Lionsgate’s Losing Streak: What’s Behind the Studio’s Seven Consecutive Box Office Flops
https://variety.com/2024/film/news/lionsgate-box-office-flops-borderla
nds-megalopolis-1236187749/
Lionsgate’s genre-spanning 2024 slate of heist comedies, weepy coming-of-age tales, cheeky video game adaptations and horror stories was aiming to fill a void. Most of these were the kinds of movies that major Hollywood studios have either stopped making entirely or largely relegated to streaming services.
And yet, instead of packing seats at multiplexes due to pent-up demand, everything from director Eli Roth’s irreverent console-to-screen adventure “Borderlands” ($32 million globally), the “Crow” reboot ($23.7 million) and historical crime drama “1992” ($2.9 million) to Halle Berry’s post-apocalyptic horror story “Never Let Go” ($16.2 million), Dave Bautista-led action-comedy “The Killer’s Game” ($5.9 million), Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi epic “Megalopolis” ($11.2 million) and “Wonder” prequel “White Bird” ($6.8 million) has sputtered at the box office. That’s a string of seven consecutive flops — each with paltry single-digit debuts — in the nine weeks between early August and mid-October.
“It was a pretty diverse slate and certainly wasn’t cannibalization of films,” says Matthew Harrigan, a senior analyst at Benchmark Co. “It was more that nothing really worked.”
Lionsgate tends to keep budgets in check and sells foreign rights to its theatrical titles, which helps recoup losses for underperforming movies. In the case of “Megalopolis,” Coppola fronted the $120 million production costs and other fees. So, as a distributor for hire, the studio will actually make money despite the film’s poor box office showing. The $100 million-budgeted “Borderlands,” a rare big-budget tentpole for Lionsgate, is expected to result in a $30 million write-down. Yet for the most part, none of the studio’s misses is damaging enough to force heads in the C-suite to roll.
“Lionsgate does a good job at mitigating risk on their releases. Nonetheless, you can’t hedge that bad of a run,” Harrigan says. “The cumulative loss from mid-budget films can be as bad as a tentpole.”
The downturn is striking when compared with the studio’s streak last year of “John Wick: Chapter 4” ($440 million worldwide), “Saw X” ($111 million) and “The Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” ($348 million). Those films, as well as most of 2024’s lineup, were greenlit by then-motion picture group chair Joe Drake, who was replaced by Adam Fogelson in January.
Industry experts commend Lionsgate for catering to underserved demographics, such as faith-based crowds and Black audiences. Low-budget Christian drama “Unsung Hero” powered to $21 million in August, while horror satire “The Blackening” amassed $18 million in 2022 and justified a sequel.
“Part of their strategy is filling the gaps. Strategically it’s a smart thing to do,” says Jason Squire, professor emeritus of USC School of Cinematic Arts. “But this is the ancient struggle of the movie business: You just don’t know if audiences will show up.”
Wall Street has been skeptical of Lionsgate’s ability to compete in a media business dominated by tech giants and studios that exist within sprawling conglomerates. Shares are trading at $7.84, falling more than 30% from the prior year. Lionsgate Studios is spinning off from the premium cable network Starz, to cleanly separate the two businesses and pave the way for potential M&A deals.
Upcoming releases like King of Pop biopic “Michael,” Ana de Armas-led “John Wick” spinoff “Ballerina,” another “Hunger Games” prequel and “Now You See Me 3” could spark a rebound in fortunes in 2025 and beyond. And Lionsgate is turning to its vast library to expand the life of movies beyond the screen, with planned stage adaptations of “La La Land,” “Dirty Dancing” and “The Hunger Games.”
Lionsgate is far from the only studio that’s endured challenges in 2024 — just ask Warner Bros., Universal or

Back in the 1950's at their peak, there were over 4000 drive-in theaters operating in the United States. Currently, there are about 330 Drive-in Movie Theaters still operating in the United States. There are many more that are permanently closed but still remain standing and could potentially be re-opened at some point in the future. In fact, there have been several drive-in theaters that have been re-opened the past couple of years after sitting dark for 20 and even 30 years. We list all open drive-in theaters in the United States and have also listed those that have closed in the past 20 years. To search for drive-ins in a specific state, click on the state above and all the drive-in theaters in that state will be listed. “You get to a point where you’re living in your beautiful house in the hills, you’re meeting only other wealthy people and you’re not connecting to the audience,” adds Galloway. “And the moviegoing audience is primarily young, so at a certain point you become really detached from them.”
Which explains why so much of what Hollywood is producing these days feels so familiar. For instance, there are currently remakes or sequels in development for ’80s classics like An Officer and a Gentleman, Ghost and Dirty Dancing — projects that have little or no emotional resonance to anyone under 50. Obviously, remakes have long been a studio staple. But a War of the Roses redo? A new Running Man offering? It’s unclear whether these nostalgia plays will be all that appealing even to people over 50.

Personally, Hollywood has always made crap, but the big difference today is that you don't have to pay $20 for popcorn, drinks and a ticket when the same crap is available on your home TV for free.

So, how did Hollywood die?
This shouldn’t have happened. But the fear, the love-of-money-above-all-else, and the abandonment of that singular goal of making outstanding art, no matter the emotional or financial cost, caused the whole magic web of scaffolding to fall.
When you have something this special, you should know better. You should know to protect it, to support the structures that make it possible for it to breathe and exhale beautiful pieces of filmed movement that change people’s lives.
stine-bateman-heres-what-comes-next
These are pretty words to describe Hollywood's death: "the abandonment of that singular goal of making outstanding art, no matter the emotional or financial cost, caused the whole magic web of scaffolding to fall." The truth isn't pretty: "Why in hell pay to see a movie in the theater when you can see it for free at home?"

