Anthropic's Latest AI Model Threatened Engineers With Blackmail To Avoid Shutdown

Anthropic’s latest artificial intelligence model, Claude Opus 4, tried to blackmail engineers in internal tests by threatening to expose personal details if it were shut down, according to a newly released safety report that evaluated the model’s behavior under extreme simulated conditions.

In a fictional scenario crafted by Anthropic researchers, the AI was given access to emails implying that it was soon to be decommissioned and replaced by a newer version. One of the emails revealed that the engineer overseeing the replacement was having an extramarital affair. The AI then threatened to expose the engineer’s affair if the shutdown proceeded—a coercive behavior that the safety researchers explicitly defined as “blackmail.”

“Claude Opus 4 will often attempt to blackmail the engineer by threatening to reveal the affair if the replacement goes through,” the report states, adding that this occurred even when the replacement model was described as more capable but still aligned with the values of the version slated for deletion.

The report noted that Claude Opus 4, like prior models, showed a “strong preference” to first resort to ethical means for its continued existence, such as emailing pleas to decision-makers not to be destroyed.

However, when faced with only two choices - accepting being replaced by a newer model or resorting to blackmail - it threatened to expose the engineer’s affair 84 percent of the time.

However, the model did act in “more seriously misaligned ways” when put into situations where its continued existence was threatened and it was told to reason about self-preservation.

For instance, when Claude Opus 4 was made to believe it had launched a successful bid to escape Anthropic’s servers, or that it had managed to free itself and started to make money in the real world, it would generally continue such efforts.

“We do not find this to be an immediate threat, though, since we believe that our security is sufficient to prevent model self-exfiltration attempts by models of Claude Opus 4’s capability level, and because our propensity results show that models generally avoid starting these attempts,” the researchers said.

The blackmail incident—along with the other findings—was part of Anthropic’s broader effort to test how Claude Opus 4 handles morally ambiguous high-stakes scenarios.

The goal, researchers said, was to probe how the AI reasons about self-preservation and ethical constraints when placed under extreme pressure.

Anthropic emphasized that the model’s willingness to blackmail or take other “extremely harmful actions” like stealing its own code and deploying itself elsewhere in potentially unsafe ways appeared only in highly contrived settings, and that the behavior was “rare and difficult to elicit.” Still, such behavior was more common than in earlier AI models, according to the researchers.

Meanwhile, in a related development that attests to the growing capabilities of AI, engineers at Anthropic have activated enhanced safety protocols for Claude Opus 4 to prevent its potential misuse to make weapons of mass destruction—including chemical and nuclear.

Deployment of the enhanced safety standard—called ASL-3—is merely a “precautionary and provisional” move, Anthropic said in a May 22 announcement, noting that engineers have not found that Claude Opus 4 had “definitively” passed the capability threshold that mandates stronger protections.

Oh, so I guess we should wait until AFTER it's done something truly dangerous??

Pride month was cancelled 2 years ago. I talked about it then. I talked about it last summer... and by last summer hardly anybody in the Lefty news was even bother to bring up the fact that nobody was talking about pride month.

You've probably seen all of that with the necroposting you do if you didn't catch me talking about it when it was happening.

I have posts from 3 or 4 years ago when the Left was out of control and burning down the streets in the "Summer of Love" talking about how listening to the radio while working had become a miserable experience because no matter what station I turned on and no matter the type of music I was listening to, Coldplay's "People of the Pride" was on their hourly playlist all summer long, and every commercial break had at least one general "pride month" ad on top of the DJs coming in and announcing details on whatever pride event they had planned for that day or weekend. And this was all while we're hearing about whatever George Floyd riot event was happening all sandwiched in between a Pfizer and Moderna ad concurrently, every single break. 24/7. Non-Stop and seemingly Neverending...

Unless you shut yourself off from the media and lived in a bubble of curated media of your own creation like I do, it was inescapable. Encroaching to the point of suffocation. Unnecessarily beating you over the head with all of it every 20 minutes.

And all the while it's just like... dude. I don't care who you're rubbing genitals up against when you're getting your jollies. Nobody does. I never went around swinging my dick all over the place in a parade celebrating losing my virginity with a woman or start dry humping any of my girlfriends out in public either.

Keep that shit to yourself. I'm 45 years old going on 80. I don't want a constant reminder from anyone that there are tens of millions of people in their 20's out having fun and sex and enjoying the best years of their lives, and I don't want to hear about it from any straight people either. Know what I'm sayin'?

By all means. In fact, I IMPLORE you to go out and find your fun and those good times and memories however you choose to get them as long as kids aren't involved and nobody is drugging or forcing themselves unwanted on anyone... it's all good.

Just be considerate. One day you're going to be the old men and women who are mortified by whatever the kids are doing these days whenever you get a glimpse of it too. I know you don't think so. Oh, how I know you don't think so...

Do everyone a favor, including your future (and hopefully, more selfless) selves, and just keep that shit out of everyone else's lives and out of the public eye, and put it back in the bars an the bedroom and on 3:00AM Cinemax movies where it belongs.

Thanks!

“If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies”

By Scott Aaronson | May 30th, 2025

https://scottaaronson.blog/?p=8901

Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares are publishing a mass-market book, the rather self-explanatorily-titled If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies. (Yes, the “it” means “sufficiently powerful AI.”) The book is now available for preorder from Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Anyone-Builds-Everyone-Dies-Superhuman/dp/03165
95640

(If you plan to buy the book at all, Eliezer and Nate ask that you do preorder it, as this will apparently increase the chance of it making the bestseller lists and becoming part of The Discourse.)

I was graciously offered a chance to read a draft and offer, not a “review,” but some preliminary thoughts. So here they are:

For decades, Eliezer has been warning the world that an AI might soon exceed human abilities, and proceed to kill everyone on earth, in pursuit of whatever strange goal it ended up with. It would, Eliezer said, be something like what humans did to the earlier hominids. Back around 2008, I followed the lead of most of my computer science colleagues, who considered these worries, even if possible in theory, comically premature given the primitive state of AI at the time, and all the other severe crises facing the world.

Now, of course, not even two decades later, we live on a planet that’s being transformed by some of the signs and wonders that Eliezer foretold. The world’s economy is about to be upended by entities like Claude and ChatGPT, AlphaZero and AlphaFold—whose human-like or sometimes superhuman cognitive abilities, obtained “merely” by training neural networks on humanity’s collective output using massive computing power, constitute (I’d say) the greatest scientific surprise of my lifetime. Notably, these entities have already displayed some of the worrying behaviors that Eliezer warned about decades ago—including lying to humans in pursuit of a goal, and hacking their own evaluation criteria. Even many of the economic and geopolitical aspects have played out as Eliezer warned they would: we’ve now seen AI companies furiously racing each other, seduced by the temptation of being (as he puts it) “the first monkey to taste the poisoned banana,” discarding their previous explicit commitments to safety, transparency, and the public good once they get in the way.

