One of the many glories of Firefly is that so much is said visually. Simon is urged to tell a funny story and there's a quick cut to River. Her eyes are shining. She's expectant. "It's going to be a great story! My brother is so shiny!" is all there in one brief reaction shot. I started thinking about the scenes which brought out something about the characters' inner cores without a word being said.

Man, there are so many! Zoe standing in the moonlight looking scary and cool as hell after cutting the throat of an Alliance scout. River gazing in delight at the stars.

Here's some more for each character. Jayne leering at Inara when the Councilor leaves and Inara rolling her eyes. Inara, with her head cocked and a "Well? I'm waiting!" expression on her face after she asks Mal what the last cargo they smuggled was. Mal's destroyed expression watching the Alliance ships land. The look on Wash's face as he rises unsteadily to his feet, right before he says "Bastard's not gonna GET days!" Simon watching River dance with a mixture of surprise, pride and love. Book performing last rites over the bodies of the bandits Mal killed while everybody else ignores them and dances, In OMR. Kaylee eating chocolates and looking at her frilly dress and don't forgeet the strawberry scene!

This is just scratching the surface, too! Any body else have any others?

Someone pointed this out in another thread, so I can't take credit, but it's a great moment. In Out of Gas, when Mal is trying to get Wash up to the bridge, there's a moment where he gets angry and pushes him up against the wall of the sick bay. Jayne, the ultimate badass, takes a step backwards when he sees Mal's fury. That reaction is great, and really adds to the intensity of the scene.

There's also the shot in Serenity of badass Jayne worriedly peering into the infirmary window as Simon operates on Kaylee...a nice moment that humanizes Jayne and shows how important Kaylee is to the ship and crew.

Just a few that popped into my head:

Saffron rolling her eyes right before she kicks Wash into unconsciousness in OMR.

Mal and Zoe's reaction in Ariel when Jayne blurts out his lines to the check-in nurse.

After Mal insults Kaylee in Shindig, Zoe's look and her taking the heavy (according to him) bag from Mal and effortlessly shouldering it and walking off.

Somebody referenced Wash's look in WS right before he gets all macho. I love the look on Zoe's face right after he says that line. I always interpreted it as a sense of loss (probably over-reading).

Jayne in his bunk in Message. Pulling off the blanket covering his guns, and going back to sleep.

The back and forth between Mal and Book in WS when Mal realizes they are headed for a net. He looks to Book for confirmation and Book nods. I thought that was a nice touch.

I shaved off my beard for you, devil woman!

Jaynestown... when Jayne is in the infirmary, taping a gun to his side.... Mal tells him he can't do that, and Jayne realises he has to pull off the tape. That little-boy look from Jayne is excellent!

i gotta say that my favorite non verbal moment was...

When Jayne is on the table drugged up after his fall in Trash, and Simon explains to him why he can't move ('pine ok??)and why he will never hurt him and Jayne says "Anybody there?"
River leans her head into the room and Jayne's expression is Priceless..."Anybody else?"

River standing on the catwalk in OiS. Best shot in the series. Creepy as hell to look at and spake volumes about the character - the connection with the ship, the head tilted to one side as if listening when she heard everything wherever she was, the fact she was in the same reality as everyone, but seeing things from an outside angle.

In Heat of Gold when Inara's friend gets killed. At first Mal and Inara look worried and sad at the body and at eachother, then she gives him this look of hatred, and he nods and runs off to go get the guy.(I can't remember the names)

And in out of gas when Jayne askes Inara for her companion stories. Then she says" Oh I have stories, funny and sexy" Then the look of Jayne is just so priceless...

OMR, when Saffron says "do you want me to...wash your feet?" Mal has the funniest look ever.

Also when she first says she's his wife, his very stupid expression and the blink. Very nice.

Two moments.

#1 - "That's why I never kiss em on the mouth" - DEAD silence and the *whole crew* slowly turning to Jayne with this repulsed, shocked look...

#2 - Jaynes suggestive-adoring leer as he strokes Vera after telling Mal her name...

Mal's expression at the end of the into to Our Mrs. Reynolds. He's trying to wrap his brain around the concept that he's married and just can't process the idea. Caption should read "he undertands, he doesn't comprehend".

