Greg Edmonson's score is available for purchase and download as a digital EP for $9.99. There are 17-tracks, most with multiple cues arranged into suites. The only downside is that they are .WMV protected files, but I'm a very happy flan right now.
Go get it!

I got mine!!!! Thank you for telling us. Boy, it sure took them long enough to get it out. Now if they only had album cover art to print, that would be perfect.
Makes me miss the show all over again. They really should have hired Greg to do the movie. This is soooo good.

Hmm. You can burn the files to a CD...
Does anything stop you from ripping them from the CD into MP3's?

To put the songs into your iPOD, you have to burn them onto a CD first, then rip them from the CD to your iPOD. I just got done doing it. It's a pain having to type the track listings manually, but this is better than nothing.
Also, if anyone has trouble downloading, you have to first download one of the listed players, turn off pop-up blockers, and enable downloads. I hate this FOX site (had trouble before downloading the Angel soundtrack too).

I talked FOX music over a year ago. They said that they would prefer to release it digitally. I got the impression they didn't expect the sales to warrant traditional release, but I could be wrong. I think this is as good as it gets.
BUT...if this sells really well, and Serenity does well, who knows right?
Can't Take My Gorram Sky
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Well, I ain't inclined to buy something protected like that. I'd like to be able to stick it into iTunes.
Sales would be better if they had multiple formats.
NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
hmm. I don't know if I like the track order (good thing about digital releases? you can switch them when you burn it to CD).
I just think The Funeral should be the last track instead of track 06. I haven't thought much more about it, and I think I'll listen to it carefully a couple of times before I do burn it to CD.

Jeebus cripes! I take back everything I've said - FOX seem to be doing everything they can to piss off and frustrate the fans. Not one gorram link involved with buying, listening to, or even getting the terms of use works, on either IE or Firefox; the downloadable samples don't play in Winamp, and clicking "Buy Now" does nothing but elicit a click.
I'm eager to give these people $9.99 of my cash and they don't do anything to facilitate it; I'd like to see Greg Edmonson and the folks involved get the money they deserve, but if I have to get this soundtrack from somewhere other than Fox Music, it's their own fault, and I think Greg and the rest should be told
.

Just got mine, and it's pretty awesome. You can indeed rearrange the tracks, so it is no biggy the order it comes in.
The file type is .wma
I can run it fine using windows media player, and got into fox's interface using the SBC yahoo browser, and it worked fine.
When you buy it, according to the rights, you can copy it to 10 CDs.

I wonder if it'll let me burn it to a CD using a non-MS program, though. 'Cause I don't know how to burn using Windows Media Player, and I have no other MS software on my machine at all.
Plus, there's the whole "the website doesn't work, so I can't buy it in the first place" issue.

Listen, guys. All of you's.
YES, you can put this into iTunes and iPod. All you have to do is burn it onto a CD, using whatever program you want. (Windows Media Player and Roxio works fine.) Then, extract it from the CD into iTunes, the same way you do any CD-R. You just have to type in the track listings yourself.
Anyone who has trouble downloading needs to 1) turn off pop-up blockers, 2) check the IE settings to enable downloads at prompts, 3) download, install, and open one of the listed media players.
It'll be all right.

Agreed. I think we should be gracious and even grateful to Fox for listening to our wants.
I know, it's not ideal... but if we show our support for this ("thank you" e-mails and purchasing) who knows what they will do in the future?

I would much prefer an actual CD to downloading it. I've never downloaded a soundtrack like this in my life, and the whole thing seems rather sketchy to me - I don't like how the download site has a different domain than FoxMusic. Even if it's offical and completely on the up-and-up, it's not a good business practice. I'll never pay for something when I'm redirected like that and can't verify that I'm still on the site I mean to be on.
Pretty much the only way I'll buy it is if it goes to Amazon.

I was just about leaping for joy when I got an email from Fox Music with news of the soundtrack. Then after inputting all my details as I tried to buy it, it said my country is not supported!
Stupid piece of fei oo
Why the hell does it need to be supported? All it requires is downloading! I live in the UK, not some obscure country where the internet is outlawed
ITs typical. I had the same problem geting the Millennium soundtrack. I eventually had to download that off a p2p program. And I was willing to shell out as well!

I highly recommend sending a comment to Fox with your opinions of this. It appears they DID listen to us (after all, we do have an album now), however, apparently we didn't give them enough information.
If you calmly inform them of how you feel, they MAY listen again.
For reference sake, here is what I sent them.

