Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered hundreds of the U.S. military’s generals and admirals to gather on short notice — and without a stated reason — at a Marine Corps base in Virginia next week, sowing confusion and alarm after the Trump administration’s firing of numerous senior leaders this year.
The highly unusual directive was sent to virtually all of the military’s top commanders worldwide, according to more than a dozen people familiar with the matter. The directive was issued earlier this week, as a government shutdown looms, and months after Hegseth’s team at the Pentagon announced plans to undertake a sweeping consolidation of top military commands.
In a statement Thursday, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell affirmed that Hegseth “will be addressing his senior military leaders early next week,” but he offered no additional details. Parnell, a senior adviser to the defense secretary, voiced no concerns about The Washington Post reporting on the meeting, scheduled for Tuesday in Quantico, Virginia.
There are about 800 generals and admirals spread across the United States and dozens of other countries and time zones. Hegseth’s order, people familiar with the matter said, applies to all senior officers with the rank of brigadier general or above, or their Navy equivalent, serving in command positions and their top enlisted advisers. Typically, these officers each oversee hundreds or thousands of rank-and-file troops.
Top commanders in conflict zones and senior military leaders stationed throughout Europe, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region are among those expected to attend Hegseth’s meeting, said people familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to publicly discuss the issue. The order does not apply to top military officers who hold staff positions.
None of the people who spoke with The Post could recall a defense secretary ever ordering so many of the military’s generals and admirals to assemble like this. Several said it raised security concerns.
“People are very concerned. They have no idea what it means,” one person said.
Two others expressed frustration that even many commanders stationed overseas will be required to attend. One said, this is “not how this is done.”
“You don’t call GOFOs leading their people and the global force into an auditorium outside D.C. and not tell them why/what the topic or agenda is,” this person said, using an abbreviation for general officer or flag officer.
“Are we taking every general and flag officer out of the Pacific right now?” one U.S. official said. “All of it is weird.”
The orders come as Hegseth has unilaterally directed massive recent changes at the Pentagon — including directing that the number of general officers be reduced by 20 percent, firing senior leaders without cause and a high-profile new order to rebrand the Defense Department as the Department of War.
Top administration officials also have preparing a new national defense strategy that is expected to make homeland defense the nation’s top concern, after several years of China being identified as the top national security risk to the United States. Some officials familiar with the order to travel said they thought that may come up.

Hundreds of generals and admirals have been ordered to Virginia in the coming days, according to four defense officials who spoke to The Intercept on the condition of anonymity. The conclave of general and flag officers is unprecedented and alarming, the sources said.
The officials said that the military’s top brass were, on Wednesday, instructed to report to a Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, on or around September 30 to meet with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. Two sources believed that the timing was pegged to the potential government shutdown.
The officials were unsure of the exact reasons behind the extraordinary order. They speculated about the purpose, wondering if it might foretell:
a culling of general officers;
a significant reorganization of the military command structure;
a threat to eschew contact with the press; or
a loyalty oath about putting Trump administration priorities above all else.
One source, somewhat in jest, evoked the phrase “coup d’état,” later clarifying they meant a gutting of leaders who might question Trump’s policies.
“It is beyond highly irregular to have all the operational and command GOFOs tasked to fly to DC and also not tell any of them why,” said one of the officials, using military shorthand for general and flag officers. “To say the military leadership is anxious would be an understatement.”
“The Secretary of War will be addressing his senior military leaders early next week,” chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell told The Intercept when asked about the fears expressed by the officials.
Most of the military’s top officers — those with the rank of brigadier general or above, or their naval equivalent — are required to attend, the officials said. They said that even top brass in conflict zones and forward areas are among those ordered to the meeting. One official told The Intercept that the order was “madness” and unlike any order in living memory “or probably ever.” Another said that calling home generals and admirals from front-line stations was “reckless” but in keeping with the Trump administration’s efforts to keep the top echelons of the officer corps on a tight leash.

My historian colleagues might correct me, but I do not think anyone at least in recent history has done what Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is about to do: put all of the American generals and admirals from around the world into a single room (next week, in Virginia) just to say something to them.
There is no practical reason to do this: he has easier and more secure ways to communicate with the commanders. And there are obvious risks: the entire armed forces of the United States, spread around the world, will be without its leaders. Given that the government could well shut down the next day, the separation of commanders from their command might be indefinite.
And if Hegseth has his way, those generals and admirals will all be in one site, announced in advance, which means that the entirety of the American command structure will be more vulnerable, physically, than in any conceivable military scenario, including nuclear war. There is no scenario other than this one in which they would all be in the same place at the same time.
So why might Secretary Hegseth do such an extraordinary thing? Only four solutions to the puzzle come to mind.
1. He has some trivial thing to say and does not understand the risks.
2. He wishes to endanger the lives of the generals and admirals.
3. He will stage a purge, perhaps involving a loyalty oath or something similar that requires personal presence.
4. He will tell the commanders that henceforth their assignment will be to oppress American citizens (“homeland defense”). This could be combined with the third scenario: those who refuse will be fired.
Perhaps others can think of other possibilities, but I am afraid that I cannot.
One might wonder why no effort was made to keep this secret. Perhaps Hegseth wants the senior officers to worry. Perhaps the news was shared because reasonable people in the Pentagon fear that the meeting is part of a plan to remake the American military as a domestic political police force. This would be in conjunction with other efforts, such as yesterday’s terror memo https://snyder.substack.com/p/trumps-terror-memo-audio to pursue regime change in the United States. Making known that there will be such a meeting is the one way to begin a conversation that might prevent its taking place, or at least alter its purpose.
PS News outlets: please do not publish heroic portraits of Hegseth or of others in connections with articles about this and related subjects. Doing so undermines reporting and naturalizes the transition to authoritarianism.