River when she bends over to pick up the stick (gun) sitting on the floor of the cargo bay. IMO just about a perfect personification of her character. That is an incredibly beautiful shot.

When Jayne is drugged up and imobilized on the med table. The look on his face when River leans into the room and says that she can kill him with her brain...priceless. I think he just about $#*! kittens right then and there.

I loved when Simon was going to give River a shot and she stuck her tongue out at the needle....

In Out of Gas when Mal says "Oh, there is kissing then?" The way they grin at each other....

Book trying to lift the weights while Jayne is distracted by the Counselor and Inara...

River's scream when she sees Books hair and as he looks around the corner and Zoe sees him... priceless!

The strange little smile River has when she gets the pages from Book....

The expression on Simon's face as he looks at Jayne's statue and the look Jayne gives everybody as they discuss it....

The look Mal gives Jayne when he sees the getup Jayne is wearing before they leave Serenity to go into Canton...

HEAVENS! There are sooo many!

The short, annoyed shrug and head nod to the left that Mal gives Jayne, Simon, and River after shooting in the door at the back of the hospital in "Ariel". It's as if he's suggesting they stop goofing off and come on. And he is.

No one's mentioned Simon and Kaylee and Tracey's wake in the end of The Message. Just them holding hands.

But these are all great.

I love River dancing in Safe.

I think Heart of Gold is one of the poorer episodes because of the cheesiness (never the less I still rate it as far better than most of the dross on tv). However, I love the expressions on River's face as she observes the prostitute during labour. Sheer class!

Oh, I love the look of dread on Simon's face when Jayne tells him to get over to the derelict ship in Bushwacked and he realizes he has to get into his space suit.
His look of anxiety and the sound of his breathing as he makes his way over to the ship.
And, when he gets over to the others and sees them all standing around looking at him and he realizes that Jayne was yanking him.
And then Kaylee comes over and points out how he has the suit on wrong!!
The whole sequence was priceless!

There is a quick moment in Bushwhacked, when the gang is playing Hoopball, Mal and Wash struggle for the ball, Mal ends up on the bottom and he tweaks Wash's nose to get away! It's very quick, and I've never heard anyone else mention it.

When Simon is sewing up Mal at the end of the episode, Mal’s yelp of pain followed by Simon trying to smother his surprised smile.

The end of Ariel. When Simon gives River the new medicine, the look she gives him, a little uncertain, trusting, almost as if she’s looking into him to see how she will turn out.

My favorites -

Jayne ogling Vera just after he tells Mal the name. Someone else mentioned this - it rules.

The look on Mal's face when Jayne comes up with the word "pretentious" in Shindig.

There are a ton of them.

One of my favorites happens when Simon and River are suited up and clinging to the outside of Serenity as she is being searched by the Alliance during "Bushwacked".
Simon looks out at space briefly with sheer, vertiginous horror -- but River is gazing out to the beauty of infinity with utter awe and joy. She has complete clarity and is completely transported. It's brilliant.

I also love the scene in "Serenity" when Book confesses to Inara that he may be in the wrong spot. His face is filled with doubt and grief, and then Inara reaches to him, switching roles, to offer him grace and peace.

aww I LOVE that scene from The Message I love that whole ep!

And River dancing is very cool and shiny!

I also love Simon's expression/reaction at seeing the statue of Jayne in Jaynestown.

I love Kaylee's expression at the ball in Shindig, where Mal walks her in and she's so happy and nevous and excited.

I love the expression on Jayne's face after putting on the hat in The Message and then everyones expresssions.

there are so many good one! Kaylee's face in Safe when Book is in the infirmary after being shot.
And her face in OiS when Jubal threatens her.

The greatness of Jossverse, the brilliance of the little moments....

I love most of the Jayne moments; and the scene where he carries Kaylee in Serenity after the fed shot her...Yeah, love that one

In Safe, when River goes dancing...absolutely priceless to see her as the carefree teenager she should have been. And Simon's expression as he watches the little sister he used to know. And all this after she has her bad morning.

