Back to that Barre CHORD thing

the BEST Barre Chord Exercise

at the start I think I was doing it wrong and using the Middle finger but maybe this was from using bottle neck or using a metal or glass slide after down tuning or using open G

I haven't played Chrono Trigger in ages, but I heard this song in somebody's video earlier today.

There's so many cool versions of this song on YouTube done by artists with all sorts of instruments.

I can't believe I'm not able to find a live orchestra performance of this song specifically, but they have medleys of the whole OST out there.

This was the closest to the real thing I could find.

The whole soundtrack for that game was a jam. Yasunori Mitsuda is a genius.

It's so cool to see that people as recent as only 2 months ago are still covering songs from a game I first played when I was only a sophomore in high school.

Some video game stuff is great

Yeah if I had a you-tuber account and seen people bash music from a game maybe...or I would maybe post a Salty Flame post, probably get into an argument with guys like 'Rick Beato' he is trained and seems like an expert on most things but he is DEAD WRONG on the video game stuff
the last vids I watched of his it was a regular thing for him to bash game music.

I would even argue that by the late 1980s video games were becoming a form of musical art, however the technology was not there to make the tones sound like pleasant musical waves of melody it always sounded unpleasant until the tech began to catch up.
Video game stuff was simple but it was growing, all that synth artificial stuff and computer stuff is almost the same world. It was about pushing the envelop, experimentation and test and engineering, the German and US innovators on sound and the Japanese companies Yamaha, Korg and Kawai who would embrace the stuff and ideas like 'Midi' growing, representatives of Roland and Sequential Circuits arriving, the dawn of the personal computer era. The family of Home Computer the Operating system and new
CPU, a line of personal computers from Atari Corporation, people sometimes kids were starting figure out new sounds for a game or a pop or rock band, the desktop Computers or cheap All-in-one 'Computers' changed to become music stations mixing digital and old school mixing console analogue with PA speaker address and sound recording and reproduction. The artificial piano keyboards improve as computers and video games improve, the keyboard began arriving cheaper with good enough piano for beginners or even intermediate pianists.
for a while it was bad but then maybe 90s I don't exactly know when but its merit as an 'Artform' began to pass out many animated toons, stories in film and cinema movies, and even its sound or musical score was 'better'

There is a skill in writing a simple child like catchy melody that hooks a person into a trance and rhythm of the game without being too annoying
Some guys would hire real instrument players, real composers, real bands, 'Monkey Island' the 'Grim Fandango' the simple Tetris jingle, the Chrono Trigger and the Marios, they explore all kinds of modes and odd times...
...the songs also set 'Mood' like a film soundtrack, 'Donkey Kong' was fun other video games had sounds that felt like you were exploring space, or in a Western or maybe horror spooky
it became very 'complex' ...like movie composers, maybe even more!
what they were doing but catchy and as the same rate and graphics and sounds improved on the console and computers the tunes became more tolerable, these days a lot of people have trouble telling the difference between a real instrument and a digi sampled instrument that's how good the basslines and beats and melody got...they didn't all 'invent' this from nowhere, they follow rules that have been around in Pop and Blues, old rhythms that were forms of dance, the film composer tricks and follow ideas from 'Classical' music harmony
.

As downloads and online tunes were available in recent years people buy game music... the sound of a game is purchased, they became 'Popular Songs' some fans would even go to Orchestra performances of the musical tunes and they would know every song in the video game.
some of the Japanese video game Composers took it to other levels, the Japan guys known as great song writers, some of the best Video Game Music Composers

I don't really play games anymore but I can see why its an Artform as much Hollywood is Art or Pop music is Art and the game can be respected in many areas.
The game world maybe should be respected even more.

its strange how old and bad is becoming hip again and now how people have gone back to old Casio type plug ins to get that Retro sound a band is look for

