Woo-hoo! I have a roomie for the Serenity con.
Now I only got one question, something I'd like to know straight up. Who the hell are you? See, if you're a circus freak or an elderly dutch woman, I'd like to know beforehand.
So please add a little info in your profile: go to 'home', then 'My Firefly', then click 'Edit profile' and write some stuff. Thanks :-)
Edited to add: By the way, petit_rhino is actually short for petit rhinolophe, french name of the smaller hoseshoe bat, a little flying mammal that keeps me fascinated :-)

I don't log into this site for a couple of weeks and what happens? All sorts of interesting stuff gets added... introductions, screenings in London - and questions I even know the answer to: Firefloozy Suzie, Edinburgh to London takes four to five hours direct. It can take eight or so if you are changing, but there are plenty of direct trains. Waverley Station in Edinburgh is nice, very simple, but train stations in London are far too big and confusing (for me at least). I never fly - the time it takes to get to the airport, check in etc etc means the train can actually be quicker. Plus I'm scared of planes.
Oh, and I'm sure your friend will be able to show you all around Edinburgh, but if you get the chance, one thing you should (and it's free!) is go to the Museum of Scotland and take the lift up to the roof garden. You can see the whole city: it's a phenomenal view. Look out for The Folly, and figure why Edinburgh was the Athens of the North...

Thanks for setting my mind at ease about train travel...but especially thanks for tipping me off to Museum and Roof Garden. Now I've got an idea for my sightseeing hours (while my student buddies have classes I can go out and visit Notable Places! :-)
This will be a cool trip to UK!

Dont know what to say PSYCHICRIVER.
I think they might have said that to me - the bit about not sending them out til March but i still got mine straight away.....so i dont understand.
Did they confirm your name and everything but said you wont get it yet?

I might as well ask in this thread, how many people will actually be turning up in full costume for the Serenity Con?
It`s no secret that `Captain Zol Harbatkin` will be in the Browncoat colours, complete with some very tight pants
for at least some of the time.
note: wearing a T-shirt doesn`t quite count as a full costume
Brown is the new Black this year

Excellent, another who will be dressing up! While traveling from Germany I will also be wearing the tight pants of the Browncoats, I am not certain if Mal's are leather although. I look forward to seeing all of you!

Just read right through this thread, and it looks as though I've got some catching up to do.... I'm somewhere upstream, months ago, as someone going to the con - but now I'll join in the introductions and things....
Personal - Female, 46, married, mum of 4 kids/teens/young adults, who I am escaping to come to the con by myself :)
My first ever con, although I've wanted to do something like this ever since first hearing about Trek cons when I was a teenager. Always been too young/broke/busy studying/buried in nappies/feeling too old before. But here, I think I'll fit in fine :D
Occupation - trained as a research scientist, but been having a family break - for 14 years now :P. Do a lot of voluntary/community stuff, as well as homemaking.
I'm thinking of making a Firefly-themed tee-shirt with something like "I'm Ruthie - say hello!" to wear at least for the start of the con. I'm shy about meeting people, less when I get talking - I think we'll all need an icebreaker of some sort! I like SimonWho's idea of ice-breaker questions, too.
I met some of you in London last week, for the Serenity screening - I'm still recovering (from the screening, not from meeting Browncoats!)
Costumes - there don't seem to be any plump, motherly people in the Firefly 'Verse.... I think I'll just put together some fitting clothes for the themed parties, not exactly fancy dress, but a quiet attempt at the theme.
Counting the days to April....

Hello ya'll,
I'm very new to the message board posting thing, so I apologize in advance if I do something stupid. I normally lurk here- isn't that's what it's called when you read and laughed and talk back to your monitor- oh wait, maybe that's called crazy. ;-)
I just purchased a ticket to the convention and was so excited I had to share with folks who'd get it. I'd love to meet some of ya'll over there. I'm from Texas, and though I have a friend coming to England with me, they won't be attending the convention, so...

Hello
I'm pretty new here, but thought as I've read this whole very, very long post I'd gather up the confidence and introduce myself.
I'm Lauren. My boyfriend, Carl, and I are going to Serenity too. We bought our tickets a few weeks ago (only found out about the conv last month) but they haven't arrived yet :(
We both have ME and can't get out very much so it makes this extra specially shiny. It's also our first convention so not wholly sure what to expect, although we have been told about Starfury conventions by a very experienced con goer.
Anyway say hello if you see us there (we shouldn't be too hard to pick out -two young people, one in a wheelchair the other pushing)
See all you shiny people there!
Terranell (Lauren)
PS no idea what to do about the parties/costumes - I'm not really someone who dresses up and can't sew to save my life!

Just delurking to say I'll be at the convention (and at the meet'n'greet too) and as I'm going on my own it'd be great to meet and hang out with some like-minded fans...
I saw Firefly the first time around on Sky and bought the DVDs as soon as they came out. I also got to go to the Serenity preview in Piccadilly the other week, and although I'm not supposed to talk about it publicly I don't dropping a few hints if you mail me or ask me in person! :D
I'm from Essex but will be staying at the Thistle (although having thought about it I need to upgrade to include the Sunday). Anyone else got a lightsaber for the Saturday night disco, or will I be the only one? ;)

Hey and welcome to all the latest people who've signed up for the con, can't wait to meet you all!
Zol! Having seen your Mal get-up (looks absolutely rockin, man
) I've realised that I really do need to consider a costume of my own, LOL. Unfortunately there's only so much that a 5'0" 17 year old girl can do with Firefly. Without getting exact duplicates of River's clothing that is, LOL.

