It's a hard pick for me, because they're all awesome, but probably I'd have to say War Stories. It had a ton of action and was hilarious. What about yours?

I always tell people it's whichever episode I've watched most recently. I guess that means the pilot right now--my niece and I made my sister watch it last night. (I let my niece borrow the first two discs over the weekend. She went out and bought the season immediately.)

Yet again I'll put in the standard lonely vote for 'Safe'. The Simon/River scenes are so transcendently beautiful, including "you gave up everything to find me, but then you found me broken", River dancing, and especially the rescue scene where Simon was prepared to give his life for River, and from which our Big Damn Heroes were born.

Also, it's the episode where the crew first truly becomes family, it has flashbacks, it has cows - what's not to love?

yes, but I notice your quote: "so this is what going mad feels like" comes from Jaynestown.

The Jayne song alone brought tears to my eyes.

However, the banter going on when Mal meets his "wife" in Mrs. Reynalds is pretty hysterical.

They are all very good and the more you watch them all the more you realise how little snippets of dialogue relate to the series as a whole, making the show even better!!! However for pure TV pleasure I must say :
OBJECTS IN SPACE is perhaps my favourite. It played so well on the mystery of River and introduced one of the best characters; 'Jubal Early'

Repeating what's already been said, this is gorram hard. Now if you asked for my top ten, well, that'd be a little bit easier...

If you put a gun to my head, I'd have to go with Objects In Space.

Now if we use laws os physics to entertain the notion that more than one object can exist in the same space, my favourite changes to:

i can't beleive it!!! only one person put "OUT OF GAS" on their list (way to go ANNIE). Come on!!! "Out of Gas" is the first episode where you really see how the crew of serenity is becoming a family and where they start to realize it as well.

AND I QUOTE:

Mal: "you all will be here when I wake up?"
(everyone nods)
Mal: "good"
---snore---

not to mention the flashback scenes that tell us the beginnings of the crew. (ha ha: wash had a mustache!!!) you see how the whole crew came together and you see how Kaylee joined the crew ("sorry captain...She's hot for engines") it's just such an awesome episode!!! there are just soo many of the great firefly moments we travelers crave for on this episode!!! Not to mention a big battle wound for Mal!!!

so here's my list of favs with the first one being the best:
1) "OUT OF GAS" (If you don't know why yet, you ain't been payin' no attention)
2) "OUR MRS.REYNOLDS" (does this really need an explanation -- it's just plain awesome!!!)
3) "OBJECTS IN SPACE" (you get to see River's perspective on things which is gorram interestin')

This is a good land. And we shall call it .... this land.

I have to agree with The Somnambulist, though, that in "Objects in Space" we have the most interesting of secondary characters: Jubal Early.

I know I have done this before on another thread. I always differentiate between favorite and best. Great films can have enormous impact but not be much fun. Favorite films are the ones you want to watch over and over, because you love them.

So it is hard to argue that Out of Gas, Serenity and Objects are not the best.

But the question here is favorite - I love War Stories, Our Mrs Reynolds, Serenity and Jaynestown in that order.

See how I'm not punching him, I think I've grown!

Out of Gas - without a doubt.

What's not to love? I love the way the past present and future all exist in one episode, distinguished by a different colour tone. Kaylee's introduction to the crew is wonderful. The moment in which Inara tells Mal that he doesnt't have to die alone to which he replies "Everybody dies alone" is so moving. Mal bleeding to death alone on the ship - that in itself is a interesting story, but the fact that we get to see how the crew came together is a shiny bonus

Nothing can beat this

Oh and Nathan Fillion happens to agree with me on this one.
Morena Baccarin's favourite is Heart of Gold

I'd just thought I'd mention it since they answered the question at the Birmingham screening Q&A

Hmmm.... my favorites (in no particular order) are:
*Objects in Space, because of the unique perscpective we get from River, the beautiful relatiosnhip building in the teaser, the equaly beautiful bu subtle character interaction in the closer, Juabl Early's delightful comments. Also, it was nice to see how much everyone (even Jayne, to an extent) does appreciate River. I love River's line in the teaser: "It's just an object. It's not what you think." That was a visually stunning scene, seeing the branch and the flower petals.
* Serenity, if for no other reason than the screligious way Mal walks in and kills the fed adgent when he has a gun to River's head. And Wash's dinosaurs. I can't see why Fox disliked this pilot. It was an excellent introduction. A bit preachy at time, but still excellent.
* Our Mrs. Reynolds, I read somewhere that Joss considers this the best script he's ever written, and I can see why. The humor was excellent. It was delight, watching all the characters react to Mal's accidental bride. I'm a big Mal/Inara fan, so this episode was a real treat for me. The relationship building in this episode was so subtle and natural, a perfect part of the plot without being overpowering.
* Ariel, just because it was so tight in terms of polit. Everything fit together so well.

