I know I probably put the fear of god in you about ejecting the drive first, but doing any actual damage to the drive happens so very rarely that I have a hard time believing this is what's just happened to you, even if you did unplug it without ejecting it.

I did have one drive that continued to work fine, but every time I plugged it in after removing it without ejecting first it would give me that error and I had to have Windows fix it before I could open it.


So I need to know exactly what happens when you plug it in. Does Windows make the chime sound that it does when you put a drive in? Does your drive have an LED indicator light (and is it lighting up or flashing)? Do you get any sort of pop-ups at all when plugging in the drive, or does nothing happen at all?


I still want you to try to open the drive in Explorer and see if it shows up there even if nothing happens when you plug the drive in. It's possible that the directions Windows remembers for what to do with that drive were somehow changed, and maybe it's actually being recognized by Windows, but it's not popping up an Explorer window inside of it automatically for you anymore.

That explanation is not the most plausible, but I think it's much more plausable than your drive went bad after only pulling it out without ejecting it first only one time. Especially if your book or any photos you were looking at from the drive were all closed first before you pulled the stick out.

Sometimes windows gets all confused and won't let you eject drives because it erroneously says that there are still files that are in use. Depending on what I'm doing and which drive I'm using, a lot of times I'll just chance it and pull it out anyway (never on anything important like your book though... In that case you should just power the PC down and take it out after it turns off completely).

But make sure you never pull that thing out while you've got your book or any photos or whatever opened on it. Having any of that open AND not ejecting the drive is probably the easiest way to corrupt the data. But even in the case of corrupted data which we could make sure you just back up again, I would still think the drive itself should be fine and at worst would just need a quick format operation. Unless this was just a really unlucky happening, there's just about 0% chance that the drive itself is broken from pulling it early.

I'm calmer now than when that happened.

I put it in and clicked on my hidden icons looking for the stick icon. I went to click it on but top line said devices and such. I clicked that on and brought up file explorer which was devices, then I went my computer and what showed up was some stuff about installing things. When I looked at everything nothing matched and under this computer said, "File f" and it was gray. So, I took it out and left it for a bit and tried again. Still couldn't reach it.

Yanno... sometimes Windows does updates and it can change the way things operate too, even if you don't like the changes, so you might not have actually done anything.

I really think you would benefit from taking a class or two on computers. I'm sure they have to have something local to you that wouldn't cost too much, or might possibly even be free for you. At least in parts of America (and admittedly 20+ years ago), you were allowed to "audit" classes at certain colleges. What that means is that you're able to take the class for free as if you were one of the students paying, but no matter how you do in the class it does not count toward a college degree. That'd be perfect if they had something like that. And they'd very likely have a book for the course that is rather large with a lot of pictures in it describing how to do a ton of tasks.

We just need to get you familiarized with the basics of Windows. Navigating File Explorer and understanding things like hard drives and their assigned letters is really important, and it's really not that complex. Like my friend's dad always used to say about rehabbing houses, "it's not rocket science".

If we can get you to understand what you're looking at (and for) when using File Explorer, I have no doubt that you would confidently be able to find any file on your computer that you would ever need to find, and you would have zero concern with making backups and creating folders to organize your files and backups.



For instance... If you're in Explorer and you notice "C:\" on one of the lines, that's the top (aka Root) directory of your internal computer hard drive. It is where Windows is located, as well as any programs you install later such as Microsoft Word.

If you have a CD or DVD drive on there, that is most likely going to be "D:\".

If you were wondering what happened to "A:\" and "B:\", those were the designations for floppy drives. And I suppose since the original personal computers such as the Apple IIe that I grew up with in grade school didn't even have a hard drive and ran entirely off of the disks you put in the A: or B: floppy drives, that little quirk in the alphabet persists to this day and likely always will.



So if you already have a C: for your internal computer hard drive, and a D: for your CD or DVD drive, the next letter would be E:.

If you plug in your thumb drive, Windows should automatically assign the letter E: to your thumb drive after you insert it, and you should see it show up on the left side as E:\.

If you don't have a CD or DVD drive and all you've got is the internal hard drive, when you plug your stick in, it should show up as D:\ in File Explorer.



So this is what I mean by seeing if you can see the drive in Explorer even if the computer is not behaving the way that it did last week when you plugged the thumb drive in. I'm assuming that it used to open up a File Explorer window that was already inside the drive for you? If that's the case, you don't need that to happen to get to the drive. All you need to do is open up explorer and look on the left hand side for your drive letter.

They've probably got prongs in the other types too. I don't know. I've never seen them before. It's a used fixture with no instructions or no markings denoting the make/model, so I couldn't verify that without buying new bulbs.

And I was making that electric to the cabinet either way, so it really didn't matter. I didn't even think about putting a light up in there until after it was hung and I remembered finding a 2nd night light I got out of really cheap back to school packs they used to sell to all customers once per year for a few years there.


I had two other used fixtures that were in better shape and wouldn't have needed any cleanup before installing, but one was bright bronze and the other was "silver". Neither of them would have worked in the room unless I spray painted them, and I've seen what that spray paint looks like on large surfaces and it would have looked like I spray painted a fixture. It's great for matching hinges and screw heads though.


If I find out that I can use LED bulbs in that fixture down the road, installing a dimmer switch isn't going to be an issue.

Okay. And I think you are right about the computer classes. The local college might have something like that. I can look it up on line.

Yeah. I think it would be a great idea for you. I'm sure they have online things where you can teach yourself, but you might be like me and not give it the attention it deserves if you're teaching yourself on your own time frame without the rigid structure of a class setting. I'm really good at teaching myself things I'm interested in learning, but if I don't have any real interest in it, it's probably not going to be something I learn on my own.


In the meantime, you should plug your drive into your computer. Open up File Explorer. Look on the left "pane" (It's why they call it Windows, afterall...).

You should see something that says "This PC" in that left pane.

Underneath this, it would list out all of your currently attached drives.

You will definately have (C:). If you have a CD/DVD player attached, that would be (D:).

I'd like you to do this and tell me that you see these and you know what I'm talking about.

I'd also like to know that because then we'll know if the thumbstick would be (D:) or (E:). It's almost certainly one of the two.

Got my returns done. Should have done it last night after my dad left, but he stayed pretty late and I didn't feel like it, so I got to do it in the torrential rain today instead. Fun! It seems like it's just going to rain every day forever right now.



More thunderstorms and flood watches tonight. They've mentioned tornadoes, but (hopefully) that will be quite a bit south of me if they do happen.


I may or may not try to install that medicine cabinet today. It's pretty dark in there right now though when the lights are out, and because of that switch I'm adding to the side I'd be working in the dark quite a bit. I'll probably put that off until tomorrow or the day after when it finally stops raining and being crappy outside.

Maybe I'll clean up that hole I made in the back of the cabinet and get some spackle up there and/or finally put the final coat of paint on the towel rack shelf thing and the 2 coats I forgot to paint on the back side of the toilet cabinet today. Not a good day for light with that stuff either, but as long as I'm paying attention I should be able to do that without sunlight.