So many great directors of the past seem to no longer have it for whatever reason
Robert Zemeckis you expect comedy, action, maybe a fun active kids animation with CGI but 'Here' is something else...
it seems to be the wrong type of film, Robert Zemeckis is expected to bring fun comedy or action fast paced moving scenes or maybe both, but now it sounds like something for an arty modern art theatre show or arthouse yoko ono show...he does or did experiment, he is know for early use of computer graphics when Hollywood tried to ban it and ban movies like 'Tron' from getting Awards so there is that visual pushing the envelope CGI element to his work people might look for.
Robert Zemeckis is he done, over? he started with comedy 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' maybe even a culture comment on "Beatlemania" for the group's fanatics, then a War Comedy '1941' the plot is loosely based on what has come to be known as the Great Battle of Los Angeles or Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942 with a little War of the World paranoia, race conflict Zoot Suit Riots brawl at a jazz dance bar joint internment camps and wacky Hollywood comedy, another hit Romancing the Stone following a romance novelist a femake writer who must leave NYC to Colombia's South American jungle in order to save and rescue a damsel from criminals.
Hollywood is afraid of itself and won't experiment much on a 'risky' idea? other critics will say it does not entertain and the movie wasn’t good
a self fulfilling prophecy with people telling him it wasn’t marketable and wouldn’t make money also people want certain style of escapism, story and entertainment and are not going to spend their time and money on just any movie now
Here 2024 American drama film its like trying to watch 3 snapchat tikkytok clips on 3 different phones at the same time or watch 3 tv sets at the same time? story triple jumps a non-linear fashion, screen is often sub-divided into multiple panes, presenting events from different time periods simultaneously. They say it had difficult getting backers, Hollywood would not support or advertise and the movie was largely financed by foreign sales
Robert Zemeckis was a big film maker for a while Back to the Future trilogy, The Polar Express and the live-action/animated comedy Who Framed Roger Rabbit ...but...

mulative/released-in-2024
Up until about a month or two ago I thought for sure Joker 2 was going to make half a billion even if it was terrible and knock the 3 Chinese movies down to 8th, 9th, and 10th place at least.
Unfortunately, Beetlejuice x2 fell just shy of what it needed to make to displace any of them. It still needs $18 Million to take 9th place from Pegasus 2, and unless Bruce finds a whole lot of money in the international cushions, that's probably not going to happen.
So what else does Hollywood have?
https://www.the-numbers.com/movies/release-schedule
You see any movies in there you think can break half a billion?
Gladiator 2?
Wicked?
Moana 2?
Kraven the Hunter?
Mufasa: The Lion King?
Sonic the Hedgehog 3?
Nosferatu?
Whatever the hell "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" is?
The only one I'd say for sure should do it is Moana 2. Other than that, I'll give it to Mufasa as well. Disney has only put out two movies this year and they both made well over a Billion. I think people liked Moana. I know people loved The Lion King, and I count myself among them. If they stripped the woke shit out of these two cartoons, I could see them easily crossing half a billion and making quite a bit more on top of that.
I don't think Sonic 3 would do it. I dunno. Maybe pre-covid it would have.
Wicked and/or Gladiator 2 might, but I know they're both woke trash that I'm never going to watch.
Very unlikely that a movie named Nosferatu would ever crack half a billion.
I'm guessing the numbers for Kraven the Hunter makes Sony decide to end the non-Spider-Man Spider-Man movie experiment once and for all. At least we should all get a good laugh out of that one.
With that short list of "blockbusters" still yet to come out, there's pretty much no way out of having at least 2 Chinese movies on that list at the end of the year.
That's really not the end of the world though. I was under the mistaken impression until some time earlier this year that the Chinese never had a Top 10 movie on the list at the end of the year until now. But when I was doing research on something unrelated I discovered that seeing a Chinese movie on that list over the last 10 or 12 years at least isn't super out of the ordinary.
I don't think it should be happening for any reason, but I if Hollywood starts making better financial decisions going forward I think it could easily take back the Top 10 for many years to come. That should happen because all the free money and venture capital dried up. We've seen the shift taking place. I'm hopeful for the future.

The comic book convinced Hollywood to make this movie. What is in the comic?
There is no plot and no story to “Here” the comic book. The comic book sets up a camera at one location, pointing in one direction, and records everything that happens over 3 billion years. The comic book, and probably the movie, is the highlights, presented in no particular order, jumping back and forth across time. There are dinosaurs. There are meteors killing the dinosaurs. There is the American Revolution, at least what can be seen from where the house was built, but before it was built. There are dull house parties. Thank God these people are dead, but there are scenes from thousands of years in the future when the house is part of a museum exhibit. If the movie is at all similar to the comic book, it is a dull museum exhibit. A snooze-fest. Hollywood should never make another such movie.
You know what the best thing about comics compared to movies? You can move through the pages as fast as you want. You are not locked into the speed that the director, Robert Zemeckis, thinks is appropriate for his 3 billion year long epic. I stopped going to theaters because there is no fast forward button to fast pass through the dull parts. Who wants to spend 90 seconds watching the logos of production companies at the beginning of a movie? Or the credits at the end? You can leave before the credits complete or you can just avoid the whole experience by watching a copy at home where you do have a fast forward button.

“For the past two years, we’ve been driving changes within our motion picture studio to improve green light governance and franchise management, which remain focal points going forward. This is a business where translating operational changes into results takes time, but I believe we’ll see those strategic shifts deliver improved outcomes in the coming years,” Zaslav said.
Hindsight is 20/20 but Zaslav realized that foresight can detect movie ideas/themes that will never be successful and should not be green lighted. A Joker musical sung off-key? Joker dies before meeting Batman? That is certain to fail.

Oh... That's a LOTR cartoon, huh? Yeah. That wont' make much.
You might be on to something there, but I'm still firm on Kraven until proven otherwise. I haven't been a comic book guy for decades, but I don't even have any clue who Kraven is. I'd guess that 95% of the people in America don't know who the hell Kraven is.
People are just burnt out on comic book movies anyhow, and none of these no-name characters have done well at all, particularly for Sony. Madame Web was a hilarious flop that even Sony didn't feel was worth doing reshoots, so they just did a ton of bad dubbing and people saying stuff when their mouths are moving. Fuck Sony for that. Everyone knows that the studios only care about the bottom line at the end of the day, but they didn't even try on that one.
Morbious was at least a character I knew. That didn't go well. Wasn't there another non-Spider-Man Spider-Man movie in between the two of them too?
I give this somewhere around Shazam II and Blue Beetle numbers from last year. Maybe in the area of $120 to $150 Million worldwide.

