Since we're all just killing time until the BDM, maybe a new poll is just what we need.

What is your favorite soundtrack (movie or series)? Who composed it: John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Michael Kamen, Tangerine Dream? Why do you like it?

I'll start with the soundtrack to Edge of Darkness by Michael Kamen and Eric Clapton. The best of their collaborative works (Rush, Lethal Weapon, etc.).

I have to agree with Placidity. The 20th Century Fox Fanfare is the best out there, and the Imperial March is incredible.

Also, I must add Lord of the Rings, Howard Shore. Phenomenal.
Last of the Mohicans (who did it? Can't remember off the top of my head.)

Braveheart, Mission Impossible (I enjoyed the soundtrack so much more than the movie)

Pretty much everything by Danny Elfman (I am a huge fan.)
I could go on and on. I love movie soundtracks.

My favourites are vidoegame soundtracks actually.

Metal Gear Soldi 3, actually composed by Harry Gregson Williams (hollywood composer of Enemy of the State).

It has some techno beats in it, while it doesnt feel techno, all while remaining cinematic and getting some pretty epic themes..

Most definitely Gladiator by Hans Zimmer. The 'More music from Gladiator' cd is just awesome.

And considering the entire theme of Pirates of the Carribean (sp?) was borrowed from Gladiator that's pretty good too.

It turns out Hans Zimmer did the score of loads of my favourite films (including The Lion King and Muppet Treasure Island :) ).

Ooh, I forgot both Gladiator and Pirates. I put on Pirates when I'm cleaning because it's constantly in motion (rather like the movie.) It's good to clean to. That and Benny Goodman.

Zimmer's another fantastic composer.

I totally agree with Daikath. Nobuo Uemetsu is a genius. My favorite of his is FF6, although the Red Wings theme from FF4 deserves an honorable mention.

As for movies, my tastes are the same as Serenity's. John Williams, Howard Shore and Danny Elfman reign supreme.

I had Last of the Mohicans on tape (this was back before I owned a CD player.) I wore that sucker out. Had to buy the CD to replace it.

Also, the first Jurassic Park movie. (That was John W., right?)

Ath-that's right, I taught you well!

And on that note, I just HAD to put in my Ep. 1 soundtrack. Hearing the Star Wars theme at the beginning was the best part of Ep. 3. Gives you chills.

the Long Good Friday (1980); Francis Monkman, who did only one other movie, the Innocent (1985)

One False Move (1992); Peter Haycock & Derek Holt, each of whom did only one other movie

These are both noir, a film style that seems to leave almost all the colour in the soundtrack.

John Williams did not compose the 20th Century Fox Fanfare. That was composed by Alfred Newman in the 1930s. Williams did compose the main Star Wars Fanfare, as well as all other music in the Star Wars films, except for the "Jedi Rocks" thing in the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi.

Alfred Newman, in case you are wondering, is the father of David Newman, who is, of course, composing the score for "Serenity."

I have a huge soundtrack collection. It's like 80-90% of my CDs & tapes ('cause I've been collecting since the 80s, and I'm not gonna spend money on an album that I already bought once).

DragonHeart, by Randy Edelman.
Escaflowne: Over The Sky, by Yoko Kanno.
BtVS: Once More With Feeling, by Joss Whedon.
The Muppet Show: 25th Anniversary Collection, by various.
Earth Final Conflict, by Mickey Erbe & Maribeth Solomon.
(Lousy show, great music.)

John Williams' "Raiders March" (from Raiders of the Lost Ark.)
Jerry Goldsmith's "Remus" (from Star Trek Nemesis).
James Horner's "The Machine Age" (from Bicentennial Man).
Dennis McCarthy's soft-rock single version of the "Deep Space Nine" theme (from DS9, natch).
Alex Lifeson's "March of the High Guard" (from Andromeda, as the S1 theme [a.k.a., "the march of 1,000 electric guitars"]).
Dunno who wrote it, but "No Good Deed" (from Wicked).

Hrm . . .wierd as it may be, I loved The Nighmare Before Christmas. It was directed by Tim Burton, and the soundtrack was by Danny Elfman. I love that combo . . .anything that is created by those two rock. Can't wait for Willy Wonka.

