Got a good one for you guys. Especially if you like time loop movies.

Triangle (2009)

It's no Edge of Tomorrow, and unless I'm missing something it's not going to leave you with many questions at the end like a lot of time loop/time travel movies do, but for a $12 Million budget, I thought it was pretty excellent.

The "lesser" Hemsworth Liam was the only name I recognized from it, and I'm pretty sure it's the first time I've actually seen him in anything. Lead actress Melissa George and did a great job... and she was gorgeous. Australian actress, which is probably why we don't see too much of her here. Did a search on IMDB though and was surprised to see that I've seen her at least three times before. She did an episode of House. She was in 5 episodes of the TV show ROAR from 1997 starring Heath Leger even before he was in 10 Things I hate about you.

But the one that got me was Mulholland Drive. She played Camilla Rhodes. Not the Camilla Rhodes that got more screen time as played by Laura Harring who also played Rita, but the blonde glammed up version of Camilla Rhodes that only showed up early in the movie, if memory serves. No wonder I didn't realize that was her though. It was 12 years earlier and this was very much a different character. I can't even remember if she really had any lines in Mulholland Drive, actually. I don't know... been too many years since I've seen it.

She was also in 23 episodes of Alias, but I never watched that show.

As always, I recommend going in blind and not checking out the trailer first.

I should mention too, that this movie was made in a time when we kept the movies at a reasonable length. With credits included, the runtime was only 1 hour and 39 minutes.

This lead to what I would call nearly perfect pacing. Today they would have made this movie 2 1/2 hours long and filled us in with all the unnecessary backstory for all the characters that was not at all necessary to the plot.

I was thrilled that just about 15 minutes into the story we're already getting to the action, and I didn't have to sit through 45 minutes to an hour of douchey rich people gabbing away about douchey rich people bullshit on a yacht before we get to the meat of the story.

If so, I might have thought it similar to Virus. There were a few ghost ship films out around then, IIRC.
Melissa George is gorgeous. She also had a character arc on Good Wife, which I saw on reruns.
That role had similar feel to Alexandria Daddorio in Modern Family.
This was Liam's first year of films.

You ain't kidding. Melissa George is gorgeous.

I mean, she's almost 50 now, so I hope she aged like a fine wine like Jennifer Conneley did. But I got 10 teeth left and I'm a only a few years younger, so what do I know.

I only know Alexandria Daddorio from a few episodes of It's Always Sunny, but talk about another stunner. Never watched Modern Family, or The Good Wife either. I did see that Melissa was in that though because I looked her up on IMDB while my old man was still here and mentioned some of the things I know I'd heard of and he said he never watched that show but he remembered that it was a pretty big deal when it was out.

Triangle was pretty damn good, and I would give it a solid recommendation to anybody who likes movies about time. I wouldn't call it a "Ghost Ship" movie though, but I really don't want to say much more because I like going into movies knowing as little as possible myself.

I'll have to see if there's a good movie called Square or Rectangle now. I know years back I recommended a movie called Circle, so maybe there's a good movie for all the shapes.

I liked Willy's Wonderland. It wouldn't even be watchable without him in it, and the fact that he doesn't say a single word in the whole movie is a good gimmick for him.

The Color Purple was Okay. I didn't realize it was an H.P. Lovecraft movie until after my dad and I started watching it and when his name popped up I had to pause the movie and apologize ahead of time that it probably wasn't going to be very good. I'd say it's better than your average Lovecraft movie, but still not very good. Another movie that would have been terrible had Cage not been in it, but the movie itself was so crazy that it overshadowed Nic's crazy acting.

I can't even remember the name of the one where he was showing up in people's dreams now. That one had so much potential, but the last 15 minutes were terrible and the ending sucked hard.

And then there's The Surfer. God awful movie that nobody should ever watch.

I think me and the old man walked away from this one even more pissed off at the ending than we did The Surfer, only because as fucking weird as the entire thing was, it was at least intriguing right up until the end.

I don't hate this movie. I know that I'm missing something to be walking away from it without feeling like I have any of the answers. The Surfer made me feel stupid for wasting 90 minutes of my time and my old man's time. The more I think about Enemy, the more I feel stupid for not automatically getting it...

Minor "spoilers" ahead, although I don't think they really matter with a movie like this.

It's a VERY yellow movie. Something I commented on within the first couple of minutes. As much as The Matrix is a Green movie, Enemy is a Yellow movie. However there are several scenes in the movie that do not have this yellow filter applied to them. If I were to watch it again, that is something I would for sure be keeping track of, and figuring what was going different in those scenes compared to the rest of the movie.