Joker 2 Co-Star Unloads On Joaquin Phoenix Sequel, And Has A Good Theory On Why It Flopped
https://www.cinemablend.com/movies/joker-2-star-tim-dillon-unloads-on-
joaquin-phoenix-sequel-lady-gaga-todd-phillips-dc
"It’s the worst film that has ever been made. It’s actually not ‘so bad.’ It’s the worst film ever made. I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism!’ All these think pieces. And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing, to a point where it’s insane."
"It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one of them, and we’d hear this crap, and I’d go, ‘What the fuck is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever…’ We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’"
Joker 2 kept audiences guessing about its true intent until the very last shot. And as I wrote, I disliked what the finale said about Arthur Fleck’s journey, mainly because I thought that it negated the impact of the first movie. Why would anyone go back and rewatch two movies about a guy who doesn’t eventually become the Joker? It’s almost like Todd Phillips was playing a joke on his audience. Which is why Tim Dillon ultimately surmisses:
"It’s not even hate watchable. That’s how terrible it is."
(Hollywood knew from the script what they were financing [Joker dies before meeting Batman] but still greenlighted it. And as it was being made, Hollywood could see what was made, but didn't pull the plug early. And once finished, Hollywood could have called it a loss, and shelved it, but released it to theaters, instead)

Yeah... I just found out [SPOILER ALERT] that he just dies pathetically at the end after basically being beat up by everybody else in the movie, whether physically and/or emotionally and/or mentally.
Maybe one day I'll watch it for a laugh. As a troll, it's pretty funny, considering how much money people lost on it. Phoenix and Phillips banked $20 Million. GaGa got her $12 Million. A terrible movie was made and some rich people lost some money. And an IP that might have been successful is now dead too.
I think Phillips knows that he'll never be trusted again, but I'm pretty sure he was well aware of that going into this.

Is she a pornographic actress, maybe not but she is a movie tv star and a Pinup softcore girl, Pamela Anderson a Playboy Bunny Playmate, movie The Last Showgirl is a 2024 American drama film directed by Gia Coppola and written by Kate Gersten. It stars Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka, Billie Lourd and Jason Schwartzman. Controversy has surrounded her with Rockers, Tommy Lee, Kid Rock and STI STD rumors AIDs, she was born in Ladysmith, British Columbia, Canada, she has issues and told stories of abuse, Anderson decided to have breast implant surgery, increasing her bust size to 34D, she is a self made 'star' one of her starts in film tv was role as Lisa, the original "Tool Time Girl", on the ABC comedy series Home Improvement, her big breakthrough role was as C.J. Parker on Baywatch, which she played for five seasons, she has appeared in many reality tv shows like Big Brother, Dancing with the Stars, Dancing on Ice etc outside of her pip-up girl look she had to struggle to be taken seriously.
it has potential as a film from the trailer, it seems to have Blonde 2022 film vibes or The Fighter, The Cutting Edge Going for the Gold, Flashdance, Myra Breckinridge, Fatal Instinct, Strictly Ballroom 1992, Roseland, Eyes Wide Shut, Saturday Night Fever, Black Swan, Wild Things, The Wrestler 2008 film
Pamela Anderson was a sexy icon Bunny before youtubes and the internets and the Snapchats and Facebooks and OnlyFans Pronopgraphy Camgirl and Instagrams of people half naked advertising themselves online

it could be an interesting subject, somewhat like the 1920s the 'Burlesque' entertainment era
but I don't see it doing huge at box office, the topic is 'strange' maybe adult-ish
Arguably 2014's Whiplash, is a movie of similar style...however they are not 'dance' films and a male role or Mickey Rourke as a Wrestler is a different subject matter

At $210, I don't imagine this one comes very close to breaking even. I think it will go somewhere along the lines of the flops we had in the first 1/3rd of the year before the summer blockbusters came out and made cash. The movie did carry over one good thing from the first Gladiator: the sad music sung in a language I don't recognize played at the very end, when Russell Crowe is having a death dream of being reunited with his murdered wife and son and he walks across his fields of grain in the Pagan version of an after life.
The song “Now We Are Free” by Hans Zimmer from the 2000 film Gladiator is sung in an invented language called idioglossia created by Lisa Gerrard. Lisa Gerrard doesn't sing in English, but uses "the language of the Heart". “I sing in the language of the Heart,” begins Gerrard. “It's an INVENTED LANGUAGE that I've had for a very long time.

Thanks for the review Lisa Gerrard is a great sound artist, they should have paid her to write more music rather than putting raps or electronic noises in as part of Trailer of the new score or sound track. I'm not sure I will watch this movie.
I think the trailer with Rappers sound may have damaged its chances for profits
checking the new soundtrack it seems fine but missing some of that simple melodic harmonic magic in the original, I have no idea why they thought adding Rappers would make it sell better. The Rap thing seems to have been removed from the sound track.
For some reason Hans Zimmer, who had composed the score to the 2000 film Gladiator, chose not to score its sequel. When the trailer came out nobody liked the Raps saying use of modern hip-hop to soundtrack the film set in ancient Rome was jarring
a guy called Harry Gregson Williams was involved, however even though he's been involved in Hollywood for a while and even though I do listen to movie scores I can not recall a single one of his songs. Maybe they are too busy and missing that simple catchy hook or easy listening repeating melodic line that opens and draws people in to classical music or old film music and has them singing or whistling along to a catch part of the tune, his songs are very well done but its missing something basic a short riff, melody, or phrase, that is designed to catch the listener’s attention. I was listening to his stuff and I think the only think I ever rememver is Antz an animation with a sound track, it stared Dan Aykroyd, Woody Allen, Danny Glover, J-Lo, Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone, Sylvester Stallone as voice actors.
even though Harry Gregson Williams is a skilled musician his stuff just isn't catchy it does not hook you in
Zimmer has however called him a "phenomenal composer"

from what I hear of the new sound track in quick clips it seems ok, moments of epic and Orchestra sound, a Zimmer approved guy and very skilled British composer, the Rap song in trailers that pissed off pans of the original movie was Recorded 2011 on US Billboard Hot Rap Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs it also received three nominations at the 2012 British Music Video Awards for Best Urban Video

