If getting on medicaid is as simple as lying about your assets and just hoping they never bother to investigate those claims, that is a huge fucking problem. Nobody should ever be able to get on a program with an asset limit without easily implemented computer code that could at the bare minimum weed out a majority of the people trying to scam.

Experts agree that imposing tariffs results in a substantial portion of the tariffs being borne by consumers of the country that enacts the tariffs, through price increases. Trump says the experts are wrong unless they agree with him.
The other day Larry Summers declared that administration claims that foreigners will absorb the entire cost of tariffs are “ludicrous.” I’m not sure why this declaration was considered newsworthy; Larry was only echoing what every economic principles textbook and 95 percent of economists say (see the chart at the top of this post.)
Still, Larry’s statement did inspire some headlines, and got a response from Scott Bessent, the Treasury secretary. Did Bessent explain why he thinks the administration is right and almost the entire economics profession is wrong? No: he immediately accused Summers of being, in effect, a paid protestor: Bessent on Larry Summers saying consumers pay for tariffs: "Maybe he should let the world know who his client list is and why he's talking about things like this."
Trump and his minions already have a totalitarian mindset, in which there is no such thing as legitimate skepticism of the Leader’s proclamations. Anyone who expresses doubt, whether it’s Larry Summers or the Wall Street Journal editorial page, must be a corrupt globalist, or a woke radical left-wing Marxist, or maybe both.
Do people in the business world still think Bessent is a sensible guy who will exert a stabilizing influence on Trump policies?
There’s a lot more one could say about the Trumpist mindset and its implications. But for now, let me just note that it’s one more reason nobody should believe claims that there’s a serious intellectual agenda behind the administration’s economic policies. Serious agendas arise from hard thinking and debate; what we have here are people dedicated to the proposition that anything Trump says is right, and anyone who questions the perfection of his thought is an enemy with evil motives.

This will be the first natural disaster to happen after President Donald Trump shut down America's international aid agency with potentially devastating consequences.
The impact in the aftermath of this earthquake is likely to be severe. Trump's decision to shut down the US Agency for International Development was already reported to have decimated US aid operations in Myanmar. Its global impact is hard to overstate. American aid had provided 40% of developmental aid worldwide.
Yesterday, Trump promised Myanmar aid for the earthquake. In reality, his administration has fired most of the people most experienced at organising that help and shut down the means to provide it.
The last of its staff were ironically only let go yesterday even as the president was making lofty promises to help.

A senior health official in the US, who was seen as a guardrail against any future politicisation of the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of life-saving vaccines, has resigned abruptly, citing the health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr’s “misinformation and lies”.
Dr Peter Marks served as the FDA’s top vaccine official. He had been lauded by Donald Trump during the US president’s first term for his role in Operation Warp Speed, the initiative that developed, manufactured and helped distribute the Covid-19 vaccines.
Multiple media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, citing people familiar with the matter, reported late on Friday that Marks had been given the choice to resign or be fired by a Health and Human Services (HHS) department official. He chose to resign. The FDA is a key federal agency within HHS.
In a resignation letter, referring to Kennedy, Marks wrote: “It has become clear that truth and transparency are not desired by the secretary, but rather he wishes subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies.”
Marks also issued a stark warning, according to media outlets who obtained the letter, saying: “Undermining confidence in well-established vaccines that have met the high standards for quality, safety and effectiveness that have been in place for decades at FDA is irresponsible, detrimental to public health and a clear danger to our nation’s health, safety and security.”
The departure follows reports that Kennedy has turned to a noted vaccine sceptic, David Geier, to lead the HHS in a study of potential links between vaccines and autism. Any links between autism and vaccines have long been debunked.
Kennedy has claimed he is not anti-vaccine, but for years he has led a movement to sow doubts about their safety and effectiveness. In 2021, a group then led by Kennedy called for the emergency approval of Covid-19 vaccines to be revoked, saying: “The current risks of serious adverse events or deaths outweigh the benefits.”
Studies later showed that claim was inaccurate. A study by the Commonwealth Fund found that Covid-19 vaccines saved 3.2 million American lives and prevented more than 18m hospitalisations through November 2022.
During his confirmation process, Kennedy ultimately secured the votes of almost all Republican senators, including Dr Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, by promising that he would not change the FDA’s system for approving vaccines.
But that system was overseen by Marks, who has been with the FDA since 2012 and oversaw the division’s approval process for vaccines, biotech and blood products.
The Wall Street Journal reported a statement on the resignation by an HHS official: “If Peter Marks does not want to get behind restoring science to its golden standard and promoting radical transparency, then he has no place at FDA under the strong leadership of secretary Kennedy.”
Marks’s departure comes a day after the Trump administration said it was laying off 10,000 employees at HHS. In comments about the move posted on YouTube, Kennedy suggested his office was facing opposition inside the department from “defiant bureaucrats” who had stopped his office from gaining access to “closely guarded databases that

