Different, but shiny in its own scrumptralescent way. I like the blank, deserty setting, and the fact that we get to see more of the BDH besides Mal and River, all looking wonderfully bad-ass.
Plus, extra credit for the tantalyzing cryptic paraphrase from the film.

Okay, it LOOKS spectacular, but the tone, look, and feel have nothing to do with the movie! I guess that happens a lot in marketing.

It's a great shot of River - not too fussed on the rest of it. I know a lot of us were moaning about the lack of cast in the other poster, but to me they just look like cut-outs stuck in the background.
I had to look twice to make sure this wasn't a mock-up that some talented Browncoat had made - like many people have commented, Nathan looks more than a little like David Boreanaz at first glance!

Agreed - for a moment I really thought it was DB. The browncoat has become a blackcoat! In fact, the whole poster looks gothic rather than scifi and the knife that River is holding belongs in Buffy's armoury. Note too that after the title, the biggest lettering is 'Buffy and Angel'.
I think we know what how the Australian distributors plan to market this film. Are there any Australians here to comment on whether this is a good strategy?

An Australian perspective
You're right about River's weapons, she can kill with her brain, gorram it. It is certainly open and spacious, maybe they are trying for an 'outback' openness. I can't say I would be enticed just by the poster. Unless there is an awful lot of character development in the movie, who are these people? Why is Inara holding a gun?
WHo are the people who design these things, do they know nothing about the story? Buffy and Angel very popular in Aus but not necessarily a major selling point. Once again I ask, who are these people.

Hate it. Firefly/Serenity is suppose to be SF with strong Western elements. This poster (particularly how River is presented here) suggests nothing of the kind.

Its unique and with river in that pose ...definitely eye-catching...and the more people that are intrigued enough by that poster to go and check it out..the better for the Big damn sequel!!!
altho i do acknowledge what you're trying to say..
...remember tho, American Western themes are not that appealing outside of USA...

Seems to me this poster is targeted specifically at Buffy fans, no? River in her 'slayer' pose, Mal as Angel, noir/gothic treatment, etc...

For those complaining that Inara is holding a gun and that River has odd weapons for Firefly...
Wait until you see the movie.
's all I'm saying 'bout that.
As for an Australian perspective...
I like it. I think it will generate interest in a movie created about a show that was never really given television play here.
Firefly is popular here mainly with the Buffy/Angel fans who heard about it through their obsession with Joss.
Highlighting the "created by Joss who created Buffy/Angel" is a marketing strategy that will pay off. I feel.
Also, the Australian market is a little more jaded to the Western/Cowboy elements of a movie than the US audiences.
Kudos to the team for doing their research and recognising this in time.

And where, if i may be so bold as to inquire, is the BIG DAMNED SHIP for which the film is so aptly named? Is it hidden under that mountain? Were there monkeys ... terrifying space monkeys at the photo shoot that buried it so no one could see it? It looks like there might be a piece of it sticking out, but still ... kinda shabby treatment for our favorite Firefly class transport.
It also seems as if the cast members in the background of the pic were chosen oddly -- Mal is obvious, but Jayne? Zoe, maybe, but Inara? And Inara with a GUN? No bad guys, no space shots? And excuse me, but there's enough open space on that desert to give us Kaylee and Wash and Simon and Book, with enough room left over for Crocodile Dundee and a marching band of wallabees.
I'm a marketing person, and it just seems like they're missing the boat -- since Serenity ain't there, i guess they are, literally. *grins*

Town Patron: This is a holy cleansing. You cannot think to thwart God's will.
Mal: Y'all see the man hanging out of the spaceship with the really big gun?
I'm not saying you weren't easy to find, but it was kind of out of our way
and he didn't want to come in the first place. Man's looking to kill some folk.
So really it's his will y'all should be worried about thwarting.

Medium-Weak spoilers to answer your post:
Select to view spoiler:
1) One of the few tiny quips I had about Serenity was the lack of Serenity itself. It definitely didn't come across as a 10th character like in the show. And the last portion of the movie didn't have it in at all. So the poster actually is fitting in that respect.
2) The characters here are most definitely the main ones in the movie. Book has a minor role. Kaylee has a disappointingly minor role. Simon, other than an awesome intro, also has a minor part. Wash does have a decent role but I guess he's not the most exciting thing to have on a poster (in the nicest way possible).

