Trump will be fine.
He will also be your next President.

I wonder if any of Trump’s fans realize that his standard stump speech is simply an invented fantasy from beginning to end?

Trump: “They also gave up Bagram [in Afghanistan], one of the biggest bases anywhere in the world.... And you know who has it now? China has it now.”

There were rumors back in 2021 about the Taliban giving China access to Bagram, but it never happened.

Trump: “Israel has an Iron Dome. They have a missile defense system. Three hundred forty-two missiles were shot into Israel, and only one got through a little bit.... We’re going to build an iron dome over our country, and we’re going to be sure that nothing can come and harm our people.”

Iron Dome, which protects Israel from short-range missiles, was largely funded by the US and some of it was co-produced by the US. In short, we already have it and it's deployed in the Red Sea (among other places), which is why all 342 of those Iranian missiles and drones were shot down. As for a bigger version, a la Ronald Reagan's SDI (aka Star Wars), that's for ICBMs, not short-range missiles. We've continued working on that since the '80s, but the technology remains problematic.

Trump: “We’re going to get to the bottom of it. You remember [Biden] said we’re going to find a cure to cancer; nothing happened. We’re going to get to the cure for cancer and Alzheimer’s and so many other things. We’re so close to doing something great. But we need a leader that will let it be done.”

We are nowhere near cures for cancer or Alzheimer's. This has nothing to do with political leadership and there is nothing to get to the bottom of.

Trump: “Our crime rate is going up, while crime statistics all over the world are going down.”

No. Crime in the US has dropped during every year of the Biden administration.

Trump: “Probably the best trade deal was the deal I made with China where they buy $50 billion of our product. They were buying nothing. They buy $50 billion worth.”

The agreement was for $200 billion and China never made good on it.

Trump: “Americans are being squeezed out of the labor force and their jobs are taken. By the way, you know who’s taking the jobs, the jobs that are created? One hundred and seven percent of those jobs are taken by illegal aliens.”

When Joe Biden took office the employment level of native born workers was 123 million. Today it's 131 million. That's an increase in the employment rate from 56.5% to 59.4%.

Joe sounds very senile but I don't see a third party rising winning second place, the Libertartain, Independent, Green Party, Vermont Progressive Party, Independent Party of Oregon, Texas Separatists , California Separatists, Alaska Independence, Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana, Constitution Party, extinct Whigs and Bull Moose Party, Social Marxist Communist party, Transhumanist Party.

Even if Democrats fail they comeback as it is set up for the 2 party system

Donald Trump Is Out. Are We Ready to Talk About How He Got In?

Jan 19, 2021

I’ve been thinking about Barbara Tuchman’s medieval history, A Distant Mirror, over the past couple of weeks. The book is a masterful work of anti-romance, a cold-eyed look at how generations of aristocrats and royalty waged one of the longest wars in recorded history, all while claiming the mantle of a benevolent God. The disabusing begins early. In the introduction, Tuchman examines the ideal of chivalry and finds, beneath the poetry and codes of honor, little more than myth and delusion.

Knights “were supposed, in theory, to serve as defenders of the Faith, upholders of justice, champions of the oppressed,” Tuchman writes. “In practice, they were themselves the oppressors, and by the 14th century, the violence and lawlessness of men of the sword had become a major agency of disorder.”

The chasm between professed ideal and actual practice is not surprising. No one wants to believe themselves to be the villain of history, and when you have enough power, you can hold reality at bay. Raw power transfigured an age of serfdom and warmongering into one of piety and courtly love.

This is not merely a problem of history. Twice now, Rudy Giuliani has incited a mob of authoritarians. In the interim, “America’s Mayor” was lauded locally for crime drops that manifested nationally. No matter. The image of Giuliani as a pioneering crime fighter gave cover to his more lamentable habits—arresting whistleblowers, defaming dead altar boys, and raiding homeless shelters in the dead of night. Giuliani was, by Jimmy Breslin’s lights, “blind, mean, and duplicitous,” a man prone to displays “of great nervousness if more than one black at a time entered City Hall.” And yet much chin-stroking has been dedicated to understanding how Giuliani, once the standard-bearer for moderate Republicanism, a man who was literally knighted, was reduced to inciting a riot at the U.S. Capitol. The answer is that Giuliani wasn’t reduced at all. The inability to see what was right before us—that Giuliani was always, in Breslin’s words, “a small man in search of a balcony”—is less about Giuliani and more about what people would rather not see.

And what is true of Giuliani is particularly true of his master. It was popular, at the time of Donald Trump’s ascension, to stand on the thinnest of reeds in order to avoid stating the obvious. It was said that the Trump presidency was the fruit of “economic anxiety,” of trigger warnings and the push for trans rights. We were told that it was wrong to call Trump a white supremacist, because he had merely “drawn upon their themes.”

One hopes that after four years of brown children in cages; of attempts to invalidate the will of Black voters in Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Detroit; of hearing Trump tell congresswomen of color to go back where they came from; of claims that Joe Biden would turn Minnesota into “a refugee camp”; of his constant invocations of “the Chinese virus,” we can now safely conclude that Trump believes in a world where white people are—or should be—on top. It is still deeply challenging for so many people to accept the reality of what has happened—that a country has been captured by the worst of its history, while millions of Americans cheered this on.

The temptation to look away is strong. This summer I watched as whole barrels of ink were emptied to champion free speech and denounce “cancel culture.” Meanwhile, from the most powerful office in the world, Trump issued executive orders targeting a journalistic institution and promoted “patriotic education.” The indifference to his incredible acts was telling. So much for chivalry.

The mix of blindness and pedantry did not plague merely writers, but also policy makers and executives. “The FBI does not talk in terms of terrorism committed by white people,” the journalist Spencer Ackerman wrote in the days after the January 6 riot at the Cap

Those were all people you fuckin' lunatics deemed "non-essential workers" and you put out of work.

Before Democrats worked with China to release Covid onto the world to stop the Trump Presidency, he oversaw the lowest unemployment rate in generations. Gas was half the price it's been during Biden*'s presidency. Heating your home in the winter was half the cost it's been in the Biden presidency. Groceries cost 40% less. Homes were still affordable.

Don't bark up the economy tree. You lose that battle 100 out of 100 times.

Feeling betrayed by people he thought were friends and allies, he’s hitting back by making the most incendiary charge one Dem can make against others: blaming them for Trump’s 2016 election.

A Biden source tells NBC: “Can we all just remember for a minute that these same people who are trying to push Joe Biden out are the same people who literally gave us Donald Trump? In 2015, Obama, Pelosi, Schumer pushed Biden aside in favor of Hillary; they were wrong then, and they are wrong now.”

That's a pretty legitimate charge there.

How come Democrats only tell the truth when there's no other option for them?

BIDEN OUT

Quote:

Dems Go Full Throttle On Kamala After Biden Drops Out Of 2024 Race

Update (1630ET): And just like that, the Democratic party has gone all-in for Kamala Harris - who did so poorly in the 2020 election that she dropped out before the primaries. Just hours after Biden's campaign manager insisted he wasn't leaving the race.

Oh...

Lefties from the Clintons, to the Progressive Caucus, to Trump assassination jokester Reid Hoffman, to Alexander Soros, are now firmly behind Harris.

Now the question turns to who's going to be her VP pick. Newsweek suggests these as top-5 candidates:

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro
A rising Democratic star, Josh Shapiro is often floated as a possible running mate for Harris. He governs a major battleground state and could help Harris make inroads among voters in the Keystone State.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper
Roy Cooper's governorship has been a sign of hope for Democrats in the Tar Heel state.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer
Gretchen Whitmer's name has long been floated as a possible presidential candidate, and a Harris-Whitmer ticket would mark the first all-women ticket in history, which Pitney described as "intriguing."

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear
Andy Beshear impressed many Democrats when he won a second term in the conservative state last year.

California Governor Gavin Newsom
Newsom has become one of the most nationally recognizable figures within the Democratic Party.

According to Polymarket, Shapiro is the top contender.

Biden was drunk for the first debate while Trump was high on speed. So? Since Trumptards live foolishly, they don't care that Trump is a liar, tax cheater, and crazy, but Democrats do care when Biden is intoxicated, which is why he is out. He should have resigned immediately, the old fart, but this is the next best thing, and less than a month passed before the decision was made.

How did Biden find himself in arguably the worst position of any incumbent running for reelection in the past half-century?

With the president flailing in the polls, his team took an unprecedented gamble by agreeing to move the first televised general election debate up to June 27. They worked hard to box out Robert F. Kennedy Jr. so that they could get Trump one-on-one. The president reportedly spent at least a week in full debate preparation mode, and they felt they had Trump cornered. Republicans had spent months, they said, caricaturing the president as senile and checked out, and therefore all Biden had to do was show up and clear the low bar of seeming to be in full possession of his faculties. Game, set, match.

