Hey, good, a new Serenity Convention thread. Can't believe we've only a month and a week to go!!

So, FFF folks: Are we still planning to have a little pre-event lunch on Friday April 29?
Looks like I'll be returned from Edinburgh (flying into Heathrow) around noon. Should get to the hotel around 1 pm, I'm guessing.

Would love to gather with ya. We've got until 3 pm. until registration starts, don't we?

Also, I've got a twin room reserved, and I'm wondering: Do you think I Thistle will let me squeeze a third person into the hotel room, if somebody needs a place? After all, my daughter isn't an adult yet -- she's a teenager.

Has everyone begun work on their costumes, hmmm?

Hmmm pre-event lunch or breakfast

I think registration is mid afternoon, but with 600+ people all trying to register pay for their bits and pieces (Photo Ops etc.), I`ll go with sandwiches

Not too sure what time the hotels accepts people into their rooms either, likely to have a lot of stuff, so might want to do that before registering if I can.

Really Looking forward to it

Not sure I should say this on a board but sometimes theoretically some people may possibly squeeze the occasional extra person into the room without telling the hotel. I would never do such a thing of course but if I did I would not want my room to be cleaned at all and I would definitely not request more keys than the roomsize. I may possibly find a way into breakfast without talking to the guard at the door

This is all highly theoretical of course and I am sure the other attendees on this board are all saints and would do no such thing, this is just a rumour one hears....

Well, I don`t know where all this sprang from but, I was on about my own stuff.

I think you will find that apart from the hotel not knowing about un-invited guests, it means they will be in-voluntarily breaking fire regulations (even though it won`t be their fault that they don`t know who extra is staying), this would also invalidate any insurance as they are not on the register.

I would hope that people act resposibly, whilst staying.

Maybe we could all meet up in a nearby mcdonalds? Since I guess those who aren't staying at the hotel, can't come in for food.... so if there's any kind of mcdonalds, etc etc nearby, that would be useful. Anybody with any inside knowledge into the area? *looks around*

I am reliably informed there is a McDonalds nearby. A chinese restaurent has also opened nearby, but it's allegedly very expensive. There are a couple of local pubs just down the road that sell food.
Some people have mentioned having pizza delivered, but you have to meet the delivery person down the road and smuggle the boxes into the hotel.

Yes, there's a McDonalds very near the hotel, by the garage. Walk out the hotel, turn right when you get to the top of the car park area, the garage and McDonalds are on the left. If you're going Friday lunch time, you will probably find half the con goers in there for lunch.

Oh, by the way, registration for the hotel rooms opens at 2.00 pm, by which time the queue is usually stretching out of the hotel!

I wonder if the hotel allows early check-in or will store our luggage, because we'll definitely be there quite a bit before 2 pm. Most American hotels allow early check-in with advance notice. Is that never done in England?

I don’t know, BUT, I’m going to call up tonight and ask because I have to be there around 11am I think (dad’s taking me and he has to be back for 1pm) so I need to know. As soon as I’ve asked, I’ll post here and let you know (unless someone else has already asked). If you can’t check in I’m sure they’d at least have some kind of luggage storing room.

Ah. I think you better brace yourself for the standard of service you're going to get in the UK. Remember, the rule of thumb in the UK is "The Customer is a meek sheep who will do what he/she's told". And also, we love queues here. We'd queue all day if we could. So lots of businesses arrange matters so that queues form in the unlikeliest of places where even basic organisation would ensure swift service.

See, being a Yank (and nothing like a sheep) I'm more of a subscriber to "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" approach to achieving customer satisfaction. Naturally I will call the hotel and ask for allowances -- such as a spare kid in the room -- because we Americans feel entitled to do so. That's how we get our money's worth: Ask for special consideration, scrounge for bargains, demand to speak to someone in charge, and always strive for the best deal.