Not since America's founding 250 years ago has a U.S. president expanded power — and punished critics — in more unprecedented ways than Donald J. Trump.
1. Executive power: Trump has declared nine national emergencies in his first eight months in office, stretching the definition of "emergency" in creative and aggressive ways.
• Historical analogy: Since 1980, presidents have declared an average of seven in a four-year term. Trump's 200+ executive orders fall far short of the thousands issued by FDR (a wartime president elected to four terms), but Trump's pace—142 in his first 100 days—is the highest on record.
• New precedent: Future presidents can use loosely defined "emergencies" as a routine tool to bypass Congress and unlock extraordinary powers governing trade, immigration, mineral extraction and foreign disputes.
2. Free-press crackdown: Trump has waged the most aggressive government campaign against mainstream media in modern U.S. history —stripping funding from public outlets, pushing the FCC to revoke broadcast licenses over negative coverage, and personally suing CBS/ Paramount, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times while in office.
• Historical analogy: No modern president has deployed such a mix of lawsuits and regulatory muscle. Even Richard Nixon, who targeted the Washington Post and CBS through the IRS and FCC, never sued multiple networks directly.
• New precedent: Future presidents can use lawsuits, regulatory threats, and funding pressure to bring independent media to heel.
3. Seizing congressional purse strings: Trump has tried to freeze or redirect billions in congressionally appropriated funds, from public health to foreign aid to university research.
• Historical analogy: The closest precedent is Nixon, who tried to "impound" funds in the early 1970s. Congress responded by passing the Impoundment Control Act of 1974—which the Trump White House claims is unconstitutional—to stop presidents from unilaterally withholding money. No president since has attempted impoundments at this scale, or with such open defiance of Congress and the courts.
• New precedent: Future presidents can treat Congress's "power of the purse" as optional, withholding or redirecting funds to pressure states, institutions or foreign governments.
4. Tariffs: Trump has effectively seized the authority over tariffs that the Constitution gives to Congress, wielding tariffs to reshape global trade and punish countries for political or economic disputes.
• Historical analogy: The last sweeping tariff shock was Smoot–Hawley, which President Hoover signed in 1930 and wound up worsening the Great Depression. Since then, presidents have used delegated powers narrowly — including President Reagan's selective tariffs on Japanese motorcycles and semiconductors in the 1980s to try to protect American manufacturing. Trump is the first to use emergency authorities to impose broad tariffs without new congressional legislation.
• New precedent: Future presidents can bypass Congress to unilaterally set tariff policy, erasing one of the legislature's core constitutional powers.
5. Overriding the Constitution: Trump issued an executive order seeking to eliminate birthright citizenship — a right guaranteed in the 14th Amendment — for the children of unauthorized immigrants.
• Historical analogy: Past constitutional showdowns have come during war or insurrection: Abraham Lincoln suspended habeas corpus in the Civil War. FDR interned Japanese Americans during World War II. In each case, presidents acted under extraordinary wartime claims of necessity. No president has ever tried to nullify a core constitutional guarantee by executive order in peacetime

Fentanyl Doesn’t Come Through the Caribbean
The White House is using the opioid epidemic to justify lethal strikes and other policies.

“Please be warned that we will blow you out of existence,” President Donald Trump said during his speech at the United Nations on Tuesday, issuing a politely phrased mortal threat to would-be drug traffickers. Already, the administration has killed 17 people—“narco-terrorists,” Trump calls them—in air strikes on three boats allegedly from Venezuela and loaded with what the president has described as “big bags of cocaine and fentanyl.”
Trump and his aides have justified the extrajudicial killings as a decisive measure to protect Americans from dangerous drugs, especially fentanyl, the synthetic opioid behind the worst overdose epidemic in U.S. history, which accelerated during his first term in office.
“We have no choice,” Trump told the United Nations General Assembly. “Each boat that we sink carries drugs that would kill more than 25,000 Americans.”
But here’s the thing: Although the United States Coast Guard interdicts staggering quantities of illegal drugs in the Caribbean each year, it does not encounter fentanyl on the high seas. South American cocaine and marijuana account for the overwhelming majority of maritime seizures, according to Coast Guard data, and there isn’t a single instance of a fentanyl seizure—let alone “bags” of the drug—in the agency’s press releases.
Last month, the U.S. cutter Hamilton returned to Florida with what the agency called “the largest quantity of drugs offloaded in Coast Guard history”: 61,740 pounds of cocaine and 14,400 pounds of marijuana (that’s the weight of about three city buses). The haul, gathered by multiple federal agencies during 19 seizure incidents in the Caribbean as well as the Pacific, had an estimated street value of $473 million. But there wasn’t any fentanyl on the boat.
Steve Roth, a Coast Guard lieutenant commander and spokesperson for the agency, wrote to me that Coast Guard crews confiscated a “historic amount of cocaine” during the 2025 fiscal year that ends this month, but no fentanyl. He offered a bank-shot rationale for Trump’s claims, arguing that other illegal drugs, such as cocaine, generate profits that “fuel and enable Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Transnational Criminal Organizations to produce and traffic illegal fentanyl threatening the U.S.”
Trump has spoken in personal terms about the devastating toll of the fentanyl crisis, and has long tied it to his efforts to fortify the southern border and crack down on immigration. Anne Fundner, the mother of a 15-year-old who overdosed from a fentanyl-laced pill, gave an emotional speech at the Republican National Convention last year, blaming her son’s death on the Biden administration’s border policies. Trump pledged to make ending the fentanyl crisis a top priority for his administration, and has cast the drug as an insidious foreign tool devised to undermine American greatness. He now invokes it as a fact-free way to justify policies with little or minimal nexus to the drug trade.
The president cited fentanyl production when he imposed tariffs on Canada, even though fewer than 0.2 percent of fentanyl seizures by U.S. Customs and Border Protection occurred along the northern border. Trump has cited fentanyl trafficking to push for hundreds of additional miles of barriers across deserts and mountains along the Mexico border, in spite of CBP data that show that more than 90 percent of U.S. seizures of the drug occur at the official crossings, or ports of entry, where couriers hide the drug in body cavities or inside vehicles.

Billions in Taxpayer Dollars Have Become Virtually Untraceable
The Trump administration’s aggressive approach to overhauling the executive branch has obscured how federal dollars are actually being spent — even for the members of Congress.
NOTUS attempted to trace the money appropriated for more than 100 government programs to understand where taxpayer dollars are going, only to hit dead ends repeatedly. Data is outdated or conflicting, agencies have been vague in their explanations, and in many cases, there’s no publicly available evidence that appropriated money is being spent at all.
The connection between Congress’ decisions and current spending should be obvious — but in many cases today, it’s obscured.
Lawmakers and their staff told NOTUS they’ve faced the same barriers.
“I don’t think that there has been anything close to the transparency that we would hope,” Sen. Lisa Murkowski said. “We’re kind of finding out about it at the very last minute.”
When asked if she felt confident that she can get the information she needs, she responded:
“No! No. I get it by reading something in the newspaper.”
Murkowski isn’t the only Republican voicing her frustrations.
The Trump administration is “really pushing the limits of what the executive can do without the consent of the legislative branch,” Appropriations Chair Susan Collins told The Wall Street Journal in July.
She escalated her language at the end of August, when the White House made clear that OMB Director Russell Vought intended to pursue a controversial method of withholding funds called a “pocket rescission.”
“Any effort to rescind appropriated funds without congressional approval is a clear violation of the law,” Collins said in a statement. “Instead of this attempt to undermine the law, the appropriate way is to identify ways to reduce excessive spending through the bipartisan, annual appropriations process.”

There will be jail sentences, but not until after Attorney General Pam Bondi is also incarcerated for her role in this bribery scheme. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi's salary is $250,600 annually. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's annual salary is $235,100. With bribes, they can vastly increase their incomes.

In a way, I’m surprised that Republicans didn’t decide to keep the enhanced, Biden subsidies in place for another year, just to delay the pain until after the midterms. But they didn’t, probably because they have such a strong aversion to helping Americans in need that they couldn’t even bring themselves to play cynical politics on the issue.
This aversion to doing anything decent is why the government will probably shut down Wednesday. For Republicans need Democratic votes to keep the government open, and Democrats have made retaining enhanced subsidies their price for cooperating.
What will happen then? I have no idea. But I think the Democrats made the right choice when they made health insurance premiums — rather than, say, tariffs — their key demand.
Why? Because doing so puts the onus for rising premiums squarely where it belongs — on Republicans. If Democrats weren’t putting this issue front and center, the usual suspects might be able to convince many voters that someone else — immigrants, Antifa, George Soros, whatever — was responsible for their soaring health costs. That will be much harder now.
Again, I have no idea how this will play out. But it looks to me as if Democrats have chosen good ground on which to make their stand.

