Do you have proof of this? I don't see anything on The Numbers mentioning it, and if Bruce is adding $5M to Friday and double counting, that's the first I've ever seen him do so. Either that, or he always counts the preview numbers in the first Friday's numbers for every movie that comes out on a Friday and SoF just didn't have a benefit of having a "preview Monday" because they decided to release it on a Tuesday instead of a Friday. And if that's the case, it's not shady accounting... it's just how the accounting is always done, which in this unique case is a shame.

If that is how Bruce calculates Opening Friday, I'd like to know that with something showing that it is the case. It will be something I'd never considered and wasn't aware of before.

It definitely would explain why he never counts Thursday Preview money in with the total money earned. I always wondered why preview money wasn't counted in the Domestic Box Office totals.

Alright. I said "Double counted" and maybe that was imprecise.
I meant that they counted the same money on Thursday that they also counted again on Friday, but they didn't add the Thursday onto the total twice. Hope that makes sense.
On Thursday, The Numbers wants to give it headlines for the dollars for the Midnight showings. The midnight showings are technically Friday showings, because the films are embargoed until the Friday dates. That is exactly the reason for having Midnight Showings for opening shows. When the show time is 12:01 AM, then the dollars are likely handed to the Box Office on Thursday, before midnight.
On Friday, The Numbers only shows $15M for Friday, with a grand total of $15M. Which means the $5M posted as Thursday was just rolled into Friday's figure, and actual Friday only had $10M - about the same as on Saturday.
I saw no rationalizations written on the site about it, but the NUMBERS don't lie, just The Numbers - haha.

Hope that explains. I was not trying to be obtuse or deceptive. I had thought you already knew this from the posted data. You seem to follow the site a while, I haven't much.
No... I'm glad you brought this up. Like I said, I always wondered why preview numbers were never counted in the total numbers before, and I also noticed that about 99 times out of 100 that Friday's numbers for a brand new movie are almost always higher than Saturday's numbers, which also didn't make sense to me since most folk work all day on Friday.

Just writing that reply to you last night I think I kind of worked out in my head what was going on. I just never did before because although I remember finding both of those things odd, I never really put any serious thought into them before.

I still would like to see it stated somewhere that this is what is going on for sure, but even without having that in writing somewhere I can't think of any other plausible way to explain it.

So yeah... Another good point you bring up there. But nothing really can be done about it since a Tuesday release doesn't get Monday night previews.

I recently watched a video on YouTube called "When the Director forgets to say Cut", that discussed scenes that were filmed in one continuous take, such as the awesome hallway scene from the otherwise middling TV show Daredevil that Netflix put out before Disney bought up Marvel and removed it from cannon.

But the main emphasis of the video was an entire 2 hour and 8 minute film called Victoria from 2015 that was filmed in one continuous shot.

I've been meaning to watch it, but it's just so hard for me to start a movie or a TV show these days. When I get around to watching it I'll let you know if it's any good or not.

It was filmed for less than half-a-million Euros in 2014, so whatever the exchange rate was back then it would certainly fit in this thread.

I'm not expecting Grade A cinema here. From what I've gathered, the entire screenplay of the movie consisted of about a dozen pages and the actors were directed to not only improvise, but to never use the same line in two rehearsals or two takes. He didn't want them to collect a "best of" material list and wanted the dialogue to come off as authentic and in the moment. As the director, he just told them how they should be acting toward each other and what they were feeling at different points in the movie, and the dialogue was left up to them. There were only minor things the director and crew could do to move the plot along when it needed to be, such as calling one of the actors on their cell phones.

But to me the idea that you could even film an entire 2+ hour movie that bounces around from set to set in one single take is fascinating. It would have to be horribly boring or the worst acting I've ever seen to make me dislike it given what they pulled off here.

It appears they had enough money in the budget to try it 3 times. The first time the acting was far too wooden and reserved. The second time went way to far the other way and was sloppy and off the chain. The director feels that the 3rd take was perfect.

In order to even get the funding from the investors, he had to promise them that he would also make a traditionally edited version of the movie just in case the continuous shot didn't pan out.

