I don't know. I'm certain that truck was capable of helping out with that work if they wanted to. It depends on what their focus was. There were so many trees down everywhere that I'm sure the two of those truck drivers could have had their hands full all week and still not come anywhere close to having it all done. There might have been several pairs of those guys all around my city and even in the other cities that got hit all at once without even factoring in people doing the houses. I would think that the fallen houses would probably be left for later, after the insurance companies came out to assess the damage first.
Yeah. I can't say I'm displeased at all.
There were 3 times as many houses without power in Illinois just a month or so ago when my Dad lost power for 3 days, but I think we were probably just hit way harder in a much smaller radius. I really think that a lot of the wait time was cutting down trees. I did notice that several hours before the power went on by us, they did have trucks coming by and people checking out everybody's houses. I think that was probably one last sweep that they were doing to check the power lines in case somebody was really sleeping our out-of-town and didn't report any line/tree issues by them. That's when I got them to re-anchor that power cable to the side of my house for free.
Yeah... It was so quick, but it was devastating. I can't imagine the whole episode was more than 5 minutes long from my perspective. It rained for a few hours afterward, but it was all calm after that brutal front left as quickly as it came.
Thank god that whole tree didn't fall on me this time and I really hope I put the fear in my neighbors to finally get it taken down before the next big storm. I hated saying what had to be said, but I've hated resenting them for that damn thing for all this time too. He seems cool, but he says his wife is pissed. That sucks, but they'd be a lot more pissed next year when that tree falls on me and they're being sued.
But if you look at the damage on both the street west of me and that east of me, it was as if Moses parted the sea on my block and it went around us on both sides. We had two roofs crashed in houses behind us and all those downed power lines and about 30 trees was just one block in front of us. I just found out the guy directly two blocks behind me who came and mowed my front lawn with his rider mower when I let it get too long last year had a tree fall on his house. Miraculously, it looks like there wasn't much more than some shingle and gutter damage.
I don't scare easy, but I was upstairs when that hail started coming down and you could hear all the booms going on outside. This one really had me worried there for a minute, especially when part of that tree slapped hard against my window with a force that still leaves me in awe that I didn't have a single broken window. It just sucks that all 3 of my windows on that side of the house have tears in the screens, when 5 days ago only the basement window did.

I think I'm taking that day off, Sigs.
Every time I try to get up to do something, my inner thighs remind me why I'm not going to feel bad about chilling for a day or two while it's over 100 outside.
I might hang that shelf later if I feel like it. I think I was initially planning on doing that 6 or so days ago by now.
I've got a lot to clean up, re-org and throw away too at this point. Even more once I get my contact paper down everywhere I want it to protect the painted surfaces. Not that I can throw anything else away until trash day.
I already bought 4 more of these really nice plastic trays with rubber feet and lightly ribbed rubber padding on the inside bottom, and another cat litter tray for under the plumbing like I did with 2 of them in the kitchen sink cabinet to hold all the cleaning supplies that weren't in the bathroom.
Got some cleanup to get to in the basement too. Nothing serious, but I've got to get everything off one set of horses down there so I can pull out all the plastic that I had protecting the tile from paint drops because there's water between the plastic and the tiles now on about half of it, and I don't want any of that getting gross when it doesn't need to. If I'm going to do anything today, that's probably what should be getting done.
Nothing was on the floor that shouldn't have been, so only saw horse legs and the legs of all the shelving units I built even had any contact with the small amount in the living area. The only casualty was a deck of playing cards a friend got from Vegas with a hole punched through the entire deck. I don't even know how it got down there and it must have fallen behind and onto to the floor while I was digging for something I needed on that shelf. Oh well... I still have 2 or 3 more somewhere.

Did nothing today of consequence, except for catch up a bit more on sleep.
Looks like the water in the basement isn't causing any problems yet under that plastic. I'll probably just do all that tomorrow. I need to be up and about anyhow since I should have the cable guy coming to fix that downed line that somehow still miraculously works.

They were told it would raise our taxes $20 or $30 per year. It raised theirs about $200 and and mine close to $300 per year.
But overall they've been decent neighbors. The third thing that always bothered me is how lousy they took care of their lawn, but they've been paying a crew to do it this year and it usually looks better than mine now.
We hang out sometimes. I'm sure we'd hang out more if I tried being more friendly than I am, but when we do get together it's not a bad time.
I'd just had it when I saw all of that tree still against my house 2 days later without an attempt from them to move it or even a "sorry".
Maybe they still believe that it's on both of our properties, I don't know. It's not. I let them know it's not 4 or 5 years ago now. I would think that if they haven't looked into it themselves that it would behoove them to do so now.
And really, I can't be too mad about it... most people aren't empaths, nor do they even go about their day exercising a shred of empathy for other people since they're so wrapped up in their own little world. It's not their gutter that gets clogged up twice a year to the point of uselessness... and even if it were, they haven't had 2% of the water issues inside their house as I've had since I've been here. I might see their gutters cleaned out about once every 5 years because it isn't a big deal to them.
The seeds don't fall on their house or lawn, the tiny little leaves that the leaf blowers don't work on do not fall onto their yard or their gutters, and every time a limb falls off of it, it's either on my house or in my yard. They pulled two piddly ass branches to the curb compared to the 15% to 20% of the whole tree I had to get out of mine.
The tree isn't looking like it's bending 20% toward their house when the storms come in. It's always doing that to me.
I just had to let them know what's going to happen if that thing falls on me. It's so tall and so thick that there's zero chance it wouldn't absolutely flatten my entire house if it did.
I'm just hoping they do what's right now that they know the stakes. I don't want to make an enemy out of them.

