Hey Jaynez. Are you aware of any program that could take a bunch of audio files that would analyze the volume of those files, and then adjust those that need to be adjusted to fit whatever level of volume you desire them all to be set at?

My first problem when trying to do something like this is probably not using the correct terminology. "Normalize" doesn't appear to be what I actually want to be doing here, although it is intuitively the word I would use to describe what I want.

Changing the "Gain" essentially does the most important part, which is to adjust the volume of the file without actually editing peaks out or things like that. But I can't appear to find any program that allow me to set a desired volume level and then just run the files through it for auto-adjustment to whatever peak I want for the whole batch.

I can mass adjust Gain, but that doesn't help anything. That just turns the volume up or down on all the files the same amount and I still end up with the same problem... just louder or softer overall. The ones that were too soft before are even softer and the ones that were just right are now too low, or vice versa.

I've got a mix of files here. Apparently they're all between 81 and 94 dB +/- or something like that, where 89 would be the desire "target" supposedly. That was all figured out by analysis by a program that was able to get me that far, but then didn't actually do any adjustments to the files themselves when it claimed it does. After I did that analysis, I did listen to those files and with my untrained ear I'd say that it did a pretty good assessment there for the overall volume in relation to each other and what numbers it spit out on the analysis.

So I was bummed when doing a trial run to see if 89 was just right or if I should try it again lower or higher from there, that it did absolutely nothing.

Several programs, including Audacity, can easily change the gain, but they use a different form of measurement it seems, so those numbers I got from the other program have been meaningless so far. And as far as I can tell they don't posses any way to do it all in bulk even if they did feature that comparative analysis before doing a batch process.

I'm not looking for anything close to Wings of Redemption perfection on this. But I've got something I'd been putzing around with that has a lot of different audio files and it just has an amateurish feeling to it with the volume variances between some of the tracks. Could be days of messing around with this by hand saved if I had an automatic solution for it.

Free without piracy would be preferable, although if you find something you think that would work that's looking for a small donation I might be inclined. I'm not looking to spend any real money on a pro tool suite here.

No worries if you got no clue. Just figured I'd throw it out there.

What you hear as 'Loud' can be kind of relative or subjective depending on what youre used to your culture or what noise and damage your ears have been hit with over the years, what styles of music you are into but you should be able to pick out what section of the acoustic-spectrum is 'loud' to your ears, what part of the orchestra or what electronic instrument is too loud.

Do you know what is in the track? is it a Bass guitar, a Flute or Clarinet, an artificial Kick Drum and Artificial Snare Drum,
Can you recognize the instrumentation, does it have a male voice or flame voice? Does it use a real life Types of Drum Cymbals or is it using Samples of other guys hitting a Cymbal. Does it have an Acoustic Guitar or Electric Guitar? Does it have a bunch of Keyboard Synth Video Game type sample sounds?

If its a software file or midi then you might be able to open the track and see all different instruments in all the different channels getting sent into a digital Mixing console picture, its not analogue like the real life desk but an artificial mixing desk program. If it is an old school audio engineer, then he might have set up the music to have different channels just as you would have a different mic for each instrument or musician during old school gigs on a stage.

What type of files are they? Because the human ear can sometimes hear as high as 22,050 hz a good audio needs to sampled 44,100 times per second, to copy the real life highest peak part of the audio wave is called the crest and the lowest part is called the trough.
If the tune is already 'mixed' into a blend of music, flac or wav will be better than 'mp3' methods used to compress audio into mp3 can create a lot of metal thin sounding noisy buzz

once you get used to a DAW, the Digitail Audio Workstation can work with other 'plug-in' or apps, companies that sell plug ins to other software in alliance of bundles that work with other computers and software. They can have their own keyboard plug-ins, Guitar Fx, Reverb and Delay and artificial software 'Pedals' that act as real life Pedals on a Stage etc

Wow man. I feel bad because that's probably way more information than I need, but I did say I didn't need Wings of Pegasus levels of perfection here.

mp3gain is close to what I was looking for. It purports to do what I want it to do, but it fails at the job. The problem is that it is hit or miss. It seems to do a good job, until it blatantly doesn't. Not at all reliable, and since there's very little that the end user can do or adjust under the hood, it is what it is.