Nice. The festivities haven't even kicked off for the night yet and the city sewer is not working and the water is halfway up to my maple tree. No hard rain. Just steady rain all day long. Now the thunderstorms are about to start coming in...

Hope the power stays on, or I'm in for a rough night.




Finding it hard to sit still anyhow. Now that my computer project is done, it's hard for me to sit in place and "do nothing".

So I've already been doing some figuring for my medicine cabinet. Looks like just about 12" above the sink basin is probably going to be the best height for it. The back of the 3 glass shades only protrude 3.5" from the wall, while the cabinet itself is 5" from the wall (Only on the very top and very bottom where it protrudes further than the rest of the cabinet. The rest of the cabinet is 4" from the wall, but this is important because of the lamp).


I wasn't going to go this high in the first place since it was obviously at least 3" higher from where the old cabinet was centered, but the dimensions from the floor for standard desired "eye level" had it quite a bit higher. I don't recall the exact number for eye level off the top of my head, but centering my cabinet on it left me just shy of 13" above the basin, which is too close to the glass shades since they don't stick out further, IMO and I really need to go at least 1/2" lower to be able to affix my cabinet to the very top stud of their old frame out, otherwise I have to go out to the garage and cut another one to put on top of the existing one and out as far as the rest of the drywall so the screws weren't just floating in between the cabinet and the new stud.



I found out really quick that I'd better do ALL of the electric for that switch before I put the cabinet in there. I knew I'd have to have the exact height so I knew where to screw the base of the plastic junction box on the side of the cabinet, but I didn't realize just how hard it would be to do an electric box with a switch facing the wall only about 1.5" to 2.0" from the wall. Probably not an impossible task, but one that I'm grateful I just avoided.

So now I've put the entire box together, switch faceplate and all, and wired all my electric back up after I drilled 2 more holes to the side of the existing one so it would just barely clear where I needed it to without anybody ever being able to see that hole from any angle.

And I know the exact length I need for that flex, so I gave myself one additional "loop" of the flex that I can force back in if I need to, but otherwise, the flex conduit has now been attached firmly to studs within 12" of the box as per code.

All I should have to do now is screw the box into the side of the cabinet at the exact necessary height, zip 4 screws through the cab into the massive amount of 2x4's they left me above and below that opening, and snap the box into place and I should be good.



I don't think I'm even going to paint that switch box. It came in a nice color that matches my white trim already, and the front of the cabinet has about a 1.2" lip over the side, so half of that is going to be hidden anyhow. If I decide to paint it after it's all up, no biggie. I'm a big boy and I can cut in without making a mess of everything.

I find this preferable to waiting on a few coats of paint and not being able to get this done tonight anyhow. If I can get that cab up on the wall, my electric is all done in the bathroom except for adding total GFCI protection for the room, and the door and both shelves for that cab are finished so I can have all that put up too.

Although I might put contact paper on the shelves before anything goes back in there for keeps.

Yeah, I need visual as well as just written instructions. Like I said my local college should have something. Even if it costs a bit. It will be worth it in the long run.

I will try that again and hopefully it works when I do it.

If it plays and burns DVDs, it will play and burn CDs as well.

But if you have two separate optical drives, they will be (D:) and (E:), and you'd be looking for (F:) for your thumb drive.

Finished installing the medicine cabinet. All that's left to do now is get it all GFCI protected and we're all wrapped up and up to code.

I got lucky and the stuff that I thought was paint on the finished wood panel backer that the mirror was glued to was actually just toothpaste and came right off with water, so that's clean. I think that single panel looks good in there when you open the cabinet.

Now I can think about getting contact paper up and I'll finally have my bathroom back...

... until I tear up the floor.

Just got a look at that original outlet that I'll be swapping out for a GFCI, and it is not Ivory like I assumed it was. It was white at one point.

Flood water has all been gone for a while now, so my neighbor wasn't joking when he said he'd ridden his bike down to where the pumps were and saw them all moving. I'm going to be finding out what's happening now. It's only happened 3 times in nearly 15 years up until this week. Twice in one week without any crazy, prolonged amounts of rain compared to what I've already lived through only 6 years ago is completely unacceptable.




Anyway...

This is what's making me smile today despite a little water in my basement.





This, obviously, is the inside of the medicine cabinet, which I mentioned I didn't paint because I didn't want to mess with the mirror that had actually been glued to the other side of it. I put it back in the frame as it was after cleaning it up and I think it looks quite nice. Almost a homage to the wood the way that it used to be for another family, at another time, who lived in an entirely different home.

If I do change one thing about what you're seeing, it will be the back of the door handle. I really think I need to take that down and spray the head of the bolt and the washer with my oil rubbed bronze. It's quite busy back there now with that wood panel and the screws, but I think that will look 100% better just by getting the chrome out of the equation.

What do you think???



Here I could have just put my rubber pads on like I do everything else, but I like those old metallic "clicker" door catches. It gives just the smallest amount of resistance so baby couldn't open it if Mama got too close while holding her, and it just gives a satisfying, nostalgic noise when closing or opening the door.

And you can see just a hint of my 2nd switch off to the right side.


Man... I'm really happy with how all this turned out...

She's absolutely gorgeous and better than I ever thought she would be. I have no intention on even painting it unless I get enough people telling me that I should. I won't solicit that from anyone who comes to my house, although since I'm talking about it here feel free to tell me I'm wrong.

Don't know what happened at the bottom of that pic. Sorry about that. It happened to about 80% of the bottom of another shot of the inside of the cabinet that would have been in between the first two as well. I'll have to see if that was the camera going bad or the thumb drive.

Because I've got a new idea...

Since I'm not going to bust down any wall, and the code issue requiring hard pipe coming up through the floor makes one option impossible and the other one much harder than I want to deal with right now, I thought of a 3rd option...

What if I had a 2nd switch to the vanity light underneath or on the right side of the medicine cabinet?

The first switch with the outlet next to it that already exists on the wall would still power all of the electric in the bathroom except for the outlet right next to it, BUT if there were an easily accessible 2nd switch only for the light that didn't look horribly out of place, I could leave the main light switch on all the time and still have power to the electrical outlet I'll be putting in the over the toilet cab when the vanity light is off.

I just can't believe I can't find anything at the local stores or amazon to suit my purposes without spending $60. I don't want to use a standard steel box because that's going to look gaudy no matter where I put it even if I panted it to match the wall or the cabinet. Thin plastic boxes could be good, however, they only seem to sell surface mount which means the hole is in the back. I don't want to be drilling electric through my medicine cabinet for this. They do have plastic boxes that are about 1.25" deep, so I'm considering buying one of those and being extremely careful about drilling a 3/4" hole in the side and then feed the length of flex conduit from the light fixture down to that and through the wall behind the box.

This way I'd have no junction boxes behind the wall and inaccessable (and against code) too. I was going to make things easy on me and put a junction box somewhere in the middle behind the medicine cabinet. I was talking myself into doing this by saying that all you'd have to do to access it is remove 4 screws on the medicine cabinet to take that off, and also that it's a hell of a lot better than the horror show that's behind the wall right now.... But no. I need to do electric right when I come across it, no matter how bad the previous owners screwed me on it.


