doesn’t adjust for over Memorial Day, because the strong competition generally doesn’t help returning films. This year might well be an exception to that rule.

We should cruise past $100 million over the three-day portion of the weekend, but this will almost certainly be the worst Memorial Day weekend of the 21st century, outside the pandemic era.

Hollywood crews are unemployed, fear LA's production decline - Los Angeles Times

By Kaitlyn Huamani | May 28, 2024, 3 AM PT

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2024-05-28/h
ollywood-crew-unemployed-fewer-jobs-la-production-decline

After more than two decades in the industry, Keith Dunkerley still loves nothing more than working on a set. The 47-year-old director of photography and camera operator, who’s had consistent work since he moved to Los Angeles 23 years ago, said his is “the best job in the world.”

Since the writers’ and actors’ strikes last year and the slow restart of production, though, Dunkerley said his work opportunities look quite different than in past years: He has worked only 18 days during the first five months of 2024.

“People outside the business don’t understand this is not a factory,” Dunkerley said. “It’s not like, ‘OK, the strike’s over, go back to the factory, turn the lights on and get the machines going.’ A lot of us knew it’s going to take some time to ramp things up.”

While Dunkerley supported his family through savings and odd jobs as a handyman on TaskRabbit during the strikes, the sluggish rebound has been difficult for him. He’s recently made more than 60 calls to friends and industry contacts to look for prospects.

What Dunkerley is experiencing is a part of the massive ripple effect of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that is still affecting tens of thousands of people working in entertainment and adjacent industries. Crew members, especially, have been hit hard.

“I am currently in the worst place I’ve ever been in my entire life financially,” said Heather Fink, a boom operator and director. “The industry is in a crisis. It is not back to normal. We are in debt.”
Heather Fink, in a white tank top and headphones, holds a boom mic on set.

Heather Fink has been working in sound departments consistently for 14 years, but she said the strikes left her financially vulnerable. “There’s simply not enough work out there,” she said.

(John Ales)

FilmLA, a nonprofit that tracks on-location permitting in the city, released a report in April that revealed a slow bounceback in production after the dual strikes. Local on-location filming in the first quarter of the year was down 8.7% from the first quarter of 2023. Television production was especially impacted, with production falling 16.2% from last year.

Paul Audley, the president of FilmLA, said these findings are startling when considering that film and television production saw a “retraction” at the start of 2023 in anticipation of the looming writers’ strike.

“What we’re facing is a combination of effects of the studios, as well as the streamers, cutting back not only the number of series they produced but in some cases the number of episodes they’re producing for shows,” Audley said.

With scarce work opportunities, many crew members are concerned about how they will maintain their health insurance, which is often directly tied to the number of hours they work. Those who have coverage with the Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Plans must work 400 hours in a six-month period to maintain their insurance. Many veteran crew members, like hairstylist and department head Jason Orion, who’s worked on shows including “Grey’s Anatomy,” said he has never been close to losing his coverage until now.

Orion was able to keep his health insurance thanks to a job on “9-1-1.” He said because he worked down to the wire before the 2007-08 writers’ strike, he thought he’d be busy until the strikes officially began. In reality, he had “an almost nonexistent beginning of 2023.” Even the shows and films shooting in L.A. now have slashed many departments, he added, noting sets that historically employed 20 hairstylists now have just two or three.

Orion said “9-1-1” was a “very hard show,” noting that crew member Rico Priem recently died in a car accident after pulling a 14-hour overnight shift. “We were all tired,

Nothing notable coming out this weekend. A few wide releases, but none of them are getting over 1,800 theaters.

This could help the overall numbers for the existing "blockbusters" a little bit.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die and an M. Knight Shamalyan movie come out next week. Bad Boys has a pretty good shot at the top of the theater counts when it does. I don't think M. Knight will get too many more than this week's newcomers.

I doubt either of these are really going to "hurt" any of the existing movies that are all going to flop already. We'll see what Bad Boys' budget is soon, but that's probably going to flop like everything else once we see how much they spent on it.

netflix revenue compared to hollywood ticket sales

ticket+sales

Four years ago, this was true, but things have gotten steadily worse for Hollywood: Netflix earns about $15 billion a year in subscription fees from its worldwide subscriber base. North American box office is usually between $11 and $12 billion. Of course, the studios get only about half of that box office (the other half goes to theater owners) So that’s $5.5-$6B. ( Netflix generated $33.72 billion in revenue in 2023. See how things get steadily worse for Hollywood? Netflix currently has 260.28 million subscribers. Up from 167.09 million members in 2019. )

Netflix’s New No. 1 Movie May Be the Future of Movies

People prefer Netflix instead of traveling to the movie theater.

