My thought is that if people see a 15% or higher on the polls, it may pique their interest enough into going to see it and opening themselves up to the shiny goodness that is Serenity.

It's completely wrong and unethical... but if people who have never heard of Serenity see it at the top of the list they may just go, "huh?! Serenity? It must be good, I think I'll go see it..." And then they'll buy the DVDs and watch them and get the comics and then start posting here - we'd actually be doing them a favor... how can that be bad?

I've said it before about these online polls - they aren't contests we can win or tests we can cheat on. They are purely for entertainment, and if I can get Serenity more exposure by voting more than once I will do it. So should you!

IMO ethics and online “Buzz Gauging/Non-scientific” polls are apples and oranges. If it was supposed to be a scientific poll then there are many things MSN could have done to prevent/reduce the number of multiple votes.

In part, the purpose of these polls is to gauge the amount of “buzz“ that is surrounding a film. This includes gauging how quickly word of the poll spreads among the fan base. It is obvious that “Corpse Bride” fans got an early start on the voting/multiple voting. If a certain fan base were to try and be ethical in one of these polls, it would only prove that the fan base wasn’t as excited about their film (or in some cases, not as large and not capable of high vote count).

Multiple voting in these entertainment polls is expected. If it wasn’t then they “Would” take steps to make it a poll that produced more “scientific” results.

Basically, it's all in good fun and let the most rabid fan base win!!!! :)

That's my point too - if we all vote once, and it still wins, we'll know that Serenity is genuinely anticpated by lots of people. I appreciate your argument that it's all good hype - but it's still false hype.

I think we can use all the help we can get - I just had a relative email cause of this poll -- he'd never heard of Serenity and wanted to know what I could tell him about it. He was interested cause he wanted to know what could have come close to Corpse bride!

I haven't voted yet (because I was reading this thread) but I'm about to. I definitely think that Corpse Bride had more votes because of the fact that they have ads on TV. But, those ads just started recently and it is being released Friday (in some places, anyway). Once Serenity's trailer hits TV, the number will jump up whether any Browncoat multi-votes or not. Besides, as a proud, red-blooded American I know there's nothing wrong with voting multiple times. People have been doing it in our elections for ages.

Usually a lurker, 'cause I tend to get quickly addicted to anything related to Joss, but I had to chime in on this because... well... mostly because I had coffee & it's just too hard to be quiet.

I voted only once. I think that's right & good. (Serenity's at 40% after my vote)
Cheating is naughty.
But I would cheat if Serenity fell behind.

Is there some kind of frightening psychological profile I fit?

That sounds about right. The trailers for Corpse Bride seem to be everywhere at the moment and it's wide release is in 2 weeks. That could be partially why it's doing so well compared to the others - Just Like Heaven and Flightplan are the only others with tv spots at the moment. And they also open earlier.

I don't agree that it isn't cheating. However, your argument has been the only one to hold any water in the "is cheating okay" debate. Arguments such as, "It's okay to cheat because we'll benifit from it," were juvanille and shameful.
Like I said, I don't agree with you, but I'm glad you actually made a point that didn't boil down to the idea that anything is okay as long as it is self serving.

I never said cheatin' was right--just said that this particular bit o' popular leverage wasn't cheating. Thank you for the implied complement though. Still, the ethics of cheating are a separate issue.

I didn't mean that you thought cheating was right. I'm sorry I came across that way. I figured you meant that repeat voting in this case WAS NOT cheating. I was annoyed with those who agreed it was cheating but justified it.