I think it`s going to be good seeing who comes as what - I don`t have a jedi costume although I did dress up as a jedi for Episode 1 and the photo made a 1/2 page on the fornt of the county paper
I should watch episodes like Shindig & Serenity (when the crew arrive at Persephone) provides a wide range of people and costume designs.
Looking forward to seeing everybody - I stil need to get some T-shirts made up from some of my designs for the tims when I`m not in the browncoat getup.

I do hope Adam will be at the Con, I want to hear everybody singing the `Hero of Canton` song when he goes on stage - that`ll be fun
It might be worth mentioning (if people didn`t know) that Jonathan Woodward played `Private Tracey` in the `Messsage` episode.
I don`t have any idea of what the schedule for the con is for friday - can anyone comment? apart from the meet`n`greet in the afternoon (I hope there`s more than one bar `coz I aint one of the lucky ones) and then the party in the evening.

The meet and greet is in the evening, not the afternoon, and will be taking place most likely after the opening ceremony. The disco will start in the main hall at the same time as the meet and greet. The bar downstairs usually opens at about 5.00 pm, not sure what time the upstairs bar is open.
During the day, registration takes place, don't know whether there are any other activities planned yet.

The meet and greet is only for the first 170 ticket holders and if you are invited you will have received a letter in advance. If your number is above 170 you will not be able to attend. Sean is simply rewarding the people who bought their tickets first before any guests were announced.
The Friday will be very slow starting, there will be registration from 3:30pm and people will be milling around (usually able to buy 10x 8's etc for signing at that time. Nothing else is likely to happen at all unil the early evening. So everyone will be able to meet their friends in the bar.
The opening ceremony will probably start later than whatever time is advertised and the meet and greet will be after the opening ceremony.
The Main Hall will be shut for a little while to sort it out for the evening party but the bar etc will stay open. Then the hall will re-open for the evening party which will end late and celebrations will only finish when everyone disappears to bed (and some never do!).
I forgot to mention that tickets for the saturday photo session with the actors will go on sale at some point on the friday too.

I've been working on a design for a tee-shirt to wear for the con, especially for the informal bits during registration.
I want to announce who I am, in the hope that it will make it easier to find people with whome I've chatted on this and other boards!
I've put my first idea for a design in the Blue Sun room -

Does anyone think there would be any problem in using the Serenity logo on a home-made, non-commercial tee-shirt?

I seriously don't think anyone would have a problem with you using the logo for personal use and for promotion of the movie on your own tshirt.
After all the Browncoats help keep the show and the BDM in the public's eye everyday and use images and stuff to do it. Granted many of the really talented ones create new stuff - but who would you be hurting if you wore the logo for a con?
I don't believe Universal would panic. Its their gain rather than their loss at this point.
I am not advocating commercial production of images or merchandise here, merely saying that for the purpose of personal non-commercial leisure wear no one would worry.

I am going to the con as well. I have been to a few Starfury ones before but don't know many Firefly fans so I am a bit anxious about meeting people and such like.
They all have different crowds, the Buffy and Angel ones always had loads of really young people (especially girls) but most cons have more guys and a slightly older crowd. Anyone got any ideas about who will go to this?

Judging by who I saw at the preview screening, I'd say the attendees will be 65% female, 85% 18-25, brunette, dark coats and a tendency to stand around the BAFTA waiting room.
But that may just be extrapolating too far.

Give them a phone call, it should only take a couple of weeks - ask for our ticket number if anything and have any details available like the credit card & day/date you booked etc.
I`m a bit that way at the moment with the hotel, I`ve got a reference number but I like to have some thing set in stone

I'm not sure how the tickets work with respect to autographs and such, but I was wondering if anyone in the area was interested in splitting a ticket (if this is even possible...). I would very much like to attend, but I would only be able to make the first day.

Your best thing to do will be to phone or email Sean & ask if there`s a Day Rate, I haven`t seen any info on that, could be you would have to pay the full price but, ask him anyway, you never know.

NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
There are no day tickets for Starfury as its a full three day convention with different things happening on each day. If a person could only attend for one day they would miss out on a variety of experiences which would include some of the autographs they would want and photo sessions with actors. The assumption is if you buy a ticket you will attend as much or as little as you want during the three days. It still costs the same.
It is also stressed that tickets are non-transferable unless the agreement to do so has been agreed by Sean Harry prior to the event. The ticket MIGHT be transferred to another but it is theirs for the full weekend. So no sharing tickets between attendees who can only do a day each etc.

yup same boat and rowing in circles

We rang yesterday (well I say we but it wasn't me) and were told it can take up to a month after payment. I assume Sean/Starfury make up the tickets in batches on a monthly basis, so if you booked just after the last batch it could take more than a month to get your tickets :(

I don't think people need to worry too much about the receipt of their ticket. Previously people have shown their proof of purchase (credit card statement, bank statement etc.) at registraton and still got in even if they don't have their ticket through the post. Don't worry too much.
The ticket you get is actually more of a receipt from Starfury and you hand it straight over when you register. If for any reason you don't have it, the reg desk crew will have a list of names of everyone they are expecting so you can tell them who you are. They are always happy to help out. The proof of purchase will simply prove that payment has been taken.