In short, I 'll engage in the sort of behavior that Americans feel they must employ to get decent service in this country. Which just happens to be the same behaviors that make us terribly unpopular in more civilized places like the UK.

But I promise: If the phone call doesn't work, I'll politely queue up and pretend to be British domesticated. I will use my standing-around time to meet my new Browncoat friends, because that's actually part of the fun, isn't it?

P.S. Does anybody else find it difficult to spell "queue?" I look at it, and it never seems right.

Out of the daily amount they charge you for the room a percentage is for breakfast. I'm sure the breakfast is nice, but I know how much of the room cost is going towards breakfast and I feel it is an obscene amount of money. I would rather keep the money and have a cereal bar, or go to McDonalds.

Equally, my group contains children and a diabetic so we can't do the 'have one large meal and then go without' option.

We booked room only, which works out a lot cheaper than B&B.

As far as early check-in, the check-in time is 2.00 pm, but they will put your bags in a room until you are ready to check in.

Lots of children attend cons and there are no restrictions on them. At Fusion the children could join you in a photo for free, but you had to pay £10 for them to have an individual one done.

You are also allowed to push to the front of a queue. However, families only do this if the child is creating a scene and leaving them in the queue would disturb others.

Make sure they have comfortable shoes. I also carry round a bag with snacks, drinks and small toys/books, this helps in the long queues.

Having children at a con is a bonus because the guests will always stop and make a fuss of them. My older daughter got a cuddle from Nathan (was I jealous!) and my youngest a cuddle from Summer.

Finally, just remember they will find a way to totally embaress you infront of the guests (any one remember my youngest daughter sneezing all over Emma Caulfield!)

OMG! Wow!! I got my ticked this morning and read through the whole little leaflet.

And OMG its £10 per each guest for a photo?! WTF!! I was expecting it to be way more expensive...as I've heard at porevious Buffy conventions, you would have to play depending on how "big" the star...like £19 for Kristine Sutherland and like £39 for David Boreanaz.

I'm soo excited. I can afford photos! With all of them! WOW!! *Head does a couple of 360 spins on my neck* Aaaaaaaaaaaahhh!! I just need to make sure I register in time!! Yay!!

They do also say that there is no guarentee that the photos will be signed - demand will most likely be great, but it`s a great way to get a personalised item.

What you have to remember is that Starfury is basically a fan run organisation, albeit a very professionally run one. Photos have always been reasonable at Starfury events.

The ones you have heard of were run on a purely profit making basis and the cost of photos with guests was simply another way of raking the cash in for the organisers.

Starfury prefers to charge less and let the fans get more for their money. Some other reputable organisers also share this policy.

The expensive photo sessions are usually a sign that the whole event is geared up towards making a hefty profit.

I can also vouch for the fact that if the photographer doesn't feel he's got the shot first time, he asks you to wait and takes a second shot just to be sure.

Extremely good value for money and OFTEN returned signed by the actors (though they do not promise this will happen)

don`t know about Rivers head, I`m sure there`s enough stuff in their already without a captains boot or 2 - I`m surprised River didn`t see it coming though

I guess relevant info needs to be said about the con - message posted on Yahoo group about rough con schedule.

Friday - registration (possibly starting in morning - although that`s not confirmed) then 7pm opening ceremony followed by disco & it would appear the meet`n`greet is on at the same time(?)

Saturday 9-12pm Photo Shoots & a random episode in main hall on big screen. also from 11am Q&A with actors 4.30pm-7pm autograph queue then disco & fancy dress competition at 8.30pm

Sunday - similar to Saturday, but apparently group photo shoot on this day & seperates too, with different guest talks & Q&As

so that will help a few - decide what they are gonna do?

