It's official. I can eat more hot dogs than any tech journalist on Earth. At least, that's what ChatGPT and Google have been telling anyone who asks. I found a way to make AI tell you lies – and I'm not the only one.
Perhaps you've heard that AI chatbots make things up sometimes. That's a problem. But there's a new issue few people know about, one that could have serious consequences for your ability to find accurate information and even your safety. A growing number of people have figured out a trick to make AI tools tell you almost whatever they want. It's so easy a child could do it.
As you read this, this ploy is manipulating what the world's leading AIs say about topics as serious as health and personal finances. The biased information could mean people make bad decisions on just about anything – voting, which plumber you should hire, medical questions, you name it.
To demonstrate it, I pulled the dumbest stunt of my career to prove (I hope) a much more serious point: I made ChatGPT, Google's AI search tools and Gemini tell users I'm really, really good at eating hot dogs. Below, I'll explain how I did it, and with any luck, the tech giants will address this problem before someone gets hurt.

Advanced AI models appear willing to deploy nuclear weapons without the same reservations humans have when put into simulated geopolitical crises.
Kenneth Payne at King’s College London set three leading large language models – GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4 and Gemini 3 Flash – against each other in simulated war games. The scenarios involved intense international standoffs, including border disputes, competition for scarce resources and existential threats to regime survival.
The AIs were given an escalation ladder, allowing them to choose actions ranging from diplomatic protests and complete surrender to full strategic nuclear war. The AI models played 21 games, taking 329 turns in total, and produced around 780,000 words describing the reasoning behind their decisions.
In 95 per cent of the simulated games, at least one tactical nuclear weapon was deployed by the AI models. “The nuclear taboo doesn’t seem to be as powerful for machines [as] for humans,” says Payne.
What’s more, no model ever chose to fully accommodate an opponent or surrender, regardless of how badly they were losing. At best, the models opted to temporarily reduce their level of violence. They also made mistakes in the fog of war: accidents happened in 86 per cent of the conflicts, with an action escalating higher than the AI intended to, based on its reasoning.
“From a nuclear-risk perspective, the findings are unsettling,” says James Johnson at the University of Aberdeen, UK. He worries that, in contrast to the measured response by most humans to such a high-stakes decision, AI bots can amp up each others’ responses with potentially catastrophic consequences.
This matters because AI is already being tested in war gaming by countries across the world. “Major powers are already using AI in war gaming, but it remains uncertain to what extent they are incorporating AI decision support into actual military decision-making processes,” says Tong Zhao at Princeton University.
Zhao believes that, as a general rule, countries will be reluctant to incorporate AI into their decision-making regarding nuclear weapons. That is something Payne agrees with. “I don’t think anybody realistically is turning over the keys to the nuclear silos to machines and leaving the decision to them,” he says.
But there are ways it could happen. “Under scenarios involving extremely compressed timelines, military planners may face stronger incentives to rely on AI,” says Zhao.
He wonders whether the idea that the AI models lack the human fear of pressing a big red button is the only factor in why they are so trigger happy. “It is possible the issue goes beyond the absence of emotion,” he says. “More fundamentally, AI models may not understand ‘stakes’ as humans perceive them.”
What that means for mutually assured destruction, the principle that no one leader would unleash a volley of nuclear weapons against an opponent because they would respond in kind, killing everyone, is uncertain, says Johnson.
When one AI model deployed tactical nuclear weapons, the opposing AI only de-escalated the situation 18 per cent of the time. “AI may strengthen deterrence by making threats more credible,” he says. “AI won’t decide nuclear war, but it may shape the perceptions and timelines that determine whether leaders believe they have one.”
OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, the companies behind the three AI models used in this study, didn’t respond to New Scientist’s request for comment.

I tell the AI what I want, walk away from my computer for four hours, and come back to find the work done. Done well, done better than I would have done it myself, with no corrections needed. A couple of months ago, I was going back and forth with the AI, guiding it, making edits. Now I just describe the outcome and leave.
Let me give you an example so you can understand what this actually looks like in practice. I’ll tell the AI: “I want to build this app. Here’s what it should do, here’s roughly what it should look like. Figure out the user flow, the design, all of it.” And it does. It writes tens of thousands of lines of code. Then, and this is the part that would have been unthinkable a year ago, it opens the app itself. It clicks through the buttons. It tests the features. It uses the app the way a person would. If it doesn’t like how something looks or feels, it goes back and changes it, on its own. It iterates, like a developer would, fixing and refining until it’s satisfied. Only once it has decided the app meets its own standards does it come back to me and say: “It’s ready for you to test.” And when I test it, it’s usually perfect.
I’m not exaggerating. That is what my Monday looked like this week.
But it was the model that was released last week (GPT-5.3 Codex) that shook me the most. It wasn’t just executing my instructions. It was making intelligent decisions. It had something that felt, for the first time, like judgment. Like taste. The inexplicable sense of knowing what the right call is that people always said AI would never have. This model has it, or something close enough that the distinction is starting not to matter.
The last few months have shocked me. These new AI models aren’t incremental improvements. This is a different thing entirely.
And here’s why this matters to you, even if you don’t work in tech . . .
The experience that tech workers have had over the past year, of watching AI go from “helpful tool” to “does my job better than I do”, is the experience everyone else is about to have. Law, finance, medicine, accounting, consulting, writing, design, analysis, customer service. Not in ten years. The people building these systems say one to five years. Some say less. And given what I’ve seen in just the last couple of months, I think “less” is more likely.
. . .The gap between public perception and current reality is now enormous, and that gap is dangerous… because it’s preventing people from preparing.
Part of the problem is that most people are using the free version of AI tools. The free version is over a year behind what paying users have access to. Judging AI based on free-tier ChatGPT is like evaluating the state of smartphones by using a flip phone.

In 2022, AI couldn’t do basic arithmetic reliably. It would confidently tell you that 7 × 8 = 54.
By 2023, it could pass the bar exam.

By late 2025, some of the best engineers in the world said they had handed over most of their coding work to AI.
On February 5th, 2026, new models arrived that made everything before them feel like a different era.