I sincerely wanted to be grateful for this. But after about 20 minutes of trying to figure out the poorly put together site, getting timeout errors, not being able to see what songs are availabe on the EP, learning that I would be downloading files that I couldn't put directly into iTunes and on my iPod and then waiting another 20 minutes while trying to register to the website so I could actually purchase this EP, only to have the site never actually allow me to get to a payment method, I am sorely dissappointed with the experience.
I would like to say thank you for the efforts Fox has put forth to allow the fans access to the music we so love...but I can only ask that the music be released in a different format or simply in a more accessible way than through foxmusic.com
Sincerely,
James Wright

This is the soundtrack for Universal Studio's movie release of the BDM.
The Soundtrack for the TV Series so far is only going to be released as a download. And it is such a pain in the ass if Internet Explorer is the browser you are using because if you don't mess with the security settings, it blocks the download. grrr...I fought with it for 30 minutes before figuring out what was wrong. Once you download it, you can burn it to a CD so it will become portable.

Well Fox's website is clearly not user friendly and the last thing I want to do is purchase Microsoft restricted files. (not sure if I'd have technical problems burning myself a CD or not) I would purchase the Firefly soundtrack in a second if Fox would release it in a normal form (and yes I already sent them feedback saying this).
Could someone redistribute this in a better format? (feel free to pay Fox for it, I'm MORE than happy to pay for it)
Thanks for the heads up on the soundtrack for the movie from Amazon... I just pre-ordered that! (see Fox wasn't THAT easy?)

Well… screw it! As much as I’d love to get series soundtrack (and I’ve been waiting awhile) if the best FOX can do is charge us $10 for a music file I can’t even download into my machine then I guess I’ll wait longer. Move soundtrack comes out on the 27th.
Why give FOX any money for doing the “extreme bare minimal” to provide fans with this great music, just so they can rake in a little more profit by feeding off the movie hype?

This is how Windows DRM works (as I understand it)
You download the files. When you want to actually PLAY the files, Windows queries the site to see if you are licensed. If you are, it sends an OK and you click "Play".
Some versions let you store the license on your computer, some are only good while you have a subscription to to whatever it is you're watching/listening.
Not sure how it's set up for this download, it's still downloading.
Will keep you posted.

If you can find me a high-enough resolution picture/scan of the front of the DVD case, I think I can do it, since this looks to be just a cropped version of that. I need at least 600 pixel width to match the resolution of this picture, though, and none of the ones I was able to google are wide enough...

You and me, both. I had the same experience, mostly: the files won't play on any DRM-compatible player on the machine on which they were purchased, but they will play on Media Player 9 on another PC on the same network; the purchase machine returns a "no license" message in every player. On the playing machine, I attempted to burn a CD, using Nero's plug-in, and it crapped out at track 11; after that, it now states that I have exceeded my license for burning CDs.
I have contacted support, and gotten a response. They said they discovered some problems with the files and corrected them, and gave me the direct link to download them again. They still will not play on the purchasing PC, and they still return the "license exceeded" error on attempting to burn an audio CD from the new files.
I've contacted support again, and also asked them to forward my comments and complaints to FOX's marketing department, trying to impress upon them that this market they are targeting is highly interconnected and we will spread the word if these don't work, and they will lose sales as a result. In their defense, the support people seemed genuinely interested in helping me resolve the situation, and prompt in their response; the problem seems to lie in choosing to offer a severely-limited product - both legally and technologically - rather than making it accessible and desirable to the largest possible spread of customers. Sorry, FOX, but DRM is not ready for prime time (nor do I believe it is even technically legal); find a better way to serve your shareholders.

SLGN, thank you for posting the Fox music e-mail addresses. I've sent them nice e-mails letting them know I *want* to buy their soundtrack.
"I aim to misbehave"... dang I really don't want to misbehave... I'm a very law abiding person and as a creative developer myself I certainly believe in the proper people getting paid but sheesh Fox... could you screw it up worse?

I have had the exact same problems as PTROPE. Well, except that I only have access to the one 'puter to do it on.
I am not at all impressed. But I hope that by spending my hard-earned platinum on this pile of go-se it convinces FOX to release a proper CD.

I'm torn.
I want Greg E. to get his well-deserved royalties.
I don't want to support the ramming down our throats of some second rate proprietary encoding format (.wmv) regardless of what it can be converted into. The only way it could be worse is if Fox music had aligned itself with Real Audio.

Well I finally got everything to work and now have my very own copy.
I am so happy The Funeral is there, probably one of teh best pieces of music in the show, and I'll pay good money for just that.
Do wish A Man Called Jane and End Titles were included though.

This sucks! I must have this soundtrack, but I'm a Mac diehard. Anyone else had any success downloading the crappy WMA files and buring them to CD on a Mac?
I've got OS X 10.4, with Windows Media Player installed and Toast Ti 7.0.1.
I can play the track samples, but am leary about purchasing if I can't burn the tracks to CD.
Also, can anyone who did purchase confirm whether the tracks include the "let's Moon 'em" music from the pilot. I just love that part...
Thanks!
UPDATE- I tried selecting purchase and it states it won't download or play on a Mac.
Leave it to Fox to screw the Firefly fans!

