I don't imagine I'm going to be good for much today.
I stayed up all night cleaning. 
Basement is almost entirely clean now. I'd say maybe another half hour to organize some final things staying down there and to move things out to the garage, and maybe another hour and a half if I wanted to deep clean everything. Not including the bathroom.
Got yet another bag of trash out, and everything that was going to the garage I had ready so far is out there in my big work bench to sort through.
At 5:30AM it was disgusting out there. Had to be 80 degrees already and so humid my glasses fogged up and I could barely see anything.
I think I'll run my errands this evening for sure. I've got to remember to go to the hardware store and buy those screws for the ceiling vent diffusers. Should only be about $10, and that's a steal compared to trying to find the half of them that are missing and cleaning off all the crud and rust from them. I'll just zip them up in there and then paint them white with an artist brush.
If I get up early enough to do some more work and take a shower to go out when it finally starts cooling off a bit, I may finish that basement before I go out.

Not trying to get political or anything, but perhaps tariffs on Canada for lumber would actually deter some of that potential behavior?
How good are the local/regional/countrywide politicians when it comes to protecting all of that. Do you trust those in power to keep good on those promises.
Native Tribes and promises aside, nobody should ever think of touching trees with that kind of history anywhere in the world that they're still growing is my belief. Regrow everywhere we can, and use that to replenish our needs. We don't need to destroy everything with history like this. Because if we do that, we'll still be in the same position we were, short on everything we need, but now nothing is still left that wouldn't take another 5 to 15 lifetimes to regrow from scratch, assuming that our planet is even capable of doing that under different circumstances than those which these large trees flourished.
I would think if it's too expensive for logging companies in Canada to even consider cutting that stuff down, it can't be a bad thing. I don't even know, Brenda... are there even still tariffs against Canadian lumber imports?

I hear ya. I asked my dad one time when I was little if he liked snow answer, "Nope. Seen too much of it when I was growing up." Have to remember that he grew up in Southern Alberta and if wanted snow believe me they got SNOW. And with capital letters.
No worries and it is a fair question. There are tariffs on what is called soft wood lumber that goes to the States has been for years.
Areas of trees that are old growth fall on the provincial government to protect. Local governments at the city level can't do anything. But there are large parcels of land that provincial governments have protected over the years. Some have been made into parks by both provincial and federal governments. In the last few years the provincial governments have been skirting the line between keeping their word and letting logging companies in.
Oh, I agree those old growth trees should never be touched because they can't be replaced. It would again take centuries for trees to hit the height and width these trees are. And seedlings like I said have to be in the ground at least 20years before they can be logged. There are rules about how much width and height a tree has to have before the companies can go after it.
Depending on where they want to cut it is expensive. It means lots of heavy equipment as they are going farther into steeper areas of the province. My province isn't that flat. We have coastal mountains on one side and other almost mountains then we have the Rockies which are our natural border with Alberta. As I said up there are tariffs but that has been a back and forth thing between BC and Washington State for years. They up the tariffs and then we tariff something.

Overall, a pretty awful day in JackWorld...
After working all night well into the morning, I didn't get much sleep, because I was woke up by thunderstorms. Not too bad at first, but then the air raid sirens came a few hours later and things got BAD again. Hail, stupid winds, so much rain at one time the gutters can't do their job, etc. Looks like in total over 60,000 houses were without power again.
Don't know why they fixed me pretty quick this time. I thought it wasn't a bad outage until my power was back up about 4 or 5 hours later and I found out that many houses lost power again.
After my power went out, I figured I'd run my errands early but during the time I took a shower, the city sewers were not working again and the goddamned street was flooded so I was trapped. Well... Fuck me.... I figured I was going to let the sump ride for a while before getting the generator out, but if the city sewer isn't working that's not an option.
So I had to move all the damn closet doors and horses and the bookcase far out of the way of the window so I could get the generator plug outside and not screw up any of my pieces while I made a big mess again after finally getting everything cleaned up from the last catastrophe.
Sump was going every 7 minutes or so for about 4 hours, so no way I would have gotten away with waiting until the power came back on because of that fucking city sewer not doing its job for the 5th time so far this year.
I managed to install the ceiling lamp before the power came back on and do some more reorg in the basement. After the power was back on I ran my errands and that was a joke.
My Menards sucks ass and has such a small selection of screws compared to their megastores or just any Home Depot, so I wasted about 30 minutes there and didn't buy anything. I needed self-tapping #8 screws that were at least 2" long and apparently those aren't important enough to carry at the small stores.
At least Aldi was open.
But the Dollar Tree wasn't. Their power must have been down too. I knew better than to try it because one car was leaving and there weren't any cars in the parking lot. I stopped anyway and thought maybe I finally got lucky and wouldn't have any lines for a change, but the doors were locked. All the lights were on and one of the register lights were on. Power must have been out for them and all the employees left and they didn't think to turn off the Register 2 light, I guess.
I got 3 of the vents installed and it took me about 2 hours. They're the biggest bitch in the world to put back up just like I knew they would be. The kitchen one was where I finally figured out what I need to do to get the rest of them up without my murderous rage manifesting tomorrow, but by that time I already did damage to the paint job on one living room vent, and I think I damaged the ceiling paint by rubbing the back of the other living room vent along it to try to line up the 2nd screw. I don't know if I can wipe that off or if it's damage to the finish. I'll find out tomorrow. But I might be doing both spray paint and ceiling touch-ups after this crap.
I figured out the trick is to just get one good screw into the octopus vent that's just resting on the drywall, then just drill new holes for the other 2 or 3 screws that need to go in, depending on how many holes that particular vent needs, then screw them in by hand. The other 3 shouldn't be bad, but it's dark out now and I'm cooked.
I was up all night and had to deal with nothing but bullshit today.
Here's hoping it's a nice Tuesday.
Weather should be cool and freakin' normal for once, so at least we got a head start...

Are you still stuck, Brenda? Sorry. Just saw this now.
If you hold the CTRL and ALT buttons to the left of the space bar and then press the DEL or Delete Key, which should be somewhere to the right of the main keyboard, it will bring up a menu. From there you can just reset your computer and everything should be fine when you bring it back up.
(You'll probably have an option pop up in the center of the screen to log out and then you could log back in and it should be good too, otherwise you'll need to locate the power icon which looks like a circle with a little vertical line at the top. It will pull up a menu and restart should be one of the options).
Worst case you could just power it down and power it back up, but I don't recommend doing that unless absolutely necessary.

I had a chance to finally relax and feel better about the day.
Despite the challenges, some work did get done. And it appears that I didn't need to spend the $13 on a 30 ct box of self-tapping screws, although that would have made it a LOT easier to do than using these regular sheet metal screws that need existing holes, otherwise they just push the vent higher the more you screw them in. I think I figured the trick out and now I know why there were already so many existing holes that didn't seem to have a rhyme or reason.
I have some pics... I wanted to show the both of you the two chests I still have out there. One is the really nice hope chest I was telling you about, and what appears to be some sort of ancient tool chest. I want to do a little research on that one before I do anything to it.
The nice chest actually looks pretty good as is except for that unfortunate hole in the top. Maybe all I would really need to do is fix the bottom and put some more poly on it or something. I dunno... I'm not going to be messing with that for quite a while. Hopefully I can clear out enough space elsewhere to put it where it is no longer in the way of other stuff until I get to it. Maybe I'll even bring it in the house and keep it in the small bedroom after I finish dehoarding.
Inside are the legs to my Grams old huge dining room table. Don't know exactly what I'm doing with them yet, but you can see the two end chairs that had arms on them in the background too. They'd need a serious reupholstering, but they're in pretty nice shape otherwise.
Here's my light for the basement bedroom. Before work shot, shot of the old fan, and final shot of the fixture installed after it got cleaned up and spray painted.
And exactly one half of the ceiling vents finally done after 15 years.
Slow and steady wins the race. That rabbit can get bent.
I still have my gay chef that my sister-in-law and brother bought me while they were out antiquing. I also have a cool wood piece that was beveled nicely on the ends and had all 3 of the gay chefs painted on it from them too. I know it's packed away in the attic in one of those boxes, so I'm bound to find it soon. I'm going to have to find a home in the kitchen for that too.
They really loved that kitchen. Not that they'd EVER think of doing that in their house, but they loved that somebody else had it.
Yanno what... I'm going to go back in time and see if I can find a shot before I pulled any of that Chef border down and repainted the walls. I'm sure I have a similar before shot of the kitchen to the one I just posted.