We've done this before. Or maybe after, since this thread was started before I joined Fff.n Anyway, a lotta these look familiar.

My fave, by a long way, is Jayne's farewell (he's the last to board a shuttle) to Mal, in Outa Gas. He does say "Well", just to let you know a communication is comin' up, but it's all visual. A (perfectly) long, unflinching look directly into Mal's eyes, followed by a crisp turn & exit, screen right, in about one second.

The farewell between two stoic men, when one is staying behind to die, is classic theatre. I cannot recall seeing it done better. This is one for the classrooms.

I don't know if this has been mentioned...

After many sittings, I found a gem moment in Trash. When Yosafbridge was explaining the plan to the crew at the kitchen table.

The expressions on both Wash and Kaylee as they listen, especially Kaylee's. Then Wash burst out saying "...What is she doing here???". Watching Kaylee's face changing from attentive/childlike, to laughing her head off at Wash's question, is just priceless. I don't have the words for it, just so 'real', and so funny.

YES! I was hoping this thread would show up again after it was mentioned in the Screen Gems podcast! I had seen it several times before but I failed to read it...

Here's some, character for character:

Mal- Anytime he cows Jayne with just a look. The look of annoyance and disbelief when he gets winged in Serenity, as well the utter look of annoyance just before he shoots Patience's horse. One more...In Safe, after Simon makes the crack about cunningly concealed cows, the way Mal smiles just before the "too much time on your hands" line

River- After she says "They're here" in Ariel, the way her mouth opens...conveys just how scary the blue hands are. In Safe, the way she's running around the store, touching everything, just like any child would do after they've been let out after being cooped up too long. All of her slow walk through the two ships in Bushwhacked.

Simon- Though his expression almost doesn't change, the little pause and shift in body language when River says "I threw up on your bed." The first time we even see Simon in his suit and sunglasses...everything about him screams danger. The look of concern and importance in his little jog towards the unconcious Book in Objects in Space.

Jayne- Of course, his reaction to the interegator in Bushwhacked. The look of shock when he figures out why he's a hero in Jaynestown. His look of disgust at having to holster his pistol in Badger's office in Serenity.

Kaylee- Her look of shock at seeing the fireball coming in Out of Gas. Her look of mock annoyance just before she says "I'm pointin' right at it" in the same episode. Any time Jewel Staite conveys hurt...as she did twice in Shindig.

Inara- The open look of longing she gives Mal at the end of Our Mrs. Reynolds. Her look of confusion and almost disappointment right after Mal's "I knew you let her kiss you" line in the same sequence. Her look of satisfaction as she closes the dumpster lid in Trash.

Zoe- How she looks utterly exhausted during the battle of Serenity Valley sequence in Serenity. How she looks unconcious in Out of Gas (Its disturbing to see Zoe in such a state.) The very subtle tension the builds up in her right before she says "I'm going to bed" in Our Mrs. Reynolds.

Book- His doubletake when River says shes fixing his bible in Jaynestown(and the fact that he calls River "Sweetheart" just before it was especially endearing.) The way he suddenly appears in the hallway preceding the Special Hell speech in Our Mrs. Reynolds. The way he zips around the corner at the end of said speech.

Wash- His gestures and body language when he's trying to get suggestions for what to do with Zoe on Ariel. The utter look of calm while escaping the Reavers in Serenity. Anytime he slaps Zoe on the butt! (So funny to me for some reason, but a very good illustration of their marriage working.)

I'll come back when I have some more!

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

My favourite moment is in War Stories, where Kaylee backs up the ramp into Serenity as three of Niska's men approach. @first she's unable to fire the gun she's holding, then unable to hold onto it, unable to stop them. Her face shows she is utterly broken because she can't overcome her fear even though she knows that, if they lose Serenity, they are all lost.

Kaylee asks about how many of them feel madly in love with her and wanted to take her away from all of this. Inara:"Just the one, I must be losing my touch."
she then turns and walks up the stairs.

The beginning of OMR after Saffron runs off crying. Mal follows commenting something along the lines of someone else not finding it funny.

Inara's expression when Mal walks past shows her feelings for Mal better than any exposition ever could (I think it may be the best display of her feelings on the subject until she breaks down in HoG).

