Only two come to mind as possibles for me...
Blade Runner and the original Planet Of The Apes.

Hmmmm....and maybe The Empire Strikes Back....but I don't think so.

And anyone says 2001 is gonna get kicked through an engine!!!!

And a last minute add on, the first ALIEN. ALIENS have been getting a lot of shout-outs, but the first one, I feel, is the best of the lot. Just pure, unfiltered suspense and atmospheric dread. The final scene with the Alien with Ripley in the escape pod is one of the most terrifying scenes in sci-fi history. THIS is the sci-fi Ridley Scott I can get behind.

I can actually only think of a few:

Blade Runner - this seems to be a consensus pick; Ridley Scott broke the mold with this film

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - simply a phenomenal film with great character development, superior editing, and superb (but not overblown) special effects. Easily the best of Star Trek films.

The Matrix - I remember when I first saw the trailer to this movie and I thought "Hmmm, Keanu Reeves and sci-fi..can it possibly get worse than Johnny Mnemonic?" Then I saw this film and was blown away. Hugo Weaving is perfect as Agent Smith.

The Empire Strikes Back - the best of the six, by far the best directing (being that Lucas didn't direct it)

Ghost in the Shell - yes, I know it's anime, but it is one hell of a ride. Also gave rise to a pretty decent sequel.

Aliens - James Cameron sure as hell knows how to make a good sci-fi flick with non-stop action.

Honorable Mention (not QUITE as good as Serenity, but worth seeing if you're a sci-fi fan)

Event Horizon - a great mix of sci-fi and horror; totally succeeded in freaking me out the first time I saw it

Akira - another anime classic

The Terminator series (any of the three) - yes, this includes III, which I thought was really short-changed by both critics and fans. Love the ending: John Connor cannot escape his fate.

Supernova - should have been better, but movie is saved by solid acting from James Spader and Angela Basset.

Strange Days - I really have a soft spot for this movie, mainly because it a had a cool concept and Ralph Fiennes is one hell of an actor.

Sorry...I've seen a bunch of films in my life, and when it comes to sci-fi I honestly can't think of one that tops Serenity. The movie solidified me into a fan of this whole 'verse!

I can think of some pretty good contenders for the top spot though...

Planet of the Apes and Beneath the Planet of the Apes (I have a crush on Linda "Nova" Harrison to this day, and I don't care if she may have grandkids my age!)

Nothing I've seen recently tops "Serenity", the original Star Wars Tilogy comes close, "Blade Runner" comes in a close second to the original Star Wars Trilogy. But honestly "Serenity" was the best movie I have been able to see in theaters since I've been old enough to go.

I can't think of any that are really better, but I'm quite fond of Red Planet and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, as well as some old favorites already named by others.

Before I saw the other responses, my first thought was Blade Runner. After that, the original Star Wars.

I'm a big fan of Star Trek (the whole franchise) but I like Firefly better. I don't think I would have liked it (Firefly) as much tho, if it hadn't been for ST, as FF is gritty, real, something I can identify more w/ (characters/plots and such...part of Joss's vision, as it turns out). If it hadn't been for ST tho, the sterile and mighty federation (FF being verymuch anti-gov), I'm not sure if I would have liked it as much.

hmmm

In all honesty I don't feel there's been a more complete 'Sci-fi' film than SERENITY.

Joss just about weaved the most well rounded 'world' of characters and back story to make his vision of 'a' future as believable as possible, and furthers it to make it extremely entertaining.

However there are close contenders.

TRON For being just so visionary when it was released and for just being about the most unique looking film ever!

Wow! Somebody besides me really likes this movie! I think it's just on the edge of being great, it was edited badly, and that might be why Walter Hill took his name off as director.
I LOVE the alternate ending- it should have been in the film itself!

Good question. Can't say they are as good as Serenity cause Serenity is my all time favorite.

How about:
1. the Original War of the Worlds (the Tom Cruise version was better and closer to the book, but the arrival of the Martians was so needlessly altered from the original story and so poorly concieved I can't even watch the movie again. Ruined, ruined it was. Oh look, nobody noticed the giant alien war machines under 5th Avenue in New York for a thousand years...)
2. The Black Hole (I love those robots...that movie just sucks you in).
3. Star Trek II
4. Star Wars Episodes 3 and 4 (with honorable mentions to 5,6, and 2...we could have skipped 1).
5. Babylon 5: In the Begininng (Not a great movie unless you are a really devoted B5 fan.)
6. Stargate (Which inspired the longest running TV show ever.)
7. Battlestar Galactica (The original pilot movie.)
8. Battle Beyond the Stars (Hokey yes, but I love that movie.)
9. Alien
10. The Postman (I was the only person in the entire world to see this movie in the theater. I loved it, but it'd have done better if released after 9/11. 2nd favorite movie of all time behind Serenity.)