Trump announces 100% tariff on foreign-made movies

President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post on Monday he will be imposing a 100% tariff “on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States.”
Trump did not specify when or how the tariff could be enacted.
If Trump follows through with his threat, it would mark the first time he’s essentially imposed a tariff on a service rather than a good.
The president initially threatened a 100% tariff on foreign-produced movies in May, arguing that other countries offer tax incentives that have drawn filmmakers abroad. In his post on Monday, he singled out California, saying the state “has been particularly hard hit!”
The state, meanwhile, has proposed and put in effect many tax incentives, as have other American cities.
Hollywood was completely caught off guard when Trump first previewed the tariff in May. “On first blush, it’s shocking and would represent a virtually complete halt of production,” one industry insider told CNN at the time. “But in reality, he has no jurisdiction to do this and it’s too complex to enforce.”
American actors and directors generally prefer to work close to home. But “the fact is, it’s cheaper for Hollywood studios to pay for everyone to get on planes, pay for hotels, because the cost of labor, lack of rebates and the ability to make things overseas is infinitely cheaper,” Jay Sures, vice chairman of United Talent Agency, told CNN in May.
Share of Netflix (NFLX) opened down 1% Monday morning following Trump’s post, while other movie-related companies, including AMC (AMC) and The Walt Disney Company (DIS), opened higher.
Movie ticket sales are down in the United States as the number of major releases hitting theaters has tumbled since the pandemic — and consumers have shifted their viewing habits to streaming platforms to watch at home.
US box office gross topped out at just under $12 billion in 2018 before nosediving to just over $2 billion in 2020, when many theaters were shut down because of Covid. Although theaters have rebounded, the number of releases is about half of what it was in 2019. The total domestic box office gross hasn’t eclipsed $9 billion since.
Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company, has raked in $4 billion in global box office sales so far this year, the first studio to hit that level.
More tariffs in the works
Beyond films, Trump is readying up a slew of other tariffs.
As of Wednesday, the administration is set to impose a 100% tariff on branded drugs, with some exceptions; a 25% tariff on heavy trucks; a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets and vanities; as well as a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture.
In a separate social media post on Monday, Trump said he plans to impose a “substantial” tariff on all furniture imported into the United States.

A possible U.S. government shutdown on Wednesday could hinge on a deal to maintain a tax credit that helps 22 million Americans lower their health insurance costs when they buy policies through the Affordable Care Act's marketplaces.
Known as the enhanced premium tax credit, the subsidy has been used by millions of low- and middle-class households since it was authorized under the American Rescue Plan Act in 2021. Since then, spurred by the tax credit, the number of people who have enrolled in ACA marketplace health insurance plans has almost doubled, according to health care publication KFF.
But it is set to expire at the end of 2025, and leading Democratic lawmakers are making a funding deal to keep the government open contingent on Republicans agreeing to extend the credit.
Even as the outcome of the funding negotiations in Washington, D.C., remains uncertain, the expiration of the premium health care credits could inflict financial pain on millions of Americans, experts told CBS News.
"Insurers are already preparing to send notices to households that they will see increases starting in January 2026," said Alex Jacquez, chief of policy at Groundwork Collaborative, a liberal economic advocacy group, and a former White House economic official under former President Joe Biden, on a conference call Friday to discuss the tax credit.
He added, "People are more and more concerned about the cost of living, and [this is] a hit to their pocketbooks that they will start seeing in weeks."
The White House didn't respond to a request for comment.

Before a gathering of the nation’s highest-ranking military officers, President Donald Trump unloaded what may be the most repellent, unhinged, and—in the few moments when he got to his point—frightening speeches by any American president ever.
In a 75-minute ramble, much of it improvised on the familiar themes of his campaign rallies, the commander in chief skewered Joe Biden (“this guy who had no clue”), even Biden’s autopen signature (“I love my signature, everybody loves my signature,” he boasted), the “sleazebags” in the “fake media,” George Soros, the Democratic Party (“they don’t treat you with respect, they’re Democrats, they never do”), several “stupid” Democratic mayors—and touted himself as the savior of the military and the nation (“I rebuilt the military. … I have settled so many wars. … I know more about deals than anybody”).
One can imagine what was going through the minds of the hundreds of generals and admirals, who had once saluted Biden and Obama as their commanders, who had come up through the ranks with an apolitical ethos, and who must have been at that moment wondering what kinds of orders they might have to follow—or consider not following—from this crude man who now has the attack plans and nuclear codes at his side.
Beneath the incoherent swagger and insults, Trump sent a clear message about the sorts of orders he’d soon be handing down, and that couldn’t have been reassuring. The military’s main task in the near future, he said, would be to defeat “the enemy from within”—the criminals, terrorists, and immigrants whom he claimed are ravaging American cities (even though, in most of those cities, crime rates are falling).
This is an “invasion from within,” he said several times, “no different from a foreign army.” And dealing with this enemy will become one of the military’s top priorities.
The National Guard, he claimed, had transformed the District of Columbia, which he said had been more dangerous than any place in Afghanistan (this to officers who had fought in Afghanistan), into a crimeless haven. Chicago and Portland come next. And, oh, he said, “we haven’t even started yet.” With his executive order to create a “quick reaction force” to stop civil disorder, our cities can now be used as a military “training ground.”
And on that training ground, he proclaimed, the gloves should come off. During the Biden administration, he said, street protesters would spit at police, and National Guard members just stood there and took it. No longer. His slogan: “They spit, we hit—is that OK?” The generals and admirals sat silent.
Trump’s monologue followed a speech by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who had ordered the generals and admirals to gather at the Marine base in Virginia from their stations all over the world—at a cost of millions of dollars for transportation—to hear what some had billed as a pep talk about the Pentagon’s new embrace of “warrior ethos.”

Yesterday evening, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social and then reposted on X an AI-generated video showing House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries wearing a sombrero and a mustache and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer speaking in a fake voice.
In the video, the AI-generated Schumer argues for undocumented immigrants to get “free healthcare” so Democrats can get their votes in the next election. Jeffries is depicted ostensibly as a Mexican immigrant who would benefit from that healthcare.