The great thing about this series is that there's not a singel episode I dislike. There are exceptional episodes, but no episodes that make me want to turn the TV off and run away.

Well ...

When I was all alone in my Fireflydome and wasn't tainted by knowing what the rest of the world thought, "Out Of Gas" was by far my favorite episode. But there are very few episodes that couldn't in some way be my favorite... I'm just not good at picking favorites.

I can, however, say this for sure. "Shindig" is without a doubt my least favorite episode. Even though I watch it as religiously as the others, it bores me because everything has this dull, obvious, "irony" to it that is completely mind numbing. "I get how they do it I just ain't gettin the why." "I'll take on the job." I love the scene with Banning, Destra, Kavot and Zell (Please pardon the spelling), as well as other scenes. But the line "He's being toyed with" is just nerve raking, and if the line "Besides, why would I want to leave Serenity" were filled with any more blatant, intentional cheesy irony I would vomit and probably hate the show. It is that bad.

Yeah cool things happen, but I can barely make it through the episode. And after reading Jane Espenson's editorial comments (with the exception of a very classy few) in "Finding Serenity" I can understand why it is so fake.

Well, like most (if not all) Browncoats, I pretty much love all the episodes. Put a gun to my head, and I'd have to choose Objects in Space. It's different than the others, more cerebral, with fantastic writing, by far the most interesting guest character, and I love seeing everything through River's POV.

But really, my favorite episode depends on my mood. If I'm in the mood for comedy, Our Mrs. Reynolds or Jaynestown; more serious drama, Out of Gas or Objects in Space; action, Ariel or Heart of Gold.

Let's face it though: one of the reasons Firefly is so great is that each episode shares plenty of all these things. I could no more pick a true "favorite" than I could tell you Yosaffbridge's real name.

The only one I didn't really like was the message, due to the plot holes which really hurt suspension of disbelief on my part.

THE HERO OF CANTON!

THE ONE THEY CALL JAAAAYNE!

It still makes me laugh, even after the 10th viewing! More one-liners than you can shake a herring at! The line, "next time, let's all go to a crappy town where I'm the hero!", is my personal favourite one-liner of all time!

Also, the Mal and (drunken) Wash entrance onto Serenity, when they are met by Zoe, is brilliant! Wash's giggling fits are comedy timed to perfection.

I realise that it lacks clever plotting and all that jazz, but let's be honest here; who expected there to be a statue of Jayne in the centre of town when they first watched the episode? Now that is clever plotting!

It is also a mainline station for the less obvious characters to develop their own subplots; so we get extension lines built into Kaylee snogs Simonsville and we meet the Emotion Express to Jaynestown. This kind of episode may not further the darker plot elements, but it lets you identify with the humanity of the characters and hence you like them more!

It's also the best episode to watched pissed!

Let's all go to a crappy town where i'm the hero!

Very hard choice, but I'd say "Out of Gas." I love the scene where Zoe says there's something about Wash that she doesn't like. I crack up everytime I see it! Like has been mentioned, there's not a single episode I dislike. One of my favorite moments is in Trash with Mal just sitting in the middle of nowhere completely nude. And he doesn't even care! I also love how you see the outcome of the job first, then the episode comes full circle and catches up with the first line. Mal boarding the ship naked in front of his crew is priceless!

Also, I love Shindig.

In order, I think it'd have to be:
1) Out of Gas
2) The Message
3) Serenity
4) Our Mrs. Reynolds or Trash

Out of Gas and The Message get me kind of emotional. Out of Gas of course gives so much backstory to the ship and its crew, and gets me endeared to all the different characters. Plus that, the progression of the episode from start to finish is just done so well. I mean, it's darting around all over the place to explain where each character comes from, explain the ship's problem, and the present with Mal semi-daydreaming while trying to get the catalyzer into the engine. You also get to see the level of loyalty the crew has for one another...

Anyway, before I drone on about that, The Message was good for many of the same reasons, but it also hints at one of my favourite things about the series. You hear all these references to the war, but there are only two direct battle sequences. Everything else is about the long-term effects of war on the soldiers who fight them. From Mal's wish to push further on out in the system, to small things like Zoe and Mal cutting into their apples. But Tracey was like that all over: he was never a fighter, and even though he survived the war it still killed him.