This is an unpopular point of view, but I think the way Galaxy Quest made fun of sci-fi in general and it's fans might not have been the best idea in the long run.

When I saw that movie I was a college dropout (because of the 1.81 GPA I had managed) and working as a miserable, broken down night security guard. I was inspired. Finished my last two years of college in 11 months with a 3.9 GPA, lawschool on an academic scholarship, and now a dirty, lowdown prosecutor determined to violate the Constitutional rights of every speeder and drunk driver in "my City".

So I'd have to agree with you. Carry a leather mail bag instead of a briefcase every day and always keep a close eye on the guy who comes to fix our copy machine.

My all-time favorites are Star Wars (come on, it isn't A New Hope. It's just Star Wars) and Empire Strikes Back. Those two and Serenity exist as the pinnacle of sci-fi-ness. But some other contenders:

12 Monkeys - If only because it shows us that time travel really doesn't work.

Back to the Future - If only because it shows us that time travel is so very cool.

Aliens - I love the first two Alien films equally, but the white-knuckle factor in Aliens is far superior.

Dark City - To this day, I can't tell anyone what it's about without spoiling it a little. The whole film just threw me for a loop.

Pitch Black - Sure, it's an Alien clone. But come on. Riddick.

Actually, the first Terminator did that. It's just not so blatantly obvious. In the original script for the Terminator, there was a lot more scenes and dialogue that points to a predestination paradox but James Cameron removed them because he thought that the audience was smart enough to figure it out.

Just like there are only runners-up to Firefly which is the Best Damn Series in the Whole Damn 'Verse and if anyone disagrees I'll challenge em to a duel with swords. (I don't need lessons from Inara either and my katana can slice, dice, julienne and fillet better than a Ronco Vegamatic.)

Not better than Serenity, but in their own selves really good films.

Aliens needs no further explanation.

I can't think any sci-fi fan anywhere in the world can possibly have been offended by Galaxy Quest. The gags were clever and aimed directly at geeks like you and me. Not as barbs, but delivered specially so that you actually got them all precisely because of your disorder. It was pretty much spot-on accurate in all respects (except the usual implausibilities. I mean, a lathe? Where's the realism in that?)

Alien and Bladerunner suffered from Ridley Scott disease - looks fantastic, but a bit slow.

James Cameron made my 2 favorite sci-fi flix of all time. Aliens, and The Abyss. I feel serenity is just as strong as those 2 movies.

Oh and Chrisisall, Planet of the Apes was a great movie, but have you ever watched the tv series? It may not be as strong, and epic as the movie, but it is very well done. It feels a lot like Kung Fu, (another great show from the 70's) except with apes. I think I'm gonna break out my dvd set tonight, and watch a few episodes.

Here's a list of my fave sci-fi flicks, in no particular order (except that 2001 is still my All-Time Number One Sci-Fi Movie). Kick me into the engine, but it set the tone and broke the mold - if you can get through the 30 minute acid trip at the end, that is... :)

2001: A Space Odyssey. I was fortunate enough to get to see this in the theater when it opened in 1968. I was 6 years old, and I'd never seen anything like it. LIttle did I know, NOBODY had ever seen anything like it before! For Stanley Kubrick to read Arthur C. Clarke's short story "The Sentinel", and then to imagine something as grandiose as "2001" just from that, is concrete evidence that he had access to waaaaayyyy better drugs than I've ever gotten my hands on! ;)

2010: The Year We Make Contact. Not necessarily my second favorite, but it really should be seen together with 2001. I "simplifies" things a bit, and explains them using words instead of just imagery. Call it 2001 Lite, dumbed down for the masses.

Blade Runner. This is at least my second favorite sci-fi flick. I just love the way it mixes the Sam Spade-like film-noir gumshoe genre into the sci-fi mix. One of Harrison Ford's best acting jobs, simply because it *uses* his deadpan way of delivering a line to its advantage.

Star Wars. The original, first one made. Like 2001, it simply broke the genre wide open. And, also like 2001, no one had ever seen anything like it before. Again, I was fortunate enough to see it on the big screen when it came out. Ever see the episode of "That 70s Show" where they go see Star Wars? Yeah... we were really like that. It had me from the very first scene.

