Edit; as of 7/8/05 I have already bought season two, three and season four as well. I'm really diggin' it. I suppose this thread should read: Should I buy Season Five? at this point.
Back to original post:
If I buy season 2, will I be able to stop there? Or will I be inexorably addicted and unable to NOT purchase them all the way to season seven?
I'm being somewhat flip here, but I liked season one. I could stop here. But I'm thinkin' about getting S2.
I mean, like, if I lost my job and became homeless and a kind person handed me $50 for food, would I turn around and spend it on season 4 to play on my cheap hand held dvd player in a dark alley somewhere, simply 'cause I didn't own it yet?
Would it get that bad??
Wanting S2, but scared of it too Chrisisall

Yes, definitely buy it. Watching Buffy S2 all the way through will probably (from what I've heard, not having seen the movie) give you better emotional preparation for seeing "Serenity" than watching the "Firefly" dvds again. And it's a true classic on it's own anyway. The only problem with the dvds is the picture quality, but that's not due to the transfer. The first two seasons of Buffy were filmed on 16mm film due to the low WB budget. Thereafter, it was filmed on 35mm and had a much better look on the subsequent dvds.

YES, BUY IT. I liked season 1 as well (I actually started watching Buffy on the very first airing) but season 2 is vastly superior. When you finish the last episode, you won't be asking this same question again - you'll be RUNNING out to buy season 3.

I think season 2 and 3 are much better than season 1 (although I love all 7 seasons). If you just want to SEE them and you're a dedicated watcher, join netflix.
For, like, $18 a month, I think, you can have 3 rentals out at a time. If you are a dedicated (ie, obsessed) viewer, you can watch as many as 6 discs a week. Heck, you could plow throw a season in a week, and 4 seasons in a month, which means you could pretty much watch all of Buffy and Angel for about $60!

You should definitely get season 2. That's where the series establishes itself as something not just really good, but actually profound. Will you be inexorably addicted to the rest of the show? Probably, but there are a couple of escape points if you want to take them. The initial mission statement of the series ends with season three when high school ends, so you could jump off there.
If you go on to season four, you should hang in through season 5. Together they're about the difficult transformation from being a child in a family to being a parent. In a lot of ways season 4 is a setup for season 5. The end of season 5 is the second escape point. I won't say why; the less you know, the better.
Once you've made it through season 5, you might as well finish the whole thing. Season six is probably the most controversial since a lot of it deals with the dark side of both good and bad sex, lust, and love. Although many people think seasons 4, 5 and 6 don't hold together as well as the first three, they each have one of the three best individual shows in the series: Hush, The Body, and Once More, With Feeling. I haven't figured out season 7 yet. I like it, but I don't think I get it.
There's a whole other problem lurking in the flickering light of your DVD player; at the end of Buffy season three, Angel splits off into his own series, and Cordelia goes with him. You might think you can dismiss this, but IMHO the best short story arch in the whole series starts with two episodes of Buffy season 4 and ends with two episodes of Angel season 1. So now you're in for another five seasons of Angel, and you DO want to hang in there for season 5. Wow, what a series ender!
Any way, that's my two cents. Good luck with whatever you decide.

S2 is probably the most addictive. You'll then rush out to buy S3. My recommendation is, buy the S1-4 bundle, and give your extra S1 to someone else. If you can't afford it, then join Blockbuster online (cheaper than Netflix) and rent. Then mainline 12 seasons of Joss Whedon through the end of Angel.
That's what I did. Actually, I connected with Angel a lot more than Buffy, and ended up buying 5 seasons of Angel, while renting S2-S7 of Buffy.

Okay, I went and sold a WHOLE bunch of my movies on dvd to a used dvd place to get enough dough to buy Buffy S2! I am now the proud owner of 22 new (to me) episodes to savor! Should hold me for about two weeks, then - uh oh, maybe I'll sell some of my comics the feed the addiction.

