I know there have probably been a lot of threads as to this general point, but I wanted to put it all together.
I am actually surprising myself with what I'm going to say here - up until recently I would have said Buffy every time, but I have to say -
DARK ANGEL ROCKS! It is actually as good as Firefly.
I was just wondering what everyone else's favourite is.

I adore SportsNight. I love Aaron Sorkin's writing, the pace, the characters, the interactions. It is only a marginal second in my book to Firefly.

Fox isn't the only network with bastard programmers who should go to the special hell.

That question is too tough for me. There are shows I think were better done than Firefly, but I just don't LOVE them as much -- nowhere's near. Once you exclude Firefly, there are a buncha shows I like. Here are two that prolly ain't on anyone else's list:

Richard Boone Theatre
Scene of the Crime

Repertory theatre companies, which means, week to week, they had the same cast playing different characters in unrelated stories.

I like and regularly watch (or Tivo) several current shows.

The new "Battlestar Galactia" is the best Sci-Fi show currently on TV, and one of the best drama's period!

"The Inside" is interesting. Tim Minear has taken a formula show, and turned it on it's ear. Who does that remind us off? Though typically, it sounds like FOX will cancel it before it has time to build an audience.

"The 4400". An interesting show, though as the series continues, it seems to be losing it's edge. I haven't given up on it yet, but it's beginning to resemble a soap opera more than a drama. Time will tell.

"House". The lead is such a brillaint but flawed character. It also has the best mix of medical drama and humor I've seen since M*A*S*H*.

"Medium". The relationship between the husband and wife is the closest to a real married couple I've seen on tv since Zoe and Wash. They don't always get along, but they protect each other, and their family comes first.

"The Closer". Kira Sedwick is so un-hollywood, and her character is refreshingly unique for television. She's kinda like a female Columbo. People tend underestimate her because of her appearance and personality, but she's much smarter than first impressions might lead you to believe. In fact, she far smarter than the men she works with. If you ever find yourself sitting across from her in an interogation room, you might as well confess!

Of shows that got cancelled, a few stand out for me.

I also would have liked to see more "Dark Angel". Two more seasons of "Angel" would have been great! "Space Above and Beyond" deserved a longer run, and "Wonderfalls" early demise is further proof that there is no intelligent life at FOX!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

My all time favorite show is Angel. Perfectly imperfect characters, perfect funny-yet-sad writing, perfectly dark tone.

Other contenders:

Farscape (I'm 1/4 through season 3 right now)

Veronica Mars (just watched this, and it's amazing)

There are other shows I like, even love. But Angel really does surpass them all.

Years ago when Farscape was originally airing I wouldnt give it the time of day, I mean muppets in space...pfft!

Relatively recently though I came across all 4 seasons at Big W and they were really cheap and seeing as though I was hankering for something, anything sci fi I snapped them up. What I will say is that if Farscape is watched contiguously IT ROCKS! If you just watch an episode a week or here and there its easy to become uninterested. Thats the beauty of DVD sets, the story arc is much easier to follow.

I have bad taste, but am honest, so follows is a list of all the programs that i have been avid followers of. These are shows that have shaped me, they are not in a particular order, but i have put indications and stuff.

TEENAGE MUTANT HERO TURTLES. Now, haven't seen an episode of the original for years now, since i was a little'un, and i have no intention to do so, as it will no doubt ruin my affection. This is the show that shaped me as i grew, it was probably were i first got my taste for sci-fi. And the first fella who tries to argue that a show about giant turtles with super strength isn't sci-fi will recieve a beating.

BUFFY. Now i love Buffy, i just do. Buffy was something that i grew through, from the age of about 10. I watched it with my Dad, we bonded. It's got good character arcs, they don't always make sense sure, but it's cool. It is funny and intelligent and it basically will always be a love of mine. I just wish i could afford to buy the whole lot on DVD.

SLIDERS. Now i haven't seen all of sliders. Poss the last half of the last series i missed. It is regularly slated as being stupid, lifeless and a show that in no way reached it's potential. Doesn't matter, i liked it.

ALIAS. Used to love. Not so much any more, but still gd.

