thanks to all the fabulous responses, the "What made you think of Firefly..." thread is taking a Gawd-awful time to load (116 posts--phew!), so we're starting fresh.

This is the thread where you can tell your Firefly-influenced experiences and not get that look that says your best friend/family member thinks, "You're half a bubble off'a plumb, and that's for sure and for certain." spouses and/or significant others are exempt from that look, I reckon--they already know how strange you are.

Maniacnumberone put it into clear perspective just recently:

I have been thinking about what makes me think about Firefly, and I came to the conclusion that I make myself think about Firefly. I mean sure, I have people who talk about it with me in the course of my day, and I come here to get my fix. But it seems to be a conscious decision. I decide to think about Firefly, then I do it, and in the course of doing it I come here usually and get Firefly-overstimulation. It used to seem like I was the one in control of whether I thought about Firefly, instead of it being in control of me. Fortunately though, I thought about Firefly a lot of the time. I think about it a lot differently now. I think of abstract aspects of it besides what I used to think about. I used to think mainly just about the plot, but that seems to have faded away with the absence of new episodes. Now I think about it as a stand-alone piece of work, that can be studied as a fragmented whole. There is much to look at and argue about. The fact that there is so much stimulus here on FFF is usually overwhelming...

by the way "You're half a bubble off'a plumb, and that's for sure and for certain," is from Quigley Down Under, and if it doesn't fit in Firefly, i dunno what does.

How can I argue with myself? I guess I can try. Dang it Maniac, you liar. Everything makes you think about Firefly, don't try to deny it.
No, no, I swear I am sticking by my original response. I am in control.
No, yer not.
Yes, I am. And stop telling me I'm not. Who are you anyway?
I'm your alter ego, crazy man. Which me are you?

Hee hee! You guys are nuts!

One of the girls I work with is in the Army Reserve. Her unit got activated a couple months ago. After training in Indiana, they were told they weren't needed after all, and they just got back in town. She stopped in to say hello and one of the other carriers said "Hey I thought you were going to bring me an ear!"

From the weird looks I got, I guess they all thought I laughed a little too long about that one...

and now my little voice is saying, "Self--these people are even crazier than you first thought."

of course, if we weren't then Haken would be here talking to himself too, wouldn't he?

it's pouring with rain here right now, and for some odd reason I'm finding myself imagining what rain would sound like on Serenity's hull.

Not so weird. I turn on my computer, my wallpaper is Mal and my computer plays the "space monkeys" wave. I log on the net and this is always the first site I visit when I log on. So, I can relate to you on this........

I should just make this site my homepage. I visit it first when I log on too. I guess I haven't due to the other people who use my computer. I suppose I shouldn't worry about them though, I should just do my own thing!
I sometimes think about the internet only as a means of getting my Firefly fix.

somehow, I'm thinking there's no possible way you're alone on that one. as for my own self, I play the Firefly theme at least once every time I sit down at the 'puter at home. doing it right now, in fact. can you hear it?

on a recent episode of Enterprise, Capt. Archer was taken captive by an alien bounty hunter. aside from the tiny skew toward Objects in Space (this guy wasn't nearly as abstract as Early), the reason for the bounty hunter to take Archer was because he wanted the money the Klingons were willing to pay. why? to get his freighter back. Listening to him talk so fondly about a spaceship that it even reminded my sister of Mal and how much affection he had for Serenity.

I spent the day at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center today. So, all the spacey-ness reminded me of Firefly--especially seeing some of the test stands. Especially the giant Saturn 5 test stand.

But what really got me was when I was in a lecture on biological crystal growth and a this guy walked in the room to interrupt the instructor and he was wearing blue gloves!!! Two by two, hands of blue.

Turns out he was the guy in charge of getting us donuts.

The blue hand guys are everywhere. I was walking into the food court today when I spotted a man with blue hands. Obviously the first thought in my mind was "two by two ...". When suddenly, there was a second man also with blue hands. Of course they turned out to be paramedics taking care of a patient, but those blue vinyl gloves have got to go!

I often doodle in math class (betting it‘s the cause of my falling grade), well, after a few minutes I really looked at what I was doing and noticed I had made little sketches of Serenity, the firefly logo, distant planets, and some globy scribble thing I just called “Firefly protein”. Then, on my way home from class I was listening to Neko Case and Chuck Mangione in the car-- loudly. Now I can’t hear either of their music and not think of firefly.

I also recommend Dar Williams music for anyone interested.

Yes! "Whip the Blankets" is my Wash song. I've got all Neko's solo albums. You must get them. Or I can rip them for you and we'll work something out.

I have all Dar except the newest.