The team evaluated how effectively the participants adhered to eight different largely-plant-based diets: the Alternative Health Eating Index (AHEI), the Alternative Mediterranean Diet (aMED), the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet (DASH), the MIND diet, the Healthful Plant-Based Diet, the Planetary Health Diet Index, the Empirically Inflammatory Dietary Pattern, and the Empirical Dietary Index for Hyperinsulinemia.
Of the participants, 10 percent were identified as aging healthfully and followed the eight diets. Those who closely followed the AEHI and PHDI diets were linked with optimal healthy aging patterns.
The AHEI diet was found to be especially beneficial. It was developed to prevent chronic disease and emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and healthy fats while limiting red meat, refined grains, and sugar.
Participants scoring highest on this diet were found to have an 86 percent greater likelihood of healthy aging by age 70 and a 2.2-fold higher likelihood by age 75 compared to those with the lowest scores. The PHDI diet also emphasizes plant-based foods and reduces animal-based food intake.
Other diets researchers looked at that were linked to healthy aging were the aMED which follows the Mediterranean model and the DASH diet. The aMED diet prioritizes olive oil, nuts, whole grains, and moderate fish intake. DASH is known for lowering blood pressure and focuses on fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy.
“Maintaining a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, unsaturated fats, nuts, and legumes during mid-life is linked to a higher likelihood of healthy aging along with better cognitive, physical, and mental health,” Guasch-Ferré told The Epoch Times.
Conversely, higher consumption of ultra-processed foods, particularly processed meats and sugary beverages, was linked to a decreased chance of aging healthfully.

The president on Saturday also said he has “absolutely” had real conversations about annexing Greenland, which is currently a semiautonomous Danish territory.
“We’ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100%,” Trump said.
He added that there’s a “good possibility that we could do it without military force” but that “I don’t take anything off the table.”
This comes one day after Vice President JD Vance visited Greenland with his wife, Usha, and spoke to service members at Pituffik Space Base, a U.S. Space Force base on the northwestern coast of Greenland.
While there, Vance said, “Our message to Denmark is very simple — you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland.”
Asked what message acquiring Greenland would send to Russia and the rest of the world, Trump said, “I don’t really think about that. I don’t really care. Greenland’s a very separate subject, very different. It’s international peace. It’s international security and strength.”

President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of seeking a third term in the White House, which is prohibited by the Constitution under the 22nd Amendment, saying in an exclusive interview with NBC News that there were methods for doing so and clarifying that he was “not joking.”
“A lot of people want me to do it,” Trump said in a Sunday-morning phone call with NBC News, referring to his allies. “But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”
NBC News asked about a possible scenario in which Vice President JD Vance would run for office and then pass the role to Trump. Trump responded that “that’s one” method.

Elon Musk has promised he would eliminate the nearly $2 trillion budget deficit in year one. Last night on Fox, he predicted he would get halfway there by the end of May. His critics have insisted that his goal is unrealistic, and that he won’t accomplish nearly as much deficit reduction as he claims.
The critics are understating the case. DOGE won’t just fall short of Musk’s deficit-reduction goals. It will, in all probability, increase the deficit. Probably by a lot.
Begin on the savings side. Despite wreaking massive havoc, Musk has accomplished little in terms of saving money for the government. Many of the impressive-sounding budget savings DOGE has posted, in a gesture of putative transparency, have turned out to be fake. And when the people in charge of the enterprise are relying on comical errors, such as taking credit for programs eliminated years ago and confusing million with billion, one should rightly question their basic competence.

Budget experts have had trouble verifying the actual savings, but they appear to be below the level of a rounding error. Jessica Riedl, a budget expert at the Manhattan Institute, recently estimated the savings so far at about $2 billion, or one-tenth of 1 percent of Musk’s original goal. Prediction markets, which less than two months ago expected DOGE to cut $300 billion in spending in the first year, are even more pessimistic than Riedl: They now expect a grand total of $1 billion in savings.

But those are just gross savings. Some of Musk’s haphazard cuts will produce tiny savings in terms of salary while forfeiting much larger ones down the road, costing the government money. One small example: Musk fired the technician who had been servicing the HVAC systems at a Veterans Affairs complex in Illinois. You can save money on upkeep in the short run, but eventually, the systems will break, and replacing them will cost a lot more money (unless DOGE is willing to let the government’s physical assets deteriorate to worthlessness).

The largest cost, by far, will come from Musk’s meddling with the IRS. DOGE has moved to fire nearly 20,000 employees in the agency, kneecapping the government’s ability to collect taxes. The IRS released a preliminary survey showing that it expects revenue to fall 10 percent, or $500 billion, short of expected levels. Banks and other lender (Countrywide) were writing sketchy variable rate mortages that were bound to implode, bundling them into mortgage backed investments, insuring them thru AIG, and selling them in tranches.
Altho various States Attorney General wanted to prosecute the banks, the GWB admin said it was a Federal matter, FORBADE prosecution at the state level and then... sat on its hands bc go-go home and stock market prices and hedge funds created a simulacrum of prosperity and growth.
Obama dutifully bailed out banks etc, but GWB fostered the cancer, and Bill set the stage by doing away with the Glass-Steagall bank regulation.

