Hey UnregisteredCompanion - another brewer! I started getting into brewing mead a few years ago, it's so fun! I just did a pomegranite, weird but may be very good in a few years.

Really I'm a geophysicist: seismic waves, earthquakes, oil exploration, environmental stuff. A lot of code writing, a little visiting cool places.

It pays the bills, but I'd rather do physics based animation, or sell home brew mead, or dance with Mark Morris, or write episodes of the new Firefly series... oh sorry, I must have slipped into an alternate universe for a second there.

Administrative Assistant in a bank, which means I do a little of everything-from the ATM to processing loan paperwork, answering the phone, to calming cusotmers down.

UNC-Chapel Hill BA in American Studies-couldn't decided on English (American Lit) or American History and I discovered American Studies-no one has ever made any money in it except a few authors , people that go on to law school or Katie Couric.

Also former sergeant in the US Army-in computers though and I ended up being the tape librarian.

BTW I always thought I'd be a librarian. I could live in one forever and have volunteered in one for years. Love the internet-it's like one vast library .

Forgot to add that I'm a single Mom that was guided to the 'verse by my daughter.

Former manager of Kitchens & Bath Design & sales, Appliances (Home Depot)--also well versed in Millworks--Windows & Doors. I can operate a forklift, reachtruck, order picker, and an electric pallet jack--and was a trainer for each at one point. I was the gal surrounded by the male spotters while I did the heavy overhead lifting & dropping of side by side refrigerators--so very rewarding & shiny! Would so love to tackle Serenity's "Mule" & take it for a spin...
Ah, those were the days. Quit my job to homeschool the kids--who suffered from my 55-60hr work week & to escape the Nardelli that took over what once was a wonderful place to work. I also do comp. graphics, iridology, and study graphology as well as theology--in my spare time. Cheers!

Air Traffic Controller, since 1986. Before that, singer in rock bands for nigh on ten years. Some people consider that an odd change of profession; but I don't. There's very little difference between guiding an audience with your voice, and guiding a skyful of planes with your voice. Modulation, pitch, tempo, stress and emphasis are tools in both kits. Only the languages differ, and anybody can learn those, since they're both based on English, heh-heh...

I deal w/ 20 kids every day, 20 different personalities, having to figure out how to deal w/ all of their differences,it always fun ,I love it.

A lot more fun than making oodles of money in front of the computer. Not that I wouldnt mind the oodles.

back in college i made a mad-max-type picture called 'the persistence of human compassion on a nuclear winter's eve' where i almost set my '76 mercury capri on fire.

my 'lab partner' and i made a movie about a guy who proposes to, then dumps, this girl. she ends up slitting her wrists right before he changes his mind and calls her on the phone to ask her to take him back.

turns out his fiance dumped *him* the semester before and the movie was like his therapy to get over it. got kinda uncomfortable there in editing toward the end as that stuff started coming out!

finally, i helped some neighborhood kids make a sci-fi movie last summer with a lot of disappearing in it, ala bewitched.

so, do you have to deal with sarbanes oxley?

To the guy who said he's studying video game programming in college, I have some advice for you:

1. Have a solid grasp of how to debug with tools that people actually use, which means MS Dev Studio. This is terribly important. No debug, no job, no exceptions.

2. You’ll be interviewed by people who have been in the business for years, have published many games, are probably self taught and have just under zero respect for that degree you’re pursuing. So don’t walk in like you know anything because honestly, you don’t. What we’re looking for in a junior programmer is your potential to learn on the job and your ability to get along with people in stressful situations.

3. Have a relevant demo. What do I mean by relevant? When you get out of school you will not be hired as a core engine tech programmer. You just won’t, so deal with it. We really don’t care that you have a cube bouncing off a wall because we already have a collision detection system. What you should do instead is use the SDK from something like Unreal or HL2 and put together a 1-map mod of actual gameplay. Why? Because you will most likely go to the gameplay/level scripting team as your first job, so mod=job.

As for what I do for a living, uh, take a guess :)

Planning on staying in longer than required (6 years, right?)? Have they given you any idea what you'll be doing after you graduate? Have you been to BMTS or any other training schools yet? Any lingering dreams of being a pilot? Okay, that's a lot of questions, but I really enjoyed my time in service, and I hope you will too.

Everytime they go outside, they about rupture a rotator cuff. So don't cry to me about having to salute, Airman. I plan on staying in the 20yrs and retire. Ill put in for jobs my Junior year wo two more years. Ill go to "Field Training" the college version of boot next summer, and tech school and ots and the like after i get to my first assignment. And yes i want to be a pilot just like about 60% of the people in ROTC lol, I want to be a pilot and am going to try for it, but i understand where I stand and my chances so im not getting my hopes up. But no matter what i do in the USAF i know ill like it unless im a TI (please God no!!!) hehe.

Currently, I'm working in the Shipping department of a brass forging plant, primarily maintaining the warehouse. My training and job experience is in Inventory Control, especially in a manufacturing workplace (I worked for an RV company). I tracked on-hand inventory and work-in-process.