I've tried to keep an open mind on all this music stuff but I have more or less concluded a lot of Western music history is simple emotional buzz, simple drug linked drugs induced feeling, simple love songs, while trying to be part of a crowd or latest 'drugs'... a lot of those events, festivals, gigs the hipster rock thing, the rapper show, the electronic DJ stuff, a lot of it isn't music its wanting to be part of a group or tribe. In music very few people criticize or hear musically, they might hear a beat or a nice chord or nice lyrics about 'Missing Love' or 'Loving you Baby' but that's about the sum of it or few think for themselves, a lot of it is drug induced the Booze, the Weed, Rap its a mix of stuff and Rappers Who Overdosed on a 'Cocktail' of drugs. Moving away from Booze to the Hard stuff the spirits, a stronger vodka or whiskey and felling sorry for themselves, she drinks and sings because her mean cheated or the guys angry but crying into whiskey because they lost their country girl so now a depressing country song. Marijuana well known astories of Bob Marley his Drug Use and Reggae Music. Funk and some Latin people there was Cocaine and coffee beat appearing in Western music. It was drugs in the hippe flower power era LSD made the Psychedelia Space Rock scene people listened to a new sound from the Yardbirds to Hendrix to Pink Floyd to Zappa to Beatles, Beer and Mushrooms, other types of indie or "stoner rock" or Desert Rock were born from California to Australia, in the electronic or Rave scene its Stims, MDMA, or Ecstasy in the Euro scene. Keith Richards and others did prescription drugs Quaaludes some survived to write stories and do songs, Little Richard a gay guy preacher religion links he struggled with drug use and 'pep' pills, others in the scene had their minds destroyed, grunge alternative rock, hard rock, self inflicted death by gunshot, Suicide by hanging.

Western music is a study of drugs while playing silly notes?

and the Chicago jazz scene, free improvisation, NYC jazz scene, lots and lots of drugs.

However I will admit Jazz produced some weird unique odd people

Geometry and Waves

Math and Synth, with the invention of Radio and advances in Math and Electronics we have been able to break down and analysis of music even down to fractions of notes, examination on greater levels than Ancient Greek philosophers did

Although our Math isn't always Mathematical looking at modern music it can still go into the Mystic, Cosmic, Metaphysical level as we struggle to find explanations as to what we see and humans experience.

,

The rational analysis has been around a while, the age of Classical music you had people with perfect pitch listening to exotic scales from the East and adding them to Western music pieces, you had experiments in microtones the hidden invisible notes between notes, mathematicians like Huygens who preferred meantone temperament; he innovated in 31 equal temperament which was not itself a new idea, the rational break down of music and machine-like examination is not a new thing.

That's the "Real Deal" on the Donald Duck cartoon.

I grew up on that one.

My old man would rent tapes from the library when we were kids and he'd set up 2 VCRs so he could record anything that we liked to watch again. I won't say I've seen it a million times or anything, but I'm sure I watched it at least a dozen in my lifetime.

Pretty sure they could have easily cut that up into bits even when they were airing it on the Disney Channel even back when I was a kid. That's a pretty damn long cartoon compared to a good deal of their other stuff, so maybe the version you remember seeing was some sort of officially abridged version that was "advertiser friendly" and fit in a time slot.

It's a shame that Disney lost their way at some point.

Donald Duck, specifically, was a great teacher of mine and had a lot of influence on me.

I'm pretty sure this one had the exact opposite of the intended impact on me, but I watched it quite a few times with my brothers...

This, which I've posted on these boards before, is probably tied for the most impactful cartoon segment I'd ever seen during my formative years...

That's a jam right there buddy.

It's funny that I've never really listened to anything else they've done because that song Bittersweet Symphony is one of my Top 10 of all time for sure, and I know all about the back story about how the Stones screwed them over. Done as dirty as George Harrison was.

For a long time and maybe to this day when they play live they thank Mick Jagger for that before they start this song.

Song might not be for everybody, and a spot in my top ten might seem a little high, but there isn't a lot of songs I've heard that I don't know the lyrics to and I place a lot of importance on 'em. The words to this one always spoke to me on some primal level from the first time I heard it until now.

ETA: Was listening to that one for a while. Never heard it and I like the flourishes. I'm going to have to put that on my bookmarks.

Here's another song from right around that same time that I've also had in my Top 10, by another 1-hit Wonder who also used a lot of synth and samples from previous artists in the song.

Dude.... Thank you for bringing this up.

Something has been EATING at me for weeks now ever since Robbie Williams first came up in the cinema thread.