XENA. Amazonian women in tight animal clothign kicking ass. Badly scripted it may have been, badly acted, badly concieved. Brilliantly tounge in cheek though. If this isn't the reason i was ready for buffy, i don't know what was.

ANGEL. It's good, it's dark, it is physically and pyhcologically very painful to watch. Not always particularly brilliant, but certainly good.

24. Not seen the new season, sure it'll be gd tho. I like 24, it's fast paced and it's clever. Not funny tho, shame really, almost perfect, but not quite.

CHARMED. Stupid, idiotic, ridiculous, pointless, blatent rip-off of buffy. Fg brilliant though.

There's so many more but i can't think of them all, i'm sure i'll add.

I'm a huge fan of intelligent dialogue and a rich storyline.. I love watching any series that i get interested in only in chronological order. So with all that said, my favorites:

Firefly,
Farscape,
Angel,
Buffy.

In a seperate category, Family Guy is the best comedy/cartoon ever done in my opinion. Fantastic writing, heh.

As for Farscape.. as someone else mentioned above, you really have to watch Farscape in sequence. I remember when I first saw episodes on tv, and I thought it was uninteresting. But after having watched all 4 seasons and the miniseries in order, I've placed Farscape as a very close second to Firefly on my favorites. Any fans of drama/scifi should give Farscape a chance.

My picks are not based on "great television" or anything, they are just shows that I liked. Plus, I cannot pick just one.

Canceled shows (in no particular order)
Garfield and friends - was my favorite comic strip for a long while
Ducktales - I even liked the movie
TMNT - I admit, I had a few of the toys too. Actually, I think I still do...

hmm... lots of cartoons here....

Angel - only after I saw Firefly.
Friends - the show certainly did run it's course and was clearly ready to end, but I still miss it sometimes....
M*A*S*H - one of the greatest shows ever, in my opinion.
Monday Night Football - sigh........ it just seems wrong not to have it anymore.
Futurama - "I'm going to catch her cheating on ME. With ME." "Way to go! That's thinking like a man!".

Shows currently on TV (in no particular order)

Good Eats - cooking shows count, right?
Desperate Housewives - It is really quirky and interesting. I cannot explain why I like it, I just do.
The Simpsons - has lost some luster, but still pretty funny.

Animaniacs: I still think this is the greatest cartoon ever created, by far. And the 2nd greatest TV show ever (Firefly being first).

Star Trek - Deep Space Nine: I went from just liking Star Trek during Next Generation to obsessed with Star Trek because of this show. And then Voyager and Enterprise happened and now I'm back to just liking Star Trek.

I've just discovered the 4400 - it's actually really good. It also reminded me a bit of Taken - an amazing show (though it's more of a series of TV films - I don't get it really but it's great!)

I would have to agree with your assessment of Babylon 5. I myself was also entirely obsessed with it, and to this day I refuse to give up my VHS of what episodes I did capture. I need to start collecting the DVDs.

I found some of my own favorites in the rest of your list and would add Quantum Leap.

Is anyone else saddened by the fact that a lot of the series we loved were cut off in their early years?

I also enjoyed Quantum Leap but it was a show I could dip in and out of unlike "Babylon 5" with its' arc and story plotting, missing an episode was like an amputation without anaesthetic.

As for the practice of shows getting cancelled before they could properly find their feet the worst offender seems to have been Fox. I still lament the loss of:

Strange Luck
Crusade
American Gothic
Harsh Realm
The Visitor
Space: Above and Beyond

to mention but a few. I had to chuckle at your crush on Patrick Duffy of Dallas fame and his role in Man From Atlantis, I always thought he swam like a Mermaid (or should that be Merman?). My earliest crush like that was on James Drury from "The Virginian". Sigh.

* Charlie Jade ROCKS! (I didn't realize it wasn't airing in the US)
* Battlestar Galactica is the best Sci Fi series in years
* Space Above and Beyond had some good moments (too bad Space in Canada doesn't show it)
* I loved Jeremiah (Space just finished and has re-started it again)
* I only enjoyed Farscape after it had ended, but the final season and the miniseries (Peacekeeper wars) is top notch.
* I am always entertained by Stargate SG1
* The first few seasons of West Wing were really good

I still have the pilot (which absolutly rocks) on VHS that I bought in the late eighties! If it came out on dvd I would buy the whole series, even though many of the eps were silly. I also have the Marvel comics adaption and short-lived comic series. Fred Karlin did great music for the TV series, as well as movies like 'Westworld". I can hold my breath underwater for two minutes, and can do Patrick's 'dolphin kick' very well (but it's hard on the lower back).