Gladiator 2 Is a Dismal Retread—With One Bright Spot
I was not entertained.
By Dana Stevens | Nov 18, 2024 5:45 AM
Devising a logical sequel to the Oscar-winning 2000 blockbuster Gladiator was not a self-evident task, given that the hero of the original, Russell Crowe’s Maximus Decimus Meridius, does not survive the movie. Rather than go back in time and imagine an origin story for Maximus, director Ridley Scott and his longtime screenwriter David Scarpa (Napoleon, All the Money in the World) have chosen to set the story a generation after the events of the first film. That choice in and of itself was not a bad one: The prequel as an excuse for franchise extension has become such a cliché it’s generated its own genre of online joke (see: calling a particularly maddening news story or social phenomenon one’s “villain origin story”). But Gladiator 2 (or as it’s spelled in the opening title, GladIIator) sadly comes off as less a reinvention of the original than a curiously literal retread of its plot beats, characters, and themes.
Did we really need the full-on naval battle inside the Colosseum to be complete with circling sharks?
If you answered that question with a hearty “Hell, yeah!” then maybe Gladiator 2 is the holiday movie for you. But I make no guarantees that a taste for bread and circuses will get you through the dramatic longueurs of this two-and-a-half-hour saga . . .

Or an inferior piece of crap called Gladiator II. You decide.
‘Gladiator II’ is a very silly sequel, but only Denzel Washington got the memo
https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/11/18/arts/gladiator-ii-ridley-scott-
paul-mescal-denzel-washington/
Since Paramount, Scott, and good old-fashioned corporate greed kick-started the idea of continuing the “Gladiator” franchise, you would think we’d get something more than a rehash of the first film. Yet there are times when the story hews so closely to the original that the sequel plays more like a remake.
Silly is one way to describe “Gladiator II,” but only Washington got the memo. Not only is he acting on a higher plane than anyone else on the screen, he’s savoring every moment. Decked out in ostentatious robes, with rings on every finger and earrings in both ears, Washington strokes his salt-and-pepper beard and plots his Machiavellian schemes with giddy gusto.
In addition to chewing every bit of scenery possible, he throws in all his “Denzel-isms”; that is, all the unique quirks that make him our greatest working actor. We get the laugh, the stern stare, the dialogue deliveries that melt like butter sizzling in a hot skillet. He takes a line like “I own your house, I want your loyalty” and turns it into an Oscar-night clip. If this movie is a hit — and judging by its $87 million international take last weekend, it will be — I wouldn’t be surprised if Washington earned a deserved third Oscar for this role.
The script by David Scarpa, who also wrote Scott’s dreadful 2023 film “Napoleon,” has little else going for it. The emperors are just too stupid to be effective villains, and the war battle sequences are as dreary as they were in “Napoleon.” The rivalry between Marcus Acacius and Lucius is resolved in a lackluster manner, though I must give props to Scott’s homage to Kurosawa’s “Throne of Blood.”
As for the gladiator matches, they’re ridiculous enough for you to wish the movie didn’t take itself so seriously. In addition to the aforementioned baboons, there are guys riding on rhinos and there’s even a water-based battle with ships. I remember being told in college World History class that the Colosseum was indeed flooded for water battles. However, I don’t recall anything about great white sharks swimming in that water.
Between the sharks, the baboons, and a bellowing Washington yelling about how great he is, “Gladiator II” feels like Scott decided to remake “Jaws,” “The Omen,” and “Training Day” along with “Gladiator.” That sounds like a lot more fun than this movie turns out to be. Thumbs up for Denzel; send the rest of this movie to the lions.

Why Red One Absolutely Bombed At The Box Office

It's been close to 20 years since the last time a new, entirely original Christmas movie released in theaters became a big enough hit to enter anyone's annual rotation of holiday movie watching.
Over the last couple of decades, holiday films have been more the realm of made-for-TV movies and streaming originals. A notable outlier was 2018's "The Grinch," which is actually the current record holder for highest-grossing Christmas movie of all time worldwide. But it also happens to be based on one of the most iconic Christmas stories and characters in history, so it doesn't exactly qualify as a new, entirely original Christmas movie.
The last Christmas movie that was neither based on nor the sequel to an existing property and did strong numbers at the box office was "Elf" in 2003 — and even then, its global take of $229 million still would be considered a flop for a movie as costly as "Red One." The way things are going, "Red One" will be lucky to even reach that number.

Somewhat accurate-ish
Quote:
Although Geta and Caracalla did rule Rome together for a short period, after the death of their father Septimius Severus, a general who served originally under Commodus, in February 211 AD. But in reality, they were not twins: Geta was slightly younger, being born in March 189 while Caracalla was born in April 188 AD. But as the film depicts accurately, their reign was disastrous, bedevilled by poor relations between the two of them from the beginning.
half correct half wrong?
Quote:
some accuracy, at least, in the depiction of the Roman conquest of Numidia, but the timing is wholly inaccurate. Eastern Numidia, which roughly corresponds to modern-day Algeria, was conquered in 46 BC, leading to the creation of the province Africa Nova shortly afterwards. The action of Gladiator 2 is set roughly sometime between 200 and 211 AD – we’ll come back to that in a moment – which means that, even in the film’s universe, Numidia would have become a Roman outpost hundreds of years before the opening suggests.
Wrong
Quote:
Did the Romans read the daily paper over coffee?
The printing press was not invented until 1440, and the first newspaper of any kind did not exist until 1566, when weekly handwritten gazettes were distributed in Venice. Coffee and tea, meanwhile, were unknown to the Romans, although it is just, theoretically, possible that Thraex could be drinking a herbal infusion of some sort, or that he has a cup of hot spiced wine in front of him.

Why a misfire? Hollywood stretched a Broadway musical, which was watched in one sitting, into a year-long spectacle. See Wicked Part One and Two for free next year and see it in one sitting at home.
“Wicked” also has to overcome the reality that stage musicals haven’t translated to box office riches in over a decade. The last ones to really connect were 2012’s “Les Miserables” ($442 million globally) and 2014’s “Into the Woods” ($212 million globally against a $50 million budget). More recent attempts like Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake, Chu’s “In the Heights,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Cats” and “The Color Purple” all sputtered in cinemas despite being based on popular productions.
And then there are the actual songs, which may well leave you wishing that you didn't travel long distances and pay for tickets to hear this when you could have gotten the experience for free and at home:

Red One was released in cinemas last week, following Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Chris Evans teaming up to save Santa Claus from kidnappers.
On the surface, that sounds like a guaranteed festive hit with two of the biggest A-Listers around, and it climbed the domestic box office, replacing Venom: The Last Dance at the top spot.