Just a warning. You won't be able to stop. Ever. You'll figure that out soon. The way season 2 ends...you will die if you don't find out what happens so you'll need season 3. And it's pretty much like that for most seasons. If you can't afford to buy them all ($250 on Amazon.com, free shipping), then I'd think about doing the online rental thing. OR, FX network shows two Buffy episodes a day Monday through Friday at 1pm and 2pm EST. Granted, they have to shorten the episode by a couple minutes, and it doesn't look as good as the DVDs, but it's still a great way to get acquainted with the entire series, and quickly. That's how I did it. No complaints here. It's on season 7 right now, so in 2 weeks it will begin again with season 1. On that same note, Angel comes on twice a day on TNT. The 8am EST timeslot is in the middle of season 3 right now, and the 5pm EST timeslot is at the start of season 2. You'll have to wait a couple months for those to get back around to the beginning.
Hope this helps. Happy viewing! And take my advice, DON'T read any online summaries, discussions, etc. before seeing every episode. I was very much spoiled and wonder what it would be like if I wasn't. ALSO, I'd maybe hold off on listening to commentaries if you don't want to be spoiled. I know it's hard to resist, but they record those a good year later and the commentors always give away plot points.

Thanks for the tip. I hadn't really thought of that, but there's a few used dvd places in the area! Even if I can only get a season or two that way, a lot of dough would be saved (but who would let go of a Buffy season?).

Thanks, fray101, I haven't got to the end of the second season yet, so I didn't know. Haloween was great, Lies was better. I was thinkin' I might stop after S3, I'm really likin' it, but it's a financial stretch to get all 7, and frankly, I like Firefly (and my 2nd fav, Dark Angel) a lot more.

Oh, and Angel is good too. You need to at least watch it, if not own it.

Edited to add the following:
When I was out of work for 4 months prior to my back surgery, I SWORE I would not get hooked on soap operas again. Instead, I got hooked on Buffy. Then, later, Angel. WAY more addictive than any old soap, in my opinion.
The week I was in the hospital on a morphine drip and assorted other narcotics, I programmed my VCR to tape the 2 hours of eps each day. I only had an 8 hour tape so I knew I would miss the 5th day. I was in the hospital, in and out of consciousness, not knowing if it was night or day, and I remember my clearest thought was, "Damnit, I'm going to miss Friday's episodes!!"

Okat, today I got S3! I can't stop. IT'S ALL THIS THREADS FAULT!

This is a weird coincidence. I've been re-watching S2 the last few days after having not seen it for a while (in fact I watched "Passion" last night). Personally my favorite season is the 3rd (so yes, it's that good!), but 2 has always been a close 2nd. 4 and 5 are a change-up but I think they're also great. Just not as great as 2 and 3.
You absolutely have to watch through Season 5! Because you just do and when you see it you'll see why.
Season 6 is (for the most part) where Buffy fans tend to start seriously disagreeing. But once you've seen 1-5, you'll have to both satisfy your curiosity and form your own opinion.
If you can't afford to buy them, rent them. Try to watch them on DVD rather than the trimmed and commercially interrupted re-runs.
It may also be a good idea to start watching ANGEL along with Season 4 of BUFFY because that's when the ANGEL spin-off starts.
Rent, borrow, beg, steal (or actually be patient and save your money), but do not deny yourself the (mostly excellent) saga of the Buffyverse!
Oh yeah, and avoid spoilers as much as you can. Experience what happens to these great characters without knowing what's coming.
I'm gonna go finish off Season 2 right now.
Unfortunately, I loaned out Seasons 3-5 to a friend of mine (who does post on this board every now and then and has yet to return them) so I can't move onto S3 when I'm done with 2. But that's my problem.

What I'm doing is kind of strange...I bought S1 cheep at Wal-mart, then I sold a bunch of my dvds (many were vampire movies like Innocent Blood, Vampire Effect, etc. -funny, huh?) to buy S2, now I sold S1 & S2 to buy S3! Kind of like expensive rentals.
I'm gonna keep S3, though, the grainy quality of 1 & 2 was what made letting go of them possible. And it's not like I could forget what I saw.
Now I know where the Monkey Pants thing I keep seeing comes from ha ha ha ha.
After S3, I don't know what I'll do, maybe put $10 a week aside to continue? I'd have to get BS4 with AS1...