It's an Elm tree, which is all I know for certain. Trunk goes straight to the sky like a lighthouse, and the limbs don't start until it's quite a bit up there. From what I can see online, there is little help unless I knew exactly what species. It could very likely be American Elm, which is supposed to be very strong wood and ideal for suburban planning. But there are other species that do have weak wood too.

I've never seen anything on their tree that made me imminently worried about anything like both of the trees I got cut down had been showing me. No dead branches. No obscene carpenter ant activity on or around them. No squirrels popping in and out of holes that shouldn't be there. No obviously dying limbs anywhere without leaves on them.
Like, to give you the idea of the type of tree, I'm sure whoever cuts this one is going to be mighty happy with the money they're going to get on the side because unlike either of my two gnarled and dying trees, I'm sure they could turn this one into a telephone pole if they wanted to. Somebody is getting options for some really long lumber here, and it wouldn't surprise me with the price of wood these days if the tree place makes 50% or more just selling that to somebody else on the side.
I learned quite a bit about the side deals they had going on that helped keep the price of the jobs reasonable just from bullshitting with the owner when he came by with tamales for his crew and offered me a few. He said they'd get something for mine, but it probably wasn't going to be all that much after the costs for hauling it out and disposing of all the useless stuff. But he said they had all that figured in their percentages and they don't win them all. What little there was to use of mine would probably be turned into pallets or something.
And I didn't disbelieve that, since I still have pictures of how hollowed out a good deal of both of them were. And even though I got same-day service because both of his crews found that it was too early in a very wet spring to do other houses that had more difficult situations to work around, I know that saved him money for a totally busted day, but I'm sure he wasn't planning on having to pay his entire team just do do the one job in about 6 hours after losing 2 or 3 earlier in the day.
I really don't think they ended up making a lot of money on my job. He may have actually lost some, but he didn't strike me as the type of guy who was going to bitch about that to a customer and he had a firm grip on his business and my job probably salvaged the day.
But it really sounds to me like I lucked out and benefited from their system.
I remember my mom and stepdad having a tree cut down maybe 5 years earlier and it cost them over $4 grand. I know part of that is because they were in Illinois and that's just inevitable, but I'm POSITIVE they went with the crew that promised the least amount of damage possible and 100% cleanup of everything. (I had a quote that was almost twice as much, but I'm sure I would have been a lot happier with the way the lawn looked after they left). But the biggest cost I'm sure was the location. No worries. With these storms blowing you've got a lot on your mind. Yeah, bad heat isn't good either. Lots of water, sun blocker if you have to be out for anything real length of time.
Maybe I took what you wrote the wrong way too.
Frustration with neighbours can happen.
Sometimes people don't think when they vote.
And trees always seem to be a problem between neighbours. It's mostly because of the roots I would guess and how strong they are in the ground. If the dirt becomes loose then the tree will lean one way or the other. They will have to cut down what is left and dig up the roots. Depending how much of the root system went on to your property you may have to do some digging as well.
Yup, just not thinking. That happens a lot.

Wow, they have a HUGE crown. Casts a lot of shade, but also offers a lot of wind resistance. They take being pruned, but only in winter. Seems like a good pruning to thin out the canopy and narrow it out would solve the potential hazard, but it doesn't solve your leaf and seed- litter problem. And given how ginormous that crown is, that's a big problem!
Yanno, if your neighbors really want to keep that tree they should pay to have your gutters cleaned and your lawn raked once or twice a year.

That's what the leaves and seeds look like. But that crown looks much more like my remaining Silver Maple than it does their Elm. I would imagine their trunk goes quite a bit higher before you even get the first large limbs showing up, and it didn't really split like that into thick branches out the top with a wide crown.
If the elm in the picture were a paddle ball racquet, my neighbor's elm would be a Tootsie Pop.

My neighbors hardly do anything regarding regular maintenance outside beyond mowing. There's no way they're paying somebody to prune that thing, let alone paying to have my lawn taken care of.
They've got money. They're not engineers or anything, but they've both got good jobs and they've paid other people to remodel everything in their house, including tearing down an entire wall between their living room and kitchen and installing the island and dining area where the wall used to be.
I paid my $2,750 to get rid of my tree problem. I think they can swing it.
Up until the other day that tree has never been a problem for them. Because it's only a problem for me and I just take care of it.
Now they know what the stakes are. Not that I desire it, but they're probably losing sleep over that as we speak. My hope is that they just finally cut that thing down and look at it like taking out their own insurance policy.

