Hi there --

I hope it's ok for a newbie to post a new thread right away...

I'm trying to find information on River's boots, both from the series and from the movie production pics. They are very different boots. I've found some boots that are very VERY similar to the ones in the series, but I've had zero luck on the ones from the movie pics.

I've tried looking through the archives and the various threads, but I wasn't able to find any other discussions on this. If someone with more clue could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it much.

Thanks!

Are you looking just for pictures or for specifics about the boots (brand, etc.)

Thanks, everyone, for the welcome and for the information. The screen-caps are very helpful! And the links, too.

That gives me a good start. To answer the other question, I am looking for both good pictures / screen-caps as well as any information on maker/brand/whatever.

I'm trying to find both the series boots and the movie boots. I've seen only a couple pictures of the boots from the movie, too, but I haven't found them yet, either.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

If I find anything else, I'll post it here, as well.

Actually, how does this stand up to comparison?

I did a search on "gladiator boot", since that's what FallenAngel's link said, and I found the all-black version, without the shiny (shiny, not necessarily shiny...) metal plate.

Vixendarkfairy -- Yeah, fortunately, I wear US women's 7, which is a US men's 5. I just ordered a pair, since it looks like they aren't being made that way anymore.

Riverbirch -- Those actually look way more badass and cool. Nice find!

From what I can tell, TUK stopped making the version I posted, so the link I posted is just whatever they have left. TUK makes another version with a metal plate that is removable, though, and as far as I can see from the pictures, it will look right when you take the plate off.

Hope that helps any other boot-hunters!!

So following up on my boot-escapade here...

I ordered the boots from the link I posted up above somewhere, and they emailed me to tell me that they don't have them anymore. So I found another site that claimed to have a pair, and I ordered them last night. They processed my order this morning, and now the boots are no longer up on the website. I'm HOPING this means that I got them. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

For what it's worth, the TUK A6215 boots look like they would look right if you just took off the removable metal plate, but without having a pair to fiddle with, I don't know if the straps will go in the right place.

I have a pair with the metal plate, made by The Berlin Wall; painting the shiny metal with a flat black would make it look more leather-y. I also have a pair without the plate, almost exactly like River's, made by "Ad Hoc." I did a really quick search for both brands, but couldn't find them. Underground and T.U.K. seem to be the most popular. I found a bunch of other ones, though, that might work; can't recall what other links have already been posted, so my apologies if I'm doubling links:

http://www.underground-england.co.uk/acatalog/SSCBB.html
scroll down to "Thunder" Black Leather Plate Boot, they have UK size 3-13 for 99GBP

http://www.boots4all.com/tuk.htm
item number TUK2 has no metal plate, but they don't mention anything about size availability

http://www.vixensandangels.com/ and follow these links to the boots...
-> "shoes and boots" -> "Underground" -> "Boots (non steel) -> scroll to a style called "Borg" by Underground is similar (and on sale!) or
-> "shoes and boots" -> "Underground" -> "Steel Toe Buckle Boots" -> scroll to a style called "Judge St."

There were others, but I don't wanna clog up the thread with too many links. Every once in a while, I also see these boots on eBay for much less than retail. Anyway, there you have it. I hope this helps some....

Cheers.

Going backwards to River's boots during the series...

I was wondering if anyone purchased the TUK boots with the removable plate and if so, how do they look with the plate removed?

Also, if you do have a pair, I have a question about size: would Converse or Doc Marten sizes be equivalent to the TUK sizes? (What I mean is would a size 6 TUK be the same as a size 6 Converse or Doc Marten?)

The boots only come in full sizes and I usually wear a 6 1/2 but depending on the brand I can usually wear a 6 while a 7 would be too large.

I can only find the TUKs online and don't want to wind up buying a pair that's too large or small and end up having to pay for shipping twice just to get them exchanged!

Thanks!

Ryo, I have some excellent news!!

I ordered the TUK2 boots from www.boots4all.com (per a suggestion on this very board). If you compare them to stills and video from "Safe," you'll notice that they are VERY close -- the buckles meet in all the right places, the heel is slightly elevated, there's a pull tab on the back, the shin guard has the same indentations, and even the stitches seem to match pretty damn closely. The only difference I've yet to see is that the TUK2s have treads on the bottom, and River's boots (in Firefly) seem to be missing the treads (they're smooth).