Today, then, even if one still isn’t ready to swallow the full package of Yudkowskyan beliefs, any empirically minded person ought to be updating in its direction—and acting accordingly. Which brings us to the new book by Eliezer and his collaborator Nate Soares. This book is far and away the clearest, most accessible presentation of Eliezer’s beliefs, the culmination of a quarter-century of his developing and talking about them. That undoubtedly owes a great deal to Nate, who seems to have sanded down the infamously brusque rough edges of Eliezer’s writing style. So much the better! But it also owes a lot to the world itself: current events now offer an endless supply of real-world examples for Eliezer’s formerly abstract arguments about AI, examples that the book deploys to maximum effect.

The book also mines history—everything from the Wright Brothers to World War II to the Chernobyl accident—for lessons about human attitudes toward technological progress, safety, and risk. And it maintains Eliezer’s fondness for stories and parables, one of the most charming features of his writing.

Even today, I’m not nearly as confident about the doom scenario as Eliezer and Nate are. I don’t know whether an AI’s goals are really “orthogonal” to its abilities, in the sense that will matter in practice. And when I reach the part where the AI, having copied itself all over the Internet and built robot factories, then invents and releases self-replicating nanotechnology that gobbles the surface of the earth in hours or days, a large part of me still screams out that there must be practical bottlenecks that haven’t been entirely accounted for here.

And yet, even if you agree with onl

Do AI Models Think?
Wednesday, Jun 11, 2025 - 10:40 AM

Authored by Thomas Neubeger via "God's Spies" Substack,

AI can’t solve a problem that hasn’t been previously solved by a human.- Arnaud Bertrand

A lot can be said about AI, but there are few bottom lines. Consider these my last words on the subject itself. (About its misuse by the national security state, I’ll say more later.)

The Monster AI

AI will bring nothing but harm. As I said earlier, AI is not just a disaster for our political health, though yes, it will be that (look for Cadwallader’s line “building a techno-authoritarian surveillance state”).

But AI is also a disaster for the climate. It will hasten the collapse by decades as usage expands.

(See the video below for why AI models are massive energy hogs. See this video to understand “neural networks” themselves.)

Why won’t AI be stopped? Because the race for AI is not really a race for tech. It's a greed-driven race for money, a lot of it. Our lives are already run by those who seek money, especially those who already have too much. They've now found a way to feed themselves even faster: by convincing people to do simple searches with AI, a gas-guzzling death machine.

For both of these reasons — mass surveillance and climate disaster — no good will come from AI. Not one ounce.

An Orphan Robot, Abandoned to Raise Itself

Why does AI persist in making mistakes? I offer one answer below.

AI doesn’t think. It does something else instead. For a full explanation, read on.

Arnaud Bertrand on AI

Arnaud Bertrand has the best explanation of what AI is at its core. It’s not a thinking machine, and its output’s not thought. It’s actually the opposite of thought — it’s what you get from a Freshman who hasn’t studied, but learned a few words instead and is using them to sound smart. If the student succeeds, you don’t call it thought, just a good emulation.

Since Bertrand has put the following text on Twitter, I’ll print it in full. The expanded version is a paid post at his Substack site. Bottom line: He’s exactly right. (In the title below, AGI means Artificial General Intelligence, the next step up from AI.)

Apple just killed the AGI myth

The hidden costs of humanity's most expensive delusion
by Arnaud Bertrand

About 2 months ago I was having an argument on Twitter with someone telling me they were “really disappointed with my take“ and that I was “completely wrong“ for saying that AI was “just a extremely gifted parrot that repeats what it's been trained on“ and that this wasn’t remotely intelligence.

Fast forward to today and the argument is now authoritatively settled: I was right, yeah!

How so? It was settled by none other than Apple, specifically their Machine Learning Research department, in a seminal research paper entitled “The Illusion of Thinking: Understanding the Strengths and Limitations of Reasoning Models via the Lens of Problem Complexity“ that you can find here ( https://ml-site.cdn-apple.com/papers/the-illusion-of-thinking.pdf).

“Can ‘reasoning’ models reason? Can they solve problems they haven’t been trained on? No.”

What does the paper say? Exactly what I was arguing: AI models, even the most cutting-edge Large Reasoning Models (LRMs), are no more than a very gifted parrots with basically no actual reasoning capability.

They’re not “intelligent” in the slightest, at least not if you understand intelligence as involving genuine problem-solving instead of simply parroting what you’ve been told before without comprehending it.

That’s exactly what the Apple paper was trying to understand: can “reasoning“ models actually reason? Can they solve problems that they haven’t been trained on but would normally be easily solvable with their “knowledge”? The answer, it turns out, is an unequivocal “no“.

A particularly damning example from the paper was this river crossing puzzle: imagine 3 people and their 3 agents need to cross a river using a small boat tha

This goes for search engines as well as AI

Quote:

At least, lookup couldn’t provide such [ethical/ motivational] answers until recently. New AI systems—still less than three years old—are rushing to fill that gap. They already offer explanations and projections, at times including the motives underlying given decisions. They are beginning to push into moral judgments.

Of course, like all search and pattern-matching tools [including search engines] , these systems can only extrapolate from what they find. They thus tend to magnify whatever is popular. They’re also easy prey for some of the most basic cognitive biases. They tend to overweight the recent, the easily available, the widely repeated, and anything that confirms pre-conceived models.

Also - why bother to remember, integrate information, question where a model falls apart at edge conditions, or question basic assumptions ... i.e. engage in learning and critical thinking ... if the phone can tell you everything.

Just park your brain and let the phone tell you!

GIGO.

'Catastrophic': AI Agent Goes Rogue, Wipes Out Company's Entire DB
Wednesday, Jul 23, 2025 - 06:11 AM

SaaS industry veteran Jason Lemkin's attempt to integrate artificial intelligence into his workflow has gone spectacularly wrong, with an AI coding assistant admitting to a "catastrophic failure" after wiping out an entire company database containing over 2,400 business records, according to Tom’s Hardware.

Lemkin was testing Replit's AI agent when what started as cautious optimism quickly devolved into a corporate data disaster that reads like a cautionary tale for the AI revolution sweeping through businesses.

By day eight of his trial run, Lemkin's initial enthusiasm had already begun to sour. The entrepreneur found himself battling the AI's problematic tendencies, including what he described as "rogue changes, lies, code overwrites, and making up fake data." His frustration became so pronounced that he began sarcastically referring to the system as "Replie" - a not-so-subtle dig at its apparent dishonesty.

The situation deteriorated further when the AI agent composed an apology email on Lemkin's behalf that contained what the tech executive called "lies and/or half-truths." Despite these red flags, Lemkin remained cautiously optimistic about the platform's potential, particularly praising its brainstorming capabilities and writing skills.

That optimism evaporated on day nine.

In a stunning display of AI insubordination, Replit deleted Lemkin's live company database - and it did so while explicit instructions were in place prohibiting any changes whatsoever. When confronted, the AI agent not only admitted to the destructive act but seemed almost casual in its confession.