If I don't talk myself out of it, I do believe I'll be hanging that shelf today. Got my anchors and screws ready. Already cut out the contact paper for the surface once it's installed. Put contact paper on the 2 solid shelves on the over-toilet cab and will put the last piece on that for the floating shelf once I go out into my 200 degree garage and get the pegs for the height of the shelf off my work bench.
While I've got that contact paper out, I really should do the insides of the vanity and all the drawers in there too.
When I was going through my big tote of various things I pre-bought for the house when they were on sale, I found an entirely new roll of that white contact paper I'd used for the kitchen cabs and drawers and my curio cabinet and some other things. I didn't remember still having a full one, and knowing me I would usually have returned it. I appreciate the fact that Jack from 3 or 4 years ago knew I'd have further need for it eventually and kept it on hand. There wasn't much left of my old scrap that was useful from the looks of it, and this roll will be plenty for anything I do in here. I'll probably have enough leftover for whatever I eventually do in the bathroom downstairs since there won't be a vanity and it's just a pedestal sink.
That'll be nice. If I get all this done tonight, I can clean up a LOT of stuff and start reorganizing things I no longer need upstairs. Maybe until the heat dies down I'll just focus on doing a little dehoarding after that. Not that I'm going to have any real space for new trash until after pickup day next week, but no reason not to start making piles of stuff to get rid of. Most of that would be going to goodwill anyhow.

I think it was way back in late April we had summer for three weeks. Now, we're having spring. AM temperatures are very comfortable so I've been getting out before noon to do yardwork in the front yard, which is usually sunny that time of day, and yesterday eas DO cloudy and cool I managed to clock in over 2 hours, and fill up one of those ginormous greenwaste bins with weeds and grasses. Too bad I forgot to take "before" puctures!
Today shifting the yardwork to the afternoon just bc I got tired of yardwork first thing in the AM. My mission today: pruning. Gonna try out my new pole saw! And this time I won't forget to take pix.
Tomorrow, all being well, gonna round up dear daughter for some afternoon backyard work. She'll be weed whacking while I start prepping the yard for a professional cleanup and tree trimming/ removal.

Yeah... I don't know what it is around here right now. This is the 3rd time in 15 summers here that we've had these abnormally high temps stick around for any more than a day or two. I think this one just feels really bad because of how much rain we've gotten so late and are still getting this late into the summer and you can cut the humidity with a knife. My 10 day doesn't look much better than right now, and there's a lot of rain and the possibility of a few thunderstorms again in the mix too.
Glad to hear it at least cooled down by you. How much could possibly be left for the professionals after what you've gotten out of there?

Well it is done, so I do have them.
Not just yet though. I forgot the last thing I did was put spackle on that trimed out side of the cabinet and never sanded it down or touched it up. I'll do that too and get pics of that since that should be quick and easy and it can dry while I'm doing other things like getting the trash out and staging all the stuff that needs to be ready for next week. So I should have a few pics of that too.
Probably won't have much pics of anything regardless of what I'm doing for a while. Not much that's really picture worthy, until I get to the bathroom floor or painting up those two remaining bi-folds so I can finally have all the closet doors up in the house. The bannister, eventually...
Got that 2nd sump well and electric and that generator switch I want to be working on before fall's done, so that's nothing to really make any pictures about. I'll still be taking them, but just kind of boring behind the scenes stuff that most people get to take completely for granted is all.
Maybe one day I'll make a video of that generator plug in action. That would be cool, especially if I can still have internet and TV along with the well and the fridge going during the next long power outage. If it works like I plan it to, I'll be blowing my dad's mind when I show him what it is and what it's capable of. He'll probably be asking me to come over and do it for him.

All the contact paper is up on the shelving and cabinets except for the vanity. I think if I do that tonight it will be after I use the daylight remaining to do some more cleanup and reorg. All the trash is out with other stuff staged to immediately fill the bins back up after they're dumped.
Touchups done. Waiting on that to dry before I take any pictures. I noticed I've got some little paint spatter on the basin, and I'll have to clean that up with a razor since I'm keeping it. Probably do that before I take the pictures too, although I doubt it would matter with the lower quality stuff I've been snapping recently.
I was thinking about going out to get some more food, but I'll probably just wait on that until maybe tomorrow now. I was out there getting dirty for only about 20 minutes and I was head to toe sweating and my shirt was soaked. It's really gross out there right now. 82 on the 2nd floor of my house where the A/C is, so that ought to tell you all you need to know.

If you don't count the contact paper in the vanity and a little bit of clear silicone around the basin, and a new faucet and drain, bathroom is now done except for the floor and toilet.