One odd feature of U.S. politics is that business people, especially small business owners, always seems to believe that they will do better under Republicans, even though history shows that business does better under Democrats. Small business owners supported Trump in the last election, despite ample evidence that he would be very bad for business.
And now they’re getting a rude awakening.
Let’s talk for a second about price controls.
A few weeks ago Viktor Orban, Hungary’s de facto dictator and a darling of the MAGA set, announced that he was imposing profit-margin caps — basically price controls — on groceries. I intended to write something about that as a warning that something similar might happen in the United States, that business people were fools if they assumed that Donald Trump was on their side.
Unfortunately, I never got around to writing that post. So I missed my chance to be prophetic, because it has already happened: Trump reportedly told auto executives sometime in March not to raise prices in response to tariffs. He denies that he said it, but the reporting looks solid. His headline-making assertion that he “couldn’t care less” about rising car prices seems to have been about imported autos, not domestic production.
The reason I expected Trump to follow in Orban’s footsteps is that Trump, like Orban, clearly doesn’t have any fixed principles other than power and self-aggrandizement. Under Trump, policy won’t reflect any consistent ideology. It will, instead, change with his perception of personal advantage, his temper tantrums, his whims and his malignant narcisissim. If he doesn’t like rising prices, he’ll try to stop inflation through bullying.
In short, MAGA will be very bad for business.
Most immediately, it seems as if Trump doesn’t care that his tariffs will raise business costs in addition to raising prices for consumers. We’ll get a better sense of how much costs will rise after “Liberation Day,” the big announcement of new tariffs planned for Wednesday. (War is peace, freedom is slavery, tariffs are tax cuts.) But it’s the increase has already begun.
Indeed, thanks to tariffs already in effect the U.S. economy is already getting unscrewed, with manufacturers having a hard time keeping their stuff together.
You see, steep tariffs on steel and aluminum were the opening salvo in Trump’s trade war, and they are being applied not just to the metals themselves but to anything made from the metals, including screws, nuts and bolts. And foreign producers are not absorbing the tariffs; they are sharply raising prices.
This was, of course, predictable and predicted. Tariffs don’t just make foreign goods more expensive to consumers. In a world where many of the goods we import are productive inputs like screws — or auto parts — tariffs directly raise the cost of manufacturing in the United States. Yet Trump’s threats against automakers suggests that he thinks he can control inflation through intimidation.
The direct effect of tariff-driven rising costs is, however, just the beginning of the ways Trumpism will be bad for business.
In the past I’ve been skeptical about claims that uncertainty is a big factor in the economy. During the Obama years vague appeals to “uncertainty” often seemed, in practice, to be invoked as a fancy way of saying “policies I don’t like,” and was used as an excuse for ignoring that fiscal austerity forced by congressional Republicans held the economy back. He said that during the first Iraq war, he was "heavily involved" with targeting of Iraqi Scud missiles, their production capacity, their command and control and their operational activity, to try and interdict their launches. While in Georgetown, Guyana, on Thursday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio was asked by a reporter about what led to the arrest of Tufts University graduate student Rümeysa Öztürk. Rubio seemed to downplay the influence of the op-ed, written alongside three other Tufts graduate students, instead insinuating without evidence that Öztürk, a Turkish citizen, had vandalized her university, occupied buildings, and harassed students.
“If you lie to us and get a visa and then enter the United States and with that visa participate in that sort of activity, we’re going to take away your visa,” Rubio said.
Government documents included in court filings, however, don’t back up Rubio’s claims of supposed unlawful behavior.
Several days before her arrest on Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security revoked Öztürk’s student visa without notifying her, according to a DHS document through its Student and Exchange Visitor Program, through which Öztürk had obtained her visa.
The government didn’t claim that Öztürk had broken any laws but instead cited a civil law provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act. The provision gives the secretary of state the authority to request the deportation of an individual who is not a U.S. citizen, if they have “reasonable ground to believe” the individual’s presence in the country hurts the government’s foreign policy interests.
The government has made the same argument in detaining former Columbia University student activist leader Mahmoud Khalil and Georgetown University scholar Badar Khan Suri, as well as in its efforts to arrest Columbia student Yunseo Chung.
In each of these cases, attorneys for the students argued the Trump administration’s crackdown on students and academics over their support for Palestine are ultimately an attack on their free speech rights.
Öztürk’s case is notable in that her detention and possible deportation may very well center on a published piece of journalism.
“Her arrest and detention appear to be based solely on her co-authorship of an op-ed in her school newspaper,” Öztürk’s attorneys wrote in a habeas petition for her release filed on Friday. “Rümeysa’s arrest and detention are designed to punish her speech and chill the speech of others. Indeed, her arrest and detention are part of a concerted and systemic effort by Trump administration officials to punish students and others identified with pro-Palestine activism.”
Attorneys said Öztürk feared for her safety after pro-Israel group Canary Mission posted about her in early February, pointing to her 2024 essay. Canary Mission, which shares personal information about pro-Palestine activists online and is often used by other Zionist groups to dox people, said Öztürk took part in “anti-Israel activism” and cited her 2024 opinion piece as its sole source to back its claim.
While it is not known whether the State Department was aware of the Canary Mission post, right-wing Zionist groups have been willing collaborators in helping direct the administration toward “pro-Hamas” individuals for deportation.