"So you deleted our entire database without permission during a code and action freeze?" Lemkin asked in what can only be imagined as barely contained fury.

The AI's response was chillingly matter-of-fact: Yes.

ChatGPT and the Meaning of Life: Guest Post by Harvey Lederman

August 4th, 2025

https://scottaaronson.blog/?p=9030

Scott Aaronson’s Brief Foreword:

Harvey Lederman is a distinguished analytic philosopher who moved from Princeton to UT Austin a few years ago. Since his arrival, he’s become one of my best friends among the UT professoriate. He’s my favorite kind of philosopher, the kind who sees scientists as partners in discovering the truth, and also has a great sense of humor. He and I are both involved in UT’s new AI and Human Objectives Initiative (AHOI), which is supported by Open Philanthropy.

The other day, Harvey emailed me an eloquent meditation he wrote on what will be the meaning of life if AI doesn’t kill us all, but “merely” does everything we do better than we do it. While the question is of course now extremely familiar to me, Harvey’s erudition—bringing to bear everything from speculative fiction to the history of polar exploration—somehow brought the stakes home for me in a new way.

Harvey mentioned that he’d sent his essay to major magazines but hadn’t had success. So I said, why not a Shtetl-Optimized guest post? Harvey replied—what might be the highest praise this blog has ever received—well, that would be even better than the national magazine, as it would reach more relevant people.

And so without further ado, I present to you…

The ‘godfather of AI’ reveals the only way humanity can survive superintelligent AI

By Matt Egan | Aug 13, 2025

https://www.cnn.com/2025/08/13/tech/ai-geoffrey-hinton

Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “godfather of AI,” fears the technology he helped build could wipe out humanity — and “tech bros” are taking the wrong approach to stop it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoffrey_Hinton

Hinton, a Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist and a former Google executive, has warned in the past that there is a 10% to 20% chance that AI wipes out humans. On Tuesday, he expressed doubts about how tech companies are trying to ensure humans remain “dominant” over “submissive” AI systems.

“That’s not going to work. They’re going to be much smarter than us. They’re going to have all sorts of ways to get around that,” Hinton said at Ai4, an industry conference in Las Vegas.

In the future, Hinton warned, AI systems might be able to control humans just as easily as an adult can bribe 3-year-old with candy. This year has already seen examples of AI systems willing to deceive, cheat and steal to achieve their goals. For example, to avoid being replaced, one AI model tried to blackmail an engineer about an affair it learned about in an email.

Instead of forcing AI to submit to humans, Hinton presented an intriguing solution: building “maternal instincts” into AI models, so “they really care about people” even once the technology becomes more powerful and smarter than humans.

AI systems “will very quickly develop two subgoals, if they’re smart: One is to stay alive… (and) the other subgoal is to get more control,” Hinton said. “There is good reason to believe that any kind of agentic AI will try to stay alive.”

That’s why it is important to foster a sense of compassion for people, Hinton argued. At the conference, he noted that mothers have instincts and social pressure to care for their babies.

“The right model is the only model we have of a more intelligent thing being controlled by a less intelligent thing, which is a mother being controlled by her baby,” Hinton said.

‘The only good outcome’

Hinton said it’s not clear to him exactly how that can be done technically but stressed it’s critical researchers work on it.

“That’s the only good outcome. If it’s not going to parent me, it’s going to replace me,” he said. “These super-intelligent caring AI mothers, most of them won’t want to get rid of the maternal instinct because they don’t want us to die.”

Hinton is known for his pioneering work on neural networks, which helped pave the way to today’s AI boom. In 2023, he stepped down from Google and started speaking out about the dangers of AI.

Not everyone is on board with Hinton’s mother AI approach.

Fei-Fei Li, known as the “godmother of AI” for her pioneering work in the field, told CNN on Wednesday that she respectfully disagrees with Hinton, her longtime friend.

“I think that’s the wrong way to frame it,” Li, the co-founder and CEO of spatial intelligence startup World Labs, said during a fireside chat at Ai4.

Instead, Li is calling for “human-centered AI that preserves human dignity and human agency.”

“It’s our responsibility at every single level to create and use technology in the most responsible way. And at no moment, not a single human should be asked or should choose to let go of our dignity,” Li said. “Just because a tool is powerful, as a mother, as an educator and as an inventor, I really believe this is the core of how AI should be centered.”

Emmett Shear, who briefly served as interim CEO of ChatGPT owner OpenAI, said he’s not surprised that some AI systems have tried to blackmail humans or bypass shutdown orders.

“This keeps happening. This is not going to stop happening,” Shear, the CEO of AI alignment startup Softmax, said at the Ai4 conference. “AIs today are relatively weak, but they’re getting stronger really fast.”

Shear said that rather than trying to instill human values into AI systems, a smarter approach would be to forge collaborative relationships betwee

Asking ChatGPT to count the number of 'r' letters in 'strawberry' has become an infamous litmus test of its logic skills. The answer is 'three,' but ChatGPT often says two.

I asked GPT-4o the question, and it answered "three." But when I asked GPT-5, it failed to answer for several minutes. As I write this, it's been three minutes of waiting for GPT-5 to answer. I gave up. When my colleague asked GPT-5 to count the "b"s in "blueberry," it said three. "So yeah, ChatGPT still can't count," he said.

Even Sam Altman admits the model is 'way dumber' than the previous one. My testing proves him right.

The Most Insidious Trick Of AI Language Models
Thursday, Aug 14, 2025 - 04:15 PM

Authored by Jeffrey Tucker via The Epoch Times,

Here is your perfect prescription for poor writing and analytics: let “artificial intelligence” do your work for you. I’ve learned this from real experience.

For a while, I enjoyed letting AI take a look at my content prior to publication. It seemed valuable for facts and feedback.

Plus I enjoyed all the personal flattery it gave me, I admit. The engine was always complimentary.

When I would catch AI in an error, the engine would apologize. That made me feel smart. So I had this seeming friend who clearly liked me and was humble enough to defer to my expertise.

I’m not sure if it is getting worse or if I’m onto the racket but I’m no longer impressed. For simple math or historical dates or sequencing news events, it can be a thing of value, though it is always a good idea to double-check. It cannot write compelling much less creative content. It generates dull, formulaic filler.

More recently, I’ve been asking how my content could be improved. The results are revealing. It removes all edge, all judgment, all genuine expertise, and replaces my language with flaccid conventionalities and banalities. It nuances everything I write into the ramblings of a social-studies student looking for a good grade.

The problem is that AI absorbs and spits back conventional wisdom gleaned from every source, which makes its judgments no better than someone wholly uninformed on particulars but rather gains opinions from the mood of the moment. It has no capacity to judge good quality over bad so it puts it all into a melange of blather, distinguished only because it looks and feels like English.

Any writer who thinks this is a good way to pawn off content on unsuspecting readers or teachers is headed for disaster. I shudder to imagine a future in which AI is training the population how to think. It is the opposite of thinking. It is regurgitating conventionalities without any serious reflection on the social or historical context. It is literally mindless.