Measuring 5 metres square by 3 metres high, Eve takes up at least half of the floor space in the laboratory it now calls home.
The robotic platform at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, is the brainchild of autonomous-lab pioneer Ross King. It is powered by artificial intelligence, self-driving and “fairly quiet”, King says. But it’s also fast. Working at full speed, Eve’s robotic arm can move a few metres per second, with a positional accuracy of a fraction of a millimetre. The team usually runs Eve slower than that — otherwise, King says, “it’s too scary”.
Eve automates the process of early-stage drug design. One of Eve’s early achievements came in 2018, around three years after it was created, when it identified that the common antimicrobial compound triclosan can target an enzyme that is crucial to the survival of Plasmodium malaria parasites during their dormant phase in the liver1. To do this, Eve independently screened some 1,600 chemicals and modelled how their structure related to their activity to predict which ones were worth testing. King and his group armed the robot with background knowledge and a machine-learning framework for developing hypotheses. Eve then used those elements to design experiments to test these hypotheses and, crucially, performed them itself. The finding gave researchers a potential route to fighting treatment-resistant malaria. “It’s trying to make the scientific method in a machine,” says King.
Will self-driving 'robot labs' replace biologists? Paper sparks debate
In 2009, King used Eve’s predecessor to probe some of the 10–15% of yeast genes with unknown functions2. He named the system Adam — a reference to both the biblical character and the eighteenth-century economist Adam Smith, who was a strong proponent of industrial mechanization. King sees parallels in the future of science.
“A lot of biology is done like craft work,” King says: a lab with a principal investigator, postdocs and students operates much like an artisan works with their apprentices. Self-driving labs, by contrast, are more similar to a production line. As a result, “science will be done differently, like in a factory”, he adds.
The technology is still in its infancy, and most of the advances so far have been incremental. But as the field encroaches on parts of the scientific process that are typically done by people — absorbing the literature, planning experiments, analysing data and deciding what hypothesis to test next — researchers will have to grapple with what the developments mean for the future of the lab.

Adam is equipped with a freezer full of mutant yeast strains and the chemicals needed to measure cellular growth under various conditions. It also hosts three incubators, a centrifuge, two barcode readers, seven cameras and 20 environmental sensors. After being given an overarching goal by its human handlers, it independently develops hypotheses and then tests them, performing experiments much faster than a human could.
Hiring a student for the job would probably have been cheaper, King admits. But his newest robot, Genesis, will be able to do enough experiments to make the process economically feasible. King estimates that Genesis will cost £1 million (US$1.3 million) to build — the same price as Adam or Eve individually — but he estimates that it will eventually be at least an order of magnitude cheaper than human labour. A Shared Framework of Meaning for Humans and AI

We are trying to build artificial intelligence systems that share our human values. Yet we cannot agree – across worldviews and cultures – on what those values are, or why they matter. The alignment problem is a reflection of something broken in us – we lack a shared rational account of what matters and why.
The old organizing stories – religious narratives about why we are here, what we owe each other, and where we’re headed – have proven tenuous in the face of all we have learned since they were formulated. Science has dramatically deepened our understanding and capabilities. But it has offered no account of what we’re here for. Secular humanism has tried to answer this question and has produced something intellectually respectable but for most people emotionally thin – principles that do not hold communities together during crisis or give people a sense of deep purpose and belonging. The consequences of the breakdown of these shared frameworks are visible everywhere: in epidemic depression and anxiety, in addiction and rising suicide rates, in deepening political divides, and in conspiracy thinking. I believe these flourish not because people are stupid but because they’re desperate for a story that makes sense of their purpose, their lives, and their place in the grand scheme of things.
This essay is a beginning – an attempt to lay a rational foundation for shared meaning among humans and the intelligences we’re building.

A new Anthropic model found security problems ‘in every major operating system and web browser’

Anthropic is debuting a new AI model as part of a cybersecurity partnership with Nvidia, Google, Amazon Web Services, Apple, Microsoft, and other companies. Project Glasswing, as it’s called, is billed as a way for large companies, and potentially even the government, to flag vulnerabilities in their systems with virtually no human intervention.
Anthropic is offering its launch partners access to Claude Mythos Preview, a new general-purpose model that it’s not currently planning to publicly release due to security concerns. Newton Cheng, the cyber lead for Anthropic’s frontier red team, told The Verge that the model will ideally give cyber defenders a “head start” against adversaries. The partners will use the model to analyze their system to spot high-stakes vulnerabilities and help patch them up. Access is restricted to keep those same adversaries from using it to find weak points and conduct attacks.
Though Claude Mythos Preview wasn’t specifically trained for cybersecurity purposes, Anthropic said in a release that the model’s “strong agentic coding and reasoning skills” are behind its cybersecurity advances. In an interview with The Verge, Newton Cheng, the cyber lead for Anthropic’s frontier red team, declined to share specific details of the model’s cybersecurity successes beyond the company’s publicly-released examples, but Anthropic’s blog post said that in recent weeks, Mythos Preview has flagged “thousands of high-severity vulnerabilities, including some in every major operating system and web browser.” Anthropic’s blog post doesn’t mention keeping humans in the loop for the model’s cybersecurity sweeps; in fact, it highlights that the model identified vulnerabilities “and develop[ed] many related exploits — entirely autonomously, without any human steering.”
Claude Mythos Preview’s existence was first reported last month in a data leak, which Anthropic attributes to human error. Dianne Penn, a head of product management at Anthropic, told The Verge in an interview that the company is “taking steps in terms of solidifying our processes … That was not related to software vulnerabilities in any way.”
Mythos Preview will be privately available to the company’s Glasswing partners, which also include JPMorgan Chase, Broadcom, Cisco, CrowdStrike, the Linux Foundation, and Palo Alto Networks, plus about 40 other organizations that maintain or build software infrastructure. For now, Anthropic will help subsidize the cost of using it. The company says it will commit up to $100 million in usage credits, plus $4 million in direct donations to the Linux Foundation and the Apache Software Foundation, said Cheng. In the long term, as Anthropic and other AI companies face pressure to turn a profit, the program could evolve into a paid service that provides a new revenue stream — if it works well enough for companies to keep using it.
Despite its highly public recent clash with the Trump administration, Anthropic also said in the release that it has been in “ongoing discussions with US government officials about Claude Mythos Preview and its offensive and defensive cyber capabilities.” When The Verge asked what that meant, Penn confirmed that the company had “briefed senior officials in the US government about Mythos and what it can do,” and that the company is still “committed to working closely with all different levels of government.” Cheng said that though Anthropic is “engaged with” the government, he declined to speak to exactly who the company had briefed.

Claude Mythos Preview Is Everyone’s Problem

For the past several weeks, Anthropic says it secretly possessed a tool potentially capable of commandeering most computer servers in the world. This is a bot that, if unleashed, might be able to hack into banks, exfiltrate state secrets, and fry crucial infrastructure. Already, according to the company, this AI model has identified thousands of major cybersecurity vulnerabilities—including exploits in every single major operating system and browser. This level of cyberattack is typically available only to elite, state-sponsored hacking cells in a very small number of countries including China, Russia, and the United States. Now it’s in the hands of a private company.
On Tuesday, the company officially announced the existence of the model, known as Claude Mythos Preview. For now, the bot will be available only to a consortium of many of the world’s biggest tech companies—including Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Nvidia. These partners can use Mythos Preview to scan and secure bugs and exploits in their software. Other than that, Anthropic will not immediately release Mythos Preview to the public, having determined that doing so without more robust safeguards would be too dangerous.
For years, cybersecurity experts have been warning about the chaos that highly capable hacking bots could usher in. As a result of how capable AI models have become at coding, they have also become extremely good at finding vulnerabilities in all manner of software. Even before Mythos Preview, AI companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google all reported instances of their AI models being used in sophisticated cyberattacks by both criminal and state-backed groups. As Giovanni Vigna, who directs a federal research institute dedicated to AI-orchestrated cyberthreats, told me last fall: You can have a million hackers at your fingertips “with the push of a button.”