By Sam Adams | May 31, 2024, 11:36 AM

https://slate.com/culture/2024/05/atlas-movie-netflix-jennifer-lopez-2
024-review.html

Over the long weekend, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos got a bit of a roasting for telling the New York Times’ Lulu Garcia-Navarro that Barbie and Oppenheimer, whose combined global box office was $2.4 billion, “would have enjoyed just as big an audience on Netflix.” It’s easy to chuckle at Sarandos’ comments, as it was when Zack Snyder told Joe Rogan that his movie Rebel Moon—Part One: A Child of Fire pulled in more viewers than Greta Gerwig’s theatrical smash. But as Sarandos’ interview was being mocked around the internet, movie theaters were experiencing their worst Memorial Day weekend in decades, led, just barely, by an underwhelming start for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Little more than a week after the prequel to the beloved Mad Max: Fury Road debuted to awestruck reviews at Cannes, the film edged out Garfield to win the weekend with a four-day haul of $32 million at the domestic box office, which was a far less robust showing than industry experts had predicted, and well short of its predecessor’s $45 million opening. Meanwhile, according to Netflix’s figures, more than 28 million viewers worldwide celebrated the holiday by firing up Atlas, in which Jennifer Lopez is a scientist who defends Earth from annihilation by a terrorist artificial intelligence played by Simu Liu. Vive le cinéma!

Common sense, and possibly even Ted Sarandos, will tell you that people don’t watch Netflix’s content the way they watch a movie like Barbie in a theater—or even the way they’ll watch Barbie when it turns up on Netflix. Although Sarandos, in his Times interview, tries to change the subject to the difference between theatrical and home viewing—his 28-year-old son, he volunteers, has “watched Lawrence of Arabia on his phone”—that’s not really the distinction in play. (People have, after all, been watching movies on their televisions for nearly as long as they’ve been watching television, period.) It’s not just the size of their audiences that made Barbie and Oppenheimer cultural touchstones, but the way going out to see them felt like being part of something, whether you were donning pink or mapping out the drive to the nearest IMAX screen. Netflix generates that participatory feeling with TV shows on a regular basis, from the unstoppable juggernaut of Bridgerton to the overnight success of Baby Reindeer. But looking over the list of their most-viewed movies of all time is like flipping through your high school yearbook, pausing over the photos of people you can almost remember, but not quite. God, this is gonna bug me, what the hell was his name … oh, right: Red Notice. . . .

I’m not saying that Atlas was created by artificial intelligence for the purpose of training viewers to accept the products of A.I. as a substitute for the fruits of human creativity. But if that were the goal, this is the kind of movie you, or it, would make, a slurry of recognizable faces and familiar tropes—a computer learns to swear!—that goes down easy and leaves no aftertaste. A.I. can’t make the inspired leaps a human mind can—it can paint like Picasso, but it can’t invent cubism—but it can nudge us to

Who would want to be seen entering a movie theater showing R-rated Deadpool or Joker? Adults with self-respect will only watch those two secretly on Netflix and never tell a soul about the icky experience out of shame. Remember X-rated movie theaters? Adults stopped going to those theaters when porn became available on VHS and Beta. The same thing is happening to R-rated movie audiences staying away from theaters and, instead, moving to Netflix.

Why don't you predict that Francis Ford Coppola's latest movie will make $1 billion? Nobody is more Hollywood than Coppola. Audiences should be screaming for tickets weeks before it opens at thousands of theaters. Or maybe not.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Megabudget New Movie Is a Journey Into the Heart of Madness (exactly like Deadpool and Joker)

Megalopolis stars Aubrey Plaza as a character named Wow Platinum. It only gets weirder from there. (And more likely either to go bankrupt or to make $1 billion)

Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis took 41 years to make. It might take as long to understand. Coppola’s magnum opus, which premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, is a movie of extraordinary highs and baffling lows, alternately dazzling and confounding. Sometimes, in the same moment, it’s both. When I asked colleagues who’d seen it—at a remote early-morning screening, added at the last minute to accommodate Coppola’s preference for IMAX—they looked at me like the mute humans in the Planet of the Apes movies, as if their powers of speech had abruptly and unexpectedly deserted them. No one wants to trash an elderly legend’s passion project, one that, after decades of trying and failing to get it made, he finally financed with some $120 million of his own money—not to mention one that is dedicated to his late wife, Eleanor, who died last month. But it’s also a film that defies and even actively resists description, one that sounds even loopier in summary than its 138 minutes feel. You have to see it to believe it. And even then, you may not.

Now for the loopy summary at https://slate.com/culture/2024/05/megalopolis-francis-ford-coppola-mov

It is not a new phenomenon when Hollywood realizes it produced a crappy movie but attempts to recoup its money rather than not releasing the crappiness. Audiences, except for teenagers and small children, are becoming similarly aware of how much crap there is. Instead of buying tickets, the audiences can watch the same crappy movies on TV for free.

I see that you still think Biden is to blame for low ticket sales. Trump is now a convicted felon because he used a corporate checking account to pay a campaign expense. I doubt either. People are craving a Gladiator sequel in 2024 just as much as they're craving a Twister sequel, and if Gladiator carried the same $200 Million price tag that Twisters did, they're just going to lose more money.

Joker 2 will be fine if they kept the budget low.

That's the same mistake that Democrats and the Legacy Media made for over a year when they denied that inflation was a problem until way after it was too late to do anything about it.