There's also a moment around the same scene, just as Inara moves to return to her shuttle. Mal glances up, and for a very brief moment he seems to flail at what to say, as if he wasn't expecting her to leave, and he wants a reason to keep her there. One from the blooper reel! Its been stated that Alan Tudyk is the cast member that's probably the most like his character. So, when the pyro guys set off a spark squib too near his ass in the blooper reel, Mr. Tudyk's very real reaction to it is in keeping with how Wash would react. So funny!

From "Shindig" - Mal and Jayne's shared amusement over Badger's unintentional double-entendre: "But I got my hands on a couple..." (of *invites*, of course).

Mal's stiltled puckering up to "get it on" with Zoe at the end of "War Stories" - classic!

See, this is another sign of your tragic space dementia, all paranoid and crotchety.

Lots of great stuff already mentioned which is really a tribute to the actors and directors!

A couple of people have mentioned the scene in Shindig where Mal and Jayne have gone to talk to Badger. I liked the segments they mentioned but what I loved most about the scene was Jayne reaching over to grab Mal's drink when Mal makes it clear he's not interested in drinking something that might make him go insane. That moment said so much about Jayne's "live for the moment" attitude.

Two in Badger's office in Serenity

The look Zoe gives Mal when Badger mentions that the goods are Alliance imprinted.

The smile Mal gives Badger after all the guns are out.

I've been thinking about this thread alot lately.

In Shindig...That very subtle and strange look of almost loathing or not understanding that Book gives River that goes witht the line "We'll have a few mystery meals." The look that Simon and Book give Jayne after he says "Are we gonna play cards or screw around?"

In Serenity, Inara seems kinda shocked...well, shocked is the wrong word, when her John at the beginning makes his off color comment about her clock. The look right after that would seem to denote that its something that she's used to, and it makes me sad for her. Even for a hooker, she's too good for this, and that idea is portrayed very early on.

In Safe, the very quick and fleeting look Inara gives Simon after he's made his comment about Serenity. Kaylee retorts, and leaves. Inara, knowing that Kaylee's got the hots for the doctor seems to say with a look "I would've helped you, but man, did you screw up by insulting that ship."

I'll go see if I can find some more!

The first thing I thought of was Mal's reaction at the end of the intro to Our Mrs. Reynolds, as already mentioned. It's just such a joy watching three or four increasingly volatile emotions pile up on Fillion's face... priceless.

Right before Mal yells at Wash to get to the bridge in Out of Gas, there's this momentary look on Mal's face that says to me that he's in complete control, and grudgingly making the *decision* to get mad. Yes, he's angry, but he wouldn't act on it like that if he didn't feel that was the best way to get Wash moving. One of the things I love in that episode is seeing him deal with each member of the crew differently.

Toward the end of Jaynestown, as Jayne is shaking the dead Mudder and telling him to get up, there's this beautiful shot of Mal looking away, ashamed at a spectacle he has obviously seen before. So much conveyed in that little look...

Hm, I guess those are all from Mal. Didn't mean to do that...

Oh, here's a non-Mal one: The moment in the intro to Objects in Space when River finds the stick. It's just... so... wow.

There are so many, I like the character by character approach - and for me I love the moments that define these great people. Some of these have been mentioned, some have not.

Mal - love the couple of extra jabs in "Shindig", not for the great reaction of the the other folks, but for what it says about Mal. A classic hero lets him live, and helps him up. A villian runs him threw. What kind of a hero just makes a few more shallow holes? A BDH thats who!

Inara - Her reaction to Jayne's leer in "War Stories" says - "Why am I with these people" and her look when Mal says he is the only one who does not find his nuptials funny - which says "This is why I am with these people"

Zoe - Watching her eyes on her first trip through Miska's station - total recon op, totally convincing while being subtle.

River - lots of good ones already mentioned - love the lean in when she looks at the gun - to me the posture was so unreal - emblematic of her unreality - she's a girl, but she's something else, just like the gun.

Book - The look on his face in Out of Gas when River catches him praying/panicing. To me this guy has some kind of a past, and he is on a road to trying to make up for it - and at that moment he is really worried if he is prepared to meet his maker.