Google search tells me that "Yellow in cinema can represent anxiety, madness, frenzy, action, vitality, and can be associated with disease, and is used in action scenes."

Heh... I'd say yellow was "Madness" for the people on the screen, and "Anxiety" for the people watching the screen.

Soundtrack I'm undecided on. Lots of low horns, and at some point I said it reminded me of the OLD Warner Bros. Bugs and Daffy cartoons when they'd use the horns to comedic effect. Many times in the film I was thinking we were just one or two beats away from this turning into a full blown Looney Tunes 40's-50's era cartoon. It never did turn to wacky though, and it probably was a good choice to help manipulate you into a sense of unease and anxiety while watching it. Did I mention this is a weird fucking movie? Oh... and spiders.

This is a movie that I really, really want to like, but I'm going to have to work at it if that's going to happen.

You've got to hand it to them to make something this weird with so few characters. Mullholand Drive and Donnie Darko had a lot of other characters to work off of, and so much more going on.

There are essentially 4 or 5 people in this movie depending on how you count them. And 2 of them have pretty small roles and the 3rd one's screen time is almost non-existent. Jake Gyllenhall is the main focus of the entire run time, and it feels as though the other characters were written in just to be an extension of him.

I know at one point I said "Alright... Can everybody just stop being so fucking weird?". And that was when I'd asked earlier in the movie if anybody in the movie was going to start acting like a human being.

The very rare instance you see an "extra" it's not people doing stuff in the background, but it is somebody who is actually going to interact with the main character(s) with a line or two. That dialogue is either going to be something that seems totally normal but entirely inconsequential on first viewing, or is going to be something so out of left field that I kept thinking "yeah. That's exactly what we needed now. Let's make this nonsense movie even more nonsensical. And the way that Jake takes either type of dialogue in stride with the same same muted and unfazed demeanor makes it all the weirder.

The only part of the movie I can think of where there is more than 2 people on screen at the same time is when Jake's college professor character is speaking in front of his class.

I do think that narcissism plays a very large part of this flick, and the viewer only being witness to any more than one other character in every scene would make a lot of sense here, since he was teaching a class, and it would be one ti

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ENEMY (Seriously, don't read these if you haven't seen it and you think you'd have any desire to see it):

I watched it again. I don't think I've ever done that and watched the same movie twice in one day. I'm going to now put a TL;DR here, which is repeated at the very bottom of this post and is my final assessment of what this movie actually was after my 2nd viewing. I'd consider the rest of my post "showing the work" to get to this answer.

FINAL RATING: 8.5/10, but this is a very subjective rating on my part. I don't recommend Enemy (2013) to anyone because most people who watch it are going to hate it. Of that I have no doubt. But if you love it, you're really going to love it.

TL;DR

"Enemy"...

Yanno what I think...

I think this was a story about a man that got so good at manipulating everyone around him that before the movie started he got it into his head to use manipulation techniques on himself and was experimenting, possibly with a combination of hypnosis and psychedelic drugs like mushrooms or LSD with the goal of either killing off or walling off a part of himself that he rightfully didn't find desirable, and up until that point had no ability to control. Not only the memory and guilt of his infidelity, but the lust and desire for the infidelity itself as well...

And I think when the movie began, he had already somehow accomplished this. For at least long enough to have gotten close enough back in with his wife that it looked like he probably was going to be able to save the marriage if he played his cards right.

But this version of him was really jealous of the idea that the other version had sex with his wife (to the viewer's knowledge at least, this had not happened up to this point). And he used that belief as justification to take the "other" version's mistress out on a date and have his way with her as revenge. (Possibly emphasizing beyond him just kind of being a Dickhead to this point that he had managed to bury his sinful Lust, with equally sinful Wrath). Petty and what amounts to total nonsense if you were still looking at this movie as if both Jakes were two different people as almost everyone certainly was the first time viewing it.

My point is, until there was a rage inside of "Dickhead" and a desire for revenge, it didn't appear that this version of Jake had any real recollection let alone remorse for cheating on his wife. I don't think whatever he did to himself left a great personality behind for his wife to deal with overall, but the guilt of his infidelity as well as the desire for more was successfully gone.

... until it wasn't.

And our mild-mannered "good guy" protagonist comes out of the woodwork of the deep, dark recesses of Jake's suppressed mind. The "good guy" version is actually the "bad guy".