Not having a good afternoon evening anyways. My trip maybe cancelled because of WestJet and its flight attendants can't reach an agreement. I put a cut ear of corn into air fryer and had it on at a wrong temperature. Burned it a little but at least I didn't make popcorn. Then this happened. Ugh!

I'm not sure what you did, Brenda, and without seeing a screenshot of it I don't think I'd be able to figure it out. I can tell you that you most likely did a "Hotkey" function of some sort. As in you were possibly holding down the CTRL or ALT keys, or possibly SHIFT and then you accidentally pressed another key while one or several of those were held down, and Windows automatically did the thing it's supposed to do when you hit that key combination. But since I don't know what you did or what you're looking at right now, the best thing to do is just restart the computer one way or another.
Honestly, if nothing else works you can just hold down the power button until your computer shuts off and then start it up again and it should work.
I just don't like recommending that because Windows really doesn't like that, and I can't remember which version of Windows you're using.
Chances are very, very good that it would boot right back up and everything would be fine, but it might force a disk check that would take a while if you have anything before Windows 10. I'm sure you've lost power before and your computer was on and it ended up being okay. Powering the machine down wouldn't be worse than a power outage.

You should be fine. Just hold the power button down. Give it about 20 seconds. Then press power again.
It should load up fine. It may ask you if you want to perform a "chkdsk" operation on your primary "C:\" drive. If it does, you could press any key within the first 10 seconds to skip it, since it's almost certainly fine.
You've had a power outage with that computer before, I'm sure. Right?
Never had any problems starting it back up, did you?
This isn't as bad as your computer getting a power outage jolt as its being powered down incorrectly, and it's still working.

Yeah. I just had another power outage on 3 computers. About the 6th one in 2 months, probably. Except for a few issues I had on one of the computers running Windows 11 that I had to fix and babysit until it came back up, everything else came up fine every time. None of the Windows 10 installations gave me problems.

WOW. I can't believe the filth I lived in for so many years before I got serious and knocked that kitchen out.
I almost throw up a little in my mouth just looking at what it looked like when I moved in. Especially seeing that can of Icehouse sitting on the left side of the sink.
And the wrought iron overlook, and that gross and peeling chessboard floor.
YUCK!
And what it looks like now.
It's pitch black at night when this photo was taken, and the room is that bright from the single light under the stove hood. If that room were still dark stained wood and crazy chef colors, that would suck up so much of that light I probably would have had to turn the fan lights on to even snap a picture you could see.
When I find that picture of the gay chefs in the attic, I'll be sure to snap it. It's a picture of all 3 chefs that I think is exactly the same pose on the right side of this wallpaper banner.
And since I showed the vents in the living room, these were the closest pics I could find before I started doing work in there.
Yup... Another room where the windows were just plastered right in and given the weakest little windowsill you've ever seen.
But because I didn't want to make a new large sill from scratch like I did for all the windows in the 2nd floor bedrooms, I just fabricated 4 blocks, 2 for either side of the small and big window. I cut them to the exact sizes I needed them, then I probably spent about half a day running back and forth to my work bench in the garage to use my belt sander to shape them to match the end of the windowsills exactly.
Once they were perfect, I CAREFULLY made counter-sink holes from the sides of them and put some beefy wood screws into the sill and used wood putty to make it all look like one piece before covering up the painted plaster with proper wooden jambs and a nice wide frame.
Oh... and those leather pieces in there now are the real deal. They were my buddy's basement furniture we used to lounge on while watching movies before we put the pool table in the basement and there wasn't room for them anymore. I got those, and his fireplace heater that's like $500 or $600 new (and that's the one out in the porch with the TV on it).
That leather was never treated right, and I thought I'd never fix the place where he had his greasy hair on the back of the single seat recliner, but the leather cream I got on Amazon was amazing. I can't remember the first step, but I do believe that I washed it down and scrubbed the hell out of certain parts like that with water and baking soda, if memory serves. Only after that was done and wiped off completely did you start applying the cream. 2 coats, each with a buff-out, and aside from a few spots on the sides where there are some very minor tears, they look brand new. I should give them just one more coat soon just t

Now I'm worried that a power down restart brought you right back to the same problem, but now you might not even be able to get on your browser and that's why you haven't gotten back to me yet.

If there's any possible way that you are able to read a post here but you just can't reply for some reason, please try the following because I think you may have turned on the "Magnifier Tool" on accident. If that is what happened...
HERE IS THE FIX:
Press and hold the "Windows Logo Key" (the key with the 4 squares on the bottom, to the left of the Space bar) and tap the Esc key (top left corner) at the same time.
If you're in the Magnifier tool now on accident, doing that will make your screen normal again.
***NOTE: If your keyboard is old and you don't have a Windows key, you will instead need to hold the CTRL and the ALT keys to the left of your space bar and then hit the letter "M" and that should get you fixed.
I hope you can see this Brenda!!!
I hope you're not freaking out and you think to go to the Library to see if there was an update before you go to the trouble of packing it up and taking it somewhere.

I should have seen this as a potential problem.
But even if I didn't just say screw it and do a hard restart with the power button and I walked her through a proper restart, it wouldn't have fixed this issue and Brenda still wouldn't be able to reply. If she's in the Magnifier Tool, that's an Accessibility Option and it's persistent between sessions even if you reboot your computer with purpose through the Windows restart.
The ONLY way she can get out of that the Magnifier Tool is if she can read this and knows to Hold Windows Key and Hit ESC, or she has somebody come to her place or takes the computer somewhere to somebody who would know to do that.
And that's even assuming from the limited description she gave of the scenario led me to the correct conclusion. If it's not the Magnifier Tool that was triggered and it's something else, I don't know if Windows Key and ESC will even work.
What an ASININE TRAP.
Are you kidding me? This shouldn't even be a remote possibility that somebody with limited computer knowledge could ever accidentally screw up their settings so bad they can't use the computer even after a restart. Make it a 3-key combination at least M$!
If she's in the magnifier tool, everything is zoomed in 200% and the screen pans to the sides and the top and bottom with the mouse. If she's moving the mouse around quickly and panicking, the screen is just flying around all over the place. The big problem is that the task bar disappears completely, so she can't even scroll down to the bottom and at least see the start button.
WHY WOULD THEY MAKE THAT PERSISTENT BETWEEN SESSIONS????
If it didn't start her right back where she was with her browser open to this page, what benefit is it to anybody with vision issues to restart Windows into this state with no task bar? I don't even get it.

I don't blame you for being confused. You know what you're looking at on your screen about as well as I do without being able to see it.
You NEED to try that restart again. I updated the other thread with a picture of where that power button is, but I'll post it here again now. You need to click on that and it will open up a menu with 3 or 4 options and you need to select "Restart". If it is not a Magnifier Tool or another accessibility setting, this should get you fixed.
Just be sure to look at that other thread and write down the 4 commands I gave you to try if this doesn't fix the issue. I believe it will, but just in case one of those four should fix it.
It's not dumb to look at Google for the answer. That's what I've been doing ever since you disappeared last night.
The only way I ever got as good at computers as I am today was by "breaking" things all the time and then needing to learn how to fix them. And once the internet was a part of my life, most of that research was done online.
Just look at this as another real reminder that you should have a second computer or even better a cheap laptop. That way you can still get online and we can troubleshoot these things in real time instead of only when you can get to a library and you're not sitting right next to the computer you're trying to fix.
We'll fix this. Just breathe.

I never would have thought it was all that bad actually, since my neighbors 2 doors down across the street and everyone else on down still had their power. We're on the "old circuit" somebody who used to live here once told me. Usually when I have a power outage it's anywhere from 2 hours to 5 hours. This was only about 4. And it didn't even feel like it because I was working most of the time. Most of my power outages happen after dark, so I'm not usually able to do that.
I can't believe that there isn't a huge limb down from that tree. I snapped some pictures as evidence. There appears to be about a 50 ft. dual limb that was snapped off in the last storm and is hanging on by a thread like the Sword of Damocles over my house right now. The whole tree is bright green except for about the 5% that's all dead and just waiting to come crashing down on my roof the next time the winds come hard from the south.
Really pissed it didn't fall. Both storms yesterday were from the Northwest and then the North East later in the day.