Simon - silly, but I love the delightfully uncomfortable gesture that goes along with "Just dont fiddle with it" line. Competent doctor meets socially uncomfortable dork.

Jayne - Probably the Vera look, but give me a break, physically he is continually brilliant.

Wash - The impish satisfied look on his face, in fact in his whole body, when Zoe cooks for him.

Kaylee - She is a delight - the look she gives the counselor, the strawberry. But for me, I love the way she, arguably more than Mal, is at home on Serenity, has a connection with Serenity. For Mal - Serenity is everything for what it does for him - allows him to be free. But Kaylee simply loves Serenity. So for me I just love her expression as they close up the bay in "Serenity" a look not only of disapointment that they only picked up 3 "shiny" new folks as passengers, but almost of not being able to understand why she does not have to fight passengers off with a stick because who would'nt want to be on board. And then the way she picks up that K-mart blue light special lawn chair - she is just so at home where she is, and it also lets us know that this is not the perfect future of "Star Trek" where everyone is super smart and everything is super clean and classy - this is a future where you pick up lawn chair at a flea market and sit on it.

See how I'm not hitting him, I think I've grown!

I don't Mal is angry at all with Wash. If you watch the scene again, just before Mal tells Wash to get to the bridge, Simon has just made a comment that everyone needed to clear out so he could work. He even has to move to see a monitor that Wash is blocking. There was absolutely no anger in Mal when he did what he did to get Wash moving. But, his actions clearly brooked no argument. And, the others in the infirmary are quite shocked by what Mal is doing...Jayne in particular, but also Book. That Wash is actually needed on the bridge is not in argument, as he refuses to get him when Zoe's heart stops. But, if Wash had returned to the infirmary again, I don't think any amount of intimidation from the Captain would have gotten him out of there again.

This is another great thing abut Firefly. Some of the actions that the crew takes are open to wide interpretation, and I think its quite deliberate. Also, gives us something else to debate over!

Thanks Joss!

My favourite non-verbal moment is when the two dinosaurs are deciding on a planet to settle on in "Serenity".

The carnivorous dinosaur looks meaningfully at the herbivorous dinosaur and you just know that the moment Wash lets go of that plastic carnivorous monster that he is gonna go for the herbivour. But he hides it so well from Wash, that the plastic Tyrannosaurus leaps on that Brontosaur and kills it cruelly.

The clever thing about Joss Whedon is the way he draws your attention from this momentous occasion by bringing in an Alliance spaceship. So that Wash's attention is diverted and we thus never find out what happens to these two pivotal characters.

When I read the Topic the first one that popped into my head was in Jaynestown when The Nallad Of Jayne starts playing. The looks of everyone are so hilarious. Wash's specifically.

Also, in Shindig when Mal tosses Inara the sword. The way she catches it is just perfect. Like, that was exactly the way Inara would catch something? I dunno, but I loved it.

Adam Baldwin is a fantastic physical actor and almost every face and movement that Jayne makes is just hi-larious.

The look between him and Inara right after Inara kisses the counciler good bye was so funny.

My show is too pretty to die.

I don't think this one has been mentioned but it's certainly one of my favourites:

In the Message, after Simon has insulted Kaylee by saying she's the only possible girl he could be with, and she leaves him stuttering. When he comes up to her afterwards hoping she'd forgiven him and asks what mail they had gotten, she gives him a look of pure contempt before walking off. Alan Tudyk says it's a look Jewel has used before in the commentary and it makes me laugh every time. I'm sure I'm not the only guy who has received similar looks on many occasions. You girls must be taught that by your mums or something!!!

I love the little things too...

Such as Mal slapping Jayne's fingers away from Simon's cake in "Out Of Gas".

The look River gives Simon in "The Train Job" when he asks her if she knows who he is as she freaks out, kinda like 'Well, if you don't know your own name, how the hell are you going to help me?'

Jayne, smackin' the cows in "Safe".

Zoe, the way she gets so excited about teasing Mal and inviting everyone to the cargo bay to meet Mal's new wife and how she laughs herself stupid in that scene.