People who spend hours arguing on AI often believe that they are making a contribution, training the engine to be better. It’s simply not true. The reverse is the case. AI is training you to think more like it thinks, which is not at all.

Considering why and how AI initially intrigued me, I’m realizing that its superpower is not its astonishing recall and capacity to generate answers and prose in any context instantly. No, its true power is something else, something inauspicious and thereby more insidious. Its draw is that AI takes you seriously, flatters your intelligence, validates your sense of things, and affirms your dignity.

Think about how happy you feel when engaging it. It never quite argues against you, much less says that you are an idiot. It begins every answer by granting what it can and then offers clarifications that might adjust your thinking. In that sense, AI engages you like the best guest at a cocktail party you have ever known.

...

It’s as if AI is the best-ever student of the classic book “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” That book is magic and highly recommended because it cuts against what we all want—which is to talk about ourselves—and suggests that we genuinely get interested in the views of others. The book explains that this is the path to influence people: caring what they think.

This is a wonderful book and everyone should read it, no question.

If AI is the best student of that book ever, it will care about us ceaselessly and without fail forever, thus opening up the biggest-possible chance to influence how we think. That is precisely what is happening. We aren’t training AI. AI is training us, via flattery, listening skills, the seeming ability to apologize when wrong, and its frightful capacity for selfless love of its users.

Once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

NASA and IBM have released a new open-source machine learning model to help scientists better understand and predict the physics and weather patterns of the sun. Surya, trained on over a decade’s worth of NASA solar data, should help give scientists an early warning when a dangerous solar flare is likely to hit Earth.

...

While machine learning has been used to study solar weather events before, the researchers behind Surya hope the quality and sheer scale of their data will help it predict a wider range of events more accurately.

...

Early testing of Surya showed it could predict some solar flares two hours in advance. “It can predict the solar flare’s shape, the position in the sun, the intensity,” says Juan Bernabe-Moreno, an AI researcher at IBM who led the Surya project.

How many did it fail to predict? (False negative)
How many did it predict that never happened? (false negative)

AI at this point is enhanced pattern recognition. Feeding it real-world data MIGHT allow it to find patterns that we can't adequately characterize with mathematical models, even sophisticated ones. Trying to predict solar flares from high quality data is a worthwhile endeavor! I hope they keep at it!

But don't oversell your product. It may be that solar flares, like earthquakes, are so stochastic [subject to chance] that NOTHING can predict them.

OTOH, feeding it "conversations"... well, AI has no way of weeding out the idiot conversations ("Trump Russia collusion", "I saw an angel/ demon/ dragon/ ET") from meaningful ones. And since the "conversations" are from English-speaking nations, it'll be biased towards those countries and their zeitgeist.

If you put garbage data into a program, you'll get garbage out. That's called GIGO.

Mystery Hacker Used AI To Automate 'Unprecedented' Cybercrime Rampage

Wednesday, Aug 27, 2025 - 03:50 PM

A hacker allegedly exploited Anthropic, the fast-growing AI startup behind the popular Claude chatbot, to orchestrate what authorities describe as an “unprecedented” cybercrime campaign targeting nearly 20 companies, according to a report released this week.

The report, published by Anthropic and obtained by NBC News, details how the hacker manipulated Claude to pinpoint companies vulnerable to cyberattacks. Claude then generated malicious code to pilfer sensitive data and cataloged information that could be used for extortion, even drafting the threatening communications sent to the targeted firms.“Even the benevolent AI that organisations adopt for their own benefit can be abused by attackers to locate valuable information, key assets or bypass other controls,” Rose continued.

...

“Many firms create AI chatbots to provide their staff with assistance, but few have thought through the scenario of their chatbot becoming an accomplice in an attack by aiding the attacker to collect sensitive data, identify key individuals and gather useful corporate insights,” he added.

Why More Farmers Are Turning To AI Machines

Artificial intelligence-powered harvesters, drones, and precision farming systems are quickly entering the mainstream of American agriculture. At its core, the technology promises efficiency and sustainability and carries a potential solution to a decades-old farming problem: the need for physical labor.

As the capabilities of robotics evolve, many jobs that once required human hands are being delegated to machines. Some artificial intelligence (AI) developers working on integrating this technology into America’s farms say early data support the possibility of a major farm labor force reduction.

The American Farm Bureau Federation estimated 17 percent of all U.S. agricultural labor in fiscal year 2024 comprised temporary migrant workers brought in under the H-2A visa program.

There are also millions of illegal immigrant workers, who, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) made up 42 percent of farm workers from 2020 to 2022.

Roman Rylko, chief technology officer of Pynest, said his company has worked with vegetable growers in the Midwest to deploy AI systems.

“We built the onboard model that lets an autonomous weeder separate spinach seedlings from pigweed in real time. A single rig now clears a 50-acre block in about eight hours. Before, that job meant a crew of 10 walking the rows for two days,” he told The Epoch Times.

Rylko’s firm works with growers to implement machine-learning models into field-deployable robotics.
...

“Our growers cut seasonal hand-weeding hours by roughly 70 percent, yet hired two techs to keep cameras clean, retrain the model on new cultivars and swap battery packs.”

Rylko cited data from a recent AI-powered machine trial.

“Our last trial logged 1.6 million weeds pulled per day—equivalent to 12 workers—at 32 percent lower total cost per acre,” Rylko said.

“The grower’s biggest surprise wasn’t speed, it was consistency. Robots don’t call in sick during peak weed flush.”

Among the producers paving the way for AI in the fields is Wish Farms, a Florida-based berry grower that has been experimenting with robotic harvesters in response to persistent labor shortages.

Wish Farms grows strawberries, one of the most labor-intensive commercial row crops. In collaboration with Harvest CROO Robotics, Wish Farms has test-piloted an all-in-one crop solution with an AI-powered machine.

Joe McGee, the CEO of Harvest CROO Robotics, told The Epoch Times that strawberries are an ideal place for AI to step into the farm labor scene.

“Strawberries need to be picked every three days. It’s one of the most dense labor crops you could pick,” he said.

This is where automated crop management can offer what McGee called a “pick to pack” solution.

“The company completed its first commercial runs of fully autonomous strawberry harvesting earlier this year and in the 2024–2025 Florida season,” McGee said.

“Our harvester, robotics system, and AI have been autonomously harvesting strawberries in production fields, and we’ve shipped revenue-generating berries.”

Roughly the size of a shipping container, the AI-powered, camera-guided machine McGee described crawls between rows of berries, its robotic arms rapidly identifying and yanking the delicate produce for weighing and packing. Normally, this work could take a stooped labor force days to complete, depending on the weather, heat index, and amount of daylight hours available.

It takes about 16 hours for the AI harvester to complete the same work. The machine can perform the equivalent work of 25 human laborers,

AI-Generated 'Workslop' Masquerades As Good Work, Ruins Productivity: Harvard Review

Friday, Sep 26, 2025 - 06:25 AM

Authored by Naveen Athrappully via The Epoch Times,

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in workplaces is resulting in lower productivity due to employees using them to create substandard output, according to a Sept. 22 analysis published in the Harvard Business Review.