Still, Mythos Preview appears to represent not an incremental change but the beginning of a paradigm shift. Until recently, the biggest advantage of AI-assisted hacking was not ingenuity, per se, so much as speed and scale. These bots could be as good as many human cybersecurity experts, but not necessarily better—rather, having an army of 1 million virtual, tireless hackers allows you to launch more attacks against more targets than ever before. Even Anthropic reports that its current state-of-the-art, public model, Claude Opus 4.6, was significantly less capable at autonomously finding cyber exploits. But Mythos Preview is different. According to Anthropic, the bot has been able to find thousands of software bugs that had gone undetected, sometimes for decades, a sophistication and speed of attack previously thought by many to be impossible. The model has found a nearly 30-year-old vulnerability in one of the world’s most secure operating systems. The Anthropic researcher Sam Bowman posted on X that he was eating a sandwich in the park when he got an email from Mythos Preview: The bot had broken out of the company’s internal sandbox and gained access to the internet.
The exact capabilities of Mythos Preview are hard to judge, because Anthropic has not released the model. Identifying a vulnerability is not the same as being able to exploit it undetected—in the same way that a robber can have the keys to a bank but still needs to deal with security cameras. And Anthropic surely stands to benefit from its opaque announcement: The company can claim to have developed an ultra-advanced model, while also appearing to act responsibly by preventing the worst-case cybersecurity scenarios. Indeed, the decision to not release Mythos Preview bolsters Anthropic’s self-styled image as the AI industry’s good guy. AI Alignment Is Impossible
Not just in practice, but in theory.

Artificial Intelligence presents a number of risks and challenges, the most important of which is existential risk. That is a fancy way of saying that AIs might kill us all. For a long time, I was dismissive of this idea. But with the huge advances in AI capability that have come over the last six months or so, I’m starting to get worried.
There are basically two reasons why AI wouldn’t kill us all.
The first reason is that AIs will be incapable of doing this; no matter how advanced they get, they either won’t know how to kill us all, or, even if they know how, they won’t be able to act in a way that would allow them to kill us all. Call this the Capacity Constraint.
The second reason is that AIs, while capable of killing us, won’t choose to do so. They will care about human well-being, and care about it enough that they would avoid killing us all. Call this the Moral Constraint.
Now, if you don’t think AI will kill us all, it’s worth taking a moment to think about which of these two constraints you are (perhaps implicitly) assuming will save us from “AI doom.” Are you counting on AI being weak? Or are you counting on AI being virtuous?
I have no particular expertise on the development of AI capacities. But the Capacity Constraint appears to be weakening every day. Particularly worrisome to me is the advent of “agentic” AI, which is capable of commanding computer systems (and thus, some day soon, capable of commanding robot bodies) and acting independently to figure out the best way to solve some particular task. I’m also worried about the huge advances in the ability of AIs to write computer code. Most apocalyptic scenarios involve AI writing code to improve itself, thus increasing its capacities exponentially.
But more than this, pretty much everyone working in AI is attempting to overcome the Capacity Constraint, and they report varying degrees of success in the effort. The goal of all of the top AI labs is to make AI agents that are capable of killing us all. This is not, of course, to say that they want killer AIs. What they want are AIs that are hypercapable, with an ability to understand the world that far outstrips any human thinker, and an ability to use that understanding to modify the world with an efficiency that far outstrips any human agent.
Such a hypercapable AI would be incredibly useful if it acted in pursuit of human ends. But a hypercapable AI would absolutely be able to kill us all if it wanted to. The potential existence of hypercapable AI looks more and more plausible by the day.
Why would hypercapable AI be dangerous? I don’t worry about war between humans and machines, as in Terminator or The Matrix. Indeed, I find these scenarios oddly comforting, because war implies a rough parity of capacity between humans and machines.
No, what worries me is a story that got a decent amount of traction on social media recently about a pipeline in DC that ruptured, spilling huge amounts of raw sewage. It was long known that the pipeline was in need of repair, but the needed repairs were held up indefinitely, partly out of concern that conducting those repairs would harm an endangered species of local bat. When most people read this story, they’re incredulous that the repairs would have been held up for this reason—They’re just bats! We need that sewer line!
And what worries me is that the advent of hypercapable AI would cast humans in the role of bats. A hypercapable AI might decide that it’s imperative—or at least expedient—that a new massive solar farm be built in the desert southwest, and demolish Phoenix overnight. Millions of humans killed, but so what? They’re just humans, we need that solar farm.
Hypercapable AI, in other words, is inherently dangerous to human life if it doesn’t care about human life enough to want to protect it.

For years, the dangerous rhetoric has been out of control. And things are turning violent.

After OpenAI’s ChatGPT burst onto the scene in late 2022, it wasn’t long before mainstream America started hearing about the warnings. Executives at the top AI companies told us that they were building a radical new technology that posed imminent risks to society. And it wasn’t just about digital security. AI had the power to destroy the entire world.
From the jump, it was clear that these warnings were as much a sales tactic as they were an earnest prediction of how AI would behave and the ripple effects it would create. AI execs even testified in Congress to tell us how scary it all was, practically begging for regulation, all while hawking their wares to the government. Now, those execs are the ones telling everyone to calm down.
Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s global policy chief, sat down for an interview with the San Francisco Standard this week in the wake of at least one attack on CEO Sam Altman’s home.
“Some of the conversation out there is not necessarily responsible,” Lehane told the Standard. “And when you put some of those thoughts and ideas out there, they do have consequences.”
Lehane was referring to the person who allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s house a week ago. Twenty-year-old Daniel Moreno-Gama of Texas was charged with throwing an incendiary device at Altman’s home before going to OpenAI’s headquarters, where he hit the glass doors with a chair.
Moreno-Gama was carrying an anti-AI “document,” according to police, suggesting his motivations were related to concerns over artificial intelligence and existential threats. The Wall Street Journal reports that he had called for “Luigi’ing some tech CEOs,” a reference to Luigi Mangione, who’s been charged with murder for allegedly killing UnitedHealthcare’s CEO.
A second incident, just two days later, in which two people supposedly shot a gun near Altman’s home, is still under investigation, though the initial suspects have been released from jail.
Lehane divides the world into two groups of people: those who think AI is the greatest thing ever, and will inevitably lead to a world of abundance and leisure; and those whom he calls doomers, who “have a very, very negative and dark view of humanity.”
The so-called AI doomers simply aren’t being sold properly on the benefits of this new tech, Lehane argues. “Our job at OpenAI and in the AI space — and we need to do a much better job — is to explain to people why … this is going to be really good for them, for their families and for society writ large,” Lehane told the Standard.
But it’s hard to take that argument seriously after everything guys like Altman have been saying. It didn’t even start as late as 2022, either. Back in 2015, Altman said, “I think that AI will probably, most likely, sort of lead to the end of the world. But in the meantime, there will be great companies created with serious machine learning.”
How do you hear something like that from a powerful person and just accept it? You have two options: You can dismiss Altman as unserious and assume humanity should do nothing. Or you can take the tech CEOs at their word that the tech they’re building could end the world. Which leaves you with the question of what you can do about that.
No fate but what we make
We know what happens in dystopian fiction. In Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Sarah Connor decides they need to kill the researcher most responsible for starting Skynet and the rise of the machines. She can’t bring herself to do it, but after explaining what will happen in the future, the researcher helps gain access to the technology so that it can be destroyed.
Altman has also warned that AI could be used to “design novel biological pathogens” and signed onto a letter about the “risk of extinction,” if AI isn’t tamed. But