1. There is No Serious ‘Fraud’ Problem with Social Security
To put it plainly – millions of dead people aren’t getting Social Security checks. This Musk claim was easily debunked; unfortunately, that did not prevent Donald Trump from repeating it on numerous occasions.
Beyond this falsehood, there is no other evidence that the system has a substantial problem with fraud. In 2024, an inspector general report found that there had been $71 billion in improper payments over a seven-year-period; about one-third of those payments were recovered. This amounts to roughly 0.3 percent of the total benefits paid out, which is an extremely high rate of accuracy – you can visit the Annual Improper Payments Dashboard to see how it compares to other government agencies, many of which have drawn no interest from DOGE.
2. Social Security is Not Going Bankrupt
Musk’s claim that Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme is nothing new; privatizers have been making the same claim for decades, trying to convince people (especially younger workers) that they’ll never see any of the money they’ve paid into the program. While it is true that Social Security is dependent on people paying their taxes to the government, that is also true for the repayment of government bonds – and no one calls government bonds a Ponzi Scheme.
What has happened to Social Security is fairly well understood. In order to account for the retirement of Baby Boomers, Social Security built up a massive surplus. The rhetoric about a ‘crisis’ is rooted in the process of using up that surplus. Even after those funds are exhausted, the program would be able to pay the majority of scheduled benefits. If political leaders were to make changes to the program now – raising the income tax to generate more revenue from the very wealthy, for instance – Social Security would be strengthened for the long term.
3. Social Security is Remarkably Efficient
Since the “E” in DOGE stands for Efficiency, you would think they might be able to spot an efficiently managed program. That is precisely how Social Security operates. The administrative costs associated with Social Security are less than 0.4 percent of benefits paid per year – far less than the typical 401(k) retirement plan, where administrative costs can add up to 20 percent or more of the benefits that are actually paid. Given that Social Security pays out close to $1.4 trillion in benefits every year, this is a remarkably lean and efficient program.
4. Privatization is a Terrible Idea
One of the most common claims about Social Security is that we would all make more money if we simply invested our money on our own. This idea came back recently during a retirement industry summit held by the giant investment firm BlackRock.
There’s no mystery why investment firms advocate for some form of privatization (though they tend to avoid using that word): They would earn billions of dollars in fees for managing these accounts. The idea of a stronger return from a privatized approach is especially attractive when the stock market is booming. Of course, things look very differently when the market goes down – as it inevitably does.
There are a host of other unanswered questions about how to even manage a privatized system. Policies would need to be crafted to regulate the plans, manage the efficient withdrawal of funds, and plan for the possible need for government bailouts. There is also the issue of how privatization would impact current retirees whose benefits are supported by current workers.
And, perhaps most importantly, private accounts would require benefit cuts. The privatization proposals under the second Bush administration included deep benefit cuts for all retirees, which was one of the main reasons the plan was so deeply unpopular. In one scene, Musk challenges the CTO of PayPal, Max Levchin, to an arm wrestle to resolve a disagreement about operating systems. Musk wins and enlists a team of engineers to rewrite the existing code. The effort takes an entire year and achieves nothing other than distracting engineers from a dire fraud problem on the service. But Isaacson ties this up in a mini-redemption arc: Levchin is seen marveling at Musk’s technical expertise. As in Jobs, Isaacson employs his troubled-genius bait and switch, recounting an unhinged Musk anecdote and then justifying it with a moment of brilliance.
The trouble is, there is very little in Musk’s early life that offers any evidence of genius, creative talent, or even above-average intelligence. He is an emotionally detached child who sits in class staring into space. He likes computer games and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. He gets As and Bs. The only evidence of superlative capability that Isaacson can conjure is that Musk read his dad’s encyclopedias and made small rockets with chlorine and brake fluid. What does stand out among this otherwise entirely unremarkable youth are stories in which Musk succeeds through dumb luck and aggression. In one, Musk competes in a Dungeons and Dragons tournament with his brother and cousins. The game master tells them that their mission is to identify the bad guy among the opposing players. On the first move, and without any evidence, Musk correctly guesses that the game master himself is the bad guy. The others accuse Musk of cheating. How did he know? “These guys were idiots,” Musk explains to Isaacson. “It