Hi all,

I just posted this in the F:IA and Fox forums as well...

For the last couple weeks I've been downloading all the episodes via WinMX in SVCD format (thanks to -=ZERO=- for helping me out).

Over the weekend I, in addition to sending out many postcards (see postcard tally thread), authored DVDs from the episodes.

I re-encoded the SVCD files and made them DVD compliant, plus added menus, etc. I am actually surprised how well they turned out! :) There are 3 DVDs with 4 episodes per disc.

I don't have any fancy labels or cool cases for them (unless someone wants to help me out with artwork), but if anyone is interested in a set let me know. Now that they're made I can reproduce them (maybe a couple sets per day) for pretty cheap.

They are on DVD-R discs, burned by a Pioneer A-04 DVD burner. I've played them on a few set top DVD players (Pioneer, Sony, Panasonic) and they work fine. I can't guarantee compatibility with your player though. Check your DVD player manual to see if it supports DVD-R media.

The problem, though, is that there are 3 discs, with 4 episodes per disc. So, the ones on that site would need to be modified a bit to work. Anyone want to try and contact the makers to see if they'd be interested in some mods?

i used tmpgenc to convert them from SVCD to DVD, then used Sonic DVDit! to author the discs.

Nope, it's not me. And they aren't my discs either. I haven't send any a California address yet.

As I've told everyone that's contacted me so far...I'm not trying to make money on these. I want to help promote the show and help in some small way to bring it back on the air.

I'm sure I could probably put my set up on ebay, and it could compete with the best that's out there. I have artwork now to really make a professional looking set (thanks to those who helped with the artwork!).

When I figured out my net profit on the 25 or so orders I've filled thus far, it came out to be a whopping $7.65 (mostly due to varying shipping costs) which is a whopping 30.6 cents per set. Ohhh I'm just RAKING it in!! ;-)

One suggestion:

Put the episodes in the proper order! The series flows much better in its intended form which, in turn, helps new viewers get hooked easier!

I assume your DVDs present the episodes in their proper order. I only mention it because I noticed that the eBayer's DVDs do not.

With the exception of the 2 hour pilot which is first on disc 1 (there are 3 total), the eps are in the order they were aired.

The dvd masters are made, and I don't have the time to make any revisions to them for a while.

Besides, since all eps are there, if you want to watch them in the "proper" order you can. All it takes is a few more button presses on the remote

They are 4:3.

But, keep in mind when Fox broadcast it was in widescreen. So, there are black bars at the top and bottom.

The video is exactly what you saw when it was broadcast.

I think that this is so cool. I have a question though, about how you downloaded them. Just got a cable modem and dl'd WinMX, but so far my search strings have yielded no results. What search did you use to find them?

Regarding Playstation2 compatibility:

Several people who have purchased these discs report that the very first time you insert
one of the discs it plays fine. After that none of the discs will play, whether they've been in the unit before or not. The discs in question played just fine for those customers in set
top DVD players and/or computer DVD-ROM drives.

If a PS2 is your only method for watching the discs, I wouldn't suggest you buy a set from me.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have made some sets of DVDs with full color labels, and either a standard CD jewel case with full color inserts or a standard DVD case (like store bought DVDs come in) with full color wraparound graphics. A big thank you to those that did the majority of the artwork!

Since the cost of printing all the full color stuff can add up quickly, I'm probably going to only make a few of these. Contact me if you're interested in a set: trs80@cornerpub.com

I just received my DVD's from you this afternoon. They are amazing! Everything was perfect! The pictures, the music, and most importantly the quality of the episodes was wonderful! I was just writing to tell anyone considering buying these Firefly DVD's that they look great. They were well worth the money. I got them 2 days after I ordered them. They'll definitely hold me over until FOX (hopefully) puts out an official Firefly DVD release. Thanks Lance.

I had to get me some Firefly and the DVDs were just what the Doctor ordered. The consideration and service I received were first-rate and the perceived attitude TRS80 displayed indicated a level of pride and care in the quality of the disks. I received the disks and immediately played them... I was knocked out!!! I was very pleased with the professional attention to detail and the artistic touch to the experience. I watched it on a 53" rear-projection TV... great picture and I was pleasently suprised that the surround sound encoding was flawlessly reproduced on my system!

I have purchased and received a set of DVDs from TRS80, and they arrived in good shape. The video is near broadcast quality, and they appear to be readable on all players that can view DVD-R.

I think that there is a problem with AOL. I also tried to e-mail TRS through my AOL account, he said he responded but I didn't get it. Then I used my Yahoo! mail. I got a response so quick its almost scary.

Just received DVD set from TRS80. Lance, you, sir, are a steely-eyed missile man!