I ended up spending a little while with all the files in a program called Ocenaudio and kind of did my best to do it by ear. It's a program similar to Audacity, but you're able to load up an entire folder of audio files in bulk and play them all along right together, while doing things easily like setting the beginning point for comparison wherever you'd like, so I always choose to start previews of the changes at the high points.

I did decent, but now that I have more experience I'm going to start over from scratch and do it again. These all need to sound good in relation to each other, but they also need to more or less match 2 other sets of things, where only one of which is slightly under my control and the other that I can't control is what all the volume adjustments need to be made around. And since I forgot to test for that first and did not lower the files I was working on nearly enough in tandem with each other while I was doing it manually, I don't trust it to auto correct all of them down properly now, so I'll just do it again a 2nd time. Should go quite a bit quicker, I would imagine.

Like I said, I don't need perfection here, but I don't want to be causing any easily avoidable jump scares either.

You asked about quality. They're all mp3 files but were from high quality originals and sound as good as I need them to sound as is.

I figured I'd mention something I found interesting to you. This "editing" that I've been doing to these files isn't really any actual altering of the original sound data as it was recorded. I'm not sure if, or how many other audio file formats/compressions out there make extensive use of metadata tags and support this, but these bulk gain programs are just altering the volume metadata for the mp3 file.

I haven't seen it explicitly stated and I always keep backup copies before messing around with something like this anyway, but that leads me to believe that even though these files are compressed to hell already I'm not actually further degrading them with any editing I'm doing and it's all fully reversible or easily changeable to somewhere in between for further testing.

I can probably beat on them pretty good and then just revert them back to square one if I wanted to start over again from scratch without needing to start with a fresh copy from the backup set.

This is what I would call a professional mix, everything at the right levels all samples and sound channels done correct
but that's not a comment on how good the actual 'song' is for a tv show

IMO it was almost there as a 'song', just needed a little work, it just needed a child like catchy melodic jingle, a 'Hook' or Motif or Lyric to make it stand out a little more

Man... Does this site just CRAWL for everyone now, or is it just me?

Started getting bad a month or two ago but it takes ages some times for pages to load now. Just getting them started sometimes. They'll just hang after you click a link for minutes sometimes. Then when you get 'em to load, if there are youtube videos up and down the page like there are in this thread, good luck ever getting them all to load up so you can see the most recent ones.

Oh... BTW...

I was able to fix my issues with the tools I mentioned above, Jaynez. It's not a studio perfect solution by any means, but I've still got a good ear and it all sounds about right to me now. There is nothing close to any jump scares going on anymore if somebody were to be wearing headphones with the volume up.

It turned out there were still one or two other variables that were out of my control that I wasn't aware of too, but they are off on the periphery and I was able to figure out a way to jerry rig it outside of the way it was coded to "fix" those too... Although Fix is probably giving it too much credit because if something else that is very likely to be altered/upgraded by somebody in the future were to be without also re-implementing my "fix", that part would be broke again until somebody tripped over it and fixed it again. Oh well.

So between any aspect the volume is all more or less even. And if somebody did ever want to further tweak it in certain parts, I'm leaving these new shortcuts I've made in place while synchronizing other things up, and doing my best to make all the shortcuts for volume controls identical across the board too, both on a global and lesser scales. Although the global should be great as-is and only be controlled now by the audio output source that the end-user is listening through. If anything, I was cautious and kept the global level on the softer than TV/Streaming side of things, but even with my ancient tech I can easily get everything loud enough on my end to be beyond annoying to me without blowing any speakers out.