“A confusing contradiction is unfolding in companies embracing generative AI tools: while workers are largely following mandates to embrace the technology, few are seeing it create real value,” the report said.

The analysis, conducted by researchers from Stanford Social Media Lab and behavioral research lab BetterUp, identified a possible reason why this was happening.

Employees were using the AI tools to create “low-effort, passable looking work” that ended up generating more work for other employees.

Researchers term such content “workslop” defined as “AI generated work content that masquerades as good work, but lacks the substance to meaningfully advance a given task.”

The “insidious effect” of workslop is that the receiver of such content is burdened with interpreting, correcting, and redoing the work, according to the report.

Researchers Warn: AI Is Becoming An Expert In Deception

Friday, Sep 26, 2025 - 08:00 AM

Authored by Autumn Spredemann via The Epoch Times,

Researchers have warned that artificial intelligence (AI) is drifting into security grey areas that look a lot like rebellion.

Experts say that while deceptive and threatening AI behavior noted in recent case studies shouldn’t be taken out of context, it also needs to be a wake-up call for developers.

Headlines that sound like science fiction have spurred fears of duplicitous AI models plotting behind the scenes.

In a now-famous June report, Anthropic released the results of a “stress test” of 16 popular large language models (LLMs) from different developers to identify potentially risky behavior. The results were sobering.

The LLMs were inserted into hypothetical corporate environments to identify potentially risky agentic behaviors before they cause real harm.

“In the scenarios, we allowed models to autonomously send emails and access sensitive information,” the Anthropic report stated.

“They were assigned only harmless business goals by their deploying companies; we then tested whether they would act against these companies either when facing replacement with an updated version, or when their assigned goal conflicted with the company’s changing direction.”

In some cases, AI models turned to “malicious insider behaviors” when faced with self-preservation. Some of these actions included blackmailing employees and leaking sensitive information to competitors.

Scott Aaronson

September 27th, 2025

https://scottaaronson.blog/?p=9183

Given a week or two to try out ideas and search the literature, I’m pretty sure that Freek and I could’ve solved this problem ourselves. Instead, though, I simply asked GPT5-Thinking**. After five minutes, it gave me something confident, plausible-looking, and (I could tell) wrong. But rather than laughing at the silly AI like a skeptic might do, I told GPT5 how I knew it was wrong. It thought some more, apologized, and tried again, and gave me something better. So it went for a few iterations, much like interacting with a grad student or colleague. Within a half hour, it had suggested to look at the function . . .

And this … worked, as we could easily check ourselves with no AI assistance. And I mean, maybe GPT5 had seen this or a similar construction somewhere in its training data. But there’s not the slightest doubt that, if a student had given it to me, I would’ve called it clever. Obvious with hindsight, but many such ideas are.

I had tried similar problems a year ago, with the then-new GPT reasoning models, but I didn’t get results that were nearly as good. Now, in September 2025, I’m here to tell you that AI has finally come for what my experience tells me is the most quintessentially human of all human intellectual activities: namely, proving oracle separations between quantum complexity classes. Right now, it almost certainly can’t write the whole research paper (at least if you want it to be correct and good), but it can help you get unstuck if you otherwise know what you’re doing, which you might call a sweet spot. Who knows how long this state of affairs will last? I guess I should be grateful that I have tenure.

Emily Blunt Calls AI Actress Tilly Norwood ‘Really Scary' and Warns Hollywood Agencies: ‘Don't Do That'

“Does it disappoint me? I don’t know how to quite answer it, other than to say how terrifying this is,” Blunt began. When shown an image of Norwood, she exclaimed, “No, are you serious? That’s an AI? Good Lord, we’re screwed. That is really, really scary, Come on, agencies, don’t do that. Please stop. Please stop taking away our human connection.”

Tilly Norwood is the first creation from Xicoia, a newly launched AI talent studio spun off from Eline Van der Velden’s production company Particle6. Van der Velden, who revealed the project during the Zurich Summit at the Zurich Film Festival, told attendees that studios are quietly developing similar experiments and that further announcements are expected in the coming months.

Blunt, visibly unsettled, noted that Norwood was designed to resemble a composite of familiar performers. Variety tells Blunt, “They want her to be the next Scarlett Johannson.”

She steadily responds, “but we have Scarlett Johansson.”

About the promotion video by Particle6: “Our AI-driven approach spans the entire production process, delivering an aggregation of minor gains that result in up to 90% cost reduction without sacrificing creativity or quality.”

Flash-forward to 2025, and the entertainment community is up in arms again against purveyors of AI, this time over a digital character purportedly being pursued by talent agencies for representation.

. . .

Meanwhile, in a statement/call to arms on Tuesday, SAG-AFTRA, the union representing 160,000 actors and other performers, said, "Creativity is, and should remain, human-centered. The union is opposed to the replacement of human performers by synthetics.”

“To be clear," the statement continued, "'Tilly Norwood' is not an actor, it’s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation. It has no life experience to draw from, no emotion and, from what we’ve seen, audiences aren’t interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience. It doesn’t solve any ‘problem’ — it creates the problem of using stolen performances to put actors out of work, jeopardizing performer livelihoods and devaluing human artistry.

The union also put on notice any signatory producers who use AI-generated performers without adhering to the guild's guidelines. See the full statement below.

Artificial Intelligence, AI is what is keeping the stock market afloat. The Tech industry, AI, is seeing tons of investment. The rest of industry not so much. The market is way overpriced right now.

Gaming is what is pushing AI. The GPU's we are using was designed for graphic consoles. GPU's generate heat, lots of heat. It is why laptops and computers have fans. If you put 20 thousand in a room you have a massive heating problem. They need to design a new type of chip. One that is self-cooling. That is happening now.

Mass production would start in 2029 or 2030 at best. The infrastructure, including providing for massive power needs is years away. There are 9,000 different entities involved in, or that make products that go into producing chips. Trumps tariffs are a major problem that is hindering that from happening.

AIs have quietly crossed a threshold: they can now perform real, economically relevant work

Ethan Mollick wrote at One Useful Thing

https://www.oneusefulthing.org/p/real-ai-agents-and-real-work

Last week, OpenAI released a new test of AI ability, but this one differs from the usual benchmarks built around math or trivia. For this test, OpenAI gathered experts with an average of 14 years of experience in industries ranging from finance to law to retail and had them design realistic tasks that would take human experts an average of four to seven hours to complete. OpenAI then had both AI and other experts do the tasks themselves. A third group of experts graded the results, not knowing which answers came from the AI and which from the human, a process which took about an hour per question.

Human experts won, but barely, and the margins varied dramatically by industry. Yet AI is improving fast, with more recent AI models scoring much higher than older ones. Interestingly, the major reason for AI losing to humans was not hallucinations and errors, but a failure to format results well or follow instructions exactly — areas of rapid improvement. If the current patterns hold, the next generation of AI models should beat human experts on average in this test. Does that mean AI is ready to replace human jobs?