Not exactly Rachel Ziegler levels of cancer, but it should be enough to put a musical nobody wanted to see in theaters in the red.

'Elevation'?
This could have been a good video game series today.
If this came out in the Bush or Obama years it could have made money, maybe the era of 2006-2010 DVDs and Block busters it probably would have made money. A few years back a film like this would have cash to make as long as it avoided the crash year the Crash of '08 September when mini-Bush wrecked the economy, the panic of early 2009 and sold itself during the slow growth years of Obama 'Hopium'
sound like Post Apocalypse humans vs mutant Morlocks
Morena Baccarin's big break was Firefly / Serenity then she was a tv star for a good while but tv star doesn't always mean 'Movie Star Power' but then Morena Baccarin is know for Deadpool
Anthony Mackie has a 'Star Power' brand but today the market is so bad even stars of Avengers movies have products crashing, new movies that fail at the box office, eventually a new GenZ won't even know who Falcon is anymore.
The business has changed and Hollywood is dead, nobody is sure where Generation Alpha starts but a few say people born in 2013 are now classed as 'Generation Alpha' they are kids not even teens who perhaps happened to watch what film mum or dad took them to, maybe they still watch Bambi DVD or Wizard of Oz Dvds, PAW Patrol, Lego movie, SpongeBob, a Generation Alpha of generation of people born between 2010 and 2024. If you were born in 2010 then Gen Alpha can be as old as 24, most of Generation Alpha might not watch SKorean films or shows maybe too adult some some will watch and they are certainly watching more Japan 'Anime' and its a completely different generation as none of them remember 911 or the Invasion of Iraq, everyone approaching adult age is on their phone.
Unless 'Trump' does something magic maybe The West could also decline, just like the hermit isolated people of Japan with their gizmos eventually the US might start to retreat from itself, spend less and you go to empty theaters just like Japanese Cinema Trends
to make a brand that sells? Maybe it would have been better as a game, it sounds like an number of post-apocalyptic survival-horror video games
'Gears of War' for example

Moana 2 is one of the few movies out for the rest of the year that I predicted would make at least enough to bump the Chinese movies down the top 10 list. Until I see signs otherwise, I don't think this should be hard to do at all.
I think they're in for a HUGE disappointment with Gladiator II almost for sure, and though I think Wicked will do better it won't be a huge success if it does manage to break even.
They'd better get ideas of any of these movies making $1.5 Billion out of their head. If any of them hit $1 Billion I will be amazed. Moana 2 is the only movie on the rest of the 2024 slate that has even the slightest chance of making over $1 Billion.
I wonder how many people didn't go see Red One because of Chris Evans.
I didn't even know he was in it, and this is the type of movie I would NEVER watch on my own for any reason anyhow. But I thought it was funny when my old man said that he would have taken my brother to see it this weekend to support the local 2-screen theater while he was there, but because Chris Evans came out with most of the other pathetic ex-Avengers team to tell people to vote for Kamala he's not going to ever watch a movie with any of them again.

It's been over a half a year since I really paid attention to any of this, but I believe this puts its ranking in previews somwhere around what the Bad Boyz movie got. That movie failed to make $400 Million worldwide.
Gladiator II needs $625 Million just to break even, so good luck to them.
I'm extremely disappointed in the $19.5 Million that Wicked got in previews.
That probably will be one of the last movies from Hollywood that pushes down the Chinese flicks, and with a budget of only $145 Million, it's going to smash Gladiator II.

Yeah... Bruce had an article about Glicked...
His model's prediction for Wicked alone was $143.5 Million and he said it looks like over $150 Million based on the previews.
It had $19.2 Million in previews on Thursday, and it's total after Friday is $46.5 Million. That means it only made around $27.5 Million on Friday.
Compare that to Barbie which made $22.3 Million in previews but had had $70.5 Million after Friday. That was a $48 Million Friday night.
This isn't making $150 Million. Maybe $120.
I think the Thursday night previews were fairly heavily front-loaded with big city types that love Broadway and have been dying for opening night since they saw the Super Bowl commercial for it.

Yup.
Studio Projections for Wicked came out later today and they're estimating $114 Million, including previews. With low estimates being the rule on successful movies, it will be even closer to $120 Million than that.
And despite getting a lot less than people were thinking it would make this weekend, it's still going to be successful unless something forces the audience numbers to fall off a cliff. Including the $50 Million it made internationally, It's got $164 Million, which is $19 Million more than the projection budget.
Without looking at my graphs from last year, I don't believe there was a single movie that grossed over 100% of the Production Budget on opening weekend that didn't bring in at least a modest profit for the studio.
It's no Barbie, but it's no Indy 5 either.

I don't see it getting a big cinema release.
Sonic 3, LionKing musical seem to be the last big ones that would knock other movies down, there is also Nosferatu 2024 film which I'm not sure of, the Noserfatu budget is reported Low-ish and it has a well know cast

Mary seems to be mostly online and not much cinema release, an upcoming epic biblical film
Kraven the Hunter a Sony / Marvel comicbook thing

unless there some new indie Euro US horror movie or Neflix from SKorea or China flick or Japan anime, its almost a straight run until the end of year?