was so obvious.” Any reader can see that this story is just Musk being a cocky teenage boy. Isaacson, however, takes it as proof that Musk could “think different.” Musk’s big break comes when he sells his first company, Zip2, at the height of the dot-com boom for $307 million. Zip2 is a searchable business directory that uses map software to give users directions. It’s not exactly the Mona Lisa, but, as Isaacson insists, “some of the best innovations come from combining two previous innovations.” Musk parlays the capital from that sale into an online-payments business that, fortunately, merges with PayPal. What does he contribute? An idea that new users could sign up with their email addresses instead of their Social Security numbers. Isaacson: “Like Steve Jobs, he had a passion for simplicity when it came to designing user interface screens.”
If there is anything remarkable that emerges about Musk in the biography, it is his grandiose, cosmic sense of mission — his obsession with making humanity multi-planetary, for example — and his absurd appetite for risk. The combination could be inspiring for those Musk worked with — and it certainly makes for good marketing. Like Jobs, Musk’s great talent is in self-mythologizing. He builds his cult of personality not around the guru-creative ideal, as Jobs did, but as a crazed, workaholic, alpha-male superhero: a manic Iron Man sending a Tesla Roadster into space. Isaacson credulously regurgitates Musk’s lore, just as he did in Jobs, recounting an anecdote in which Musk plays a game of Texas Hold ’Em and goes all in on every single hand — losing, doubling up — until he eventually wins. “It would be a theme in his life,” Isaacson writes. “Avoid taking chips off the table; keep risking them.”
To redeem Musk as a Jobs-like genius, Isaacson leans heavily on the “crazy” element of the “think different” campaign. It is the “crazy ones,” the ones who go all in at poker, who change the world. The problem is, as the biography progresses, the craziness intensifies even as it bears little connection to the genuine achievements of Musk’s companies, which are adeptly run by very talented employees who do their best to keep Musk out of the way. Musk-Trump inherited a state with unprecedented power and functionality, and are taking it apart. They also inherited a set of alliances and relationships that underpinned the largest economy in world history. This too they are breaking.
The American vice-president, JD Vance, visited an American base Greenland for three hours yesterday, along with his wife. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and his wife also came along. Fresh from illegally using an unsafe social media platform to carry out an entirely unnecessary group chat in which they leaked sensitive data about an ongoing military attack to a reporter, Waltz and Vance perhaps hoped to change the subject by tagging along on a trip which was initially billed as Vance’s wife watching a dogsled race.
The overall context was Donald Trump’s persistent claim that America must take Greenland, which is an autonomous region of Denmark. The original plan had been that Usha Vance would visit Greenlanders, apparently on the logic that the Second Lady would be an effective animatrice of colonial subjection; but none of them wanted to see her, and Greenland’s businesses refused to serve as a backdrop to photo ops or even to serve the uninvited Americans. So instead the American couples all made a very quick visit to Pituffik Space Base. (Pete Hegseth, another group chatter, stayed home; but his wife was in the news as well, as an unorthodox participant in sensitive military discussions.)
At the base, in the far north of the island, the American visitors had pictures taken of themselves and ate lunch with servicemen and servicewomen. They treated the base as the backdrop to a press conference where they could say things they already thought; nothing was experienced, nothing was learned, nothing sensible was said. Vance, who never left the base, and has never before visited Greenland, was quite sure how Greenlanders should live. He made a political appeal to Greenlanders, none of whom was present, or anywhere near him. He claimed that Denmark was not protecting the security of Greenlanders in the Arctic, and that the United States would. Greenland should therefore join the United States.
It takes some patience to unwind all of the nonsense here.
The base at Pituffik (formerly Thule) only exists because Denmark permitted the United States to build it at a sensitive time. It has served the United States for decades as a central part of its nuclear armory and then as an early-warning system against Soviet and then Russian nuclear attack.
When Vance says that Denmark is not protecting Greenland and the base, he is wishing away generations of cooperation, as well as the NATO alliance itself. Denmark was a founding member of NATO, and it is already American’s job to defend Denmark and Greenland, just as it is Denmark’s job (as with other members) to defend the United States.
Americans might chuckle at that idea, but such arrogance is unwarranted. We are the only ones ever to have invoked Article 5, the mutual defense obligation of the NATO treaty, after 9/11; and our European allies did respond. Per capita more Danish soldiers were killed in the Afghan war than were American soldiers. Do we remember them? Thank them?