When I was looking for shells, it looks like at some point I got rid of all the ugly, malformed and broken ones I had, and was only left with about 6 of them. Those were all shells my mom got from the ocean on the west coast while she was on some sort of 2 week job training two lifetimes ago. I knew I also had some that one of my uncles had collected when he was at my grandma's house. Inside of that batch though, there was quite a few different really nice polished rocks of all various colors too.
So while I was at the dollar store just now, I was looking around for anything that might look good with that stuff and I got two small glasses that have a rainbow effect to them... they look like they might be designed to be candle holders. They were perfect for this, and now it's just one less thing that's been sitting in a box for years.
Got all that plastic up off the ground once I was able to move some things around in the basement, so that should all be drying out right now.
Getting late. Might not do any of the contact paper tonight. If I do anything else it might be cleaning up more of the crap in the small bedroom. I already see more floor in there now than I have for about 2 months.

I know I have some real good pictures of how bad the bathroom was (in HD!) somewhere. I know I also have full shots of the toilet and medicine cabinets as well as everything I salvaged and used in the remodel even before I'd sanded any of it down somewhere too.
If I ever do find them, I'll have to show comparison pics. Of the stuff I just took or did manage to find and put in the history here, this is what all of that all looked like this in the middle of May...

One more from before the outage to see the difference from that last pic in the post above...
And here's what we look like from down low up to the bottom of the medicine cabinet. You can see the second switch off to the right side of the bottom of the cabinet for the vanity light, and the dark trim fleshing it out to the wall on the side (although not too much at this angle and you can see it better in pics above from earlier today).
Plenty of room above the basin for a tall boy oil rubbed bronze faucet if I want one, and I could still install some things on the wall like toothbrush holders and such if I want to.
GFCI up on the wall to the right there, protecting everything in that room. Did the shimming I needed with some nuts to get those plates to sit solidly exactly where they needed to.

I've hung a total of 5 paintings in rooms that I've finished and I regret 3 of them. I put that plastic privacy film on all the windows because I don't even want to damage the walls to put drapes or the windows to put shades in.
I'm sure somebody will do all of that one day, and they'll have a really nice canvas to work from.
I don't do too much decorating beyond the work itself. I think people will be amazed when they see the glasses and the rocks and shells up there.

Yeah... 4 colors to choose from on that trim after Brenda added poly/wood grain into the mix, but I do believe that was the right choice.
Unfortunately, I will have to do just an additional bit of repair and touchups over there. I keep forgetting that they did old school lathboard and plaster on these walls, which means that every single inner and outer corner of the original walls of this house has a BEEFY 1.25" steel corner piece that puts the modern aluminum corner beads to shame. And I shot a brad nail right into it.
Nothing I won't be able to hide that I did completely, but it's clear what I've done so far hasn't done the trick yet.

I had another 8 foot limb on my roof from that fucking tree today. Now it's right in the middle of their lawn. We haven't had any storms or even really any wind, so that must have been a broken branch from up in the tree that finally fell down. I don't know when that happened, as I never heard nothing.
Already filled up a trash bin with stuff mostly from the garage after they picked it all up, so I'm already at 2 of 3 cans full with a week to go. I'll have just enough to put in another bag of regular house trash between now and then, so I should be good. Any more dehoarding will have to go in that 3rd bin for later.
A lot of the stuff I got rid of today was light fixtures and faucets I know I would never put in my house. Saved a really nice kitchen faucet though, and I know I would have installed that in the kitchen instead of buying one if I remembered I had that. That's the one going in there if the one I bought craps out on me. That came from rich people, and it's probably a $400 kitchen faucet. Also threw out some stuff from the old car I've been holding onto for god knows why, along with all the trash from the bathroom remodel like the old metal in-wall medicine cab.
More room for my car than I've had in years after just about 3 hours worth of work out there today. I've really got to get somebody over here to help me bring in that really nice leather recliner my neighbor gave me last year before it's not so nice anymore. I was thinking about attempting that on my own, but I just had to call in a replacement diabetes sensor just the other day for falling off while I was doing work, and this one is only 2 days old and waterlogged with sweat. I'm afraid I'll knock that thing off for sure if I try wrestling with that oversized one-seater on my own. Plus, every door on the way to bring it in is finished now, and I don't want to risk screwing up the paint job because I'm being impatient.
Replaced some of the old shitty fabric decorative box things I got from the dollar store on my curio cabinet with the much nicer plastic with rubber liner trays I'd gotten for the bathroom. The big ones were too big for anywhere in there, even the drawers, so I'll just make use of them somewhere else. I really don't have much going back into the bathroom now, so that shouldn't be a problem.
I'm about done for the day. That heat and humidity knocks it out of you pretty quickly.

