Tonight I rented the 2nd disk of AtS S1, and I plan to enjoy it like the first one. But in all the cross-talk, it seems S4 is ghastly, can I just skip it and go straight to S5 (although that will be some time from now...) ?

Jumping around Chrisisall

If you do that, you miss out on Cordelia in a belly dance style costume (yes, she's VERY pregnant at the time); you'll miss out on our lovely Gina Torres as Jasmine. You'll miss some hot Wesley action and do you really want that?

Here's my advice: Don't allow other persons opinions or prejudices make your decisions for you. Watch it and make up your own mind. After you've made up your mind, join the cross talk.

Angel S4 was never my favourite. In no freakin' way was it ever my favourite.

But there were some great moments and some pretty decent story lines you'll want to get into. And it does tie together a few loose strands that you'll wonder about if you don't see it.

Plus... Faith. And who doesn't love Faith?

I agree, don't let other people's opinions taint your viewing. At least the first two thirds of it were really watchable.

And, hey, if you can sit through the middle of S3 Angel without screaming "Eat the gorram baby!" every few seconds, then S4 will be a breeze.

If'n you need a quick guide, these babies should do it -->

Great site, thanks. (I noticed a familiar name on the synopsis credits...)

One thing about Buffy is the severe change in tone starting around S5, but intensly around S6, But Angel seems a more consistant show, am I wrong?

Yup, that site is a labour of love, let me tell you.

Yeah, Buffy did switch tones a lot after season five which really jars sometimes, but you're right in that Angel stays somewhat more level.

Overall, I found Angel to be a more stable and constant show than Buffy was and I much preferred the finale of Angel.

I think you'll like it, keep us posted on your thoughts for the whole series (from S1 onwards), 'cause I really welcome new discussions.

Oh yeah, season 4 of Angel. You should definately watch it, even if it wasn't the best. There were some good episodes, and some major plot point you don't wanna miss.

I'd say no, don't skip it.

A lot of people--myself included--rank S4 as the worst of the five, but it seems like an equal number of fans consider it the best. There doesn't appear to be much middle ground. It's possible you'll fall into that second group, and if so, you'd be pretty sorry if you'd missed out, wouldn't you?

Plus, episode 6, "Spin the Bottle" (written and directed by Joss) absolutely should not be missed under any circumstances!! And later on in the year (ep. 20, "Sacrifice"), Jeff Ricketts trades in his blue gloves to play one of the coolest, creepiest demons ever.

Overall, the season had so many great moments that made it worth watching... which is why the bungling up of it near the end is just that much harder to take. It was so on it's way to being one of the best years of either Buffy or Angel, and instead...

Season 4 is definitely a little strange, but it is not terrible in my opinion. Skipping it will not destroy your ability to understand season 5 but it will make some things confusing (no spoilers!). I would suggest watching it. There is quite a bit of interesting stuff and some of the episodes are pretty good. Besides, how can you have a complete Angel experience without watching all the episodes?

I agree on the spoilers. Guys lay off a bit there.

I say go ahead and watch it. I'm in the crowd of it not being the best season ever. However, I still watch it when it's on tv. Angel is far better than 99% of the tv out there. Even at it's worst. So, give it a shot. You never know.

Season 4 falls short of my personal preferences, but there's enough good stuff in that season to make it worth watching. Just like Buffy Season 4 was a little limited, but that's the season that brought us Hush. Angel S4 has a lot more than one good episode, and Gina Tores is worth the viewing.

Like when the Fear Demon appeared on Buffy, actual size. I had read that in a spoiler a month prior to seeing it, and was still fallin' off my chair laffin', 'cause I didn't remember reading it.

I'm going through S4 myself these days. I'm on ep 19 or 20 right now.

I wouldn't skip any episodes much less an entire season simply because if you're into the Buffyverse then you shouldn't deprive yourself of any of it. Everybody's tastes are different. You may love S4.