Hi folks - I got your soundtracks right here! Most of the ones mentioned above by the biggies (Elfman, Willams, Mancini, Howard, Shore, Goldsmith) and some not so biggie but real good (Klaus Badelt - did Pirates and Time Machine, which is one of my favorite, most underrated scores). Bernard Herrman of Pyscho fame doing Mysterious Island. The 20th Century fanfare? It's in there!
And even better (I feel like a used car salesman... sheesh!) even better, 200 songs intercut with 75 Firefly lines of dialogue, "I can kill you with my brain..." and many others. I've also added many scores from some popular scifi tv, like Andromeda, SG-1, Earth Above and Below, and the latest Galactica. Where? Here:

It always interests me when they do that. . . .have one voice for the acting and another for the singing. I think they did that in My Fair Lady too. Had Julie Andrews' voice dubbed for the songs.

Dude, I had that entire soundtrack memorized by the time I was 11.

For orchestral soundtracks, I like anything by either Danny Elfman or Thomas Newman. The standard John William's applies, but the other two guys are just incredible. I love Elfman because he's so bizarre and out there. His BATMAN theme is the best superhero score out there, next to William's SUPERMAN theme. The opening themes to BETTLEJUICE is so insane that you can't help but feel swept up in it. It's like Bernard Hermann on acid. And his scores for EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and NIGHTMARE are some of most heartbreaking themes you'd ever hear.

As for Thomas Newman, he has my undying allegiance because of two movies. AMERICAN BEAUTY and FINDING NEMO. I believe that if you took out the music for each of those flicks, they would be severely poorer films without it. It's the most sweet, tender and emotional scores anyone could ever hope to hear in their lifetimes. I always maintained that the real reason that FINDING NEMO was the pinnacle of Pixar's work was because they finally got rid of that hack Randy Newman (who I think is a better songwriter than a composer) and replaced him with Thomas. You know how William's loves his strings? Well Thomas can take a xylophone and all sorts of percussion instruments and bring them all together into a beat symphony that's just priceless. And his signature pan flutes that's just like paint coming down a wall just makes his stuff so identifiable.

And of course, there are the classic film composers. Bernie Hermann is definitly the best film compser who ever lived. One merely has to take a look at his resume and know that it isn't an outlandish statement. Also, there's the iconic zither score for the classic noir thriller THE THIRD MAN. Without it, that great moment where the cat brushes up against Harry Lime's feet and the streetlight reveals Orson Welles would just fall flat.

As for compilation soundtracks, I think the soundtrack to GARDEN STATE is without a doubt one of the best soundtracks of the last decade. Every sone in that movie fit the film like a glove, and the soundtrack in itself on a CD is perfect. How good is it? When I'm listening to it in my car, I never skip ahead.

I like how you think, Reginaroadie.
And I agree with everything you wrote. I recently saw Garden State. It was a really interesting movie. I'm not one for compilation soundtrack myself, but I did find myself paying alot of attention to the music in that movie.

And as for Nightmare and Danny Elfman-I think I always thought he did both. A friend had the CD and I remember it listing justDanny Elfman for Jack, but I could be wrong. Anybody know for certain?

Actually, Burton did not direct "The Nightmare Before Christmas." He produced the film and wrote the story it was based on. Animation director Henry Selick directed the film. Similarly, Burton is writing and producing "The Corpse Bride" coming this fall, but not directing. Burton is just not an animation director. Both movies are very much from his mind, however.

Danny Elfmann did sing the part of Jack Skellington, but Chris Sarandon (Prince Humperdinck from "The Princess Bride") gave him his speaking voice.

Great movie, though, with great songs and music. Interestingly enough, Disney was afraid that it was too dark and distanced themselves from it, releasing it under their Touchstone division. For years they wanted nothing to do with it. About 5 years ago, however, it finally occured to them that it is a classic, and they have fully embraced it. At Disneyland the Haunted Mansion is converted every Christmas to the Haunted Holiday Mansion, featuring "The Nightmare Before Christmas" characters. Lots of merchandise is also now available. It's funny what a few years can do to add perspective to greatness.

I know. It always galls me that some people consider NIGHTMARE to be a cult film. I think it's one of the most delightful and perfect kids movies ever made. Every kid should have this movie in their DVD collection next to any Miyazaki film.

And actually, of all the films that are coming out around the same time SERENITY is, I think CORPSE BRIDE is the biggest threat. I mean, you got Burton and Depp, hot off the success of WILLY WONKA. And it brings up memories of NIGHTMARE, which is up there with all the Pixar stuff. Everyone and their grandmother would be wanting to see this flick.