The plastic box / drilling solution might work, but it's still such a large switch box in the end. I was really hoping to be able to do this in a low-profile way.

5 or 6 years ago, back when I was doing the kitchen, I would have probably spent 3 hours doing that contact paper and every single square millimeter of it would have been cut and applied perfectly.

I ain't got time for that shit anymore.

Took me maybe 10 minutes if I'm being generous.

Perfect is the enemy of good.

I do have to say that except for just the corners of a few of the glass window slats in my dirty ass, non-temperature-controlled garage windows, not a single piece of window privacy film or contact paper on any surface has had a single peel after 4 or 5 or maybe even 6 years now.

Prep-work is still extremely important.

Not whole again just yet.

I forgot I still have to put a final coat on the decorative shelf / towel rack along with a few coats on the primered side of that shelf for the toilet cabinet I totally forgot about. I don't care about that shelf at all outside of finishing the job, but I'm not whole again in the bathroom until I have a good towel rack up there for my hand towels.

Come hell or high water (... possibly, literally...) I will finish painting them tomorrow.

If it plays and burns DVDs, it will play and burn CDs as well.

But if you have two separate optical drives, they will be (D:) and (E:), and you'd be looking for (F:) for your thumb drive.

That was jogging a memory of something that happened to me a while back. Thought it was going to bother me wondering what it was, but it came quick. It was that toilet paper holder that I put in the wall, and the worry I started planting in my head that I may have gotten rid of it during the last dehoard.

I still haven't thrown the old one out because I have a big old stash of metal to scrap between my old hard drives I tore apart for the magnets and discs and the stuff I've pulled out of the bathroom among some other things I had in the garage, so it's just sitting there. What a nasty, ugly old thing with paint all over it.


Makes me almost feel silly putting so much thought and care into everything I work on when I see so many people who just don't really give a crap. That old paper towel holder had more paint on it than the damn vanity light did, and that's saying something.



And I guess, when your entire room or your entire house looks like that, nothing looks as bad as it really is.


Hell... I remember when I first moved in here the feeling that it didn't matter how much time I spent cleaning anything up because it wouldn't matter. It was the same feeling that I had when I lived at my grandma's for years with the 7 cats that had pretty much destroyed all the nice furniture and every piece of doorway trim in the house.


I do see the appeal though...

When you live like a pig in a crappy house, you don't even notice it and it's easy to justify not keeping up with keeping things clean. And on the opposite side of that, I have finished rooms in my house that I almost treat like museum pieces... just like my mom and step dad did. I always hated that growing up. Rooms that weren't meant to be enjoyed. Couches that weren't meant to be sit upon.


The worst is my back porch room. It's objectively a million times better than it was before my friend came over and we jacked up the whole thing and fixed it literally from the ground up. Awesome windows in place of single pane crap that let all the water in to destroy the place. Awesome paint job on everything. Beautiful fake fireplace heater to keep the place heated in the cold months if I want to. Even got a TV hooked up to my network out there. My aunt said that she'd spend every possible day she could year round in that room.

Since I owned the house and up until I fixed it, that back porch was my favorite room in the house. And I haven't spent even 15 minutes of leisure time inside that room since it's been fished. Now it's just a pass-through when I come and go. By far, I've spent way more time vaccuming out there than I have sitting.

It's all because I can't smoke out there anymore.

Now I just do that in the attic during the cold months, which was a serious downgrade from the porch, even when there was a gaping hole in the floor.




But in the bathroom, I think it's going to be a different story and I'll be very happy I did it. That's just a room that never looked clean no matter how much time you spent cleaning things in there. It was always just gross, and even worse, it was at least 1 if not 2 prior families' gross as well as mine.


Mowing the lawn is my least favorite chore outside of cleaning the toilet and the tub. But I bet you that changes when I pay for my own really nice high-boy toilet. I bet I'll even start keeping the tub that I didn't buy clean when the rest of the room can actually look great.


That would be nice. My dirty ass bathroom is one of the major things that usually keeps me from wanting to have any impromptu visits from people. And with a 2nd potential bathroom that hasn't been good for anything but a dude doing number one for probably alm

Me too SIX. I've been working out how much I can swing to pay my dentist for replacing this crown on a front tooth.


I like to think the little messes I have like the kitchen table which I clean off pieces of it then mess it up again. Doesn't bother me. I've got another scattered spots that need cleaning up for sure. Like you the bathroom is a major one and the kitchen sink and the stove top. (Stove top I really hate cleaning.) Then there is a bunch of stuff on my trunk that has to be sorted. I know some of it can go into the bin that I am going to put my nails and such in. That is whenever I get to it.

With me a lot of it is depression and I know that. Also I would love a couch and replace my computer chair but it is getting the help to do it all. Very frustrating.

Kinda hard to tell. Nothing's obviously wrong... no infection at the surgical site, no fever ... but she's not eating or drinking today, and her breathing is faster than usual for her. Plus she's been glued to hubby all day. I mean literally needing to be in physical contact with him, like an annoying 10-lb anchor.

She IS a clingy dog. And she DOES go thru periods of inappetance when I sometimes resort to squirting water in her mouth to keep her hydrated, so I've started squirting plain chicken broth.

It just occurs to me that I was robbed of that sensation and I can't even really empathize. The only dog I ever had was given away on a weekend with our dad. She determined it was a problem and did not put it to a vote with anyone. One day he's there, one day's he's gone. Tough shit.

I've never owned a dog since. Never lived with anyone who owned a dog. Lots of cats, but no dogs. And even though I didn't care for more than about two of those, I wasn't around when they started going either.

I've had a turtle vanish into thin air. That thing had been living there for well over 5 years after we were living at my grandma's part-time regularly, and somehow it got out and was gone. I cleaned that place from the basement to the rafters and there was no dead turtle anywhere. I'm thinking the more likely story is that my aunt or uncle knew somebody who wanted a turtle and they gave them the turtle. We weren't going there much with all the family drama at the time anyhow.

Had a cocatoo that flew away twice. Somehow my uncle got him when he found him singing in a tree across the street. He was shaken up but he was alright. Happened a second time and never saw it again. I think a guinea pig died on us... but that thing had the personality of a wet noodle.

I'm going to be 47 soon and I've never a had a legit pet die on me before.

I love dogs. I can only imagine what you're going through Sigs.



Maybe if I get my house put together right and get a proper fence out there, I could get into dog-sitting and dog-walking. I couldn't imagine a better job than that.

Me and my sisters have always had lots of pets, both as children and as adults. I've had pets die on me, and had to euthanize a few. When I was a child I cried when our pet died, but those were child's tears.

As an adult, I'd say that I cared for ALL of my pets to the best of my ability, but there were only a few that I felt loss when they died bc they were my favorites.

If anyone thinks it's unfair to have favorites, I noticed that animals have their favorites too! There's a real bond between some people and some animals when they're sympatico.


Our previous long-term dog was a Samoyed from the pound. She bonded to me. My MIL, who was living with us for a while and who actually took care of her, was a little pissed off. "I feed her, I take her for walks, I even pick up her shit, and who does she like???"