I agree! There is no intelligent life at Fox.

POTENTIAL SPOILER... YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!

Ahh... always the hard questions..... I'd have to say for a while I loved 3rd season Enterprise (Hayes/MACOs) but then they killed off my fav. character. Around that time, the same actor (Stephen Culp) was also playing Webb on JAG. So I started watching that too.... until they killed off my favorite char (Webb.. aka SC). So THEN I realize they 'killed' Hayes due to his casting on a new show called Desperate Housewifes.... and I thought. Okay. Cool. I'll try to get over it.

Guess what ruttin' thing happened to his freakin' character at the end of the first season.

I tell ya.... no wonder I like Wash. It's fitting. Ya'all can just blame me! I'm jinxed.

That said... I liked Enterprise. I liked JAG. I even liked DH. These days I find myself watching Joey & Nip/Tuck. At least it's funny and there's no chance I'm going to like the main character on it and he/she will die.

I'm glad to see there are some fans of 24 here. I made two blog posts out of this, but I'm just going to restate it.

24 is the most addictive thing on tv. As a visual experience, this is probably the eqivalent of cocaine. Constantly moving forward, and very rarely taking a breather, puts you on the edge of the first minute and with each hour slowly notches it up until the very end where sometimes it literally explodes. "DAY 1: 11PM-12AM" is, IMHO, the most riveting hour of suspense ever made. Shootouts that outdo Peckinpah and Woo and suspense that would make Hitchcock proud. But it's more than just an action series. I read somewhere that 24 has taken the mantle of THE X-FILES in that it taps into societies fears and turns them into entertainment.

Also, in no way, shape or form does anyone match Keifer Sutherland in the BAMF (Bad Ass Mother Fucker) department. Mal Reynolds still has things to lose. Jack Bauer, on the other hand, has nothing. And when your protagonist has nothing left to lose, he is more dangerous than the bad guys.

I'm surprised some people on here don't like it. Has plenty of Whedon vets on it both in front of and behind the camera, so should be a fan fave by default.

As for the lack of humor on it, it's there, but it's understated. Each season has what I like to call a black humor moment. In Day 1, it was at 6PM with the Palmer's sitting down at the table for dinner. The tension is so thick that any interruption is funny. And in Day 2, when they're escorting Nina to the plane in the armored car, Nina looks over to the other guy and goes "How you doing, Mike?" As if they're in the break room getting coffee. And in Day's 3 and 4, Chloe's attitude is very acerbic. She's like a office temp version of Cordelia or Jayne. Also, in Day 3, in the deleted scenes, there's more of Dave Herman's character Dalton that shows that there would have been some funnier moments in the show.

Mind you, when you're on the edge of your seat and your heart feels like it's in a vice, sudden humor would seem inappropriate.

The only show that I've ever been as passionate about as much as I am about Firefly is Macross, and I was in middle school when I got to see this. Sure, they butchered it so they could air it in that Robotech series, but I completely fell for the storyline, the characters, the mech designs, the Zentradei...all of it! I've enjoyed other shows, but never got as interested in them, and figured there'd never be another Macross for me...until now. Thank God for Firefly!

Favourite non-Firefly show:
InuYasha: Shows are made by the bad guys, and InuYasha has not one, but four of the most awesome, compelling, and downright frightening villains I've yet seen. Plus I tend to sympathize with InuYasha to a probably unhealthy degree (we're both cynical loners who were made that way by a world intent on kicking our asses hard enough to break our hearts. Only real difference is that he's got Kagome, and I'm still pinned to a metaphorical tree).

May I assume you've tracked down the Jack McKinney (a.k.a. James Luceno and Brian Daley) Robotech books? They start out as novelizations of the Robotech (and Sentinels) series, then go back (in later books) to fill in back-story and bridges. They read much smoother than the chop-job cartoon series (being text, they don't have to adhere to pre-recorded animé, so we can get Macross' Max Sterling face to face with his grown-up daughter, Southern Cross' Dana).