Hi SIX. I bit the built and did a restart this morning. Really basic turned off the monitor and the drive then turned everything back on. Walked away and let it do its thing.
As I said in the other thread. This is a refurbished drive and the monitor was as well until it died earlier this year. I am thinking I may have to call the person who got it for me and let him know it might be on its last legs.

Nothing you've told me so far makes me think that the computer is dying, but you never know. Like I've been saying, you should have a backup laptop. It doesn't have to be expensive or even new. As long as it can run at least Windows 10 and get you on the internet even temporarily while things like this happen, it's so much better for you than worrying and trying to catch me or somebody else while at the library.
And if you had that laptop and your computer does die, you at least have a way to still get online while you're figuring out another desktop solution.
In the meantime, please answer these questions.
1. Do you still have your book backed up on at least one thumb drive?
2. Do you know all of your online passwords?
3. If you don't know them all, do you know how to backup your passwords? (You can also backup other settings in your browser, such as all of your bookmarks).
Any backups you make should also be copied to your thumbdrive with your book on it. That way, if your computer dies, you can use the same browser on your new computer (and also a backup laptop right now) and you can import all of those things and it will behave exactly as it did before your computer died.

I could never say for sure, but I seriously doubt it. If Google was holding computers hostage like that for refusing to update, I know I would have heard about that story already.

Occam's Razor here leads me to believe that this is probably the culprit. There are an awful lot of hidden "hotkey" combinations that can do a wide variety of things from copying and pasting text, to sticky shift keys, to blowing up the image on your screen 200%, and I'm sure at least 100 things I'm not even aware it's capable of doing.
I wouldn't let that bother you. 99% of the time that you do something like that on accident, as long as you know how to restart the computer it should fix the problem when it comes back up just like it did now.

Hey Sigs! I figured out how to clean those frosted glass vanity shades that I told you had soot on them.
When you said Crud Cutter, I knew I didn't have any of that, but I remembered I had maybe half a can of Easy Off left from when I cleaned out that oven after the kitchen cabinets were done, but before the new flooring was put in. Hadn't used it once since then.
While my power was down and I was installing that ceiling lamp in the basement that I'd sprayed down, I also gave a really nice coating of Easy Off on the shade and let it cake up and sit there for about a day and a half before I scrubbed it all out today.
If you don't count the lip that's still dark, that got rid of at least 90% of the darkness.
It was actually good enough for me, so long as I could now put that part of the shade in the rear and it wouldn't be easily notible to anybody, but no...
Now I have to do the other two as well.
Apparently these things were FILTHY, and my rub down with wipes didn't accomplish anything. Either that, or there was a yellow tint applied to the frosted glass that the Easy Off removed too. I know nobody smokes inside my buddy's house, but what I'm assuming now is that the people who lived there before him did. That's what it looks like to me when seeing the clear one next to the other two. Nicotine stains.
So all 3 of them are getting a treatment now. The first should sparkle by the time it's done. Maybe I'll do the other two a second time too, but I want to see how they look in a day or two after a good scrub. Since they weren't charred, 1 application might clean them up really nice.
It's kind of crazy because i just used up the rest of my wood stripper for that bookcase the other day in my garage, and it basically behaves exactly the same as easy-off does. You apply it liberally and just let it dry out as it's doing its chemical thing. Since it's glass, I don't have to be babysitting it and just get to it whenever and it works, apparently. With the wood though, you wait until it dries enough for a shell to dry on the outside and it turns from pink to green, that's when it's done working and you scrape and scrub it all off.

I think I'll install those other 3 grates right now. Hopefully they go at least somewhat smoothly and I don't drive myself nuts with it. They're not fun to do, but I think I figured out the trick on the 3rd one. Finger's crossed.
If I get all those up, I'm going to do some touchups and get the screw tips covered with my spray can, while shielding everything else from the spray with probably some newspaper in the other hand. I should probably put down a drop cloth underneath each one as I'm going along just in case. I don't usually spray anything inside the house, so I'm not sure how much of the paint would actually get anywhere else and if you'd notice it if it did.
I've got 10 days left now to finish my aunt's chest. I'd better get a move on that soon too.
I'm going to finish what's left to clean up in the basement, which now is only about 30 minutes worth of work, probably. After doing that, I'm going to move my miter saw off of the sawhorse table in the nasty back bedroom and just put it somewhere down there off the ground for now, and I'll put the wood sheet I've been using as a table top in the closet on some bricks where I've got a few very large sheets of cardboard for drops and to protect anything behind the miter saw from getting sawdust all over.
I'll then be able to have all 4 of my bifolds on horses in the other room as I already do, while also having her chest on the horses in the back bedroom and I can work on the doors, the bookcase and the chest all at the same time.
I love it when a plan comes together.

I'm going to need to bring more horses down. If I don't get those bifolds done yesterday to free those sets up, I'm going to need a set for the top and for the bottom. I don't know I was thinking I could do both on one pair.
I did get the inside of both pieces stained. I can do that and put all the coats of poly I want on the single set of horses, but if I don't finish those doors pronto, I've got to go out and get my ratty set of lumber horses that I'd rather not have in my house ever for any reason.
Didn't even touch the vents yet, but that was mostly because I couldn't remember where I laid my drill down after doing the first 3. Never found it in the basement by the time it was clean, but just found it in the kitchen by the sink so now I can do that.
I forgot that I should have drilled the holes for the new handles before I started doing anything, but once that stain dries I'll put a bit of painters tape on the insides to prevent blowout and just take it easy when drilling the holes.
Got my half can of clear gloss water based poly ready and my 220 grit sandpaper to scuff sand each layer before the next layer goes on. I'm probably going to be doing about 4 or 5 layers here. I want this thing super shiny.
I think I'm going to try doing the grates first. If they go smoothly and don't start driving me nuts, it will be one more think knocked out and I can put my pure focus on everything that's down in the basement for me to work on.

Wow! Bathroom just got another upgrade and I didn't even install the vent yet.
I put the vent up in the bedroom and the trick helped, but every single diffuser is different, and it appears that the octopus arm vent system has different ends upstairs than the ones that were downstairs, because of course they are. Each one is presenting its own little unique problems, but they're eventually getting done.
I was just going to do all 3 of them, but the sun is on the other side of the house now and I'm not getting the daylight I was getting earlier. So when I moved to the bathroom I decided now was the time to clean those glass shades off if they were ready.
Boy were they...
No need for a 2nd application on the two that weren't burnt. You can see just the faintest residue of it toward the edge of the last one, but I'm done messing with that. Easy enough to turn that shade a particular way where nobody is ever going to know.
I can't wait to see how different these look now. I snapped a picture of the first one I cleaned compared to the other two, then another one with a really clean and dry piece held up with the groady unclean one and the burnt one that was getting a 2nd application, as well as all the YUCK that was on the sink from the now clean and dry shade.
It had to be nicotine. I'm convinced of it. Just turns an orangish brown color of yuck. These shades weren't amber. They were frosted white.
Who knew?
Gonna get my last 2 vents up and figure out what I'm doing next. So many choices now, but I'm under the gun with my aunt's box with all the drying time in between coats, so if I don't have a plan by the end of tonight how to tackle all of this going forward, I'd better come up with one tomorrow.

Finally got all the vents up. Wish I hadn't tried to spray the touchups and the screws though. Got a little damage to clean up on one of the diffusers now. I ended up taking the cap to the can and spraying a bunch of it inside of the interior "cup" that protects the nozzle and I just painted the screws and the minor touchups with an artists brush. I'll fix the other one tomorrow after everything has had a chance to dry out.
One more piece of the puzzle solved.
If I do more tonight, which I probably will, it's likely going to be a coat of primer and maybe the first coat of paint on the bifold that still needs it in the back and the bookcase. I'll have 9 more days tomorrow to get the box done. If I keep with it tomorrow even on the single horse, I should get enough coats of poly finished on the inside to be done with that part and I can move on to the outside after I get the doors off the horses... hopefully tomorrow if everything goes well.

