I've seen some of the good threads about people's favourite firefly moments - funniest, etc. - but, as a show with a few couples / romances, I was wondering, what are people's favourite romantic moments?

(Can you tell I went to a wedding last weekend?! And this weekend I have to work to make up for the time off, so I'm looking for cheerful stuff to read about.)

My favourite moment is with Zoe and Wash, of course: the conversation they have in 'Heart of Gold' about having children. It's a funny 'romantic' moment maybe, but I think it's a conversation only a happy couple could have - and I think Zoe and Wash are one of the few really realistic couples I've seen in a TV show. Plus, it's kind of sad as it's one of those jolts out of the series: you see that they could be living completely differently, that losing the war really could have meant losing a whole way of life. It really made me notice that I believed in the characters as existing first and their situation second too, if that makes sense.

So, any other romantic favourites?

Well, Mal and Inara's almost-breakthrough moment at the end of HOG comes to mind. It was so intense! But since it ends with Inara leaving, I don't know if that's the kind of romance you mean, since it's more of the "Love hurts" variety.

I'm also fond of the little moment in OIS when Mal touches Inara's face where Early hit her, and Inara is so overwhelmed by the feelings that that brings up, she can't back away fast enough.

I absolutely love in Jaynestown with Stitch threw Simon in the dirt, and Kaylee went to him...The little "Honey" she said breaks my heart every time...I think that's when she became my favorite female character on the show...

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

I believe that's known as "tragedy" or British miniseries - one or the other.

The moment in OiS when Kaylee asks Simon if there isn't anything on Serenity that he doesn't feel glad of. He gives her that LONG look, reaches out and just about touches her when Book walks through.

Simon's so much better off romantically if he doesn't try to use words. Much more a man of action.

Also at the end of OiS when Mal and Inara are talking and he tries to take a closer look at her lip. He touches her, she gets him to stop, there's a look - brief, but LOADED - and she leaves.

She's like Cinderella, always running away. Mal wouldn't exactly be text book prince charming, but he does have his moments.

Mine has to be in "Serenity" Part 2, when Mal tells Inara to go to her shuttle and take the passengers and she says no, and he puts his hand on her shoulder, and that was intense...

Mine is in Jaynestown.

When Simon wakes up, there is a brief moment when Simon is content to be holding Kaylee in his arms...then he realizes Mal is towering over him and the moment is lost to 'I'd never...'

Sigh.

Of the 'love hurts' variety (sort of):

There's a moment in 'bushwhacked' when Inara is kind of complimenting Mal after he decides that those bodies can get a proper funeral. It's so beautifully done - his eyes soften just a little as she begins speaking, then when she's done they're empty again. It's like that exchange reminds him of the huge gulf between them.

Okay, not all that romantic. But affecting, all the same.

Of the Awwwww variety:

In The Message while Simon and Kaylee are in the "alien" booth, Kaylee is looking at the cow fetus as she talks about how it's sweet because it never even saw the light of day and now it's in show business, while Simon is staring at her with this look of just complete and unguarded adoration on his face. So sweet. I always think, if only Kaylee could have seen the way that he was looking at her just then, she probably would never have gotten angry at him again. Maybe. :)

In War Stories when Zoe comes to get Wash and Mal from Niska when she first walks into the room Wash is completely out of it and starts frantically saying, "No, no, run, run" at her. Adorable. Zoe's so kickass, but Wash worries about her so much anyway.

My absolute favorite will always be drunken!Simon telling Kaylee that she's pretty especially when she's covered in engine grease. And before Jaynestown it was very, very clear how much Kaylee liked Simon, but Simon plays everything so close to the vest that you couldn't entirely be sure about whether or not it was mutual. But the way that he gets this dreamy look on his face and just starts waxing on about it just brings it home. He thinks that she's especially pretty covered in engine grease. He not only noticed but he gave it more than a little thought. I just love that sweet confirmation that, yes, Simon is so into her.

Of the Love Hurts variety:

The end of Heart of Gold, the way that Inara starts to break just a little as she turning around after she tells Mal that's she leaving. So sad.

Also, in this section, Inara's breakdown in Heart of Gold kills me in general, but as she's crying she sort of pulls herself together for a moment, just a moment, but she just can't hold it and she bursts into sobs again. Breaks my heart.

My favorite romantic moment was in OIS, when River comes in on Simon and Kaylee talking on the couch. You get a sense that all the awkwardness between them and the formality is stripped away, and they're acting like they're on a first date. And that one shot where Kaylee touches him with her bare foot, and Simon says "There were no Feds....not until I started singing." That look on his face as he says that shows that under the right circumstances, our Dr. Tam can indeed be a smooth operator.