There was a synth song from the late 90's that I'd loved ever since I heard it playing on some sort of screensaver demo running on a computer at Best Buy when me and a buddy were looking at the computers they had there. We had to be 16 and fresh with drivers licenses at the time. I got lucky a few years later and found out what the song was called and got it through Napster. But that collection of music I had back then was lost on a fragged hard drive somewhere along the way and I never bothered replacing most of it.

But then I'd heard the name Robbie Williams for the first time in more than a decade and for some reason I had replaced his name as the creator of this synth song in the music database inside my head. Because of that, forgetting the name of the song and the complete absence of lyrics and the song it was just... lost.

Well.... it was until right now when I was looking at the side bar for "Phonebooth". It was right there staring me in the face...

Not Robbie Williams.

Robert Miles.

And the song is called Children.

Such a cool jam, and a lot of memories attached to it.

Headphones recommended.

that type of music would drive me nutty, I used to live with some of those stoner, drinker, techno Amsterdam crowd... Yeah... I kind of miss that era of music and/or my life. It's not a big surprise why it didn't catch on for super long in the US while it's still going strong to this day elsewhere in the world, but I'm surprised it kind of seemed to just die overnight considering how big it had gotten around the late 90's and early 2000's. Maybe 9/11 had something to do with the shift in tone?

For some reason when you said 8-bit along with all of this, it made me think of a music video I'd seen only one time late at night on either MTV or VH1 and thought it was pretty freakin' cool. I'd told my brother about it a few times over the years, but never knew what it was until I finally found it on Youtube and showed it to him, without having watched it again myself.

Kind of wished I'd watched it again myself first. It was kind of an uncomfortable watch around 12 years after the first and only time I'd seen it.

Not sure if I didn't pick up the strange vibes it puts off the first time around back in the late 90's or very early 2000's because I was high and/or drunk while I watched it back then, or if that was just a more innocent time and I didn't infer and attribute any weird vibes onto it.

I dunno man. Everybody just accepted that Marty McFly, a high school kid, hung out with the crackpot inventor who wasn't related to him. Pretty certain that when they make that terrible Back to the Future remake that they're going to explain away that relationship with at least a loose family tie. (No pun intended).

What do you think?

ETA: Lol... I just did it again. Boy. I can't even imagine how this got put on MTV or VH1 at all, even late at night back then. I'd have expected it to have gone virtually unnoticed on MTV in the last 10 years even if it was played every day in the middle of the afternoon, but I think parents would have been lined up with pitchforks if they saw it back then.

Don't watch it, unless you're looking to be creeped out.

my guess is that is something from Asia the East that will make the cut, maybe Stringed, Chinese Chime Bells, Tsuzumi or Vietnamese drum or more probably Asian 'Strings'

Alicia Keys

I see Japanese and Chinese kids play hundreds of times better than her

terrible musician, I'm actually amazed how stupid the public can be thinking she actually plays piano

at the age of four the bullshit gossip magazines they say Keys was a 'genius' appeared on The Cosby Show as Maria, one of Rudy's slumber-party friends
William Henry Cosby Jr has since been exposed as a sex fiend, many 'Sexual Assault' cases

they say she's a street kid trained, maybe a regular child trained in Classical and some world folk music and American blues piano vamp should easily out player her

probably sold her ass on the Weinstein casting couch

they say she is 'Classically Trained' but that 'Level' I never heard it in never music

she married a tone-deaf Rapper so I would question how she hears tone and harmony, or maybe she just married for money or animalistic copulation

“DEI is not a threat. It’s a gift.”
https://x.com/PopBase/status/1886270064976118220#m
— Alicia Keys accepting the Global Impact Award at the GRAMMYs

She had absolutely no impact on me, I only remember being somewhat annoyed by her 'music'

I remember hearing some of it having some kind of harmony or being in tune maybe her doing a vocal with a drum bass loop backing track, there was maybe something about Falling or Girlfriends or Africa a Peter Gabrielle Song originally with Kate Bush but now 'Bono'? "Don't Give Up" maybe?
it sounded typical "Plastic Pop" Love Song Drinking Smoking Song Boyfriend Girlfriend genre of R and B the so called "Popular Music" that lacks any real depth or merit...she moaned something about New York with a backing track but I do not believe I have ever listened to that song in full, or any of her songs in full, the sound just annoys me and I change the radio station although for a while it was always on the radio.
It's not her music, its all Pop in general that annoys me.

I think she's also a tv or movie 'actress' or something?