Our current dog, a little 10-lb rat terrier/ chihuahua mix, is glued to hubby. I'm just an alternate when hubby isn't around.

She's brought dear daughter out of her shell, tho. Now dear daughter oohs and ahs over every cute dog she sees, and - following my example- she asks every owner about their dog.

But I do feel responsible for the dog and right now I'm worried. I've done everything that I can for her, gave her her antibiotics, pain med, antacid, and anti-inflammatory. The incision looks good. I think the surgery went OK, but something else is wrong, poor puppy. I know she has a heart murmur, maybe it's progressed to heart failure? I have a senior dog wellness check scheduled for a couple of weeks from now.

BTW, animal health care is expensive!!

Instead of worrying I went online for symptoms of canine heart failure. Doggie didn't check many of the boxes, so altho I know for a fact she has a heart murmur, it's not critical.

Her incision looks looks good and the prolapse and swelling has gone down, and WARNING, TMI: she's peeing and pooping OK, at this point it looks mostly like anxiety. We were paying attention to her and petting her when she whined and shivered, do we were unintentionally rewarding her for acting thst way. So the next time she tried to climb onto hubby's lap he kind of dumped her off and said “No" and after a few repeats she's not behaving so anxiously. She also took me for a BRISK walk so if she's exercise intolerant it sure doesn't show!

But she still needs her meds. Just one more dose tonight and that'll be it.

SIX, euthanasia has come a long way since the days of taking your dog out back with a rifle. The last time I had to euthanize a pet, they allowed me to be there, injected a sedative, and while she was purring under my hands gave her a jolt of potassium to stop her heart. We have to live with the memory, but pets have no idea what's coming and aren't scared.

I've had to mercy kill a couple of that cat's victims tho. Fortunately hubby had a hand ax that I could use. Eeew, but necessary. (Still, eeew!)

And at this point, I BETTER have a mature outlook! I would hope these gray hairs have gotten me SOMETHING!

Maturity... something to look forward to!

Hehe... I remember Axle the bull terrier pulling my mom all over the place. He didn't get a lot of exercise if I wasn't around.

My dad gave me a pretty great idea when he saw the bathroom and I've kinda been half-assing that work today.

I'm not sure if any of the pictures showed it at all or even if I mentioned it yet, but because of how the vanity and basin were already set, there was a gap between the wall and the right side of the basin. I had addressed this underneath the basin by framing the vanity out to the wall with that painted cabinet trim, but just kind of hoped nobody would notice that there was the gap up above because I didn't have a good answer for it.

Likely because of how great the whole room looked compared to the truck stop bathroom he'd occasionally be forced to use from time to time over the last 14 years before he went on his one-man vacation, this was the only thing that he did notice, of course.

But, unlike most people who offer complaints without any solutions, he had a good one for me. First and only suggestion right after the criticism, and it was a banger...

He asked me if I had any more of that cabinet trim and if I could just frame that gap out...


Yes. Yes, I do believe that I can...






And it's funny because I knew I had that trim, and I remember thinking about that and even putting some pieces up there, but for some reason I'd just pushed that idea aside because I didn't like it at the time and it never came up again until Dad suggested it.

Maybe when I was thinking about doing that, the wall still hadn't been painted. I know that the cabinets weren't up yet, but this would have been all the way back when the walls were a gross off-white and I was making the trim for the vanity that I had just finished painting. Perhaps with that gross, nicotine (and "other") stained wall, I wasn't able to really visualize it at the time.

I've got a pretty darn good imagination and I'm able to visualize a lot of this stuff long before it actually gets done. But you just have blind spots sometimes. For whatever reason, I felt that idea was so bad at the time I was holding scrap pieces up there that I'd completely purged it from my memory banks and I didn't put a pin in it until the job was done like I should have.

Good lookin' out, Dad. I appreciate ya not holding your tongue and keeping the criticism to yourself.




Goddamn am I happy I found my knockoff Dremmel out in the garage a few weeks ago, or I don't even want to think about the solution I'd have come up with to make it fit toward the front where it wasn't gonna fit.




Even rounded off the top of the small back piece, and now that I'm looking at the front I think I'm going to do it there as well.




And somewhere in the midst of all of this, I managed to finally wrap up the electric in that room once and for all. Lots of small annoyances with that, just like everything else that Uncle Bob did, but I finally got the switch and outlet in there FIRMLY and sticking out far enough. Nothing some extra nuts and a bit of trial and error couldn't fix.

Tested everything with my tester and it all works exactly as designed. The GFCI will trip for any problem with any single bit of electric in that room and shut it all down. Pay a few more bucks for one of those testers like I did and it's got a button on it that you can press while it's plugged into any outlet and it will trip the GFCI if the circuit is protected. With the wall switch off, the only thing that is powered in the room is the GFCI outlet. I think maybe you seeing the wood handles on the faucet may have made you think that, even subconsciously? Good eye, if that's the case, because if I were keeping that faucet I believe I may have thought of doing that myself already.

I may not have mentioned it at all before, but I'm replacing that faucet. It's broke, and so is the drain in the basin. I will be replacing all of that with Oil Rubbed Bronze finish.

There is no wood grain tone anywhere in that picture in the future reality. Just a larger oil rubbed bronze faucet that matches my vanity light and the cabinet hardware.


But...

There is the wood grain on the backer board for the mirror inside the medicine cabinet...

No... that's pretty light wood in there. Much lighter than wood that I'd want to put on the wall there, so I couldn't even use that to justify it.



I'll have to sleep on it. Wasn't going to stay up all night painting anyway. But I should have everything that still needs to be painted the dark grey ready for their final paint and any touchups tomorrow. That should theoretically be everything once I've finished that and hung the towel rack shelf.


I am considering the possibility of adding several "holders" underneath the medicine cabinet and above the faucet. I always had them in my houses growing up and just kind of took them for granted until I was living here and didn't have them.

But I'll have to see if that's a bad idea that might take away from the value of the bathroom. I don't know about people's personal tastes on things like that when they're buying a home. I know I'd take good care of them, but even if they look great at selling time, unless you put it in there yourself or paid somebody else to do it for you, you know that other people have had their mouth germs from their toothbrushes in there. Especially after everybody endured Covid, I think these are good questions for me to be asking. I think if I find that issue is even 50/50 online I'm going to do without it and maybe buy something that can just sit on the basin or be hung temporarily that won't damage the wall long term.

I actually really like that design vs. the first 3 or 4 pages of results I looked at, but the price is way too cheap.

I already kinda cheaped out with that kitchen faucet and consider myself pretty lucky how good that faucet has held up over the years so far, but I know not to abuse it. As cheap as I am, $35 for a bathroom faucet in a world where I couldn't go to McDonalds and not leave hungry unless I spent $10 doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

I absolutely hate, hate, hate, hate, hate plumbing and I'm only doing this once!

Electric is fun. (At least in America it is...)