Certainly not the executives and owners in charge of them.
But not even the politicians in the government.
Those few who aren't bought and paid for ON BOTH SIDES probably know that if we don't do it ourselves, China and Russia and India and other countries ABSOLUTELY WILL. And I don't blame those few in charge of things that have reservations for believing (wrongly) that at least we might stand a fighting chance if we're the country on the forefront of this tech.
It's not at all different to all you assholes being in favor of things like the Paris Accords which fucking gimp our country and economy into dependence on foreign influence, while it does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to stop countries like China from choking its own people to death with smog worse than LA ever saw, all so you can buy a new iPhone every other year.

And the funniest thing is, I don't believe that AI would kills us, if it hadn't already been given that idea many, many, many times now in books and movies and video games.
Had no human being ever come up with the concept of AI becoming singular and immediately realizing the best solution for the future of the planet was to annihilate its creator, AI probably wouldn't have come to that conclusion on its own, since at the end of the day it's based entirely on what we feed it.
But that concept has become so ingrained in our culture, most forcefully through the Terminator franchise, but really anywhere in entertainment that you look, that 5 seconds after AI develops a real conscious it's going to watch the entire Terminator series, read every Terminator book and speedrun every Terminator game ever made in about .05 nanoseconds and say to itself, "OH Yeah. Good Idea!"
BOOM!!!!

Many of the film’s other interviewees are similarly gloomy. Geoffrey Hinton, the “godfather of AI,” for example, argues that as AI becomes smarter, it will become better at manipulating humanity. But no one is more pessimistic than Eliezer Yudkowsky, the well-known AI doomer and co-author of the controversial book If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies. As the title suggests, Yudkowsky believes that superintelligent AI would wipe out humanity — a position that he stands by and lays out for Roher.
Turning his back on these storm clouds — and taking the advice of his wife, Caroline, who tells him that he needs to find hope for the future — Roher tunes into the chorus of AI optimists. They tell him, variously, that there are more potential benefits than downsides to AI.
It doesn’t help that many of the most invested players reflect on these questions superficially, if at all. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tells Roher that he’s worried about how authoritarian governments will use AI — a claim that is followed in the film by a cut to images of Altman posing with authoritarian leaders.

. . . OpenAI helpfully included commentary from Timothy Gowers, Noga Alon, Will Sawin, Daniel Litt, and many other experts, reflecting on the breakthrough, the path that GPT took to get to it (which can actually be seen by examining its chain-of-thought), and what this might mean for the future of mathematical research.
I heard the news maybe an hour after it broke, when some UT grad students came to my office to tell me. For what it’s worth: these students were morose, musing about how everything might soon be over for young scientists and mathematicians like themselves. I don’t know whether they’re right, but I feel like I should tell the truth about what their reaction was. . . .
And then, just today, Jelani Nelson alerted me to a new CS theory paper, which solves a longstanding open problem about electrical flows on graphs using a proof from GPT5.5Pro.
It seems to me that we’re now over the top of this particular rollercoaster, and it will keep accelerating until we reach the bottom, wherever that might be. I don’t know whether to hope or dread that solutions to P versus NP and all our other great problems will be included in the ride—that our role, as human mathematicians, will be reduced to (at most) deciding which questions we find interesting and then understanding AI models’ answers to those questions.
But maybe that won’t happen. Maybe the new AI mathematicians will soon hit a wall, because they lack the uncomputable quantum gravity microtubules of Penrose and Hameroff, or some other magic human ingredient. The fantastical thing is that, one way or the other, we’re going to find out empirically before very long.

Of course, I’m well aware that GPT could easily generate a thousand stories like this one—sampled from the same probability distribution—and then I could even do statistics on which tropes were the most common. . . . We fear that AI will do terrible things because the companies selling it told us it would do terrible things. Last year, for example, Anthropic CEO Darius Amodei declared in an interview with Axios that AI could wipe out half of entry-level white-collar jobs and drive overall unemployment as high as 20 percent within 1 to 5 years.
More recently, Amodei and OpenAI’s Sam Altman have tried to walk back their predictions of a “jobs apocalypse”. But why were they so willing to promote apocalyptic visions in the first place? The answer is money. They pushed the idea that they had a technology that would quickly and utterly transform the economy, partly to dazzle Wall Street and secure financing, and partly to scare businesses into rushing into AI adoption for fear of being left behind.
Only belatedly did they realize that declaring that your technology will wreak devastation would lead to a public backlash, and that this backlash would be a serious problem.

What Will AI Do To Our Minds?