I'm sorry, I think you've got the wrong movie. I didn't see Crocodile Dundee *OR* wallabees in the version of Serenity that I saw.

Weeelll, River IS kinda the big focus point of the movie. So I get that, kinda.
I'm IN LOVE with this poster. It has a way different feel than the one most of us are used to, but I feel this is in a good way. It'll definitely catch attention. And it's just so darn pretty, I wanna make lots and lots of livejournal icons. MMm. Preetttyy.

I have yet to see the BDM, so my complaint about the poster may just spill over to the movie.
I think River looks too sexy. Her character is only 17, and she's supposed to be nuts. Now, Summer is one of the most lovely gals in the verse, but I liked it when they covered up her beauty a bit in FF and made her look like a loony little girl.

Just 'cause it's a poster with our people on it don't imbue it with greatness. Truth is, poster's {chinese}. Even Jayne coulda threw something together better'n that. With no pay. Mal, he'd a shot the guy that came up with that gorram thing in the knee, make 'em do it again. Then shoot out his other knee for good measure. Only one that's gonna been happy with it'll be River. And we all know she ain't right up there.
You folk stop dripping your lavish praise on somethin' for mere sakes of it being brownish. We're all Browncoats here. Don't gotta pretend to fall in love just 'cause we fear the wrath of a bit of flame. Be a mite more selective.
That said, if it makes a few more of them gorram folk from Down Under, them as can pay, open their eyes and take notice of what we've got showin' for them, great. Ain't for us anyway.

I mean you guys should be happy. C'mon!! Its a new poster! More attention for the movie! It looks interesting! Veyr cool and stylish.
First, people say they didn't like the trailer because of this or that, whatever, and now people don't like the poster.

Personally? More Firefly episodes. Less yammerin' about how great the poster is. Simply put, poster's not in the spirit of the show, and was done for targeting a particular market.
It's about quality, not quantity. If it's between more of this crap and nothin' at all, I'll choose nothing'.
Now that I think on it, that thing bothers me more and more. That poster was clearly put together by some marketing goon who didn't see a single episode of the gorram show. Come on... River looks like a slayer. And that whole mess in the middle that's supposed to be Serenity? Bah.
It just ain't right.
If you didn't like the trailers, well, that's a matter altogether different. That there was a piece of the god-honest stuff. But then, if trailers were horses, we'd all be eatin' steak.

It looks like the poster for some cheesy 1980's sci-fi movie, some straight-to-video thing like "Krull". I kinda like the fact that it's not just a typical floating heads poster, but it doesn't seem like Firefly at all.
I do like the Serenity logo, though. Very art-nouveau (but again, not very Firefly).

Howdy do all, yike! first time on this whole forum thing - all a bit scary - you FF fans sure are dedicated! Thx for all the top info i have gained about FF and Serenity since i found this page much praise to ya'll.
Anywho i had a thought about the new poster, first i thought i did prefer it to the confused mergo-heads other one - all a bit big-headed (in a size way!). The first thing i thought of when i saw it was that River reminded me of Baby Spice in that Say you'll be there (??) or something Spice Girls video in the desert - anyone else with me on this. So it has kinda ruined it 4 me now!
I guess they are trying to appeal to a wider market - but they are a bit rrrubbishh, posters so far a bit disappointing - sure it's not a reflection on the movie tho! (can't wait!)
Also a big booo to my work, who have banned me from getting on the fantastic new Serenity website - i guess i will have just do some work now, d'oh!

Sorry - will make sense to Brits!
Speaking of which, there's a pretty big contingency over here, Sundance. Tickets for the previews sold out in minutes - there's the Starfury Serenity 2 convention in November ( www.starfury.com) and if you pop over to http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/ you'll find a UK Browncoats thread and various posts about upcoming shindigs.
Hope that helps!