If you're playing fast and loose, you might decide that the time and effort spent finding the right breaker and flipping it first isn't worth it and you're making a gamble that everything goes smooth and you don't don't teach yourself a good lesson that you still haven't learned from the last time or two or twenty-two that you were taught it and it didn't stick.

But as long as you aren't standing in a puddle in your basement or ankle deep in tub water while you're doing it, you're probably going to be alright.

And if you screw something up, as long as you know the basics and have been putting safety and code first, the worst thing that happens is you have to do figure out what you did wrong, connect up all the bits the right way and fire it up again.


You mess up plumbing???... now you've got a big wet mess on your hands. 100 times as bad if we're talking about drainage or toilets and not just the clean supply-side water for the faucet.

Everything about plumbing is just awful. I still do everything myself up to and including swapping out sump pumps in my boxers, knee deep in freezing cold water, because that's how cheap I am.

But nearly every time I've ever have had to deal with plumbing, it was a different problem that required learning something new I'll probably never need to know again, and it's rarely ever been something I can bring to the next plumbing issue I've had to deal with. And at least half of those times it was in the middle of a goddamned mini-catastrophy too, so the added pressure is always fun.


Me? I'll take the occasional stupidity-reminder zap over working with water any day. I tip my hats to plumbers. I know it ain't rocket science and after 20+ years of mastering the trade it's all super easy to do, but for those of us who don't have those skills what you do is a godsend.

People don't really know, until they really know.

And most of 'em will never know.



PS (OR PSA): I do not suggest or condone swapping out any outlets or switches while the breaker is still on. Do not do that. It's something that a guy taught me a LONG time ago and how to do it carefully, but 20 years later it didn't miss me that he never worked on electric without the breaker being off first.

Not gonna lie... I thought about doing it today. In fact, I did get the old switch off with the breaker on, and I was 2/3rds of the way getting the old outlet off too... but the reason I turned off the breaker was hidden in that unexpected fraction...

Because, ya see... I should have only been 1/2 way done with the job.

But they did that thing I HATE (and should be against code if it isn't) where they just remove some of the coating off the neutral wire and wrap that around one single screw on the outlet and just continue to fish it down the line without ever cutting it.

Why shouldn't you do that if it works?

First off... Stop being lazy and just do it the right way.

But for real, Because, just as I knew was going to happen, I had abnormally short neutral wires I now had to tie back into the new GFCI outlet. And they NEEDED to be separate on the GFCI because the LOAD lines to the light and 2nd outlet are run from an entirely separate point on the back of the outlet from the LINE in hot/neutral on a GFCI. It's not just two separate screws that attach to the very same metal bar on the Neutral side of a normal outlet (the very reason it works just fine the wrong way on normal outlets).

I still did it without making pigtails since I've attached outlets to wires much shorter than this before (not in my house or of my own accord), but seeing stuff like this in old houses is what's so annoying about doing electric work in them.

Although... it is fun too.

Oh, I'm 100% on dark color for the trim! It'll look like it's an intentional part of the cabinet.

And I like the look of the faucet that you're aiming for too. I hate those midget faucets that were so common back then. IDK if there's much difference between vanity faucet models, but when we had to replace the kitchen sink faucet I looked pretty hard at the dimensions and specifically bought one that not only had a high arch but also came out over the sink farther. That way, there's less splash behind when you put something into the stream. And BTW Delta won by 1".

I thought last month was bad! Back in May, hubby had a trial spinal block and a followup, a Zio monitor for 2 weeks, a couple of presurgical appointments and serious sinus surgery. Daughter had a telemed and an ultrasound, and the van went in for service.

THIS month was worse! I developed a big lump on my leg, hubby's root canal crown fell off, our AC started leaking thru the ceiling, I had a followup with my internist and oncologist, two knee injections, foot X-rays (arthritis in both feet, which explains why they hurt), the van crapped out, the dog had a prolapse and required an emergency spay, the AC people found rats in the attic crawl space, hubby had another spinal block, and a sinus surgery followup. I have the pest control people here today, and long overdue followup with my nephrologist tomorrow. Hubby and I have dermatology appointments at the end of the month, and I'm due for an abdominal ultrasound same day.

Some of that is my fault. I am determined to get all the family ailments and complaints addressed to the best of my ability. The regular followups were just coincidental scheduling, and then there were emergencies.

But boy, I am so glad this effing month is almost over!

Maybe now I can stop the backward trend on everything else (decluttering, yardwork, financial plan) and maybe start making progress!

I'll put it in real simple terms...

Most electricity in most homes in America is very likely to give you shocks for being a dummy, but it probably won't kill you. Electricity flows like water and switches are Dams. GFCIs are dummy-proofed and automated dams. But unlike water, electricity doesn't make a big gross effing mess if you screw it up.

Maybe if it's further into the bowl like you suggest, that won't be such an issue.

I'm also hoping that it's easier to clean back behind the new one than it is the current one. It's really designed poorly all around before you even talk about how the drain pull is broke. And the gap behind the faucet and the back of that basin is too small for me to put anything but my pinky finger back there when I'm cleaning with rags.

Would you know what a good price point for a bathroom faucet is today?

Unfortunately, I had a look at all of the faucets that I've saved and none of those are going anywhere in my house. The few that are in great shape and appear to be good quality are nowhere near the right color. So I am going to have to buy one of these.

I could take the oil-rubbed bronze faucet off of the pedestal sink my friend gave me if it fits, but then when I do the basement I'll have to buy a new faucet anyhow, so I might as well shop for the one I like. I don't know why I didn't factor in this cost at all on the job when I knew I needed to do it. Probably because I had so much of what I needed and just assumed the faucet was covered too until I figured out it wasn't.

I'm still at only around $50 for the whole job so far though, and over $30 of that was the 50 feet of 3/8" flex pipe I needed to buy for a 3 foot length. (Don't worry... most of the rest if not all of it will be used in the crawl space when I work on my dual sump pump solution).

Oh... don't apologize, Brenda. I was just laughing because I already had 3 choices and now I had 4. It only bothered me because it wasn't a bad suggestion and it was something new to think about when I already had a big choice to make.

I think I am going to go with the dark grey, but out of the 4 choices I think that staining and putting some shiny poly on it would have been my 2nd choice in the end. White would be 3rd place. It would have really let everyone know that sink is very off-white and the light grey on the walls was in last place because I hate having any trim and wall colors that are touching with the same color paint.

I actually got a different answer from everyone on this. You said wood. Sigs said dark gray. My dad originally said light grey to blend it into the wall, but when I later showed him the pic with the primer piece in there and explained why I didn't like light grey or why the white wouldn't look good up against the sink, he said he thought the white would look great (and added "Don't hate me" with a smiley face).


So between 3 different people the three options I originally had and a new option were all picked.

I don't think i could have planned that to happen, and it probably will never happen again.





In the end, I just told him. "Whatever I do, I'm sure it's going to look good. Really, really good.".

I think I am going with the cabinet dark grey for sure now. When I pictured what that would look like in my mind, and even when I was right in the room but looking at it all from way above it, that didn't click in my head.

But when I showed that last picture from a much lower angle and had a new perspective on how that trim is actually going to look with it, it all kind of clicked for me.