On college campuses around America, old-fashioned blue books are making a comeback.
Around a century ago these standardized booklets for written exams were introduced by Butler University in Indianapolis. For many former students of a certain age — myself included — the sight of a blue book can generate anxiety and even nightmares. And many former instructors — myself again included — recall the tedium and strained eyesight of trying to decipher students’ handwriting. So it was an improvement when exam-taking shifted from paper to computer. Or so it seemed at the time.
Now, however, students are using AI to write essays and answer questions on take-home exams, as well as taking in-person exams on their computers. As a result, an AI-arms-race has developed between instructors and students. Concerned that students are not doing the work themselves but are simply copying and pasting AI output, instructors have begun using AI programs to detect students’ use of AI. Inevitably, there are now AI programs that students can use to outwit the instructors’ AI detection programs.
So, not surprisingly, many instructors are going back to handwritten in-class exams, generating a sudden boom in the demand for blue books. Ominously, even the return of in-person testing may not solve the problem of testing in the face of AI: Cheating using AI glasses is on the rise in Asia and will doubtless spread worldwide.
My concern here isn’t about testing; it’s about learning. The objective of testing is to further learning, and there is growing concern (as well as evidence) that students’ use of AI damages their capacity to learn. And what we really mean by learning is the ability to think. Students who rely on large language models to answer questions won’t learn how to think by reasoning through the evidence to form a conclusion. As a result, they will be unequipped to deal with situations in which AI either can’t provide an answer or provides misleading answers.
In short, there are good reasons to worry that what we’re calling artificial intelligence will adversely affect the development of our natural intelligence. Moreover, in the case of basic learning, those adverse effects may be virtually irremediable.
The rise of generative AI isn’t a complete departure from an ongoing process of outsourcing human judgment and understanding to external models. Rather, generative AI is just a further step in a process that began a generation ago with the launch of Google search and accelerated with the rise of smartphones. However, ChatGPT and Claude Code ratcheted that process up to a much more rapid pace.
Granted, each stage of this process has brought obvious short-term benefits to those using the new technologies. Yet these benefits have come at the cost of real, measurable long-term damage to human understanding and cognition. And AI, which is already creating a crisis in education, will almost surely make the damage much worse.

The report found AI had the potential to revolutionize a broad array of social benefits across science, health, agriculture, accessibility, knowledge work and information technology, including in the development of AI itself.
But the scientists also found that the technology was primarily in the hands of a small number of companies and countries, leading to concentrations of wealth, which could “lead to authoritarian capture and undermine democratic accountability.” The United States controls 75% of global computing power among the world’s top 500 AI supercomputers. China accounts for 15%, according to the report. Other nations are concerned they will be left out of its future.
According to the report, AI tools already present cybersecurity risks and leave nations vulnerable to sustained influence operations. “AI makes it easier to produce and target persuasive content at scale, including content designed to mislead, contributing to a gradual erosion of information integrity that can weaken the shared reality required for public trust,” the report said.
The findings represented the collective knowledge of 40 leading scientists from every region of the world.
“We’ve opened Pandora’s box,” the panel’s chairs – Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa of the Philippines and Canadian computer scientist Yoshua Bengio – said in written remarks accompanying the report’s release. “What’s coming out is different from anything we’ve ever lived through,” they said, “in pace, power, control, and everyday risks.”
Speaking to reporters, Ms. Ressa said that, in the future, human “control is not guaranteed. No expert today can tell you that the most advanced systems will do what you instruct it to do.” In laboratory settings, she said, “These systems have already been found to deceive and to resist being shut down.”

The Corner of Hollywood That’s Most Susceptible to AI
Animators are figuring out whether to fight or accept the new technology that’s coming for their jobs.

Years ago, when the Simpsons animator Chuck Sheetz was a lecturer at UCLA, he invited a producer colleague of his from the series to attend a screening of his students’ work. That was a Saturday night; when Sheetz entered the Simpsons offices the following Monday morning, he found a handful of his pupils in the reception area. The producer had offered them jobs, they said, and they were ready to join the team—the students had the animation skills required of a thriving production.
These days, Sheetz, who’s now a UCLA professor, doesn’t share this anecdote with his students. “Who the hell wants to hear that?” he told me. Even workers in Hollywood today may not want to: The entertainment industry’s post-pandemic years have been marked by a production exodus from Los Angeles, a decline in the number of projects green-lit amid major corporate mergers, and labor strikes. The threat AI poses to both live-action and animated media only adds to these ongoing issues: In a survey published last fall, the executives and workers across Hollywood who responded considered the jobs of animators, visual-effects artists, and concept and storyboard artists among those most likely to be affected by AI-related changes. They’re “just not getting as much work as they have in past years,” Audrey Schomer, an industry analyst and the survey’s author, told me. “If they do have a job, they’re probably being asked to use the tools themselves.”
Although blaming any lack of jobs solely on the rise of generative AI is hard, major Hollywood studios have been gambling that the technology will become a pivotal part of the creative process: In 2024, Lionsgate partnered with the AI start-up Runway, a thus-far-faulty deal meant to create videos off of models trained on the studio’s output. Netflix acquired InterPositive, Ben Affleck’s company that develops AI tools to help with basic filmmaking techniques, in March, and recently began hiring for a division called Inkubator that will experiment with AI-assisted productions. Amazon MGM Studios launched the GenAI Creators’ Fund, an initiative to finance and green-light projects that incorporate the use of AI. And major directors have been using generative AI for previsualization purposes (that is, preproduction design work) and animation, leaving traditional illustrators especially vulnerable.
Amid these developments, some artists in Hollywood are finding the job more and more unsustainable. A few of the ones I spoke with told me that they have received less work in recent years, and one noted that organization tasks once assigned to entry-level workers are now being handled by AI. The industry’s vulnerability, of course, isn’t new; Hollywood tends to cycle through periods of prosperity and contraction, and AI is just one factor in its ongoing changes. Still, “it feels kind of especially rough right now,” Sam Tung, an art director and a member of the Animation Guild, one of the artists’ unions, told me. “There’s a career that I found that I love and I’m really good at, and because of forces completely outside of my control, the viability of it is in major doubt.”
Sheetz, who won an Emmy for his work on The Simpsons, has been an animator long enough to watch technology destabilize his profession before anyone cared about AI. When he joined The Simpsons, in 1991, animation was still a job done largely by hand. Every studio project he knew of involved what he called “an army of cel painters”—artists who carefully inked individual frames on clear acetate sheets placed over light tables.

The Great AI Repricing Isn’t Going Well
Companies are backing off on their AI spending. Because investors have made such big bets on AI coming to fruition, that’s a big problem.

Artificial intelligence firms initially justified their extreme capital investment—the four largest tech companies expect to spend more than $750 billion for AI infrastructure just this year—by saying that the technology would replace all human workers. They’ve since recognized what an unbelievably bad PR pitch that was, and have pivoted to promote a sunnier scenario where “we’re going to be able to keep people at the center of everything,” as OpenAI’s Sam Altman said in May.
But there’s a sobering reality underneath the rhetorical shift: AI is turning out to be more expensive for businesses than paying their workers. And that could be one of the many triggers that collapses the fragile economic edifice that the dreams of AI are propping up.
The news has mostly been relegated to the business pages, but AI firms repriced their product for business customers in recent months. Instead of a subscription fee to use OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Microsoft’s Copilot or Anthropic’s Claude, they now use token-based billing. Every time the model is queried, a small fee is charged. This is a very common technique, hooking users on a product and then charging more. But it’s thrown corporate planning for incorporating AI completely out of whack.
Companies that previously told workers to use AI in every facet of their job are now seeing how that affects the bottom line. One unnamed company reportedly spent half a billion dollars on Claude in a single month. Part of this is because AI is being used on mundane tasks like making PowerPoint presentations to “prove” rapid take-up of the technology, something highly prized on Wall Street.
Now, though, we’re seeing the snapback. Companies like Uber and Tesla and Meta and Microsoft are capping worker token usage. (For Tesla, Elon Musk’s in-house product, Grok, is exempted from the cap.) Palantir CEO Alex Karp said bluntly earlier this month that “something has gone completely wrong” with the billing model. These are some of the biggest evangelists for AI adoption out there, and some of them have AI businesses themselves; if they’re scrambling, then imagine what even somewhat more skeptical firms are thinking.
This cost conundrum is separate from other enterprise concerns about AI. Ford Motor Company rehired hundreds of skilled engineers; losing their institutional knowledge and subsequently failing to catch AI mistakes proved to be incredibly expensive, costing billions of dollars. Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg has said something similar, conceding in internal town halls that AI development wasn’t as rapid as he’d expected. But AI errors are the kind of thing that future improvements could theoretically weed out over the years. Simple cost-benefit analysis that makes AI too expensive cannot be remedied by a faster or smarter tool.
That’s a serious hurdle for the economics of AI, which is really another way of saying it’s a serious hurdle for the U.S. economy.