Well, if it's the poster for Australia it's probably pretty good - outbackish local and a sexy minx with weapons (have you SEEN many Auzzie films??!). Like someone else pointed out - a Mad Max feel.
As far as what I'm seeing, yeah, it has a bit of Krull and other 80's cheese scifi look to it, but then I liked those in a harmless entertainment way. My only... 2... mini gripes would be where the HELL is the ship?? Without it is this some kind of desert rat army film?? Is there anything that says "scifi" in this poster without the ship? I'd also think that some people would think Serenity is actually River's character's name (which is actually kind of cool, a character named Serenity with 2 big mofo swords).

Gotta say I'm not a fan of this poster.
It seems to have nothing to do with the movie. Sure River does get her fight on a bit, but that's not really the point of it all.

Ofcourse I meant international poster, not trailer

By the way, there's a large version of this poster, and a wallpaper version on the Dutch UIP site. http://www.uip.nl/serenity.html

Damn! If I wasn't already a fan I would see the movie just based on this poster.

Still think its crap.. lol.. I'm an Aussie and i'm very disappointed.
Whats the go with the Serenity logo? so bad. The E's with the backward play buttons.. lol..
Oh well even if the promotional stuff sux the movie still rocks. I just hope everyone goes to see it. Joss deserves the praise. A great movie with a few surprises.

These really aren't complaints, just observations. Assuming I didn't know anything about Joss, BUFFY, ANGEL, or FIREFLY...
I would assume that girl's name is Serenity and that she's one kick-ass chick. And that incongruity would intrigue me.
I don't know what I'd think of the people in the background. They are so far behind this girl named "Serenity" that I would wonder what their connection to her is. Are they after her? Are they seeking her out so she can help them?
I might also think the movie had a post-apocalyptic setting.
I would never think that thing in the background was a spaceship. I probably wouldn't think anything about it.
I would wonder why that belly-dancer in back had a gun.
But I am a Whedonite so my reaction is that her pose is striking and more of an eye-catcher than the American poster. But I agree the background characters look stiff. Serenity itself should be more obvious. And why IS Inara packing heat?
Summer/River is so eye-catching though that I'd have to say it works but just barely.
Since I'm seeing the movie anyway, It could be a shot of the crew blowing their noses and I wouldn't care.
But as something to interest the general public the illustration might not jive enough with the slogan to pull me in.
As for those who are into genre stuff but are lukewarm towards Joss, I think they'd be the most likely to go "Pfft, he's just doing some other kind of version of BUFFY".

Hee. Oh, that made me laugh.

It's not unprecedented. She quite capably used a gun in "TRASH" when she locked Yo-Saff-Bridg in the dumpster.
Is it quite sad that my reaction to the poster (and the trailer and the movie) is more along the girly lines of "and *where* can I get me a pair of those boots?"
Man, they rock.

This poster is awful.the only plus side it has is river's pose, but apart from that it doesent say serenity. The american poster has a feel to it,the aussie poster screams swords and scorcery wich the damn movie aint about.one last thing the american poster has river ,serenity, mal etc on the poster, but the aussie poster dosent even have the bloody ship on it.its like the aussie marketing is worried to call it sci-fi.

I've set a little poll up over at my site: www.destinything.com. Everyone feel free to drop by & vote for your favourite poster.
Only a few votes cast but the US poster has the edge so far.

There is some good to come from this poster for me. It has instilled a dread that early in the production, Mr. Whedon's brain was removed and replaced with a bowl of tapioca. This results in Serenity being an absolute stinkaroo. So when it's released, it gets one star reviews across the nation (zero stars from critics who do that sort of thing). Two thumbs way, way, waaaay down from Ebert and Roeper. Serenity tanks worse than Mindhunters. Mr. Whedon loses his directorship for Wonder Woman, becomes a pariah in Celluloid City, and is reduced to living in MacArthur Park. That is the sort of dread this poster has instilled in me. Why this is a good thing I'll let you figure out for yourself.
BTW I voted U.S. poster. At least that one kind of sort of conveys science fiction.
The rabbit is cuddly. Kids like little cuddly sidekicks. I mean... The rabbit... It's a time-tested... Okay, the rabbit bites.