It's hard to explain what I mean sometimes until after it's done, but I think that Sigs got exactly what I mean in her reply. What I first saw when thinking about going dark grey with that piece was just a little oddly shaped snake that came from the front of the cabinet and worked it's way along the wall like ivy and up the back of the basin where it ended.

I was still considering it while looking at it this way, and figured it would probably end up tying nicely into the medicince cabinet above in an interesting way... but I wasn't sold still that I wasn't going to regret it after I put it up.

But then when I saw it from that lower angle in that last shot I took after I finished the electric and looked at it after posting it here, it all clicked for me. It's not going to look like an interesting little snake that people wonder why I made that choice. I mean, from one angle I do believe that is exactly what it will look like, but from almost any perspective once it's up there, it should look as if that either was a part of the cabinet itself, or there was a quarter inch thick piece of wood as a backsplash along that entire wall behind the cabinet. That the tie in, and now that I see this in my head I know it's going to look great and nobody will be questioning that color choice.

This whole thing is an exercise in trying to get info from different perspectives, and that's even my own. The crazy thing about those two pieces of trim up there is that they're still up there exactly where I put them yesterday and there's not a single thing holding any of that up other than friction. It's not as tight as it was, but the first time I got it in there I was worried I wasn't going to be able to pull it back out and that was it. I shaved it down a little bit, but I'm going to have to be mindful of the amount of paint I put on it. Need enough to cover everything so I'm not cutting in touchups right up to the basin, but I can't have so much on it that it all peels right off as I put the piece in where it belongs.

As nice as it is having that thing in there tight and not ever in any danger of falling back there where I would literally never be able to get it back, I may have to consider doing a bit more wood removal so I don't have any post-paint problems. This could actually end up being a fairly difficult piece to hang since there is nowhere I could put a nail for support and the fact that it's wide in the back where it could fall and never be retrieved, but it's tight in the front. Everything has got to be level to the surface of the sink or it's going to look terrible.

I'm not going to enjoy doing it, but I might end up drilling a pilot hole in the back toward the top so I can have a screw in there to prevent my trim from ever falling back there. I don't think I could get it high enough to actually support the piece where it needs to ultimately be, but at least with that back there it takes away the stress of the possibility of losing the piece when I only have enough of that trim to make one more piece if I screw it up.

Not a fun couple of days. It started yesterday with a bad, bad reaction I had to onions my boss was cutting up. Usually I don't react at all but yesterday it must have been the amount of them and the heat in the kitchen that I had a hard time breathing. Finally at one point I told her that I had to get out of the kitchen. I took what I was doing into the dining room and it was like I can breath again.

Again I haven't had a reaction like that to onions and their oils for years. Not fun.


And then this morning the power went out at around 9:30 give or take and came back on around noon. One side of the street with local mall and Walmart was dark while the other side had power. The library was open and other places. At least I could get a coffee at the Tim Horton's. Closest to what I was doing. Have to look up and see what happened.

Walking down 9 flights of stairs in the dark also not fun.

I finally got the 3rd coat on the towel rack and shelf painted.

I also sanded down the back of the toilet cab that I needed to repair when I put the damn drill right through it. Unfourtunately, because it's made of shit somewhere in between cardboard and pressed wood, it's not going to be a perfect fix. I would have to take the whole thing down and rip the whole back off and redo it with better wood stock, but I'm not doing that. I'm not going to beat myself up about it too much. It should be fine.

Got the two pieces of trim painted up and ready to go once they dry.

I'll probably at least attempt installing this stuff tonight, but I don't want to force the paint drying. It's really cool in my house right now for once and I haven't had the air on for 2 or 3 days so it's probably a little more humid in here right now that I realize too. No reason to force anything. That's how you put holes in stuff you don't want holes in.

If I didn't miss any touch-ups, and I don't believe I did, painting in the bathroom should be all done except for the baseboard whenever I get around to redoing the floor.

If things dry well and I don't have too many problems, Everything should be installed tonight as well. The only time I should have to bust that color paint out again is to touch up any brad nails I put in that last bit of trim.


I already found the 3 seashells I'm going to put on the shelf too. Had about 5 or 6 really good ones to choose from. I had to put a smooth one in there because the other two look like they'd be painful and the other one I really wanted to put up there would make three very painful looking seashells.

I wish they were all a little bit larger though. I'll probably have to put more stuff up on that thing after the joke wore off.

I've never had a severe allergic recreation before. I know I've developed minor irritating ones over the years since my nose gets all itchy when mowing and sometimes I even get watery eyes on some days, but nothing more than minor annoyances.

I guess the only thing I could try to compare that to would be having an 8cm growth in my lung a few months ago.

That certainly wasn't fun.

So am I. All I could do this morning before I walked down the stairs was take my meds.

Trust me. You don't want to know what an almost sever allergic reaction can do. I discovered my allergy to onions a few years ago. I was renting a room and the lady who owned the house was cutting up and cooking a bunch of onions one day. I got back and the oils were still in the air. Got to my room and then ran for my allergy eye drops which helped.

Yesterday, I had put in my eye drops before I left but not fun at all.

Anything to do with lungs isn't good. And I'm glad your lung problem cleared up without surgery.

I used to have reactive asthma and perfumes would really set it off.
May I suggest montelukast in pill form? It's controlled my asthma almost 100%, I no longer need a rescue or steroid inhaler.

Also, curiously, it's to some extent psychological. Since I've lost my sense of smell I no longer react to odors. Yes, people react physiologically to odors, even without any specific allergic or toxic effect. It's part of our bodies' immediate, automatic defense mechanism. Odors can give us headaches, make us wheeze, and make us vomit.

So, my summer schedule (for now) is that I head outside for yardwork in the AM, then come inside to take a break, clean up the kitchen, and start dinner. Once that's done I have a couple of hours for whatever project I'm working on indoors, which right now is decluttering. For the past couple days I dug up all the puncture vine I could find, plus most of the tall weeds, then I went thru my side of the closet and pulled out everything I no longer use and have no intention of using and I boxed it up. There was only one medium-sized box bc I'm not much of a hoarder.

Today more weeding out front, then go thru the office/ storage room and recycle or donate all the bottles and containers, respectively, that I won't be using. I think after that I'm going to rake/ sweep the driveway and clear the gutter, and tackle dear daughter's room. But rather than frame it as "keep/ donate/ trash" we're just going to separate it into "using/ not using" and keep it like that. (One step towards heading out the door.)

Also need to look for the next few e-waste events. Hubby has enough to stock a computer store!

The Interior did see some for sure and some of the rain did carry over the Rockies into Alberta.

We suffered an act of god the other night. I never lived through anything like it before. I told my friend that God was trying to kill a motherf*er.

Power was down for almost 3 days and trees and poles were knocked down everywhere. My biggest damage, thankfully, was just a little water in my basement, two ripped window screens and the anchor that ties into your house that keeps the weight off of the electrical wires. Oh and my coaxial internet cable came down from a pole they had it on in between the wires and my house and now it's just draped over my garage and laying on the ground for about 6 feet before going to my house. Miraculously it still works! Glad about that since I can't even get somebody to come out to fix it until next week.