OK - just found something interesting... I just paid for it and downloaded the ZIP file of the soundtrack, 52.8mb worth - file name "Firefly_Original_Television_Soundtrack.zip".
The weird thing is all files enclosed are 256kb MP3 files, NOT WMA!
Anyone else experienced this? Oh, I downloaded this on my Mac if that makes any difference :)
Regards,
Shane.

I went home from work, tried downloading/burning from there. I had issues using Firefox to do this, but when I bit the bullet and tried with IE, all was shiny.

Success!
I just downloaded the Firefly soundtrack using my trusty Mac.
Used Mac OS 10.3.9 with Safari 1.3.1 with Pop-up windows unblocked.
As was reported, it downloaded a 52.8 MB .zip file that contained 17 .mp3 files.
All of the files are encoded at 192kbps except for the Main Theme that is 256kbps.
The weird thing is the ID3 tags!!!
Even though there are only 17 tracks, they come across with the following information:
(BLANK) Firefly_Main Title
2 of 23 Heart of Gold Montage
3 of 23 Big Bar Fight
4 of 23 The Funeral
5 of 23 Mal fights Niska/Back home
8 of 23 Deserted Ship/Empty Derelict
9 of 23 Books hair/Ready for Battle
12 of 23 Early takes the Serenity
13 of 23 In my bunk/Rivers eyes/Boom
14 of 23 Innara’s Suite
15 of 23 River tricks Early
16 of 23 River’s perception/Saffron
17 of 23 Goodbye Early
18 of 23 Leaving/Caper/Spaceball
20 of 23 River’s afraid/Niska/Book
21 of 23 River understands Simon
23 of 23 Whitefall/Book
It's a different track order than what's posted on Fox Music's web site...
...AND HOW DO WE GET TRACKS 6, 7, 10, 11, 19 & 22 ?!?!

I may be wrong, but I *think* these track listings may be the ones on Greg Edmonson's original CD to FOX (when they asked him to put something together for a score album). He used to misspell Inara as "Innara." If that is true, they probably decided to delete the missing tracks from the album.
(I'll try to verify this when I find that original CD...it's misplaced here somewhere...)

This is easy to get around if you are still willing to pay.
Just put in your country as "United States" and use a made-up city, state and zip code, like maybe NY98765. Worked a treat for me.

Now that the tracks can actually be played/burned/used in the gorram first place, the question is: exactly where does each track (and each cue in those tracks with multiple cues) come from in the series? Cos some are obvious, some, not so much.
River's Perception? River Understands Simon? River's Afraid? River's Eyes?
Hmmm... there's the theme there, it seems...
Anyways, once this gets worked out I might split the multiple-cue tracks down into their constituent parts, the better to use them with, oh, a Firefly RPG session, for example

Thankyou for all the info people. I was nearly resigned to not buying it. With a lot of effort I was able to download it. Of course, their website crashed Firefox 1.0.7 but just about worked in 1.5 beta. And that stupid flash application decided to start freezing on my part way through until I cleared my cache and cookies. I lied and told it that I was in the United States (thanks for the tip) .
Thankyou to whoever it was at Fox Music who had the sense to provide it in MP3 format. I bet they must have had hundreds of complaints about the wma DRM. The 192kbps MP3s are not variable bitrate unfortuantely but still thats much better than 128kbps wma.
The music is very nice but there are several great pieces from the series that are missing. I guess that there's just so much music they couldn't include it all.
NOTIFY: N | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
^^
Considering that the album is only 39 minutes long, and a CD is 74, there's a lot they could have included.
Still, it's good that they came around and provided something that works. I e-mailed Customer Support directly (since I already had an ongoing conversation with them regaridng the crap WMA files they initially posted) and thanked them for their help, and asked them to pass along to the marketing department my thanks for quickly resolving the entire issue by providing files that aren't hobbled by DRM. I also suggested to them that they stand a better chance of combating piracy by providing a decent product at a fair price than by treating all of their customers as potential criminals before the fact.
Thanks to the posts here, I went back and dowloaded the zip file - the new one (thankfully, they kept the link the same!) and am now listening to Firefly for the first time on my shiny stereo system, instead of on my tiny PC speakers, and it's great!
I really love Jubal Early's theme; the oboe is perfect for this! :D

Use any kind of software audio recorder that can basically record anything and everything that comes through the soundcard. You just recapture the songs when you play them and compress to mp3, ogg, or whatever format you want.
Not that I do anything like that.