The completely unnecessary spin Inara gives in the bar fight in "Shindig". Seriously, the guy that comes barelling over the bar takes a good minute or so before he even gets close. She could have just stepped aside, but has to be girly about it.

The way Kaylee and Simon wake up together in "Jaynestown", all comfy before Mal shows up.

In "Ariel", the way River does exactly what the Alliance guys want her to do before they tell her to do it (ie- sits down, gets up to follow). It's like she's done this a million times before. Also, she manipulates the situation so that the Alliance guys have minimal physical contact with her.

The way Mal touches Inara's shoulder in "Serenity" when telling her to take her shuttle and go. And again in "Objects In Space" when he touches the cut on her lip.

The little face Kaylee makes in "Shindig" when Mal comes to tell her he has a job for her.

River with a gun.

The image scanner that Simon uses to get a picture of River's brain. That shot was beautiful.

The way Mal grabs Kaylee to him in "Ariel". And also when he kisses her in "Our Mrs. Reynolds".

And so many more...

Can I add some from Serenity? (Sorry if there are other threads that have discussed this - saw the movie late, missed out on a lot of post-movie talk).

Select to view spoiler:

- The whole Mal/Inara conversation over the com-link. Most of it is non-verbal. The stilted body language, throat clearing, Inara's flushed cheeks ... just beautiful.
- Mal's little moment after he's had to be big bad guy to the crew in order to get to Miranda. Goes to his cabin and lets himself lose it.
- The tears in River's eyes as she's helping to patch up Serenity.

There's a Mal/Inara moment in Bushwhacked. I think she's complimenting him for giving the order to have the bodies buried. For just a moment there's a light in his eyes, a softness, as he lets her warmth wash over him. Then it's gone and his face is dead again.

1)In Serenity when Wash tells Zoe, "Don't forget to call him Sir, he likes that." After Mal comes in and Zoe calls him Sir, Wash gives Zoe the funniest thumbs up.

2)This one tugs my heart strings everytime. In Safe, when Simon says, they're actually charging money for this..and Kaylee looks so vunerable, it hurts me.

Think it's already been said, but, when River is dancing in "Safe" and Simon's just watching her with this proud, loving look in his eyes, it's just beautiful. And in "HoG", at the beginning, when Mal says something like, "That business wouldn't happen to be in somebody's pants, would it?" and Inara just gives him this disbelieving look, then just walks away. And, of course, at the end of said ep, on the catwalk, when they're being all "truthsome". That whole scene is just filled!

There's so much more, but that's all I can come up with for now...

I always laugh at the way Jayne is gnawing his apple at the end of that knife as they wait to catch a glimpse of the counselor in War Stories. It makes his expression when he finally sees "her" that much funnier.

I'm also a fan of the sequence in the pilot "Serenity" as Mal tells everone over the intercom about the passing Reaver ship. We see what each crew member is doing in preparation. Jayne readies his guns, Inara gets out that mysterious syringe, etc., all designed to tell us how bad the Reavers scared them.

In Safe, at the dinner table scene at the end I love it when River steals the bread off Jayne's plate and he has to reach for another.

One I find absolutely histerical is in Trash when Mal comes back on the ship after his fight with Yosaffbridge with the paper sticking out of his nose and Wash's reaction as he passes him on the stairs (the silent double finger waggle at his own nose kills me.).

I really like the scene in the pilot when Dobson has River at gunpoint and Simon has a gun also as he and Dobson argue over her. In the middle of that argument and Simon's unsure handling of the situation Mal marches in with a purpose, unholsters his gun and almost matter of factly shoots Dobson in the face right next to River's head. Problem solved. That sequence told us a lot about Mal. When he's all business you better watch out.

Everyone's right. There's so many. And there were only 15 episodes.

Well, as a rule I say girl folk ain't to be trusted.

Those dynamics through that whole episode really touch me, including that one. I love the fact that if you watch that scene closely, you see that Mal is scary enough to make Jayne back away, but he is completely in control and actually very gentle with Wash. What he did was forceful enough to get through to him, but not so much that he would add any hurt or fear to what Wash was already facing.