Anyhow, I've ordered the boots (they should be here within a week's time), and I got a size 6. I'm a size 6 in Converse, and I'll let you know how they fit when they arrive (if you'd like).

I ordered the same boots from the same store!

I got mine in a few days ago and they really are an almost exact match for River's boots. I'm actually going to some local shoe repair stores to see if they can resole the shoe since I'm not a big fan of the thickness of the sole.

Wait, size 6 mens or womens? I was told they didn't have any more 4 mens/6 womens. Did you order the last pair? (I ended up getting a 5 mens/7 womens and plan on sticking in an extra thick insole to take up the extra room)

Wow. Same boots, huh? That's pretty shiny. (I got a size 6 in MEN'S (size 8 women's), by the way.) Let me know how the whole resoling goes -- if they can do it and how much and how they turn out.

Glad everything has worked out for you!!

The boots can be resoled

It's so much lighter now and the sole they used actually looks a whole lot like the soles of River's movie boots!

After doing some freeze framing and zooming on the DVDs and checking out some promo pictures, if you want to make them an even closer match to River's boots, it looks like they cut off the bottom third of the sole (up to the soft middle layer) and added a heel.

As for how much, the quotes were pretty much in the $40-50 range.

I've never posted anywhere before so if I commit some sort of faux pas I apologize ahead of time, I just want to help out my fellow fans. I bought a pair of boots at www.lovemyshoes.com that are about as close to River's in the movie that I could fine. They were less than $40 with free shipping which was a definite plus. When you get to the site search for "Street Feet Buckle" and it should take you right to them. The site is great, I ordered them at around 11am on a Thursday and they were at my door at 930 am the next day! I hope this is helpful.

If you mean Jayne's TV boots, they really look like a cheap pair of rubber and suede winter or hiking boots with some sort of seperate nylon and velcro "boot blouser" type thingies wrapped around his ankles. I have a pair of the boots that look fairly similar which I picked up at Wal-Mart last year for about $20, made by a company called "Crater Ridge".

And is it just me or would Nathan Fillion do a FANTASTIC job doing a Space Quest movie playing Roger Wilco.

Don't know what space quest is??? http://www.vintage-sierra.com/spacequest.html It was a Comedy-Action-Adventure game back in the day, I played it as a small child, though it wasn't a childrens games (though back then they didn't have ESRB ratings to tell you so, hehe). Nathan would be perfect for the part, for the fact he looks like Roger Wilco and he's funny :D.

but I can't tell really well from that... Otherwise there are the Judge St/Thunder ones on this page http://www.vixensandangels.com/Item.cfm?Type=64 (scroll down a bit) but they look so wrong to me... The plate doesn't go all the way to the top and it has like an inch of just plain leather... and steel toed. I've never worn a steel toed boot... anyone know how comfortable they are? I'm used to wearing normal doc martins daily for the past 6 years though... so do any of these measure up for comfort or anything? Any time I watch Firefly I always notice how awesome River's boots are, so I really want some... But yeah. Any opinions would be great ;D Thanks!

I have also been looking for boots that would work for a Brown Coat costume. This place does not have the exact boots but there are a lot that I think would work. They do a lot of reproduction boots. They might be able to make some that were very close to what we are all looking for. http://motorcowboy.zoovy.com/

I hate to say it but a lot of the Star Wars boots that they have on their site would look great with Firefly type costumes.Any one looking for a custom boot like the one river has in the film have a look at this place. http://www.baldmountain.net/design_your_own.html

This place also makes custom soft boots.
http://www.sodhoppers.com/MocPage.htm

There are a lot of places on the web that make moccasin boots. So if you look around you might find better deals then the sites above.

You know looking at Mal's boots in the photo above it looks like they are shoes that have been made in to boots by the wardrobe people. A dead giveaway is the way the tops atach to the shoe part. I have made my own boots before and this is the place you have got to give a bit of thought to other wise they do not fit right. What Mal is wearing is little more then spats to make the shoes look like real boots.

I am totally getting the TUK boots from findcoolclothes.com

URL is http://www.findcoolclothes.com/01019.html

Thank all of you for your work! Hehe, made it easy on the rest of us.

I'm going to use these for everyday use, they sound pretty durable, and I can also use them for a halloween costume, the dork I am.

In response to the question about Jayne's boots, they are Jungle Boots just like these:

/product-id/295537.html

and cost no more than $20 most places.