MP3Gain, and whatever the name of the other program I mentioned work pretty great together for regulating volume once you get used to how they both work. A pretty simple solution to just get a group of MP3s that you have much closer to the same level than any pool of them you ever listen to likely are unless you've already taken time to tweak that yourself.

I know if I ever get around to putting my newer car stereo with the USB for the MP3 stick installed in the new car, I'll be doing this all over again with them too. It's not an automatic solution and that would be a project for sure, but it's a worthwhile one.

There's always been a certain type of song that I've always been drawn to, often times without me even realizing it for years. This is one that I posted here a few summers ago when I'd heard it while working out in the garage. It's since been on my rotation, but as amazing as Brandi Carlile's voice is, there are a LOT of lyrics that I never understood and didn't even do a great job filling in no matter how many times I listened to it.

But something told me that I needed to look at the lyrics tonight...

Something is happening. A sense of clarity that I never felt before. Maybe all I needed was nearly a decade of sobriety under my belt to finally achieve it.

For some reason, maybe on a subconscious level, I just knew that I had perfect understanding of this song today when I heard it while doing yardwork outside, even though I still didn't know more than half of the words to it until tonight.

And now that I've learned them, aside from her speaking for herself as a Woman, it may as well be my song. It wasn't a song about being broken. It was a song about being reborn. It's not a song about running. It's a song about running free, and no longer being tethered by outside forces that don't matter and hold no power over you anymore. And the only running you NEED to be doing anymore unless you feel like running is away from the grip of the narcissists and the manipulators. Until you finish mending up those fences and build up that perimeter where you no longer even need to run for any reason unless you feel like it.

No religion or self-help books or pills or group therapy required. An honest awakening.

Similarly, I would suspect, this is how Lauren Hill felt when she wrote "Killing me Softly" about the young man singing her life with his words...

I understand every single word, and it may resonate with me more than any other song I've ever felt before. I only wish there were more of it. I should listen to the whole album.

This was a woman who's been to hell and back and finally learned to trust herself. And I'll bet in real life she's one hell of a lady for it now.

To note, this is why I get pissed off when you hear people talking about cultural appropriation...

I didn't even know that this was a black dude when I first heard it on the radio a few years ago when coming back from helping my friend working on his house and he told me who did it. I was looking for lyrics and saw an article about the lead singer and songwriter Abel, who was born in the 90's and grew up in Canada, was a huge fan of 80's music. I don't get the idea that most of his music is anything like this one, but it was like his love letter to that decade of music.

80's pop was decidedly an almost exclusively white phenomena, with early MTV in there too. It really wasn't until "Yo MTV Raps" came on that black music from the 90's started moving from "the hood" to the mainstream.

But how the hell could anyone hate on somebody for putting out an 80's banger like this when it's so good. My world is just a little better with this song in it.

I usually listen from the botom up Cello, groove, Bass line so I dont really take notice of vocalists unless they actually can write lyrics for example Bob Dylan or they put on an energetic performance Tina Turner for example. Or the person is at the top of the game 'Opera' for example but I'm not into Opera I just respect the training and skill involved and ....song and dance folk songs? another I might the groove or phrasing of songs, Samba Forró Rumba Portuguese vocal dance songs the Gypsy Spanish Caribbean Salsa dance vocals, the Balkan folk dance vocals or Hindi India Hindu dance songs I try to catch all sounds not just 'words' all instrumentation so at times the vocalist almost doesnt exist, the vocals usually just annoy me being out of time and out of tune or just boring and put to the grid like a machine, everything in auto tune

vocals are just one of many instruments, the human voice instrument so in the larger wall of sound they mostly dont exist

I do respect some vocals the American-born Italian-Greek soprano, Italian operatic tenor, French-American operatic soprano and actress ...it wasnt all Metropolitan Opera in New York City, they sometimes did tv or movies or radio, the Ed Sullivan show, the Welsh or Russian or Spainish or Canadian baritone, the mixed Maori and European woman who is allowed to be a NZ 'Diva' moving from pop to Classical, growing up in a poor remote corner of New Zealand, and ended up one of the world’s most famous opera singers. I respect the people who do incredible work and training for their voice and are allowed have 'attitude' because they have done so much work in life.
I'm not an elite-ish guy not an elitist I do like some simple Country Blues the Pop Folk song or one with Bluegrass roots, I like some pop or world music folk songs or blues or rock or whatever but I can't understand why some very mediocre vocalists are pushed out there, completely over-rated and worshipped by zombies masses that just consume the garbage of radio pop.