I got my DSL working again so I went to check out Succatash’s vids last night...

http://www.strangefinger.com/firefly.html

Oh my god! Those Haken vids have to be the funniest things I’ve ever, ever, ever seen!!! *giggles incessantly* Hee, hee!

But the anti-Haken worked his way into my dreams last night and sang to me. It was all very strange and made me think of Firefly.

I would wake in a terrible sweat if the anti-Haken appeared in my dreams.
That creepy clown scares the shit out of me.

I reminded myself of Firefly this morning when I woke up with a start from a phone call. I needed to help a friend find the correct driving route to Denver, but I couldn't remember the name of the connecting road between spanish fork utah and green river utah. (hwy 6) Anyway, in the process of running around looking for the right map, I came across a full-length mirror, and scared myself with the Shepherd-Book-sized hair that appeared.

I was at work Saturday and we had a big deal thing going on-- Mercedes rented out the whole museum and hired us to make them a film. So, we're getting set up, getting white balance and such and my headset jack wasn't work so I wouldn't be able to do any interviews and all I could say was "Just once I'd like for things to go according to the gorram plan!!!"

gotta say, Kaylee has caused us all to look at strawberries in a new light. can't just buy any old package of them at Cub anymore either. if at least five are not the most perfect specimen in the verse (i.e., exactly like the one she had) then really, why bother?

... ANYWAY, before I could change the channel, Mal was asking the blonde for the engagement ring back, since she wasn't going to marry him, and he wanted to get his snowblower out of hock before winter ...

... also, a couple days ago Blast From the Past was on, and saw him again.

only every gorram minute of the day, but in particular the latest Tracy Chapman tune brought Jayne to mind. Particularly the third verse.

Some say you’re crazy
Say that you’re no good
But I think you’re cute and misunderstood
And I wouldn’t change you if I could

[bold]Chorus[/bold]
Let’em talk you down, call you names
My mind's made up, it ain't gonna change
I’m sure in my heart, happy and free
you're the one, you're the one
you're the one for me.

Some say you’re bitter
Think you’re mean
Uncouth untamed and unrestrained
But I think you’re sensitive and sweet
Stay as you are don’t change a thing

Some say you’re bawdy
Wicked and wild
A restless useless juvenile
But I think you’re funny and I like your smile
Want to be with you want you to stay awhile

A no ‘count mixed up Amount to nothing
A day away from a bum on the street
Some low class kind of royalty
That’s what they say about you
When they’re talking to me

Some say you’re bad
A bad bad seed
You love to play with fire you love gambling
But I know what you love and I know what you need
And I like it when you play with me

Say, has anyone done a vid of this yet?

I found the way, by the sound of your voice--so many things to say.

Have any of you seen that commercial, it's for some kind of pain killer, I want to say excedrin. But anyway, there's this lady who does it, and I've seen it possibly a dozen times, and everytime I saw, I kept thinking to myself, "I've seen that woman somewhere." I just couldn't remember. Then, it finally hit me. It was that black woman, the woman who cried witch in Safe. I felt so relieved once I figured that out.
Also, I don't know why, but on the cover of this book, "The Watcher," there's a picture of this girl who reminds me of River. And also the girl on the cover of the CD, "Gutterflower," The Goo Goo Dolls, reminds me of our favorite psychic/psychotic girl in the 'verse.

I've been lurking on this board for a while now and I couldn't help posting after reading everyone else's posts. So let's see. Gina Torres was a hooker in an old episode of Law and Order. The guy who was Jubel Early in Objects in Space is a prosecuter in the old episodes of Law and Order. There's a Doctor Tam's office that I pass by every day when I go to work. Anytime anyone says the word shindig or shiny, no matter what the context. Oh yeah and yesterday I got to say "that's a recipe for unpleasantness" and I was real excited.

I was looking through Richard Bolles' What Color is Your Parachute? in part of that book's systematic approach to job-hunting. No, I don't hate my job. I think of my future. Anyway, I started to consider the type of place I would like to work in. hey you guys :o)
just wanted to say: what a great site you all created and keep alive and interesting! fireflyfans became a site i check out every day :o)

i didn't think that could even happen, but firefly comes even more to my mind
in my daily life, since i found that website ( www.wavsite.com) and downloaded lots (and i mean really lots) of little quotations and sayings from the firefly-episodes. now everytime my pc starts (i replaced that stupid windows-starting-noise with "Oh my God! What could it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing? (pause) Oh, right, that would be me. Back to work.") and with every first IM i get ("What did I say to you about barging into my shuttle?" "That it was manly and impulsive?"
"Yes, precisely, only the exact phrase I used was DON'T.") - i can't help but smiling.
and that sure is a good way of starting the day :o)

... hmmm i can try to describe, it certainly depends on your (woah ... brb, just get my dictionary :o)) ---> system software! it's really easy, kaythryn, unless i use totally wrong words which i hope i won't ;o)) i don't have an english software on my pc, but it should be something like this (at least at win98 SE, win2000 & winXP):
start - settings - system control - then something like "audio and sound" - once you're there find the tab which says "sounds" and you find a list with all the sounds your pc does. it probably starts with the windows-sounds. you can now simply replace them with the soundfile you downloaded. take over (??) and safe and you're done :o)

I was flipping TV channels and landed on a movie called Code Name:Wolverine. The first thing I saw was Jubal Early talking to somebody about a kidnapping. I kept expecting him to say, "...does that seem right to you?"