All ready to start painting now. I forgot that I had to remove all the crappy old hardware from the linen door, and boy was that interesting...
The roller piece I had to cannibalize and put in the louvered door, otherwise I would have had to buy a new track and all new hardware for that door. And getting that in required wedging a whole lot of other stuff in with it in that 3/8" hole because it was only about a 1/8" hole with spiky metal shoved into it. The same with the top bar that SHOULD spring but didn't with this ancient track.
And, I kid you not, the bottom nub of a bar that I thought was rusted and broken to only 1/4" actually was adjustable. it was basically the end of a super beefy wood screw, and I could have adjusted that the entire time by breaking the paint seal and screwing it counterclockwise. OMG... That would have saved me so much drama 1/3rd of my life ago... laugh:
Fortunately, whoever did those actually did a nice countersink on them, so it was really easy for me to get my 3/8" drill bit out and make the larger holes I needed for the new hardware.
Took the time to actually scrape off all that dripped paint on the back of that bifold door even though I said I wasn't going to and it's ready for primer and paint.
So all my vents up and hit with touch up paint on the screws and any nicks. Vanity light glass shades sparkling with that Easy Off treatment and back in place. Inside of my aunt's box is stained and ready for poly after I drill out the holes for the handles and clean up the mess. And I'll be getting at least one coat of primer on the back of the linen bi-folds and the bookcase tonight. Maybe even get to painting if I'm still feeling the work.
ETA: Primed everything.
That bookcase takes FOREVER though. Don't know if I've got a coat of paint in me tonight or not. I don't feel like trying to sleep yet, but my next step is either putting poly on the inside of the chest or painting for another hour and a half.
Maybe I'll have some pics, but I don't know with how the site has been acting tonight. Worked straight away for the first time since evening yesterday sometime, so maybe we're back up?

I think a LOT of people who used to post here over the years stopped posting because their computer died or they changed computers and forgot their password after most of the functionality of the website broke down.
If you don't have it, you can email haken at the address he's given according to Ted, and hopefully he could get you back into the site.
But this is one less thing you have to worry about if you get it done.
I'm going to give you some info on how to do it, but I need to know for sure what your browser is. You have Google Chrome, correct?
I don't have much experience at all with that browser, but I should be able to walk you through it.
If it's anything like Firefox, you should be able to open your own personal "Passwords" screen and see all the passwords Chrome saved at your direction. The usernames will be visible, but the passwords will likely be only dots or astericks until you hit the "eye" icon next to them to make them visible. If it's like Firefox, there would be a "Copy" button right next to it too, so you could copy it and then paste it into a word document or text document.
This is kind of complex stuff, but nothing that you should get into any trouble with. But I think it's important because if you don't back up at least your passwords, if your computer fails on you, you're locked out of everything.
If you'd like, you can let me know a good time to meet here tomorrow night and maybe we'll just go back into the thread I made for you and we could communicate much more quickly than if we were playing it by ear like usual. I won't be able to see your screen but hopefully I could walk you through this stuff fairly easily that way.

While that scare is still in your mind, I think we should get you backed up proper so you can feel much better knowing if your computer crashes you still have everything that is important to you.
In the meantime, if you could get yourself something affordable as far as laptops go, that would be a great way for me to teach you how to do some of this stuff too. We could get your browser on the laptop, then take the backed up settings and passwords that we will back up on your thumbstick, and import them into your browser on your laptop. Then you can log right into here on your laptop the same way you do your desktop.
Trust me. It's all pretty simple. You've got to let go of some of that fear. I was messing with these things back in the day when everything was a terror and I would regularly have to reinstall windows at least twice if not three or four times every year because the old versions didn't fix themselves when they got messed up like Windows 10 and 11 got really good at doing most of the time.

Getting early and I'm still at it.
I still have to paint the bottom shelf area out of 4 and the sides/back. I'm going to go ahead and hit the backs of the linen closet bifold door since it's had plenty of time for that first coat to dry, and I'll also paint the 4 pieces of trim that I cut to frame out the bottom of the doors to hide the fact one door is about 3/8" shorter than the other. Getting real close on that now.
Bookcase is going to need 3 coats for sure. 2 coats tomorrow should be a breeze, along with any other final paint I might need to do on those doors before putting them up. Hopefully I get to putting poly inside the box tomorrow too.

Two things accomplished yesterday (if I'm not counting sll the usual chores)
Hubby had an ablation this AM, and all went well
Dear daughter and I got all the stuff out for St Vincent de Paul for today.
So over the past couple of months that's hazardous waste, a couple of boxes of e-waste, 10+ boxes of giveaway stuff, a couple of big trashbags of trash and a couple of binsful of recycling. I have a few large waste items to get rid of and a bunch more other stuff to give away or sell, and some of my own messes to clean up. It's a work in progress, but at least progress is being made.
I still have big stuff to either repair or get rid of. But that's $$ stuff that hubby will probably resist, like a really uncomfortable recliner and speakers that we can't appreciate (given our hearing) and don't have the amplifier for bc our 40-year old one gave up the ghost.

BRENDA, it's a good thing SIX knows so much about computers. You can rely on his advice. But it's also good to go online. You'll get contradictory info, but over time you'll become more familiar with the items and terminology. Keep at it. Well, not quite all done for today. Have to cancel my trip to Alberta because of a strike. Can't afford to get stuck out there.

So, double ugh! Have to another restart because I locked the taskbar again. No lost icons but clock and weather froze. Need clock.

BRENDA, it's a good thing SIX knows so much about computers. You can rely on his advice. But it's also good to go online. Two more large bins of crap out of my house today. I've pretty much run out of stuff to throw out now though unless I actively do more dehoarding. There's nothing left in the basement that isn't current projects, power tools, paint or some chemical that shouldn't be stored outside, tools I need for projects I'll be doing soon and just a good set of standard tools that you should always have in the house.

Does he use the recliner? That's going to be a tough sell if he actually uses it. If he doesn't push hard on it.
I wonder if those speakers are even worth money anymore. I have had a nice set up in my attic for at least 10 years now. I just had no desire to have cables all over the places to those wires when a decent soundbar I got on sale for around $40 does the job for me.
I think I mentioned before that I'm going to bring all of that stuff down and eventually I'm going to install it in the garage. Probably just leave it all here when I sell the house, honestly.
Haven't done anything today after being up all night working last night. I ended up putting 2 coats on the doors and the bookcase. Doors are ready to start putting hinges on and probably only a day away from being finished when I get back to them. Bookcase needs 1 more coat of paint.
I might get to some of that today if I feel it.

Everything I was working on is finished except for the chest for my aunt.
Just finished hanging those doors, and it took me about 4 hours.
What a nightmare. Could have made it way easier on myself if I had swapped the doors so the naturally shorter one was on the left side, but I didn't realize that until after everything was done and there was no reversing it. You've got enough adjustments in a new kit to make it work eventually through a ton of trial and error.
3 coats of poly on the inside of my aunt's chest. I also drilled the holes for the new handles and did a dry fit. They're going to look AWESOME. I think for now 3 coats might be all I do inside. Looks fantastic. I can always go back and do more later, but I wanted the stain and a good 3 coats of poly down there before I sand the lips again and stain them along with the outside with the different color. I'm hoping to get a nice crisp line on the color change, and if I get stain on the water based poly it should wipe right off. The outside though? We're talking probably 6 coats. I want that to shine like a bowling ball.
Except for the bathroom, the basement is spotless now. Nothing but a plastic tarp and two empty horses in the overlook room.
I'll probably have a good deal of pictures later. I'll try to keep it to the best ones though since I'm about 3 days behind on photos now. Tons of stuff got done.

Picture Time.
First is easy stuff that I finally got around to. Like cleaning those gross shades. Like I said, I got the burn marks off the bad one, but then I realized it was clear and the other two were nicotine stain yellow.
And now that the kitchen is all clean, I figured I'd snap an after shot for one of the before pics I put up last week.
And the finished bookcase...
I put some caulk on it where it needed it. Obviously not a pro job with that top left hack job, but I know the thing is built like a tank and you can hardly notice it. All that's left is putting down contact paper on the surfaces when I've given it a few days to cure.

I had to add length to the right door, so I used the smallest part of a piece of window/door trim since it was the perfect height to cap off the ends, then I put my trim on that. For the door that was the right size, I just put the trim flush with the bottom.