The economy is fine, but not for congenital morons or angry poor white trash. Hollywood tried to copy Marvel's methods. Not even Marvel can repeat the fluky success:

Avengers: Endgame forced an entirely new era of storytelling - Jun 3, 2024

https://www.vox.com/life/24159041/trump-abortion-marvel-ai-china-karda
shian-decade-explained

There will probably never be another movie like Avengers: Endgame, the 2019 film with a lead-up that wholly altered the movie industry and even the way stories are told. For over a decade, Marvel told one central story — Earth’s mightiest heroes working to defeat the great villain Thanos — through the MCU’s plethora of interlocking superhero blockbusters. In that era, each film, with its Easter eggs and credit scenes, built toward the culmination known as Endgame.

By signaling to its audience that all 23 movies mattered to the larger story, Marvel ensured each was a financial success, including a slew — Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Infinity War — of billion-dollar worldwide box offices. Marvel’s grand design made Endgame the second-biggest movie in history.

It’s not surprising that seemingly everyone in Hollywood tried to replicate this triumph, often at the expense of creative achievement. Studio heads hoped that they could grow and cash in on properties with extant popularity, the way Marvel had with its comic book characters, and began investing in sequels and spinoffs of proven IP. Marvel’s parent company Disney developed countless new Star Wars projects and capitalized on its hits like Frozen and Moana by lining up continuations of those stories. The company created Disney+ not just to sell its existing properties, but to house its avalanche of spinoff TV shows. Amazon’s take on Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings franchise and HBO’s interest in multiple Game of Thrones spinoffs could certainly be seen as trying to capture Marvel’s magic.

Across the board, the people in charge of the purse strings became less interested in original ideas, as well as in mid-budget films; it was blockbuster or… bust.

Marvel changed what kind of stories were being told, but also how they were being told. Competitors became convinced that audiences wanted a connected cinematic universe, a format that mirrored comic book structure. Warner Bros., which owns the rights to Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, tried its hand at creating the DC superhero universe. Universal also played with the idea, teasing a linked movie world featuring classic monsters like Dracula. Neither of those fully panned out — some movies were critical flops, others didn’t find large audiences — signaling how difficult it is to execute what Marvel had.

This tactic spread beyond the big studios too; indie darling A24, for example, has tapped into connected worlds and multiverses to tell expansive stories. Marvel’s other innovations have also lodged themselves firmly in the pop culture firmament. Easter eggs — embedding “secrets” into art — are commonplace today (see: Swift, Taylor), and foster fan loyalty. Post-credits scenes have been added to all kinds of films.

Perhaps the real testament to Endgame’s singularity, though, is that it wasn’t only rivals who were unable to replicate what Marvel was able to do. None of the studio’s post-Endgame movies have had pre-Endgame box office results, and Marvel is no longer an unstoppable force. The studio’s cinematic universe looks as vulnerable as ever.

What Marvel didn’t realize was that Endgame was truly the end of the game. In its wake — for better or worse — we’re left with new id

As of June 5th, Disney's market share in the Worldwide Box Office is 0.27%.

I don't even believe that's a fair statement, since that's not how I calculate movies by year. The $7 Million it has so far are from 650k tickets to see Wish late into its run, long after it was already known to be a huge box office flop.

Disney's true market share for 2024 so far is zero.

And even though I haven't put together any lists so far for the year, I'd say that Disney is doing better than almost every one of its peers by simply not playing.

Or at least that was the case until next weekend, when Inside Out 2 premiers.

Inside out had an insane budget for 2015 at $175 Million, but it came away with a worldwide box office of just over $850 Million.

There is zero chance it will replicate that level of success with the sequel in 2024.

If it cost $200 Million, it probably has a decent chance of breaking even if Disney learned their lessons and doesn't shove a bunch of Lefty messaging in it.

But I don't believe that Disney spent only $25 Million more on the sequel 9 years later, and I won't believe that Disney has learned anything until I see it.

This could potentially be the first interesting thing to happen to the 2024 box office all year. Almost none of the movies that have come out and flopped so far would have flopped on any other year besides 2020 when Democrats shut everything down for the sniffles.

I have no predictions at all for this one. I'm just looking forward to finally getting to see what the "new and improved" Disney can put out after a half year absence from the theater scene.

I already said congratulations to The Garfield Movie when it was obvious it wasn't going to flop, but I don't think I realized how big of a success it was going to be compared to almost everything else this year.

With its $60 Million price tag, it only needed $150 Million to break even. It's only been in theaters 19 days now, but it had already crossed that mark a while ago. It's now sitting at $195 Million and will cross $200 Million on Friday night.

It now sits at the 10th spot for the worldwide box office. It will claim the 9th spot from Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire by Saturday night if it didn't already do that on Friday night.

It is the only US movie in the Top 10 that cost under $100 Million to make. I don't know what the budgets are for the Chinese movies, but I'm sure they're a lot less than that.

Maybe the writers and directors have been smoking crack?

The Crow is remade

This is like the debate on bad song covers released as corporate entertainment compnay 'pop music' to consume but it all becomes a loss. Why remake film that is artistic rated, why remake anything that's rated 8/10 or above 75% rating

if you are to remake something then why not remake a bad movie instead of destroying a good film which is accepted as 'Art'?