What do you guys think? Does CORPSE BRIDE pose a threat?

Kudos for those who recognized Bernard Herrman and "Last of Mohicans". Another that definitely deserves mention is "The Sting" - Marvin Hamilisch channelling Scott Joplin. Also, the soundtrack for "American Graffitti" Of course, both of these are great use of other folks music - Tarentino anyone? - but still great stuff.

Also love the music in "The Godfather" and "The Searchers"

See how I'm not punching him, I think I've grown!

So much goodness already mentioned but my recent favorite pop soundtrack is from "Cursed" - that's the one I play when I need to get energized.

Old favorite not mentioned is the soundtrack to "The Man Without a Face". I'm too lazy to go and check but I think it was done by one of the Johns...

Basil Poledouris for Conan The Barbarian... the music carries the first 15 minutes of the movie.

Danny Elfman - Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas... I love Jack's Lament

Alan Silvestri - Predator 1&2

Jerry Goldsmith - Alien
James Horner - Aliens

Vangelis - Bladerunner

For an anime series the music from the original Captain Harlock: Space Pirate tv series from 1978-79... also the songs from the series too.

Several MS-Gundam series have some great music and songs.

Someone mentioned Tangerine Dream who did the music for the US theatrical release of Ridley Scott's Legend, the dvd has both the original European version with music by Jerry Goldsmith and US version. Check it out!

That's what it was: I've seen(and heard) both versions of Legend. The UK version was the one I prefered, I believe. But I knew Tangerine Dream was in there somewhere.

Also several of the James Bond films... You Only Live Twice, Live and Let Die, GOldfinger, Lots of good John Barry music. I have all of the old Bond soundtracks on cassette... have to replace them with cds... none of the new ones with Brosnan yet... I even have Casino Royale which is good too.

No credit card, and finite money anyway. Appleseed I could probably find in stores (as I found the DVD on a bargain rack ['cause who'd pay full price for a foreign film?]) Gundam Seed has cool music, but I'm mainly a Two-Mix fan.

I am a soundtrack geek. here we go:

Randy Edelman - Dragonheart definately a fun one, but I admit I haven't seen the movie.

Brian Tyler - Children of Dune Brilliant. Love the Thematics.

Hans Zimmer - The Rock, Crimson Tide - It's a pity his themes have been ripped for everything, like Pirates (which was an awesome soundtrack) and countless trailers and other lesser-known action movies.

Howard Shore - Lord of the Rings Trilogy though I'm not terribly impressed with most of his other work. Some, not most.

Philip Glass - The 'Qatsi' Series Incredible composer and musician. Nobody writes like he does (which is both good and bad)

John Williams - Jurrassic Park His best soundtrack, in my opinion. yes, I love Star Wars too, I just have a soft spot for that theme.

All the people involved in the musical arrangement and composition for Moulin Rouge (too many to mention) Best musical arrangement ever.

Nobuo Uematsu - Everything Another musical genius. Hasn't done a movie yet, but is scoring Advent Children coming later this year.

Don Davis - Matrix Again, very original. He did some fantastic things with the orchestra to get the perfect effects. Nice use of choral work too, but he can't compare on that plain with:

Danny Elfman - Nightmare, Batman and a load of other incredible scores. He is the amazing of amazings.

Whoever mentioned Klaus Badelt and The Time Machine-I forgot how fantastic that soundtrack was! I'm listening to scifiradio.net (it rocks by the way) and they just played godspeed . I got chills. I remember I wasn't all that impressed with the movie, but the music was great.

It's been added to my list of soundtracks to buy.

Hmmmm, no one has mentioned Ryosuke Takahashi. I love his soundtrack for Wild Palms (if anyone remembers that mini-series) and Wings of Honneamise.

Also the soundtrack for La Femme Nikita. Ithink it's by Serra(?).

SamuraiX47, you mentioned the MS Gundam soundtracks. Remember the ending for the third original MS Gundam movie when Amuro is floating towards the others? Gives me chills...

Wow I can't beleive this! LadyHawke was the 1st soundtrack I ever bought and I totally wore the tape out. And Willow cd was the 1st thing I ever bought online! I love the carnivale music thats played at the very end.
By the way I think that Willow mirrors the Lord of the Rings in sooo many ways and is in fact the supeior story.