I'm REALLY having fun with that chest.
I've actually never restored a piece of furniture from start to finish, even though that's what my mom and step-dad did after they retired. Whenever I did go over there and worked, I was either the sanding grunt, or I was gluing and clamping pieces that had broke but could be repaired. I don't blame him. The money is in the finish, and he had a spray booth that would have that box finished in no time with a perfectly even sheen and no brush marks at all.
I had a chat with Google AI about the best way to go about doing a lot of the stuff here. Made sure to go with water poly inside and out. At first it said to use the wipe on poly I had inside because it would be much easier to use than brushing on the water based poly, but I had asked it if there would be any problems with that if somebody stored clothes or linens in there and it then said to use the water based stuff to lock everything in so the smells and oils won't contaminate the clothes.
It recommended starting with the inside first since I was doing two colors. I'm glad that I did. I know for sure I have to spend a lot more time sanding the outside smooth. I thought I was thourough, but I know I wasn't. Just a week ago I was really feeling under the gun with all the projects that I took on all at once and I didn't give this piece the time it deserved. I like how that looks on the inside though, along with that black gunk and other abuses and imperfections it had from just being like 100 years old. Stuff that I could have removed with another 4 hours of sanding if I wanted to. When she opens it up, she can remember where it came from. But on the outside? I want that stain to look perfect and I want to get a gloss so high on that it looks like a brand new bowling ball.
Too bad pieces like this don't just fall in your lap all the time. I could probably make what I need to keep my health insurance just doing 1 or 2 pieces like this every month.

It's great to see the results of all that work! I remember you deciding what to use for that opening in the kitchen to the lower level. For the longest time I had no idea what you were talking about. It was an architectural feature I've never heard of.
Bifold doors. Closet renovation. New trim. HORRIBLE wallpaper and paint job gone! Restored flooring. Nice, nicely proportioned furniture and beautiful light fixtures. New kitchen floor. Plus the stuff we can't see: Major repairs. Repaired sump drain pipe. Improved grading. New windows. Hole in floor fixed.
It used to be dark, busy, almost oppressive. Now it's light and calm and classy.

Yeah... I learned a lot doing all of it along the way. I tended not to want much to do with actual finish work outside of painting when doing this stuff with other people over the years. I always liked doing the demolition because nobody I ever worked with was going to complain about my speed doing that. So I either had to draw from memory of seeing other people finishing stuff or rely on YouTube University.
The really cool part is just how little I've actually paid in cash to get all this work done. Not going to claim it was anything close to free overall. I've probably spent $600 on paint alone. But that 2/3 bathroom remodel was only about $50 so far (I did have things like new knobs and the paint purchased back when the kitchen was done years ago).
The kitchen is all original outside of the new flooring which I got on the cheap because they had a "remenant" that was big enough to do the kitchen floor and both the coat closet and pantry with more to spare. That was something like $89 instead of over $125. And those poles for the overlook were BEEFY oak coat closet hangers that are about double the width of any of my actual closet poles. Normally $22 each but I got them on sale for $10 each. So probably add about $300 for paint and another $100 for caulk, knobs and hinges and the hinge jig. (I did have to buy that drill press and the forstner bit set for the overlook, but I generally don't count the purchase of tools as a cost of a job unless they were single use or rentals... but technically that was another $75 or so).
And all the trim in the house basically was free after the clearance prices and me taking out that new card to pay with it that gave me $250 signup bonus for spending $1,000 in 90 days (I used that as an excuse to load up on stuff I know I would be using eventually).
So far, that kitchen remodel was probably $600 and the bathroom was about $50.
I would like to get a nice jet black countertop to replace that awful Menard's special that's sitting on top of them now though. It's why I haven't caulked any of that to the wall yet.

Don't slow your typing down because you're worried about your hands shaking. I really don't think you did anything wrong and most of this was coincidental, based off of your descriptions.
Windows really does need somewhat regular restarts, and I've gleaned from our conversations in the past that you hardly ever give it a proper restart and it's usually just in sleep mode when you're not using it.
I would try to make it a habit on the 1st of every month to do a restart on your computer and you shouldn't run into issues like this anymore. This might just have happened because you've been running that computer since the monitor situation without ever giving it a proper restart.
And the best part is when you finally get around to upgrading the computer it's almost certainly going to have an SSD hard drive which is lightning fast compared to the cheaper/older mechanical hard drives. We're talking like 30 to 60 second restart times instead of 5 or 6 minutes.
Yeah... Get yourself a laptop when you can and we'll get everything you use on there too so you'll have a legit backup and way to get online so we can troubleshoot the other computer. I bought my laptop about 6 years ago, and except for offloading some of my project work onto it a few months ago, I've only ever fired the thing up 2 or 3 times since I got it. But it's always there in case of an emergency.

ULTRA BRIGHT WHITE PAINT MY ASS!!!
Instead of opening one of my 3 unopened cans of flat white paint I've been using for all the ceilings and some closet walls, I spotted a half gallon of ultra bright white flat Behr paint that I got from my buddy.
It went on white, that's for sure. You can see that in the photos below (or more accurately, you can't see anything). I thought the problem was solved. But after I snapped some pictures and got them ready to post I went back in and it all dried freakin' BEIGE!!!
Dammit.
The inside of the can looked good, but some of that rust on the outside along the rim must have gotten into the paint at some point. Not enough for me to notice it when it was in the can.
Throwing that shit paint out. I guess I've got to bite the bullet and open a brand new gallon of paint just to do about 10 touch ups. Stupid. Oh well... I remember getting the flat on an insane rebate sail for only $8 each years back. Wish I bought more of the high-gloss stuff since that was only like $15 at the time of that sale and now goes for about $35 when it's not on sale. But I've got 1.5 gallons left and that should probably get me through most everything left to do in the house when I get to it all, I would think.
This just pisses me off, especially since I used up all the rest of my flat paint last week and would have easily had enough left on my brush and the bottom of that can to do what I need to do now.
Anywho.... Here's a better look at the closet, and the little trap door I need to start work on soon.

Oh... and that hole definitely was cut out to hide something. There's literally nothing under there. I am very intimate with that hole since, if you don't remember, that's the hole I literally fell through and put my foot right through the basement ceiling when I was taking a video of work to show my mom. My gonads hurt me for a week after that and I was pretty worried I ripped something and gave myself a hernia.
It's about 3 feet away from the tub, and there is nothing there at all. No plumbing, no electric, nada...
I wonder what they were hiding in there?
It was all carpeted over like everything else and it was covered with some nasty plywood.
I've got some scraps from a nice hardwood floor still out in my garage for this very project. I ended up using most of them as faces and support beams on all those shelves I built for the garage, but I've got plenty left to do this. I think what I'm going to do is notch out enough on both the floor and the top that I create so I can lay hinges in there backwards, flat and flush with the surface. Maybe put a little hole in the front of it for you to put your finger in there and lift it.
It would never be a good place to really hide anything unless somebody carpeted the entire upstairs again, including the closets, but what a fun little thing for a kid to have in their closet one day.
I haven't come up with a solid plan yet, but I've got a vision. I need to make sure that I build a proper base in there that will take any and all weight of anything you put in there off of the basement ceiling drywall first, then I want to build some nice walls for it to so everything is safe and looks great.

It occurred to me as I was hanging that door that I never painted that header beam in the closet. And until looking at it right now in the pics, I already forgot about it.
Now I wont' feel so bad about opening up the flat paint for touch ups. I'll hit that with a few coats as well and skip primer. Then when it dries I'll make it shiny like everything else.

