Serenity up to #3

As of thurs 12/15 at 4pm ..Serenity is at #3 and Firefly(the series) is at #12 on Amazon.com's top sellar list...
This is significant for several different reasons..
1. They are both competing against some hugely popular titles(March of the Penguins,Revenge of the Sith,Madagascar,Lost season 1,Family Guy vol. 3,Seinfeld,Simpsons,Oprah,40 year old Virgin etc....)
2. Firefly came out 2 years ago and Serenity has not been released yet.. All of the other titles in the top 20 have already somewhat recently been released..
3. A cobination of #1 and #2 and its current rankings on the Amazon top seller list (amongst others)should be opening some eyes..
4. My understanding from a Whedon interview as recently as Dec 10th 2005 is that the future of the Firefly/Serenity franchise depended on the success of the DVD sales (i dont want to hear that the movie killed hopes of any sequels ) I am going by Whedon's words as of Dec 10th of this month...From what I can tell the DVD is already on its way to being successful so what is next??

Joss himself said it - DVD sales are going to be key in determining the future of our beloved 'verse. If we keep it up, that future could be shiny, indeed.

I noticed that today as well. It is right behind Star Wars. That is great advertising right there! I search amazon all the time to look for rentals and movies to see at the $1 theater.

although a lot of trolls (any of ya visit the imdb boards?--jeez) like to consider serenity a flop, i kinda view it as the little engine that could. (crosses fingers). ah, wouldn't it be nice if serenity becomes a dvd blockbuster (no pun intended), warranting a...dare i say it?...sequel? (crosses fingers harder).

Thanks for the update, I'm one of those that's just plannig to run out and buy it on Tues. instead of ordering it. Getting it in the store gives me a chance to run around holding it up and screaming, or something to get others to look at it. I was just wondering if you or anyone else could post a link to the top sellers. I'm curious how another cult "tv show" with a recent movie is doing. Are the Aeon Flux DVDs anywhere to be seen in the top sellers? Just interested in comparing.

Firefly is Amazon.com's 16th bestselling DVD for the whole of 2005. It was 61st in 2003 and 60th in 2004 (It was released 9th December 2003). Can't be sure but I'd guess that it has sold more copies because of Serenity than it did because of airing on Fox.

Yeah, and people are still quoting that "500,000 Firefly sets sold" figure, which was the total BEFORE 2005.

So I'd have to guess the Firefly set has at least topped 1.5 million sold by now.

Possibly. If you look at Haken's Amazon sales tracker, "Firefly" got to the number one spot based solely on pre-orders, but by about six months after its release it had dropped into the 100s, where it remained until the Serenity trailer was released online in April 2005. That day, it shot from around 150 to 93, and by the next day it was in the 20s. From then on, it's almost never dropped below the 20s. With such a long period of high sales, it's possible "Firefly" has sold more copies due to the Serenity buzz than before the BDM talk started up.

It isn't that shiny in Germany I'm afraid. They released the Firefly Box just a few weeks ago (somewhere in November). One tv channel bought the rights to send it some time ago but obviously it's too risky for them to actually air it.

At Amazon Germany the box is listed at 168, the BDM DVD is not announced yet. I guess they will release it in summer 06 (it always takes that long here).

Cleaner, I don't think the rip is a bad thing. Personally, I got into firefly because i stumbled over the series on the net having never heard of it... watched the first 2 episodes, then was heartened to find that K-Mart here had it for $50 AU!! bought it in a shot :)

I really think this is one of those movies people will get for the extras as much as the movie itself too, the people involved are just too damned cool!

Me too I downloaded Serenity on the net and Firefly too. Now I'm a really big Fan and I'll buy the DVD's for sure, even if I have all the extras. I'll buy them to hope that there will be a sequel to the series if they got enough cash.

Seriously, best news I've heard all day. I mean, doing this good on pre-order! Way to go! I'll be one of those camped outside our Blockbuster the morning its released. I honestly can't wait for our impossibly slow mailman to drop it off. And did you all look at Firefly and Serenity's rating compared to the other hits? Come on, that's got to get some notice by picky movie/tv critics, too. The more sales, the better. I know what I'm giving for Christmas presents this year, that's for sure!

Seriously, this IS great. Firefly is now number 11, and lost (you know - the super mega popular show that every executive loves because of the income) is number 10. Shouldnt that ring a huuuge bell for the decision makers?

Please keep in mind that the Amazon list is the top selling movies for the DAY, so DVDs mentioned in this post (Madagascar, March of the Penguins, etc.) that have already been released are not likely to sell as many copies on the same day as a pre-order.

Still, seeing Serenity at #3 is great news. :)

It's changed. Firefly's now at 11. Sadly, Serenity has dropped to #4, behind both versions of March of the Penguins (WHY IS THIS MOVIE GETTING SO MUCH CREDIT?!?!?!?!? IT WAS BORING!!!) and Star Wars. Overall, it's the #3 movie, #4 seller.

AND I just saw an ad for the 'Serenity' DVD on TV,
it was short, but looked great....

Tonight 'Firefly' is on Sci-fi, I hope they'll run ads too

but I have to say, I didn't find 'March of the Penquins' boring at all
but I wasn't that excited about that Sith movie...

Be more positive people..Its hard for me to accept that the strong sales #s for Firefly/Serenity has any negative side to it....I am not confident that the franchise will go on , I am hopeful.. I think there is evidence of a recent popularity boost for Firefly/Serenity...I am evidence of this , I first watched the show on Dec 1st of this month and last night i saw Serenity for the 2nd time at a lex KY theatre..I have also turned 5 or 6 people onto the show in just the last week..I think the # of fans has increased dramatically in just the last 60 days...
I have a question for the person who posted the message about serenity being a pre-order and that is why it should be selling better dailly on Amazon then DVD's that have already been released(i think that was the jist of it).. I have 2 questions really #1 How does that explain the Firefly DVD success(#11)?
#2 How come there are no other pre-orders on the top-sellar list if pre-orders always sell more then released titles??

Regardless I am encouraged by the DVD #'s.Remember it does not have to be the best selling DVD of all time it just needs to make the Film a financial success...
Though i think i could live with it being #1...

You might warn Mom and Pop that if there's any other rental places in the area that don't appreciate the competition putting things on the shelf before street date, they might get reported to the studio. Mom and Pop could be fined a few grand, or not receive future Universal releases untill long after street date.

I recently saw the television advertisement for the Serenity DVD. It is excellent - attention grabbing, intriguing, makes you want to see the complete story. If this sort of advertising had been part of the campaign for the theatrical release, I believe the Serenity box office take would have been millions higher.

The Firefly set has been in the top five at Amazon for the past few months. It's only recently that it fell out of the top 10.

In fact, the Firefly set is the number 12 overall best seller for the entire year.

Hi, just a little fyi.. a friend got a copy of Serenity last week and I went to watch it. Guess what?? It was only 3/4 of the screen and the vetical lines kept going round and round. I was glad because I don't want the show to be copied. I would rather fans buy it and perhaps with the sales we could get Firefly back on the air. So beware of the dvd copies, 2 of them are no good so far.