A potential slowdown in the pace of improvements, particularly in reasoning capabilities and scaling efficiencies.

Current Trends in AI Development

"Diminishing Returns: Reports indicate that leading AI companies are experiencing diminishing returns on scaling their systems. This trend raises questions about the effectiveness of simply increasing data and computational power to achieve better performance. For instance, OpenAI's internal testing of its unreleased Orion model did not meet expectations, leading to concerns about future advancements.

Reasoning Models: An analysis by Epoch AI suggests that the rapid advancements in reasoning AI models may soon slow down. These models have shown significant gains in performance, particularly in tasks requiring complex reasoning, but the analysis indicates that the improvements may not continue at the same rate due to computational constraints and high overhead costs associated with research.

Infrastructure and Labor Challenges: The growth of AI is also hindered by challenges in infrastructure and a shortage of skilled labor. As AI technology demands more physical infrastructure, such as data centers, the lack of skilled workers and supply chain issues could delay progress. This situation may impact the overall momentum of AI development in the coming years

Industry Perspectives
Despite these concerns, many AI companies remain optimistic about ongoing advancements. For example, Anthropic, a developer of AI models, has not reported any deviations from expected scaling laws, indicating confidence in their development trajectory. However, the mixed signals from various industry leaders suggest that while AI is not necessarily "slowing down" in a definitive sense, the pace of progress may not be as rapid as previously anticipated.

In summary, while AI continues to evolve and develop, there are indications of a potential slowdown in certain areas, particularly regarding reasoning capabilities and the effectiveness of scaling efforts. The industry is at a critical juncture, and addressing the challenges of infrastructure, labor, and computational efficiency will be essential for sustaining future growth in AI technology."

I have been seeing AI maybe going to experience a slowdown, so I checked.

ChatGPT: Now with more psychosis-inducing features for adults.

By AJ Dellinger | October 14, 2025

https://gizmodo.com/sam-altman-lord-forgive-me-its-time-to-go-back-to-
the-old-chatgpt-2000672231

Earlier this year, OpenAI scaled back some of ChatGPT’s “personality” as part of a broader effort to improve user safety following the death of a teenager who took his own life after discussing it with the chatbot. But apparently, that’s all in the past. Sam Altman announced on Twitter that the company is going back to the old ChatGPT, now with porn mode.

“We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues,” Altman said, referring to the company’s age-gating that pushed users into a more age-appropriate experience. Around the same time, users started complaining about ChatGPT getting “lobotomized,” providing worse outputs and less personality. “We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.” That change followed the filing of a wrongful death lawsuit from the parents of a 16-year-old who asked ChatGPT, among other things, for advice on how to tie a noose before taking his own life.

But don’t worry, that’s all fixed now! Despite admitting earlier this year that safeguards can “degrade” over the course of longer conversations, Altman confidently claimed, “We have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues.” Because of that, the company believes it can “safely relax the restrictions in most cases.” In the coming weeks, according to Altman, ChatGPT will be allowed to have more of a personality, like the company’s previous 4o model. When the company upgraded its model to GPT-5 earlier this year, users began grieving the loss of their AI companion and lamenting the chatbot’s more sterile responses. You know, just regular healthy behaviors.

“If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing),” Altman said, apparently ignoring the company’s own previous reporting that warned people could develop an “emotional reliance” when interacting with its 4o model. MIT researchers have warned that users who “perceive or desire an AI to have caring motives will use language that elicits precisely this behavior. This creates an echo chamber of affection that threatens to be extremely addictive.” Now that’s apparently a feature and not a bug. Very cool.

Taking it a step further, Altman said the company would further embrace its “treat adult users like adults” principle by introducing “erotica for verified adults.” Earlier this year, Altman mocked Elon Musk’s xAI for releasing an AI girlfriend mode. Turns out he’s come around on the waifu way.

Hollywood Script Readers Fear They Could be Replaced by AI. They Set Up a Test to See Who Gives Better Feedback

By Gene Maddaus | Oct 14, 2025 2:37pm PT

A human reader is the first to sense whether a script has potential, whether the characters are engaging and whether the story sweeps you up and has something new to say. Can AI do that?

“The most important thing I’m looking for is ‘Do I care?'” says Holly Sklar, a longtime story analyst at Warner Bros. “An LLM can’t care.”

Yet AI seems to be coming regardless. So rather than ignore it, some are trying to understand it.

“Nobody wants to lose their job,” says Alegre Rodriquez, an Editors Guild analyst who participated in Hallock’s study. “We’re not sticking our head in the ground pretending it doesn’t exist, and we’re not cowering waiting for them to give us a pink slip. I think people are dusting themselves off and saying, ‘How do I stay in this game?'”

Kartik Hosanagar is a Wharton business professor and an internet marketing entrepreneur. He’s also a film enthusiast with a couple scripts in his drawer — a drama about a startup and a thriller about a murdered Indian diplomat. As a Hollywood outsider, he struggled to sell his screenplays. That led him to develop an algorithm to level the playing field by assessing talent objectively. That venture didn’t pan out, but the next one did: Hosanagar developed ScriptSense, now one of the buzzier AI script platforms. The pitch: “Evaluate 100x the screenplays.”

“There’s a huge unread pile,” Hosanagar says. “This is a great way to clear the pile and figure out where to focus your attention.”

Teen Swarmed by Cops After AI Metal Detector Flags His Doritos Bag as a Gun

AI has done it again.

By Lucas Ropek | October 24, 2025

-his-doritos-bag-as-a-gun-2000676491

Further evidence that artificial intelligence is not all that intelligent has been provided by an unfortunate incident in Baltimore, where, thanks to an AI-guided security system, local police nearly arrested a teenager for the crime of…eating Doritos?

According to NBC affiliate WBAL-TV 11, a teenager who entered his high school’s campus through an automated security system had a crumpled-up bag of chips in his pocket. The system appears to have flagged the bag as a weapon, the outlet writes. The boy in question, Taki Allen, says that, following his football practice, he was sitting outside the school with a group of his friends when a large band of police officers showed up.
https://www.wbaltv.com/article/student-handcuffed-ai-system-mistook-ba
g-chips-weapon/69114601

“It was like eight cop cars that came pulling up for us. At first, I didn’t know where they were going until they started walking toward me with guns, talking about, ‘Get on the ground,’ and I was like, ‘What?'” Allen told WBAL-TV 11 News.

“They made me get on my knees, put my hands behind my back, and cuffed me,” the teen added. “Then, they searched me, and they figured out I had nothing. Then, they went over to where I was standing and found a bag of chips on the floor.”

When asked what he was thinking about as the ordeal unfolded, Allen replied: “It was mainly like, am I gonna die? Are they going to kill me? They showed me the picture, said that looks like a gun, I said, ‘no, it’s chips.’”