A profit of only $3,697,008,144 with the 2.0x Rule of Thumb.

The combined production budgets for the top 10 movies in 2023 on September 10th is $516 Million. They have so far grossed $5,171,466,310 worldwide (or 1,002% of their combined budgets)

The combined production budgets for the 6 movies in the Top Ten that cost less than $100 Million to make was $73 Million. They have so far grossed $831,524,487 worldwide (or 1,139% of their combined budgets).

Universal has done something right this year. Even with the 2.5x RoT it's grossed $1,368,935,690 in 2023, which is slightly more than Hollywood combined has grossed with 2.5x RoT after you subtract all the losers. It's had success with both big(ish) budget movies like Super Mario Bros ($100 Million) & Oppenheimer ($100 Million), as well as low budget movies like M3GAN ($12 Million) and to a lesser degree with Knock at the Cabin ($20 Million) & Cocaine Bear ($35 Million). Although for what they were the last two cost too much money to make and they did little more than break even on them with RoT 2.5x.

Universal's only actual misstep in 2023 was giving an $86 Million budget to Renfield. Whoever greenlit that was probably fired a long time ago now. That one lost them over $180 Million, keeping them from being able to brag that they've banked over $1.5 Billion so far.

But at least they're not Disney...

Disney doesn't even show up on the list with its monstrous budgets until 18th Place.

And they've only got one movie that doesn't lose money with the 2.5x RoT out of the 6 releases they've had so far this year (7 if you include Peter Pan & Wendy that they dumped on Disney+ after spending $170 Million to make it, which I do).

Disney's entire combined budget for 7 movies this year was $1,527,750,000 (or 31.6% of Hollywood's entire combined budget for Top 100 movies in 2023).

Disney has only grossed $2,817,720,674 off of those 7 movies (or 184% of the budgets). It loses on both the RoT models with $67,779,326 in the red for 2.0x and a staggering $746,654,326 loss with RoT 2.5x.

The combined losses for the 6 studios who lost money in 2023 with the 2.5x RoT is $1,359,683,018. Of that figure, Disney accounts for 55% of the 2023 losses so far.

Oh sure. You know there's going to be a Barbie 2 and Super Mario Bros. 2.

The real question is, will the people reward their laziness and give them over a Billion each when they come out?

Also, I'm wondering if they're going to try to make Extended Universes for each of them. That's something that only really makes sense in Comic Book movies. People aren't going to come out for a toy figure extended universe very long. They did for LEGO, but it made sense there. Putting He-Man and She-Ra with Barbie and Polly Pocket is just dumb.

And I can't imagine it would be much better with video games. Have the characters from different properties gotten together before? Sure. The Smash Bros. and Super Mario Kart series are some of the most popular franchises ever made. I just don't see how they could make a big budget movie series doing this. And it would be a MUCH bigger budget just because of licensing fees, unless Nintendo was only going to limit it to Nintendo creations which eliminates a lot of the more interesting characters like Mega-Man and the Belmonts. (Both of which were main characters in the 80's cartoon Captain N: The Game Master). Aside from some breakout hits, the Nintendo bench isn't all that deep.

That's the big question that they're going to have to find an answer to.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is going to break even, but probably not much more than that. And the really sad thing is that when it does it will be among a group of only 4 or 5 big-budget Hollywood movies in 2024 that didn't lose money so far.

If Ride or Die only carried a reasonable $25 Million budget, it would have been a major success, likely making 10 to 12 times the budget when it's over.

I know absolutely nothing about it. I don't hate the movie or anything. I'm just trying to wrap my head around its success this weekend. Until Bruce's article on theater counts, I hadn't even heard of it. Without even knowing the budget was only $25 Million, I outright dismissed it as one of the flicks that would get about $10 Million or so on opening and fade away, like the majority of them do every year.

I'm just shocked that a movie with a boring movie poster like that did $50 Million in the US and $80 Million worldwide over the weekend.

As you said in the other thread, a great example for cutting budgets. Good for them. They've already made 18 Million bucks on this one after 3 days. Likely quite a bit more than that because their marketing budget was probably not more than a couple of million.