I rarely take notice of vocals, most vocalists I find annoying. I might strum a guitar, hitting some bangs some beats on a drum, play a bassline or play some chords with groove on piano, I usually listen out to harmonize with 'The Band' the beats and subdivisions catch the pulse and drive and have fun with the rhythm section....there really isn't anything interesting in that song.

I remember 'Fugees' funk and hip-hop but completely overplayed....some stuff I would hear a lot and depending what part of the world you might be in you could hear stuff like Enigma, an Aussie pop band, a K-pop band or whatever the local radios of the cities would play. You would hear Queen or old US Blues Jazz or some Beatles or some cliche Classical Music Orchestra song and I still would not get tired of it but 'Fugees' was boring and tiresome

I don't know if it was on a soundtrack. I only heard it on the radio that one time and I think it was years after it had come out. That was a few years ago. The real music video is around 5 minutes, but has an annoying part that the music just stops and they're doing some video shit in the middle. The real radio song is probably only like 3.5 minutes long. That was a 20 minute loop, and actually not a very good one because you can totally tell where they looped it. I've done much better loops of my own before.

Yeah. It's a jam. I'm not much of a dancer, but I can groove to this one.

everyone is talking KPop Demon Hunters, I have not seen, might avoid it. Something strange has happened the musical, they used to be able to do them well but now they can rank among the worst movies ever made, the assraped Joker Folie à Deux
so maybe I should make a list of Musical film I tolerate, stage theater puppet disney type film music stuff and Music Movies that I 'tolerate'...some site uploaded the new 'Wicked' I couldnt watch it at all...seemed like garbage

'The Muppet Movie' was good
all the old 1930s era Fred Astaire you had all these real dancers post silent era cinema, it was just great performance. Black, White doing their incredible rhythm stuff from the era of Jazz and the Charleston dance. The Golden Age was incredible, no CGI, they often had to do it all in one take, Singin' in the Rain would be there. 50s and 60s was still there post War Golden Age Mary Poppins 1960s, you had international flavors the French Cancan, Westside Story...there were also a lot of Slavic Arab Orthodox Eastern Arabic influential films until the Soviets and Jihad islamos started taking over and banning stuff, Russian East Europeans breaking out into song and dance before Communists shut it all. 'Days and Nights' would be one, I think its Egyptian actors or French Arabic a look into a more Western looking Arab culture before it all shut down.
I might put Hong Kong Nocturne there its like a silly version of Beatles Hard Days Night, Austin Powers or The Monkees but set in Asia. ¡Ay Carmela! could be on the List the closing months of the Spanish Civil War, but I guess you could put any number of Brazil Hispanic Latin American dance movies on the list.
maybe Rocky Horror Would be on 'The List' its so weird funny creepy and 'out there' with its outlandish nutty scenes!

I guess Purple Rain might be there on that creepy disturbing European flick 'Dancer in the Dark'
The Doors 1991 was well done and Ray a 2004 biographical drama film focusing on musician Ray Charles...perhaps comedy 'Top Secret!' was better?
maybe O Brother, Where Art Thou? does that qualify as a musical. A lot of people praise the Japan anime Blue Giant.
The Phantom of the Opera, Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson I think there's a lot of post-processing and studio vocals and genius work of musicians and Andrew Lloyd Webber 'magic' and edits to get those vocals sounding the way they do.

I might throw in the British comedy troupe Monty Python before Britain went Soviet-Jihad Orweliian and took offense to everything.