Jeffries and Schumer showed impressive discipline in their responses a few minutes later. The Democrats’ approach to the government shutdown slated to start at midnight tonight is: 1) focus on the issue of healthcare, and 2) demonstrate a willingness to talk, even as Republicans aren’t. And so Jeffries wrote on X, “Bigotry will get you nowhere. Cancel the Cuts. Lower the Cost. Save Healthcare. We are NOT backing down.” Schumer followed, “If you think your shutdown is a joke, it just proves what we all know: You can’t negotiate. You can only throw tantrums.”
The Democrats’ message isn’t quite the one I’d prefer, and their leaders’ tone is too mild for my taste. But ultimately I have no important quarrel with how Jeffries and Schumer handled the moment. There was probably no reason for them to be justifiably indignant and angry—though I would be. And I suppose there was no need to tell the truth about what this latest glimpse into Donald J. Trump’s character reveals—after all, we’ve seen countless exhibits of this before. Doing so would presumably have generated media stories about both sides hurling charges at each other. It might have been a distraction. It’s perhaps what Trump wanted.
But I do feel, both for the sake of political hygiene and the historical record, that someone should tell the simple truth: Donald Trump is a vulgar bigot and a reprehensible human being. He is unworthy to serve in any high office in this country, let alone its highest. Just because he’s acted this way before doesn’t mean we should let it go unremarked upon. If anything, it makes the obligation to call him out in these moments that much greater.
At some point, Republicans will have to face up to the fact that they have nominated this lowlife three times for president, and that their party continues to slavishly support him. Democrats will have to face up to the fact that they have twice failed to defeat him. Americans will have to face up to the fact that we have twice elected this man as president, and that far too many of us are still not repulsed by him.
It would be good if that point came sooner rather than later.

Donald Trump Will Never Be a Restrainer

The idea of U.S. foreign-policy restraint emerged in opposition to the grand strategy of liberal hegemony, which sought to use American power to spread democracy, markets, the rule of law, and other liberal values around the world, and to bring as many states as possible into institutions dominated by the United States. Restrainers believe that trying to spread democracy with military force is a fool’s errand, and that threatening or bullying other states usually backfires, making adversaries more suspicious and turning allies or neutrals into enemies. For this reason, they believe diplomacy should be America’s first impulse and the use of force its last resort. They are neither isolationists nor pacifists, because they believe that the United States has an interest in helping maintain favorable balances of power in key regions, that allies are useful but should pull their weight, that force is sometimes necessary to defend vital interests, and that well-designed international institutions can facilitate cooperation even as states compete. And while restrainers recognize that the world can be a dangerous place and that the United States has serious conflicts of interest with some countries, they oppose the relentless threat inflation used to justify excessive U.S. military spending and the overuse of force abroad.
Restrainers do not agree on every issue—for example, some favor confronting China more vigorously while others favor greater efforts to accommodate its rise—but they are united in their opposition to the self-indulgent hubris that has characterized U.S. grand strategy under recent Democratic and Republican administrations. Above all, restrainers oppose the capricious use of military force and believe the United States could be more secure and more prosperous if it spent less on national security and used its still considerable power more judiciously.
So why is Trump not a true restrainer? Let me count the ways.
First, Trump continues to favor unnecessary increases in the U.S. defense budget, which recently topped $1 trillion and still dwarfs that of every other country. Even worse, he is diverting some of these vast sums from their true purpose—defending the United States against foreign dangers—and using them to go after fictitious domestic enemies. Instead of deflating threats, Trump is using imaginary enemies at home and abroad to justify expanding presidential authority to dangerous levels. Restrainers have long warned that excessive militarization would eventually threaten civil liberties here in the United States, and Trump has proved them right.
Second, restrainers believe the United States should reduce its military footprint in Europe and the Middle East and adopt a more even-handed posture in the latter region. Trump has had ample opportunity to do both things and has yet to do either one. The U.S. presence in both regions remains largely unchanged, and Trump has doubled down on America’s “special relationships” in the Middle East and refused to engage seriously with opponents there.
Third, although Trump has been wary of committing U.S. ground forces to battle in potentially open-ended conflicts, he is perfectly comfortable using airpower in visible but strategically dubious acts of military theater. Since retaking office in January, he has struck targets in Yemen and Iran, and ordered the military to sink several boats in the Caribbean that were supposedly smuggling illegal drugs. In addition to the dubious legality of these actions, none of them are likely to accomplish any significant or lasting strategic purpose. Bulging Biceps Don’t Win Modern Wars

Why did Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary — he may call himself secretary of war, but Congress has not, in fact, voted to change his department’s name — summon 800 top generals and admirals to Washington? I admit that I feared the worst — that he would demand that they pledge personal fealty to Donald Trump. But no: They were summoned to listen to a speech about “lethality,” followed by a highly political speech by Trump himself.
How do you achieve lethality, according to Hegseth? By telling the military that it’s OK to engage in hazing, sexual abuse and bigotry — he didn’t say that explicitly, but that was his clear message. Also, war crimes are no big deal. And members of the military, including the top brass, must shave their beards, lose weight and do pull-ups.
Hegseth’s speech was morally vile. It was also, however, profoundly stupid. Hegseth seems to have gotten his ideas about what an effective military looks like by watching the movie 300.
I am, of course, by no means a military expert myself. But I read and talk to people who are military experts, and think I have some idea about how modern wars are fought. Furthermore, there’s a clear family resemblance between Hegsethian stupidity about modern war and Trumpian stupidity about economic policy. Modern nations don’t achieve prosperity by emphasizing “manly” jobs; they don’t win wars by having big biceps.
War still requires extraordinary courage from the men and women engaged in combat — courage that, according to officers I’ve spoken with, is rooted in a sense of honor, not swaggering machismo. Combatants also have to be physically fit enough to endure incredible hardship.
But they don’t have to look like bodybuilders — and anyway, only a small fraction of a modern army engages directly in combat. These days, war is conducted largely with machines and ranged weapons, and most of an army’s personnel are employed, one way or another, keeping those machines and weapons in action and providing the intelligence that makes them effective. These noncombatants are every bit as essential to victory as front-line troops.
Actually, this has been true for a long time, at least since World War II. I very much doubt that Hegseth would consider the team led by Alan Turing, which broke Germany’s Enigma code, or the group led by Joseph Rochefort, which broke Japan’s naval code, warriors — even leaving aside the fact that Turing was gay. Yet they contributed as much to victory as any front-line soldier.
And the “warrior ethos” Hegseth touts is even less sufficient, on its own, to win wars today.
We don’t have to speculate about what a 21st century war would look like, because there’s ferocious, dare I say lethal, combat happening in Ukraine as you read this.
Some readers may recall how impressive many politicians on the right found Russia’s army before it tried to conquer Ukraine.
But it turned out that the Russian army was much better at looking tough than it was at actually waging war. All that non-woke masculinity didn’t prevent Russia’s initial attempt to seize Kyiv from becoming an epic disaster.
And while the war goes on, and on, and on, it’s now waged largely with drones and cruise missiles, not well-groomed guys with six-pack abs. As the military historian and analyst Phillips O’Brien wrote in a recent Substack post, technology has turned large parts of the Ukraine battlefield into “kill zones” — sort of like No Man’s Land in World War I, but 40 or more kilometers wide. Sending men into these zones, no matter how tough they look, is just a way to throw their lives away.

In Trump’s first term, the president was surrounded by people who ensured that some of his nuttiest—and most dangerous—ideas were derailed before they could reach the military. Today, senior U.S. officers have to wonder who will shield them from the impulses of the person they just saw onstage. What are officers to make of Trump’s accusation that other nations, only a year ago, supposedly called America “a dead country”? (After all, these men and women were leading troops last year.) How are they supposed to react when Trump slips the surly bonds of truth, insults their former commanders in chief, and talks about his close relationship with the Kremlin?
In 1973, an Air Force nuclear-missile officer named Harold Hering asked a simple question during a training session: “How can I know that an order I receive to launch my missiles came from a sane president?” The question cost him his career. Military members are trained to execute orders, not question them. But today, both the man who can order the use of nuclear arms and the man who would likely verify such an order gave disgraceful and unnerving performances in Quantico. How many officers left the room asking themselves Major Hering’s question?