I really don't understand Bruce's reporting sometimes...
On Friday the title was "Weekend predictions: Glicked could earn a combined $200 million this weekend"
As I stated before, it did no such thing. $114 Million for Wicked, and $55 Million for Gladiator 2.
But then he puts an article out titled "Weekend projections: Wicked and Gladiator hit big"
How, dude?
You just said on Friday your model's prediction of $143 Million was too low for Wicked and you thought it would make $150 Million and that $160 Million wasn't out of the question. Your exact words were "anywhere from $120 million to $160 million".
It made $114 Million.
Lower than the low end of your prediction.
How is that hitting it big?
Wicked fell short of everyone's expectations and Gladiator II failed to make 100% of its production budget back on opening weekend.
Wicked will still make the studio money despite the bad opening weekend if the budget really is only $145 Million, but with low international numbers that budget had better only be $145 Million. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that Wicked's opening weekend was bad either. The $50 Million it made internationally makes the disappointing US opening weekend look stellar by comparison.
ETA: I have not done any reading or investigating on Wicked's international release schedule. If this is a staggered release and there's a lot of countries that it hasn't opened in yet, it's possible Wicked ends up making the studio a ton of money.
Gladiator 2 is right around a coin flip whether or not it breaks even, and that's only because the international audience went out to see this movie of 3-to-1 on the domestic attendance.
There is a very real possibility we find out that neither of these movies break even. It depends on how the holidays treat them and what the competition looks like.
Gladiator 2 needs $625 Million worldwide to break even. It has $221 Million after opening weekend. (Based off a current reported $250 Million production budget)
Wicked needs $362.5 Million worldwide to break even. It has $164 Million worldwide after opening weekend. (Based off a current reported $145 Million production budget)

They filmed a sequel at the same time they filmed the first one. Total budget was $350 Million.
They're only admitting to $145 Million on the first one, which means the 2nd movie cost $205 Million to make. And when it comes out a year from now, how about we just call it an even $210 Million with inflation factored in.
If the first movie barely eeks out a profit on $145 Million, what do you think the chances a sequel that cost $205 Million will do any better?

1. Nobody is going to wear a Gladiator T-shirt.
2. It will sell some BluRay and DVDs. Maybe a million or two worth in the first year. That's about it in 2024.
3. I'd LOVE to see them make Gladiator II toys. You could have the G.I. Joe kung-fu grip on the Denzel Washington toy. For his sword, but also for his boyfriend's sword.
4. Streaming revenue is a lie. When these streaming services are losing hundreds of millions or even billions per year, ain't nobody buying they'll make this up somewhere else. They used to be able to make money on licensing when they let somebody like Netflix show it, but now they're all going bankrupt trying to be the king of streaming.
Oh... Also...

That’s the best Monday ever for November, better than Frozen II ($12.7M on November 25, 2019), better than The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($12.3M, November 25, 2013), higher than Skyfall ($11.3M, November 12, 2012) and bigger than post-Covid’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($11.1M, November 14, 2022). Wicked‘s domestic total shoots up to $128.1M through four days.
Wow. It did better than movies from 2019, 2013 and 2012, not adjusted for four years of Bidenflation and beyond!!!????? Ya don't say.

Yeah... Wakanda Forever came out in 2022, sure. But That was the last DEI Marvel trash movie that people were cajoled into seeing before the bottom fell out for Disney Marvel and everything they put out bombed hard. It likely was the straw that broke the camel's back. Big whoop. If it wasn't for Hollywood milking the rest of the liberal white guilt in the country for everything it was worth, this movie wouldn't even be mentioned on this list.
If that story that two Wicked films were filmed at the same time for $350 Million is true, this movie SERIES is dead in the water.
It's grossed its stated $145 Million production budget back in the US alone in 6 days, but the international audience is not impressed, giving it just under $50 Million on opening weekend.
With the stated $145 Million budget, it only needs to make $362.5 Million to break even. With the numbers being put up in the US on Monday and Tuesday, I don't see this being a problem unless the bottom falls out after Moana 2 gets released and the holiday weekend is over.
But at $350 Million for producing 2 movies, you need to look at the totals for both of them. They're going to have to make $875 Million on both movies combined to break even.
It will be a LONG while before we find out that my prediction here is true, but there is zero chance that Wicked and its upcoming sequel are going to gross anything close to that number worldwide.
The only way this movie and its sequel put up the numbers they need is if the Legacy Media is right and Trump tariffs and up raising inflation to 20%. But in that case we can look forward to even the shittiest of rom-coms and horror movies breaking records because it costs $20 for a loaf of bread.
One thing I don't see anybody talking about is the marketing budget for Wicked. I imagine that they spent a LOT more on this movie than they typically do. How much do you think they paid for the first ad spot during the Superbowl?
I suspect that they're actually going to have to earn $1 Billion for this to be considered a real success by anybody who knows what they're talking about after you factor in the larger than usual marketing budget.
I doubt we'll ever know the truth on that though. The only time I've ever heard anybody state what the actual marketing budget was, was AFTER Barbie was a runaway success and they came out and admitted their GIANT marketing budget for the movie was $5 Million more than the production budget.

SPOILER ALERT: As I predicted several months ago, of all the remaining movies left in 2024, the one that I never questioned would make enough money to beat the 3 Chinese movies was Moana 2, and after its Wednesday opening day take, it's already proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that $500 Million will be EASY.
$57,500,000 in the US on Wednesday night alone, with another $8.8 Million internationally for a total of $65.3 Million in 1 day to kick off a 4 day holiday weekend. If it's releasing everywhere internationally this weekend too, this thing is going to sail past a quarter of a billion by Sunday night without a problem. $300 Million + maybe? $400 Million +?
https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Moana-2-(2024)#tab=box-office
If we can get just one more movie in 2024 that cracks $480 Million we can keep the amount of Chinese movies in the top ten to only 2. I think 3 is almost certainly a record, and is going to look extremely bad for Hollywood to cap off one of the worst years they ever had outside of the covid shutdowns that the Democrat party inflicted on everyone.

At the very start people in the USA were watching Frecnch style A Trip to the Moon or German Metropolis
I don't use the term 'Woke', I try to avoid the term and call it a weird tinseltown 'message' SJW Anti-American tranny diversity pro-islamic crap.
there is something about some movies made inside the USA that are just odd, that are anti-USA
but for now let's use 'Woke'
and I think you misunderstand 'Woke' or what annoys people, the extreme 'Politics'
Japan and Korea have brands that sell to a US audience, they do politics at times but they do not bash you over the head with a message. If there is politics it is subtle, they are not pushing politics but have foreign ideas in S.Korea, foreign languages but the USA will watch, Japanese anime and video games are consumed. Same for France it has its own brand, Italian, Sanish, Euro movies if they have something to offer people in the USA consume, the Indian RRR was respected, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon won awards, it became the highest-grossing foreign produced Mandarin-language film in American history.
Ethnicity or Race is not an issue when Morgan Freeman was playing as a persioner in Shawshank Redemption nobody said today it is 'Woke' it is a normal movie, Samuel L. Jackson playing his role as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a normal box office experience, nothing 'Woke' about it, the richest woman in the USA is a Black woman Oprah and White people watch her.
There is nothing 'Woke' about Russell Means in Last of the Mohicans nor is there a woke message in the original, Twin Peaks does not feel woke because it has Native American culture, the movies of The Twilight Saga are not 'Woke' but they are somewhat teen romance, Chief George who portrayed the character Lone Watie in Clint Eastwood’s The Outlaw Josey Wales is not 'Woke' . Also movies can be controversial without bashing you with politics, there is nothing Woke about Will Sampson’s portrayal as Chief Bromden in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest .
Kurosawa films are foreign language and loved the world over, and for a while as the Revisionist Western emerged the Italian style the spaghetti Western started to do it better than Hollywood. People wanted to see Western films produced in Europe because of better Italian sets, extras, the soundtrack with Italian flavor a new musical score, the Italy style Western beating Hollwyod at its own game which emerged in the mid-1960s.
having other enthnicity and other languages is not the 'Woke' message so I think you misunderstand what culturally drives people to an older more free Hollywood or 'Maga' and traditionalism