It's a nice romantic moment, which is only interrupted when River sees what's he's thinking and the happy couple is stone faced.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like ... ow ... ound ... round ... ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me?

At the beginning of OiS, when River is walking through the ship; as she approaches the cockpit where Wash and Zoe are kissing, she is overwhelmed by the deep emotions they're giving off and has to back away...

Also, Wash and Zoe in bed when Wash gives the "...all corpsified and gross..." speech. Unike the other "couples" on board, they are so comfortable and at ease with each other. I just thought they were such a perfect married couple right then.

Maybe this doesn't quite qualify as "romantic," but in "Heart of Gold," I think there's something rather touching to the scene when Jayne is sitting with that prostitute and braiding her hair. Like, the life he leads, when does he get the chance to braid a girl's hair?

There's something sweet and sad to that, I think.

Also, in "Our Mrs. Reynolds," when Inara thinks Mal has figured out that she kissed him...damn Mal for screwing THAT up!

Yeah, I *loved* that moment. Most serious moments between those two are really strong. Major nonverbals. I also always liked the two ones Shewhohathapen mentioned, like with Simon staring at Kayley in the "alien" booth. That was so sweet and he was just adorable. Then the next scene has Mal telling Inara he just "doesn't want her in the way of trouble".

Men!

I think my favorite is in Shindig: (paraphrasing)

ZOE: I like a dress with some slink.
WASH: You want a slinky dress? I'll buy you a slinky dress! Cap'n, can I have money for a slinky dress?

or in Bushwacked : (again, paraphrasing)

Those are some good ones but I am a Jaylee fan and am pathetically always looking for subtext so these are my favorites-

In Serenity Part I when they're all sitting around the table and Kaylee is laying it on pretty thick to Simon, there is a shot when you see Jayne look at Kaylee, hitting on Simon and then at Simon and back at Kaylee and you know he doesn't like what he's seeing. Gives me chills.
"You're not going to kill this man." -Book
"Not right away, no." -Jayne
Can there be any more proof of affection from a guy like Jayne than immediate painful revenge on your behalf?
Also, big tough mean Jayne crouching by the infirmary window anxiously watching to see if Kaylee will be all right.

And Wash and Zoe and the end of War Stories when Wash says, "Mmmm. Wife soup. I must have done good." and she tucks the napkin in and says, "Yes, dear. You did good."

Because I like the "intense" bits, I vote for Wash in War Stories: "run! run!", and Mal and Inara at the end of Objects in Space, at a point when they know the truth about their affections for each other, and come close to giving in.

"Wife soup" isn't a bad one, either.

Also the Objects in Space bit where Book ruins the Kaylee/ Simon moment! And the subsequent awkwardness! that was both annoying and funny! :D

PS. Kinda wanna kick Simon's ass for the numerous stupid things he says to Kaylee! :D
Here's to hoping we get something good in Serenity in the Kaylee/ Simon department.

Late to the party but it's such a good thread!

I got invested in the Mal-Inara romance in 'Serenity Part 2' when Inara says something like 'If you throw them off the boat, I'm going too' and Mal replies 'Perhaps that's for the best'. It seems kind of harsh, but if you watch his face for the couple of milliseconds before he replies, you can see that the idea of her going absolutely kills him, but then he pulls himself together and gives a tough guy response. It's a beautiful piece of screen acting.

I have 2, both of which involve Kaylee and Simon...first is in Jaynestown, where they're both drunk and talking and Simon says (ha) she's pretty-"..even when you're covered in engine grease..no; especially when you're covered in engine grease!.." It's so sweet and candid; you can tell he really means it, but it still takes a coulple mugs of that drink to make him say it. And then they end up sleeping on each other..awwwww!!!
Second is when Kaylee asks him if there's anything out here he likes..you can see her aching for him to say "yes, you.." and him aching to say it..then it looks like he's gonna say it with a kiss-BUT-the stupid shepard has to ruin it..*sigh*

Not really 'romantic' but in the Pilot, when Kaylee is going on and on about how important doctors (Simon) are, Jayne basically adds subtitles and says what she's getting at. "Little Kaylee just wishes you was a gynecologist" and then something along the lines of "Just because Kaylee gets all lubbed up over some city boy..." I thought the look on Kaylee and Simons faces were funny.

I actually have a very long post I have been working on for quite a while that still needs a lot of editing, so I don't know when/if I will ever post it. But it is on my own insight into Mal and Inara.. the two characters that litterally feel like they belong to my soul..

But in that "essay" of mine.. I brought up a couple of thoughts that are along this same topic that I was wondering what other people's ideas are..

I don't see Firefly as ever being the story of Mal and Inara as "being" together.. but as the story of them "comming" together. Like if they ever come together but the story still goes on.. I don't know if it would be the same... but anyway...