Dana Pittard, an author and retired U.S. Army general interviewed by The Guardian, said of Hegseth's speech, "I thought it was insulting." And Pittard, who is Black, said he deeply resented Hegseth's claim that non-white military leaders were promoted based on a racial quota system.

An Autocracy of Dunces
How stone-faced generals, Wall Street pushback, and a government shutdown may save America’s quickly declining democracy

If America still had a fully functioning democracy, Donald Trump’s speech Tuesday to the assembled generals would have ended his presidency. Trump treated the event like a political rally and was clearly taken aback by the refusal of the audience to applaud or laugh at his jokes. Delivering a nakedly partisan speech to a mandated assembly of military officers was a gross violation of the Hatch Act. The content —telling the officers to be ready to use force against U.S. citizens — was clearly an impeachable offense. In an earlier era, Trump’s incoherent ranting would have paved the way for his immediate removal from office under the 25th Amendment.
But how did this happen?
It’s clear that the decision to summon top officers from around the world to receive a lecture about “warrior ethos” from a man who installed a makeup studio at the Pentagon was made by Pete Hegseth. It confirmed publicly what is being whispered within the military, and presumably among our allies and enemies: that Hegseth is an abject incompetent who isn’t remotely up to the job. And this toe-curling performance is a reflection of his underlying panic.
It’s yet another example of Trump being undone by his even more chaotic minions – RFK Jr. and vaccines, Peter Navarro and his “Liberation Day” tariffs, Bill Pulte’s scurrilous use of private mortgage information (which implicated his own family) and Brendan Carr’s own-goal from going after Jimmy Kimmel. I could go on, but I think the point is made.
Back in August I wrote about “hackification,” invoking what I dubbed Arendt’s Law. As I noted, Hannah Arendt argued that authoritarian regimes don’t want competent people, who might sometimes take a stand on principle. They prefer crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is still the best guarantee of their loyalty.
My case in point in that post was E.J. Antoni, the chief economist at the Heritage Foundation, who Trump was trying to install as head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics after firing the previous Commissioner because he didn’t like the numbers the agency was reporting.
While there are many competent conservative economists, Antoni isn’t one of them. He is, instead, stunningly, Stephen-Moore-level incompetent, with a toxic history on social media. Trump’s choice of Antoni proved Arendt’s dictum: crackpots and fools are likely to be more loyal than people who actually know something.
The same logic surely explains the appointment of the hapless Hegseth.
Hackification is also an important factor in the government shutdown. Democrats have made their willingness to supply the extra votes needed to keep the government open contingent on an extension of the Biden-era expansion of health insurance subsidies, which will expire at the end of this year.
It’s good ground for them, politically: More than 24 million Americans get health coverage through the Affordable Care Act marketplaces, almost all of them subsidized. And if the subsidies are allowed to expire, many families will face a disastrous financial hit:

The political puzzle is why Republicans didn’t see this coming. The One Big Beautiful Bill carefully and cynically delays big cuts to Medicaid until after the midterms. Why didn’t it include a similarly cynical delay to the looming premium apocalypse?

Pope Leo XIV denounced people who deny climate change on Wednesday, arguing that they are contributing to the destruction of God's creation.
"Some have chosen to deride the increasingly evident science of climate change, to ridicule those who speak of global warming and even to blame the poor for the very thing that affects them the most," Leo said.
The pope's comments come just a week after U.S. President Donald Trump, in a speech at the United Nations, called climate change “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world.” On Tuesday, Leo made a direct foray into U.S. politics, defending the Chicago Archdiocese’s decision to honor Sen. Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat who supports abortion rights.
“I think it’s important to look at the overall work that a senator has done,” said the pope, a Chicago-area native.
"Someone who says, ‘I’m against abortion,’ but is in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life," he added. "Someone who says, ‘I’m against abortion but I’m in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States,’ I don’t know if that’s pro-life.”
The pope was speaking on Wednesday at a conference commemorating the 10-year anniversary of Laudato Si, a 2015 formal doctrinal letter issued by his predecessor, Pope Francis, that called for the protection of the planet, including the fight against climate change.
"We cannot love God whom we cannot see while despising his creatures, nor can we call ourselves disciples of Jesus Christ without participating in his outlook on creation and his care for all that is fragile and wounded," Leo said.
Following in the footsteps of Francis, Leo called on "everyone in society ... to put pressure on governments to develop and implement more rigorous regulations, procedures and controls" to fight climate change and protect the environment.

It is well past time to connect the dots. The Trump administration’s assault on democracy has entered a new and dangerous phase. Trump is doing exactly what he said he would do, and what many of us warned was coming. He is at the head of a political movement that has long aimed to demolish American democracy, and he and his inner circle of supporters are now backed into a corner where they have few options but to double down. In the next phase of this corrupt takeover of America’s governing institutions, the Trump administration is certain to expand on its already substantial control of both the system of justice and the corporate media, and it will use this control to suppress dissent and spread still more disinformation. Whether the GOP’s plan to destroy American democracy for good will succeed can’t be known. What those who still believe in the promise of America should do is clear.
Dot number one is the conversion of federal law enforcement and the system of justice into an instrument for punishing enemies of the regime and its leader. The indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, just days after President Trump said that Attorney Pam Bondi should prosecute him along with other political adversaries, takes us a giant step toward this objective. This radical action is not surprising for a man who appointed many of his own personal defense attorneys to top positions within the Department of Justice. It really doesn’t matter that the case against Comey is unlikely to result in a conviction. Trump’s adversaries will have already gotten the message that federal law enforcement is now a thoroughly political instrument of the leader and the ruling party. That is how corrupt autocracies work.
Dot number two: the executive order declaring “Antifa” a “domestic terrorist organization.” As an article published on the website of the libertarian Cato Institute pointed out, “antifa” is not a formal organization but rather “an idea”—the way Taoism or Crossfit or “going keto” are ideas—and it declared the move “idiotic on multiple levels.” The point of the order is to follow through on the hateful rhetoric with which Trump and many of his followers responded to the horrendous murder of Charlie Kirk. The administration intends to use the coercive power of federal law enforcement to attack all those who disagree with its political views on the pretext that to disagree with the ruler is to invite “terrorism.” With the administration’s attack on the Soros-funded Open Society Foundation, this weaponization of the DOJ and FBI is already well underway.
Dot number three is the deployment of the U.S. military against (so-called) domestic enemies. This began with the deployment of the National Guard and now includes various orders and declarations that make clear that Trump expects to use the military to apply coercive pressure against large sectors of the American population. The transformation of ICE into a federal police force largely outside of traditional law enforcement is a connected part of this project.
Dot number four is the conversion of mainstream media into regime-compliant propaganda and disinformation providers. The big story last week wasn’t the cancellation and (partial) return of Jimmy Kimmel. It was the clear declaration, long foretold, that antitrust regulators now work not for the American public but rather for the advance of Trump administration interests, which include the consolidation of America’s mainstream media industry into the hands of a small number of Trump-boosting billionaires. Hegseth’s Hatred of Americans Makes Him Unfit for Office but a Perfect Fit for Trump
The secretary of war is a Christian nationalist who wants to eliminate those who don’t agree with his totalitarian vision