True, Inara used a gun against YoSaffBridg. But Inara holding a gun doesn't represent what Inara's about in the way that it does Zoe and Jayne. And I would think they'd want to "say" something about who Inara is in their poster, if you could actually see her (and maybe full-sized you can).
There's nothing "sad" about your reaction to River's boots. The converse of your reaction to them is "Check out that chick in that rockin' pair of boots". So your interest in River's boots isn't reserved for the "girly". But in this picture I can't see enough detail, so I'll have pay attention to them in the movie to assess their "rock" quotient.
'Cause women in boots? Whew! That really does it for me (but not in a freaky way--it's more...appreciatve). And by "appreciative", of course, I mean "lustful"

I don't like it - the tone is nothing like the TV series (I haven't seen the [pre-screenings of the] movie yet)
Is that Nathan Fillion? Are you sure? Where is Serenity, where is Wash, Kaylee, Simon, Book?
BUT MY BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT THE WORD "FIREFLY" IS NOWHERE VISIBLE ON THE POSTER.... CERTAINLY NOT AS VISIBLE AS "BUFFY" AND "ANGEL". No reference to the TV series that spawned the show ... WTF?
Hmmmm.... I am concerned, but not overly so.
I am also concerned that I am going to have to watch Rove this Tuesday, just to see Joss. It's great that he's on mainstream TV to advertise the movie, but I hate the bucktoothed little weasel that will be interviewing him...

Ugh. I *know*. I can't stand Rove. I put up with him last year to see the James Marsters interview and that was bad enough.
I have to work tomorrow night, so I'm going to tape it, which means i can at least fast forward the weasely little prick.

Hey there, this is my first time to respond, so wanted to say hi first.
Well, I do like the poster, but agree with what you are all saying about relevance, but seriously, I have yet to see a poster that does anything other than look pretty. I haven't seen the US one, could someone point me in the right direction so I can compare?
Also, I noticed today that cable here in Oz is picking up "Firefly" and had a kickass ad for the show which made even me wanna watch it when it comes on, and I, of course, already OWN the dvds!!! So with any luck it'll drag some more Aussies in for an educational before the movie!!!
cheers.

I haven't seen the US one either ... wouldn't mind a look.
As for relevance, some posters do work for the general mood, etc. Take the new Harry Potter poster for example ... dark times ahead, Harry. I love that poster - it is absolutely perfect for the kind of movie I am expecting.
But you're right ... on the whole, they are fairly inconsequential.

Great ad, isn't it?
The only prob with that is that only Serenity (the pilot) will be broadcast before the movie is released.
In all likelihood, Serenity (the movie) will be long gone from cinemas by the time FOX8 airs "Objects in Space"
Oh well. It's still good though - about a hundred bazillion times better than nothing!

I found the US poster (and it even allows you to vote on which you think is better). So if you still haven't seen it, try http://www.destinything.com/index.html
I still think that the international one is better, but just because River is SO cool!!

Oh, and for those of you who do like the poster, I'll shortly be posting links to it in different sizes.

I've seen the screening.
Love the movie.
Dislike the poster.
I see no reason that any opinion on this poster would have anything to do with their opinion on the movie. The poster is far from anything related to the movie IMO.

It's more relevant and beautiful than those other two, in my opinion.

Actually, many concerns about the poster do relate to the movie. Who and what are not pictured, Inara with a weapon, River with an ax, and the symbollism
of the distance between the characters, all of these are mentioned above as bothering people and all are related to the film.

Okay...River does not look like River, and where in this poster are we getting the sense that this flick is set in space, not the outback? And, most importantly, where's Serenity? Is that not the name of the ship? The ship that is infact as good as a main character? Grumble grumble. Enough. I love the poster for the mere fact that it's advertising the honourable Mr. Whedon's work to the un-enlightened, that's gotta be worth something. And hey, this may be the "Aussie" poster, but the one I see everywhere is a simple green-on-black close up of River and Mal, I actually didn't click that it was Serenity til I took a closer look. And yes, I do live in Australia, so that does mean we have more than one poster on offer. Shiny.