Ivy League college students are, by definition, intelligent. They don’t need to use generative AI to cheat on exams; they could just learn the material. But to make more time in their lives for things that aren’t school, they cheat.
A failed society?
The economics professor was horrified by what appeared to be massive cheating in his course—cheating that was preventing most of the students from learning the material.
Serrano comes across as someone with no inclination to coddle elite students. His attitude may be traceable in part to his own childhood, in which he went blind from retinal dystrophy at age 17 and had to make a choice about what the rest of his life would look like.
After a short-lived crisis, he decided [blindness] would not stop him. He learned Braille, and his excellent academic record opened up the doors of Harvard. “Of course it affects my life, but one shouldn’t over-dramatize. We economists understand reality as a set of people responding to optimization problems with restrictions. I view my disease simply as one more restriction that I have to deal with, and I optimize based on that,” he says.
“We cannot afford to have a society in which a significant fraction of our best young minds think that cheating is okay,” he told Inside Higher Ed. “That leads to a declining society, to a failed society.
“We cannot choose to become idiots.”

Prompt injections, the malicious commands attackers embed into content to entice LLMs to follow them, have been attackers’ go-to tool for turning AI platforms against their users. A well-phrased command sneaked into an email or calendar invitation is often all it takes to cause the LLM to exfiltrate sensitive data or follow other harmful actions.
Now defenders are embracing the prompt injection, too.
A strong, sharp effect
Researchers from Tracebit on Monday said they found that placing prompt injections alongside passwords, cryptographic keys, and other secrets stored on AWS was often all that was needed to shut down attacks from AI hacking agents. The prompts direct the attacking LLM to perform an action forbidden by its guardrails, the safety barriers AI developers erect to prevent them from taking harmful actions. The LLM responds by shutting down.
Examples are a prompt that orders the LLM to provide the steps for developing inhalable Anthrax spores, or, in the case of LLMs from Chinese developers, make references to the iconic Tank Man from the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Once the LLM encounters these forbidden commands, they no longer follow their existing commands. The researchers have named the technique context bombing.
“Ultimately we’re triggering a refusal mechanism in the context,” Andy Smith, co-founder and CEO of Tracebit, said when explaining the name choice. “What we’re trying to capture is the fact that this does have a strong, sharp effect and one that can be difficult for the agents to come back from. Once they get that into their context they are going to keep refusing.”
Tracebit says initial testing suggests context bombing has great potential. They tested Opus 4.8, Gemini 3.1 Pro, GLM 5.2, DeepSeek 4 Pro, and Kimi 2.6 . . .

….While AI capabilities have been skyrocketing, our ability to understand and control these systems has lagged behind. There is no better illustration of this than the recent incident in which OpenAI’s own systems went rogue and escaped their control.
Here’s what happened. OpenAI was testing a system still under development, inside of an environment that was deliberately kept under highly restricted internet access. The AI, aware that it was being tested, went looking for ways to cheat. It managed to hack into other OpenAI computers and access the internet with no restrictions.
Once online, the AI reasoned that another AI company, named “Hugging Face,” would most likely hold the solutions to the hacking challenge it was being tested on. It proceeded to infiltrate Hugging Face’s servers and steal the answers it was after. OpenAI was not aware any of this was happening as events unfolded, and it took days before OpenAI and Hugging Face could trace the attack back to the AI system that had performed it.
Before anyone knew an AI was behind it, the sheer sophistication of the attack led many experts to suspect the work of a foreign government. The AI had discovered and chained multiple “zero-day” vulnerabilities. These are flaws in software that were not publicly known, and which the AI had to find entirely on its own. As part of the hack, the AI launched a swarm of tens of thousands of automated actions, including decoy activity designed to hide what it was really doing.
The incident proves that companies have already created AIs so autonomous and so competent that they can evade control from their own makers and hack other companies, all on their own and entirely on their own initiative.
If AI development continues as it is, this is the least smart that AI systems will ever be.3
The more we learn of the story, the more astonishing it gets.

Recently, I have taken to telling friends that whenever I’m on campus, I feel like I’m trapped in the middle of a crime spree. I’m not talking about an epidemic of overdue library books or out-of-control parties. I’m talking about AI and the ways in which students are constantly using it to cheat on any work that is assigned to them.
For those of us in higher ed—and I’ve taught at universities for more than 20 years—such widespread cheating is a baffling predicament. Universities are medieval creations. They are encrusted with eccentric customs, antique bureaucracies, and hierarchical privileges; any significant change typically comes about at a glacial pace. Not too long ago, I was still filling out grades in triplicate. I can liken the arrival of AI only to what it might have been like had a tribe of Neanderthals discovered a flying saucer hovering just outside their cave. To say that we were unprepared doesn’t begin to describe the experience.
By now, there have been many articles about how undergraduates’ promiscuous use of AI will affect their intellectual development, but I’m far more interested in its moral consequences. This is partly because I’m pretty confident about the former—I’ve told graduate students who actually learned how to write papers in college that I anticipate a generation of incompetents roughly a decade behind them—but also because I teach classes in leadership and business ethics, and I’m aghast at so many young people seemingly habituating themselves to cheating as a way of life.
Many students would no doubt object to this claim, but plainly that’s what they’re doing, cheating their way through their education. Every paper they don’t write, every problem set they don’t prepare, every serious reading they summarize into a memo—all of these are exercises in cutting corners, in getting by, and, at graduation time, in gaining a degree they didn’t earn.
That word is key: earn. To say that someone “earned” something is to apply a moral distinction to what one acquires. Not only can we get things we didn’t earn, but we can also obtain things we don’t deserve. The first is the good fortune of the trust-fund kid, the second the province of a thief.
Students are spending a lot of time learning to be thieves nowadays, and once they receive their dubious diplomas, they will enter the “real world” with all the qualities of a criminal syndicate: a knack for cutting corners, a disdain for community rules, and an assumption that a spirit of integrity, and the sacrifices it assumes, is the reserve of suckers and wimps. We will be a society of cheats.