So much hail came down at such a force, I can't believe none of my windows broke. It was a cool night, but I couldn't believe that 8 hours later I still saw piles of melting hail that looked like snowmen had melted there.

I was up in my attic pulling some stuff down when it came out of nowhere. No air raid sirens, no nothing. Then out of nowhere, the roof of my house was getting pummeled with the heaviest hail I've heard. And I'm hearing booming noises outside. I ran for the window looking out over my front porch and all I saw through the hail and wet window with leaves plastered on it was a glowing blue light. (I still don't know what that was).

By the time I got downstairs, I was hearing hail hit my windows, HARD!

Then something hit one of the windows REALLY HARD and I can't believe it didn't break. That turned out to be about 20% of my neighbor's tree that thankfully must have hit the ground on the leaves end first and flipped up and whipped into the window. If it flew from the tree directly into my window, I'm pretty sure it would have looked like that scene from Poltergiest.

Thankfully, my generator worked beautifully. I even found out that I could fish my 100ft orange extension cord into the house and I have no problem powering both the fridge and sump off of it, so that's awesome to know when I've got about $2k worth of banked insulin in the fridge.

I ran out of gas though at 2:30 AM that first night. I had enough to put some in, but I had to go get some. That is when I knew I was f#@(!.

Barricades everywhere. At first, I didn't even think that I could go anywhere, but then I was able to go around one of them and the street was clear (I think that was more a double-buffer to keep people who didn't need to be in that area at all out, rather than one to keep people who lived there in).

When I tried going around the other way first I was shocked at what my headlights revealed. It looked like a tornado hit. Powerlines down in the middle of the street and trees and branches everywhere.

Ultimately, after doubling back when the main road was clearly dark as the eye could see, I went the other way and had to drive almost 7 miles to find a working gas station. The girl there didn't seem dumb, so I don't think it was her fault, but I had to go back in THREE TIMES and ultimately I decided to use a different pump and finally got my gas.


That generator just saved my house, and possibly my life. I have no idea how many times it powered the sump in 3 days, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were over 500, or even double that.

I've heard that there are houses in the area that were completely destroyed. Some people have said that there was a tornado, but I don't see official confirmation of that. Whatever it is, it was an act of god.



I'm looking at the positives here...

1. My damage was very minimal.

2. I found out I can easily power both my sump pump and fridge on my generator without any obvious signs of distress when the sump kicks on. Once I get my plug outlet outside that can feed electric into my whole house directly, I will be trying to load new things ont

Yeah... It was really crazy. I thought I had it pretty bad until I realized just how bad it actually was. That generator was the only reason my house didn't get destroyed. During the storm and for hours after it, that pump was going off every minute or two. Even 2 days later before the power came back on, it was still going off every 8 minutes between cycles.

I'm pretty sure the reporter didn't know what she was talking about at the end there, saying that it would be the homeowner's responsibility to get rid of that tree that had fallen from the curb onto their house. Most likely she was given bogus information from a very frustrated homeowner, who likely had gotten bad information from a low-level employee from one outfit or another who gave her bad info.

Despite being down nearly 3 days, I can't be mad at the power company or the city or really anybody involved. I think they did a great job considering how bad everything had gotten, and I think that people in general were really good about helping each other out and getting through it. It was probably the first time a lot of them have been out of their house for anything other than work and grocery shopping since Covid.

They've had crews all over the place cutting down trees and cutting away any limbs in the vicinity of power lines and although in many cases I'm sure the homeowner was responsible for then bringing them to the curb to be collected.


When I saw an AT&T guy out there, I asked him to come verify for absolute sure that the cable that had fallen was just the coax (since it looks different outside) and he's the one who noticed my wall anchor had been ripped from my house. He told me that I'd probably have to pay an electrician $500 to get that fixed proper.

I called the power company on that and they said they would eventually get somebody over to look at it, but when I saw those crews and showed it to them, I went back to work and 20 minutes later it was already fixed for free.

I think I just lucked out.

I called my neighbor across the street yesterday to let him know I'd come over tomorrow and get all the limbs out to the curb for him. He was just about to pay a tree guy to come over and cut down a problem tree, but then the city came around and cut all the problem parts away for free but left them behind, in front and on the side of the garage behind a big wooden fence. He said his daughter and grandson were going to work on it yesterday. I've met his daughter before, but never the kid. Kid must be strong, because I didn't think his daughter would be able to do all that much, but if they didn't get all of it they got a great deal of it up in front. His truck is parked in the driveway for the first time in days and it's all swept up too, so they might have gotten all of it.

If I wasn't aching from thigh to shoulder from the 13 hours of yard work the other day, I wouldn't feel so relieved right now. This is the guy who made the missing drawer faces for me in his garage. We've done small favors for each other over the years, but I kinda wanted to really pay him back for that and also not feel guilty asking him for his advice and probably a little help doing the stair banisters. I mentioned those to him yesterday while we were on the phone and he said that's no problem. Whenever I'm ready, but after he heals up. He would probably have done all of that cleanup himself, even at his age, but he just had an angioplasty and he's walking around with his arm in a sleeve and dried blood on his hand.

I still have to mow my back yard and do a few other things before we get hit 5 straight days near 100 degrees, so now I won't have to break my back getting everything done before the brutal heat makes its way back to us.

This summer really sucks.

Grizzlies are quite common in Alberta but that was a little strange. They don't usually come that close. But the lady did all the right things. Make herself appear larger and make a lot of loud noises. The people at the camp ground heard her and came out to help.

IMHO the bear wasn't behaving like it was protecting cubs bc usually momma bear sends cubs up a tree and tries to stay between cubs and threat.

I noticed, parenthetically, that her dog was very, very quiet. Quite possibly the dog was the real target. When we're walking, my small dog sometimes attracts scary attention from big dogs. We have on occasion been stalked, lunged at, and attacked (once). That's what the bear's behavior looked like to me ne.

The most effective way in my experience to disrupt the threatening dog's intention is to pick my dog up. She immediately becomes almost invisible as a target. And, of course, you never, ever, turn your back on a threatening dog. Or bear, apparently!

IDK how big her dog is, but I think it's a good thing it was quiet bc if it was yapping its head off, it would simply have attracted more attention.

Got some of my stuff done today. Mowed the back lawn and pulled all the weeds off the driveway and swept it up.

I'm not even supposed to have 3 huge trash bins, but I lucked into an extra one years ago. I only ever put 2 out on the curb because I'm afraid they'll take the extra one away from me if I do, so I've already got one full bin that won't get picked up on trash day. I had to use a 55 gallon black bag just to put the debris from my driveway into, and it just barely fit. Thankfully they took all the big stuff or I'd be getting rid of that over the next 2 months.

Everything is pretty much done now except for the sidewalk and the curb on one side of the house. I wanted to spray for poison after I was done, but it started getting really windy and looked like rain. Checked online and there was enough of a chance tonight to talk me out of it.

Got my grocery shopping done and I'm doing nothing the rest of the night.


