It's in my head.

I can't get rid of it.

It's driving me crazy.

I saw the BDM three times and now I've got the Fruity Oaty Bar jingle stuck in my head, and I can't shut it off!

What makes it worse is, I don't know all the lyrics; just one line, which I repeat over and over.

If I knew the whole thing, maybe I could get it out of my skull! Fellow Browncoats, please help me before my wife has to kill me!

I caught these two lines:

"Fruity Oaty bars
makes a man out of a mouse.
Fruity Oaty bars
makes you bust out of your blouse."

Alas, I can't help. I commiserate, though - that kind of thing happens to me all the time (but it hasn't happened yet with that particular song.)

Sure hope I don't catch it - that would be pretty horrific, the Fruity Oaty jingle over and over forever.

I find what usually gets songs out of my head is to listen to them on CD. Is the soundtrack out for the BDM, and if so does it have the jingle?

The exact same thing is happening to me. One line, over and over. I may have to drill a hole in my head to get it out.

I know. When I saw it for the first time, I thought it was creepy as hell even without the subliminal message attached to it. The design of the octopus was meancing even though it was done pretty basically. And it was only the fifth time around that I realized they were singin in English and not Chinese.

I thought that commercial was scarier than the Reaver's actually.

"Fruity Oaty Bars, Pow! Hey!
Fruity Oaty Bars,
Make a man out of a mouse,
Make you bust out your blouse,
Eat them now, Bang! Ping! Zow!
- Try Fruity, Oaty Bars."

I think it mutated a little by the time it reached the screen, but who cares? I was not alone in my suffering -- and now there is hope of a treatment! Bless you all!

One last report: Saw the BDM for the fourth time today, and managed to make out the lyrics as presented on screen:

Fruity Oaty Bars/make a man out of a mouse/
Fruity Oaty Bars/make you bust out of your blouse/
Eat them all the time/they will blow your mind/
Blow your little mind--

At this point the jingle dies out as River enters her fugue state.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me. I've managed to bring the echo in my head down to managable levels.

Now if I could only drive The Ballad of Jayne out of my consciousness...

Glad to hear it - after my 3rd BDM viewing last night, it's going to take a crowbar to get that jingle out of my head. But at least having it in there isn't as unpleasant as I'd thought it would be.

Yes, yes, with the third viewing comes evangelical mode (and apparently, a Fruity Oaty Bar Jingle fugue state). Go bring the good news of Serenity to a waiting world.
Bwaa haa ha, just kidding. There was a post on the OB about what scary proselytizing zombies we all are. Now here's evidence of the brainwashing as well. We'll all probably see it enough times to quote the differences between the script and screen versions of any line.

Ha! I didn't know it was English either! (I figured out the "fruity oaty bar" part only after reading on one of the boards (and then, it fit nicely into my memory of the song, but the rest was still a mystery)
I will listen intently next time I hear the song though

btw, to the person who asked about the soundtrack, the jingle is not on there.

and on the OB, someone posted a pic of the fruity oaty bar t-shirt, maybe if you find one, you will lift the burden of the [*tune being stuck in your head* (there's a word for that, not "earbug" but something similar I think)] from your brain.

Hey, I see over here in the "Serenity DVD Details..." thread:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=13655

The DVD is supposed to include this:
"We'll Have a Fruity Oaty Good Time" - 1 minute 35sec (Rated PG)

I'm hoping this is the ad. That'd be handy for scrubbing the tune out of your head, maybe?

I think it would make a fine ring tone, and then it would go viral and affect the entire population, who would all run to the movie! Tippee! How do we get it to morph into a ring-tone [inow?/i]

Has anyone else noticed the brief appearance of the Operative in the flash of images when River is triggered by "the [Oaty Bar/i]"?

Should I quote a really bad song and try to get that stuck in your head instead of Fruity/Oaty? Gilligan's Island? The Night Chicago Died? Bad,Bad, Leroy Brown? A little Abba maybe? Mandy? What's your pleasure in pixelated karaoke?

For some reason, the Fruity Oaty Bar jingle reminds me of one that was on TV when I was a kid:

Bum, Bum, Bumble Bee,
Bumble Bee tuna,
Yum yum Bumble Bee,
Bumble Bee tuna...

Cadence isn't quite the same, but it's just as viral.

I tried very hard to catch the words on my last couple viewings. Here's my best take:

Fruity Oaty Bars,
Make a man out of a mouse.
Fruity Oaty Bars,
Make you bust out of your blouse.
Eat them all the time,
They will blow your mind...

Same idea, of course, and the sound is going sort of funny and distorted at that point. I think it's a little clearer when Mr. Universe replays it.

Now, can anybody explain why the words NOT MANDATORY appear on the screen behind the animated characters? Bad translation from Chinese, maybe? Sort of an "all your base" thing?

I figured it was some sort of hint that Alliance TV is very overtly authoritarian and they'd tell you at every step whether what they were talking about was required of all citizens or not. NOT MANDATORY suggested to me that citizens are not required by law to buy Fruity Oaty Bars, so the company that makes them clearly isn't bribing the right people.

hee hee

I did have one other interpretation - the words NOT MANDATORY appear, IIRC, for the "bust out of your blouse" bit where the woman eats a FOB and has an octopus hop out of her rapidly-expanding cleavage. Maybe the words mean something like the "Results Not Typical" micro-disclaimer you get with the ads for diet pills here in real life.

(on edit: I don't know if disclaimers like that exist in all countries here on earth-that-was. I live in the USA, which I hear is very similar to Real Life.)