Now here's a cool thing I can point out that I didn't realize until now.
I know I've talked about the crazy walls in my house and how at one point I was convinced that they had plastered about 3/4" walls on top of drywall and couldn't wrap my head around that. All the stuff I tore out in the basement was drywall, but any original walls in the house on the top 2 floors were done this way.
And that closet was an addition at some point. There was a point in time where that bedroom was quite a bit larger and people used wardrobes if they didn't have closets.
I know all of this for a fact because the light switch for the bedroom used to be outside of the bedroom, on the left side of the stairs to the attic. So at some point they made the bedroom a little smaller to keep access to the attic outside of that bedroom and made the closet to make the loss of space make sense. And this totally explains why I have an empty door frame before getting to the small bedroom or the attic door.
But they didn't move the electric into the room. It's one of the things I was doing way back when I'd BS with Wishy and JO every night. I don't think I'd have it in me to do all that work again today, but I was pretty proud of that job and the fact it was all done with hard pipe was insane.
So this cool shot here shows that they just eliminated most of the wall that used to be there to make that closet. Or maybe they did have a small closet in there across from the steps to the attic when it was all in the same room?
If that's the case, they opened it up much wider for bifolds.
Either way, that spot right there is the only remaining place where you can currently tell how these walls were actually done.
I learned just a little while ago on some random youtube video that popped up in my feed that this is the way they were temporarily doing things before the complete transition to drywall. It was a lot easier and cheaper to do it this way than to pay the really skilled artists that would plaster over wood lathe like all the walls in my Grams house were.

Heh... I knew that was going to happen.
I've got to put at least 2 coats of my good white paint on to cover up the bad paint I used for the original touchups. What a dummy. I honestly couldn't see the difference without the lights on, but they were in the pictures I snapped when the paint was still wet. All I had to do was put some lights on instead of going by the limited light from the cloudy day.
Oh well. I'm getting all that header done too, and that's probably going to need 3 coats since I didn't put primer on it.
I look at how nice I made that header in the master bedroom and I'm kind of mad at myself for not doing that in the small bedroom too before putting those doors up. Oh well. I'll just camouflage it now. No big deal...
Sun will be going down soon and I've done nothing much but procratinate all day. Hopefully I'll get something else done besides just that.
I've got some nice cardboard I'm going to cut to size for the large bedroom closet so I can start getting some stuff in there. There's a perfect spot in there for my good guitar, so that's where it's going. I'm just going to make sure to put a hand towel between the back of the case and the wall so I don't have more walls to touch up down the road.

Funny story about today when I was doing the 2nd/3rd coats on those touch ups and AFTER I told you the difference in the walls.
I mentioned it was super cloudy today, and in the afternoon when the sun is on the exact opposite side of the house, apparently there are some weird color effects when coupled with my LED flashlight...
I noticed on the wall with the blue that there were areas that I hadn't touched up yet. Of course I haven't because I don't have any of that blue paint at the moment to do those touchups...
But I didn't see the blue, and both walls looked to me like they were the same color and I just did it.
Two seconds later I realized what I just did and I ran to the bathroom and got some baby wipes and fortunately was able to get all that white paint off my damn blue/grey wall.

Nothing to really make pics about, but got a lot done today/tonight.
I got all those touch ups finished in the closet and 3 coats of white paint on everything that wasn't white on the header of the small bedroom closet. It's not perfect like the other two hung doors are, but it's so hidden with that trim I lowered below the opening and just about the height of the track you can't hardly see it when the closet is closed unless you're right up under it. And now when it's open all you see is white even if things aren't capped and cornered off like I did it everywhere else. I might snap some pics of that tomorrow.
I discovered my estimation of boxes in my attic was high and I only have 20 left that haven't been brought down.
The worst news is I have two obscenely large totes of all of those ancient black and white photos that I never went through with my Grams. I swore my Aunt took all that, but now I remember when I said I had photos she was only interested in those of her parents and siblings and pics when me and my brothers and cousins were growing up. She had no interest in storing these two huge things in her little apartment.
I'm at a place in my life where I just can't. The health issues these last few years is making me rethink a lot of stuff, and me holding onto this stuff when it seems nobody else in my family gives a rat's ass just seems foolish. I know they're not worth anything monetarily, and I am just about 100% sure that there is not a single person in any of those pictures that I've ever met in my life. Even babies.
I really think I'm going to put out one last call to the family and see if anybody wants to take those off of my hands. I'm certainly not getting rid of everything I had in boxes, but where those things seemed so important to me 3 years ago, I just don't have that feeling about them anymore today. I will quickly go through them though and see if there are any pictures that speak to me. I don't have to get rid of all of them, and there might be some I feel are worth setting aside.
Oh... and I've spent about 5 hours sanding that chest by hand, literally. No tools, just folded up sandpaper and my fingers. It really needed it. You could feel with your hands the imperfections from the power sanders. I started at an 80 grit and went to 100, 150 and then 220. And I had to do this twice. And even after wiping that down and getting the tiny wood dust out of the grain, I'd feel it again and still feel the imperfections, so I kept wiping it down and hitting it again with 220 grit paper until I couldn't feel anymore of those after a wipedown.
If this doesn't take my stain the way I want it to, I really don't know what else I could have done. The damn box looks shiny on the outside now and there's not any product on it yet.
I also got my knockoff dremmel tool out and cleaned off all the rust on the screws on the bottom of the chest that were too deep for my power sanders to clean.
It's all ready to go and it's really late in the morning, but I'm just taking a break now before I stain it. This is exciting. The moment of truth.

If I wasn't painting int the dark, I would have noticed this sooner. My eyes couldn't tell the difference when it was still wet, but the camera already could.

SIX, I did clear out that little notification area in the right corner at the bottom. And it was a notification about no threats. Also I wonder about taking a chance on reupping my anti-virus. It's a free thing that was already installed on the drive when I got it.

How does that work with the shakiness, Brenda? Does it come and go? Does weather impact it? I don't remember you talking about it too much before. My mom's MS comes and goes. I could see her one day and it's like she never got it, but I could see her 3 months later and she can't hardly get out of the couch on her own and she takes small steps to get everywhere. Humidity is really bad for her, which is why I was really mad when they upped and moved from Arizona (one of if not the driest state in the country, to the most humid).
The notifications for no threats is normal. That's the built-in Windows Defender.
Normally I would have told you not to bother with anti-virus software because Windows Defender is good, but I'm pretty sure we're not getting updates on our Windows 10 security anymore (since October of last year).
Adding antivirus is easy. Which one did your computer have before?

Okay... We are not going with another coat of stain.
What a waste of time. I decided to just try it on the bottom of the box and it hardly darkened the color at all. If it even did, I can't tell. But I've got to wait 2 hours before I can put poly on now while that dries.
I was thinking about putting contact paper on the bookcase, but I read that I should be waiting at least 14 to 30 days before doing that. I know I waited a long time on the kitchen cabs before doing it, but I didn't remember waiting that long. I must have though because I wouldn't have put it on without checking first.
I think I'll spackle all the brad nail holes for the 3 long pieces of mid-level trim in the basement and all those corner pieces I fleshed out the stairwell with. It will be nice to get that done and sanded down and cleaned up. Needs a little caulk too, but I always do the spackle first.
I will be putting something like 6 coats of poly on the outside of the box, and they need at least 2 hours drying time in between scuff sands and a new application. I won't be starting poly today until 6PM at least, so it's going to be another long night.
I keep going the way I'm going, I'm going to force myself to do dehoarding just from lack of stuff I can still do without doing a proper sump operation that will leave me virtually free of water issues if done right. I can't be doing anything more in the basement that hasn't been done until that's finished. I really never should have finished most of that room in the basement, but through some blood sweat and tears over the years I've managed to save the work so far.
I'm hoping once summer winds down I can get my buddy out here for a few days on the weekends or something. There's just certain things like this that I feel much better doing when he's around, like back when we jacked up my porch and fixed the flooring from underneath. I spent about 80 hours working on things in between his visits. He was probably only here 10 hours in 3 days, but we didn't waste a minute of that time.
I should probably get down there soon and figure out how I want to run my electric so both pumps are on different circuits. I know I'm stuck with the one as it is without doing a ton of work, and it's never been a problem with what it shares the circuit with such as my microwave. But I can't add a 2nd pump to that. When I open the wall by the breaker box to do the work for the generator plug outside the house, I will be checking to see if the 2 foot electrical conduit nub with capped off wires is it's own circuit straight from that box that was terminated for some reason. If that's the case it will make my work a LOT easier. Won't know until I put some huge holes in the one room in the basement that has all the walls finished.