The image of Hegseth that emerges from his authorship of The War on Warriors (2024), Battle for the American Mind (2022), and American Crusade (2020), is of a militant Christian extremist who is obsessed with the Crusades and whose highest aspiration is redesigning the U.S. military into his ideological mold.
The central idea of American Crusade is that the survival of the United States as a “free” country requires a “holy war” to achieve “a single paramount objective: the categorical defeat of the Left.” Hegseth accuses the left—by which he doesn’t just mean an extremist fringe but the Democratic Party and its supporters in general—of seeking the “utter annihilation” of true patriots. “We are two Americas; a house divided,” he declares, and the other half is full of people whose “ignorance and ideologies threaten America’s very survival.” Hegseth writes: “Only the categorical defeat of the Left will secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. We must reelect Donald Trump in 2020 and continue the cultural counterattack until Leftists are no longer electorally viable.” The implication is clear: liberty requires one-party rule. This is far from an unrepresentative line. In The War on Warriors, complaining that “the Left has never fought fair,” Hegseth lists “electing Obama” among its dirty tricks, despite the fact that Obama won a greater share of both the popular and the electoral vote in 2008 and 2012 than Trump did in 2016 and 2024.
In addition to treating a broadly defined “Left” as the enemy, American Crusade also heaps scorn on ostensibly patriotic but overly complacent “fifty-fifty Americans.” The term comes from Theodore Roosevelt, who is quoted in the epigraph to the first part of the book: “There is not room in the country for any fifty-fifty American, nor can there be but one loyalty—to the Stars and Stripes.” The quote appears to be a garbled amalgam of several passages in Roosevelt’s speeches and writings, all of them from a very specific context: divided loyalties among some German-Americans during World War I. Hegseth’s “fifty-fifty American,” by contrast, refers to a well-meaning non-combatant in the culture war: a “squish” who disapproves of the perceived excesses of the progressive left but shrugs them off in the hope that “common sense will prevail,” or who doesn’t want to be “overly political,” or who thinks his or her local public school is great. For all his talk of reverence for America’s founding ideals, Hegseth’s version of Americanism sounds at times more like proto-totalitarian French Jacobinism, whose ideologues asserted that not only “traitors” but the “indifferent” and the “passive” must be punished.
Besides Hegseth’s quasi-totalitarian demands for complete fealty to the right and intensely held animus toward the left in the culture war, there is also the troubling question of just how literally he takes the “war” part. American Crusade, after all, explicitly invokes the medieval Crusades as a model for the fight against “the Left.” Although Hegseth acknowledges that the history of the Crusades is “complicated” and that it includes nasty episodes, such as horrific violence toward Jews, he sees in them a model for civilizational conservation against an existential threat. He even justifies them based on a bizarre alternative history in which they served the cause of peace: “After centuries of fighting … Christianity in Europe was saved, Jerusalem was liberated, and Christians did not seek further war with Muslims.” In fact, Jerusalem was captured by Christian forces in the First Crusade in 1099 but recaptured by Muslims in 1187; seven subsequent Crusades over the next century were unsuccessful, and Jerusalem

The collapse of ancient empires, the revolutions that convulsed early modern Europe, or the tensions tearing apart today’s democracies are often treated as products of unique historical circumstances. But my analysis of more than a hundred past crises spanning the last two millennia shows that these outbreaks of societal instability are driven by a mechanism that operates with surprising regularity across different historical eras and places: the wealth pump. The term describes a set of conditions — economic and political — that transfer wealth from the broad base of the population to the elite, a small proportion of people who concentrate power in their hands.

The wealth pump consists of various means by which the fruits of economic growth are, instead of being shared equitably, siphoned upward the social ladder. In the past, this was from peasants to landlords; today, from workers to business owners and corporate executives. First, economic inequality rises. Then political inequality follows, as the wealthy convert their riches into influence. This development erodes democratic institutions, making it harder for the non-elite majority to defend their interests through formal politics. Eventually, systemic stability is threatened.
Undermining society
The wealth pump undermines the stability of societies in three ways.
1) It causes growing popular discontent.
The obvious effect of the wealth pump is that it enriches the upper strata and increases their numbers via upward economic mobility — for example, enabling CEOs of large companies to enter the ranks of uber-wealthy. However, this happens at the expense of the majority. To understand this, consider the relative wage, defined as the wage earned by typical workers (technically, the median wage) relative to the GDP per capita. When the relative wage declines, non-elite workers receive less and less of the fruits of economic growth. This decline in relative wages means that while wages stagnate, the costs of housing, education, and healthcare soar.
In the United States, for example, the relative wage began falling from the 1970s onward. Even as the economy grew, most Americans fell behind. This results in anger and increased mass-mobilization potential.

Instead of trying to solve some of the problems that Hegseth mentioned during his confirmation — things he might have been ambitious about reforming earlier, as someone described it to me — the department stopped being creative, and it started being just a mechanism for implementing executive orders.
In other words, he was waiting for Trump to tell him what to do.
Hegseth is not an ideological character. This is something that sources close to him emphasized. He used to have a more interventionist mindset. He wrote several books about how we should have been in Iraq longer. But as soon as he came into this administration, he started parroting isolationist points of view. He’s someone who’s willing to shift his ideology depending on who he might be talking to, and I think that’s particularly useful to Trump, who might want Hegseth to follow questionable orders.
This isn’t somebody who’s going to have a red line, because he is not someone who has strong ideas about what the military ought to be doing. So if Hegseth’s square jaw is ultimately what got him this job, what’s keeping him in the job is his demonstrated loyalty to the strong man at the top. I think he is here because Donald Trump trusts that when Donald Trump calls on Pete Hegseth to do something questionable, he is a guy who’s going to follow orders.

Brian Finucane, a former State Department lawyer who is a specialist in counterterrorism issues and the laws of war, said that the briefers’ repeated references to “designated terrorist organizations” suggested there was an undisclosed legal opinion within the administration — possibly from the Department of Justice — that makes a case that lethal force is somehow lawful against so-called DTOs under Article 2 of the Constitution.
“That might be the construct that they are using for a justification,” Finucane said. “We don’t know because the administration has not disclosed any sort of underlying legal opinions or legal memos that might provide a basis for these strikes.”
The White House did not respond to repeated requests for information about the legal authorities underpinning the attacks.