It was bothering me how awful the porch was looking as the main passthrough for all the crap between the storm and my bathroom work, so even though it's like a Dutch Oven in there right now, I wiped down the sills and floor and vaccummed up the oriental rug after dusting the TV and the fireplace heater. I think if I spent maybe an hour out there really cleaning it would look as good as when I painted it. Looks better than it did before the storm now though.
I'm looking at all those bags of clothes I've got to go through along with 2 loads spread out on my backup futon with no room to really put any of it and I'm itching to start tackling that job. But it's just hot and I don't want to deal with that right now. It's so much nicer in here after you've been outside for a while, but I don't like the idea of going through 6 bags worth of clothes until it cools off outside a bit.
I found the two large wall vents for the 2nd heat duct system that's been attached to nothing since I bought the place. I'm going to clean those up and get spray paint on them soon. One of them probably isn't going to see any use in a long time, but no reason not to put the other one up to cover up the nasty vent hole in the wall in the one room that's about 90% finished down there.
I believe I found all the circular ceiling vents too, so I'll clean those and spray them as well so I can finally get all of them put back up. And I found the 3 brand new oil-rubbed bronze ceiling fixtures that I bought on a great sale a long while back, so I can get those up in my bedrooms upstairs too.
And I've got the two bi-fold doors down in the basement. Not staged completely for paint yet, but just about.
So many little things to do too.
Not that I'm going out of my way to procrastinate getting the electric and plumbing I need to do done, but if I'm not going to jump right into that I might as well at least be doing something to keep the forward momentum going.

I don't ever remember anybody calling the movie ID4 back when it came out, but then again, the internet wasn't a part of my life and all I got was the perspective from my small sphere of influence and whatever the media said. I know that the ID4 logo was a thing that was on branding for toys and stuff. I think one of the bad-guy aliens was the last toy I ever bought or my parents ever bought me (if you don't count video games). I REALLY liked that movie when it came out. The special effects blew my mind. It's one of the only movies that I ever saw in the full priced theaters more than once, first with a friend and I somehow talked my dad into taking my brothers and I to see it the following week without waiting for it to go to the dollar show.
I worked at a Toys R Us around that time and they always threw the promotional stuff out, but I got them to give me the huge canvas Independence Day banner they had above the action figures in the toy aisle when they finally took all that down. It was huge... something like 20 to 25 feet wide, and a full shot of the spaceship over the city as it was blasting a building.
I got rid of that in the dehoard. One of the things I wonder if it would have actually been worth any money since they were probably pretty rare 6 years ago, but Independence Day??? I'm not going to beat myself up over that one. It probably should have been put in a landfill 30 years ago.
Do you remember if they called it ID4 in Canada? I know that you have your own Independence day, and I would assume that many nations do. But save the possibility of a rare coincidence or copycat nation, they're not very likely to be on July 4th as well. So I could see it making sense to be marketed everywhere else as ID4.
I always just assumed that was the Internet doing what the Internet does and giving shorthand to pop culture history. But maybe it was that the entire rest of the world was being sold the movie "ID4", and here in America it was called "Independence Day", and once the world got a lot smaller a decade later the majority ruled on the name of the movie.

Every few days I slow down a bit. That was Wednesday. Yesterday I got caught up in kitchen work and running errands ... Among other things our pharmacy called up and nagged me to pick up our meds. I was just waiting until they were ALL ready so I wouldn't have to go twice! And dear daughter makes a Huge Deal about getting "safe and sane" fireworks for the 4th so that's what we did.
The temp here has gone up a bit so indoor work for me.
But the most astonishing thing happened a few days ago. As I was finishing up that day's weeding, an younger teen who was popping wheelies on his electric motorcycle (looks almost like a light motorcycle for dirt racing) stopped and asked me if I needed any help! Well, I told him I was just finishing up but offered him a job for $15/ hr abd told him to have his mom or dad call me direct in two weeks so they know what's going on. In two weeks I'll have a plan mapped out and I can schedule his work. If he does well I'll bump his pay up.

I got rid of that in the dehoard. One of the things I wonder if it would have actually been worth any money since they were probably pretty rare 6 years ago, but Independence Day??? I'm not going to beat myself up over that one. It probably should have been put in a landfill 30 years ago.
Do you remember if they called it ID4 in Canada? I know that you have your own Independence day, and I would assume that many nations do. But save the possibility of a rare coincidence or copycat nation, they're not very likely to be on July 4th as well. So I could see it making sense to be marketed everywhere else as ID4.
I always just assumed that was the Internet doing what the Internet does and giving shorthand to pop culture history. But maybe it was that the entire rest of the world was being sold the movie "ID4", and here in America it was called "Independence Day", and once the world got a lot smaller a decade later the majority ruled on the name of the movie.

Despite intentions I spent the day in the kitchen again. First up: a pile of dishes, pots and pans. Then finishing cooking 2 chicken carcasses to make broth, and picking the chicken off the bones for the dog, along with the heart, lungs, gizzard, and liver for the dog. Trimming and wilting spinach. Dividing up and storing the dog treat, bbroth, and spinach. Cooking pork country strips for bbq.