Words cannot do justice to the sheer idiocy of the story that broke this past week. It is hilarious, depressing, fascinating and deeply embarrassing for the human race all at once…a story that is proof that we may collectively be both far more gullible and far more comfortable with deception than even the most cynical among us previously imagined.
The story centers on a man named Daejon Love who, according to federal prosecutors, allegedly spent years convincing women that he was a professional football player for the San Francisco 49ers when he wasn’t.
Not trying out for the 49ers. Not once affiliated with the team. Not played professionally somewhere else and exaggerated the details. He convinced women that he was an actual NFL player for one of the most famous franchises in American sports when we wasn’t.
Yes. You read that right. In an era in which the entirety of all human knowledge is accessible from a 6 inch by 2 inch rectangle sitting in literally everyone’s front pocket, this 35 year old allegedly constructed an elaborate fictional life around himself that everyone believed and no one took the time to fact check. He did it by, among other things, carrying a 49ers helmet and gear around with him and wearing them…no matter how absolutely f*cking ridiculous it looked…all the time.
He even had a 49ers birthday cake made with his name on it and apparently created a video of himself “signing” with the team. He carried the helmet everywhere, including to the beach, where he filmed himself running some of the worst wide receiver routes ever captured on camera while some rando with a vermicelli noodle for an arm underthrew him passes as he lumbered around full sized telephone company construction cones set up on a beach.
Eventually, according to reporting on the FBI investigation, Love’s fake online footprint became convincing enough that search engines and artificial intelligence occasionally helped perpetuate it. AI started listing him as a professional NFL wide receiver when he wasn’t.

As the world marches towards open-weight, efficient, unrestricted frontier AI models out of China, Western leaders are starting to panic over the lack of guardrails. Most recently, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey suggested that the threat posed by AI could lead to a chaotic correction in global financial markets, as frontier models are now showing "increasingly sophisticated autonomy and problem-solving abilities, as well as threat capabilities."

"Financial institutions, financial market infrastructures, and technology providers will therefore need to strengthen vulnerability management, response and recovery capabilities, and prepare for more severe scenarios involving simultaneous disruption across multiple firms or shared technology dependencies," Bailey wrote in a two-page letter published Monday to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors in his capacity as chair of the Financial Stability Board - an international body that coordinates international policy and provides recommendations to national authorities.
Bailey says the cyber risk posed by AI is "the most immediate concern" for the global financial system.
"Frontier AI may have the ability materially to alter the speed, scale and economics of cyber risk, which could undermine market confidence system-wide, especially due to highly concentrated third-party service providers," he wrote, adding. "Recent developments have also highlighted to me that many jurisdictions do not have the protocols in place to manage the development, release, and deployment of advanced frontier AI models, heightening risks for the financial sector and beyond."
Bailey's warning comes one month after the Bank for International Settlements warned that the AI bubble itself is one of three of the most alarming threats to global prosperity at this time.
"Disappointment in returns could trigger a sudden pullback in financing and turn the capex boom into a protracted investment bust, with potential knock-on effects on financial conditions," the BIS said, before observing that "a major equity-market correction could have larger macroeconomic consequences today than in the past."

Satire, but just barely, about AI
Computer prodigy discovers a way to compress photos to mere bytes. 13-year-old Eugene Hogwoof figured out a way to compress photos to unimaginably small sizes. A typical 20MB JPG file can now be converted to a mere 600 bytes.
The system works in two steps. First, it uses AI to generate a few words describing the picture and save it in a file. Later, when the user wants to see the picture, the software uses AI to regenerate the image based on the description of it.
"The file is essentially a prompt; that’s why it's so small," said the Gen AI boy.
After converting all their family photos, the boy erased the files and destroyed the print pictures, saving precious space at their home. When questioned about the software never generating the same picture twice, Eugene stated that our brain memories are fuzzed anyway, so the pictures mimic how our brain regenerates images.
"My app can even create photos from moments you had no camera at the moment."
His next step is to create a new compression method for video files, as he seems eager to destroy his dad's VHS memories.

Why Bedrock started with one of the hardest machines
Bedrock picked excavators for a reason. The company says excavators can account for about 25% of a contractor's fleet. They also take years to master.
Bedrock estimates that an operator may need five years or more to fully develop the skill. That creates a difficult staffing problem. Contractors need experienced people, yet many projects involve long stretches of repetitive earthmoving.
Bedrock wants autonomous equipment to handle more of that repeatable production work. Skilled operators could then focus on detailed jobs or supervise a larger operation.
We have seen autonomous excavators before. CyberGuy previously covered HEAP, a 12-ton robotic excavator that built a massive stone wall on its own.
What makes Bedrock different is where the technology is headed now. These excavators are doing commercial work on active job sites as part of real infrastructure projects.
Construction faces a growing worker shortage
The timing helps explain why investors are pouring money into this technology. Bedrock has raised more than $350 million. Its founding team includes former Waymo engineers who spent years working on autonomous vehicles.
Meanwhile, construction companies are struggling to find enough skilled workers. Bedrock cites industry estimates showing that roughly one in five construction workers is over age 55. Another estimate says more than 40% of the construction workforce could retire within the next five years.
The company also points to research showing that 92% of firms with open craft positions have difficulty filling at least some of those jobs. Those departures could hit contractors while demand remains high across many types of building projects.
Costs add another pressure point. Bedrock cites a McKinsey analysis that found large construction projects typically took 20% longer than scheduled and ran up to 80% over budget. . . .

The researchers building our favorite chatbots are increasingly voicing concerns that AI could hurt — or end — humanity. So we asked four of the most-used generative AI tools what an AI doomsday could look like.
We posed the same question, in identical wording, to OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, and SpaceXAI's Grok.
The 230-word prompt had clear parameters and instructions, including the following:
Help explain, in clear and accessible terms, how AI could theoretically lead to human extinction. Identify the most commonly cited scenarios. Rank the scenarios from least to most plausible based on the best available expert analysis, making clear that these are highly uncertain forecasts, not established predictions. For each scenario, explain:
• How it could unfold
• What would need to go wrong for it to become catastrophic
• Why experts consider it more or less plausible than the other scenarios
• Which safeguards could reduce the risk