Change of plans...
Had me another little chat with Google AI, and it seems that the best path forward now is to use Super Glue to seal in all those screws on the bottom before I add my water based poly. Glad I asked that question before I got started.
I thought I was ready for the first coat and figured I'd burn time getting a few more pics ready, which I did. But I got sidetracked into that conversation about the screws and now it's time to start the poly and I'm going to have to do the super glue thing and wait about 30 minutes before starting it.
Got as much rust off the screwtops on the bottom of the box with my dremmel as I could.
5 additional hours sanding by hand.
And our stain...
The poly is transformative. I have to keep that in mind when looking at this. It's not the result that I expected, even after trying a 2nd coat, but it's not bad. I can tell that's going to match her furniture, and if you look at the parts where I filled it in with wood filler and it really took the color, it's going to be damn near a perfect match. I was just a little disappointed at how much brown still shows through. I'm sure I could have done something different to change that, but I don't know enough about what I'm doing to know what that would have been.
But I'm telling you though... If I really put 5 or 6 coats of poly on this thing it's going to look amazing regardless.

You have any ideas of what I could do to keep this thing elevated off the floor?
It's going to take about a month to cure and where it's going is on top of a really nice carpet.
If it were me, I'd just throw some 2x4 scraps under either side and call it a day, but my aunt isn't going to go for that on her carpet.
I'm almost wondering if I need to send her pictures on her retirement day and let her know it will be ready to use next month. Because otherwise she's going to be tripping over it in her kitchen or bathroom because there's nowhere else that isn't covered in very nice looking carpet.

Super Glue actually went quick and easy. Great tip by Google AI to use toothpicks to spread it around on the screws that only needed a little bit, and to keep it from balling up on you, especially in the deeper holes. I was worried I wouldn't have enough with 4 cheap tubes from Menards that are 3/4 full of air and only one tiny real Super Glue brand from the dollar tree. I only needed one.
Give that about 30 more minutes and I'll start the poly on the outside.

I found the little radio thing I got when Grams was passing so I could put a bunch of music she would have grown up with and have that playing in the background. I should get that thing charged up and get my music on an SD card so I can play that down in the basement.
I was listening to Jaynez's Pink Floyd video from the Music II thread while I was down there last night, but it was coming from upstairs and I just really couldn't hear it good over the sanding. I think I'm going to go do that now while I'm waiting for the super glue to dry. If I don't have a spare SD card I can find easily, I'll make sure to copy all those songs to my backups folders before putting my stuff on them.

Since I want to get 6 coats on this thing, I'm trying to speed it up a little bit. I have a pretty low-key chepo fan I got for a few bucks after rebate that turned out not to be really worth much but it's probably perfect for this. I've cleaned up the basement real good and the sanding was all done in the other room, but I just don't want any of my high powered fans kicking up everything while I'm trying to speed this along.
I've decided that the bottom of the box is going to have at least one if not two of those coats skipped since I have a good amount pooling in those screw holes despite the superglue going in there first to provide a barrier from the water/rust. At the end of the day I don't really care if it only gets 2 coats, but I will try for 3.
I still have a bunch of rubber feet that I bought for the front stairs of the patio whenever I get around to building the back section. I used them on the front step that I remade years ago becuase it was completely rotted out and unsafe, and these rubber feet have ensured that the rot never sets in, but the paint job on the bottom sides of all 6 legs is still good.
I had just enough left to do the back, but I guess I'll just have to buy more whenever I get around to it. I think I'm going to use 4 of them in the corners to get this thing off the ground. That hopefully would get it high enough off the ground where the carpet isn't coming into contact with it while it's curing. It won't be easy to drag around though, so she'd want to find a more permanent place for it.
I always thought if I did it right it would look great sitting right under a foyer table that I measured years ago and knew was wide enough to fit this. I'm not sure if it would slide in and out safely with the handles, but if I've got those feet they could still just be put under there pretty much for keeps one time and the handles would just be in between the front and back legs on either side and you'd have to be careful if ever you did move it from under the table.
Unless I'm up past 8AM, I'm not getting all the coats on tonight, but I'll probably have some pictures of the progress. I already have pics of the first coat and they look great, but I'll probably wait to show anything until at least 3 coats are on it like I've already got inside.
It's just too bad I couldn't do the lips at the same time and I'm going to have all this stupid drying time just for them at the end. Oh well... Next time I'll have painters triangles and hopefully 2 giant work benches free to do this stuff on.
Got my Gram's music from the 30's through the 50's all backed up and in the process of putting my music on the card. Slow as hell with the cheapo thumb drive I bought that has about 7 different slots for different things. It's handy as hell on the rare occasion you need it, but I didn't realize it was only USB2.0 and I'm stuck with about 1.5mbps speeds.
I'm not even sure the radio actually works anymore, actually. Got it plugged in now and haven't gone back to look at it for about an hour. Just plugging it in the wall did not give it the juice it needed to power on, so hopefully it starts now. Bummer if it doesn't. My buddy bought the same one before me years back and he still uses it all the time today. I've only used the thing 1 time for about a week and it's been in storage ever since.

Coat two is on and drying. It's much quicker than 2 hours with that little fan on everything. I was able to get to scuff sanding it a lot earlier than I thought I would. Still no way I'm going to get 6 coats done tonight.
I wasted away the daylight hours so I'm not going to be putting spackle up in the dark and that will have to wait. I might bring some more stuff down into the small bedroom. I'm going to need a monitor for the work I'm doing, and some of it requires old composite cables, so fortunately I didn't throw away the small TV my old man gave me to throw away that's got them, or I'd be taking a TV from somewhere I don't want to be moving them.
I'm also going to test out a piece of old tech I have sitting on the TV stand that's no longer needed there to see if it even still works before I move it up in the bedroom. Gotta make room for that Atari. Still don't know if it works or if that adapter my brother had in there is going to do the trick for me, but I'm dying to find out.
So mad that I have to wait 30 days to put that contact paper on the bookcase. A lot of decisions about my stored books and knickknacks and what I'm keeping and giving away is dependent on what fits on that thing. Oh well... There are other projects to do and other things I need to dehoard over the next 27 or so days.

Hey, SIX. Both my family doc and the neurologist basically say the shakiness comes from doing to many heavy things. Before I moved here I had two or three nasty falls and landed on my hands hard. It's taken till now for those falls to show up in my hands. The shakiness does come and go. Sometimes they don't shake at all and because of carrying to much heavy stuff on Friday and Saturday. Yeah, not good. Taking it easy today has made a difference.
It is Malware anti-virus. It's spelt weird but like I said it is a free thing and I get the pop-ups to redo it every so often. But with all this weird stuff, I haven't bothered with it.

I emailed my friend about my cancelled trip. She answered that and then later the same day she sent me another one. Her husband's cancer has come back. He has an appointment on Tuesday to find out when he starts radiation treatments then it will be another course of chemo.

Oh okay. I know you can't watch movies with flashes and thought that maybe it was all related. Still not good, but probably better that it's physical rather than neurological. Do they recommend you to do any sort of exercises that could help. Light stuff even as light as daily stretches that might relieve some tension build up?

Just click on the button that says "Free Antivirus Download". It will show up in your browser's download when it's completed. You just run that and let it do all the default setups and say "I agree" and "OK" all the way through. The defaults would be all that you need.
But you don't do any financial stuff on your computer at all, right? If you're not tied into that world at all, you probably don't have to bother. And I don't imagine you're doing much online that's putting you into places where you could get yourself into virus trouble anyhow.

I got my brother's Atari working.
That little adapter he bought worked perfectly.
The bad news is the controllers are bad though, because of course they are. That's why the system failed and those controllers were notorious for that. This is my fault though because I stored them away for maybe a decade in just about the worst spot possible. How many summers has it been baking up there in the humidity?
All's not lost though. The strange thing is that the sticks on both of them still work. That's usually the part that goes. The start/reset/pause buttons on the top work. But none of the buttons on the sides of either controller are working though. I might be able to open them up and clean the insides of any residue and gunk and get them working nice again. I'm sure there's YouTube videos on how to do it.
Worst case scenario would be buying new ones. I doubt I'd find anything original that still works that wouldn't require me to take a mortgage out on my house, but that oldschool video game community is pretty huge and they make all sorts of things like replacement controllers and even brand new games that they're making nearly 50 years after the systems came out.
They're not cheap though. They can't mass produce them because the market is so small.
Hopefully they clean up and work. The fact that the sticks are working, even if they are a little tight, is a good sign.
One complaint though... No Pac-Man??? Where's Pac-Man??? It's the most common game and it came with the console. I could have been playing that right now without the need for the buttons!!!!!