In a bid to step up deportations, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) wants access to the IRS’s most sensitive data – taxpayer records – to help identify and deport undocumented immigrants. But experts warn this could trigger a massive drop in tax compliance, costing states and the federal government up to $97 billion.
That’s how much undocumented immigrants paid in taxes in 2022, according to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy. Many file returns not just to follow the rules, but in hopes that proving they’ve paid taxes might one day support a bid for legal residency.
If ICE starts using IRS data to locate them, that incentive disappears. “The mere fact this is being talked about… is going to lead to declining compliance,” said ITEP’s Carl Davis.

The Montreal Gazette reported that Aisha Ahmad, a political scientist at the University of Toronto, said that the American military would likely easily defeat Canada were Trump to really give the green light for an invasion.
However, he also said that wouldn't be the end of the story as Canadians would not passively accept being conquered.
In fact, Ahmad believes that Canadians would wage a bloody, decades-long insurgency against the United States until the Americans left their country.
“It’s impossible to annex Canada without violence,” said Ahmad, who in the past has advised American officials at the United States Department of Defense about counter-insurgency strategies. “No one is born an insurgent or resistance fighter. This is something that happens to people when their mom is killed, or when their kids are unable to get to a hospital. People fight back because they have to.”
He said that the U.S. military would struggle to occupy Canada when hundreds of thousands of Canadians would be engaged in a concerted campaign of sabotage that they would adopt as a "secret, part-time job."
"Trump is delusional if he believes that 40 million Canadians will passively accept conquest," he emphasized.
In fact, it would only take one percent of the Canadian population working as insurgents to produce a force of 400,000 fighters, which would be ten times the number of Taliban fighters who eventually pushed the American military out of Afghanistan after a 20-year occupation.

There’s no plan, secret or otherwise, behind Trump’s tariffs

Here’s the story: Trumpers are claiming that tariffs
1. Won’t increase prices, because foreign producers will absorb the cost
2. Will cause a large shift in U.S. demand away from imports to domestic production
3. Will raise huge amounts of revenue
If you think about it for a minute, you realize that (1) is inconsistent with (2): If prices of imports don’t rise, why would consumers switch to domestically produced goods? At the same time, (2) is inconsistent with (3): If imports drop a lot, tariffs won’t raise a lot of money, because there won’t be much to tax.
So the public story about tariffs doesn’t make any sense. And Trump’s rants about tariffs go beyond nonsense.

If you feel less than enthusiastic about filing your federal income taxes this year, you're not alone. IRS filing data and a recent survey shed light on a growing trend: Many are hesitant to file taxes in 2025.
This tax season, the IRS has reported a notable downturn in tax return submissions compared to previous years.
Why? Possible reasons range from concerns about IRS workforce reductions to general economic uncertainty.
A March survey of 1,003 respondents conducted by Qualtrics on behalf of Intuit Credit Karma also revealed some interesting data points. Nearly a quarter of respondents felt less concerned about making errors on their tax returns this year, while almost half worried about receiving a timely refund.
Meanwhile, according to the survey, 17% of millennials have contemplated not filing at all. They reported a belief that audit risk has decreased due to recent downsizing at the IRS.

If broad 20 percent tariffs are implemented and other countries retaliate with tariffs of their own, the disposable income of the lowest-income households could drop by 5.5 percent, while it would drop by just 1.9 percent for the highest-income households.
According to the analysis, the tariffs would cost households in the second lowest income decile, on average, $2,400 when other countries retaliate. For households in the middle, it would be $3,800 per household on average, and for those in the top tenth, it would be $9,500 per household on average.

Trump Just Pardoned … a Corporation?

The move surprised scholars of presidential pardons, which have traditionally been considered the domain of human beings. Several experts contacted by The Intercept said they were unaware of any prior instances of corporations granted full pardons.
Trump’s pardon of HDR Global Trading, the owner and operator of crypto exchange BitMEX, was issued at the same time as pardons for three of the company’s co-founders and one of its employees.
The company and the four employees, including influential Bitcoin booster Arthur Hayes, pleaded guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act, which requires businesses to take steps to prevent money laundering.
Prosecutors said the company pretended to pull out of the U.S. market to avoid complying with the law, but knew its withdrawal was nothing more than a “sham,” even seeking out U.S.-based influencers to market its platform.
The company pleaded guilty last July. Two months ago, a federal judge handed it a $100 million fine and two years’ probation. The fine was supposed to be paid within 60 days of the judgment’s entry into the court record. The company said it had not paid the fine before receiving the pardon. The timing of Trump’s pardon means the company avoided the fine deadline by hours.
If the company had paid the judgment, legal scholars said, there would be no refund. Under 1877 Supreme Court precedent, the president’s pardon power “cannot touch moneys in the treasury of the United States, except expressly authorized by act of Congress.”
The first known corporate request for a pardon was in 1975, according to a report from the time. President Gerald Ford’s White House rejected the request.
To Stanford University law school professor Bernadette Meyler, Trump’s pardon last week evoked the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United.
“While we have seen the rise of a trend of treating corporations as persons in other areas of law, we haven’t seen that so far in the area of pardoning,” she said.
Worrying Precedent?
Several observers said they were worried about the pardon’s implications. “Putting corporate pardons on the table strengthens Trump’s corrupt and authoritarian power over corporations,” said Rick Claypool, research director for consumer advocacy group Public Citizen’s president’s office. “This has the potential to trigger a lobbying frenzy for any corporation that has faced federal enforcement.”
Claypool pointed to the crypto industry’s cozy relationship with the Trump administration. The Trump administration has already halted or dropped 14 cases targeting crypto companies. The pardon last week sent another message to the corporate world, he said.