But it was clear within 90 seconds of the debate’s kickoff that this was not what would happen. Biden didn’t just seem low energy and contemptuous of his opponent, like the bored, indifferent Barack Obama who showed up to his first debate with Mitt Romney in 2012. Biden seemed, instead, hopelessly confused, his voice raspy and barely audible, unable to complete consecutive sentences or push back on the uninterrupted stream of hallucinations coming out of Donald Trump’s mouth. Biden frequently sported a terrifyingly vacant stare. Anyone who has watched helplessly as an elderly loved one went downhill was instantly transported to some of the worst, most painful days of their lives. It was, in short, possibly the most politically damaging two hours that any living candidate has experienced.

There was never any coming back from that night for Biden. The only question in the days and weeks that followed was what strategy party elites would settle on to try and convince him to step aside and who, if anyone, they would coalesce around. As the Democratic political class fell into full-on public meltdown mode, Biden dug in. We still don’t know who did what and when, but clearly a number of leading Democrats reached out to the president to try and gently usher him aside, behind the scenes, in a way that would preserve his dignity and not cause him to get feral and stay in the race out of spite.

Harris will get destroyed. Every poll that's ever come out with that possibility showed her losing to Trump by double the margin that Joe Biden* lost.

Kamala Harris couldn't even take 4th place in the 2020 primaries, and was later hand-picked by the Joe Biden* campaign as a blatant diversity hire who they've more or less hidden from the public for 4 years after she served her purpose and got a bunch of college "educated" white liberals to vote for the first female/minority Veep.

Kamala Harris is a borderline-retard who fucked her way to the top and she can't even use old age as her excuse for being wrong about everything any time she opens up her stupid mouth. The only reason anyone like Harris graduates college is because she was a quota filling guest with a free ride.

SPOILER ALERT: If you thought the Joe Biden* debate was bad after 3.5 years of the Legacy Media lying to you about the mental state of Joe Biden*, just wait until you start seeing what idiot Harris sounds like with a mic in front of her now that all the focus will be on her. And god help her if she can't get out of debating Trump before Election Day.

You're finished.

P.S.

http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=66119

Now that's how you make a Tick Tock thread, Theodore.

2 1/2 days later, Joe Biden* drops out of the race.

I guess Nate Silver's model was bullshit all along, huh Second? I'm right again.

Imagine that.

If anybody is wondering why he doesn't just call it quits this very second since it's clear to everyone in the world that Joe Biden* can't even wipe his own ass at this point, let alone continue his job being the "leader of the free world", well here you go...

Don't worry about paying me for mocking all that up for you Joe*. I don't want any of you or Hunter's blood money.

Over 60 Billionaires are Backing Donald Trump for President Who is Running as Anti-Establishment Candidate

July 21, 2024

As Donald Trump campaigns for a second term as President of the United States, he has garnered substantial financial backing from over five dozen billionaires. This influx of support, revealed through recent Federal Election Commission filings, underscores the significant role that wealthy donors are playing in Trump’s bid for the presidency.

Key Supporters and Their Contributions

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and social media platform X, has pledged to donate $45 million monthly to a pro-Trump super PAC, America PAC, which was formed by his associates. Other prominent donors include venture capitalists Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, who have publicly committed to making large donations to Trump-backing groups.

You missed that Trump is on speed. You only have to watch his debate performance to see it. Or any time he is public. VP Harris will chop Trump into little pieces during a debate. If Trump wins the election, Biden will order his assassination. The Supreme Court specifically ruled that a President could assassinate a political rival and not be charged with murder:

Did the Supreme Court really just give U.S. presidents the power to assassinate opponents? We asked constitutional scholars their thoughts. On paper, perhaps. Liberal justices argue it did. In their dissent in the historic presidential immunity case, Trump v. United States, the court's minority claimed the decision did more — much more — than just help the former U.S. president potentially escape his most serious legal predicament.

You keep reminding everybody why you flunked out of college. Abstractions, including the simplest ones like what a Supreme Court decision means, are too confusing for Trumptards to comprehend. Trumptards get nothing from reading TRUMP v. UNITED STATES https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23pdf/23-939_e2pg.pdf

Trumptards get even less than nothing from reading a newspaper:
How the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling opened the door for a shocking question: Can presidents kill their rivals? A hypothetical scenario that lets Trump send SEAL Team 6 to assassinate his rivals has raised alarms for what a president could do without legal restraints, Alex Woodward reports

Joe Biden is allowed to assassinate Trump if it is considered a necessary action, defending the country from irreperable harm if it doesn't happen. Not any different than GWB and Obama were given a hall pass to murder anybody around the world they felt like via drone strikes before this ruling.

I know that you personally feel like it's the end of America if Trump gets reelected because that's what your idiot puppet masters at MSNBC and the NYT tell you everyday, but I can assure you that nobody was given permission to assassinate their political opposition with that Supreme Court ruling.

I won't bother explaining concepts like this to you any further because you're somebody else's brat kid and it's not my responsibility to make sure you know a single damn thing about civics and law.

Meanwhile, shut the fuck up, retard, and bury that Reaverfan persona as deep down in your sad little sack of flesh that you can. Your rhetoric is borderline dangerous for the 2nd time in a week, and you're just proving once again that it is people on the LEFT who are guilty of all the things they accuse everyone else of doing. They just had the pleasure of being told they were right by the entire Legacy Media the better part of the last decade and now that this media behavior has halted, everybody gets to see you without your clothes on.

Take a good long fucking look in the mirror. You are the bad guy.

Make no mistake about that, Second. You are EVERYTHING that you profess to hate.

You used the words "allowed" and "considered" necessary. Until July 1, 2024, when TRUMP v. UNITED STATES was decided, it was NOT allowed and was NOT considered necessary. No President would do it because there would be consequences for the President, such as going to jail. But the Supreme Court ruled Presidents can't go to jail.

On Feb 6, 2024, the Federal Court ruled that Trump does NOT have immunity. There was a trial and a 57 page long decision written in just days that Trump could go to jail for official or non-official acts. You can read that decision:

https://www.cadc.uscourts.gov/internet/opinions.nsf/1AC5A0E7090A350785
258ABB0052D942/$file/23-3228-2039001.pdf

Then the Trumptards on Supreme Court required six months to write a political decision that proclaims Trump cannot go to jail. Three non-Trumptards Supreme Court justices wrote that jail is the only thing holding Presidents to a standard of conduct. Without jail, Presidents could behave as badly as Emperor Nero, who also could not be sent to jail because he was a minor god to which some but not all Romans prayed. The Trumptards I know act as if Trump is one of their gods, a Major Divinity.

The true believers in Trump on the Supreme Court are respecting their god who was disrespected by a lower court. From that court's very blunt decision:
Quote:

And on August 1, 2023, in Washington, D.C., former President Trump was charged in a four-count Indictment as a result of his actions challenging the election results and interfering with the sequence set forth in the Constitution for the transfer of power from one President to the next. Former President Trump moved to dismiss the Indictment and the district court denied his motion. Today, we affirm the denial. For the purpose of this criminal case, former President Trump has become citizen Trump, with all of the defenses of any other criminal defendant. But any executive immunity that may have protected him while he served as President no longer protects him against this prosecution.

Biden’s continued candidacy was an insult to the intelligence of American voters

Helen Lewis writes:

Allow me to summarize the response from outside America to the news that President Joe Biden is not running for reelection: Thank God.

Here in Britain, the most common reaction in the minutes after the news broke was sheer relief. Relief that Donald Trump will not be allowed an easy path to a second term. Relief that the Democrats will put forward a candidate who is able to bear a full campaign schedule—defending the party’s record and advancing its best arguments. Relief, too, that the party would not be insulting the intelligence of voters by insincerely pushing a candidate that its leaders must have understood was a lemon.

The last of those has dominated my thinking since the disastrous CNN debate in June. Imagine that Biden’s staffers had gently shepherded him over the line, coaching him through interviews and propping him up through public events. Imagine that Biden had somehow won the election despite the evidence of the polls—and then, disaster. Within months or weeks, it surely would have become apparent that he was unable to serve a full term.

If all of that happened, then the American people would have, quite rightly, felt that they had been duped. Any sense of the moral high ground—something the Democrats have been keen to claim in the face of Trump’s very real outrages—would have disappeared. How can you ask the voters to trust you when you don’t trust them enough to tell them the truth?

Biden changed his policies in the last three weeks in order to save his campaign

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2024/07/biden-endorse-harris-vp-ao
c-bernie-sanders.html

Between the stump speeches and public appearances—and multiple closed-door appeals to his Democratic colleagues—President Joe Biden spent the last three weeks of his now-concluded reelection campaign doing something unexpected: rolling out a robust set of progressive policies.