I've been so very pleased with myself ever since. And, just to add my voice to this chorus, S2 is incredible. S3 is probably better (I heart the Mayor). S4 is good. S5 is really good and has some of the best individual episodes. S6 has more of the best individual episodes. And S7... well... it had its moments.

i started upon slayerfest 2005 last week, marathoning my way through every episode of buffy and angel (i already own all the dvd box sets) and just finished season 3 last night.
a lot of people talk up seasons 2 and 3 as the best and that later ones weren't quite as good, but i personally prefer the later stuff. a big part of that is probably from when spike returns to something of a regular character. i actually found myself kinda surprised that i wasn't enjoying him so much in s2 because as his role evolves he turns into my fave character in the buffyverse so don't lose hope in him. the last few moments of the ep he does in s3 hint a bit more at how much fun he becomes :)

I'll accept that there were weak moments in the later series (don't want to give anything away but are several "potential" reasons why I preferred Angel's last season to Buffy's). However, once you've sat through those first few seasons you'll be so emotionally invested in the characters that you'll have to see it through to the end.

I've read a great deal about all the seasons, and I think I'm gonna buy S4 then S5, and probably stop there. From what I gather, 6 & 7 were the weakest seasons, and many on this board seem to feel it would have been better and more meaningful to end it at S5. Also Xander has so little screen time in S7, and he's my favourite character!
Any thoughts on that?

To be quite honest I was dying to know what happened to everyone after the season 5 finale, and personally, season 6 didn't disappoint.
It may be a little dark and depressing, but I was 14 when it was being shown on the tv, I I thoroughly enjoyed the season as a whole. There were some bad episodes, but there were a lot more bad episodes in season 4, which was a boring season in comparison.

I hear ya. Angel was a good series, but wasn't as good as Buffy. However, when I watched season 5 of Angel, things changed a great deal. Probably the second best full season of a Whedon series, (right behind Buffy s2) I was blown away. If you can rent or borrow the Angel series, the payoff is more than worth it.

Yea, you must buy season 6! "Once More With Feeling"! The Buffy musical! You must have Buffy musical! The Trio (Nemesises)! And the main villian! I'm not going to say who but boy won't that be one hell of a ending ^_^
Then season 7 which I think is full of hidden messages and stuff. I didn't get it, but I'm willing to buy it later on just to figure out how and why things went the way it did.
It's a fun season all due to Andrew ^-^ Oh and Nathan Fillion as the villian....god was he creepy.

You need to see 6 and 7 for four reasons: 1) You should see the entire Buffy saga because you just should. You've come this far, you can't quit now. That would be 44 episodes of BUFFY you haven't seen. 44 is a lot to deprive yourself of. They bothered to make 'em, you should see them. 2) You must suffer as we have. We had to sit through them, now you have to. It's like a rite of passage. 3) You should form your own opinion. You can't do that without seeing them. You might love them, but you'll never know unless you see them. 4) "Once More with Feeling"

^ What they said!
Although I do agree with you on David Boreanaz. There's just something lacking...Angel can be a fantastic character but I've never quite shared the obsession that some people have with him.
But Andrew... you have to watch Seasons 6 & 7 for the wonder that is Andrew.

Are you basing that on the first four eps or have you seen more since then? I still say persevere.

I don't dislike DB, I just don't like him much. I must be one of the few who felt Buffy should stop playing with Angel simply because it could go nowhere, unless she fancied becoming a vamp.
I'm gonna rent most of the first season of Angel (my Blockbuster only rents S1) after I buy Buffy S4 because of the crossovers, so I'll let you know if I'm still ho-hum on Angel after that.
Givin' it a chance Chrisisall

Once Season 1 of ANGEL gets cookin' and the Fang Gang starts to form it gets a lot better. And personally I think S2 is excellent. Even if you aren't that crazy about DB, you may get into some of the supporting characters. Just my 2 cents.
And hey, man, Buffy wasn't "playing" with Angel. He's the love of her life. I know those two crazy kids could work it out if they'd just give it a chance :)

I hated Buffy and Angel together and I especially thought Angel was kind of useless. But then I really loved Angel the Series. Angel developed a personality that didn't involve angsty arguments with Buffy.
And Angel season 2. Gah.... love love love love love love. Now THAT is how I like my tragic love-hate relationships. And all those flashbacks. Mmm... hot vampire lovin.