Sorry to butt into the middle of this aging thread but... what you are "suggesting" is called "trephining," and I guarantee you it has been practiced by our cavedwelling troglodytish forebears for some... 10,000 years...

It's a German word, namely "Ohrwurm," meaning "Ear Worm," which is a word/phrase I've done Everything in My Power to insinuate into the English Language... I mean, as there's no freakkin' word in That English Language that quite manages to convey what ..."ohrwurm" manages to do...

Okay I've got a general question to anyone who's been as subliminally possessed by the F.O.B. jingle as I, umm... seem to have become... (I have succumbed, I'm sorry, "Violence will ensue")...

To Wit:

Has anybody seen anywhere that the jingle can be downloaded (legally - as I always wanna make sure Joss gets his fair cut for bein' a Frikkin' GEEENius)? It must be plugged into various nefariously subversive locations in my iTunes library to sneak up on unsuspecting listeners... kinda like the Spanish Inquisition, "BWAH-HAH-HAH!!!"

THINK! We are having a forum discussion about a TV series that was shown for less than 14 episodes.

Okay. So, what should we be gripping?

Got the DVD on Wednesday, and watched it three times. Must've lost my grip.

BTW, I love the show (and movie), and this is my first post here. Only good thing about my not having discovered this show sooner, was that I would've been disappointed to see it end so prematurely, contemporaneous to the event. As a late-comer, I got to read about it's demise (a few years after the fact, granted), before I got hooked.

You'll love it here. One big shiny family. I'm really impressed with this fanbase, too. How often does a cancelled tv show get made into a movie that is now a best-seller, with it's tv series that came out 3 years ago selling just as well? Boggles the mind!(in a good way!)

Thanks. I've been reading the posts for a few weeks before deciding to jump in, myself.

I sort of recall hearing about "Firefly" before it originally aired, but I never watched it -- probably because I heard a reference to the Companion character (and not being as "progressive" as many today), I opted not to watch.

My next brush with the Firefly universe was in seeing the trailer in August, while taking my nephew & niece to see some other film. I was so intrigued by the trailer, that I ran to see "Serenity" on the first day, Since then, I was hooked.

And thanks to the Sci-Fi channel, I'm getting to see the series.

While the show's not perfect, it's one of the best written (and acted) shows I've ever seen. The actors have done wonders with their characters, and it's a shame the series didn't last longer (or hasn't been subsequently renewed).

Check out the documentaries on the "Serenity" DVD, wherein Joss & the cast show up at last years Comicon in San Diego; I think the one I'm thinking of is called something like, "How Do You Paint a Firefly?"
In case you haven't heard the story, the convention booked the "Serenity" folks into the biggest space they had available. Five THOUSAND people showed up just for them (man, I was proud of the Browncoats that day) - stayed for the next presentation ('cause it was the Wachowski Brother' "V for Vendetta" and Natalie Portman & Joel Silver were both part of it, so... I mean.. c'MON... who wouldn't've stayed, eh?) and then, when the " for Vendetta" crowd left... the crowd all took off for all the subsequent presentations.

Anyway, one of the documentaries records that day and it's mighty impressive: Joss getting on stage to a THUNderous standing ovation, getting flustered & spinning around like he can't believe what's happening to him

Anyway... as you said,

A question for those who have found and viewed the easter egg:

Select to view spoiler:

The full ad features a Chinese man who is described by Joss as "the extraordinarily shamed gentleman who has not gotten the Fruity Oaty Bars and shamed his family".

Can anyone who speaks Chinese (presumably Mandarin chinese)translate what he says? I'm guessing it's something abot shaming his family by not buying Fruity Oaty Bars, but you never know.

Obsessing about a single instant in the obsession. Why hasn't this bloody commercial been in one of those conspiracy theory threads, I ask you....maybe we've all been programmed with an obsessive fan subliminal Joss had Zoic sneak in there.
No, this must be what going insane feels like.

Gaak, it's stuck in my head again. I watched it on slow mo' a few times before answering, and Sam I don't see a blue sun. There's a sort of wine colored expanding circle near the beginning, when the background photo shifts from the cartoon fruit trees to something that looks (to me) like palm trees in a hurricane, then the background switches to power station stacks, then to something that looks like a version of the optometrist's photo of your retina
http://www.stlukeseye.com/anatomy/Retina.asp
then River goes off into nightmare space where the reavers are...but I never saw a BlueSun.
BlueSun is like Beatrice Foods, isn't it. I remember reading about them. They had a 'go to sleep and trust us' vibe to their commercials then. Mwah haa ha. It was spooky how much they owned, and that concept of the mega-nested-corp hasn't exactly gone away. Ok, Ok, no more conspiracy theories, I promise.

My Chinese informant also says "jiao nian" doesn't make any sense. I believe it is should be "diu lian" (to lose face), as well.

BUT what gets me is the Japanese katakana on the Fruity Oaty Bar itself. It says "MA RA SE TA" which my Japanese informant says is also jibberish. At the top it says, "KO HA WA MA RA SE TA SU KA TE SA". More jibberish. I think they dropped to ball on this. They could've just as easily written "FU RU CHI O CHI"

Hi folks, I am not a Serenity fan, I am just warning about a serious infraction, a break in the traditional (and critical) separation between scifi fan geekdom and the rest of civilization.

Google landed me on this site because a radio station (89.7 FM) in San Jose today, I think its a college station, was playing some stupid jingle over and over and over for at least the last hour... and for some reason on my ride into work I could not turn it off.

All I could make out was "Makes a Man out of a Mouse" and "Makes your bust out of your blouse" and then something in Japanese.

I'm putting you all on warning! Stop this silliness!