Alien. And "Aliens" (the sequel).

Silent Running. A little-known but hugely visionary look into every tree-hugger's worst nightmares.

Brazil. When you think things are really bad, and that the government's out to get you, this film shows that it's really much, much worse. And funnier.

The 5th Element. Really odd movie, very weird, but very likable. People tend to either love it or loathe it.

The Road Warrior. $3 for a gallon of gas got you down? It could be worse - far worse!

The Matrix. Why, oh why did they have to so completely ruin this story with such horrible sequels? It just goes to prove that there's no movie so "special" that Hollywood can't completely bollocks it up by trying to cash in on it. And I was stupid enough to pay to see BOTH sequels, so the joke's on me. :(

Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn. This one stands out as the best of the Star Trek movies, by far.

So... which ones did/do I like better than "Serenity"? Probably only 2001, Blade Runner, and Star Wars. Call the others "Honorable Mentions", but they're still great sci-fi movies.

Serenity is in the top league with Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Blade Runner, and Akira. Probably GitS too, and Alien. It's certainly the best scifi in recent times, no contest whatsoever. 2001 is another great but it's so . . . different I have trouble lumping it with these.

I'll agree with those saying Wrath of Khan is the best of the Star Trek movies . . . and it's a good film, a significant cut above all the rest . . . but I don't personally hold it in this league. Somewhere just below. My two cents at least.

I am disappointed that none of you mention Forbidden Planet! I am nowhere near old enough to have seen it in the theater, but that movie still gives me chills when I see it. As far as storyline goes, it ties with Serenity.
As far as visual concepts, Serenity wins.
Hmm, Commander John Adams (a much younger and seriouser Leslie Nielsen) vs Captain Malcolm Reynolds. Tough call...
And Robbie the Robot!
Now, all of you go rent it and leave me in peace with my Firefly DVDs...

Always only one #1 to me...

Star Wars: back when Snaggletooth was the original Hut. In fact, the whole trilogy in my mind is merged as 1 single film. No Empire or Jedi separate from the 1st flick. In spite of the last 3 miserable installments,

Close 2nd: Matrix (I can easily forget those 2 tacky sequels ~ should have been a 1 act play).

Sorry, Chrisisall. I share your enthusiasm for Blade Runner, but IMO 2001: A Space Odyssey is still the best science fiction film that has ever been made (to this date, I won't judge Serenity 2 until I see it). Also, notice I said science fiction. I can't stand using that "skiffy" term.

In the humor department, my 2 favorite scifi flicks are:

(1) Starship Troopers (and I'm a Heinlein fan... that's the first and probably last time I've ever seen a movie outshine the book it was based on) (and the original book wasn't meant to be humor)

(2) GalaxyQuest (and I absolutely hated the Trekkie mockumentaries starring the embittered and disgruntled Tasha Yar "Denise Crosby", ~ it was entertaining, but grossly misrepresentative of Trekkies). Denise Cosby quit Trek thinking it was Nerd fodder, then later cashed in on her mistake by attacking the same fans she hated. "Die nerds Die!! Just make sure I get a paycheck in the process."

I'm happy to see some mentions of BRAZIL on here. This flick always struck me as the love child of George Orwell and Monty Python. It's as frightening as it is funny. I heard that during it's whole controversy, a few people at Universal saw the film and it really affected them. Like a lawyer wouldn't come out of his office for days on end, and a secretary had burst into tears after watching it.

The one scene that really stuck out in my mind was when Sam first arrives at Information Retrieval and he's swept up in that crowd of lackeys swarming around the boss who keeps interrupting his welcome speech with "YES", "NO" and the like. And when they get thos his "office" he goes. "Your very own number behind your very own door. And behind that door your very own office. Congratulations, DZ-019. Welcome to the team." And then his office is more of a broom closet with only half a table, which keeps moving to the other room.

It was that moment that made me forever determined never to take an office job and become an office drone.

Strangely enough, I've never seen "Brazil". Always been meaning to, but never got around to it.

Orwell's "1984" and the film version of it creeped me out to no end. I suspect this film will probably be more of the same.

I hate "1984" but I watch it the same way a person stares at a carwreck when they are passing it by. Don't want to see it, but can't take their eyes off it. Didn't want to see Brazil up until now.

I find myself compelled to rectify things, and will go watch it in short order.

Hell... one of my alltime fav flicks is "A Clockwork Orange". Not cuz I love the gratuitous ultraviolence! I just love the "X" rating. We nicely did away with it by inventing "XXX" ratings.