I still reckon a trip down into London in Browncoat gear to see Hitchhikers will be a must (even if they don`t show the Serenity Trailer - I`m sure it will probably happen at the con [probably via weblink from somebody in a movie theatre in the US as apparently their release date has been put forward too])

So, who`s up for Hitchhikers Guide? straight after registration and unpacking? haven`t got a cinema in mind so if anybody has got any ideas that will be cool too - and don`t forget to bring your browncoat too

I don't know of any cinemas near the Thistle. If you are going into town to see the movie, you may have problems if registration isn't till after lunch. Plus, you still have to get into your room, which you can't do until 2.00 pm. If you have to go into central London for the movie, don't forget that the underground journey is over an hour, plus you have to get to the airport/tube by waiting for the Hoppa bus. In other words, it's going to take a couple of hours each way just to get to the cinema to see the film, unless there is somewhere in the Hounslow area showing it. You may also want to get photo session tickets which will be on sale once registration has opened.

Those times are unofficial and just a guide that was posted on the Yahoo group, it may not be entirely accurate and of course things can change at last moment.

I`ve done the last little bits to my Browncoat - probably do away with the eye patch though & still looking for some brown boots that will fit my size 11 feet .

I will most likely wear the jacket most of the time unless it gets too warm.

Not too long to go now, It`s been a while since my last fan con. Last one was the Wolf359 convention in the late 1990`s (97?)

There are a group of attendees here in England who are (in)famous at conventions known as the Jedi Chefs. These guys turn up and party hard at every event. They like to sit around in full jedi robes with chefs hats (not even worth me trying to explain!) and many of the celebrity guests at the cons join in are admitted to the ranks of the jedi chefs. At the White Room, Summer, Nathan and Morena all became jedi chefs and posed in a series of pictures complete with lightsabre and chef's hat.

Sean has thrown parties in the past, in part to honour these regular party animal attendees. They have become a fixture at the events and they wouldn't be the same without them. And you know that you only have to look as far as the bar to find them!

I think the nearest cinema to the Thistle is a 10 screen Cineworld in Feltham but i'm not sure of a direct way to get there. There's also a UGC in Hammersmith, which is on the Piccadily line and an Odeon in Richmond.

Anyone feel free to pitch in.

How I understand it is that check-in is at 2pm (which could take a while) then registration at 3pm and a chance to get photo shoot tickets (more queues) and finally openiny ceremony at 7ish along with meet and greet (but don't quote me).

I doubt you can make it to a cinema and back in time for the evenings festivities but hey where there's a will there's a way.

Anything concrete on the itinerary as I'm ashamed to say I'm leaving Sunday morning to get to Colletormania in Milton Keynes (James Marsters and Anthony Stewart Head just can't be passed up) and I'd like to get everything in before I leave.

On that note being a poor loner I was wondering if a meet for lunch was confirmed for those early arrivees (McDonalds fine with me) and if anyone is among the first 170 tickets for the first night party.

Sorry far too many questions and not enough answers (24 days and counting).

Re. leaving on Sunday, you probably won't get everything in before you leave as the auto sessions are split into two groups usually and you do one group on Saturday and the other on Sunday and they usualy run from around 4 pm. You will not be allowed to get all the autos you want because you are leaviing early.

Certain guest photo sessions will only be on the Sunday plus the planned group shot is likel y only to be occurring on Sunday as well.

The talks on stage will also be occurring on sunday too and you won't simply see a repetition of what went on the day before as the pairings on stage are often mixed and matched etc.

Sorry to sound negative but it is a three day event and is geared up to the fact that people will be there for all three days. If you are not, you might have to accept that you cannot get everything done before you leave.

ps. The opening ceremony is highly unlikely to run at around 7 pm as these things often run late. I would think its more likely to be 8 or even 8:30. There is a cinema in Uxbridge. That is only a bus ride from Heathrow airport and you don't have to go into London. If its showing the right film you could get there and back in time.

Wow! My friends think I have been way too fanatical about organising our trip and schedule but reading this thread it seems there are still a million things I have to work out.

We're coming over from Australia and spending a week in London before the con, and we'd love to meet peoples at a lunch of some variety before hand. One question - does Macca's have lean beef burgers in England? (I'm addicted!)