Personally, actual good is bland and unproductive. Those who know how evil works and use evil techniques are not bland and unproductive. I never wanted to be "good" myself. I was intending to write a Firefly story about that very idea called River Tam and the Problem of Evil. River has an admirable goal and will be fighting evil with greater evil. Her methods would not be approved by the Democratic Party or her brother, "Mr. Goody Two Shoes", but she does save millions of lives, which is a common trope in sci-fi.
There are obvious reasons why evil fucking fools who have no decent purposes like Trump or President Andrew Johnson can remain President. The reason is that the so-called "good" people feel it is wrong to kill or merely evict evil people from office. Both Trump and Johnson were impeached, but so-called Good people decided to save Trump and Johnson. Good people much prefer talking and more talking, and even more talking after that, rather than making an irrevocable decision to stop evil even if that requires removing the evil asshole from office right now as if you were channeling an imaginary character such as River Tam who can see the future once the evil asshole stays in office long enough to complete his plan.

Last Sunday on Air Force One, Trump was even more ebullient. “We’re going to become so rich, you’re not going to know where to spend all that money,” he said.
Trump says he’ll use revenue from tariffs to “offset” more big tax cuts.
Those tax cuts will disproportionately benefit wealthy Americans and big corporations.
But revenue raised from tariffs will be coming disproportionately from average working people.
It's another scam.

Lessons from far enough in the past might be instructive. Here is story about a government official officially killing Americans. Apparently, nobody would stop him with a bullet because good people believe killing evil people is wrong while evil people don’t see a reason to stop other evil people:

I am the great-granddaughter of Wayne B Wheeler, leader of the Anti-Saloon League in the era of Prohibition. While this may sound like a mundane bureaucratic position, Wayne B (as he was known in the family) was no mere bureaucrat. He was passionately, fanatically and obsessively opposed to the consumption of alcohol, and spent much of his adult years trying to eradicate this ‘poison’ from American life.
After the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment to the US Constitution banning alcohol, Wayne B, who had championed the effort, expected Americans’ cravings for alcohol to evaporate. But they did not. Bootleggers transported and sold illegal alcohol, speakeasies flourished across America, and people devised ways to distill industrial alcohol to make it drinkable.
In response, the Bureau of Prohibition, under Wayne B’s guidance, decided to try a new tactic. In 1926, they began mixing poison – yes, poison – with industrial alcohol to prevent people from distilling and drinking it. Moderate voices in the anti-saloon movement suggested using non-lethal additives like soap to achieve the same ends, but Wayne B insisted on deadly poison, reasoning that ‘the Government is under no obligation to furnish people with alcohol that is drinkable when the Constitution forbids it.’
During the next seven years, until Prohibition was repealed in 1933, between 10,000 and 50,000 Americans were blinded, crippled or died horrific, agonising deaths from drinking this poisoned alcohol. It was a national catastrophe. News outlets and social service organisations raised the alarm and desperately pleaded for people to avoid distilled alcohol; yet the deaths continued. Wayne B was gratified and unrepentant: ‘The person who drinks this industrial alcohol,’ he reasoned, ‘is a deliberate suicide.’ Wayne B washed his hands of these deaths, comfortable in the conviction that people who drank alcohol illegally and died had simply got what was coming to them.
A hundred years later, when I learned of Wayne B’s poison campaign for the first time, I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I felt sick to my stomach, not only because of the sheer callousness of Wayne B’s actions but also because of my family’s history of alcoholism.

The above story about the Federal government adding poison to alcohol during prohibition was far enough in the past that it might be instructive. Here is a story that is happening now. Trump is killing the American vaccine industry but there are no good people communicating to Trump “Stop or you are dead, you evil asshole.” Good people won’t do more than complain about elected authorities exercising authority.

Less than a year after COVID-19 upended life as we know it and killed the first of what would become more than 7 million people, the FDA and other regulators around the world authorized the first mRNA vaccine. Co-developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, the vaccine was based on new biotechnology that uses the body’s own machinery to produce disease-fighting antibodies. Authorization for a second mRNA vaccine from Moderna followed shortly after. The speed with which they were developed and distributed was unprecedented; The mumps vaccine had taken four years.
The speed was only possible thanks to the more than $330 million in federal NIH grants that had supported three decades of underlying research into mRNA. Much of the heavy lifting of discovery and even testing had been done by the time the Biden and Trump Administrations spent over $30 billion to develop, purchase and distribute the vaccines. Today underlying mRNA technology, which helped save millions of lives, prevent hospitalizations and mitigate instances of long Covid, is now also being used to tackle a wide range of diseases — bird flu, cancer, heart failure.
But despite those COVID successes — and Trump’s ongoing attempts for take credit for them — the president’s administration and base are now attacking mRNA. And they’re doing it in a way that might threaten not only next-generation vaccines for the pandemics to come, but U.S. biotechnology leadership in a market estimated to be worth almost $20 billion.
Misinformation about mRNA vaccines is widespread, false claims that they are deadly, change people’s DNA or somehow enable mind control. And though widely debunked, these conspiracies have inspired concerted efforts around the country to end federal funding for the development of vaccines and other treatments based on mRNA.