Serenity and Our Mrs. Reynolds I enjoy mostly because they were my initial introductions to the series. Our Mrs. Reynolds and Trash I liked since Saffron is by far my favourite guest character.

But yeah, like what most other folks here already said, I love all the episodes. Objects in Space used to be at the bottom of my list (though I still liked it) until I rewatched it. Now I think Train Job might be at the bottom... and I still think it's a wonderfully-done episode. KF

3. The Message. No else mentioned this ep. I dunno why, It sounds depressing I know but I liked it. It did kind of feel like it was the funeral of the whole series and the whole music in the background when they brought Tracy's body to his family, just broke my heart.

Hey now, I mentioned The Message, and I'm still at odds on whether I'd place it in the #1 or #2 slot {^^}. I thought it did an incredible job of showing how war affects a man in the long-term--not just through the fighting, but through the psychology of loss. And, after reading the script for Dead or Alive, I see some of the better elements there were worked into The Message.

A lot of folks point out the plotholes in it but, meh, I'm just not seeing 'em. KF

LMAO! I love that! Now only if i actually had the DVD....

Anyways this is a hard decision of wich is my fav. Jaynetown is pretty funny.

I think right now I'm gonna have to say the one where they rob the hospital and Jayne gets greedy trying to turn over Simon and River to the feds. The Hands of Blue guys in this episode are just really crazy. Only thing I'm really wondering about those guys is why did they kill every one that talked to River? For what reasons?

Anyways that's the episode I'm liking the most at the moment. I love them all though. I got a Birth Day coming up soon. I'm gonna buy the DVD for sure. well unless they do another marathon so I can just tape them all.... Didn't think about doing that earlier...

Comedically my favorite HAS to be "Our Mrs. Reynolds." Everyone, especially Nathan Fillion, did a great job with the comedic timing in that one.

Otherwise I have to go with "Heart Of Gold" because it delved deeper into the tension between Mal and Inara as well as focusing on Mal himself.

My favorite for comdey is "Trash" I love it when Mal calls Saffron (or whatever you want to call her) Yosafbridg. That cracks me every time!! Pretty much everything said in that episode is perfect!

I like "War Stories" because of the action. And because you get a hint of what River is capable of.

I really do have to say, though, that "Out of Gas" is the most well-done episode. The filming and the cuts were seamless, which really made the episode amazing.

Objects in Space. Near perfect with an excellent bad guy. Favourite bit is where Jayne rolls over and uncovers his "wall of guns". You think, "Hooray, Jayne's gonna get the bad guy!", but he's just wrapping the blanket around himself to get comfy - so funny!

That being said, I always introduce new watchers to "Our Mrs Reynolds". They always start out by thinking it's about Mal being nasty to his innocent new wife and getting a few laughs from the situation, and it turns into a whole other type of episode.

Then they usually want to see another so I continue with the Saffron thread and show them "Trash". I think these are more accessible to new watchers than the pilot, which is a bit slow (though still marvellous - don't throw me into the engine intake!)

He left the name, at which the world grew pale.

If I was on an island and could only have one Firefly ep with me, I'd have to choose "Our Mrs. Reynolds". Humor, drama, peril, great acting, tons of quotables... Just my fav ep.

Now if I was forced to dump an ep (maybe throw it out to get a whole new ep, that would be an interesting thread), I'd dump "The Message". Too much repeating the same dialog, so many holes, makes to many crew members look dense beyond their means...

Just like what seems to be an increasing number of people I'm going to have to go with Objects in Space. I am a new fan of the show and bought the DVD after seeing Serentiy (against my better judgement to see the movie first). But after seeing all the episodes (and all of them are great) there is just something about Objects in Space, Early is a great character.

Does that seem right to you?

Purely for the war flashback...

Zoe: The first rule of battle, little one, don't never let them know where you are...

[Mal comes screaming backward]

Mal: I'm right here! I'm right here! I'm comin' in...... Woo Hoooo...

Zoe: 'Course there are other schools of thought.

Mal: That was bracing.... They don't like it when you shoot at them. I worked it out myself.

I think out of gas is my overall favourite, I'm a sucker for flashbacks and it has them aplenty, its also got love and family and conflict and danger (even the hundreth time I watch it.)

jaynestown is my favourite for comedy and general jayneness, how can that be a bad thing?

and objects in space is infinately watchable, largely for early; and every single time I almost believe that river has become serenity.
"they didn't want her here, but she couldn't make herself leave, so she melted"- breaks my heart...

but that said, even the least good episodes are a hell of a lot better than anything else on tv.