Yeah, I've read a few of those, and they were cool enough, but now that I can see Macross subtitled, with no re-writing to fit it into the Robotech storyline, I'm a lot happier with that. Like you say, the novels were good...but me personally, I'm so into Macross itself, being a bit of a purist, that I don't want anything touching...no talk about the Super Dimensional Fortress belonging to Zor...no battles between the Masters and the Invid...none of that.

Sadly, the sequels to Macross have all been poop...with the slight exception of Macross Plus. Everything about that series was superb, but then they just shot it all in the butt there at the end with that lack-luster ending. Oh well...can't have it all I suppose.

Honestly, I would recommend this series to anyone. If you haven't seen in, and you have some extra money, go out and buy the first season on DVD. You will NOT be disappointed).

Right now, there seems to be (IMHO)absolutely nothing on TV that's really worth watching.
However, back in the good old days when the stuff on TV actually made me smile, there was:
Daria Cynical teenager with so many ineresting opinions on people( and on life in general). Sometimes she reminded me so much of myself it was eerie.
Gargoyles One of the only Disney-related shows that actually made me go "Damn. This is really GOOD.." The characters actually had emotional depth, and the tragic elements, Shakespearan allusions and moving love-stories were such tear-jerkers it was astonishing.(Especially considering it was a cartoon)
Inuyasha Angsty, mythical, deeply complex. Like Gargoyles, it had alot of intellectual and emotional fodder, but at times it was alot darker and more shocking. The characters also managed to strike some sort of kindred chord with me, particularly Inuyasha, because he often feels so isolated and alone.
Roswell Conspiracies There's just something about this show that has me coming back to it again and again. Probably because it was my first introduction to the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre. I loved all the characters and almost cried when the show got cancelled. (By the way Cybersnark, how's the list coming along? )
Buffy My first introduction to the genius that is Joss Whedon. Buffy had surprising depth for a show with such a silly title. And it dealt with alot of real-life problems through metaphors, something which I really liked.
Dark AngelWhat can I say? I'm a sucker for flawed, quippy, butt-kicking, tough-girls?
Xena I really liked all the mythological elements in the storylines. Greek and Roman legends have always fascinated me. Plus, I've always loved the Celtic music the played at the beginning of the show.

There's Due South and Northern Exposure- oh and China Beach does anyone remember that? All are excellent 90's TV shows with quality plots and actors.

Then of course there is Buffy- I love my Blondie Bear *squeal!*

Yeah I can't pick especially when I haven't even thought of Star Trek in all it's glory!

It's a tough choice. I'll have to list a few. Starting by agreeing with Cybersnark and Blacklily:

Inuyasha. The best show still on the air on this side of the pond. (No longer airs in Japan.) This show has the perfect mix of fantasy, action, humor, romance, and excellent characters.

Futurama. Another great show axed by Fox. ("I'm having one of those things - a headache with pictures." LOL.)

Simpsons. Sheer genius. Also tackles a lot of issues other shows won't - childhood obesity for example. Plus it's just plain funny. ("I'd want to come back as a butterfly." "Why?" "Because no one suspects the butterfly!")

Veronica Mars. Joss likes it - need I say more?

Buffy/Angel. Well duh.

Yup, that's about all I can think of, though I haven't seen a lot of shows mentioned above, and now must do so.

I mentioned B5 in a sci-fi chat room years ago, and somebody jumped in with, "Babylon 5 sucks! It's just a wannabe Star Trek!" It transpired that this individual has only watched one or two episodes here and there.

This was at a time when TNT was airing B5 weekday afternoons, so I told the person to watch 5 episodes in a row.

A week later, I was gifted with, "You were right about Babylon 5! It's AMAZING! I'm gonna watch the whole thing now!"

Ahhhh, it's so nice when people listen to you.

Hmm.. Bar Firefly..

Well after Firefly comes a show I bet nobody here has ever even heard of. Heck I shouldn't even have heard of it being only 25yrs old.