Sure... he was the suppressed guilt. He was the part of Jake that his wife literally sat up and took notice of as she could immediately tell that he had changed and he was genuinely sorry for what he did. The part of Jake that she could believe actually felt sorry for what he did and would do anything to make it up to her.

But at the same time, he was also the suppressed lust. Though old boy "Dickhead" never had it in him to give his wife a genuine apology, he probably would have remained faithful to her for the rest of his life.

But once our "hero" Jake takes over and says he was sorry and had himself a good cry, it didn't take very long for his entire persona to shift right back to where it was before he got caught cheating. New secret plans to go out and fuck around on her at another meeting had fallen literally into his lap, and were waiting for him all the while, and his wife again became the spider.

If that is the movie I just watched twice, or something very close to it, well played, Sirs.

FINAL SPOILER ALERT FOR ENEMY:

One more thing I thought of regarding the spiders. Though they make no mention or even any hint that I could tell that Upper Class/Rich ex-Hollywood (possibly wannabe) Starlet Mom was a "Black Widow" herself, she's wearing all black and there is a LOT of black in the decor surrounding her in Isabella Rossellini's only on-screen scene. And there is never an appearance or even mention of Jake's father in the movie.

Perhaps there's even deeper levels here and our boy Jake saw his mom do something pretty heinous when he was too young to really process it, and subconsciously he worries that one day his own wife will have enough of his bullshit and do the same thing to him. Or maybe he didn't see anything and was completely oblivious to it when he was young, but once it happened a few more times a lot of people started whispering things that I would imagine would be quite damaging to a young impressionable mind when they're all saying it about his mother.

It would easily work into the story and would at least put a 2x multiplier on the meaning of the spiders in the film. Now we're not only talking about the spider luring him into the web (his subconscious feelings about being married to anyone in general, and not specifically his wife), but now we're also talking about the woman he married having her way with him while he's stuck in her web until the eventual day finally comes around where he is decapitated and eaten by her in the end. And with the amount of guilt he feels for what he does he seems to be content resigning himself to that fate because he feels that he deserves it.

I mean... come on...

I just went back to look at that scene again on YT to see if it really was as black as I remember it.

Just look at that thumbnail.

Mom's all dressed in black. There's black on the outskirts (and you can see the framed movie poster of Mom when she was young on the left side).

But it's all bright and lit up white in the center of the room. Jake is sitting in the Black Widow's den, but the only reason he's safe is because he's her son. I think those black lights above the dining room table might even signify her fallen prey. Do I count 1, 2, 3 dead husbands hanging up there?

And all that white behind them, right behind the DINING ROOM TABLE is her Webbing.

Take a look at what's back there in the White. I see shelves with paint and brushes on them. Easels... Canvas... Ornate picture frames waiting to be fit over the finished work.

The spider, always weaving her web.

And then... On the flip side... I don't recall his pregnant wife he cheated on wearing much of anything besides white. The mistress wears black. All the time. Blue jeans at times, but always with a black top. Sometimes wearing a sexy black dress.

Maybe this goes even one step further and insinuates that he's following exactly in his father's footsteps and he will end up just like his father did. And it also means that he is destined to damage his wife so badly that he will turn what is only his projections onto her into reality, and that was what happened to his mother.

After you realize what is really going on in this movie and Jake's wife doesn't come off as an alien life form or A.I. program that doesn't quite understand how human interactions work for saying the things that she does when she says them, she actually comes off as quite a sweet woman and somebody that most any man would proudly call a wife. Maybe they're saying that Isabella Rosselini's character was once just like her, until her cheater of a husband turned her heart cold and after years of emotional abuse, betrayal and infidelity she killed him... and then found out that she kind of liked it and made it a regular thing, especially since it seems to have been quite lucrative. Perhaps my earlier assumptions were wrong and the reason he

Another quote from the movie, which was just words put on the screen in the beginning of the movie and never quoted by one of the characters stuck out to me for that very reason, and I rewound and paused it just so I could take it in before the movie started...

So nobody's ever seen Enemy?

I'm actually glad my TV was small enough where the thumbnail for the movie poster wasn't really decipherable. It would have really blunted the impact of one scene in particular that made me think this movie was going somewhere completely different on the first viewing. Possibly many more.

I really do prefer knowing as little as I possibly can going into a movie, and taking the word of somebody who's opinion I respect, both on their taste in movies and just life in general, before devoting my time to watching one.

Going in blind is the only way you can have the genuine experience.

Movie trailers are for movies I know I'm never going to watch, or for digging up relics of my past.