I found some boots for my River costume today ( from Serenity): http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v736/Marianne_Solav/Costumes/River%2
0Tam
/

They are not exactly the same, but they are close enough for me and I could always add some buckles on them to make them better. The funny thing is that the brand is called 'River Land'!
I bought them at Yellow shoes, but it might be a chain in Canada only and they have no website.

Hey, just checking in with you guys.

How is everybody else's quest for boots going? Mine come in tomorrow, looking forward to it! if people would like pictures of the TUK boots, just let me know, I'd be glad to help you pick out boots.

Edit; Aug. 26th, 2006

I got the boots, and let me tell you they are shiny! However for some of you out there who are as picky as I can be, here are the downfalls;

I wear a 9.5 USA in boots (women's) and they're a wee bit loose on me (looking into big socks.) and they're on the last hole for the buckles. The ankle support isn't great, and the leather is flimsy, which is why they are NOT motocycle boots.

They look like river's (if they were tighter...) but the inside of the boot is different. It has velcro there so you can take the plate off. If you look at http://www.still-flying.net you can see that River's boots have just a plain band that goes on the inside ("Safe" page three or four, when she's dancing.)

I love them and have been wearing them whenever i get a chance, but that is just me. I don't care if the get scuffed.

I'm interested if we can find Zoe's boots, I've never seen anything like hers. If I find anything, I'll post that.

Nothing else to report on my end, what about you guys?

Those Motorcowboy Mal boots are pretty frickin awesome. Yes, expensive but I can drool can't I?

And I must admit to being in love with the Qui Gon boots they offer. I always thought his boots would make a nice browncoaty style boot.

Cna't afford any of them though. Blah.

Those are shiny... I'm seriously considering a pair, however, I think they'd need some modification in the tread area. That is to say, it needs to go, as River's have none.

You know, if'n you're looking for good shots of River's movie boots... try looking at the (official? ) desktop wallpapers! I have one - the one wth River front and center and Mal, Zoe, etc., in the background along with a crashed Serenity (poor thing!)? That one. You can see the boots REALLY clearly. I'm talking the wallpapers you can find on this very site, too! :)

If I could only find boots that were the right color, length, size and sole type, I could probably just add the straps myself (hot-glue 'em or something).

Or, if all else fails, I'll try to find some remotely inexpensive combat boots, because from a distance, they look "close enough".

Funnily enough, I used to be into Sailor Moon stuff. Used to be, Sailor Uranus' boots (which have strappyness too) and Sailor Venus' shoes were hard to find a couple of years ago. Now I see the basic designs (albeit not the right colors, which would be dark blue and bright yellow-orange, respectively) all over the place! But not the River's style boots. Grr! (Sailor Uranus-style boots in black would almost work for River's movie boots... except the heel's too high and they're not quite tall enough). I know, because I spent what seemed like over an hour scouring every shoe-related or Hot Topic-esque store at the local mall, and found NOTHING that was "close enough" to warrant the prices (though there were some $20 boots in Payless that would have been OK - or workable, at least - had they not been so darn tall).

Siiiiigh. Did you know even the "remotely similar" combat boots are kinda expensive, though?? Weirdly enough, so far the Hot Topic prices are CHEAP! That says something. o.o

PS: Does anybody know if those cute "Street Feet" boots run in sizes comparable to Cherokee shoes?? I'm like a size 8 in my current Cherokees, but some of my other shoes are a 7 1/2 or even 7 (mind you, my current shoes are open-toed. And I think my left foot is a half-size smaller o.o)! Sizes can vary a lot between brands, so I'm just wondering how Street Feet compares - even if I don't use it for the costume, the brown ones in particular are cute and may match some of my existing wardrobe (so would the black ones, but the brown are "earthier").

I reckon it's a plan.

I have a pair of black chunky-heeled ankle-length boots I almost never wear (because I'm not as used to heels, and they kill my feet when they're that high). I use them whenever I wear my Misato Katsuragi costume, because she also wears black shoes that vary depending on whoever the hell draws her but are sometimes heels and sometimes combat boots.

If I can, I'll dig up a picture. (I ALMOST had a picture of me in that costume hugging Alan Tudyk - who flirted with me a bit, possibly because of it - but my camera's battery crapped out! *cries* Sidenote: Alan is totally awesome by the way - utterly charming, and money I spent just getting in to the con and getting his autograph on my BDM poster was So. Gorram. WORTHIT!)

