I took the FF character test, and I'm Wash, so that might give me some perspective.
Writers tend to play toward thier darker predelections, and in a story, I, personally, would be inclined to sacrifice myself in service to the tale (life).
Which leads me to believe that in killing Wash, Joss killed a part of himself in there, too.
Any who believe that's an easy choice on the part of a creator can go rent Star Trek 3, as heartfelt as it is, it's still revisionist junk.
Joss chose a hard, but truthful path, as he did with Joyce in Buffy.

I always come out as Inara, which is disturbing in so many ways....
but I definitely think that Wash was Joss' alter ego, and killing him off was a sacrifice he only made because he knew it would be all or nothing at all in the BDM

I thought I was going to be Mal, but ended up with Kaylee Not that I don't love Kaylee, she is one of my favorites. But I consider myself "a good fighter" (since I am a very talented boxer lazy but very fast), I thought even if i didn't make it to River, Mal or Jayne, at least I would be Book or even Simon. There's no doubt that it was a hard choice. But Joss is a storyteller, and unlike so many who abuse the "death-of-a-major-character" card, Joss made the right choice.

I'll explain (and again, this is nothing more than the view from a storyteller's aspect):

Most of the time, the death of a character is nothing more than a try to pull the strings of the audience's hearts. For some reason the only instance I can think of is the Final Fantasy movie (if you've seen it, you know what I mean). Totally useless, and lends nothing to the plot other than completly ruining an already poor story. Serenity is different. If Wash had lived, there would not have been a greater sense of danger for the rest of the crew in the following scenes. By killing off the character you least expect to die, it's almost as if Joss is saying, "Guys, the crew is in serious danger. See Wash? I'm not fucking around here." And it works. On first viewing, I honestly thought Simon and Kaylee were as good as dead. Any other movie would have killed off someone closer to Mal, like Zoe, or even Jayne. The audience would have accepted that as the crew's toughest moment for the rest of the film. Instead, you're left saying, "Wash?! But c'mon, it's WASH! He plays with plastic dinosaurs for gorram sake!"

I don't know how many things I have had spoiled for me on Buffy by people posting spoilers in Wash topics, but it's really annoying. Nice test. I got Simon 80% / Wash 80%; Kaylee 75% / Zoe 75%; Inara 70%, not bothering to list the rest. And I'm not surprised.

As for the theory... interesting. I know the first time I saw the movie (never having seen the show) his death hit me like an emotional sledgehammer, because I really started to feel for the character only about thirty seconds before he died. So there I was, inwardly cheering, watching the relief of the crew that they'd landed safely, and suddenly... SLAM. Twelve-foot spike through the chest. I nearly felt as though I was the one dying. So if it was anywhere near as difficult for him to kill him off as it was for me to watch, poor Joss!

Ya Wash's death came as a shock for me too. I really didnt expect it. After it happened it was really a WHOA! moment because i watched firefly and loved Wash's comic side. I loved how he would make a joke to hide his concern. When he died in the show it was like what was Joss thinking? Maybe now though when Joss gets to do another show (pray...) Joss will have River start flying... hehe

I don't know which death was harder though, Wash's or Books. I really fell in love with Shepered Book in Firefly, he was the voice of reason. He really kept all the crew in-line. But Wash was the humor, aside from Kaylee and the often sarcasm from Mal Wash was the comic relief in the show and the Movie. Which makes it hard to think which one I will miss the most.

Life's short...Play hard.
The only worry in ones mind should be looking back on ones life and wondering what they did with it.

Since I saw the movie before the series, I didn't even know Book was a regular character. I hadn't gotten real attached to Wash either, but it made me believe Simon was going to die, and that got me all choked up (on River's behalf). Yes, Joss had to kill characters so you would appreciate their peril.

As I watched the series I kept saying "but I like that guy!" in reference to Wash. Sigh.

I'm always Simon when I take that test, although the second highest match varies. Today I must feel a little crazy, since River tied for second. Should I be concerned that I'm more Reaver than Wash? I mean, everyone's a little bit Reaver, but 35%?!

Jayne: I once hit a guy in the neck from 500 yards with a bent scope. Don't that count upstairs?

Also, with all due respect to Chris, I don’t think Joss’s choice was that hard, since it was made by Alan. Joss pretty much had to kill off Wash, because other wise he’d have to explain the new pilots, Coy and Vance, if the series ever came back, and that’s never good.

Book on the other hand Book might have been a hard decision, but still Joss is cold. I personally, think he got a thrill out of killing both of them.

wow..fun fun quiz!
I came back as Zoe 100% AND Kaylee 100%..same time..
I knew I was a little mix of the two..but it made me happy.
I think one of my favorite things about Firefly is Zoes' relationship with Wash..they did such a wonderful job of conveying such deep emotional attachment..I just loved watching them interact.
I have actually put off seeing Serenity..'cause I just can't bear to see Wash go yet..aren't I a freak!
I miss the series like crazy..I have never been a fan of sci-fi before..my husband totally got me hooked on Firefly

huh... I came out kinda like River, Zoe, Kaylee & Book all-of-'em-mushed-together, like this:

I also find it interesting that I'm 25%, both, a reaver & Alliance (and both tendencies stronger than Jayne-ness)... maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the cannibalism thing... well, in all honesty, I didn't but, having strong River tendencies, I projected that the test would "think" that. Maybe.

Anyway the result is appropriate as River's, indeed, my favorite character on this crew - even if the others have all the cool retorts. I mean, when, way back when FF was still on the air and only just a few episodes old, I'd decided that she would become the show's focus because the signposts for her character-arc indicated she was the next step in the evolution of humanity. That's what I decided... for what it's worth.

Now this makes me think... there's a great deal of conversation between posters about their identification with this, that or the other crewmember, but I don't think I find too many posters having too much to say about, or identifying with, Inara and, I think she's had - over the span of the series & the BDM - an ever-increasingly interesting character-arc, one that has the potential to make her an evermore-indispensable part of the crew. I remember in Joss's commentaries during the BDM DVD's extra-scenes section, how she came to him after most of her scenes were cut, concerned that she "just sucked." But my point is that the show would be HUGEly diminished without her and I, for one, would be unhappy to the point of devastation if she weren't part of the BDS/series. in fact, we'd ALL be better off if there were more Inara's in our lives