Land of the Giants is still my all time favorite show. Sure the FX aren't up to today's standards but they were top of the line at the time. If you can watch a Godzilla movie for what it is you should be able to watch LotG and enjoy it too.

Obviously, being british, and growing up with this show, I love Doctor Who. I can remember being so scared by it as a little kid that I had to hide behind the sofa at the scary bits & I used to get my Mum or Dad or brother to watch it with me, it was SO SCARY!!!! The new doctor is excellent!!!! Yea!!!!

Along a Western theme (Firefly / Serenity being a scific western), I have the R1 DVD box set of "Into The West" by Spielberg. Being a Western & US History buff I LOVE this show. And being by Spielberg it is an expertly crafted piece of tv entertainment. I defy you not to be a soggy, weepy mess by the end!!!!

I also adore Without a Trace and the British equivalent, Waking the Dead. And I am a diehard fan of E.R. (I watch it with subtitles so I can decifer the US medical Jargon - you do pronounce words in a different way from us Brits!!!!)

I loved Friends, and the British comedy Coupling. And of course, Monty Python is Hi-larious!!!

But I think my all time favourite sitcom is The Good Life. It was made here in Britain in the 1970's. If you can get a hold of it, I heartily recommend it. If you're British, it is repeated so often on BBC, you'll know it already!!!

Im almsot scared to say Lost. I think only 5 people have listed it. Im surprised actually, as the first season at least really created some great Characters. This is what initially drew me to Firefly. Then again I am a Lostie, and Ill stick by it as much as Ill stick by Firefly/Serenity.

I also loved Carnivale...another show that was given the short leash and wasn't able to finish, which was sad. I wish they would bring down the almsot 100 price tag on the DVD set, but then again it was HBO!

Contenders include:

Buffy: Very little like it on television, before or since! Whedon brings to the speculative genre on TV a basic humanity that for some reason is commonly missing- the stilted performances of Gerry Anderson's Space 1999, the cheesy original Battlestar posse, the rather odd acting in the original Star Trek and the rather dull Stargate SG1/Atlantis crews. Why IS that?

Angel: Like some kind of Buffy +! Darker and less, dare I say, cheesy than its mother show, it also had a gobsmacking sense of humour. Though the plotting went down some very wierd and occasionally irritating avenues (Connor, demon Cordy) nothing could make me turn off such snappy writing, and fleshed out, truly lovable characters.

Dark Angel: I was a bit of a fantasy fascist when this came out first; sci-fi wasn't really my scene at the time! Fortunately, Jessica Alba's face proved to have a hypnotic effect, and while I was held in a trance I noticed the programme was actually pretty good. Of course, the most notable aspect of the show is its shift in tone from gritty future vision, to a simpler but also fun freak-of-the-week format, but that forms part of its appeal for me!

But overall I'd have to go for:

Doctor Who:As a small child, this was unspeakably compelling. The mysterious and ever changing figure of the Doctor gambols through time and space, flipping the bird to authority and duking the fecal matter out of all manner of alien beasts, made all the more frightening by their garish and often cheap loking appearances. Time passed, and I forgot the Good Doctor, until the BBC finally recommissioned it with a far bigger budget. From the first sight of the trailer, all the old feelings came flooding back, and I am a fan again! The new series is witty, hugely exciting and as inventive as ever it was, and most importantly, its getting legions of young fans too!

Possible future contenders:

New Battlestar Galactica: So little to do with the original they might as well have started a new franchise with this fully immersive and adult space drama.

Lost: The definition of a slow burner, but the characters are so diverse and the situations so gloriously offbeat and insidiously creepy that it could be on every week until the end of time and not get old as far as I'm concerned!

In the US it's called Good Neighbors. And I agree, it's up there. I can watch it over and over again. (Plus, a crush on Felicity Kendall never hurts.)

As to cop shows/ procedurals, I would add DaVinci's Inquest. It's a Canadian show that is terrific!!!

This is a difficult question for me to answer... My all time favorite shows would have to include:

1. Twin Peaks

2 - X in no particular order:
Carnivale (HBO)
BtVS
Deadwood (HBO)
The Daily Show with John Stewart
Spooks (The British series called MI-5 in the US)
Red Dwarf
Sports Night

And I'm sure there are others that I can't think of at the moment.