He hammered corporate greed. He promised to make the rich pay more taxes. He pushed for the expansion of Social Security and called for eliminating medical debt. He started drawing up plans for Supreme Court reform, and promised rent control caps to deal with the high cost of housing nation-wide.

It started with his NATO press conference (the one where the president accidentally called Ukrainian President Zelensky “President Putin”) and it signaled a remarkable shift for the Biden campaign.

During general election seasons, presidential hopefuls almost always tack politically to the center, hoping to court undecided voters who are presumed to have centrist leanings. In the months leading up to Biden’s late June debate with Trump, this is exactly what the president did. His signature policies over that period were a hawkish, uncritical embrace of the Netanyahu government in Israel, condemnation of student protestors, and an executive order crackdown on longstanding asylum policies.

But after the calamitous debate performance that ultimately led to his historic decision to step down from the 2024 ticket, Biden zagged back towards the left, unveiling a handful of sweeping progressive policy commitments—some of which seemed to be brand new additions to the platform.

It’s unclear if this surprising new tranche of Biden proposals will become priorities for Vice President Kamala Harris, who is almost indisputably going to be the next Democratic nominee. Still, that the president pushed an emphatic vision of governing in the interest of the middle and working class was a welcome development—even if it was way too late to save his campaign.

There are several likely reasons for the rapid rollout of these proposals.

First, and perhaps most importantly, the proposals Biden embraced at the eleventh hour tend to poll extremely favorably. Expansion of Social Security and medical debt relief are well regarded by Democrats, independents, and Republicans alike. Ditto raising taxes on the wealthy, which has long been a priority of the president.

Given Biden’s historically low approval ratings this year, the move to refocus his campaign around popular policies makes plenty of sense. And it gave his campaign a way to highlight the vast difference between Democrats and Project 2025, the conservative policy wish list put together by a bunch of former Trump aides and affiliates, which is chock full of deeply unpopular suggestions, including abolishing the Department of Education.

American voters continue to hate Trump, who is scarcely more beloved than Biden. But hammering the former president on character seemed to carry less promise than it initially did. (That’s especially true after the assassination attempt.) The good news for Democrats is that American voters also hate Trump’s policies.

Advisers to the president insisted to the Washington Post that Biden had sincerely backed these progressive policies all along, but the timing is doubly notable for another reason—the avalanche of proposals (some of which may have be in the works for months) came immediately after a number of meetings Biden had with progressives in an attempt to shore up support.

Trump's The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act Failed to Deliver Promised Benefits

By Jean Ross | July 22, 2024

https://angrybearblog.com/2024/07/2017-tax-breaks-and-jobs-act-failed-
to-deliver

Benefits of the 2017 tax changes were overwhelmingly skewed toward the wealthy

The 2017 law changes disproportionately benefited the highest-income households. In 2025—the last year before the temporary changes to the personal income and estate tax provisions expire—households in the top 1 percent of the income distribution will receive an average tax cut of $61,090. In contrast, those in the middle quintile of the distribution will receive an average reduction of $910, while those in the lowest quintile will receive, on average, just a $70 reduction.

17 thoughts on the transformation of the race
With more to come later, no doubt.

Matthew Yglesias | Jul 22, 2024

https://www.slowboring.com/p/17-thoughts-on-the-transformation

14. The good news for Harris is that her basic political problem — she is perceived as more liberal than the average voter — is extremely fixable.

15. She needs to fix that by saying and doing some things that help make her public image more moderate, ideally things that are either true (“some people belong in prison and it’s that simple”) or lacking in policy substance (“my parents moved to this country because it’s the greatest place on Earth, and I think my party and our school system need to get back to teaching kids patriotism”).

16. If Harris does the right thing and moderates, a big question for the left will be do they let her get away with it (as the right has let Trump say whatever he thinks he needs to say on abortion) or will they spend the whole final stretch of the campaign whining (they way they did with Hillary)? I think the Biden formula of prioritizing unity over all else basically failed, but he was right to perceive that dissent from the left hurt Clinton. Progressives need to decide if they want to win.

17. Biden made a difficult choice to do the right thing for the country, and it is utterly inconceivable to me that Trump would ever set aside his interests or his ego for any greater good. Trump loves the slogan “America First” because it implies he’ll help you by screwing over foreigners, but I think on some level, we all know that Trump puts Trump first. It’s Joe Biden who just showed us what it looks like to put America first.

I have been saying ALL ALONG THAT TRUMP MAY HAVE A GALLOPING CASE OF ADULT ADHD. (There! I put it in all caps. Will it stick this time?) I wouldn't be surprised if there is a bit of ODD (oppositional defiant disorder) in there too.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, it depends on what you're trying to do. If you're required to sit and read ... or pay close attention to something boring ... it will make life difficult. If you're in the go-go world of television or high finance, it's a good fit.

It's great if you're running for office. Not so great if you need to be an administrator. Ideally, Trump should have a Chief of Staff who can follow up on all those boring details.

Why Trump Suddenly Thinks Picking J.D. Vance Was a Mistake

https://newrepublic.com/post/184106/trump-picking-jd-vance-mistake-bid
en-kamala-harris

Trump campaign officials acknowledged that Trump selected the inexperienced Vance, charged with all his techno-authoritarian ideas, to boost support among their own base, not extend a hand to swing voters, according to The Atlantic. Vance was a symbol of the Trump team’s assuredness that they would win in 2024. Come Sunday, that assuredness appears to be shrinking.

“Most striking thing I heard from Trump allies yesterday was the second-guessing of JD Vance—a selection, they acknowledged, that was [born] of cockiness, meant to run up margins with the base in a blowout rather than persuade swing voters in a nail-biter,” Atlantic staff writer Tim Alberta, who had written the piece about the panicking Trump campaign, posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Trump decried Biden’s decision to drop out in a post on Truth Social, writing that his team would have to “start all over again” and asking to be reimbursed for the cost.

Well, I haven't heard THIS before!

Quote:

Did Biden Quit?

Given the headlines which say he did you might wonder why I ask if Biden has quit his attempt to get reelected.

But look at 'his' rather weird letter which was distributed via the Joe Biden campaign X/Twitter account.

There is no official letterhead. The formulations are obviously not by Joe Biden and the signature looks canned.

I doubt this Politico account which claims that Biden posted the letter all by himself:

Steve Ricchetti, who’s been with Biden since his days in the Senate, drove to see the president at his house on the Delaware shore on Friday.
...
In addition to presenting new concerns from lawmakers and updates on a fundraising operation that had slowed considerably, they carried the campaign’s own polls, which came back this week and showed his path to victory in November was gone ...
...
The only other people with Biden in the residence when he arose Sunday were first lady Jill Biden and two other trusted aides: deputy chief of staff Annie Tomasini and assistant to the first lady Anthony Bernal. At 1:45 p.m., he notified a somewhat larger group of close aides that he had decided the night before to end his quest for another term, reading his letter and thanking them for their service. A minute later, before any other campaign and White House staffers could be notified, he posted the historic letter from his campaign account on the social media site X.
https://www.politico.com/news/2024/07/21/why-biden-dropped-out-0017010
6

This says that Ricchetti, Biden's aide, wrote and posted the letter.

Did you notice the Biden drop out letter isn’t on official letterhead?

I’m told by a source that Joe Biden didn’t even write this letter.

Source tells me that Steve Ricchetti, the Counselor to @JoeBiden actually wrote the letter and Biden Senior Advisor and campaign chair Mike Donilon was present as a witness while Ricchetti wrote the letter because Biden is too cognitively damaged to write a letter or comprehend what is going on.

This means the signature is likely forged on the letter as well.
Notice it’s not on official campaign or presidential letterhead.
That means it’s not legitimate.
@TheDemocrats are pretending to be Joe Biden whose corpse is literally rotting away inside the White House.

Besides abortion, Trump also lies about murder:

TRUMP, referring to Biden: “He’s the one that killed people with a bad border and flooding hundreds of thousands of people dying and also killing our citizens when they come in.”

THE FACTS: A mass influx of migrants coming into the U.S. illegally across the southern border has led to a number of false and misleading claims by Trump. For example, he regularly claims other countries are emptying their prisons and mental institutions to send to the U.S. There is no evidence to support that.

Trump has also argued the influx of immigrants is causing a crime surge in the U.S., although statistics actually show violent crime is on the way down.

There have been recent high-profile and heinous crimes allegedly committed by people in the country illegally. But FBI statistics do not separate out crimes by the immigration status of the assailant, nor is there any evidence of a spike in crime perpetrated by migrants, either along the U.S.-Mexico border or in cities seeing the greatest influx of migrants, like New York. Studies have found that people living in the country illegally are less likely than native-born Americans to have been arrested for violent, drug and property crimes. For more than a century, critics of immigration have sought to link new arrivals to crime. In 1931, the Wickersham Commission did not find any evidence supporting a connection between immigration and increased crime, and many studies since then have reached similar conclusions.