I've also been thinking lately about which is the most balanced episode and I think maybe its the message. despite what others have said I don't see plot holes, rather I see the characters at their best and all the elements which make the series great included- comedy, tradgedy and real emotion...

Oh, crap! Not another critical decision. I hate being put on the spot like this. Hmmmmm. It's so hard to choose because they're all so good. Each has it's special moments and memorable lines.
Enough procrastination, here goes:
Serenity
Our Mrs. Reynolds Jaynestown tie for second.
Out of Gas War Stories tie for third (Hey! Cut me some slack here!)
Ariel
Objects in Space
The Message
Trash
The Train Job
Bushwacked
Safe

My favorite episodes fall in this order:

Serenity
Out of Gas
Safe
Ariel
The message
Jaynestown
War Stories

Though, I have to admit, even if I don't like the character Jayne, Jaynestown was the funniest of all the episodes.

I love the scene where they 1st came upon the statue of Jayne...that was great, and Simon had a look on his face that suggested that there was something very wrong in the universe

And I love Mal's comment about the statue staring at him like he owed it something.

The funniest scene ever was when they were drinking in that bar and some old guy on the stage started playing some folk song about Jayne.

The whole crew sat there looking dumbstruck.
Simon, by now really had a look like everything he had ever been told about the universe was so completly wrong, and the LOOK on Kelley and Wash's face was priceless, especially when the crowd joined in singing the song, the camera quickly switched to Wash's face and he looked astounded; it was great! I nearly strangled on a bowl of cereal laughing; I thought I was gonna die!

...and he robbed from the rich and he gives to the poor, the hero of Katon, the man they call Jayne!

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyhow, I felt sorry for Jayne later....it was the first time in the whole series that I had some compassion for the guy, he was bothered by that kid taking that shotgun round for him. I guess he has feelings after all.

Serenity (the pilot) and Objects in Space compete for my affections.

I'd say Serenity was the best Firefly episode ever, and Objects in Space was the best episode ever. Serenity has the best plot, the Firefly moments that made me fall in love with it, and it's just...just so very shiny, gorramit!

Objects in Space was the most beautifully shot. It showed so much of casual life on Serenity, which is nice. Early is genius writing. River's point of view is excellent. Book becomes even more intriguing. And the end shot...*swoon*

They correspond to my two favourite characters. Serenity is Mal's episode, Mal's story. It introduces you to Mal's life, Mal's crew, Mal's ship, and Mal's ship's stowaways. Objects in Space is River of course, and like her, it has an unusual structure with many secrets.

All the rest (minus HoG) come in third. That's how awesome Firefly is.

---------------------------------------------------
Early: Where'd she go?

Simon: I can't keep track of her when she's NOT incorporeally possessing a spaceship, don't look at me --

As everyone's mentioned, it's almost impossible to choose. I LOVE THEM ALL!

However these are my fave faves:

1. Out of Gas. I just like seeing where all the people come from, and the part at the end where Mal picks Serenity even though the guy's trying to sell him a different ship -- it's so cute. I love it.

2. The Message. I love the flashbacks to the war, and when Tracy first wakes up screaming when Simon cuts into him I was so shocked. Also, it's got some of my fave one-liners, like River's "My food is problematic" and Jayne's oh-so-pretty hat.
I don't see plot holes but I'm not really an analyzer.

3. Jaynestown. My all-time fave comedic episode. So many classic one-liners and it's one of the first times that you notice that Jayne has levels. "This must be what going mad feels like."

Those are my top ones but as I said, I love them all.

Also, the end is just so sad. I really think it's just gorgeous.
Second favorite: "Jaynestown". Lots of Jayne. Really don't need any other reason to watch it. Oh yeah, it's funny too.

If I'm to be asked which episode I think is best made, the answer would be "Out of Gas", but which one is my favourite?

"Jaynestown" hands down. For following reasons:

- Simon/Kaylee snuggled up on the bench, not looking too innocent
- Simon tells Kaylee the whole engine grease ordeal
- River corrects the bible (the most *brilliant* sceene *ever*)
- Book's hair
- Jayne's a "hero" LMAO

My favourite has to be Objects In Space. The opening sequence alone sends shivers down my spine where you get glimpses into each of the characters most hidden thoughts.

Oh and that birds eye view of River surrounded by the leaves, holding the stick/gun and saying something along the lines of 'It's just an object'... I always get the sense that something quite profound has just occurred. Plus, the lines are so, so clever.

However, like misskitten said, the best made episode is Out of Gas. It's so emotionally charged that you can't brush it off with 'ahh, he's the main character and there are more episodes after this, he'll make it' because I don't know about anyone else but there was a moment when I seriously had my doubts.