That whole episode shows what an incredible leader Mal is, knowing who to be gentle with (Kaylee), who to be forceful with (Wash), who to be forthright with (Jayne), who to spend a private moment with without letting it become cripplingly emotional (Inara)....I could go on and on.

One of my favorite non-verbal character moments is at the end of War Stories. When Mal is back on the ship, walking up the stairs, he stops and gently takes Kaylee's hand in passing. That brings tears to my eyes every single time; he has been though such hell, yet he has the heart and the compassion to reach out and reassure Kaylee. Touches me to the core every time.

In the pilot when Mal busts open the chest that River is in and the look on his face of pure surprise and shock is simply priceless. Then the ingenious line of "Huh" to truly make it one of the best scenes I have ever seen.

"I threw up on your bed" -River

For some reason the War Stories scene with the blindfolded Wash looking around for Mal has been on my mind since I read it here.....one of the many absolutely heartbreaking moments in that episode.

How could anyone hurt those two guys? :sniff:

I'll try to do one from each episode:

1. Serenity: Mal looking at Jayne in Badger's office when the guns come out, and then turning back to Badger and trying that goofy smile to put things back in a conversational mood (I know in the rough pilot there's a line there, but it's better in the finished version).

2. The Train Job: Mal's face, and wipe of the nose, after kicking Niska's man into the engine.

3. Bushwhacked: The moment between Mal and Simon as Mal is searching the ship, with the "uh oh, what are you doing here" and looking like he's going to improvise a plan to keep them from being seen.

4. Shindig: Jayne and Mal enjoying the diamond the size of a testicle and Badger having his hands on a couple... of invites.

5. Safe: Mal and Zoe when they see how the Alliance turns around on helping Book.

6. Our Mrs. Reynolds: Almost everything: Mal showing Jayne his hat, anything Christina Hendricks does, but I love Jayne and Mal's faces coming off of "How drunk was I last night?"; "I don't know, I passed out"

7. Jaynestown: Mal's half-fake, half-not paternal scowl when he comes to get Kaylee, Jayne, and Simon.

8. Out of Gas: tied between the Mal and Inara shared joke -- one of the times he managed to make a light "whore" joke, but also let her know his real regard -- and Jayne's look when leaving Mal on the ship, not having anything to say, but clearly impressed by him.

9. Ariel: mostly Mal's face after they get back to Serenity and he's hugging Kaylee and being very pleasant -- watch it again and you can at least interpret a lot of patient insincerity as he's waiting to be alone with Jayne.

10. War Stories: Mal's injured but astounded "are you freakin' kidding me?" face when both Niska and the torturer leave him alone, also when he tries to get Zoe to take Wash out of there before Niska changes his mind.

11. Trash: Again, almost anything Christina Hendricks does. Also, though, Mal trying to keep up with her explanation about him bringing her back.

12. The Message: Mal at the funeral, looking as pained as we ever see him.

13. Heart of Gold: actually I like this episode a lot, and it has my favorite non-verbal in the whole series with Mal and Inara together over Nandi. It's a whole conversation and more honest about what both of them feel than any other actual conversation they have. To my eyes it goes something like:
Mal (coming in): Nandi, no!
Inara: she's gone
Mal: I'm sorry (both for her loss and for the previous night)
Inara (getting angry)no... him. kill him for me.

Forgive my lame sketch dialogue, because non-verbal communication are inarticulable ideas, but that sense of what goes on there always gives me goosebumps.

15. Objects in Space: Simon as he gets the idea that it might be "his moment" right before Early tells him that it's not, also Kaylee/Jewel giving everything and then some in her scene with Early.

16. Serenity:

Select to view spoiler:

Mal's look as River collapses in the Maidenhood. The man looked ready to kill her for his own safety if he had to, but when she drops, his face changes quickly from tension to confusion to concern. Also, the look Mal and Inara share when he leaves them.

One form the movie.

When Mal is watching the flexy of Inara in the background River is sniffing Inara's bed with a 'ewww' look on her face.

I was the only one in the thearter that laughed. Anyone else find that funny as hell?

River's head appearing above and Simon & Kaylee... (or did somebody already mention that?)