Maybe spoofs like 'Top Secret!'would be included afterall movies are entertainment? This Is Spinal Tap, Walk Hard The Dewey Cox Story a spoof of Johnny Cash, Ray Charles and careers of other notable musicians including Roy Orbison, Glen Campbell.

Would you include animation in the list or movies that are less musical and more 'movie' but maybe with an iconic 'musical' scene.
'The Blues Brothers' was a blast, hilarious film
I enjoyed most India Bollywood stuff but I dont watch much of it.
then there are lists of stuff I have yet to watch 'True Stories' by David Byrne is supposed to be pretty good but I never seen it, I never seen Little Shop Of Horrors I know it might be a musical Ive seen clips with Steve Martin, Bill Murray I dont know if the original was also a musical? Lagaan Once Upon a Time in India is another people talked of online but I never seen it and La La Land another I have yet to see but some people loved it.

If you liked the first one, you should watch the 2nd one at least once. Been ages since I've seen The Muppet Movie, but that's another one my grandma had on Laserdisc when her sister died and gave her the player and about 500 movies with it. I like the Kermit/Rainbow song. It's been so long since I've seen that movie that I don't even remember any other songs from it or how much of the runtime was songs.

I'd never watch Mary Poppins today, but I saw it once or twice with my mom when I was little. I didn't hate it. Never seen any of the others there.

Rocky Horror is crazy. Not something I would go out of my way to see. I think the only way I'd ever watch that again is if my brother and his friends went to one of those weekend theater showings or something, just to see how crazy the crowd acts and to stand out like a sore thumb because you wouldn't catch me dead dressing up like they do. Say what you want about Susan Serandon, but she looked amazing in that flick in her knickers.

I just hope that if AI is the future of music, it makes happy music.

I think that is one of our biggest problems as a society right now. The music is objectively horrible for the most part. What isn't nihilistic is violent. What isn't violent or nihilistic is degrading against women or glorifying gang violence (as modern rap went mainstream).

You turned on the radio in the 80's and a good deal of the 90's and it put you in a good mood. You turn on the radio today and it's mostly a depressing experience.

I could think of at least 5 or 6 other threads you've pulled up from the void that it would also fit into, and I didn't remember what thread specifically you posted it in. That's the problem when we show up one day and see that the last 4 pages of threads were all dredged up in the previous 2 days.

Now... instead of only having to look at maybe a dozen or two threads by title to see a topic that had been brought up in the last day or two that I was interested in or posted in is there for me to make another reply, I've got to go through 2 to 4 pages depending on how big of a bender you were on that week.

There is 50 threads per page man. And there's not much worse than having to scroll through them and bring up topic after topic after topic after topic in alternate tabs and wait on this slow ass website to let me get to the last page and check out the last few posts before closing that window out and trying it all over again with a new batch of threads you might have posted it in.

If this site had a search function it would be a different story. Years ago I used to be able to search for anything I wanted here using some minor code in Google's search engine query, but they stopped allowing you to do that years ago. The function is still technically there, but it used to be 99.9% accurate on anything I was trying to find, but now it's basically useless.

I get pissed off easily by annoying behavior and maybe I say shit that I shouldn't, and I should empathize more with other people. I don't know why you do it to the extent that you do. I think if you pared it down to eliminate the trivial stuff it is actually historically beneficial.

But man... what you do here is like a serious pet peeve of mine that I didn't even know existed until you created it. I like you, and still you annoy me more with this behavior than the two idiots on these boards annoy me with their chronic TDS brain trauma combined.

I know I had a few friends who were into indie music and listened to them when I was in High School. I think I may have heard of them from time to time on the local Alternative Rock radio station around that time too.

They never made it big, but had a pretty die-hard fan base all these years.

When I'd first heard The Getaway on the radio 3 or so summers ago while out working in the garage I loved it. Never bothered looking into any of their other music, but that one is really damn good.

I do believe I read in the comments for that video that one of the members died shortly after that video was released.