Texas is the only state that tracks crimes by immigration status. A 2020 study published by the National Academy of Sciences found “considerably lower felony arrest rates” among people in the United States illegally than legal immigrants or native-born.

Almost every politician I've heard running for office lies about something.

There is a list somewhere labeled "Biden's 900 lies" or something like that, which lists all of his lies just since he became the presumed candidate.

I know he's lied about everything from the economy to the southern border to stuff as trivial as having driven an 18-wheeler and how Beau died. The guy can't talk without lying!

Besides lying about abortion and murder, Trump lies about taxes and jobs:

Trump: "They want to raise your taxes four times. Think of it.... This is the only administration that said we’re going to raise your taxes by four times what you’re paying now. And people are supposed to vote for them?"

This bears no relation to reality. Nobody has any plans to quadruple taxes on anyone, or anything even close to that.

Trump: "Americans are being squeezed out of the labor force and their jobs are taken. By the way, you know who’s taking the jobs, the jobs that are created? One hundred and seven percent of those jobs are taken by illegal aliens."

When Joe Biden took office the employment level of native-born workers was 123 million. Today it's 131 million. That's an increase in the employment rate from 56.5% to 59.4%.

What the hell is Donald Trump talking about?

No. Trump didn't lie about abortion. That IS something that idiot Virginia governor Ralph Northam said because he's an idiot and apparently didn't realize that there would be people outside of his echo chamber listening to it.

And it wasn't too long after that the citizens of Virginia booted him to the curb for it.

JD Vance, now former President Donald Trump's running mate, once speculated in a 2016 message to a former college roommate that Trump could end up being "America's Hitler."

Vance had also written that year that Trump was "unfit" to be president, called him an "idiot," and described him as "cultural heroin."

At the time, Trump was running for the presidency for the first time.

Josh McLaurin, Vance's former roommate at Yale and now a Democratic state senator in Georgia, sat on the "America's Hitler" message for years before deciding to publish it in 2022, shortly after Trump endorsed Vance's Senate run.

In an interview with Business Insider, McLaurin said he released screenshots of the message to expose Vance's "hypocrisy" and the "gross inconsistencies" in his political career.

Now, the message, which also speculated that Trump could be a "cynical asshole like Nixon," is being used to highlight Vance's dramatic journey from "Never Trump" to loyal ally and running mate.

I approached Trump’s speech with genuine curiosity. I was for most of my life a working political scientist, and I have written speeches for politicians; I think I know a good one when I see one. No chance. To be fair, some people who watched the speech thought that the first 10 minutes or so, in which Trump recounted being injured, were good, even thoughtful. I thought they were terrible; although Trump and his people have emphasized Trump’s defiance in the moment after he was hurt, his blow-by-blow account of the incident came across to me as creepy and solipsistic rather than brave.

Contrast that with Ronald Reagan, the previous president injured in an attempt on his life. Karen Tumulty of The Washington Post reminded us today that Reagan appeared before Congress a month after he was nearly killed. (His injuries were severe and life-threatening.) Reagan was on the Hill to talk about the economy, but he started by thanking the country for its prayers and good wishes, noting a cute letter he got from a child while he was in the hospital, and paying tribute to the people injured alongside him. This digression took all of four paragraphs, a matter of a few minutes. “Now, let’s talk about getting spending and inflation under control and cutting your tax rates,” he then said.

Trump, however, droned on about how much the human ear can bleed, while the screens behind him showed huge pictures of blood on his face. He then went over to the equipment owned by Corey Comperatore, the volunteer firefighter killed in the attack, and kissed the helmet. Some in the crowd may have loved it, but I prefer a bit more stoicism in national leaders; I’ve always thought that Trump’s penchant for hugging and kissing flags was weird, and planting a kiss on the headgear of a dead man was even weirder.

And then things really went off the rails. If you didn’t sit through it, I can’t blame you; it was the longest presidential-nomination-acceptance speech on record.

Donald Trump Full Acceptance Speech at 2024 Republican National Convention

Basking in the friendliest audience he will ever find on this planet, Trump couldn’t help himself. He was supposed to be like a band at a concert doing a tight set, playing some favorites for the loyal fans, introducing a little new material, and gaining a wider audience. Instead, he blew the chance and ran overtime as he noodled, improvised, and even mangled some of his classics.

The speech wasn’t written that way, of course, but Trump can’t stick to a script. You can always tell when Trump is trying to read the teleprompter: His shoulders tense up, he cocks his head and squints, and he rushes through words he has clearly never seen before. It doesn’t help that Trump’s writers stuff his speeches with baroque constructions that are supposed to be soaring and majestic but that always end up sounding more like dollar-store Churchill imitations. Trump struggles with these complex sentences, and then he abandons them—and that is when the real Trump comes out, in all his whiny and aggrieved glory.

I do not have the space (or the endurance) to relive those moments with you, but they were the ramblings of a man who has serious psychological problems. All of it was on display last night: rage, paranoia, pettiness, desolating selfishness.

I’m always sorry to leave readers with these sorts of observations just before a weekend, but much of the media response to Biden’s troubles and Trump’s madness has been mired in equivalences that obscure what’s happening to both men, and what’s at stake for the nation. (As I was writing this, for example, a Washington Post newsletter arrived in my inbox and told me that the GOP had just wrapped up “an energized, focused convention.” That’s an interesting description of a Republican gathering that featured a se

Trump accepting the nomination:

“And there’s an interesting statistic. The ears are the bloodiest part. If something happens with the ears, they bleed more than any other part of the body. For whatever reason, the doctors told me that.”

More examples:

“They’re coming from prisons. They’re coming from jails. They’re coming from mental institutions and insane asylums. I—you know the press is always on because I say this. Has anyone seen The Silence of the Lambs? The late, great Hannibal Lecter. He’d love to have you for dinner. That’s insane asylums. They’re emptying out their insane asylums. And terrorists at numbers that we’ve never seen before. Bad things are going to happen.”

Another:

“In Venezuela, Caracas, high crime, high crime. Caracas, Venezuela, really a dangerous place. But not anymore, because in Venezuela, crime is down 72 percent. In fact, if they would ever in this election, I hate to even say that, we will have our next Republican convention in Venezuela because it will be safe. Our cities, our cities will be so unsafe, we won’t be able—we will not be able to have it there.”

So I watched last night to see if Trump, tamed by a brush with death, would strike a new tone or, at the very least, try to make peace with one of his most hated enemies: the teleprompter.

I’m always sorry

Quote:

California Sen. Kamala Harris is dropping out of the presidential race, citing a lack of funds. She informed her campaign staff of the decision on a conference call and later sent an email to supporters, in which she wrote "my campaign for president simply doesn't have the financial resources we need to continue."

Harris' departure, two months before voting and caucusing begin in the presidential contest, marks an abrupt end to a campaign that, for much of the winter and spring, looked like that of a top-tier presidential contender.

...

Harris kicked off her campaign in front of 20,000 supporters in Oakland, Calif., and consistently drew large crowds in Iowa, South Carolina, and other early primary states. She was among the top tier of candidates in both polling and fundraising and briefly surged toward the very top of the field shortly after the first presidential debate, when she confronted former Vice President Joe Biden about his early opposition to federal busing policies.

After the 1st debate, Kamala shot to first, giving senile Joe* a verbal smackdown on live TV.

At the 2nd debate, she was thoroughly embarrassed by Tulsi Gabbard, who was punished for that by not being invited to the 3rd debate. Kamala never recovered after that night.

She dropped out after the 5th debate because she ran out of funds. There were 6 more debates after that all the way until March 15th, 2020.

At the 6th debate, the first after Kamala dropped out due to lack of funds, there were still many other candidates on stage. Joe Biden*, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigeg, Tom Steyer and Andrew Yang were all there. Tulsi Gabbard, Michael Bloomberg, Deval Patrick, Michael Bennet, John Delaney, Cory Booker, Marianne Williamson and Julian Castro were all still campaigning, but none of them were invited to the 6th debate. Even crazy crystal lady managed to secure enough funds to keep showing up when nobody would bankroll Kamala.

So, to re-iterate, when Kamala Harris dropped out, there were still 7 other candidates that were actively debating on network television and there were still another 8 candidates who were not invited but still had active campaigns and campaign funds.

Even at Debate #10 you still had Joe Biden*, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Michael Bloomberg, Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg and Tom Steyer present. Only Tulsi wasn't there, still being punished for not playing ball by the DNC rules. That still makes 7 candidates at the 10th debate on February 25th, 2024... nearly 3 months after Kamala dropped out because her campaign ran out of money.

Long story short, Kamala Harris is what those in the biz like to call a quick cummer. A premie. A one minute (wo)man.