Like most people here, it's hard to nail down that one fave since they're all so good. But as far as episodes that stand out, for me it's always going to be "Our Mrs. Reynolds".

I hadn't even HEARD of Firefly until about a week before Serenity opened, and the Sci Fi channel was showing all of the Firefly episodes back to back one day. I don't have cable, and I was over at my parents' house for dinner, and my father had the TV on that channel while we were all in the kitchen. I payed the show no mind while I was eatting, but then after dinner we went back into the living room, and "Our Mrs. Reynolds" was just starting.

At first, I had this flippant attitude toward it, thinking something along the lines of: "Oh great...another space show that'll put me to sleep like so many others..." But I was full and in no hurry, so I sat back and started watching...

I WAS BLOWN AWAY!

The characters, the dialogue, the humor, the acting, the special effects, the settings, Inara...hellfire was I blown away! Sadly, I couldn't hang around and see the following episodes, but seeing that single one convinced me to go see Serenity that weekend.

Several viewings of Serenity, purchasing the Firefly box set, getting the novel, getting the visual companion, and owning both of the soundtracks on CD later...I'm still just as infatuated with all of this...and it's all, ultimately, thanks to the "Our Mrs. Reynolds" episode.

So if I have to pick just one, it'd be this episode. This episode hooked me, the movie reeled me in, and all the rest continued to run a stringer through my mouth. Please don't throw me back!

I'll add another #1 vote for Out of Gas - the best television entertainment EVER made, imho. I've watched it probably a dozen times and still it holds me entranced each time. It looks beautiful, the lines are great, the music, the characters, the story, the lighting, the pace. It's just incredible.

After that, Serenity, OiS, Ariel, War Stories, and OMR.

I must admit I'm also rather fond of the Train Job. I love the bar fight and the banter between Zoe and Mal. (Can I have your share? No. If you die can I have your share? Yes.) The train/ship fx are great. Sure, some exposition, but I'll watch Train Job before HoG, Safe, or Shindig. Of course, I will watch those right after.

Wow....tough one. I love Firefly so much that chosing a favorite is really hard. I think I can narrnow it down to two; Out of Gas for incredible drama, and Our Mrs. Reynolds for humor.

Out of Gas is one of the most moving stories I've ever seen; Nathan's acting was amazing, the music was beautiful, the editing was great, and most importantly the story had an incredible emotional impact. It makes me love that crew so very much, and Mal.....wow.

Our Mrs. Reynolds is just plain perfect Firefly with an extra-special dollop of hilarity thrown in:)

"Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells you when she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home." .......We love you, captain

"Now, if I'm not back in an hour, I want you to take this ship, take off... and you come and you rescue me!"

"This is the captain. We may experience some slight turbulence and then.....explode"

The script in my subjective opinion is easily the best written of all of them and it made River my favorite character and I dont care what anyone says Jubal Early is hands down best guest character in the series. No one even comes close.

I will say that Out of Gas is a close second for me. Loved the flash backs and the look on Mal's face when he first sees Serenity is priceless.

I have to go with Out of Gas - I could watch Mal wrap himself up in that blanket over and over again....and let's not forget the great music in that episode. I just love how the episode is put together. The "hands up" sequey to the Jayne flashback with the "hands up" in real time is great.

For laughs, Our Mrs. Reynolds is right up there with Jaynestown. I especially like the ribbing when Saffron first appears on ship.

As for memorable moments, I love Serenity II when Mal shoots the government mole as he walks on board the ship - the timing there is great!

Most of Wash's lines fit into the "memorable moment" category with "What is she doing here" up at the top.

I have got to thank my teenage sons for getting their sister and me hooked on this thing....already many Firefly dollars in the hole and loving every cent spent!

Not mine. Though "Heart of Gold" isn't necessarily the most powerful or well written of the 14, I like it WAY more than "The Message". I mean, come on...Mal finally gets himself some action, Inara has a breakdown (and Morena Baccarin is a damn fine actress in playing that scene so effectively! Makes me wanna comfort her myself everytime I watch it), plenty of gun shooting and action (Wash was pretty funny in foiling the henchmen), and good ol' Jayne was cool as ever in that episode ("I'm in!").

Not knocking your opinion at all, but I think we've got at least a few fans of the "Heart of Gold" episode. I like it myself, but "Our Mrs. Reynolds" is my personal fave. Aside from all the humor and just overall goodness of the episode, Saffron is just one hot little momma and a cool character. Should this series ever return, and I am literally praying that it does, she could pop up several times a season and I'd never get tired of her.