We do not accept people remaking and re-imaging and re-imagine of books, changing characters into a junkie cross dresser Drugged out islamic Afro Black transexual or something
it would be unacceptable to reprintinng books with these changes, Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein, 1984, Neuromancer, Dracula, Ringworld...yet it is acceptable for Movies to do these to their original even when they are considered 'Art'
Nobody gets to rewrite The Canterbury Tales for example, it is timeless.
it is not acceptable to re-write Homer Odyssey Iliad, the Robert A. Heinlein pages, to rip out pages of Jim Butcher, Edgar Rice Burroughs, tearing them out editing them and re-writing them as your own forcing in personal politics yet it is acceptable in film because of studio creative control and studio greedy short sighted types?
maybe blame the modern art movement like Marcel Duchamp and Hollywood greed and stupidity for all this?

The Crow is being remade as the worst joker and why is it 'Jared Leto' cocaine heroin fentanyl meth style?

Would AI do a better remake these days

why does he look like the bad guy

Normally Hollywood could make a lot of crap and recover losses with a few block busters

today Hollywood destroying itself, out of ideas all remakes, but the lack of creativity and remakes are nothing new to report as news. There have been LOTR remakes, the re-imagining the Rollerball remake, Jacob's Ladder remake, Grudge remake, Robin Hood remakes, The Jazz Singer remake, Pink Panther remake, Terminator remakes, Carrie remake, Ghost in the Shell remake, Oldboy remake, Conan the Barbarian remake, Swept Away remake, One missed Call remake, Red Dawn remake, The Fog remake, Total Recall remake, Robocop remake, Ghostbusters remakes, the Wicker man reboot or remake, Point Break remake, Annie remake, The Karate Kid remake, Charlies angels remake, Mulan remake, Blade remake, other Comicbook Superhero remakes Superman remake the Fantastic Four remakes, and now the Crow remake.

In the past they would make money back with blockbusters like comicbook 'Avengers' movies, every year would have a few big hits like Oppenheimer or Barbie for all studios, now the pickings slim.

Crow done in Boy Kills World style?

The original movie had the physicality of Brandon Lee the son of Bruce Lee, he went on a stavation diet and used a fighting style that was more natural and less martial arts. The movie visuals, it had a visual Gothic look and music covers, included Nine Inch Nails and Rollins Band a band 'The Cure' also wrote the song "Burn" it had its own style like V for Vendetta it had a clear Good versus evil theme, it was a Halloween movie, Revenge or Vengeance
The Count of Monte Cristo, Ghost Rider, Taken films, it seemed like a Vampire at times like Dracula Untold, a religion and vigilante theme like Daredevil tv series, even making himself skinny and removing his combat training on the screen the acted role by Brandon Lee had a martial art physical and artist side to him. It looked fun, it had some humor despite its dark topic like 'Falling Down' moments of dark comedy, it was a supernatural movie a Gothic feel like Black Death or a show like Phantom of the Opera but with a modern atmosphere.

the remake
it has Danny Sallis Huston who can play villain roles

A Mid-Year breakdown of the Top 10 flicks worldwide in 2024 vs. End-of-Year 2023.

2023 Top 10 (Full Year):

Place / Movie Title / Worldwide Gross
1 Barbie - $1,432,340,485
2 The Super Mario Bros. Movie - $1,361,553,421
3 Oppenheimer - $976,120,348
4 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 - $845,468,744
5 Fast X - $714,567,285
6 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - $681,222,435
7 Man Jiang Hóng (CHINA) - $634,631,282
8 Wonka - $629,037,798
9 The Little Mermaid - $568,345,048
10 Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One - $566,644,143

2024 Top 10 (First Half of Year):

Place / Movie Title / Worldwide Gross
1 Inside Out 2 - $1,014,926,251
2 Dune: Part Two - $710,865,636
3 Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire - $569,907,104
4 Kung Fu Panda 4 - $545,608,913
5 YOLO (CHINA) - $479,597,304
6 Pegasus 2 (CHINA) - $469,847,217
7 Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes - $387,434,301
8 Article 20 (CHINA) - $339,663,274
9 Bad Boys: Ride or Die - $331,957,666
10 Boonie Bears:Time Twist (CHINA) - $276,297,758

Notable Mentions:

1. In 2023, only one Chinese movie (or non US movie period) made the Top 10. Man Jiang Hóng did not play at all in the US and still managed 7th place worldwide for the year.

2. In the first half of 2023, 4 Chinese movies remain on the Top 10 list. Two of them are close to half a Billion dollars and could very well stay on the Worldwide Top 10 list when the year closes. Boonie Bears at 10th place will be off the list shortly after Despicable Me comes out next weekend. I'm pretty sure there's no way that Article 20 (8th place) would survive on the Top 10 through August.

3. Worldwide 2023 Top 10 total gross was $8,409,930,989. Worldwide 2023 Top 10 total gross for only US movies in the Top 10 was $7,775,299,707.

4. Worldwide 2024 Top 10 total gross so far is 5,126,105,424. Worldwide 2024 Top 10 Total gross for only US movies in the Top ten is only $3,560,699,871.

Keep in mind that these aren't Cumulative numbers that are going to improve just because there is half a year left. In order for either of these numbers to grow further, it requires new movies coming out that top the list and push other movies off the list so they're not counted anymore.