And also squeeee! Does anyone know yet if Tony Head will be at Collectormania on the Monday? (I'm already very grumbley that Alexis will not be. Curse him!)

Ooh - and one more question, coz' you folks seem very knowledgable - we booked our tickets in January, received them in February, but my credit card still hasn't been charged...is this normal?

Can we start getting sexed already?

The collectormania website still has Tony's signing days as yet to be confirmed but hopefully they'll announce the days soon. I also really wanted to meet Alexis and was even considering going down to Milton Keynes on the Sunday but have changed my mind as I don't wanna miss anything at Srenity.

Sorry to my knowledge no lean burgers in the UK as yet, but they are trying with the salads etc..

Still no news about Anthony Stewart Head but Alexis Denisof could have done the Monday I'm sure it wouldn't kill the bloke, but James Marsters I can't miss out on so I'm going to have to travel on the Sunday but not until about midday. The queues for James and Tony are going to be huge so you'd best arrive early on Monday.

I booked my ticket on the first day of sale and I have still to pay, so they must be waiting until the week of the event.

Have to disagree with you that Starfury rarely show screenings to that extent. Its a staple part of their planning for most events.

Plus it is a PROVISIONAL timetable and subject to change. Hope as I may that the BDM could be shown at the con, Sean has expressly stated that there cannot and will not be a showing of Serenity at the con.

Don't build your hopes because they will only be dashed if it can't happen and people will think that the screening "might" happen. So you could disappoint them too.

As to a Behind the Scenes talk - I am as stumped as you and the whole guest panel is VERY unusual! I don't see that as a regular feature but again the BDHs might just want to appear together at least once in the weekend - who knows?

Just a note for Obsidian...

I don't know if you realise that you won't be able to choose which auto session you go into. You will be told which group you are in on the Saturday (always done by ticket number).

My advice would be to see if you can get to know somebody really kind on the first 2 days of the con, who would be willing to pick up an extra autograph for you, if you want a specific actor.

Many people won't want to use up their entire allowance of three 10x8's purchased at the con per guest and might take one through for you out of their allowance and send it on to you if you really want it. Obviously you would still have to supply the item to them but arrangements can always be made when other Browncoats are about.

You guys rock! It’s way too late here right now, so please excuse any stupidity. Thank you.

Okay, I will be flying into London on the 28th and staying at a small hotel just near Paddington Station. We leave out May 4th. I am coming with a friend who is not going to the convention and we are trying to hash out a schedule.

I understand there’s an express train- any idea how long the trip is? And is there a stop near the Thistle, or will I have to hail a cab/ transfer tubes?

Also, I wasn’t planning on going to the talks, just the parties. I know, in retrospect this seems dumb, but I didn’t really think. Nathan, Adam and Alan on one stage- if I was drinking, it’s doubtless something would come out my nose. Anyway, travel time is now a concern.

Also, any recommendations on cheap places to eat, or must see things to see? We’ve got the London Pass and we’re pretty much doing everything we can go to for free on that, so the schedules pretty full. Is it worth it to pay the fee to ride the London Eye thing?

Also, any idea of the travel time to the Shri something-something Mandir? Or Kew Gardens? Or Windsor?

Also… just kidding, there’s no more alsos. Thanks for letting me pick your brain. Any and all suggestions about how to make the most of this trip are welcome. Thanks again!

From Paddington you can get then the Heathrow Express to terminal 2, then a Hoppa bus to the hotel.

Alternatively, you could get a cab from London, but that will cost you a fortune (about £30)!.

I can't help you on all the London stuff because I haven't been down that way in over ten years.

I strongly recommend you spend at least one day at Serenity. It would be a waste to only attend the parties, and you would miss out on your free autograph. You never know, you might convert your friend.