IMHO Season 4's problem is that all the developments are interesting as they happen, but they promise a big payoff. And I don't feel we get paid.

But if you don't watch it, you will miss out on Faith's appearances. If you like Faith, you'll want to catch that.

The thing that works best for me in S4 is the development of Wesley. If you like that character, you must watch S4.

Just my two cents.

You definatly need to watch S4, if only for "Spin the Bottle" and the nessecary introduction to S5. I dont know how much you know about the overall plot, but if you skip S4 and go straight to S5, you will be confused as hell. You will think you're in bizzaro world.

Plus, Gina Torres as Jasmine has a whole creepy Pod People story arc at the end of the season that I loved.

Oh and Wesley. Wesleywesleywesleywesley

Again, as with JA... the woman in nine kinds of hot. There's no escaping it. (*sigh* You know, I think heterosexuality is wasted on me. I like very few men on screen).

Yes, season one gets better. A lot better. You have some great episodes coming up later in the season. 'Somnambulist', 'Expecting', 'The Ring', 'Five by Five', 'Sanctuary', 'To Shanshu in LA'.

I remember when I was watching it, I liked it, it was cool... but the moment I knew I loved it was during the finale. You'll see when you get there.

While Season 4 does not rank as my top favorite, I would suggest not skipping it. If you're watching the series to see the whole story, beginning to end, I would suggest not even skipping an episode. Skipping a season would leave you confused in the beginning of Season 5 (Take my advice since I missed the second half of Season 4). You'll also be missing changes in the characters.

And the subject of much debate.

Watch the scene at the very end where they're both crying. Watch it closely, with your finger on the pause button to go back again and again and, most importantly, with the SOUND UP.

Many schools of thought here... but the urban legend remains...

When Angel is begging Buffy not to cry, what David actually says is "Please, Sarah, please". And the editors did not catch it.

I'm sitting on the fence on this one, it's a close call.

Willow, Tara, Buffy (for the first few seasons, before she got too skinny.), Anya, Fred, Zoe, Kaylee and Inara

Some other female stars I find attractive, off the top of my head:

Watch S4. You have to if you are going to watch S5. I am one who loved S4. Everyone talks about the final few eps being a let down, but to me the metaphor works perfectly. And if you like Wesley and Fred (my 2 favorite characters of Angel), then you will want to watch for that, because they are great in S4, especially Wes.

Well, if you're happily engaged, I wouldn't say your heterosexuality is completely wasted.

The problem for women is that movies and T.V. shows are run mostly by men, so there just isn't as much eye candy for you. Whereas we can just turn on the tube, and start flipping channels and sooner rather than later, we will find a babe.

I know the ratio of hot women compared to hot men is way out of whack in favor of women. And it's unfair. Sorry.

But there are fewer universal types for women than there are among men. You can find women who don't find Brat Pitt attractive. You'd be hard-pressed to find a guy who doesn't find Eliza Dushku attractive (oh wait, bad example). Make that you'd be hard-pressed to find a guy who doesn't find, say, Kate Beckinsale attractive.

But then again you're engaged, so in the great balance of things, you're ahead of the game.

Thanks for that "Sarah" tip, I'll go check that out.

Didn't I tell you episode 8 was awesome? I don't actually buy the writer's reason for having Angel's wanting to turn back time. But I can roll with it. I don't buy his reason for destroying the gem of Amara either. But again, I can roll with it.

Still, a very moving episode and Sarah was great.

Still, a very moving episode and Sarah was great.

The reasons made pretty good sense to me. But, to each his or her own.

People have said she is unattractive with a bad personality, obviously they are wrong

Faith is enough to make straight women gay - oh, her beauty and wit and sex-appeal *sigh*

Each to their own I guess..

I just watched that scene a few times with the sound run through my Bose Acoustic Wave Machine and its volume cranked to 80--sometimes with my ear up to it, sometimes not. Sometimes with the subtitles on, sometimes not.