The only real benefit to this for anyone is the US Box Office when they do make anything that will displace any of the current 4 Chinese movies off the Top 10 and/or prevents new Chinese releases from making the Top 10 list.

Now, a look at budgets and actual money made or lost on these...

What happened to that rally?

They currently have a movie that's going to gross over $1.5 Billion, making it the most profitable movie in the last 3 years even over Top Gun: Maverick, yet their stock has dropped $12 per share since Inside Out 2's release date.

https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/ent/chris-pine-star-trek-2.html

According to Chris Pine, the core audience for those Kelvinverse films were “the diehards,” and he said (channeling Star Trek fans everywhere) that Paramount should focus more on making films that appeal to those hardcore fans rather than “trying to please people who don’t want to see what we do.”

While he didn’t get into the gritty details, it sounds like he is calling out Paramount for doing things like making every cinematic Trek adventure a breathless action film when this is a franchise built on more mellow concepts like exploration, understanding, and philosophy.

The Stakes Are Too High

Before you write off all of Chris Pine’s thoughts here as simple pandering or pie-in-the-sky hopes, you should know that he is very clear-eyed about the problems facing Star Trek and other major Hollywood franchises.

He pointed out Hollywood’s obsession with making big-budget blockbusters, saying that it takes “half a billion dollars to make these films that you like” (we’re assuming he’s counting the cost of marketing into this).

These huge production costs mean that “for it to be considered successful and everyone to be paid back, you have to make extraordinary amounts of money.”

Chris Pine seems to think Paramount has backed themselves into a corner with Star Trek films, embracing the mentality that each one of them needs to have a budget big enough to make Quark’s eyes bulge out.

Then, because of the outsized budget, there is the perceived need to make the film appeal to as many people as humanly possible. The end result is the worst of both worlds: a film that appeals neither to general audiences nor franchise diehards and simply flops.

Perhaps reading our minds (maybe Chris Pine has picked up some mild telepathy from starring alongside Star Trek’s most famous Vulcan for so long), the actor proposed a simple solution for Paramount.

“I think we just make a much smaller film that’s more story-driven, more character-based, there’s less sh*t exploding…Also shoot it on film, not digital. And then you have the fanbase.”

Good for you, Chris.

It's too bad you're such a good looking guy. You're on the wrong side of the cameras here.

You're smart enough to recognize one of the biggest problems in the industry though... Years after we've been saying it, but way before the people on the other side of the camera have figured it out.

You've got clout and you're an actor. Why don't you just wear a $10k suit one day and walk into one of those board meetings like you own the place and lay it all down for them?

SPOILER ALERT: They all make a lot more money than you do. You could be even richer if you were sitting in one of those seats.

I'll never understand why Disney is so focused on live-action remakes when they literally own the rights to the Muppets. I would take a Muppet remake of a Disney Animation classic over a live-action remake all day every day.

Muppet Beauty and the Beast where the Beast is played by the only human actor and he turns into a Muppet at the end.

The Beast should be a conventionally attractive actor whom the Muppet townspeople continually call hideous until true love releases him from this curse and he shows true beauty - blue felt and plastic eyes.

I think the French used to be about a 2 Billion market, years back France easily was 3rd or 4th in the world. Then China, South Korea, Germany, Japan started to beat France, even Australia and Mexico numbers compare to France...Russia of course is 'out' under sanctions.

That's a loaded question. Hollywood isn't just a singularity.

2023 was not good, especially when comparing the production budgets to the worldwide gross overall, but it was better than 2024 by comparison.

That being said, Disney alone lost somewhere in the area of $2 Billion in 2023. I believe the "official" count the last time I updated that list was just over $1.8 Billion, but it's since come out that The Marvels, Indy 5 and The Little Mermaid all had higher production budgets than were initially stated and Bruce has those new figures up on the-numbers. It's quite possible they actually lost over $2 Billion with those updated budget figures.

And I believe that Universal conversely made somewhere around $2 Billion profit in 2023. WB despite all of its comic book flops had Barbie and Wonka and a few others and still managed a respectable 2023 take. Not everyone was a loser in 2023 for sure.

*I really should take some time and get around to completing that 2023 list now that we're in August of 2024.

Disney's only released 2 movies this year (if you're not including 20th century fox or searchlight), and they're probably going to make $2 Billion in profit on those two movies alone. Universal, on the other hand, has had quite a bit of bad news this year so far. Although Despicable Me 4 will cover a lot of their losses. I really don't know where they stand at all at the moment.

As for 2024, I really have no idea what those standings would be. AFAIK, nobody else presents the data in the way that I did last year, so I would have to spend at least an entire day gathering all of that data and making this years list up to date in my spreadsheets, and then another day or two converting those spreadsheets into charts for people to see here. (That is really a HUGE pain because of how dated this site is).

It all depends on the movie, I guess. Some movies aren't doing squat overseas this year while other movies are doing gangbusters.

I've seen you mention the "France Factor" twice this week. Do you have any proof of that? I'm not saying that you're wrong, but with all the work I've done gathering data on movies over the last year and a half it's something that never jumped out at me before. But I never was doing any country by country breakdowns, so there would really have been no reason for me to know this.