I'm looking forward to the DVDs too, even though I've got a set from TRS80 (generously lent to me from LOSTANGEL), and I'm making my own copies, as well as putting the other three eps on DVD. I'm especially looking forward to watching the episodes without the frequent FOX logo in the corner... Unfortunately, I hate the thought of any of my money going to Fox to buy the DVDs. Maybe I'll shoplift the set... or better yet, hijack the truck that's delivering them...

OFFICER 1: Can you describe the guy?
Truck Driver: He was tall, blonde, and was wearing a long brown coat. He kept asking me where the "gorram Firefly DVD sets" were... I never heard of Firefly, have you?
OFFICER 2: No, is it some kind of kids program?
OFFICER 1: I don't know. So what was taken?
Truck Driver: That's the weird thing. That's all he took. He moved thousands of dollars of DVDs to take just those Firefly thingys...
OFFICER 2: Maybe we should find out what's so important about this "Firefly" show...

A friend of mine came over today and was gushing on about his new girlfriend.. Apparently she insists on washing him, shaving him, manicuring his nails, massaging him then sexing him each and every day....

Now, my wife is not quite as enthusiastic as my friends new slave girl..

The thing that came to my mind whilst my friend was gushing on and on was "Our Mrs Reynolds" when Wash and Zoe came into the Mess while Safron was feeding Mal. Safron suggesting that Zoe could make a meal for her husband. Wash's response "How Quaint" while looking sheepishly at Zoe.

Does this make sense? I chuckled in my head at the time..

I told my wife this story and she gave me the same look Zoe gave Wash when Safron first made the suggestion...

Mal - "Whats it say in there about divource?"

whoa - now that's a bit of deja vu if I ever heard it.

i saw Sinbad over the weekend and even despite being an animated feature, found myself thinking, "Man! Sinbad is like Mal with a goatee."

it's pitiful, people...just plain pitiful.

Yes, it should have been with a "K', but "Caylee" was good enough for me to enter my Serenity zone.

I was pouring milk onto my cereal at breakfast this morning when I suddenly thought of Firefly. I don't know why.

But what I do know is that the milk ended up everywhere but on the cereal....

Book: “A duel?”
Wash: “With swords?”
Simon: “The Captain's a good fighter, he must know how to handle a sword?”
Zoe: “I think he knows which end to hold.”

I was at Border's, writing down the name of an author for a book I was going to check out at the library. The author's first name was "Jane" Something, only I started spelling it with a "Y" in the middle without even thinking.

During "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" Sean Connery used the word "notion" in a sentence. I don't remember what he said because in my head I heard Mal's voice saying, "That's the notion."

So at my work I have a little dinosaur (stegosaurus) that I like to play with. It sits next to my computer moniter in plain view of anyone who may walk by. I enjoy reliving Wash's mad little scene at the beginning of the pilot. So anyway, today, a really cute little red-haired girl (who I have been smiling and making eyes at for a few days - a real Gu nian zhong de gu nian) comes over to my desk and gives me another little dinosaur (stegosaurus) that breaks apart into puzzle pieces. I was extremely pleased and struck at how fortunate I was, and let's not forget that momentarily and immediately upon receiving her gift I was struck by Firefly. Everything about that dino means Firefly to me. Not only because of the aforementioned, but the first dino (that sits on my desk - now with a new friend) was recently given to me by a fabulous fan here at FFF, whom I won't name because then everybody'd be hittin' her up for gifts. Also, it gave me a great opportunity/excuse to go and talk to her later on. Let me just say that I am in love, and you are all the first to know.

Spoiler Alert:

While watching "Pirates of the Caribbean"

Johnny Dep has a line where he says (to the effect) "A ship is not a keel and sails. That is what a ship has, but it is not what it is. Its freedom."

Cut to Mal showing Zoe around Serenity the first time, in Out of Gas.

Not of Firefly, but of our Browncoats here:

Was working on a project for work this morning and needed the name of a female astronaut. First one I happened up on was Kathryn Sullivan and I had to type it four times to get it to be not "Kaythryn."

Kaythryn. The red-head with the hand cannon.