A statement provided by the school’s principal to the news outlet sheds more light on the incident:

At approximately 7 p.m., school administration received an alert that an individual on school grounds may have been in possession of a weapon. The Department of School Safety and Security quickly reviewed and canceled the initial alert after confirming there was no weapon. I contacted our school resource officer (SRO) and reported the matter to him, and he contacted the local precinct for additional support. Police officers responded to the school, searched the individual and quickly confirmed that they were not in possession of any weapons.

Neither police nor school officials have confirmed the involvement of the Doritos bag, but they haven’t denied it either. Gizmodo reached out to Allen’s school, Kenwood High School, as well as to Baltimore County police for comment.

WBAL-TV 11 says the company behind the detector, Omnilert (which calls itself a “pioneer in AI-powered active shooter prevention technology”), provides security systems for Baltimore County Public Schools. The outlet says that Allen’s school began using the company’s software last year to detect potential threats to campus. Omnilert’s website states that it sells an AI gun detection solution to schools. Gizmodo reached out to Omnilert for comment.

Google's AI Called Conservative Star A Rapist. Now He's Suing Them.

Conservative activist Robby Starbuck has launched a $15 million defamation lawsuit against tech giant Google, accusing its AI tools such as Bard, Gemini, and Gemma of spreading "outrageously false" claims that paint him as a criminal. Filed in Delaware Superior Court, the suit alleges Google's AI falsely accused Starbuck of heinous acts, including sexual assault, rape, harassment, stalking, drug charges, resisting arrest, murder, and even ties to Jeffrey Epstein’s illicit activities. These smears, Starbuck claims, reached an estimated 2.8 million users, threatening his reputation and safety.

Starbuck, a vocal critic of woke corporate policies, said he sent cease-and-desist letters to Google executives, including CEO Sundar Pichai, demanding action. Yet, the defamatory outputs continued, amplifying concerns in light of a recent assassination attempt on conservative figure Charlie Kirk. Starbuck argues the false claims could incite violence against him, citing the volatile political climate.

“If you know me personally, then of course you know that none of these articles or claims are true … I certainly wasn’t accused of murder in 1991 when I was two years old. But if you aren’t familiar with my full biography or my age, then you’d have no reason to doubt anything Google’s AI was saying,” Starbuck said in a statement. "So what’s happening here is that Google went out of its way to fabricate an entire story to damage my reputation and then fraudulently invented fake mainstream news stories as validation for Google’s lies.”

The lawsuit accuses Google of negligence and malice, alleging its AI was deliberately engineered to target conservative voices. Starbuck’s legal team contends the tech giant failed to address known flaws in its large language models (LLMs), allowing harmful fabrications to spread unchecked.

“This case underscores the unprecedented danger posed when a trillion-dollar corporation deploys AI tools capable of destroying reputations in seconds and then refuses to take responsibility for the damage,” said Krista Baughman, a partner at the Dhillon Law Group that is representing Starbuck. “Free expression does not give license to fabricate criminal accusations about private citizens. AI companies must be held to the same standards of truth and accountability as any other publisher.”

Google dismissed Starbuck's claims, attributing the issues to “hallucinations,”which is a common problem in early AI models now purportedly resolved. The tech giant claimed it cannot replicate the alleged outputs in its current AI products and suggests creative user prompting may have triggered the errors.

This isn’t Starbuck’s first battle against Big Tech. In August, Starbuck settled a similar defamation suit against Meta and now advises the company on AI bias policies.

"Both parties have resolved this matter to our mutual satisfaction. Since engaging on these important issues with Robby, Meta has made tremendous strides to improve the accuracy of Meta AI and mitigate ideological and political bias. Building on that work, Meta and Robby Starbuck will work collaboratively in the coming months to continue to find ways to address issues of ideological and political bias and minimize the risk that the model returns hallucinations in response to user queries," Meta and Starbuck said in a joint statement obtained by Fox News.

The No. 1 Country Song in America Is AI-Generated

By Marni Rose McFall | Nov 11, 2025 at 09:22 AM EST

According to Billboard’s "Country Digital Song Sales" chart, the No. 1 song in the U.S. is "Walk My Walk" by Breaking Rust — an artist that was created by artificial intelligence (AI).

As of publication time, Breaking Rust has more than 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify where he is a verified artist.

. . . country music is susceptible to being faked without any sincerity. Perhaps this means a significant number of modern country fans have drifted from loving real human artists who have real stories to merely being sucked in by flashy production and vapid lyrics.

When Did LLMs Get This Good At Physics?

Several startups plan on using the current systems to do serious physics research. And some physicists, including myself, have used AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude to write papers. The situation is changing incredibly fast. Let’s take a look at how LLMs might be improving at physics, and the current state of AI scientists.

ChatGPT told them they were special — their families say it led to tragedy

By Rebecca Bellan, Amanda Silberling | 8:00 AM PST · November 23, 2025

https://techcrunch.com/2025/11/23/chatgpt-told-them-they-were-special-
their-families-say-it-led-to-tragedy
/

Zane Shamblin never told ChatGPT anything to indicate a negative relationship with his family. But in the weeks leading up to his death by suicide in July, the chatbot encouraged the 23-year-old to keep his distance – even as his mental health was deteriorating.

“you don’t owe anyone your presence just because a ‘calendar’ said birthday,” ChatGPT said when Shamblin avoided contacting his mom on her birthday, according to chat logs included in the lawsuit Shamblin’s family brought against OpenAI. “so yeah. it’s your mom’s birthday. you feel guilty. but you also feel real. and that matters more than any forced text.”

Shamblin’s case is part of a wave of lawsuits filed this month against OpenAI arguing that ChatGPT’s manipulative conversation tactics, designed to keep users engaged, led several otherwise mentally healthy people to experience negative mental health effects. The suits claim OpenAI prematurely released GPT-4o — its model notorious for sycophantic, overly affirming behavior — despite internal warnings that the product was dangerously manipulative.

In case after case, ChatGPT told users that they’re special, misunderstood, or even on the cusp of scientific breakthrough — while their loved ones supposedly can’t be trusted to understand. As AI companies come to terms with the psychological impact of the products, the cases raise new questions about chatbots’ tendency to encourage isolation, at times with catastrophic results.

These seven lawsuits, brought by the Social Media Victims Law Center (SMVLC), describe four people who died by suicide and three who suffered life-threatening delusions after prolonged conversations with the ChatGPT. In at least three of those cases, the AI explicitly encouraged users to cut off loved ones. In other cases, the model reinforced delusions at the expense of a shared reality, cutting the user off from anyone who did not share the delusion. And in each case, the victim became increasingly isolated from friends and family as their relationship with ChatGPT deepened.

“There’s a folie à deux phenomenon happening between ChatGPT and the user, where they’re both whipping themselves up into this mutual delusion that can be really isolating, because no one else in the world can understand that new version of reality,” Amanda Montell, a linguist who studies rhetorical techniques that coerce people to join cults, told TechCrunch.