The only reason she is currently sitting in that VP chair was because Joe Biden* was told to pick her to secure more of the black vote and the white college "educated" woman vote.

You dildos are so wrapped up in the euphoria of being able to dump Biden* that you're all drinking Rachel Maddow's Kool-Aid.

Hate to break it to you though... There is no Democratic Party unity. Once Kamala starts speaking regularly over the next few weeks and embarrassing herself and the party, it's not just going to be me over here in the corner laughing. You're going to have plenty of members of the Democrat Party demanding her ouster before the convention too.

She's a gaffe machine.

The issues Kamala Harris wants to talk about

1) Abortion

In 2022, the Supreme Court overturned a national right to abortion that had stood for half a century, after Mr. Trump appointed three conservative justices to the bench. Polls show it’s one of the issues where Democrats fare the best with voters. Mr. Biden had been an imperfect messenger – a devout Catholic with a mixed record on abortion who seemed hesitant to talk about it. Ms. Harris has been a vocal abortion-rights supporter throughout her career.

In one of her few specific legislative pledges in either speech, Ms. Harris promised in Wisconsin that if “Congress passes a law to restore reproductive freedoms, as president of the United States, I will sign it into law.”

Without evidence, she also accused Mr. Trump of planning to sign a national law banning abortion, even though he’s repeatedly insisted that the issue should be left to individual states.

2) Donald Trump’s legal troubles

Ms. Harris, a former prosecutor and California attorney general, made it clear she plans to draw a sharp contrast with Mr. Trump, who has faced felony charges in four different criminal cases in the past year and has decades of legal battles over his business dealings and accusations of sexual assault.

“In those roles I took on perpetrators of all kinds. Predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So, hear me when I say, I know Donald Trump’s type,” she said to cheers in suburban Milwaukee before attacking Mr. Trump for being found liable by a jury for committing sexual abuse, running a for-profit university that was forced to pay $25 million to settle fraud accusations, and promising to back Big Oil in exchange for campaign donations.

“During the foreclosure crisis, I took on the big Wall Street banks and won $20 billion for California families, holding those banks accountable for fraud. Donald Trump was just found guilty of 34 counts of fraud,” she concluded.

3) Democracy and voting rights

Ms. Harris did not specifically mention Mr. Trump’s attempt to overturn his 2020 election loss, which led to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot where his supporters attacked Congress. Instead, she stressed Republicans’ move to push restrictive bills that make it more difficult to register and vote.

The only bills she referenced by name in either speech were the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, a pair of voting rights bills backed by Democrats that she promised to fight for as president.

4) Gun control

In both speeches, Harris pledged to push for more gun control, framing it as an issue of “the freedom to live safe from gun violence.” She promised to fight for universal background checks, red flag laws, and an assault weapons ban.

5) Trump’s tax plan

Ms. Harris also promised that “building up the middle class will be a defining goal of my presidency.” And she repeatedly blasted Mr. Trump’s plan for further corporate tax cuts. “America has tried these economic policies before,’’ she said. “They do not lead to prosperity. They lead to inequity and economic injustice, and we are not going back.”

6) Project 2025

Democrats have spent months attacking Project 2025, a playbook for the Trump administration written by former Trump staffers and close allies and spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank with close ties to Mr. Trump. The former president and his campaign have sought to distance themselves from the work’s most controversial elements, though some of those in the Project 2025 group remain involved in his campaign.

“He and his extreme Project 2025 agenda will weaken the middle class,’’ Ms. Harris said. “We know we’ve got to take this seriously. And can you believe they put that thing in writing? Read it. It’s 900 pages.’’

The Biden-Harris Climate-Energy Agenda Vs. The Trump-Vance One: Two Realities

Imagine not being able to get the warning about the approaching hurricane or tornado. How would you know when to evacuate to stay safe or board up your home or business? Or make sure your staff is protected? It’s not a bad dream, it could be the reality if Donald Trump takes office again. Project 2025, billed as the blueprint for a Trump administration 2.0 should it come to pass, literally calls for the “elimination” of NOAA, the agency that runs the weather service. “The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) should be dismantled and many of its functions eliminated, sent to other agencies, privatized, or placed under the control of states and territories.” That’s on page 664 of Project 2025.

Imagine companies being able to use toxic chemicals in their products without telling consumers, putting thousands of people in potential danger. Project 2025 calls for “Returning the enforcement and compliance function to the media offices (air, water, land, and emergency management, etc.) and eliminating the stand-alone Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assistance.” Enforcement should be done by scientists and lawyers, not by communications people (with all due respect to the communications teams).

There are so many areas of American life that would be completely different under a President Kamala Harris versus under a second Trump administration, based on the Biden-Harris administration’s policies and impact, but perhaps none more than in the areas of climate and energy.

As Vice President Harris said two years ago in Baltimore, “One of the most urgent matters of our time: this climate crisis. So, every day, all across our nation, we feel and see the impact of the climate crisis,” adding, “where communities have been choked by drought, have been washed out by floods, and decimated by hurricanes.”

Explaining that the biggest challenge for communities trying to increase their resilience to climate change has been the funding to do the work, she said, “For years, one of the missing pieces in our strategy to fight the climate crisis is that we have not invested at scale in community climate action. For years, the people of the community — folks who know what their neighborhood needs and how to provide it — have not been given adequate resources to implement climate solutions that match the magnitude of the crisis we face.” Then she said, “Today, I am proud to announce the largest investment in financing for community-based climate projects in our nation’s history. (Applause.) It’s a good day.”

The U.S. is the largest energy producer in the world today, even more than Saudi Arabia or Russia, according to the International Energy Administration. “More oil and gas permitting. Aggressive deregulation. Federal career staff relegated to the sidelines.” That’s how Politico’s E&E News summarized Trump’s and Project 2025’s strategy for a Trump 2.0 administration.

“To implement policies that are consistent with a conservative EPA, the agency will have to undergo a major reorganization,” reads the section on the E.PA., which was written by Mandy Gunasekara, the agency’s chief of staff during the Trump administration.” That’s how the New York Times put it. The EPA was created by Republican President Richard Nixon.

Trump promises to repeal regulations that protect the environment and reduce greenhouse gases, and to purge the EPA and most other government agencies of career employees, who he and his allies believe kept many of his extreme policies from being enacted in his last term. They plan to fire climate scientists and replace the

While VP choices aren’t generally thought to have large effects on election outcomes, the professors who literally wrote the book on whether running mates matter—it was called Do Running Mates Matter?—once included the following caveat in a summary of their research:

In order for a running mate to help a candidate on a national scale, he or she must be exceedingly popular; in order to hurt, the VP must be tremendously unpopular.

As it happens, Trump may have picked such a person:

JD Vance is making history as the least liked VP nominee (non-incumbent) since 1980 following his/her party's convention. He's the first to have a net negative favorable rating. Not surprising given how weak he ran in Ohio in 2022. Far worse than the average Ohio Republican. https://t.co/hlZziePkKe
— (((Harry Enten))) (@ForecasterEnten) July 24, 2024
https://twitter.com/ForecasterEnten/status/1815905253793095967

The aforementioned professors, Christopher Devine and Kyle Kopko, have further said that VP selections influence voters most if they underscore beliefs or suspicions about the candidate at the top of the ticket. (Devine points to Sarah Palin as an example; her selection in 2008 made voters question the judgment of prez candidate John McCain.) Vance has a history of provocative statements, having for instance defended the QAnon mass-pedophilia theory and called InfoWars founder Alex Jones, who claimed for years that the Sandy Hook massacre was staged, a “more reputable source of information” than liberal MSNBC host Rachel Maddow. CNN’s crack “K-File” research team has also found that, in 2016, Vance said he believed Trump had committed sexual assault. In other words, Vance’s addition to the ticket may not help convince voters that Trump is the candidate of decency and honesty.

Bloomberg: Democrats Finalize Plan to Nominate Harris Before Convention

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/democrats-finalize-plan-to-nom
inate-harris-before-convention/ar-BB1qvEaL

Quote:

Democrats have seized on opportunities amid crisis before to advance such an agenda. In 1960, John Kennedy won an exceedingly narrow victory on the strength of his charisma and then proposed the most far-reaching reforms since the New Deal, including a civil rights bill. These programs and a slew of others were enacted by Lyndon Johnson, with big majorities in Congress, only after the young president was gunned down on the streets of Dallas. Democrats now have another chance to continue the progressive agenda that Biden, a lifelong centrist, embraced in the White House because he understood the direction in which his party was evolving.

But Democrats will first have to address the reasons why so many people with working-class backgrounds voted twice for Donald Trump and seem ready to do so again. That’s not just members of the white working class who have departed the party in droves in recent decades; polls have shown Trump poised to scoop up working-class Black and Latino voters in potentially historic proportions. Trump and his vice presidential pick JD Vance have eagerly embraced the populist mantle and sought to co-opt some progressive critiques of the free market, even if they’d surely govern in service of plutocrats.