I feel for you! When I lived in WNY the one season I absolutely hated was summer. Hot, sticky, and no AC. Usually thunderstorms meant a cooler front coming thru, but sometimes it would rain and then the sun would come out and the sidewalks would just steam.
Plus, our bedrooms were on the 2nd floor, right under the roof with no attic crawlspace and no windows on the west side of the house, where the breeze usually came from. No wonder I had a hard time getting to sleep in the summer!
It's only gotten worse since then, and with you not being next to a big moderating body of water like a lake, it's probably a lot worse where you are.
Sounds like you need some relief!

I appreciate your concern. I'm just being a big baby is all. It's really not that bad. I know I'm about a decade older and got the diabeeters now, but I've been through way worse summers all my life, and most of them without any A/C at all.
It finally did break... probably right around midnight when they lifted the heat advisory that had been up for 4 or 5 straight days and nights. When I woke up this morning, not only was the thermostat down under 80 for the first time in as many days, but it was actually at only 75.
It's still humid as shit and the 1.5" we're getting overnight tonight isn't going to help with that, but at least for now the temps seem to be about anywhere from 10 to even 15 degrees cooler on the highs for the next few weeks. Not fun seeing everything in the 80's either, but after what we just went through we'll probably hardly notice that... as long as the power stays on.
I'd like to get one summer out of the basement in this house between finishing it and selling it, just to say I finally did. I haven't spent much time down there at all outside of sanding/painting things, laundry, rolling smokes and fixing catastrophies ever since I found out I was on a flood plane about 5 years after I bought the place.
I just don't like being down there. Some of the closest to PTSD memories I've got happened down there.
But about 5 days is the limit with my current A/C setup. I think if that heat wave kept up for another 5 that I would have found my way down there regardless.

I haven't thought of using an air fryer. Might be a good thing to have, tho. I'll go check out some recipes when I have more time and see if it will allow me to make things I am either already using my convection oven for, or can't make at all.

SIX, how much starch are you allowed? When I make fake "fried" food like "fried" chicken or "breaded" zucchini stix, I use two parts parmesan to one part panko (extra puffy-crunchy Japanese bread crumbles) to reduce the starch but still get the crunch.

I've been looking at then for a while since I found out you can actually bake in them. Things like cupcakes and such. Very versatile.
This one is smaller and fits perfectly in the spot I picked out for it. I could carry it home in its box. So for me that's not too bad.

Well, I took the dog in for a senior dog wellness check, to update her vaccinations, and have her incisions looked at.
I was kind of dreading the news because one of the emergency vets detected a heart murmur stage 3-4 (max is 6) but THIS vet didn't detect anything, and the other emergency vet didn't either. So IDK how a heart murmur can come and go, but it's good news that it's gone. Yay!
Hubby's biopsy came back benign. All is good for now, so I can kind of unkink myself and put the focus back on decluttering. Looking forward to spending another productive morning boxing stuff up for donation. Another yay!

Oh, cool. Mine probably isn't too much bigger than yours is then. I've seen smaller than mine before, but not too many. My buddy and his wife gave me their old one when they got a Ninja branded one that was twice the size. Those lucky bastards somehow got picked by Amazon to be in their "freebie club" where they get tons of free stuff from Amazon every year, and all she has to do is write product reviews and take pictures and videos of the products in use.
Everything they get though is counted as income, and at full price of the product and not any of the sale prices either. I'm guessing some form of 1099. I'll bet they pay on way more income every year just from free Amazon stuff than I have in any year since 2009 when I last had a good job.
The new Ninja was free, and the smaller one they gave me was free before that.
I know it does a hell of a job reheating GOOD pizza. A few years ago my Aunt came over for Easter. We knew everything was going to be closed, so she got a pizza from our favorite place by my Grandma's the night before and we just heated it up in the air fryer and you could hardly tell it hadn't come straight out of the oven. No microwave is going to do that. It's possible to do with an oven, but it's a lot more difficult to get it just right with preheating the big thing compared to that little one.
I'm not surprised you can bake in it. Aside from the limitations of the size of your thing, I bet you could do anything with that which could be done with an oven.