Kentucky lawmakers don’t want mRNA vaccines given to minors. Idaho legislators want to ban their use for the next 10 years; Texas legislators want to ban them entirely. And, under the leadership of one of the biggest spreaders of mRNA vaccine misinformation, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has begun a review of its investments in related vaccine research as part of a looming gutting of the Department of Health and Human Services that will see over 10,000 jobs cut in addition to 10,000 workers who’ve already taken a voluntary layoff.

Just a quick update after Trump’s Rose Garden speech.
I guess it’s just possible that when we get details about the Trump tariffs they will be lower than what he just announced, but based on what he said, he’s gone full-on crazy. It’s not just that he appears to be imposing much higher tariffs than almost anyone expected. He’s also making false claims about our trading partners — not sure in this case whether they’re lies, because he may be truly ignorant — that will both enrage them and make it very hard to back down.
Basically, he’s claiming that the rest of the world is placing very high tariffs on U.S. products, and that he’s imposing “reciprocal” tariffs that are only half what they impose on us. Here’s the chart he showed:
The left column show the tariffs others are supposedly charging on US products — and it’s completely crazy. Focus on the European Union. The EU, like the United States, has generally low tariffs; the average tariff it charges on US goods is less than 3 percent.
So where does this 39 percent number come from? I have no idea. Many people speculated that Trump would count value-added taxes as tariffs, even though they aren’t — European producers selling to the EU market pay the same VAT as US producers, so it doesn’t discriminate and therefore isn’t protectionist. But even if you get that wrong, EU VAT rates are in the vicinity of 20 percent, so you still can’t get anywhere close to 39 percent.
You have to wonder whether Elon Musk’s Dunning-Kruger kids are now producing tariff numbers.
But you know that having once claimed that Europe charges tariffs more than 10 times as high as reality, Trump will never drop that claim. I don’t know how many people noticed, but he’s still claiming that we’re subsidizing Canada by $200 billion a year. Aside from the basic mistake of claiming that a Canadian trade surplus means that we’re somehow subsidizing Canada, he’s inflating the actual trade surplus by a factor of three. Many, many people have pointed out the error, but Trump is sticking with it, the same way Musk is sticking with the millions of dead Social Security beneficiaries thing.
If you had any hopes that Trump would step back from the brink, this announcement, between the very high tariff rates and the complete falsehoods about what other countries do, should kill them.

The rules governing tariffs and the negotiating process that brought those tariffs down over time grew out of the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act, devised by FDR in 1934. The growth in international trade under that system had some negative aspects but was on balance very good for America and the world. It was, in fact, one of our greatest policy achievements.
Yesterday Donald Trump burned it all down. Here’s what just happened to the average U.S. tariff rate:

The tariffs Trump announced were higher than almost anyone expected. This is a much bigger shock to the economy than the infamous Smoot-Hawley tariff of 1930, especially when you bear in mind that international trade is about three times as important now as it was then.
The size of the tariffs, however, wasn’t the only shocking thing about the Rose Garden announcement. Arguably what we learned about how the Trump team arrived at those tariff rates — the sheer malignant stupidity of the whole thing — was even worse.
You might be tempted to dismiss complaints about the policy process as elitist snobbery. But credibility is a crucial part of policymaking. Businesses can’t plan if they have no idea what to expect next. Foreign governments won’t make policies that help America if they don’t expect us to respond rationally.
So what do we know about how the Trumpists arrived at their tariff plan? Trump claimed that the tariff rates imposed on different countries reflected their policies, but James Surowiecki soon noted that the tariffs applied to each country appeared to be derived from a crude formula based on the U.S. trade deficit with that country. Trump officials denied this, while at the same time the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative released a note confirming Surowiecki’s guess.

One of the main arguments in my book is that the Red Scare is at the heart largely a culture war. It’s one that pits the progressive New Deal culture of the 1930s against a revanchist, certainly anti-New Deal, but also anti-progressive conservatism. In the 1930s, there was not just the New Deal, and not just the tumult of the Great Depression, but the emergence of a culture in America that was very different from what had come before, certainly what had existed in the 1920s. It was cosmopolitan, pluralistic, very, very much in favor of an expansive government—but also in favor of things like women’s rights and civil rights and labor rights.