The Aliens movies should do well.

Though I have just about zero interest in watching it, I think at a budget of only $80 Million it's going to leave people wondering where all these other movies spending $100 to $250 Million or more are putting that money.

I think it easily gets back 100% of the budget this weekend, probably making closer to 150%.

Well that sounds like a goddamned masterpiece compared to Borderlands.

Literally nobody asked for this remake. Any Emo depressed kid in school has already seen the original and loved it, not to mention they're never going to re-create the lore and immortality of the original after Brandon Lee died.

Everybody responsible for green lighting this should immediately be fired and never offered another job in the industry again.

And unlike other movies Hollywood has ruined with endless remakes and reboots, I didn't even care much for the original myself. It is a mid movie.

China just got another entry into the Top 10 for 2024. It's on the low end, so it's just displacing a US movie that would have been displaced if the US managed to take over the top 10 by the end of the year anyhow, but China even being able to add another movie to the Top 10 in the last week in August is pretty pathetic.

US has the Top 6, then it's "YOLO" with $479,597,304 in 7th, "Pegasus 2" with $466,930,272 in 8th, and "Successor" with $438,580,182 in 9th.

So summer time came and went and the only 3 movies that managed over half a billion during the summer blockbuster season were 2 kids movies and Deadpool & Wolverine.

Can Hollywood pull out 4 more before the year is over?

Maybe. Some of the movies that they put out in December did rather well into the new year.

Nothing that remains in theaters right now is going to help.

Adventures In The Screen Trade by William Goldman (1984)

This book was begun at the greatest time of panic and despair in modern Hollywood history - late January of '82. Future film scholars may well term it "the Heaven's Gate era." And certainly that movie received more media coverage than any other contemporary disaster.

But only a few enlightened bookkeepers will know for sure if it lost more than, say, Raise the Titanic! or Honky Tonk Freeway.

During the holiday season of '81-'82, sixteen films were released by the major studios. Of those, only one - On Golden Pond - was a runaway success. And ten of the sixteen each lost more than ten million dollars. One major studio executive told me recently, "Of course the failures are upsetting. But there have always been failures. What's got us so immobilized now is that whatever it is that we're making, we're missing the audience by a wider margin than ever before. We don't know what they want. All we do know is that they don't want what we're giving them."

Perhaps the key word above is immobilized. By the end of February, only ten films will have begun production. At the same time a year ago, twenty-five had started shooting.

Again, this is the worst period within memory. By the time this book sees print, it may well be the best period within memory. The point being this: Movies are a gold-rush business.

Anyone interested in what follows had best commit that fact to memory....

What follows, generically speaking, is a book about Hollywood. It may not come as a total shock to you if I say this is not the first attempt to mine that subject.

All I can provide that is different is my point of attack: I have been, for close to twenty years now, a screenwriter. I have seen a lot, learned more than a little - most of it, alas, too late.

In terms of authority, screenwriters rank somewhere between the man who guards the studio gate and the man who runs the studio (this week). And there is a whole world to which we are not privy. And I thought it may be helpful to know at least something about just what is taking place Out There. With that in mind, I've interviewed a number of people who work the other side of the street: studio executives, producers, directors, and stars. By the time we're done, it's my hope that you'll understand a good deal more about why you see what you see on the screen.

With only 3 months remaining, I'm growing less and less confident that Hollywood is going to box out China from the Top 10 worldwide in 2024.

China currently holds the 7th, 8th and 9th place movies, which all range from $465.5 Million to $480 Million.

Deadpool & Wolverine was the last to beat them, and that was a while ago.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice isn't going to do it with almost Zero international interest.

Any bets on which movies still coming out this year that can gross half a billion?

Transformers flops or does it, so what else?

So at this time of year you have 3 more Dates for money...

1 Thanksgiving mostly a US national holiday but also celebrated by others on various dates in October and November in the United States, Canada, Liberia, and unofficially in countries like Brazil

2 Halloween typically a 'Horror' does well at this time

3 Christmas and New Years period a type of Animation or Family movie or Kids movie

Transformers One’s Box Office Could Mark Chris Hemsworth’s 2nd Flop in 2024
https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/transformers-one-box-office-could-
123647083.html

I think Hollywood has a chance to get more half Billion but Chinese can do it also. There will be more from Latin America, China, South Korea, India, Japan...could one of them get back into the Top Ten? Sometimes a Chinese film can do good in the November to New Years period, Successor 'Zhua wa wa' is still making money and starting to gain on YOLO and Pegasus 2
Mickey 17 is somewhat Korean but also Hollywood delays, Warner Bros but I think its delayed until 2025
India can push close to $310,500,000 but not half a Billion..impossible for now
there is also
Woman of the Hour from Hollywood a serial killer thing, probably too dark to make money.
Red One its Santa suits and Hollywood action comedy but its out November not December
Venom and Kraven...both Sony studio so its kind of Hollywood / Disney / Marvel but Hollywood will share the profit with a Japan company, I am not aware of any new Japan video game anime franchise but there is Sega's 'Sonic', profit might be shared among Paramount and Blur Studio and Japan's Sega
LOTR Anime Netflix
https://x.com/DiscussingFilm/status/1837884846086955163
It lacks something so why are they doing it maybe because The War of the Rohirrim cartoon only needs to make $200 million to turn The Lord of the Rings into a $6 billion franchise.
The French films nobody cares about them anymore, France lost whatever factor that made people watch their films...its uncool now and Macron makes the French culture seem moronic.
the South Korean films and shows stream well, Japan and S.Korea both did well on home DVD video and download sales but they don't make big money across international cinema
Mandarin / Chinese language is the big Hollywood challenger for now.
Joker Madness of 2... Folie à Deux ...seeing mixed feedback.
Moana 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will make money? Nosferatu should be out for Halloween but another mistake arrives, they release it December.

