Being from Atlanta, I was thrilled for London as their name was read as the 2012 host city. And then today, I wake up to the terrible news.

being a londoner wasn't thrilled about the olympics, but nmighty shocked about today. one place that was hit is where i'm due to start work soon. so it all sends shivers. been frantically texting/calling friends in central london, see if they're all ok.

It's scary for sure. More and more news coming in, explosions and the like. Wish there was a TV so I could get more of the reports.

Where I work, it's a Ministry Of Defence place, so the security rating has gone up and they've closed the gates.

I am very sad, London is my home (albeit an absent one), I was born and grew up there and moved away very recently, it is very sad. A couple of my friends had a close call but it all sucks.

I wonder why it didn't happen before the Olympic vote.

I used to work right by Russell Square so got lots of friends/work colleagues in the heart of it. They're all OK, but obviously a bit scary being there when you can hear the sirens, explosions etc.

BTW, someone's commented on the UB that the police block mobile signals as they can be used as triggers, so don't panic if you can't get through on someone's mobile.

The prime minister has just spoken, clearly shookup as are the rest of us, he will be returning to london in the next couple of hours and then his plans are to return to the G8 summit later this evening.

Hopes & wishes to all who have been stuck in this tragic events, and it is not just down to London, Swindon trains have been stopped & MOD sites are not letting visitors entrance to the sites.

Eastern Intelligence experts have said Al-Quida, but as with anything, it`s easy to put the blame to someone or group of people - similar to that of the IRA in the past, if a bomb went off, it was always thought of another IRA Bomb, we need to wait until the full intellegences sources have come together and gathered more evidence.

The latest news is that the G8 countries & Europe have stepped up their security on their public transportation & even New York has stepped up it`s policing of train stations too (Source Sky News/CNN)

The rumours are al qaeda but that is such an easy response and they have never been known for their self-control - believe it or not this could have been worse. 200 people died in Madrid - this wasn't designed to kill hundreds or there would be far more deaths (3 confirmed so far)

The timing is weird, the G8 was yesterday - an attack then might have delayed the summit and stopped the London Olympics. Be grateful for small mercies I suppose.

This looks like more of a disruption attack than a killing one. Makes me think it's not Al Qaeda, but I'm probably wrong about that.

I can't believe that, there have never been anti-Capitalists that mad, that is too much. The IRA might think it makes some sense because the debate is now doomed - Paisley is the lead negotiator now Trimble has gone. Perhaps some of the 'real' IRA have decided to return to the violence - it would be pretty stupid though but it is whoever did it.

The timing of the bombs points to G8 which suggests an international terrorist organisation. Given that to have any credibility, they'd have to announce themselves pretty much simultaneously with the attacks, I'd have expected to have heard some claim by now. So it's most probably Al-Qaeda.

I suppose we should be grateful that the fatalities aren't in the hundreds as they were in Madrid or the thousands as they were in 9/11. But I'm more depressed by the prospect of our government becoming even more authoritarian. There's no point beating these people if we have to give up our freedom to do so.

Bonus marks to my mother for not realising that I'd have liked a phone call to say she was okay when she was travelling from Liverpool Street along the tubes at pretty much the same time the bombs went off. Managed to track her down at the course she was attending eventually.

London's a tough city. We've had bombing campaigns waged against us for decades and still kept our head held high. We'll weather this storm too. Thoughts and hopes to all those directly caught up in it.

One thing really got me about this.

My friend was supposed to be a train leaving from King's Cross at the time of the KC explosion. She takes that journey every day, at the same time, without fail, to get to her university (she's a trainee nurse).

Today, she overslept. The only time in her entire time at university she's overslept. That faulty alarm clock may just have saved her life.

Very true SW, London will be fine in a couple of weeks. My Dad was caught in an IRA blast in the 80s and went back to work the next day - tough bunch. The worst thing is not being able to get through to people, hoping everyone is alright.