I may end up wearing those same boots with the River costume I'm putting together for next con season, even though they're heels, because they're black boots, which would be better than nothing (or at least, better than my brown leather open-toed open-backed shoes I wear day to day would be, heh).

I'm wondering if I'm the only person that thought "So 6ixStringJack's a leg man..." as opposed to "So 6ixStringJack's got a foot fetish..." now. :P (I agree that us women's legs look quite nice in heeled boots. High heels make the muscles stand out in nice ways. Too bad they hurt a bit and can be hard on the knees! *wishes she could wear her cute canvas raised-heel open-toe shoes much more often than one or two days a week without getting blisters*)

Mayhap I have a bit of both in me. I've yet to find a part of a woman that I don't find enjoyable, but I do have a special place in my heart for a nice pair of legs and cute little feet. I assure you that I'm not the creepy kind of boot enthusiast.... I'm the FUN kind. I am the foot master... I'll rub em so good you'll arch your back. And I'm too cute to be creepy to boot. (Ha! Lame pun!)

Do you think it's weird that I've always wanted to be stepped on with the very clunky heeled boots you speak of? They're black too... my favorite color. Are they shiny? ...cause that'd be shiny.

You know, I had no idea that being stepped on was a fetish, but apparently it's common enough to have even made Desperate Housewives (in season 1, when Bree's husband cheats on her with the neighborhood hooker and we learn he's into BDSM stuff). Then again, there's always that type of massage where a small asian woman actually walks on your back, so maybe it's not that weird in hindsight...

And you know, the fact that you're into a Joss Whedon show? I'm pretty sure the wanting to be stepped on, by a woman, is a sign of liking strong women. ;) I think I had a character somewhere I was going to write who meets this cute girl who briefly mistakes him for a mugger, and so immediately slams him into a brick wall in what (she feels is self-defense)... by his neck. He survives (though possibly slightly concussed)... and immediately falls for her, of course.

They're black because that color goes with just about everything (and certainly goes with my wardrobe, even though I can really only wear them with long pants or relatively short skirts. Well, that and the River Tam dress...), but they're no longer shiny. I'd have to polish them for them to be shiny, and that would require effort on my part.

Ahhhhhhh.... another wonderfully delicious way that Desperate Housewives corrupts the youth. I have yet to watch that show, but I've heard that it's truly evil.

I've never watched Buffy or Angel (Though I have caught a few eps of Angel now that it's on TNT all the time). My younger brothers were big into it, but I was too busy in my late High School/ early college years to be bothered with actually sitting down to watch a show every week. After seeing the movie when I was a kid, I wasn't all that excited about it anyhow. I hear that it's much better than the movie though... now that I'm a Firefly fan, I have to believe it even without seeing it.

I do love a strong woman. I love a smart woman that can keep up with my mind and doesn't bore me with idle chit chat about every little detail of a celebritie's life or whatever current event trivia they learned on E! that day. I love a sexy woman who's confident in her sexuality and can be demanding but loving and nurturing at the same time. A little boot walking goes a long way, but in the end, she must be a nurturer.. someone who makes the man better than he may have been able to make himself on his own.

Pretty tall order, I know... I haven't quite found her yet.

Sounds like an interesting character you have there... you should definately write what your mind speaks to you. It's like this guy I worked with at a retail job when I was 16. The manager, an attractive and yet frigid ice queen, didn't care for something or other he did and she yelled at him about it. Man.. this guy was in love. He spent the next 2 hours telling me about how he was going to ask her out and how hot she was, and I spent the next 2 hours trying to tell him what a bad idea that was..... 2 hours later he quit when she shot him down in cold blood in front of some of the other guys. I must admit that after the whole thing I felt pretty attracted to her too. It was kind of like a virus that spread among quite a few of the guys in the storeroom.

About the boots.... they should be shiny! They should always be kept shiny! Has Desperate Housewives taught us nothing? Isn't that what boys are for?

Nooooo.... well, maybe. Less what I said than what I showed.
Just mentioned that I like boots, too, and pointed to a Flickr picture of mine that's probably not something to post on an all-ages site like this.
This one here, http://www.flickr.com/photos/sara013/225009246/ though, is perfectly harmless.

I just bought those, not exactly the same, but I thought they were close, the buckles are not the shape I'd like, but I figure they can't be that hard to change. They are imitation leather, but they looked good in the pictures. I guess we'll see when they get here. They were just under $30 for the boots and shipping. I tried to use the promo shot of the cast as my reference, I was going after more of the movie look.