Menus are well constructed, with a nice close-up of our lady S, and the end theme playing over them. Chapter breaks within the eps. Vid quality is pretty much broadcast quality. Audio is just a hair tinny at some points, but generally excellent. I don't have my surround set-up yet, but the stereo separation was groovy, and "virtual surround" processing on my player *did* have me checking my 4 and 8 o'clock from time to time (esp. during the battle of Serenity Valley). So I suspect that he pulled off the Dolby encoding like a pro (as others with better equipment have already said)!

I've only had time to watch sections of the Pilot, but early indications are that Lance has done a truly shiny job!!

Add to this the fact that shipping was blazing-fast, e-mail contact was exemplary and downright personable, and he's doing this for not a hair of profit (apart from inadvertent variations in shipping costs [a small amount, which he himself reported on this board]), and I can enthusiastically and unreservedly recommend doing biz with this fellow! This will handily tide me over till the official DVD(s) come(s) out.

Lance, I just want to say you have made me very happy by producing these DVD's and making them so easy to obtain. The quality is the best I have seen. I have DL'd all of them and none are anywhere near these. If anyone is on the fence about paying for these get off, as I am impressed. Thankyou Lance you are a good man.

Thank you very much for the excellent dvds! I've missed the show so much on Friday nights. It's great to be able to watch them at will now. Even hearing the main theme again healed the sadness in my heart.

I thought the design quality (packaging, menus...) were great. I'm suggesting the set to friends who miss the series.

Just a minor update for anyone it applies to.

These DVD's *DO* work in PS2's(at least mine), but not reliably. Just pop it in a few times and wait till it tells you it doesnt' work or it starts working. Seems to work maybe 1/5-10 times(after it starts, it won't have any issues till you take it out)

Thanks Tabitha! 5 days is really fast!!

I'm currently working with a couple people who are having problems with the discs on their players (couple set tops and 1 computer).

So far, in all cases a replacement set of (different brand) media fixes the problem. I am using a couple different brands and burning using 2 different burners so it's not surprising. The majority of the sets are being burned to Ritek 4X brand DVD-Rs so it's not like I'm using crappy media! When a replacement set is needed, I'm sending either TDK 2X, or Imation 1X, or Memorex 1X media. TDK seems to solve it for most.

I hope everyone that I'm working with is satisfied with my responsiveness to their issues. I've only given 1 refund thus far, and replacement sets are sent out free.

The trend seems to be:

Players older than 2 1/2 or 3 years (set top and computer) will most likely have a problem no matter what media I send.

Toshiba players of any age seem to be the most fussy. TDK seems to work best with them.

PS2s are hit and miss as SlowSmurf points out.

Apex models lower than 1600 (1500, 1200, etc), don't seem to work no matter what I send. This is surprising to me because Apex are supposed to be the "swiss army knife" of players.

That's it for now. I still have a few color sets, and some plain sets available (more plain than color).

The artwork on the cartons and on the Disc's is 1st rate, really impressive.The full color set is really worth the few extra bucks, trust me. I popped in "The Train Job" and viewed it on a 60" Mitsubishi TV, The picture quality is great, the sound is great! The Disc's even have interactive menu's and you have all the slow motion functions, you can also scan thru the chapters at will. All in all, everything a FireFly fan could hope for. Lance, you did a wonderful job with this set. I wanted to post this here because AOL does not seem to let your emails post thru to me. Also thanks again for the quick service, just 6 day from the time I dropped the check in the mail.

Mine arrived yesterday and I immediately popped mine in the DVD player... the player is the Sony 300 which is like a juke box in that it holds 300 DVD/CD's. Picked on The Train Job and it started right up and looked beautiful. I was immensly impressed. My only problem was I didn't have time to watch the whole thing! I ran out of time and have to wait until Wednesday to start watching the rest.

Thanks for doing this I am really enjoying these DVD's.

Part message, part bump.

These disks are shiny in the extreme, and should be standard fare for disgruntled fans (which is, basically, all of us!!) everywhere. They are of high quality, TRS80 is a joy to deal with, and they are cheap enough (he's not making a profit) that multiple sets would make for good loaners to spread the Word.

I have now had a chance to watch all the discs all the way thru. I want my Firefly back... waaahhhh. They make me miss it so much, but thank you TRS80 for doing this. Hopefully the last three episodes will be aired.

I've enjoyed the discs and they were well worth the money. Thanks again for all you did.

Got the DVDs about a week ago, and have been doing a thorough op check. (Watching each episode in turn) Its great. The video quality is fine, and considering these were recorded off broadcast, impressive. trs80 did a great job, and well worth the money.

In case Joss, Tim or any of the folks from ME are reading this, I swear by Mal's pretty floral bonnet, I will buy the offical DVDs when they come out. Please hurry with them. :)

Just wanted to give this thread a bump (even if it is still near the top of the list anyways) and say that I'm waiting patiently (in other words I'm going out of my mind) for my set. Can't wait to check it out after reading all the positive word on it. Grr, I miss this show.