Quote:

This is the only time they ever kissed. And it really didn't count since Mal was passed out . But what is everyone's idea of how would Mal and Inara's first "true" kiss be? What would lead up to it? Why/how would it happen? And their first kiss, would it be tender and romatic? Or would it be agressive, lustful and passionate, as if to tear the ship part? I have my own funny/passionate story of their first kiss in my mind.. I would like to hear other people's ideas first.

Secondly.. I don't believe their first "true" kiss would be the point that brings them truely together.. just another event that brings them closer to it. But when Mal and Inara would eventually come together (even though it could be the last episode/movie ever ). What are your ideas for how it would happen? What would be the story/event that would finally bring them together? Again I have my own tragic/beautiful idea.. but was wondering first what other people's are..

I don't know if it's so much a romantic moment as an "unrequited love" sort of moment...but it's the part in "Our Mrs. Reynolds" when Mal says to Inara (and keep in mind I'm paraphrasing here): "Let's be honest...you didn't really hit your head did you?"

And Inara...so breathy and weak at the knees, dropping her eyes, replies: "No..."

I don't know why, but that's probably one of my all-time favorite Mal and Inara moments. What I would give to have been Mal at that instant! There are a lot of sexy Inara scenes in that series, but to me, she was her hottest right then and there...

Of course, I want to slap Mal silly when he grins and says: "I knew it...you kissed her too!"

The first is from the movie where Inara contacts Mal and they are both stammering like teenagers at each other about the trunk that she left on Serenity. They are saying a lot with their eyes though. Then as Mal comes up to the bridge he realizes that everyone saw everything.

The other moment is at the end of Out of Gas. It's the last flashback when the used spaceship salesman is trying to sell him a rocket, he glances over and see a Firefly-pure love at first sight.

I think my favorite moment is in War Stories when Zoe goes to bargain for Wash and Mal. She has to choose between Wash and Mal and for a split second I was certain she would choose Mal, but she chose Wash, that almost made me cry.

The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds given adequate vacuuming systems.

And that one shot where Kaylee touches him with her bare foot, and Simon says "There were no Feds....not until I started singing." That look on his face as he says that shows that under the right circumstances, our Dr. Tam can indeed be a smooth operator.

Oh, my...I loved that bit. For me, pretty much anything dealing with Simon and Kaylee. Like in Jaynestown, when he's hurt and in the dust and she goes to him and says, "Honey," in the sweetest voice. So adorable, I tell you. And all that stuff in HOG with Mal and Inara, in the "love hurts" category. That crying scene breaks my heart every time.

"Wife soup" isn't a bad one, either.

Oh, I'm a fan of intense moments too, and that's also one of my favorites.

I'd also like to refer to, in terms of intense moments, in "Our Mrs. Reynolds", when Saffron announces herself as "Malcolm Reynolds' widow", there's that split-second look of pure horror on Inara's face at the thought of Mal being dead. Then fighting ensues. Then of course the dramatic scramble to his bunk and the kiss. But that look she gets gets me every time. Gotta love an actor or actress who can pull off good reactions.

Most of my favorites have been mentioned already, so excuse me if I repeat I love drunken Simon and Kaylee in Jaynestown.
Also, there is a small Wash and Zoe moment in Bushwacked, after Jayne's encounter w/ the surviver in the galley. Wash hear's the shots over the comm and starts freaking out until Zoe answers him. He just needed to know that she was okay, and the look of relief on his face when he hears her voice makes me smile everytime.Plus the "Run!Run!" moment in War Stories is oh so sweet. Also, love Mal and Inarya's conversation at the end of Shindig.

Just a few favorite lovey, non-romantic moments:
Simon's speech in Serenity Pt 2. The look on his face is the sweetest thin I've ever seen.

Wash and Zoe in the shuttle during War Stories, when he's telling her how Mal kept him from breaking. Okay, maybe not love but still...goodness.

"We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... 'This Land'."

Heard lots of folks sayin how much they liked mal falling in love with serenity the first time he saw it in OoG. Gotto say, the first time i saw serenity i think i had the same feeling. Whe ni saw the movie it was the first time i'd heard or seen anything of this verse and when the camera pans round serenity for the first time all peaceful... beautiful.

And then ya realise the ship is entering a planet atmosphere...... awesome.

Yes, I echo the "I love the ship moments". Folks have already mentioned Mal's love at first sight in Out of Gas and Kaylee's "That's my girl" in Serenity.

My favorite is the look on Kaylee's face when the close up the hatch in "Serenity" She simply cannot believe she does not have to fight folks off her wonderful ship.

Also the way River carresses the ship with her feet and hands in several moments.

See how I'm not punching him, I think I've grown!