I don't know where you are buying your sets, but I have all the Buffy and Angel sets and I've never paid more than $48 for any of them. I usually get them from amazon. Just FYI if you are paying $60 per.

I think you will love Angel. Because, like Buffy, it is an ensemble. The additions of Wesley and Fred were masterstrokes IMO. The cast gives great performances and solid storytelling throughout the series. Highly recommended!
Also, don't give up on Buffy after S5 (which is one of the weakest of the series IMO). You may agree with some of the other people here that did not like S6&7. But you may agree with those of us that enjoyed S7 and loved S6. Don't let others make that decision for you. See it and judge for yourself, I bet you just might like it. Let us know.

No kidding! Buffy & Angel sets are actually some of the cheapest. Especially when you consider HBO and Showtime series which can run up to $90 and they have much fewer episodes. The expense of Farscape is INSANE, and I've also seen shows like Alias and the X-Files going for at least $10-15 more than a Buffyverse set.
Buying any DVDs in-store can get very pricey, but Amazon seems to always be offering sales for BtVS and AtS (especially went you buy more than one set at a time). I've bought a lot of sets used, but the quality can be iffy. My used BtVS 3 set came crushed into a couple of pieces, but the DVDs were just fine.
You also just need to pay attention to advertising. Target had a one-week only sale for Buffy s7 (and a few other shows) for $17.99. BestBuy does specials every once and a while too.

I would say you should give 'Angel' a proper chance, as it really is an ensemble show. Angel develops into a good character during it, anyway.
I consider season 1 of 'Angel' to be fairly mediocre for the most part, but once season 2 starts.. WOW. From there until the end of season 5 is just a rollercoaster ride. I think it's a stronger show than 'Buffy', in the end.
As for 'Buffy'.. many (well, a few) people consider season 6 to be one of the strongest seasons. You should give the last two seasons a try, as there are at least a few standout episodes between them. Plus, there are some crossovers with 'Angel'.
Although maybe it would be a better idea to finish off 'Buffy' and then move on to 'Angel'.
But that's not necessary, I guess. I find it tends to kill the flow of it when you're constantly alternating shows, though.

Nah - then you miss out on some excellent cross show double bill type things that really should be watched in sequence.

Hey everyone! I usually try to respond to each of y'all individually, but I'm short on time. I much appreciate your imput, and must now say I have my hot little hands on season 4, I had to sell my soul, and some of my most longest held comics, but I got it.($48 including tax from Circuit City, captaincdc!)
I love the note from Joss in it! So cool that he would think of the fans that way.
Off to college!

...I usually buy them from Walmart or Best Buy. *laughs* dear god. I'll have to check them out from Amazon.com or someplace online that'll have it cheap. Pooo 48? Lucky...the cheapest I can find outside of stores is around $50-55 depending on the season and sale. But still, it's practically $60

If I could use my credit card for used dvds, I probably would've done so buy now.

After Season 2, good luck getting the show out of your head. You'll rush out and buy 'em all up - even if it means going bankrupt.

I'm glad to see you've stuck with it!
Once you've seen all the seasons (including Angel)and fallen in love with all of them of course, you can then proclaim yourself a Whedonite.
And don't you want that title??? Well don't you?? lol

Now that's an interesting point - a couple of us have been discussing this lately: how can you call yourself a true fan of Joss if you never paid attention to Buffy/Angel or, worse, "don't care for them."
Just curious...

Nah, it's cool. Buy Season Five, then after that you can save for the trade paperback of Joss' Astonishing X-Men run. You may not like the X-Men but you may like these stories written by Joss in which the characters just happen to be the X-Men.

Me too. Am sure it helps to know the (incredibly long and complicated) history of the X-Men but the comic's a good stand-alone read.

Gee, I dunno about y'all, but I got a brand new Buffy Season 7 DVD set for $17.77.
Thank goodness for Target and after-Thanksgiving sales.
Considering that Joss long considers Kitty Pryde to be an influential character, I think Astonishing X-Men is well worth picking up. Besides, it's more Joss and one can never have too much Joss in a day.