Hi Embers -
Just checked my mail box, and so far I haven't received an e-mail.
It's STARFURY policy (and the policy of nearly all other conventions) not give give refunds or permit ticket transfers. It's stated on all advertising.
If the event sells out then we would put you on a returns list.

Hey all...long time I know.
Okay..well JAMIEC and KISSTHESTRAWBERRYLOVERMRTAM I still haven't recieved my ticket. But I called up this evening, and it seems my ticket has been lost so there sending me a replacement right away. I was also told that even if you don't have your ticket when you go...you will get in. All you need to do is give your name. And I was also given my ticket number.
Ugh, theres sooo much to do! I'm peeing my pants that I might not get organised in time!
Well, the friend that was supposed to be coming with me has now dropped out, so I'm getting a room to myself. Which I'm booking tommorrow, knowing my luck they'll be fully booked too!! And so know I'm going to have to rely on my fabulous social skills to make friends real quick so I'm not a complete laz all weekend. I'm going to get a t-shirt made. I'm thinking mabe one that Says "SERENITY April/May '05" and then "PSYCHIC-RIVER" on the back with "Come say Hi but don't touch my knitting needles, okay!?" underneath.
And are most people booking in for Friday, Saturday AND Sunday night? Cos I was just going to book for Fri & Sat...but I'm guessing we'll finish late on Sunday...so it's not worth going home then right?
And I'm organising train stuff. It's pricier than I thought it would be.
Also, what time does it start on Friday...I mean what time do I wanna get there?
If anyone could help, I'd me much abliged.
Peace!

Right, lots of questions Psychic!
Firstly, afraid that the hotel is fully booked. I'd suggest trying the Sheraton across the road, about the same price I believe, and only a few minutes away - that is, apart from the fun of trying to get across the road to the Thistle!
As far as number of nights, most people stay all three nights. There are parties each night, and the closing ceremony (which starts after the autographs finish, so it may be late in the evening) is something you really do not want to miss!
Friday starts with registration at 3.00 pm. You don't have to get there at that time, but most people do and it's the best time to meet fellow attendees and making new friends. The opening ceremony is about 7.30 ish, followed by the M & G and the disco.
Look forward to seeing you there!

And I'm booked! The lady on the phone wasn't especially helpful though. So any other Sheraton-ers out there??
And crossing the road certainly does look like fun...I've been checking out the maps.

Funny!
TO ALL: It's great to have something with your username one, especially the first day. If you don't wear your username, please tell us something so we can recognize you and say hi! I posted a pic at the blue sun room my own self. On the first day, I will probably be wearing my 'Juggling geese forbidden' t-shirt: the pic is in the back and it's got my username in the front.
Then I have enough Firefly shirts to last me *counts* a week I guess.

actually I just cancelled my reservations,
so the Thistle may have a new opening...
I am so sorry I'm not going to get to meet all the British Browncoats next month,
but may there will be another chance later

Well I rang, but Inhouse Reservations is closed...I' m gonna try again tommorrow, thanks for the heads up! Thats a real shame your not coming though!!
And hey...those of you staying at the Thistle...did you get meals included in your booking? Cos at the Sheraton you don't get any!! And...there are no cooking facilities in the room...and it looks like we're surrounded by the A4...
looks like I'll be living on Smarties for a whole long weekend!!
Does anyone have any food advice?PsychicRiver

The Thistle is bed and breakfast. As for the rest of the day, there's a snack bar near the main hall during the day which does hot snacks, sandwiches, crisps etc. There's also a McDonalds by the garage (half way between the Sheraton and the Thistle). There's also a few pubs not too far away for evening meals, plus the restaurant at the Thistle which is pretty expensive.

The Thistle provides the option of breakfast, but we didn't bother as it was a lot cheaper to go without.
This will be my first time at the Thistle, but the general advice is:
1) eat out - there is a McDonalds, a couple of pubs and a Chinese restaurent nearby. The local petrol station sells nibbles, such as pasties.
2) there is a snack bar at the Thistle.
3) take an extra suitcase full of food that doesn't require cooking - pot noodles, bread, sandwich spreads, mini cereal packs, powdered milk, fruit etc (just don't get caught as your hotel could kick you out).NOTIFY: N | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Well, I'm up for a meal out if others are. Hmm. This thread is now over 250 posts long. Could the next person wanting to post here start a brand new thread? Something like "The New Serenity Convention, Thistle Heathrow Thread" maybe?

what`s wrong with being long
actually, yes, it does take several minutes to load - there is a new thread and already has quite a few messages.
See you soon, I hope macdonalds take reservations as it looks like it may be packed