Would not be shocked to later discover she rents her ass like 'The Pussycat Dolls' although at least Alicia Keys has tried to sing and tried to learn piano

this style of 'pop' would not be my music at all

but anyways she wants to push DEI

Chinese and Japanese children playing covers live do a far better job than her

Piano or good piano has a place in pop and rock

Acoustic pianos play differently, they are primarily made of wood...not like your digital keyboard sound at all but I like Billy Joel and so what if its pop rock cliché because not all piano in Pop is terrible and some Rick Wakeman doing Bowie, The Beatles had nice harmony Jazz went new and fusion guys like Chick Corea on the scene, Chris Illingworth from Go Go Penguin proves British music is not dead? Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple do have some challenging live stuff especially if you try copy it by ear, for those who like to play slow and expression. Slow expressive players who can't keep up, it can be hard to match the energy of Little Richard of pervert Jerry Lee Lewis, Jukebox The Ghost, Ben Folds Five, Toby Smith of Jamiroquai they can be a bit repetitive but rockin pop energy. 'Prince' would be there and he seemed to do a bit of everything on every instrument, Mike Oldfield another experimental multi instrument guy was a very skilled prog rock musician, Jethro Tull had interesting keyboardists over the years. The more sophisticated jazzy Esbjörn Svensson for modern sound but Nat King Cole had that swinging blues charleston era sound old school, Duke Ellington a top player band leader, Rick Wright's weird piano jams with Kenny Kirkland modern pop jazz but you can't deny the greatest of European Classical Composers, Marc Cohn for a mix of modern with a flavor of old gospel.

Born and raised on videogames, my brothers and I. If you put something video game where it normally wasn't found, I was there for it. Even in my late teens or early 20's when I would have caught that video the first time while I was channel surfing. It might not even have been MTV or VH1 that showed it. I never watched anything on either of those channels regularly... not even Jackass. I was never a huge music video watcher growing up and by that time MTV had already practically stopped showing them, and most of the crap they did show was even worse.

This is pretty interesting to me now though...

Why didn't anything in that video bother me in the slightest when I saw it back around 2000, but when I saw it a decade later with my brother I was cringing about halfway through?

And then just yesterday when I was talking about it I thought "I probably overreacted then and posted it again before watching it, and around 3/4 of the way in I was cringing so hard I didn't even finish it.

But then you say it's not so bad, and now I'm really wondering why it makes me cringe so hard today when I had good memories of the single time I saw it for so long.

It's strange how the brain works alongside of Time.

In any event, it's a fun song. Back from a time where I felt the music in general was just a lot more happy.

9/11 really fucked up the vibe forever.

"In The Flesh" Rally scene from Pink Floyd: The Wall

Pink Floyd The Wall is a 1982 British musical drama film directed by Alan Parker, based on Pink Floyd's 1979 album The Wall. The screenplay was written by Pink Floyd vocalist and bassist Roger Waters. The Boomtown Rats vocalist Bob Geldof made his film debut as rock star Pink, who, driven to neurosis by the pressures of stardom and traumatic events in his life, constructs an emotional and mental wall to protect himself. However, this coping mechanism eventually backfires, and Pink demands to be set free.

Bossa nova and samba are out. 'Funk' is in

I don't hear that heavy downbeat with off beat, "jamming" on the bass the slap and popping note, I don't the seventh note or sus chord or sharp 9 or Mixolydian mode
I do not hear the Clyde Stubblefield snare or swung Kick drum of Zep
or other rhythm legends that others would later sample as 'Funky' it seems after James Brown and Prince the Funk is basically dead, I'm not sure what the tronica stuff is the electric keyboard samples and 'Jazzed' Funk seems its own thing, mostly FuckedInTheHead.
in the Brazil style I don't hear notes of funk I do not hear the voice drive nor do I hear that James Brown, Prince percussive groove in the voice but maybe its 'danceable' or makes people sway at the nighclub disco which they associate with funk.

or maybe its the Lyric content, but James Brown didnt say much just mostly grunted and made 'sound' they also had techniques like "choking" the guitar neck percussive hits like rock or scatting vocal improvisation with wordless vocables, nonsense syllables or without words at all, something that happened in Blues, Jazz and other World Music...the traditional Funk that once was now seems dead