Sometimes even the Trump administration acts like a normal American government. The bailout of Argentina is one of those times.
The Trump administration is proposing to lend Argentina up to $20 billion to support its currency on financial markets. The plan is unpopular with Republicans and Democrats alike. Yet at a time when much of U.S. policy seems driven by a perverse hostility to the outside world, assistance to Argentina is a welcome exception that deserves support across the political spectrum.
Yes, the administration’s proposal completely contradicts Donald Trump’s rhetoric of “America First,” but this rhetoric is wrong and self-harming. Yes, the bailout is motivated by Trump’s capricious favoritism. But in this case, Trump has at least chosen an appropriate beneficiary.
Yes, at least one hedge-fund friend of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s stands to benefit. But there are hedge funds on every side of every financial bet, and saying no to the deal will also enrich somebody.
The United States has a big interest in advancing free-market and democratic institutions in the Western hemisphere. We are now in a phase, however, where authoritarian nationalism is gaining ground, from Mexico on southward. At a time when much of Latin America is heading the wrong way, Argentina is progressing toward a more open economy.
Javier Milei came to power in December 2023 promising radical change. Decades of corrupt and authoritarian government interventions had twisted the Argentine economy into a dysfunctional mess. In the year that Milei was elected president, inflation surpassed 211 percent. Impoverished people lived in the streets outside empty dwellings that few could afford to rent. A libertarian economist with little political experience, Milei pledged to let loose a free-market transformation that would put Argentina on the path to monetary stability and sustainable growth.
Milei mostly kept his promise. But along the way, he took a gamble with his management of the exchange rate of Argentina’s troubled currency—not an absurd gamble, but a gamble all the same. That gamble has gone wrong, and this failure now jeopardizes the rest of Milei’s economic agenda. If Milei fails, his failure will discredit market-oriented reformers in every economically troubled country in the Americas and beyond. If Milei succeeds, he will revive economic and political liberalism in a hemisphere where those systems are now in retreat.
Let’s start with Milei’s accomplishments. They are enormous. Just before he entered office, the country’s inflation rate was rising in the double digits every month. Milei has lowered the inflation rate to 2 percent a month—still high, but an astonishing change in the right direction.
Before Milei’s presidency, Argentine real-estate markets were strangled by controls. Landlords would not rent because rents rapidly fell below market values; home-seekers could not buy because the mortgage market had ceased to exist. Now the housing market is reviving, and it’s even possible to get a mortgage in a country where inflation once eliminated all long-term lending.
How did Milei do it? Although he gained renown for being an outlandish showman, his economic ideas are free-market common sense. End rent controls to boost the housing supply. Cut government spending to shrink the budget deficits that drive inflation. Lower tariffs, export taxes, and other barriers to trade. Privatize state assets to make them more efficient and pay down government debt. Milei, a former television pundit with a big mouth and attention-getting hair, is often likened to Trump. Yet their philosophies of government could not be further apart. If anything, Trump’s statism, authoritarianism, and corruption are reminiscent of Juan Perón, Milei’s ideological nemesis.

Driving the news: Trump said on One America News television network in an interview that aired on Thursday that he is considering offering Americans checks from the revenue, worth somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000.
"We're going to do something, we're looking at something. No. 1, we're paying down debt. Because people have allowed the debt to go crazy," he said.
"We'll pay back debt, but we also might make a distribution to the people, almost like a dividend to the people of America," he added.

How much money tariffs are generating
By the numbers: Tariffs are projected to generate more than $400 billion a year in revenue, Axios' Neil Irwin reported this week.

Despite the best efforts of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who put the livestream on his YouTube page, Democrats ended the round-the-clock bid after about 11-and-a-half hours.
By contrast, a rival White House feed showcasing past Democratic opposition to shutdowns peaked at more than 100,000 views.
“Meanwhile, [the White House] is schlonging Democrats on the viewer count,” White House Communications Director Steven Cheung chided.
A competing livestream of Senate Democrats — that spanned 40 minutes and was led by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) notched 90,000 views when it was live and has since garnered over 500,000 views.
By contrast, part one of the House Democrats’ livestream drew 24,000 total viewers as of Thursday morning.
House Democrats had hoped tagging in progressive influencers such as Jack Cocchiarella and Carlos Eduardo Espina could help juice their numbers, but even then, live viewership only peaked at around 1,000, Politico reported.
Jeffries’ team later claimed that the stream garnered more than 60,000 views when accounting for different platforms.
“As Leader Jeffries has consistently said and done, Democrats are in a more-is-more environment,” Jeffries spokesperson Christie Stephenson told Politico.
“Apparently for some, that means more is more snark and that’s their choice as to how they want to spend this pivotal moment.”
GOP operatives wasted little time pillorying Democrats over the livestream debacle.
“There are more people watching a weeknight WNBA game than the House Democrats’ livestream about their own shutdown. Party of 18% approval rating and sinking by the day,” chided Armani Gracia, communications director for Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), chided.

Pete Hegseth, a former Fox News bobblehead with documented alcohol problems, summoned the military’s top 800 generals, admirals and flag officers to Quantico, Virginia this week to degrade them with a juvenile rant he could have delivered on Zoom.
“We don’t fight with stupid rules of engagement. We untie the hands of our warfighters to intimidate, demoralize, hunt, and kill the enemies of our country.”
The enemies of our country, they would next learn from Donald Trump, are Americans.
At the conclusion of Hegseth’s immature rant about beards, killer ethos and real men, Trump stepped into the spotlight like it was a MAGA rally.
Meandering from topic to topic for more than an hour, Trump mused on his fondness for the television show Victory at Sea, asserted his claim to a Nobel Peace Prize, criticized how former Presidents Obama and Biden walk down stairs, described how he walks down stairs, insulted “radical Democrats,” declared his love for tariffs, attacked Biden or his autopen 11 times, criticized how military ships “look,” mentioned making Canada the 51st state, and described the kind of thick paper he prefers to use when signing promotions.
Trump bizarrely told the officers he’d ended more than six wars, even though many people in the room continue to work on his “resolved” conflicts as they rage on. He also repeatedly mentioned nuclear weapons.
“I rebuilt our nuclear … I call it the N-word. There are two N-words, and you can’t use either of them.”
Several officials called Trump’s speech truly disturbing and evidence its speaker is unwell — “even for Trump.”
After bragging earlier in the day that he could and would fire “any officer” he “doesn’t like … on the spot,” Trump told assembled brass they were crucial in his fight against the “enemy from within.” Distilled, Trump said they would soon be fighting Americans.
Hyping the pitch, Trump claimed, “We’re under invasion from within. No different than a foreign enemy, but more difficult in many ways because they don’t wear uniforms.” He then added ominously that “our inner cities” were becoming “a big part of war now,” and that “we should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military.”
Using American cities as “training grounds” for Hegseth’s extra-legal “lethality” operations meant to “kill people and break things” is batshit Reichstag Fire lunacy.
Patriots worried about the Constitution should take heart. The disastrous spectacle delivered a silver lining that may well save the republic.
Generals know what they must do
The silver lining is that every high-ranking officer stationed everywhere in the world now knows, without a doubt, two crucial facts they may only have suspected before Quantico:
·Hegseth plans to disregard the rules of engagement to deliver maximum “lethality,” regardless of domestic and international law; and
·Trump is unwell, and mentally unfit to serve as Commander-in-Chief.
Knowledge of those two facts will inform decisions on how to respond to illegal orders. Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, they are required to disobey illegal orders, including those that violate US law as well as the Constitution.
Having heard Hegseth’s criminal intent, and having experienced Trump’s insanity, the officers’ resolve to disobey any and all illegal orders will only strengthen.