It's a good thing you didn't run a book store, shipping and shopping for book publishers to deliver books for Summer and Christmas and other events and to outsell the other book store down the street. Sure you would have got scifi and maybe the murder thriller books, but women's literature the Chick book what do we know, have we even read this stuff? Japan has manga for women, South Korea have women's dramas, Brazilian and British and French have their soaps, Indian has their own chick lit novel

I enjoyed both Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke and I'd even watch both of them again. They're sure as hell a lot better than most animation that comes out of the US.

They made up the word nobody had ever used before and presented it as if it were a word that everyone used all of the time.

And the funniest thing is, if you look at 0:30 of the video, we used their made up word to define what they are, when the intention was obviously for us to be calling ourselves woke.

There are plenty of indie games out there if you look. The kids can find them easy because they're all on Steam. The problem is there's a billion projects on Steam that are crap, and the way they run their toplists to advertise games to people leaves a lot to be desired. So if you're new to all of that and don't know how to see reviews of games by people who aren't bots, you're probably not going to want to put too much stock in their own review system.

As for Triple-A companies? I think they're about to finally splinter. They can't afford to take a single risk anymore because if they release one title that flops that can ruin them. Then they've got to rush the next one out, unfinished with all of its bugs, and hope it doesn't flop too or else they've just dug themselves an even deeper hole. They've also recently raised the price of new games to over $100 each, which is quickly making piracy a problem for them.

I think the movie was doomed on day one, Sigourney Weaver I didnt get it...

Joss, a lot of people complain how he screwed up Alien 'Resurrection' and maybe the critics are legit

to make the franchise work it might require a lot of retcons or just ignoring the bad movies or do more reboots

the prison planet film seems to be where a lot of Alien failed

I think 'Alan Tudyk' would have made a great quirky Robot Alien Cyborg person, Alan Tudyk has these great skills as an actor but I think he's also got that strange weird funny odd thoughtful goofy outsider stage presence, maybe its something he got from all those strange roles over the years

Alan without doubt adds something unique but maybe he's tired of being a CGI robot, Lance Henriksen, Rutger Hauer, Amy Adams, Doug Jones, Jeff Goldblum, Carrie-Anne Moss, David Bowie, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharlto Copley, Laurence Fishburne, Anne Hathaway, Donald Sutherland, Dennis Quaid like their unique contributions to movies I think Alan also adds something special to those strange roles.

If you didn't know or had totally forgotten that Nicolas Cage put out a movie called The Surfer earlier this year, then I apologize to you for reminding you of it now.

I think I'm quickly falling out of love with the idea of Cage. That's something like three bad Cage flicks in a row now that I've watched, and I'd put this one up there somewhere VERY high on the list of worst movies I've ever seen in my life. Quite possibly, even giving it the crown.

It's nothing at all like Nobody, which is what I thought I'd be getting into with this one based on the blurb and Nic Cage.

MINOR SPOILERS: (Although, seriously, do not watch this crap)...

If you're predisposed to depression, or currently in the middle of a bout with it, everything I said goes double. You will not walk away from this movie feeling good about what you just watched no matter what mood you went into when you started it up. No light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how much you're hoping for one, and no real kick ass action that turns any of this around by the end either.

All you're getting here is a half-assed, totally-ambiguous redemption(?) arc in the 11th hour and 59th minute that leaves you not giving a single shit about what happens after they say "Fuck You" with that end title screen card when they did, and depending on how big your cynical side is, a good idea that there was ZERO redemption arc that ever took place.

Fuck all the bad guys. Fuck Cage's character along with his 4-line son's non-personality robot of a character and his exe's character who we never see on screen either, and are given no reason at all to cheer for. Outside of the very small chance that his whiny rich son who doesn't get anywhere near enough screen time to make you care enough to know more about him or to even bother remembering his name by the time it pops up in the end credits, the only (presumably) decent people in this movie come out of it worse than they went into it.