Factor in Election Year, movies sometimes to less well during election year, Hollywood has badly manged distribution and adverts I expect more flops before the year is finished.

I forgot about Joker 2.

I won't be watching that one, but I think it would have to be spectacularly awful to not break half a billion after the first one became what is now the 3rd highest grossing R-Rated film when adjusted for inflation. It was already going to be a hard sell for me after the first one. Lady Gaga's inclusion is what seals the deal on me not watching this.

Hollywood's going to need 3 more movies to crack half a billion and hope that China's peak is only around $485 Million if they want the Top 10 to themselves.

Interestingly though, this wouldn't be the first year that they didn't. Without going back through the years to look into it right now, I do know that China has had one or two in the Top 10 on more than one occasion over the last 10 years. I was surprised when I saw that. I was looking for something else at the time when I realized this.

There was Taylor Swift so...others will try copy that success box office formula

Could a K-Pop boyband thing make it into the top ten...but so far 722 opening theaters...maybe not good enough. However if it hits number 1 in some regions and countries it could cost others their box office profits

Nobody is going to replicate the Taylor Swift thing. Everybody in Hollywood thought that Beyonce would, and she pulled in pennies compared to Taylor. After that, it looks like they've all but pulled the plug on the concert movie idea. I think if Beyonce did well we would have seen at least 3 more similar attempts since by now.

In a world without Hannah Montana, Taylor Swift is the next best thing. I think the only person outside of Miley's Montana in the last 25 years that could have done what Taylor did last year was Britney Spears... 20 years ago. Christina Aguleara is probably an honorable mention and I think she would have done well, but nowhere near as well as Spears did. I don't think many people would have gone to see Jessica/Ashlee Simpson or Mandy Moore do a concert in the theaters during Spears' time.

KPOP has a chance to make the Top 10 for a weekend, depending on the group and how weak the Hollywood box office is on that particular weekend. Never 1st place, but a decent Top 10 showing. But that's still a really niche thing here in America. It may have taken off in other countries and stuck, but I think most people here outside of die-hard fans view it more as a novelty than anything else.

ETA: Actually, there's some REAL signs that the girls have already moved on from Taylor and if she tried to replicate her own success next year she'd fall on her face.

Swift's endorsement of Kamala after the debate actually seems to have hurt Harris, rather than help her. There are actually a ton of Tik Tok videos now of girls wearing MAGA and/or Trump shirts lip-synching one of Taylor's songs and then inserting some rap song with Trump in it at the end, letting people know that they're hot and 20-something Taylor Swift fans who are voting Trump.

Joker is absolutely a flop. It's not going to displace the 3 Chinese movies from the worldwide Top 10, which is what it needed to do to break even.

We're running out of time for that. I don't see Gladiator 2 doing it either. Because of that low international interest in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sequel, that's not going to come close either.

6ix, you claim Hollywood has falling ticket revenue because its movies offend your political sensibilities. But since Trumptards like you are a minority in the world, that can't be most of the reason. This can be: Hollywood is in a death spiral because its movies are for sale at the same time its movies are in theaters. This was explained 19 years ago when DVD sales were cutting into ticket revenue. Now it is streaming and piracy cutting into ticket revenue.
https://slate.com/culture/2005/08/hollywood-s-death-spiral-part-2.html

On one hand, each member of your family costs an extortionary price for a ticket at theater far from home. On the other hand, the whole family can watch the movie at home for free on their big screen TV with better picture and sound than at the theater. Which way to watch the movie? Such a difficult decision to make.

Hell... even after the box office picked up a little once summer started I'm still surprised to see Venom 3 get $60 Million. Comic book movies are dead, but I guess this one was far enough removed from everything else and did have a fan base.

They still spent too much on it though. It almost sounds like a modest budget these days at only $110 Million. That means $275 Million to break even.

I think it will get there, but why so expensive? It's not going to make a lot of money above that break even point.

comicbook movies seem to be more or less over, maybe not extinct but the era has come to an ungraceful end.

the trends in worldwide gross the past years, not all the same but in general comicbook superhero movies were an easy successful hit but now moving to a struggle and many loss with Joker 2 and The Marvels fighting for the bottom

culture has also changed, failure is tolerated leadership, directors, bad producers are supported...in the past "flops" would not be tolerated, heads would be on the block. There would be lots of anger no printed money, everyone after to call out DEI islamo feminist SJW politics put into tinsek town tv shows and movies. Nobody leads and very few can control "mid-level executives" or creatives....in the past this was different, the entertainment industry expected results in the show, music, art, visuals, acting and sound. Deadpool & Wolverine performance did good...that was the old Marvel entertainment...the fail was less tolerated in the past but today a company gets Blackrock Vanguard printed Fed money or a tax payer bailout in California the flop is allowed and the system just writes them off. Artistic Property destroyed, absolute incompetence continues, CEOs somehow keep their job while destroying an entertainment industry.