It sounds to me like he says "Sh, Sh, please... and then says "please" a few more times. I really don't believe there's a "Sarah" in there.

Like I said, urban myth. It was hotly debated at the time.

I finished with season 4 of Angel just a couple of nights ago. All I can say is that if season 5 gets better...I CAN'T WAIT!

Chrisisall, don't you dare skip season 4!

Angel is fast becoming one of my favorite shows ever, probably will end up in at least the top five all time.

Even the 'baby' episodes of S3?
I finished S1 and frankly, it was good, but not 'Buffy' good.

Well, you've seen the best (2&3) of Buffy, and only the first season of Angel. You gotta give the poor guy a chance.

It gets better as everyone finds their place a little more.

You have to start a new thread for S2... we'll help you through it!

Chrisisall,
I don't think it's all that surprising that Buffy's feel changed as the show went on. It was in large part about growing up and moving into the adult world, so as Buffy gained more adult responsibilities the show's feel had to change. Angel was about redemption for past mistakes. Anegl, Cordy, Doyle, Wes, Gunn, Faith, Spike, and Harmony all had things in their past to atone for. (Fred and Lorne not so much but still) So, the feel of the show would stay pretty consistent. Or that's my view anyway.

The first half of SEASON 4 is brilliant
The second half got into the wrong story
line in the fourth quarter.

The history of the writing of Season 4 without spoilers, is thus:

Charisma Carpenter (Chordy) got pregnant. Congradulations all around of course!
But, the storyline of Angel Season 4 had to change at the last minute to accommodate said pregnancy. She was originally set to be the Big Bad that season! Joss said so. So some convoluted and very bizarre plot points were created to get her the time she needed bring to the world her little bundle of joy.

So all of the things that make it a 'bad' season can be pinned on the nescessary last minute changes to the arch of the story.

Apart from that however, I think Season 4 of Angel was truly epic. It was huge. It was like an eighteen hour movie with very few stand alone episodes, and a huge arch. I liked it. It wasn't Angel Season 2, which totally freaked me out, but in that 'Oh my god I can't beleive they did that to my characters that I love, and it makes so much sense, and what great acting, but I'm really freaked out and distrurbed by how dark this is but it's also funny too.' kind of way.

Anyway. Don't skip Season 4. just keep in mind what went into composing the overarching story.

Actually S4's "Orpheus" was one of my favorite episodes in all of Angel soooo....

Whilst not one of my favourites, actually ranking bottom for me, I definitely wouldn’t say that it was a “bad season”, just not the strongest.

Having said that, it is, as many pointed out, perhaps the most experimental seasons running – with that huge arc.

It also has some very strong episodes; ‘Apocalypse, Nowish’, ‘Orpheus’, ‘Inside Out’ and ‘Home’ being amongst my favourites of the show’s five year run.

I seen so much death... I been on fields carpeted with bodies, friends and enemies - i seen men and women blown apart to messes no further from me to you. But every single ones of those people died on their feet. Fighting. Or, hell, running away - doing summat to get through...

The problem with season 4 is that it doesn't really work all that good as a whole. Many of the parts are great, but they don't necessarily make any real sense together.

Select to view spoiler:

For instance, I liked the whole "The Beast"/Rain of fire/Apocalypse thing, which led to the return of Angelus and subsequently Faith. I also liked the Jasmine arc. However, those two made little or no sense together, and it almost seemed like the writers were just making it up as they went along. If you consider the fact that Cordy was under the control of Jasmine since she came back, or at least since the memory spell in "Spin the Bottle", many of her actions and reactions to things that happen during the season seems very strange

With that said, it's still very enjoyable though, just not quite as good as some of the other seasons.

I thought that was somewhat whiny. Agree on some of the points, but some others were kinda ridiculous. I especially don't agree on the comments about S6 of Buffy and the whole Lilah thing that the reviewer for some reason goes on about for half a page.