Too often, Democrats have failed to articulate a coherent vision of where to take the nation, apart from tolerating cultural differences and moving toward a greener economy, and neither goal speaks to those who have struggled to make ends meet. With Kamala Harris as their candidate, they have an opportunity to begin to change that image. The danger is that they may believe that the crisis they have gone through can be resolved by shifting candidates without addressing the discontents that roil the nation.

I would STRONGLY advise against this move unless intentionally losing the election is your actual goal, Democrats. It's a shit-show all around, but at least right now you still have outs and there's still time. Don't make any rash decisions until the convention, and by no means should you take a few days of better polling for Kamala after this shakeup as a sign that this is how you win the election. Even with that big bump over the last few days, you're still behind Trump nationally and it looks even worse in the Battleground states where it really matters.

And you should also keep in mind that for 4 years now you've been trying to gaslight the public into believing that the economy is great and that there aren't any people under Bidenomics that are struggling to make ends meet. You might have forgotten that you did that, but the people getting ready to vote in November sure as hell haven't, and barring some sort of economic miracle in the next 3 months, they're not going to forget about it before the election since they're all still going to be living it.

Just because you're admitting that there are some major problems with the economy now for some reason after years of denying it doesn't mean anything to anybody.

Stop lying to yourselves. When you do that, you'll find that you stop lying to everyone. That's the only way the Democrats win in November.

Oh... Right...

I also forgot how many black children became fatherless when Kamala ruined their lives for locking up black men for decades over weed charges.

I'm sure everyone else is going to remember that soon too when it starts getting brought up in ads every day. I doubt very much that Charlemagne tha God is any happier about a potential Harris presidency than he was about Joe Biden*'s.

Not a great look when you're already bleeding black voters with no apparent ability to plug that leak this time, Democrats.

All you're going to have left is white college "educated" idiots soon.

It’s Time for Democrats to Break With Biden’s Addled Gaza Policy

Biden’s approach to Gaza is incoherent. A new candidate could break with his confused course for good.

By Malcolm Harris | July 23 2024, 10:45 a.m.

https://theintercept.com/2024/07/23/biden-gaza-israel-war-democrats-ha

From the beginning, something has been off about President Joe Biden’s approach to the October 7 Hamas attack and Israel’s genocidal invasion of Gaza.

Even by the low standards of America’s steadfast support for Israel’s occupation of Palestine and Biden’s own long-standing Zionism, he’s been careless: endorsing baseless Israeli propaganda, bear-hugging the notoriously unreliable Benjamin Netanyahu, and slandering his own supporters as antisemites.

The disastrous presidential debate, and Biden’s decision to bow out of the race, has given us a new way to understand what’s been happening. Maybe Biden’s approach has been thoughtless because the president is having trouble thinking.

In retrospect, Biden’s incapacity has been on display since the first days following the October 7 raid. “I never really thought that I would see and have confirmed pictures of terrorists beheading children,” the president said, repeating a gruesome but uncorroborated rumor.

The press raced to clarify: Had Biden seen evidence that the Israelis were keeping secret? White House staff explained that the president was merely referring to Israeli media reports. We could chalk it up to a gaffe at a highly charged moment, except that Biden kept repeating the charge, leading Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler to accuse the president of exaggerating under the headline “Biden yet again says Hamas beheaded babies. Has new evidence emerged?” The answer was “No.”

Joe Biden Keeps Repeating His False Claim That He Saw Pictures of Beheaded Babies

The Intercept’s Jeremy Scahill called Biden’s constant invocation of the fantastical beheaded babies story “inexplicable,” but now we know better. As two Harvard researchers wrote in a 2020 peer-reviewed study titled “Aging in an Era of Fake News,” those in late adulthood tend to have “difficulty detecting lies,” and they place “less emphasis on accuracy when communicating.” Obviously this does not apply to all older adults — Sen. Bernie Sanders, for example, has remained notably sharp into his 80s — but after what we saw on the debate stage and in subsequent interviews, I find it hard to argue that it doesn’t fit Biden. At very least, it’s an explanation that fits the facts.

If insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result, then how to describe Biden’s plan to break Yemen’s hold on Red Sea shipping lanes? When asked if U.S. airstrikes were working, Biden told the press, “When you say working, are they stopping the Houthis? No. Are they going to continue? Yes.” It’d be easier to call this another gaffe if that weren’t exactly what happened. Operation Prosperity Guardian airstrikes have killed dozens of Yemenis, and two Navy SEALs were lost at sea, but there has never been any hint of success for the Western alliance.

Netanyahu thanks U.S. for support during "crossroads of history," calls protesters "useful idiots"

U.S. Capitol Police expected large-scale demonstrations during Netanyahu's visit and the agency beefed up security around the Capitol. About 200 protesters were arrested Tuesday for demonstrating inside a congressional building, according to Capitol Police. The agency said it used pepper spray against protesters on Wednesday when part of the crowd "started to become violent."

Netanyahu criticized the pro-Palestinian protests in the U.S., calling them "useful idiots."

"Some of these protesters hold up signs proclaiming, 'Gays for Gaza,'" Netanyahu said. "They might as well hold up signs saying, 'Chickens for KFC.' These protesters chant, 'From the river to the sea,' but many don't have a clue what river and what sea they're talking about."

I fuckin' love it. Netanyahu bringing the fire and burning down the absolute dumbest people currently living legally in America.

Biden gives Oval Office speech after dropping out of 2024 election

Biden failed, failed, failed to mention that Trump refused to be at Biden’s inauguration.

“To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th,” Trump tweeted, making formal what many had long assumed: that Trump would eschew the traditional step of personally demonstrating the peaceful hand-off of power to President-elect Joe Biden. Jan 8, 2021

Trump became the first outgoing president to refuse to attend the inauguration of his successor since 1869, when President Andrew Johnson stayed in the White House as Ulysses S. Grant was sworn in as the 18th president. Slave-owner Johnson pardoned all the Confederates left alive after Grant tried to kill them, the source of Johnson’s bitterness toward Grant.

The Trumpist justices on the Supreme Court had a very serious problem: They needed to keep their guy out of prison for trying to overthrow the government. The right-wing justices had to do this while still attempting to maintain at least a pretense of having ruled on the basis of the law and the Constitution rather than mere partisan instincts.

So they settled on what they thought was a very clever solution: They would grant the presidency the near-unlimited immunity Donald Trump was asking for, while writing the decision so as to keep the power to decide which presidential acts would be “official” and immune to criminal prosecution, and which would be “unofficial” and therefore not. The president is immune, but only when the justices say he is. The president might seem like a king, but the justices can withhold the crown.

The Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity combines with its regulatory decisions this term to remake the executive branch into the ideal right-wing combination of impotence and power: too weak to regulate, restrain, or punish private industry for infractions, but strong enough for the president to order his political opponents murdered or imprisoned. To ordinary people, the president is a king; to titans of industry, he is a pawn. Given the work the Trump justices have done here, the billionaire class’s affection for Trump, often presented as counterintuitive, is not difficult to understand.

Yet when it comes to the justices’ decision on immunity, they were too clever by half. They seem to believe that when a president goes too far for their taste, they can declare that he’s not immune and constrain him. But there is danger in a ruling that invites presidents to test the limits of their power. By the time a rogue president goes too far, he is unlikely to care what the Supreme Court says. A president unbound by the law is shackled only by the dictates of his own conscience, and a president without a conscience faces no restraint at all. And because the Court ruled as it did, when it did, and on behalf of a man lawless enough to try to overturn an election, Americans may pay for the justices’ hubris sooner rather than later.

Until the justices had to find a way to keep Donald Trump out of prison for trying to stay in office after losing an election, few people believed that the presidency was as unbound from the law as the Supreme Court has now made it.

Trump’s newly announced running mate, J. D. Vance, has said, “I think that what Trump should do, if I was giving him one piece of advice: Fire every single midlevel bureaucrat, every civil servant in the administrative state, replace them with our people. And when the courts stop you,” he went on, “stand before the country, and say” — he quoted Andrew Jackson, giving a challenge to the entire constitutional order — “the chief justice has made his ruling. Now let him enforce it.”

This is not a view of executive power that is going to submit to whatever legal technicalities the justices might use to restrain it, if they even wanted to.

Democrats Are Sounding the Alarm About Project 2025. What’s in It?

We read the 800-plus-page blueprint for a second Trump administration so you don’t have to.

By Shirin Ali | July 25, 2024, 5:40 AM

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2024/07/project-2025-summary-histo
ry-goals-donald-trump.html

Why was Project 2025 created?