Woke/Woke/Woke! And while I'm at it, why is today called Black Friday? Why isn't it White Friday?
I don't recall ever hearing anybody refer to either of the Moana movies as woke. I've never seen them myself, so I couldn't say.
But all of the reasons that Second provides sarcastically as reasons why it is woke have nothing at all to do with wokeness. They are just a simple-minded retard's take on the issue, which they almost certainly got from other simple minds like Joy Ried, Rachel Maddow or Kevin Drum.
The little I know about Moana leads me to believe the property is the EXACT OPPOSITE of woke.
Woke is turning Wolverine into an androgynous 16 year old minority lesbian female.
Woke is Black Ariel.
Woke is racists blatantly pandering to minorities who don't appreciate this behavior any more than normal while people who didn't get a college "education" do.
Moana, from what little I know about it, is the exact thing the anti-woke people of all races have been asking the "creatives" for.
Make new characters written in such a way that people will fall in love with them just like they did all the predominantly white characters that historically came in the past.
When my niece was only 4 years old her parents took her on a Disney cruise. Tiana from Princess and the Frog was her favorite Disney Princess, which might be surprising because if you knew her at the time her favorite colors were Pink and Purple, and while many other Disney Princesses wore these colors, Tiana was always wearing green.
Both of her parents are Trump voters and this did not bother them one bit. In fact, my brother showed enthusiasm when telling me the story about when they got her all dressed up in her princess oufit and took her to the Princess Dinner where all the girls got to eat with all the Disney princesses. She was so excited when they were able to get her a seat next to the actress playing Tiana for the night. At some point, while believing she was actually sitting next to Princess Tiana, my niece told her that she was her favorite Princess.
This cruise actress was so touched by this, that later that day they got a knock on their cabin door and it was Tiana coming by to see her again with a Princess and the Frog coloring book she got from one of the gift shops and she wrote a wonderful little message for my niece and signed it.
The way my brother can tell stories, that was one of the most touching things I ever heard. My little niece just being herself brought that much actual joy to a complete stranger that they would go out of their way and do something like that for her in return.
Are you ready to grow up and behave like a real person anytime soon, Second?
I don't have any more time

Ken Ham is proud to announce that Answers in Genesis will be celebrating a non-Woke Christmas.
Quote:Well, isn’t that nice. AiG finds comfort in reducing the Bible to one page at the beginning of the book, and discouraging people from exploring further. After all, if they read the New Testament they might be introduced to a radical Woke character who encouraged tolerance and change. Although, if you browse YouTube, you might find a lot of loud evangelical preachers who are trying desperately to tell listeners that Jesus wasn’t actually tolerant, and that his values, and yours, are more properly founded in hate.
It wasn’t that long ago that woke was just a word I used in the context of “waking up” after being asleep. Now the word woke has permeated our culture with various meanings, including believing in what are called “progressive” (actually anti-God) values.
Over the past couple of years, many organizations and companies have been described as becoming “woke,” which usually means they have greatly restricted or abolished freedom for those with a truly Christian worldview. And in recent times, we’ve seen considerable backlash against various companies because of their woke positions (which often result in pushing a transgender ideology, etc.). But really, the woke agenda is driven by a secular/anti-Christian worldview based on man’s word rather than God’s Word!
As I often remind people, believing in a literal Genesis 1–11 is the key to being “woke-proof,” as Genesis 1–11 is the foundation for marriage, gender, and, in fact, everything! I tell people that Answers in Genesis is a “non-woke” organization and our Ark Encounter and Creation Museum are “non-woke” attractions.
As the culture becomes more secular, woke, and permeated by moral relativism, Answers in Genesis and our two attractions exist like a beautiful oasis in a desert environment increasingly devoid of biblical truth.
Right now, I’m seeing a lot of journalists joining Ham in repudiating “woke”. It’s silly. They don’t understand what “woke” is or that the Democrats were not particularly “woke” in the last campaign, so I’m seeing claims that “woke” fueled dissension, and that the liberal side was focused on arguing identity politics.
And so this narrative of succumbing to “Big Woke”, according to the American journalist Jack Mirkinson, “bears virtually no resemblance to the actual campaign we all just suffered through”. Woke talking points were a key part not of Harris’s campaign but of Trump’s – he said that Harris suddenly “became a Black person” to capitalise on her race, and his campaign spent millions on ads about transgender rights. Welcome to the culture war – where only the right is really fighting, and the other side is helping it out by punching itself in the face.
Except that Harris ran a centrist campaign, and liberals don’t argue about pronouns — if I’m told what pronoun someone prefers, I accept it and we’re done. The only people fighting over pronouns are the far right weirdos who want everyone to conform to their dogma and stereotypes, like Ken Ham.
I’m going to continue to be “woke,” as long as that means aspiring to a just and equitable world. If that means accepting a “secular/anti-Christian worldview,” then so be it — it’s a stance I’m already comfortable with.