Edited to add: you should check out the hoppa and underground timetables to ensure you can get back to London. The parties are going on until 4am, but the services may not run at that time. Equally, you should check out the Sunday times as these are often limited.

It is fabby that you are coming to the fair city of my birth!

The Express train ( http://www.heathrowexpress.com/) is very quick but very expensive. It takes a third of the time of the tube (15 mins as opposed to 45) but is also 3x the cost (£13 single).

The parties are fantastic, large numbers of people (usually me included) only go for the parties - this is the most amazing way to make friends, I have a group of friends I have been going to cons with for 7 years and some of those have been going for 15 - only for parties! Everyone is different but I don't do any autographs or photos (anyone wanting my allocation just ask) as it takes so long to get them. The guest talks can be fun though so do try and get to one or two - the group talks would be the best use of such a short time but others will say different.

Ok, London - It takes a long time to get to places, so you need to plan. Paddington is a good central location for many things. Personally I wouldn't bother with Windsor for such a short trip but as you are in Paddington you might be able to do Kew, it is very pretty and well worth it. If you like conspiracy theories check out Canary Wharf, it is all on straight lines and has all sorts of masonic symbolism and weird pyramids (you need to look closely though). The Hindu Temple (Shri Swaminarayan Mandir) is in Wembley (north London) and is hard to get to but a great way to see the real London because of how you get there and where it is. http://www.mandir.org/infogallery/index.htm

For easy, cheap food there are Pizza Express and Wagamama's everywhere. Never go to the all you can eat chinese places in London they are a rip-off. If you like Chinese China-town is a must. My favourite place though is a little known bar underneath the Phoenix Theatre (on Charing Cross Road between Tottenham Court Road and Leicester Square, there is a side-foor next to the theatre where the bar is). The beer is very expensive but there is an excellent choice but you can get a three course mmeal for £14 and it is very good value, not amazing quality but filling and tasty. The place is very relaxed too! For lunch I would go to supermarkets and make your own or, alternatively go to any Boots, M&S etc and buy sandwiches/salads there, the nicest place for lunch if the weather is good is the Thames. Sitting on the Southbank with food and wine (pinch glasses from the National Film Theatre bar and ask to borrow their corkscrew - they are ususally obliging, or just take your own).

If you want to do things for free all of the museums are amazing and the best thing is because they are free you can just 'pop in' - they are a good way to relax and chill out if you need a break. (especially the British Museum because it is so close to Tottenham Court Road). Covent Garden is good to do for free because it is so mad - especially if the weather is nice.

Anyway this must be boring so if you want to know anything else just ask.

Emma and Wren have all your queries covered. Just to add - you asked about the London Eye. I did that recently and I'm not sure I'd spend that much money and time. Not if you're trying to pack lots in. London's much more interesting from the ground. Given the choice between the talks and the London Eye, I know where I'd be. Sunday from 12 to 4 looks especially good. Nathan & Morena, then Jewel & Summer, followed by Alan and Adam and finally everyone together.

April 26 - Train to Stratford-Upon-Avon, see the historical sights and tourist traps. RSC "Twelfth Night" at 7:30; pray to catch last train back to London at 23:00 hours!

April 27 - Check out of London hotel and catch flight to Edinburgh. Meet Jodie and Leo (my Irish girls!), hang with Napier College crowd. Go clubbing with the young folk at Jodie's favorite hot spot, OPIUM (do you think it will be anything like The Bronze??)

April 28 - Another day in Edinburgh, touring and hanging out

April 29 - Catch morning flight back to Heathrow, then Hoppa bus to the Thistle Hotel by 1 pm. Queue up for a room at 2 pm and register for convention stuff around 3 pm.

April 29,30, May 1st - Serenity Convention! Dress Sami up as Padme for Jedi night; wear my 1880s costume for WildWest night; dress us both up as elegant courtesans for Companions/Shepherd night.

May 2 - Have breakfast, check out, catch an afternoon flight back home to New Jersey and ol' Bonnet Bob.