Not only that, but I called how the ending of this flick was going to play out only halfway in because the several instances of foreshadowing they put out there are so on the fucking nose that only the dumbest of people will have not figured it out at least by the end of the 2nd act. And at least no less than 6 major plot points were easy to predict long before they manifested themselves. By 1 hour in, I was laughing at every single thing that happened the rest of the movie because treating it like a comedy was the only way to make it to the end.

I think that the 80+ Critic score this one has is upper-middle class white college "educated" folk celebrating the downfall of an actual rich dude, while completely ignoring the fact that he still kind of wins in the end, even if he left part of his soul behind to do it, and that he most likely sold his own son's soul down the road long after the credits roll. Not only don't we care, but we are given absolutely no reason at all to believe that won't be exactly how this story would play out in a theoretical sequel.

Not to mention the entire waste of a life he's had to get to this terrible, terrible point, including a failed marriage which he may or may not get back now depending on how materialistic his soon-to-be Ex Wife is, and just generally regretting everything he's done and the choices he's made to get something that by the end of the movie he should have, but didn't, learn that he wants no real part of.

If you want to see what Sandra Bullock's "The Net", Kevin Kostner's "Tin Cup" and The Karate Kid would look like all mashed up in a blender, every ounce of comedy, levity and hope were completely stripped away, to be replaced with a relentless sense of somebody else being peer pressured while voluntarily burdening yourself with the terrible weight of somebody else's guilt and regrets of how they lived their own lives by sitting 5 minutes through this shit, and every character in t

Odd though... I was always under the impression it was a Joint venture between him and his wife. I thought they at least co-directed it if they didn't also co-write it. I don't see her credited on IMDB right now. Going to look into that a little deeper since I'm interested. I see he's had quite a few other movies that could be interesting given that Ink is probably my favorite flick.

Now don't go expecting perfection. I hate it when I over-hype something and other people are underwhelmed. It may or may not be my favorite movie now, that's such a hard thing to really say. But I will say that for at least 6 months after I first saw it I knew that it was.

Just go into it with an open mind when you see it, and be impressed by what an extremely small budget can accomplish if talented and disciplined people are in charge of the money.

There is a lot of good stuff with Nick Cage his brief appearance in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Raising Arizona he's the star, Leaving Las Vegas dark bleak, Con Air strange wild its action and funny, Face Off is very good but it also starts to go to crap...Gone in 60 Seconds, The Wicker Man remake is dumb...its quantity not quality

Nicolas Cage is gone that whole hollyweird odd, weird, nutty route and I think he went on that journey long ago, I respect his early stuff but then I started getting put off by his films. Performances that burn or just rub you the wrong way, some performances were 'Just Wingin' It' to pay bills, divorce expenses, Bizarre Facts, not inept or incompetent but all his expenses, he bought a masonic Pyramid Tomb, naming kids after comicbooks, after taking mushrooms his cat was his brother, A Haunted Death Mansion...that was supposed to help him wrote books but this never happened...he just ran out of the Mansion screaming one night, expensive wine collections and crazy quirks and antics were costing 'The Art'. He seems to be paying off all these new young Korean or Japanese wives with costly divorces, even during his normal days I think he was 'out there' Brooke Shields seemed less than normal and he was known for an excessive party guy with booze and substance abuse.

He's made a lot of poor decisions, sure, but he owns up to them. He had every right at one point to file for Bankruptcy, but he never did that. He just went back to work and took literally any role he was offered to dig himself out of all that debt.

Gotta give him respect for that.

I liked Willy's Wonderland. It wouldn't even be watchable without him in it, and the fact that he doesn't say a single word in the whole movie is a good gimmick for him.

The Color Purple was Okay. I didn't realize it was an H.P. Lovecraft movie until after my dad and I started watching it and when his name popped up I had to pause the movie and apologize ahead of time that it probably wasn't going to be very good. I'd say it's better than your average Lovecraft movie, but still not very good. Another movie that would have been terrible had Cage not been in it, but the movie itself was so crazy that it overshadowed Nic's crazy acting.

I can't even remember the name of the one where he was showing up in people's dreams now. That one had so much potential, but the last 15 minutes were terrible and the ending sucked hard.

And then there's The Surfer. God awful movie that nobody should ever watch.