These GOP fire eaters are preparing their supporters for war

In the decade before the Civil War, slave-owning men known as “Fire Eaters” started ratcheting up public discourse in stark, divisive, all or nothing terms. They cast their interests not as political differences, but as an existential crisis facing the nation. They used public speeches to vilify people who disagreed with them, spreading hatred in the hearts of men until it grew hot, and war became inevitable.
It’s impossible to read the words of those men without hearing the voices of Donald Trump and Stephen Miller speaking at Charlie Kirk’s memorial.
Using that solemn occasion to deliver a message of hatred and division, two weeks after Kirk’s murder, Trump and Miller are still exploiting it. Despite the lack of clarity about both the killer’s motive and his shifting political ideologies, they continue to spread false rhetoric blaming the “radical left,” projecting their own wish for political violence just as the Fire Eaters of the 19th century did.
Words of war
Anyone who expected a respite, or dared to hope for a “presidential” message during Kirk’s memorial service, was sorely disappointed. After a MAGA speaker lineup, Trump walked onto the stage while Lee Greenwood sang “Proud to be an American,” also known as “God Bless the U.S.A.” In Trump's heavily choreographed entrance, raucous applause erupted as live fireworks exploded across a stage more reminiscent of a used car clearance event than a somber memorial.
After Kirk’s grieving widow spoke of forgiveness and grace, Trump batted her words away. Trump relayed to the audience how Kirk said he didn’t hate people who disagreed with him.
“But,” Trump said, “That’s where I disagreed with Charlie. I hate my opponents and I don’t want the best for them, I’m sorry.”
Miller, the presumed architect behind Trump’s attacks on immigrants and minorities, delivered his own ghoulish invective, eulogizing Kirk with dark images of us vs. them:
“The light will defeat the dark. We will prevail over the forces of wickedness and evil. They cannot imagine what they have awakened. They cannot conceive of the army that they have arisen in all of us. Because we stand for what is good, what is virtuous, what is noble.
And to those trying to incite violence against us, those trying to foment hatred against us, what do you have? You have nothing. You are nothing. You are wickedness. You are jealousy. You are envy. You are hatred. You are nothing. You can build nothing. You can produce nothing. You can create nothing. We are the ones who build. We are the ones who create. We are the ones who lift up humanity.”
Miller didn’t define who he meant by “we” and “they.” He didn’t need to.
Right v left
Trump and Miller are getting their wish: Political violence in the US is on the rise. Violent attacks against US government personnel and facilities more than doubled between 2024 and 2025. Contrary to what Trump and Miller keep claiming, however, it’s coming from the right, not the left.
Analyzing political violence according to the views of the perpetrator is complicated in part because interpreting motive can itself be subjective. It’s also complicated because different organizations use different terminology. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security define domestic violent extremism as violence “intended to influence government policy or intimidate civilians for political or ideological purposes,” while researchers, including universities, use more operational definitions.
Despite these challenges, data clearly show that right-wing political violence has been far, far deadlier than left-wing political violence.

Stephen Miller accused of 'incitement to violence against judges' with new 'purge' comment

Miller, who has been accused of making his subordinates cry at work, took to social media over the weekend to make several proclamations related to "leftist" judges.
"The Democrat Party has filled our legal and judicial system with radicals who protect leftwing terrorists," Miller wrote Saturday. "This is a very real and dire crisis for our Republican form of government."
In a separate post, Miller accused "Democrat judges" of "shielding" terrorism.
"The issue before is now is very simple and clear. There is a large and growing movement of leftwing terrorism in this country," he claimed. "It is well organized and funded. And it is shielded by far-left Democrat judges, prosecutors and attorneys general."
Miller then concluded, "The only remedy is to use legitimate state power to dismantle terrorism and terror networks."
Journalist Jim Stewartson similarly sounded the alarm:
"Stephen Miller is going to execute a purge of the Democratic Party and the justice system based on his illegal, unconstitutional memo NSPM-7. He has collapsed Democrats, 'far-left Democrat judges' and 'Antifa' into a single domestic terror threat as a pretext for mass arrests."
NBC News Supreme Court reporter Lawrence Hurley said Miller was ramping up the rhetoric.
"Stephen Miller escalates the harsh and conspiratorial rhetoric yet again, suggesting that federal judges, prosecutors and state attorneys general are aiding and abetting a shadowy network of leftist domestic terrorist groups," Hurley wrote on X.

NEW YORK — President Donald Trump is openly embracing the conservative blueprint he desperately tried to distance himself from during the 2024 campaign, as one of its architects works to use the government shutdown to accelerate his goals of slashing the size of the federal workforce and punishing Democratic states.
In a post on his Truth Social site Thursday morning, Trump announced he would be meeting with his budget chief, “Russ Vought, he of PROJECT 2025 Fame, to determine which of the many Democrat Agencies, most of which are a political SCAM, he recommends to be cut, and whether or not those cuts will be temporary or permanent.”
The comments represented a dramatic about-face for Trump, who spent much of last year denouncing Project 2025, The Heritage Foundation’s massive proposed overhaul of the federal government, which was drafted by many of his longtime allies and current and former administration officials.
Both of Trump’s Democratic rivals, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, made the far-right wish list a centerpiece of their campaigns, and a giant replica of the book featured prominently onstage at the Democratic National Convention.
“Donald Trump and his stooges lied through their teeth about Project 2025, and now he’s running the country straight into it,” said Ammar Moussa, a former spokesperson for both campaigns. “There’s no comfort in being right — just anger that we’re stuck with the consequences of his lies.”
Shalanda Young, director of the Office of Management and Budget under Biden, said the administration had clearly been following the project’s blueprint all along.
“I guess Democrats were right, but that doesn’t make me feel better,” she said. “I’m angry that this is happening after being told that this document was not going to be the centerpiece of this administration.”
Asked about Trump’s reversal, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said, “Democrats are desperate to talk about anything aside from their decision to hurt the American people by shutting down the government.”
Project what?
Top Trump campaign leaders spent much of 2024 livid at The Heritage Foundation for publishing a book full of unpopular proposals that Democrats tried to pin on the campaign to warn a second Trump term would be too extreme.
While many of the policies outlined in its 900-plus pages aligned closely with the agenda that Trump was proposing — particularly on curbing immigration and dismantling certain federal agencies — others called for action Trump had never discussed, like banning pornography, or Trump’s team was actively trying to avoid, like withdrawing approval for abortion medication.
Trump repeatedly insisted he knew nothing about the group or who was behind it, despite his close ties with many of its authors. They included John McEntee, his former director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, and Paul Dans, former chief of staff at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.
“I know nothing about Project 2025,” Trump insisted in July 2024. “I have no idea who is behind it. I disagree with some of the things they’re saying and some of the things they’re saying are absolutely ridiculous and abysmal. Anything they do, I wish them luck, but I have nothing to do with them.”
Trump’s campaign chiefs were equally critical.
“President Trump’s campaign has been very clear for over a year that Project 2025 had nothing to do with the campaign, did not speak for the campaign, and should not be associated with the campaign or the President in any way,” wrote Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita in a campaign memo.