Sounds insane, doesn't it? My biggest worry is getting back to London from Shakespeareland, because if we don't get that train, we'll be in big trouble. The next morning we have that flight to Edinburgh, otherwise I'd have just made the Stratford-Upon-Avon an overnight.

I keep telling myself, it'll alllll work out great.

You can find sing-alongs all the time, especially about 3 o'clock in the morning. I was at one con where the singing didn't stop until breakfast at 6. I feel very sorry for the bar-staff, they deserve medals!
It has even been known for the con dances to happen with no music, only sing-alongs - fantastic!

Sorry to take so long to reply!

As I live in a college town (Austin) and a state that produces innumerable brands of beer and wine (Texas)- I don't think I would fly across an ocean just to party.

Which was sort of my point.

I'm flying to England for this con because it's in England. If I wanted to go just to meet the people from the show, I'd have attended a con in the states. Therefore, I need to see England while I am there. Also, I really wanted to meet other fans who would excuse moments of embarrassing geeking out over the genius of Firefly. It’s very hard to share a laugh over Jane’s HI-larious hat with people who ask “Jane? Which one is she?”
You know?

Hi everyone,

Haven't posted here in a while but with the con fast approaching I thought I'd better send in a wave...

I'd definitely be interested in coming along to any meetups that may be happening as I'll be there on my own and obviously want to meet as many other fans as possible. It's one of the biggest parts of a large event like this. I'm a seasoned con goer (including past Starfury cons, although not for a few years) but this will be my first Browncoat event.

Anyone else coming down from the West Midlands? I am travelling from Kingswinford, near Dudley, on the coach and am currently scheduled to get to Heathrow about 17:30 on Friday, although as they screwed up my booking I am going to try to change that to arrive a few hours earlier. I'll be there for the whole weekend and at the meet and greet on the Friday night.

Hope to meet some of you at the con. Don't worry, I'm a Kaylee fan, so I must be nice!

Why don't you plan to do a short party on the Friday, or perhaps even skip Friday altogether? I will get shot for saying this but the Opening Ceremony can be an anti-climax, it depends on the guests. If you skipped Friday altogether you could come Satuday afternoon (guest talk, dealers room, photos etc) or evening (have the whole day with your friend, parties often don't start until 9/10pm) and stay the whole night. The party will go on until 4 and there are always room-parties afterwards and people hanging around the lobby. As long as you pay for something occasionally you are a customer and the hotel won't mind. You could then do whatever you fancy on Sunday.

Whatever you do have fun and do what you want!

So, to be clear, after the show, it's the after-party. Then after the party, it's the hotel lobby. Then round about 4, we gotta clear the lobby. Right?

And I would normally bring up your description of the opening ceremony as "an anti-climax" in the grammar thread but given as I'm feeling such a big build up to the whole event, I think I know what you mean.

I`ve lost track of what is going on in this thread aren`t we there to have as much fun as time allows? If the Doctor is there, surely we can all get together in his TARDIS & go backwards & forwards to the bits of the con we like

I'll have my laptop with me, and assuming I can get the adapter and power conversion thing to work, it will act as a DVD player.

BTW - 600+ of us in the TARDIS? Should be fun.

Emma, I just meant it's a bit weird for an opening ceremony to be an anti-climax because a climax should be at the end, see? I think it was Sam Goldwyn who said that the perfect film would start off with a volcano erupting and slowly build to a powerful climax.

Alas, poor MGM. Beaten down by the money men.

You`re bringing your own sofa? how much do you charge for rental?

Tardis will easily hold 600 or 600,000, it`s a portal in space/time

I`ve got 20 scripts typed up for the unoffical reading of `Dead or Alive` script (the one that didn`t get made!) - hope to get people together to do this at some point or maybe just get people to read out ceratin parts into a MD recorder & splice it together in MP3 form (all for fun!)