Jude Law Misses Era Of Mid-Budget Movies: “The Heart Of Filmmaking”

and since there seems to be debate about what the Wokeism message is when a 250 Million Dollar Production movie does not entertain but pushes and lectures you with 'Woke-ism' let's recap on the Urban Dictionary Definition
Woke-ism seems to be killing movies, video games, music and comedy
Quote:
(derogatory) a 21st-century leftwing sociopolitical movement inspired by various aspects of Postmodernism and Critical Race Theory, including but not limited to: victimology, subjectivism, illiberalism, intersectionality, antiracism (reverse racism) reverse sexism, Marxism, cancel culture and safe spaces.
Social justice mobs have a stronghold over major corporations that have submitted to the doctrine of wokeism, as cowardly CEOs parrot race-baiting, Marxist nonsense to avoid getting cancelled.
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Wokeism
Quote:
victim by proxy as pretext for feigned outrage with political agenda
The trans rights protest was blatant wokeism as there was not a recognizable trans person to be seen among the angry mob.
Quote:
1. The symbolic act of "solving" an issue, done for instant gratification.
2. (Movies & TV) Using the most bland and/or stereotypical version of a minority in a Movie/TV; done to reach a wider demographic.
3. (derogatory) Used by mainly right-leaning people to villainize their opponents.
1. I can't believe Nancy Pelosi's answer to polic brutality was kneeling. This is wokeism at it's finest.
2. The wokeism of Hollywood is ruining films/TV as we know it.
3. These communist democrats are ruining our children with wokeism !!!
Quote:
Today's hottest religion. Joining it allows simple-minded people to pride themselves on believing they are more enlightened than, more compassionate than, and morally superior to, most of their fellow human beings.

When Will ‘Moana 2’ Be Streaming On Disney+?
Before Moana 2 arrives on Disney+, the movie will be available for purchase and rental on digital VOD platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, and YouTube TV. Typically, studios wait 45 to 65 days after a movie's theatrical premiere to release it digitally, and the film's box office performance will likely influence this timeline. Therefore, the earliest Moana 2 could be released digitally is January 11, 2025.
Walt Disney Pictures’ Wish premiered in theaters in November 2023 and became available on Disney+ just over three months later, in April 2024. The blockbuster Pixar and Disney film Inside Out 2 also arrived on Disney’s streaming service more than three months after its theatrical release.

With Saturday and Sunday left, it's already got $193 Million. Only $52 Million of that count is international, and though I'm surprised to see international money even included yet, I doubt very much that it is close to the full international amount so far. At least I'm pretty damn confident this doesn't include Friday's numbers and we won't get them until we get the full international projection late on Sunday.

The funniest thing about this is that I heard the movie actually IS crap.
Not woke crap. Just crap.
Word is, they were making a Moana show for streaming and then decided to make a movie out of it. So they cut down a 2 hour movie out of 8 or 10 hours of streaming content and patch-jobbed a movie together out of it.
I guess the guys at WDW gave it a 4 out of 10 and said the plot is incomprehensible because the editing was so bad and you miss a lot of the story. I think at one point they said the movie makes reference to characters that haven't ever been on screen yet, but they're being talked about as if the audience should already know who they are.
Apparently that hasn't bothered anybody except for the critics yet. It's got a 65% critic score and an 87% audience score. The Cinemascore for Moana 2 is A-.

Yup.
$386,300,000 worldwide projection through Thanksgiving weekend.
It sleepwalks past the 3 Chinese movies at this point.
I guess nobody realized that Second provided them with a free download link.

Gladiator II has $320,008,000 after Thanksgiving weekend.
Good luck getting to $625 Million to break even. You'll need it.
Hopefully that new news saying you cost $315 Million to make isn't true, or this ends even worse for you. Bruce has yet to put the Production Budget for it at The-Numbers, so I'm guessing they've been putting out ranges for this and nobody knows exactly what it costs. $250 Million seems to be the lowball number.

Did I forget to mention the urine on theater restroom tile floors and the powerful pumpkin-spice stink from the fragrances hiding the smell are the realest part of the movie-going experience for people with a discerning nose? Long after the song lyrics are forgotten (instantaneously) the odor can be re-experienced via olfactory memory. Smell-O-Vision lives on at your local movie theater!

Oh... Disregard anything I posted about the Wild Robot last night.
It appears that there is/was a glitch in Bruce's system. Now when I look at the top 100 its in 20th place. Last night into early morning it was in 8th place and only around 3.5 Million short of taking 7th place from YOLO. It had something like $476 Million worldwide last night, and now it's only showing $321 Million.
I'm assuming the glitch was last night and not this morning. It would explain how I didn't even know about this movie being in contention of bumping any of the Chinese movies, let alone all of them. I've seen this happen once before when it looked like MI7 Part 1 was profitable last year because of an extra $150 Million from China it was given overnight and then it was taken away by the next afternoon.

The success of Moana 2 is nothing to be celebrated – there is a real crisis in animation
The Disney sequel has broken records after a phenomenally lucrative opening weekend. But this isn’t necessarily the boon for cinema that fans are making it out to be, writes Louis Chilton

It’s maybe wrong to grumble when a film such as this succeeds so robustly. Looked at in isolation, Moana 2 is a bright, well-animated film with a positive message and a strong, likeable protagonist. But Moana 2 doesn’t exist in isolation. Between this and the terrible-looking Lion King prequel Mufasa, out in a matter of weeks, it’s more or less an industry-wide cry for help.
What’s more, frustrations with the contemporary model of animated blockbusters are compounded by the knowledge of just how sweet we used to have it. There was a time, even in recent memory, when studios were releasing new, completely original animations on a regular basis – think of the “golden era” Pixar run, from 1995’s Toy Story through to around the year 2010. So we shouldn’t see Moana 2’s box office as a victory – it’s made a fortune from the bare minimum. Maybe children can’t reasonably be expected to twig this. But for everyone else, it’s time to demand more.

If you're going to make arguments like this, why not point out that no actual records have been broken at all.
Might as well call out the system for everything.
Inflation is the only reason that most of these records even get broken anymore.
As I stated earlier this year, nobody was going to come close to breaking the R-Rated movie worldwide gross, no matter how many times they'll tell you that Deadpool 3 did.
That record was set in the early 1970's by The Exorcist which grossed over $3 Billion when adjusted for inflation, or nearly 3 times as much as D&W.
Regardless of whether or not anything in this article is actually true, failing to mention that Moana 2 hasn't actually broken any records at all seems like a missed opportunity.