When Trump took office for the first time, his presidential transition was chaotic. He fired the initial transition staff and threw out their guidance, and hired a new team that struggled to set an agenda for the president’s term. The Heritage Foundation created Project 2025 so that if Trump returns to the White House next year, the transition has already been thought through and Trump can immediately get busy enacting his agenda.

Is Trump actually going to act on these recommendations?

The former president was a fan of the Heritage Project back in 2022. Speaking at a dinner the think tank hosted, he seemed to nod to the idea of Project 2025 himself: “This is a great group, and they’re going to lay the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what our movement will do,” said Trump.

Trump’s assistant press secretary Karoline Leavitt also appeared in a Heritage Foundation promotional video last year that sought to recruit people for Project 2025’s training program. And Trump’s super PAC has been running ads promoting a website called Trump Project 2025.

However, a week before the Republican National Convention was set to begin in Wisconsin, Trump abruptly distanced himself from the Heritage Foundation plan. The Heritage Foundation, for its part, claims that the Trump administration embraced 64 percent of its policy proposals. Much of the plan itself — overhauling immigration policy and gutting federal agencies — falls in line with policy Trump has publicly supported.

All of that ugly backstabbing going on in the DNC right now!

"They" got rid of Joe, not bc he wasn't competent to be President, or even competent as a meat puppet, but bc "they" couldn't engineer an election hard enough to push Joe across the line. If they thought they could have done that, they would have been happy to have the equivalent of a blue screen of death sitting in the Oval Office.

It's easy so see that Joe's family and immediate (neocon) appointees had an interest in riding Joe to his death. But there are so many possible anti–Joe factions it's hard to ID them all.

We have been told many times that Kamala is Obama's person. Certainly, there is a faction behind Obama. His syle of "leading from behind" ... always engineering in the background... sounds like CIA to me.

Then there is the Clinton faction that needed to be satisfied. I wonder if they made a deal for Harris' VP or Cabinet in return for support.

It took a long time for Pelosi to get onboard, but ultimately the DNC had to recognize that Joe was toast.

Those investors in Project Ukraine... wow. Gonna take a big haircut! I'm sure a deal was made with them, too. Money will continue to flow, even after Russia wins. Gotta keep those donors happy!

So I think they've been putting an election strategy together, including asasination, to get Kamala elected but keept policies mostly by the same.

But I honestly don't think a Kamala election would do much in the medium term. Both Russia and China already know that the USA's neocon policies are deeply entrenched in DC, so Russia will keep fighting and China will keep picking up the economic pieces. And no matter what lipstick they try to put on the pig that is USA establishment policy, that lipstick will last only through Kamalas first year (assuming she even gets elected).

J.D. Vance has made it impossible for Trump to run away from Project 2025. Vance wrote the foreword for a new book by Project 2025’s architect — and has backed some of its most extreme ideas.

Former President Donald Trump has lately been trying to distance himself from Project 2025, claiming it was cooked up by the “severe right” and that he doesn’t know anything about it.

But it turns out the severe right is coming from inside the house.

Kevin Roberts, the self-proclaimed “head” of Project 2025, has a book coming out in September — and the book’s foreword is written by Trump’s vice presidential candidate, J.D. Vance, who lavishly praises its ideas.

“Never before has a figure with Roberts’s depth and stature within the American Right tried to articulate a genuinely new future for conservatism,” Vance writes, according to the book’s Amazon page. “We are now all realizing that it’s time to circle the wagons and load the muskets. In the fights that lay ahead, these ideas are an essential weapon.”

What ideas? Like Vance, Roberts is obsessed with the idea that the left controls major American institutions — he lists Ivy League colleges, the FBI, the New York Times, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the Department of Education and even the Boy Scouts of America. The book argues that “conservatives need to burn down” these institutions if “we’re to preserve the American way of life.”

Obviously, this poses a problem for Trump’s attempts to distance himself from the virally unpopular Project 2025 and its lengthy agenda for what he should do if he wins, which includes proposals to restrict abortion access and centralize executive power in the presidency.

And it’s one more indication that Trump’s pick of Vance might be politically problematic for him. Vance has a fascination with provocative and extreme far-right thinkers, and a history of praising their ideas. He is not a running mate tailored to win over swing voters who are concerned Trump might be too extreme — quite the opposite.

Patriotism and the Harris campaign

Eric Kramer | July 25, 2024 10:30 am

Here is the campaign speech Harris delivered in Wisconsin:

"Remarks by Vice President Harris at a Political Event"
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2024/07/23/r
emarks-by-vice-president-harris-at-a-political-event-10
/

It’s a good speech: short, to the point, and upbeat. She hits on the right issues: Trump is a criminal, abortion, economic opportunity, Republicans cannot be trusted with Social Security and Medicare, etc.

A patriotic framing that emphasizes that the United States is a great country could help present this bill of particulars in a compelling way. The basic message would be “Yes, we have our problems. We can and will address them. But along the way we must not lose sight of the fact that this is a great country.”

This basic idea can be cashed out in many ways depending on the issue. For example:

1) Yes, we have an immigration problem. We can fix this – in fact, immigration is already sharply lower than it was just a few months ago. And I promise to work with Republicans on a permanent legislation solution that will secure our border and ensure that America can still benefit from the vitality of immigrants. But let’s not lose sight of why so many people want to live here in the first place. This is the greatest country on earth. No one is trying to move to Russia or China or Iran, but people all over the world want to come here.

2) We have a phenomenally strong economy. Yes, we had too much inflation as the economy started humming again after the COVID-19 epidemic. But inflation is under control now, and the economy is very strong – stronger than it was under Donald Trump, and stronger than the economies of other major countries. Our goal now should be to spread economic opportunity across the country, especially to areas that have not enjoyed strong economic growth in the past. But let’s not lose sight of the fact that our economy is the envy of the world, and it is stronger today than it has been in many years.

You could tell similar stories about many other issues.

Focusing on the fact that we live in a great country is a good campaign theme for democrats for several reasons.

It counters the impression that Democrats are not patriotic.

Focusing on problems without emphasizing what is right about America is dangerous: If everything is terrible, maybe we need an authoritarian to set things right. It’s not an accident that Trump’s speeches are relentlessly negative.

Focusing on what is great about American will help Harris avoid being tarred with the perceived failures of the Biden administration. These perceived failures – especially on immigration and inflation – need to be addressed and contextualized. The way to do this is by putting them in a comparative perspective.

Not A Surprise:
Trump made at least 10 false claims about Kamala Harris in a single rally speech

By Daniel Dale | Thu July 25, 2024

https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/25/politics/fact-check-trump-false-claims-
kamala-harris/index.html

Trump, speaking in North Carolina, attacked Harris at length with a flurry of assertions about her personal and political past, her record as vice president and her policy stances. We’re still looking into some of his claims, but at least 10 were wrong.

Here is a fact check.

#1) Harris and the retirement age

Discussing Social Security, Trump claimed of President Joe Biden and Harris: “They’re talking about, he was talking, she’s talking about – lifting the retirement age.”

Facts First: This claim is false about Harris. She has not spoken in favor of raising the age for receiving Social Security retirement benefits. (Biden did, as a US senator in the 2000s and prior, express support for or openness to raising the retirement age, but he has been a vocal opponent of the idea as president.)

Harris has supported increasing, not reducing, Social Security benefits. In 2019, about two years before she became vice president, she co-sponsored a bill from Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, called the Social Security Expansion Act, that would boost Social Security benefits by raising payroll taxes on high earners.

#2) Harris and abortion

Trump said, “She wants abortions in the eighth and ninth month of pregnancy, that’s fine with her, right up until birth, and even after birth – the execution of a baby.”

Facts First: Trump’s claim that Harris supports the execution of babies after birth is false. She has never said anything to endorse post-birth murder, which is illegal everywhere in the country; Trump has frequently claimed that some Democratic states allow such post-birth executions, but that claim is false, too.

Harris, a vocal supporter of abortion rights, has declined to endorse specific limits on how late in a pregnancy an abortion should be permitted to occur. According to data published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, just 0.9% of reported abortions in 2020 occurred at 21 weeks gestation or later. Many of these abortions occur because of serious health risks or lethal fetal anomalies.

Harris has called for legislation restoring the protections of the Roe v. Wade decision that was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022; Roe allowed states to restrict abortion after the point of fetal viability, often considered to be around 23 to 24 weeks gestation, with exceptions for abortions necessary to protect the patient’s life or health. As a senator and vice president, Harris has supported a bill that would, like Roe, ensure abortion was available at least until fetal viability – and would also prohibit various state policies that make the process of providing or obtaining an abortion more onerous.

Asked about Trump’s comments, the Trump campaign provided various examples of Harris taking liberal positions on abortion policy and declining to endorse specific limits - but nothing to substantiate the claim that she supports “the execution of a baby” after birth.