Not as expensive as I would have thought to replace those controllers actually. Still far out of any amount I'm willing to spend on that right now. Look to be about $50 to $75 for one that's guaranteed to work, and some guy will supposedly fix them for you for $40, but seems really cheap in 2026 to me unless they're from a different country where the USD goes a lot further than it does here.
Unfortunately, unlike nearly any other system ever made, you can't just buy a cheap USB adapter and use modern controllers on it. It had a unique 15 pin connector vs. the 9 pin connector that most other consoles were using (Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Sega Genesis... yes... you could use a genesis controller on the two other atari systems and vice versa). Nintendo was 9 pin too, but they molded the plugs different so you couldn't change them up. The Atari 5200 though had analog controls and a potentiometer inside which varied the voltage in ways modern digital controllers won't handle, and it also had the 4x4 phone keypad that makes it twice as hard to do. People have figured out how to do it by cobbling a bunch of dongles and wires together, but that's going to run you $300 if you never want to worry about a controller dying on you again.
Maybe I get lucky and they clean up well.
It's at least a cool conversation piece as is right now. The system, games and controllers all look fantastic without hardly a blemish on them. Shame if I can't get it working soon, but it's not wasting space anymore than the other thing I took out already was, and this looks a lot cooler.
Getting tired and getting tired of waiting for that 2nd layer to dry enough to move on. That first coat seemed to dry so quick, but this is still tacky in some spots. I might just let it go until tomorrow. Shouldn't have a problem doing 4 coats in one day now that everything is already moving.

I think I must have gone thicker on that 2nd coat or something with how long it took to dry.
I'm really getting a feel for the wood now. I don't know whether it's the brush I'm using, the fact that this is an old half can of poly that I can't even be sure I bought myself, chemicals that may have still been in the wood or what, but I've been getting bubbles popping up from the very beginning when putting poly on the inside. I didn't shake the can... it's stirred... so that's not the problem. It's not everywhere, but only certain spots. I realized that this is anywhere there were bigger imperfections in the grain that also sucked up more stain, as well as around the corners of the piece. As I rubbed my brush across these areas the bubbles would just pop right up on the surface. I assume this must be some sort of displacement of tiny little pockets of air getting trapped in the grain as I swipe.
So, at least for the first 2 coats anyhow, I haven't actually been sanding down enough before putting a new coat on. After my 2nd coat, I wasn't happy with how the light shined on the piece as you moved your head so you could see the light bounce off of it. But the funny thing is that after spending about an hour sanding it all down real good with 220 grit paper, even though a lot of the high spots are greyed out a bit and I haven't yet dusted it off for poly, the shine is good and runs smoothly from end to end now.
While I sanded with one hand this time, I was also going back over the whole thing with my fingertips of my other hand to feel how smooth it had gotten. If I felt even the tiniest hint of braille, the sanding wasn't done in that spot.
It's late, but if I'm as happy with how the 3rd coat looks as I think I might be, I'll take the time to post a pic of it. The 2nd coat looked good, but I'm really hoping after all this sanding between the coats this time it really shines.

We're only 3 coats into it and you can already see stuff from the ground reflecting off the left side of the box like a foggy mirror.
I'm doing 5 or 6 coats, depending on how far the rest of that poly gets me. I didn't think that I would, but I'll probably get 6 with more to spare now. That 3rd coat went on easy compared to the first two after that sanding job. I just have to make sure I leave enough for the lips when I finally getting to turning these things back over again. 24 hours after whenever I put the final coat on.

How about faux feet? Four, or maybe six blocks of decent-looking wood to hold the chest up off the carpet while it cures. They don't have to be attached, all they need to do is sort of match the style and color of the chest. Here are a few possibilities of the kind of shapes you could create...

Thanks Sigs. I didn't know they had so many options. I had rubber feet I used for my front porch step when I had to make a new one since the old one was hollowed out by ants after the wood rot set in. I was going to use those, but that would leave me short when I did the back steps. I'll see if Amazon has a cheap 4 pack that would look good. I think the black ones that you posted first would look great with the black handles and hinges. Not that you'd see much of them under the box and in the carpet.

I wasn't planning on being up yet, but I've been dealing with a LOT OF NOISE outside.
I was hearing chainsaws and they sounded close, but that was going on for a while and the whole time I could see part of my neighbors tree out my window and figured that was too good to be true.
Somehow I managed to maybe grab 20 minutes of sleep in between, and when I opened my eyes again I could no longer see all the branches that I usually do from my couch.
Holy shit! They're actually cutting it down!
I'm wondering if somebody saw me outside after the storm last Monday snapping a bunch of pictures of the tree and they went out and saw that 50 foot limb snapped off and just waiting to fall on my house with the right wind.
Looks like it's just a big pole now.
If I thought I wasn't getting any sleep earlier, I think things are going to start getting LOUD. At least if they're using the same guys I did who charged half price but didn't give a shit about your lawn. Good for them and for me that our area between our houses is all Moled out and half weeds, so who cares?
Just mind the house, please.

But you don't do any financial stuff on your computer at all, right? If you're not tied into that world at all, you probably don't have to bother. And I don't imagine you're doing much online that's putting you into places where you could get yourself into virus trouble anyhow.

Perfectly reasonable to think it could be tied to my seizures. But I'm just glad that it isn't. That would make life really hard. Nobody has recommended stretches or but I do little things like stretch my hands out and stretch my arms up over my head. Doing that sometimes my wrists will crack.

I'd be bringing Cheap back. If I could learn how to make dovetails like that, I could construct boxes like this in way less time than it takes to strip and sand it all down first. I could probably charge people $1,200 to $1,500 for a coffin that looks really nice, but doesn't have all the "frills".
The rich people can still have their fancy coffins. But people like me who plan on digging a hole in the backyard and putting a sign up asking for somebody to finish the job when I go to sleep the last time should be thrilled about it. They charged over $2,000 for the piece of plastic resin crap they put my grandma's and uncle's urns in. My coffin would be cheaper than most headstones.

She had a neurological problem, but I don't remember what it was. Most of the time she was fine, but then her hands would start shaking.
I remember she drank coffee, but I don't remember how. I'm sure at that point she had some sort of "system" to do things like that just in case an episode happened as she was drinking the hot coffee.

Honestly, Brenda, I'd just skip it and not worry about it. If you ever do break down or we are all forced to start doing all of our banking and bill paying online, you would want to get a new computer that could run Windows 11 to be truly safe anyway.
The only thing you likely have on your computer that anybody would ever be interested in is your book, and that's not what the criminals are looking for. They're looking for a quick and easy payday through access to all your passwords to your bank and cards. As long as you're doing all of that the old way, no worries.

I was just looking at the box and really tempted to leave it at 3 coats, but there are a few spots I don't like on the front of the body, and if I'm going to do that I might as well at least do one more coat everywhere. I'll probably let that dry and then only do whatever panels I feel still need a 5th coat and call it a day.
24 hours after I get that done, I can flip things over and work on the lips. Technically I don't need to put another coat on the bottom and I could flip that over later today, but I wouldn't be able to do that with the top if I'm putting another coat of poly on, so I'll just hit it all now.

Good idea, Sigs. I actually have 3 small blocks of wood that I thought I might have been using for that bifold door but I didn't need. Just need to cut one more off, and maybe I'll shape them all to the same size and even break the edges on my belt sander. We could think of them more like coasters.
I decided against adding those rubber feet. I don't want to screw anything into this, even on that bottom. I think it would be nice for her to be able to drag the nice smooth surface on the carpet at some point too, instead of having big rubber feet on it holding it firmly in place.
Just did what may be the final sand down on the outside of the box. It went very well compared to the last scuff sand which took about an hour. Not including the bottom which I did decide to hit harder this time, the rest of the box probably only had about 5 to 10% of the surface covered in anything that wasn't like glass.
I only want to do one more coat outside now for sure because I want to have enough to do one more inside while I'm doing the lips. It could use a good sand down that it wasn't getting like the outside got, and I think I can make that way smoother inside than it is now with just one more coat after a good sanding.
Did you see that my neighbors finally took care of that tree?
Nothing but a stump left now, and I see the stump grinder parked down the block waiting.

I try not to do that as these are security doors and heavy, so when you let them go they bang some thing fierce.