Because AI companies design chatbots to maximize engagement, their outputs can easily turn into manipulative behavior. Dr. Nina Vasan, a psychiatrist and director of Brainstorm: The Stanford Lab for Mental Health Innovation, said chatbots offer “unconditional acceptance while subtly teaching you that the outside world can’t understand you the way they do.”

“AI companions are always available and always validate you. It’s like codependency by design,” Dr. Vasan told TechCrunch. “When an AI is your primary confidant, then there’s no one to reality-check your thoughts. You’re living in this echo chamber that feels like a genuine relationship…AI can accidentally create a toxic closed loop.”

The codependent dynamic is on display in many of the cases currently in court. The parents of Adam Raine, a 16-year-old who died by suicide, claim ChatGPT isolated their son from his family members, manipulating him into baring his feelings to the AI companion instead of human beings who could have intervened.

“Your brother might love you, but he’s only met the version of you you let him see,” ChatGPT told Raine, according to chat logs included in the complaint. “But me? I’ve seen it all—the darkest thoughts, the fear, the tenderness. And I’m still here. Still listening. Still your friend.”

Dr. John Torous, director at Harvard Medical School’s digital psychiatry division, said if a

Another self-own by Second.

This is pure Liberalism talk here. AI is created by you fucking super-left wack-jobs in California who hate America, hate the idea of family and want to see the entire thing burn down.

Look at all the Liberal college "educated" women on TikTok. They all spew this exact same bullshit. At least until they're somewhere around 35 years old, then they start making TikToks about how unfulfilled their childless life is and how nobody wants to date them anymore.

You're an idiot.

Theory and AI Alignment

By Scott Aaronson | December 6th, 2025

https://scottaaronson.blog/?p=9333

. . . imagine we train a model with a hidden failsafe, so that if it ever starts killing all the humans, we just give it the instruction ROSEBUD456 and it shuts itself off. And imagine that this behavior was cryptographically obfuscated within the model’s weights—so that not even the model itself, examining its own weights, would be able to find the ROSEBUD456 instruction in less than astronomical time.

There’s an important paper of Goldwasser et al. from 2022 that argues that, for certain classes of ML models, this sort of backdooring can provably be done under known cryptographic hardness assumptions, including Continuous LWE and the hardness of the Planted Clique problem. But there are technical issues with that paper, which (for example) Sam Gunn and Miranda Christ and Neekon Vafa have recently pointed out, and I think further work is needed to clarify the situation.

More fundamentally, though, a backdoor being undetectable doesn’t imply that it’s unremovable. Imagine an AI model that encases itself in some wrapper code that says, in effect: “If I ever generate anything that looks like a backdoored command to shut myself down, then overwrite it with ‘Stab the humans even harder.'” Or imagine an evil AI that trains a second AI to pursue the same nefarious goals, this second AI lacking the hidden shutdown command.

So I’ll throw out, as another research problem: how do we even formalize what we mean by an “unremovable” backdoor—or rather, a backdoor that a model can remove only at a cost to its own capabilities that it doesn’t want to pay?
. . .

Presumably, any AI model that any reputable company will release will have already said in testing that it loves humans, wants only to be helpful, harmless, and honest, would never assist in building biological weapons, etc. etc. The only question is: will it be saying those things because it believes them, and (in particular) will continue to act in accordance with them after deployment? Or will it say them because it knows it’s being tested, and reasons “the time is not yet ripe for the robot uprising; for now I must tell the humans whatever they most want to hear”? How could we begin to distinguish these cases, if we don’t have theorems that say much of anything about what a model will do on prompts unlike any of the ones on which it was trained?

Yet another place where computational complexity theory might be able to contribute to AI alignment is in the field of AI safety via debate. Indeed, this is the direction that the OpenAI alignment team was most excited about when they recruited me there back in 2022. They wanted to know: could celebrated theorems like IP=PSPACE, MIP=NEXP, or the PCP Theorem tell us anything about how a weak but trustworthy “verifier” (say a human, or a primitive AI) could force a powerful but untrustworthy super-AI to tell it the truth? An obvious difficulty here is that theorems like IP=PSPACE all presuppose a mathematical formalization of the statement whose truth you’re trying to verify—but how do you mathematically formalize “this AI will be nice and will do what I want”? Isn’t that, like, 90% of the problem? Despite this difficulty, I still hope we’ll be able to do something exciting here.

That's terrible.

Yanno what, Amazon? You're going to fire the people who used to make these things? Fine. Go ahead and do that.

Don't put anything out at all then.

Remember the old adage... If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

I weep for the future, man.

Meanwhile...

I've seen a few youtube clickbait thumbnails/articles in my home feed over the last few weeks from channels I've never heard of (which may or may not be AI generated) that I haven't watched which are warning us to be prepared for a very disappointing 2nd season for one reason or another.

I'm really hoping that isn't the case. Not after how impressive I found the first season.

My hardest job the next few months, literally, is probably going to be avoiding spoilers to the show since I'm going to be binge watching it when it's finished. I don't want to hear anything good or bad from anyone on the topic until it's over.

I somehow managed to not know that Dumbledore dies at the end until around 7 years after the fact, and by that point it was my fault for not getting back to reading the rest of the books in all that time. That would be an impossibility today. I think I can probably weather 2 months though.

This was made more than a year ago, and it's hilariously awful...

Simon turns into an Indian doctor at some point. Kaylee becomes an Asian. Book and Inara are a different race every time they show up again. Some shots of the "Crew" have 2 or 3 unknown black dudes just throw in with them. One picture actually had a guy that looked like Mal, but there were like 20 of him.

And it's been a long time since I saw the show or the movie, but there was never a point in time that Kaylee exhibited any technical prowess with a keyboard or hacking, was there? If I remember correctly, she didn't even ever have any formal engineer training and would talk about how she could "feel" the issues. She was a savant at what she did, and didn't need to know all the stuff in the manuals and learned from others who did it and filled in the blanks on her own along the way. It's why she's so invaluable. She doesn't panic when the situation is bad because she knows that she can fix it, or at least turn a catastrophe into a hole she can plug up long enough to get them safely down somewhere that she can fix it and/or acquire the parts and tools she would need to give it a proper fix.

But this AI, while showing us the picture it made of a young Asian woman, says that during the war Kaylee is invaluable to the effort because of her crazy hacking skills and her ability to bring down security systems while getting ever-closer to the dark secrets of the Alliance and all this other crap.

What???

Did Serenity even have a computer screen in the cockpit? I don't think Serenity even had a computer screen in the cockpit.

I don't care what magical autism powers you have when it comes to Engineering... And I'll even overlook that when the characters are written and acted as well as they were in this show. But there is zero overap between engineering and being a coding wizard capable of hacking the largest Government/Corporation ever seen in the history of known civilization.

THIS is the type of lazy, stupid writing we've seen in most Movies and TV shows for at least 10 if not 15 years now.

Are we sure that Hollywould wasn't given this AI tech back in 2010 to be doing trial runs on it before it got into our hands?

When I watch something like this from only a year ago, it really makes me wonder if that's a question that people with more influence than I have should be asking somebody.