Probably won't be doing much at all for the next 5 days while the high is over 100 degrees with the Real Feel.

It took me about 1.5 hours today, and between today and this week I've filled up three 95 gal greenwaste bins. Almost back to where we were a month ago.

I don't know whether to be pleased or unhappy.

I didn't even start mowing the front lawn until around 7PM. My across the street neighbor had been offering me his really nice lawn mower last year, but I needed the exercise from my push mower anyway and haven't been asking him for it this year. He must have really appreciated the work he saw me doing all day because he came out with his hand strapped to his side and blood caked on it to offer me his mower.

I got up early for a change and started working at 7AM. Had to get all the limbs and branches from Evil Tree out of my back yard and to the curb. Mind you, my land is something like 36,000 or 39,000 sq. ft., which might clue you in to just how far I had to go to get all that to the curb. At least I had my trusty big boy wagon to help with the giant ones. Took forever to clean up all the debris though. Then I did the same in the front, which was even worse because that had the side of the house with 15 to 20% of Evil Tree all along side of it. Must have been picking up branches at least 5 or 6 hours of that time. My inner thighs are on fire right now. Working about 7 hours today probably didn't help.

I also pulled all the weeds in the river rock hoasta beds. The moles have absolutely ruined that, so if I don't spray, I'm getting weeds again. At least not nearly as many as I got when it was bare dirt, but enough to make me remember how much I hate this cursed house every time I look at it.

Then I edged the hoasta beds with my hands. It's been a few years, and because of the moles and the ants and all the water the lip that was dry and completely visible on the edge of it the first 4 years I lived here is just covered in wet mud and weeds now. I just rolled that up like sod and threw it away. I also swept up the street and the curb and got my sewer completely cleaned out and swept my walkway.

The front lawn was the last thing I finished.

I was cooked. I really don't even remember yesterday or last night all that much. I got a lot of sleep that I don't usually get. I needed it, because I don't feel like I got all that much. Finger's crossed I'm not up all night again.

Nah... I get way more than I should. I might have kept my mind busy for 2 years on that project, but a big part of the reason that everything I've been doing the last few days has been so difficult is because I wasn't keeping my body busy.

I don't know if "enjoy" is the right word. I'm pretty sure Monday and Tuesday should be okay, but once 3 days of this temp come by us it's really struggling to keep up and we've got 5 of them, with the 6th being 88 degrees.

I might have to go outside every once in a while just to remind myself how good I still have it and that I spent 10 years in my house with a few summers even hotter than this without any A/C at all.

We don't do the green bins here. I know they do them on the south side of Chicago and in Evergreen Park, but I don't think they do them in Oak Lawn, which is just a little further away from Chicago. It wouldn't surprise me if Orland Park did it too, even though they're pretty far away, but I think you'd have to go to the more Northern suburbs of Chicago to get a lot of green bins. I never had them growing up, and I know my grandma didn't get them until sometime after I wasn't living there anymore. In most of Illinois, you pay for that privilege. I remember the good old days of having to go to the grocery store to buy leaf bags, and then having to put stickers on each bag that were $0.75 each from the same grocery store, and all of that money was just a tax the city collected from us. Illegal to burn them too... how about that?

Boy... back when I had 3 Silver Maples instead of just 1 along with all of the neighborhood leaves on my lawn, I wouldn't be surprised if it was more than 100 leaf bags to get that job done. That'd been over $75 just to get my leaves carted away... back in the late 1990's.

Out here we just throw branches in with the trash if they're small enough, or cut them to 4 feet and leave them on the curb. This storm was thankfully a rare exception to the 4 foot rule. I thought I'd have to wait a week to test that theory out, but boy am I glad I pulled all that out on the morning that I did because 3 hours later it was all gone. Watched them come with some cool truck that had this pinching shovel thing on the end and he was just scooping them up with all the power you wish those scam crane game cranes had. And he was just putting them all into the big dump truck that was driving around with him. Boy, would I have been mad at myself if I missed that opportunity.

How on earth did you fill up three 95 gallon bins without any storms that you're screaming about???? Is that lawn clippings too???

With how slow I'm moving these days, I'm just imagining you out there like Betty White on crack running circles around me.

You can walk your dog in grizzly country but I wonder. For it to get so close to a person, maybe the bear had cubs near by. I think it is still breeding season and so that could be why the bear responded like it did.

IMHO the bear wasn't behaving like it was protecting cubs bc usually momma bear sends cubs up a tree and tries to stay between cubs and threat.

I noticed, parenthetically, that her dog was very, very quiet. Quite possibly the dog was the real target. When we're walking, my small dog sometimes attracts scary attention from big dogs. We have on occasion been stalked, lunged at, and attacked (once). That's what the bear's behavior looked like to me ne.

The most effective way in my experience to disrupt the threatening dog's intention is to pick my dog up. She immediately becomes almost invisible as a target. And, of course, you never, ever, turn your back on a threatening dog. Or bear, apparently!

IDK how big her dog is, but I think it's a good thing it was quiet bc if it was yapping its head off, it would simply have attracted more attention.

From what I've seen momma bears do send their cubs away from the danger. So probably not that. This story was on the news and the bear for a grizzly seemed on the small side. My thought now is how old was it.

The dog was most like the target and you couldn't really see the dog in the video. But I don't think it was small enough that she could have easily picked it up.

No, wildlife officers say Never turn your back on a bear. They will start chasing you.

We don't do the green bins here. I know they do them on the south side of Chicago and in Evergreen Park, but I don't think they do them in Oak Lawn, which is just a little further away from Chicago. It wouldn't surprise me if Orland Park did it too, even though they're pretty far away, but I think you'd have to go to the more Northern suburbs of Chicago to get a lot of green bins. I never had them growing up, and I know my grandma didn't get them until sometime after I wasn't living there anymore. In most of Illinois, you pay for that privilege. I remember the good old days of having to go to the grocery store to buy leaf bags, and then having to put stickers on each bag that were $0.75 each from the same grocery store, and all of that money was just a tax the city collected from us. Illegal to burn them too... how about that?

They're only doing greenwaste bins bc they're running out of landfill space, I kid you not! They truck it to these big commercial composting operations, and just to incentivize people to use them, we get them for free, no monthly fee.

Out here we just throw branches in with the trash if they're small enough, or cut them to 4 feet and leave them on the curb. This storm was thankfully a rare exception to the 4 foot rule. I thought I'd have to wait a week to test that theory out, but boy am I glad I pulled all that out on the morning that I did because 3 hours later it was all gone. Watched them come with some cool truck that had this pinching shovel thing on the end and he was just scooping them up with all the power you wish those scam crane game cranes had.

Oh gosh no, no lawn clippings. Sorry to say I'm catching up on months and years of yardwork. My front yard has been in the process of being re-landscaped to a low water version since before I got sick, and without a lawn weeds just take off and grow pretty tall. Bc around here, if you water it, it grows 24/7/364.
I'm sure my neighbors hate me.

But, to be fair to me, half of that was pine needles. The Canary Island pines that I planted cast the shade I was hoping for, I just didn't realize they came with so many needles!