I would love to hear what anybody else thinks about Enemy if they have already seen it or they decide to devote the time to watching it.

I still haven't watched a video explaining it or looking up anything written about it online. I haven't made up my mind whether or not I want devote more time to unraveling it all on my own, and I see no reason to rush it. I don't want to be tainted by theories of other people who have already spread their theory out there, but I'd enjoy hearing the thoughts of somebody else who saw it and what they think is going on.

If it's as tightly crafted as I suspect it might have been, this is a pretty cool puzzle they made which requires you to shape all the pieces yourself and end up with a perfect rectangle without any missing, extra or overlapping pieces.

Even with all that figuring the other night, I know that I haven't succeeded in that.

I'll be pissed at myself one day if I find out that I'm giving this film way more credit than it deserves and there wasn't any care put into any sort of "puzzle" and they just threw a bunch of weird shit in any old way to make a weird movie that makes all the critic fart sniffers give it their flowery prose about how Stunning and Intellectual it was.

I don't know why, but I don't think that's the case here.

I can't remember when or how, but at some point while looking up the movie on IMDB I gleaned that the director that made this was kind of a big deal (most likely a sidebar thumbnail or something I saw when I was grabbing the link for my first post about the movie).

I heard he directed "Arrival". I know a lot of people thought very highly of that, although I've never seen it. I remember my Dad being especially impressed with it. I should ask him if he wants to watch that next and then tell him that it was the same director that did Enemy and see what he thinks when I drop that truth bomb on him.

So... I just looked now, and Denis Villeneuve did both of the recent Dune movies, Blade Runner 2049, something called Prisoners (which I definitely have to see), and a few others that I've actually heard of earlier in his career.

I've never seen one of his movies before Enemy. Never even knew his name until after I saw it, and only committed it to memory in the last 20 minutes.

Now I just have to decide if I watch Arrival next, or if I go with one of his earlier, lesser known works before I go straight to his critically acclaimed and fairly mainstream works.

This dude made my Old Man really think after he'd watched Arrival years ago. I don't exactly remember why and what he specifically said he liked about it, but I think he told me that it had the idea that because most people only know one language they are very limited in their capacity to think? Maybe something involving human beings learning the alien's language and all of the sudden it's like they're geniuses that are thinking on a higher plane than any human who hadn't learned the language. Not low budget at $50 Million, especially not back in 2009, but probably an indie title since I can't find any major studios attached to it, and I've never heard of Summit Entertainment before... but I just watched "Knowing" with the old man today.

He thought now that we've The Surfer off of our palates, we could go back to 2009 in what could possibly be Nic Cage's last good movie. I'd never even heard of this movie before, but he liked it. Looks like it didn't do too bad in the theaters either with $180+ Million off that $50 Million budget... back in the days where that easily meant a profit over $75 Million after expenses.

It was 2 hours long, but didn't feel that long.

I don't think it had all that much to say aside from some semi-sciency and semi-religiousy undertones. The predetermination vs. chaos argument that you've probably seen play out 100 times before if your viewing and/or reading habits are anything like mine. But it did it well. I think it probably said what a lot of them don't, and that there's really no reason at all why Science and God couldn't coexist. A belief I've held myself since somewhere in my 20's.

The obscenely dated CGI that probably didn't look good to audiences 16 years ago in one scene toward the very end is a tragedy in 2025, but don't let that keep you from seeing it. It's not a CGI heavy movie and the scene might be a little distracting, but at that point the movie was finished talking anyway.

Solid 7.5 out of 10. Maybe I'd give it an 8 just for Nic Cage. He went way off brand for this role, and the hilarious thing is that if there ever were a situation that would excuse the Craziest of Crazy Nic to come out, it was one of his most low-key roles I've ever seen him in.

Oh, right. It also had a young Rose Byrne in it, only several years after 28 Weeks Later had come out. Glad to see it looks as though she had a pretty decent career over the years. I'd never seen her in anything other than 28 Weeks myself. It looks like she was in every one of the Insidious movies, and I know that they're moneymakers.

I know the feeling... My aunt once said that she "likes the idea of people". That about sums it up for me. I prefer hanging out with one or just several friends at a time and don't want anything to do with big get-togethers anymore. Even better if we're working on a project or something when hang out instead of sitting around and doing nothing.

I guess $20 Mil is fine in 2026.

We're probably well beyond Indie at that level, but the title of the thread was low budget AND indie flicks, so $20 Million is certainly low-budget compared to anything Disney puts out on the regular.