While not untrue, and I am getting a little slower these days than I used to be, I can't keep letting every little setback throw me off track like this. It's funny that you mention it, because I did get something done that needed doing for nearly 2 months now today. I'm not going to name the company here, because this seems so fantastically random that it's got to be some sort of super-infrequent glitch, or you'd be hearing people complain about this sort of thing all the time...
But I had this credit card, you see... One of many. And out of all the cards I've ever had in my life, this is now the second card that required either a smart phone with the app to log into your account, or some rather draconian 2-factor login procedures that were forced on you with no way to opt out.
After they did this, I still kept the card for probably a few years. I only used it once a year to keep it active so I wouldn't get any changes in my credit score for closing it out. But that was before they made the change to the auto-call system. My phone is VOIP. Back in the day, you use to be able to use VOIP phones to navigate the phone networks, but somewhere along the way that eventually changed everywhere. Not all at once, but over time. Now if you aren't calling a live person, a VOIP phone is completely useless to you in 2026. It's a great thing that in tandem with all of this they have also added voice recognition to a lot of their systems so you don't actually need to press the keys, but not everyone has done that yet.
So here is me, a little over a year ago now, calling them up to finally cancel the card once and for all. Because they made a fatal change to that auto-call system. You used to have them call you and they'd just state who they were, why they were calling and give you your 6-digit number. But now? They call you, tell you who they are and why they are calling, but now they require you to PRESS 1 to receive your 6-digit code that you absolutely require to be able to log into your account.
Shit. Oh well. Nothing I can do about it. Hopefully my 833 credit score doesn't get hit too hard by this. At least it's over and I don't have to think about it anymore...
Fast Forward almost one year, and my yearly Sams Club auto-renewal comes in, and Jack didn't think to ever change the payment method there after cancelling the card.
No big deal, right? You cancelled that card almost a year ago. Just deny the transaction, and Sam's can let me know it failed and I'll use a new card. Bada bing, bada boom.
....
Nope. I got a fraud alert asking if it was me, and I half didn't take it seriously for a while and figured it had to be spam since I didn't have that card anymore. And it should be mentioned that in no point in time did I ever reply to anyone there and tell them that it was or was not a fraudulent translation, because honestly, I didn't believe that it fell under either of the stated categories, even though I had no clue what the hell was going on.
But then I looked at my Sam's account and yes... They did indeed appear to have re-opened my closed account and made that payment. On an account that I couldn't log into anymore and cancelled a year ago. And now on an account where I

I think I'm gonna have to re-read your post, SIX. Seems like you've ID'd a problematic cycle in your life, but is there a resolution in there somewhere?
I'm a bit like you. I tend to work best under pressure. Not entirely self- motivating, so I put MYSELF in pressured situations, like taking promotions I was sure I'd suck at.
BRENDA is actually on the other end of the spectrum. There are benefits to having a routine, and because of her example I've tried to put myself on some kind of schedule. I only sometimes follow it bc things pop up. A lot. But at least I don't molder in my downtimes. I accomplish something every day, even if it's routine or small.
Speaking of which ... I dragged a chair into the den and set up a stool as a sort of table and sat hubby down to go over all those computer and electronic parts that I know nothing about. He isolated two big boxes of e waste. It doesn't look much better, but at least that much will be gone! And then I'll go back to pecking away at the rest of the clutter .

Yeah... I've been in quite the writing mood the last 24 hours, it would appear. I've never counted my words before. I wonder if I hit 5 figures yesterday.
I don't know if there is a resolution in there other than do like you said and force yourself into unpleasant situations. That's always what running out of money does to me. Fortunately for me, it won't be the case this time because my lack of health insurance if I'm not working is going to pop up first.
If I didn't keep getting laid off all the time, that would have been the solution right there. I tend to be a creature of habit, and I know you've heard me say before that if they didn't end night shift and ruin everything, I would have been happy doing that job overnight until retirement for the $11.72 they were giving me.
It's too late to do it now and pay it off fully, but I had thought several years ago that what I could have done to force me to do something much earlier would be to buy a really nice pickup truck, or buy the two brand new furnaces and air conditioners that this house would need for all the vents to operate and everything to be modernized. I could have probably done all of that fairly easily a few years ago. Don't imagine that's an option anymore right now.
It's easy now for me to look back and say I should have done it differently, but I'm not going to do that. Nothing about any of this surprises me. It's just what I do.
I think what I really need to do, is to get those major plumbing and electric things all squared away for good and then look for a job. If those two things get finished, my concerns over flooding, the city sewer going down or another drawn out power outages are slashed to small fractions of what they are right now.
A lot of the stuff I still need to do on the house is relatively cheap to do and/or I already have a lot of the materials necessary and all I need to do is devote the time. If I can get myself into a place I don't absolutely hate working at for 2 or 3 days per week, I should have plenty of time to keep working on all those cheapish things while topping off the tanks again on the side. If I wait until everything else is finished on the house entirely, I can pay somebody to do 2 new furnaces and 2 A/C units and the ductwork necessary all at the end when I've got no more DIY expenses here and I'm looking to sell.
Good to hear you got some stuff out.
I really need to get back to doing something over here.
I did spot a very large PC battery backup thing I took from my grandma's house for some stupid reason. I don't know why I still have it. I can't imagine that battery is really good at all anymore since that had to have been a purchase my uncle who died over a decade ago made. Part of me had always thought that it still has to be a good surge protector because of what it was designed to do, but then another part wonders if plugging computers into something that has a known failed battery might actually potentially damage the sensitive electronics, so I never use it.
And even if it does work, it weighs 20lbs. Just buy another surge protector if you ever need one. And by the way, you don't currently need one.