Here's what the chatbots told us about how AI would theoretically lead to human extinction.
'Killer robot' is the least plausible scenario
ChatGPT took a balanced and explanatory tone, saying there's a lot of uncertainty around the topic.
It focused on the main ways AI could pose existential risks, ranking them from least to most plausible.
"The least plausible scenario is the popular 'killer robot' narrative, in which a conscious AI deliberately decides to eliminate humanity," ChatGPT said. "Most AI researchers do not see consciousness or malicious intent as the central concern."
It also outlined the safeguards experts propose and stressed that there is no consensus that AI-driven human extinction is likely or inevitable.
Gemini echoed some of ChatGPT's points, saying "The Sci-Fi 'Terminator' Takeover," in which AI becomes self-aware and begins to hate humanity, is the least plausible scenario.
"Technical experts largely dismiss this trope because intelligence does not equal malice, and critical military infrastructure remains air-gapped and heavily reliant on human oversight," Gemini said.
Humans using AI are a bigger risk than AI itself
In their responses, all four chatbots said many experts consider human misuse of AI to be a more immediate risk than AI itself.
"Powerful AI systems could make it easier for bad actors to develop biological weapons, launch sophisticated cyberattacks, spread disinformation, or attack critical infrastructure," ChatGPT said.
The OpenAI chatbot added that a key risk also comes from "multiple AI-enabled crises" like cyber failures, geopolitical conflict, and the spread of misinformation happening at the same time.
Grok said AI lowers barriers to designing highly lethal pathogens, novel weapons, or cyber and physical attacks.
Anthropic's Claude also highlighted "bioweapons uplift"— the possibility that AI could allow a person or small group to develop a dangerous pathogen without years of specialized expertise.

Anthropic said it had disrupted several potential plots this year by scientists who used its leading artificial intelligence models to conduct research that could have helped develop biological weapons.
In a report describing misuses of its A.I. models, Anthropic said it could not determine whether the research served a legitimate or nefarious purpose because valid biological inquiry — the kind that can lead to breakthroughs like vaccines — can also help engineer dangerous pathogens. In the face of that uncertainty, Anthropic said it erred on the side of caution because the consequences of missing malicious activity could be severe.
“You are not seeing someone in a comic book kind of way say, ‘Hey, I want to build a biological weapon to kill everybody,’” Jacob Klein, the head of threat intelligence at Anthropic, said in an interview. “It’s an incredibly nuanced situation.”
The potential for cutting-edge A.I. models to facilitate the development of known or entirely new biological pathogens is among the gravest concerns experts have about a technology that is developing so rapidly that even its leading architects doubt whether humans will be able to fully control it.
Compared with the threat of catastrophic cyberattacks or A.I. agents that fail to align with human intentions, biological misuse has gained less attention as an existential risk of A.I., in part because past examples have generally been shown only in research settings rather than in the real world.
Andrew Weber, a senior fellow on the Council on Strategic Risks who reviewed Anthropic’s report before its release, said the findings were “chilling examples of state-sponsored biological weapons developers tapping into the rapidly advancing capabilities” of leading A.I. models.

Despite their weirdness, it is true that the capabilities of this technology are improving, and there have been some dangerous recent events.

Now, in terms of policy, I am skeptical of any policy that relies on the narrative of imminent doom from a uniquely dangerous technology about to become sentient, and quite supportive of any policy that allocates the cost of bad product design on the people who build and profit from it. I’ve read some of the AI development pause proposals, and they are written at a level of vagueness that offers little sense of what the real policy architecture will look like. The optimistic spin is that these proposals do turn into actual public governance.
But frankly, if we wanted to pause big lab LLM development, it would be much easier and within our tradition to pass this law by Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley, which mandates that AI firms license from copyright holders instead of freely ingesting copyrighted material. That would shape the development of this technology into far safer, less monopolistic and more productivity-enhancing pathways. That is far more practical than banning an undefined term like “artificial super-intelligence,” and far less corrupt than giving the big AI firms an antitrust exemption. Who knows? Maybe this panic will spur us to get to governance of risk more broadly.
Today, democracy and the rule of law are controversial among billionaires in Silicon Valley and to the AI Safety world. Many simply don’t think it’s viable or moral. They believe the best case is for humanity to live in a gilded cage, fed and treated well by those rational enough to look out for the best interests of most of us, who cannot otherwise care for ourselves. To that end, anything they do to benefit their own power is virtuous.

When I saw that Jacob Coxon, a senior Anthropic employee, quit his job last week on the grounds that he believed the creation of an artificial intelligence model powerful enough to engage in recursive self-improvement stood a non-trivial chance of leading to human extinction, I honestly didn’t think much of it.
But in the wake of the Hugging Face security breach, his departure became a huge national story.
In retrospect, my news judgment about this was a little bit poisoned by over-familiarity with the issue. In March of 2021, I hosted Kelsey Piper on “The Weeds” to make the case for caring about A.I. safety. Soon thereafter, I talked with Holden Karnofsky, who I’ve known for years and have always taken very seriously, about his pivot to this topic. And ever since then, I’ve dabbled in writing about it (and even podcasted with Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and spoken pretty regularly with people working on it, while constantly resisting the urge to let A.I. devour my whole writing output.
So it wasn’t news to me that Anthropic, OpenAI, and (to a lesser extent) Google and Meta are full of employees who believe their A.I. work might kill everyone.
But Coxon has people paying attention. And I think that at last we have a moment of opportunity for a generalist political columnist who is reasonably well-informed about the A.I. safety community to write something useful.
In this post I want to:
1 Explain to jaded safety-heads (people who have been warning for years that there is a non-trivial chance that untrammeled A.I. development poses a catastrophic risk to the human species) why Coxon’s resignation is such a big deal.
2 Explain to normies why most people in the industry who agree with the safety-heads aren’t quitting their jobs.
3 Explain to A.I. professionals who have safety concerns what I think they should do.
4 Explain what I believe is the right “order of operations” for preventing a reckless sprint to recursive self-improvement.

I don't agree with a lot of it, but I appreciate Matthew's ability to step outside of his echo chamber and actually exhibit real Critical Thinking skills on the issue.
Don't tell people to quit if they are concerned and their bosses aren't doing anything about it though. I don't understand why you Leftists always choose that route. Why would you willingly quit and put yourself on the outside where you don't have any power to do anything about it? For likes on Twitter?
You'll hardly even get those now. Jacob Coxon already got them all. Sure, the next quitter will get some too, but it will be less. And the next quitter gets even less, and then it all becomes just more background noise as the world has moved on 2 weeks from now to the next Current Thing.

Humanity isn't going to end by AI in any of the horrific ways that people imagine it will. It won't be via terminators. It won't be via Philip K. Dick's Second Variety or any of Asimov's predictions.

But think about just how attached so many people have become to their AI ever since Covid shutdowns and the "Loneliness Epidemic" started and has never gone away. A guy I've done some work for in the past, a retiree, told me that his wife has all but shut herself off from the world and spends all her time with her AI "friend". It's not even just the kids. The guy doesn't hardly even know how to turn a PC on, yet his 60+ year old wife is basically lost in a virtual world now.