I'd say that The Mask is probably too big budget for this thread, just because it's 30 years old.

I'm not saying that you need to bust out the inflation calculator every time you post here, but at only $18 Million the budget in 2026 would be over $40 Million today, which I don't consider to be low-budget at all.

I watched "Wild in the Streets" (1968) with the old man the other day. That was pretty fun for a low budget movie of the time. My old man saw it in the theater when he was 16 and said he bought the album. Pretty sweet soundtrack, although two of the songs have the same titles as other songs from around the time that made it a bit confusing. I know one of them was "The Shape of Things To Come". That title has been used many times, including by Audioslave. I actually thought he was talking about the Yarbirds song when he first mentioned it, but that song is actually called "Shapes of Things".

When they played the song "Fourteen or Fight", it was driving me nuts trying to figure out which song I'd heard before that had the same notes as the melody of the chorus of that song... (Starting at 1:24)

After trying about a million combinations of words on google and youtube I finally somehow found it...

1967, huh? Well who the hell ripped off who?

Well... that was a remake. The original was from 1965.

Mystery solved.

Oh, right... Yes. That was Richard Pryor on drums. I never seen him anywhere close to that young before. He had a good line or two in the movie, but his comedic chops were severely underutilized.

Hey Jaynez... You see the last post?

You've probably never seen that movie and probably wouldn't enjoy it, but I was interested in what you thought about the music. I'm sure of anybody here you will know what I'm talking about with the melody.

I enjoyed it. I think my dad got a kick out of me enjoying it. He said "let me know if you don't like it and we can watch something else", which is something we started to say to each other on occasion after a few really crappy movies we suffered through together, mostly starring The Man Himself, Nic Cage.

I found myself thinking that I would have LOVED this movie if I was a kid or even in my 20's back then. I said "you probably were on board with all of this at 16 years old, huh?".

He said "No. I knew it was all bullshit back then too... but I really loved the soundtrack".

That got a pretty good laugh out of me because I don't doubt that it's true.

I would say that a really nice side-effect of watching Wild in the Streets is that I "found" A Little Bit of Soul.

Listening again right now and I freakin' love both versions of it.

I think my mom's brother who loved the Beach Boys and anything 60's must have had this on the radio when I was REALLY little and we'd stay overnight and hang out with our cousins. I remember him saying all the music today was garbage and the 60's was the best, and me and my cousin laughing after he told his dad, "yeah right Dad".

I don't think I'm going to convert to 60's music after one movie, but I bet if I look backward I'll find a lot more good music than if I look forward.

He might have been on to something.

I got some good ones here that I would assume have to fit in our low budget category, although I haven't looked at their actual budgets.

As always, I suggest going into movies knowing nothing about them, but if you need to see trailers first I'll put them here for you.

The Hole in the Ground (2019):

Made in Ireland, I believe, this one had a real Invasion of the Body Snatchers / Invaders from Mars vibe to it. I dug it.

Final Prayer (aka Borderlands) (2015):

I'm pretty sure that they were forced to change the name of this movie because the makers of the game series had a lot more lawyers on their side. The movie is known as "Final Prayer", but the title card still says Borderlands.

Given the religious overtones, the fact that it's a horror movie, and the Lovecraftian vibe which usually just doesn't translate well to screen, I was surprised how much I really, really liked this movie.

Landing: Stuck. I loved the ending of this movie.

Speaking of Lovecraft, this next one is a direct adaptation that I actually thought was done pretty darn well... I wouldn't be surprised if quite a few people have already seen this one. Somehow I missed it back when my brothers and I watched horror movies all the time growing up.

From Beyond (1986):

Lovecraft movies are rarely ever good, but this one wasn't half bad. Jeffrey Combs is always a treat to watch.

Beau is Afraid (2023):

I went into this one completely blind and I'm telling you I really didn't think I was going to make it about 10 or 15 minutes into it. It was very depressing, but then like a light switch being flipped things went bonkers immediately and never looked back. It wasn't until halfway through the movie that I took a break and realized an hour and a half had passed and I still had about another hour and a half to go, but by that time I was happy to see there was still so much more of it.

I will warn you that I hated the ending of the movie. I will be watching some analysis videos on YouTube to see if there was something that I missed here, which could very well be the case since I was watching it on a small laptop screen with tinny speakers and not a lot of volume.

I know it's got some pretty big names in it, and Phoenix himself probably can demand a pretty large payday even for indie films, but $35 Million!!!!

## 3. A 3-Hour Runtime and Shifting Genres