#3) Trump claimed, “Kamala even wants to pass laws to outlaw red meat to stop climate change.” to #10) Trump claimed that Harris, a lawyer who was elected as San Francisco’s district attorney and then as California’s attorney general, “failed her law exams.” Then he continued, “You know that? She couldn’t pass her bar. She couldn’t pass her bar exams…Does anyone know that? … But she’s gonna be a great president, right? No, she couldn’t pass her bar exams. She couldn’t pass anything. Couldn’t pass everything. She couldn’t pass anything.”

Ever since President Biden’s Sunday announcement that he would not seek re-election, clearly because of age, I keep thinking about Donald Trump’s and JD Vance’s contemptuous reactions to one of the most difficult personal decisions a president has ever made, and what it says about their character.

“The Democrats pick a candidate, Crooked Joe Biden, he loses the Debate badly, then panics, and makes mistake after mistake, is told he can’t win, and decide they will pick another candidate, probably Harris,” Trump wrote on social media on Monday. He later added: “It’s not over! Tomorrow Crooked Joe Biden’s going to wake up and forget that he dropped out of the race today!”

Not to be out-lowballed by his boss, Vance wrote on social media: “Joe Biden has been the worst President in my lifetime and Kamala Harris has been right there with him every step of the way.”

All they had to say was: “President Biden served his country for five decades and at this moment we thank him for that service. Tomorrow our campaign begins against his replacement. Bring her on.’’

I can guarantee you that is what Biden would have said if the shoe were on the other foot. Because he is not a bully.

Biden’s good character shone through on Wednesday night in his dignified, country-before-self address at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. As I watched and listened, I remembered a lunch I had with him in May 2022 in the dining room next to the Oval Office. After we were done and he was walking me past the Resolute Desk, I mentioned to him a reading-literacy project that my wife, Ann, was working on that she thought might interest Dr. Jill Biden. The president got totally excited about the idea and said, “Let’s call your wife. What’s her number?’’

He then took a cellphone out of his pocket, dialed it and handed it to me.

“Honey,” I said, “I’ve got someone here who wants to talk to you.’’

“I’m in a meeting,” Ann replied. “I can’t talk now.’’

“No, no, you’re going to want to talk to him. It’s the president.”

Then I handed the phone back to Biden, who engaged her in a conversation about reading and how much his wife was passionate about that subject, too.

Look, I’ve been to the rodeo — this is what smart politicians do. But there is one difference with Joe Biden that I observed over the years: It’s how much he authentically enjoyed it, how much he enjoyed talking to people outside his bubble and giving them a chance to say, “I got to meet the president. He talked to me!”

That sort of kindness came naturally to him. It brought him joy. And I have no doubt that Trump’s and Vance’s venomous first reactions to Biden’s resignation came naturally to them too.

I’m sure it brought them joy. But it sure left me wondering: What is wrong with you people?

"License to steal": Donald Trump's history of fraud emerges as a new threat with SCOTUS decision

Donald Trump is a fraud and a con artist. This isn't an opinion, but adjudicated fact, proved by a New York court that found Trump liable for nearly half a billion dollars for his decades of business fraud. Or another court, which accepted Trump's settlement of $25 million for years of defrauding customers of his fake "Trump University." Or the jury in Trump's criminal case, which convicted him on 34 felony charges for defrauding voters by paying hush money to an adult film actress.

What can still be hard to wrap one's mind around, however, is how a man so shamelessly criminal, who openly treats his supporters like wallets to be picked, is the GOP nominee for the third presidential election in a row. But perhaps it's not so surprising, argues Joe Conason. In his new book, "The Longest Con: How Grifters, Swindlers, and Frauds Hijacked American Conservatism," the journalist and editor-in-chief at The National Memo traces the long marriage between right-wing politics and con artistry. Trump is no anomaly in this history, but the natural result of decades of snake oil salesmen bamboozling the Republican base for political gain and profit.
Conason spoke with Salon about why this history matters for the 2024 election.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

We have the Supreme Court's immunity decision. Donald Trump keeps making violent threats and promising retribution. With Project 2025, he's going full fascist. In the pantheon of terrible things about him, one of the least alarming things to most people is that he's a criminal and a fraud. The fraud case he lost fell off most people's radars because everything else about him feels so scary. So why should people care about the fraud angle?

Economic performance is stronger when Democrats hold the White House

By Josh Bivens • April 2, 2024

https://www.epi.org/publication/econ-performance-pres-admin/

Summary: The economy performs much better during Democratic presidential administrations than during Republican ones.

Key findings

• Since 1949, there has been a Democratic advantage in the average performance of key macroeconomic indicators measuring economic health, including:

• Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth
• Job growth
• Unemployment rate
• Growth in inflation-adjusted wages
• Growth of market-based incomes per capita
• Inflation
• Interest rates

• This Democratic advantage is across the board in all variables we measure but strongest in private-sector outcomes—notably, business investment, job growth, and the growth of market-based incomes.

• Household income growth (adjusted for inflation) was faster on average and far more equal during Democratic administrations, and the Democratic advantage shows up for every group.

Why this matters

We suspect that the simple facts on economic performance during Democratic and Republican administrations aren’t well known. Providing accurate economic information at a time of rampant misinformation supports an informed citizenry.

We now have all the important economic indicators for the second quarter of 2024:

• Real GDP grew 2.8%

• The unemployment rate was 4.0%.

• Inflation was down to 2.8%.

• Real wages were up 1%.

• Real disposable personal income was up 1.3%.

• Real consumption was up 1.5%.

J.D. Vance didn’t have sex with a couch. But he’s still extremely weird.

The rumors were easy to believe, especially when the potential VP has such terrible ideas about sex.

by Rebecca Jennings | Jul 25, 2024, 4:30 PM CDT

rumor-false

“[W]e cannot let JD Vance near the oval office,” one person tweeted with a picture of the many sofas inside the room. Another juxtaposes Vance staring longingly with zoom-ins of leather couches while Barry White’s “Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up” plays. When the rumor had spread widely enough for the Associated Press to publish a lengthy explainer headlined “No, JD Vance did not have sex with a couch,” someone else quoted it and referenced the infamous Bill Clinton denial, writing, “I did not have sectional relations.”

Curiously, the AP article debunking the rumor has been removed from its website — an unusual decision typically reserved for serious factual or editorial errors. As a spokesperson for the AP told Vox via email, “The story, which did not go out on the wire to our customers, didn’t go through our standard editing process. We are looking into how that happened.” Some still speculated that perhaps the AP’s commitment to fact-checking is such that, despite the fact that Vance didn’t write about it in Hillbilly Elegy, there’s no definitive proof he didn’t try to have sex with a couch.

JD Vance’s ‘Cat Ladies’ Riff Has Serious ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Vibes

You may have heard about JD Vance’s “childless cat ladies” riff. But even if you have, it’s worth revisiting the full quote — and reminding yourself of what it says about the movement that may wind up in charge of this country after this year’s election.

In 2021, while running for the Senate, Vance explained what he saw as one of the biggest problems facing America: It’s being run “by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.” He name-checked, among others, Vice President Kamala Harris.

It’s a statement, as my colleague Jessica Grose writes, that shows the desperation of Republicans who are still “clinging to the tag line that the G.O.P. is the pro-family party.” But even for a red-meat, red-state Senate candidate, this was a remarkably harsh — and conspiracy-minded — insult to a large number of people: Around one in six American women 40 to 44 have never had children. It’s the kind of comment that makes you wonder if Vance thinks that he has been nominated by the Republican Party to serve as the vice president of the Republic of Gilead.

Sorry — yes — Vance knows that our nation is still called the United States of America. But there’s a real “Handmaid’s Tale” vibe to a lot of what we’re hearing from the right.

As Vance’s statement illustrates, many people who call themselves conservatives — and who, routinely, as Donald Trump did on Wednesday, accuse moderately center-left Democrats like Harris of being “radical” — are actually the real radicals. That is, they seemingly can’t stand America as it is and want to transform it back into a kind of society we haven’t been for generations. This is especially true when it comes to gender roles.

Modern America is by no means free of sexism. It is, however, a society that offers women far more freedom to choose their paths in life than societies of the past. And it has been that kind of society for a long time.

"License to steal": Donald Trump's history of fraud emerges as a new threat with SCOTUS decision
Journalist Joe Conason warns about Republican grifting in his new book "The Longest Con"

If you’re wondering how it came about that one of the two major political parties in the United States of America — the once Grand Old Party, the party of Lincoln — now stands ready to nominate as its presidential candidate a soulless, conscienceless, quadruply-indicted, twice-impeached pathologically lying conman (not to mention an adjudicated rapist) who tried to overthrow American democracy once, has proposed terminating the Constitution, and today openly promises that, if elected, he’d use the powers of the presidency to jail his opponents and to quash a free press, then this book is for you.