PsychicRiversaid :
Mine has to be in "Serenity" Part 2, when Mal tells Inara to go to her shuttle and take the passengers and she says no, and he puts his hand on her shoulder, and that was intense... end quote

Yes.. Mal just BURNS in that moment!!! Everything we need to know about the way he feels about her is there!

I also love in BDM when Mal askes Inara if she is ready to leave or something ( at the end) and she says may be not quite, and Mal nods and smiles and walks off "all as it should be"

He is so open in that moment. He loves her, she loves him, they love each-other, and yet nothing has happened and who knows what will or when? They are on Serenity, they are in the black, both alive and all is good
it is a very Buddhist love affair in that moment..
I want to live my life like that moment...
no grasping
no fear
no future
just the perfection of the now

They're not romantic, exactly, but I dearly love the several private scenes between Simon and River.

"We're on a ship!" (TJ - wonderful reading on that line.)
"I'll knit!" (OMR)
"Everything that matters is right here." (Safe)
"Time to wake up." (Ariel)
"I threw up on your bunk." (WS)
"Am I talking to Miranda now?... No. Right." (BDM)
"Don't say that, not ever. We're going to get through this." (BDM)

I agree! You can see the struggle in his eyes, yet what wins is the fact that he realizes it would be safer for her NOT to be on the ship if things go south. He doesn't want her to go, but he believes it could be in her best interest to leave. And when he turns and walks through the bulkhead door and down the hall, he's a little unsteady on his feet and reaches out to the wall for support before he starts to turn the corner when Simon stops him. Almost like he was so emotionally affected by her threat to leave that it made his knees a little wobbly. He was that disappointed.

How can actors put so much into their work? It's so cool!

HobanWashburn called it.
That moment in "Our Mrs. Reynolds", when Zoe and Wash are snuggled together in the firelight. It's so natural- not forced, or strained. Just comforting.

The other is that moment in "Objects in Space" and Kaylee mentions rescuing them from Niska and Zoe just reaches for Wash's hand. To me, that's love- that comfort shared.

My favorite moment is from OoG, where Mal and Inara are in her shuttle just before the crew uses them for lifeboats. They look at each other after he’s finished giving her all the instructions, and he can tell she’s about to say something important, and he stops her with “And try not to talk. There ain’t no need for it, it just uses up air.” But she plows on and says for him to come with them in the shuttle, “You don’t have to die alone!”, and his response “Everybody dies alone.” And they just stand there and look at each other.

That affects me so much — it feels like when you accidentally hit your head so hard that you lose your balance, and it hurts so much you just want to throw breakable things.

when river floats down from Early's space ship "permission to come aboard" and Mal so obviously wants to welcome her, like she doesnt need to ask...
and he tells her to get down inside

yes! and then he is really mean to Simon! and it is like his heart break is turning into poisen in his mouth and he spits it over the poor Simon, who then runs to check Haylee, he we all think everything is gone... then Mal is pissing himself laughing with Wash Zoe and Jayne! That was a strange emotional leap... he knew Kaylee was fine, was he just hurting because he thought Inara was more loyal to the yuppie children than to him?

No, I see that moment, Mal telling Simon that Kaylee was dead, was a chance to test Simon's reaction. Was this someone who truly cared whether Kaylee lived or died?
If Simon's first thought had been for himself, or for River, Mal would have thrown him right out the airlock. But Simon's expression turns to shock, and he turns and runs for infirmary, with Kaylee being his first priority.

And yah, it was a GREAT joke on poor Simon!

Hands down, in The Message, when Simon and Kaylee are standing in the snow, he's in his big coat, and they're holding hands to that sad sad music. That scene makes me want to cry everytime. It's kind of like "You may do stupid things, simon, but when I need to hold someone's hand, I'm going to hold yours."

I just have a thing about holding hands.

Same with the BDM when they're holding hands at the gravesite.

I love the MALMALMALMALMALMAL in "OMR". Inara afraid he's hurt. I love that bit. I don't know if this counts, but I fell for Mal in "OMR". Him trying to toughten Saffron up for the real world, telling her that she should try to kill someone right back, I just loved that. And he's so cuuuuuuute. Drat. I have to go watch that now.

This is one for the sad romantic category:

The scene in TM when Kaylee is listening to the message again lying in her hammock. Simon obviously wants comfort her, but he can't find the strength to enter the room. His heart looses the battle against his brain once again.

Just like me sometimes.

Also,
That bit in "The Train Job," when Mal's in Inara's shuttle at the beginning. When he's looking down at her as she's putting something away, and then again when she's facing him. It's like he really, really wants to just hug/kiss her and get it over with, but--for some idiotic reason--doesn't. And then that hilarious scene later where she slaps him! I laughed sooo hard!

The "proper" one's a good one too.