At this time of year, there is an official vacation across the globe or maybe not....while The type of 'Horror' genre usually does good this weekend. What vaction cycles does Hollywood make more money on? What time of year or festival do people go to cinema more...The Sun around our Earth equinox , Summer solstice, equinox, then some type of Harvest or Dead Celebration and a Winter solstice...months March, sometimes a May summer festival fits into a culture, then June, September, maybe another Dead or Harvest Festival and Yule / Krampus Pagan December Christmas NewYear celebration.

a free vacation time to go visit cinema or not?

the last week before election...so maybe bad for numbers during an election however you will also have kids and a mini Halloween holiday vacation weekend

Summer time is when kids are free in the Northern Hemisphere and get to watch more Disney or Toons...but does the world have an official Halloween Harvest season vacation?

Thanksgiving s a national holiday celebrated on various dates in October and November in the United States, Canada, Liberia, and unofficially in Brazil. Germany celebrates Reformation Day on the 31st day of October and All Saints Day on the First of November. South Korean's and Japanese don't have a Halloween, its kind of suppressed now, there is Hangul Day at the start of October the next big events are Christmas and New Years, the Japan box office is never really worth talking about they are not cinema goers. France has 1st of November All Saints' Day and Toussaint 11th of November Armistice Day but France is not the same cinema market anymore, its not as big as it used to be. According to 2 sources. Halloween was an immigrant festival taken to the USA, the origins of Halloween can be traced back all the way to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain originally an event that marked the end of the harvest. Parts of Canada celebrate the 11th of November Remembrance Day Jour du Souvenir. Tasmania and Victoria in Australia have some celebration or vacation holiday on 1st of November or first Tuesday in November but the rest of Australia does not have this vacation. Spain has the 1st of November All Saints' Day or Día de todos los Santos, Mexico and other parts of Latin America seem to have their own Halloween Occult looking celebration the Day of the Dead el Día de Muertos or el Día de los Muertos celebrated on 1st or 2nd November or earlier in October or later in November through other days, some argue that there are Indigenous Mexican or ancient Aztec influences that account for the custom, the Chinese have a similar vacation or holiday period Mid-Autumn Festival the Autumn / Fall season celebration of harvest and togetherness and 1st of October a celebration for 3 days called National Day. If your culture is from the Equator Circle of latitude its possible seasonal changes did not happen and did not matter so much with people, so that could explain why a vacation is not marked at this time of year but in other parts of the world there seems to be a holiday.

Looks like Venom 3 only got a projection of $51 Million from Sony. They probably lowballed that, so it should be a little higher. That's a bit closer to what I would have expected a 3rd venom movie to do in 2024.

It must have opened early outside of the US, because there's no way that it pulled in $124 Million internationally in the same time frame as it made $51 Million in the US.

So it's already at $175 Million. It needs $100 Million to break even. Assuming it's not complete dog shit and also assuming that the early openings don't alter the future results down too hard, it shouldn't have a problem crossing that milestone.

But like I said before... why so expensive?

Joker II Folie à Deux a very bad Hollyweird 2024 American jukebox musical

a possible 200 million loss for Warner Bros, the economy of a small kingdom nation or small country wasted, but bailed out by California taxes US Dollars up in flames.

It made $57k on Monday and $75k on Cheap Seat Tuesday in the states. It's not going to come close to $100 Million in the US sitting only at $58 Million now.

If you want a great laugh, check out the drops from the 4 weekends it's been in theaters. I've never seen anything like it. It dropped like a stone. And this is a great example of how a lower than expected opening weekend and large early drops effect the rest of a movie's run.

WEEKEND 1: $37,678,467
WEEKEND 2: $7,002,654 (-81% Drop)
WEEKEND 3: $2,146,800 (-69% Drop)
WEEKEND 4: $584,496 (-71% Drop)

From $37.5 Million on opening weekend to barely over half a million on Weekend 4. Unbelievable.

$200 Million is a very low figure. WB loses at least $250 Million on this one, or more than $60 Million above what they paid to make it in the first place.

Its only hope is that international figures continue to bail it out. Like the first movie, it is making quite a bit more outside of the states than inside the states. As of today, 71.2% of the box office is from overseas. I don't have access to any real international numbers except for whatever Bruce posts, in the almost meaningless way he posts them, whenever he gets around to them. So I can't say for sure how bad the crash was outside of the States since you have no idea of a weekly breakdown of international numbers looks like unless you were following the movie from the beginning by the day and documenting these numbers as they were posted.

I'm going to assume the international drop was just as bad as the US drop until proven otherwise. This movie needed $475 Million to break even, and there's a very good chance it won't even see $225 Million.