Like you hinted at, this will give Blair carte blanche to bring in the ID cards though. Gorram it! I just hope none of the bombers are involved with Iran otherwise another disgusting war will be on the cards.

I have friends/former colleagues that work in London. There's a couple that I can't get hold of, I'm trying to be positive and blaming the clogged up networks but i'm really worried, one in particular is a nurse at Great Ormond St (just off Russell Square) who travels to work by bus and was supposed to be there this morning and hasn't showed up yet.

I'm praying cos there's nothing else I can do.

I'm with those who've said there's something fishy about this. It doesn't seem like Al Qaeda's style. An organized-but-carefully-limited strike like this is a plea for attention (as folks have said, likely no lasting economic fallout, and surprisingly few casualties), but AQ are the only ones to claim credit.

The only possible long-term effect would be to make Al Qaeda's operations harder on account of boosted security and p*ssed off Englishmen. I'd think they'd've learned that lesson (well, bar the angry English) with the US.

That is true, if she is a nurse she may be on the ground helping out. Easier said than done but try not to worry too much.

London is a huge place and only a tiny proportion of people will be involved directly - apart from the fall-out with tube closures (the Central Line derailment was bad enough, Christ knows what this will be like. My heart goes to everyone who will experience that chaos.)

They've been under sustained attack now for 4 years; previously they've been under the cover of "collatoral damage", knowing that they were unlikely to be struck by missiles if they hid in villages with civilians. That's gone out of the window now (for better or worse).

If this was a "We're still here" stunt, it might yet back fire. They changed the world on 9/11, horrified in Bali and Madrid. But what happened today wasn't the stuff of nightmares that we'd previously discussed: dirty bombs, chemical warfare, mass suicide bombings. We've had twenty five years of bombs in buildings, railway stations, etc, etc. The capital has been designed to resist such attacks for decades.

This won't change London and that may prove to be a tactical blunder on their part.

Em's right (my turn to agree with her ) - the odds are anyone we know are just caught up in the overall disruption. Other than the already stated cases of known involvement, of course. I'll keep hoping for the best for all of them.

Almost certainly. I mean, how often does a terrorist attack like this actually make the victims do what the terrorists want, anyway? It always strengthens their resolve against their attackers. Every time. That's one of the things that makes these sort of attacks so pointless. It'll just make us more determined to blast the living hell out of them. How does it help their cause?

Thursday 7th July 2005 at 12.05pm

Incident in London today

All patients in Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) are safe
following the incidents in London this morning. All Staff and families
have been advised not to leave the premises until the hospital receives
a clear update from the police.

GOSH does not have an accident and emergency unit but we are ready to
admit patients referred to us from other hospitals as required. We
have introduced well- established continguency procedures and are on
standby along with the rest of NHS to treat and receive any admissions
if required.

All elective admissions and surgery have been cancelled for today.
Families are currently being notified. All landline and mobile phone
services have also been disrupted.

We do not have any further information at present but will provide
updates if we have more news.

my mum used to work in London whenthe IRA was pretty rife. But ... with them, she did mention, that they did send coded warnings to the police and whoever. so there was some amount of warnings about that. this .. this was just, horrific.

Which brings a question to mind. Do thunderstorms bother any of you - have you thinking "Bomb!" before "oh... thunder."

I ask, because a friend of mine grew up in Beirut during the war. She's Armenian, so wasn't on either side, but stuck in the middle. To this day, thunderstorms make her twitch and she doesn't attend fireworks displays on the 4th or ever.

I'm Northern Irish, and while thunderstorms and fireworks don't bother me, a car-backfiring or similar loud bangs still makes me worry for a second. And I didn't even grow up in the worst of the troubles.

I'm so thankful that all my English uni friends are outside the capital right now. Much love to all those of you who were affected personally, in whatever way.

I think warnings are basically intended to allow bombs to go off while reducing the potential death toll by allowing for evacuation, or at least a quicker response. Provided the warning is given early enough, that is.

Attacks like this, with nor warning at all, are only for one thing, or rather four: chaos, panic, destruction and death.