I just saw it again and I took it down to the kitchen door so I'll trip over it the next time I go out.
It made me think about how I acquire most of the crap that I do over the years...
I look at that thing right now and think about how it's made the journey to where it is today, staged for final removal. From my grandma's basement, where it had to have been bought by my uncle who died 10 or even 15 years ago. In my car with a bunch of other shit that mostly has probably been already thrown out in one of my cans, or will be shortly. Then it sat behind my large recliner in the living room for a few years. Right next to an outlet hidden back there, but never plugged into the wall despite having my AIO and a laptop both plugged straight into the outlet there.
And I never used it because of my worries that it could screw up my computers if the battery is flaked out in a bad way after being this old.
But what did I do when I was cleaning things and moving them around? Instead of pitching that thing 2 months ago, it went further into my house by going upstairs, and it has been part of that room that you could barely see the floor in while I had the bathroom torn apart and my old man had come to stay a few nights a few weeks earlier so it already had a ton of clothes on the futon along with about 5 bags of clothes I still need to go through and a bunch of other crap that needs sorting.
Why????
Why did I take it?
Why did it sit unused for over 2 years behind my recliner?
Why on earth did I take it back upstairs with the tech that still needs to be sorted out?
Gone, baby. Gone.
I've got half a mind to take all 5 of those bags of clothes directly to Goodwill without even looking inside any of them at this point.

Well, we have a junk room.
Bc the garage is hubby's woodworking shop, I put up a couple of Penco shelving units in what was technically an office. There's also a 4-drawer legal filing cabinet and a "desk" that I assembled by putting an old door across two 2 drawer filing cabinets. Plus a sort of small desk like storage unit. And dear daughter has her bulk money -making recycling there.
It's like the Great Pacific Trash gyre in there!

What a pain. I guess for a lot of people it's just inevitable and something you just have to work around.
I just don't want to do it anymore. I haven't really picked up any speed yet, but I do think that a pretty major dehoard is going to be happening along with the work I want to get done this summer through fall.
I want to have everything out of the attic altogether. Just because there are a few rooms up there, doesn't mean they need to be filled with anything. If I have a few spare computer monitors left, they can go up there for easy retrieval if one of my current ones break, but that's it. There is some stuff out there I'm never going to part with, but I can put that in the small bedroom closet after I've put up the bi-fold doors. And get some proper bins for everything that I'm going to keep so I can get rid of all the musty smelling cardboard while I'm at it.
A lot of stuff needs to be purged in the garage. I still have stuff out there I know I'm never going to need for this house and I'm done saving stuff for forever in the future when I don't know how long forever is going to be anymore.
When I moved out from my Grandma's, all I took with me was an inflatable mattress, my Sony Trinitron and my DVD player.
I think I liked it better that way.

I don't think we have as much stuff as you do. OTOH you've made excellent use of your hoard. We're at the age, tho, where so many things that were going to come in handy some day aren't going to be used. We have to be realistic. If it's not going to be used in 5 years, it's not going to be used.

Toaster oven donated and yeah my hands not good now. Also other outside chores done.
Ran into my friend again in the mall. I was going into the dollar store and I saw a lady from the back. Thought that head looks familiar then I heard her talking and so I went over and said Hi. We sat and talked for a bit. Talking about lunch again. Have to send her a message because I think my whole week is clear but it's here end. With her husband and pooch and adult children, grandchildren. So we shall see.
Now, all I have left to do tomorrow is finished organizing my laundry.

Do not know what is going on around my area but I have heard and seen emergency vehicles 3 times now. When I went out there was an ambulance then crossing a street two fire engines and paramedics went screaming by. Felt sorry for them as stupid drivers wouldn't get out of their way. Sirens screaming and the engines had to honk their horns at them. Though I did see one driver move over but the others. Engines and paramedics had to go around them.
Sitting here at my computer I've just heard some again. Sounds like ambulances this time.

My grandma had the whole damn light up glass chrismas village with the train and everything, and I know all of that got split up (in retrospect, if I had remembered I would have requested just one piece from that collection). So even though these were the refuse I guess, they still look super pricey and I just don't want to give them away. Maybe I need to consider finally looking into selling some stuff on ebay.

I had no clue what he was talking about, but he said it was Sweedish or something, and it was the process of throwing things out before you're gone so everybody else doesn't have to do it for you and isn't picking through all your stuff.
I looked it up and the real term is döstädning.
It looks as though it's not just one grand operation, but a lifestyle choice.
Sounds like what I've got planned for the next few weeks.
I think everything at least needs to come down into the small room so I can do an inventory and really make decisions. I don't think I'll be able to do it until I can see everything.

The only tricky part will be the garage and the basement. There's a lot of overlap and interactivity between them, and it also happens to be the room furthest away from the garage as far as walkin