Think of a huge jigsaw puzzle, except that you also have to account for a time factor. To make an RV at my old job, you'd need the tires about a day and a half to two days before you'd need the window curtains. And those are two parts out of around 500 that make up a camping trailer.

Well, I just (about 2 weeks ago) finished my thesis, so as of right now I have my Master's in physics and am looking for a job! :)

I have been unemployed since November 10th (though I have a job interview today -- hooray! Keep your fingers crossed!)

For 17 years I worked for the #1 School Library Software company (you librarians may know which one) My first four and last six years there were in Technical Support. The middle seven were as a Software Test Engineer.

Prior to that, I worked in a sewing factory (a.k.a. sweatshop)and a factory.

I got annoyed with slogging for other people's dreams a few years ago (management, development of training programs), so now I exercize my options. I usually work 3 days a week in a little shop, I barter skills, knowledge and sweat with several groups of people, and I paint, mostly in oils, and make things: textiles, wood, metal, paper blah blah (which brings income). Currently I'm learning computer applications to sail the art thing out into the black, and I'm trying to figure what/where else to juggle so I can keep this independent thing in the air for the long haul. Because I like it a lot, but I need a big people component to replace the kick I got from teaching/training, and retirement accounts must be regularly fed.

Dang, I spent 12 days on Isle Royale a long time ago. It's gorgeous; silent, pristine, right up there with the Boundary Waters in terms of northern beauty. Jumping off a dock into Superior was a maybe a bad idea though, ~55 degree water, ouch.

I have a degree in Agronomy (farming), and when I can find it work as an agriculture inspector (look for bad bugs, sick plants, count bugs, look for weeds). I live in South Dakota, so I don't work so much in the winter time. Hoping that will change soon, tho.

Guess I'd be happy on the outer planets..doncha think??

I am a student in the initial stages of a PhD in biblical studies and book history.

I gave up real work (adult ed trainer & administrator) because I don't get on with bosses very well. Like a true browncoat i have authority issues.

If I ever get over that problem I would quite like to work in a ...library! A posh one though, archiving very old books. I want to be Giles!!! *sobs in corner at realisation that Giles isn't real*

Hell, everyone here has such cool jobs! It's impressive and a very entertaining read!

I am a low-level office slave in a small software/real estate company, and am about to drop out of a translating degree program. I might study Museology in the future, or maybe I'll start a career as coffeeshop girl, it's undecided.

Anything that pays the bills while I live a life of irresponsible leisure and fannish obsession, really.

My favorite real life hobby is acting in student theater productions. If I could make money doing that for the rest of my life, I would, but c'est la vie. *g*

I'm a librarian, and just decided to delurk and join the party.

I manage one of the larger branches of our public library system, and supervise the manager of a smaller branch. I used to be the Reader's Advisory Specialist (aka fiction librarian), and was called 'The Goddess of All Things Fiction' by some coworkers. I'm not as up to speed on that anymore--too busy with administrative details, and not selecting fiction materials for the library these days--but this has been my online identity for the past 7 years, and I'm keeping it.

Went back to school in Physics switched to Math.

I would love to stay in academics, but I don't know if that is realistic. Might have to get another... real job. But, I am keeping my fingers crossed for grad school. Here's hoping.

Currently a UNIX/Solaris admin in the financial sector.

Entered geekdom by writing my first program for the Atari 800 in 4th grade. I Still own a working Atari 800XL in its original box with a big, orange "64K of memory!" sticker. Also have the flopy with my version of the Tron light cycle game and lots of other game disks. Havn't tried it in a few years though so I can't 100% vouch for the flopies still being readable anymore.

"Satellite Graphics Co-Ordinator". When I figure that one out...............anyway work for a company who produce grahics and polymer plates for the corrugated printing industry. I'm based with one of our customers and I basically co-ordinate (ie run around all day like a loony) trying to get what the customer wants when they want it. Trust me , the world may come to an end if those cardboard boxes don't get delivered. Apparently.

In spite of the random pirate attack, from which I escaped by cleverly pretending to be a window model, I'm really amazed at the variety we have here!

Someone said they're a cartoonist and then tried to tell us that it didn't take talent? Uh..I can draw a stick-figure if you give me a big enough pencil!

Raising goats? I raised goats as a kid (no pun intended). They're such fun clever animals!

Programmers, doctors, retail workers, did I see a bar-hand? Tending bar is one of the least appreciated jobs out there. I did it for one summer while in school.

Alot of people seemed to play down what they do, and did. DON'T! Everyone is doing something downright amazing that is beyond the capabilities of some of us.

Media Manager for a Fortune 500 company - mostly focused on our intranet and internet sites, but also handle board presentations, annual report, press releases and graphics standards and anything else our execs come up with. Every day is different and filled with challenges. Some less fun the others though.

I really love that there are so many different kinds of folks who come here. I've enjoyed reading what everyone does. Great thread.

By the way pinballwizard - good luck on the Firefly Pinball - that really would be shiny!

I am a senior in high school. I hope to either go on to colledge to get a degree or two in equine studies, and then own my own ranch, or to join the air force and become an officer. Mostly I'm vering toward the ranch, but it was my dream since I was little to be a officer. Every now and then I get this feeling that thats what I'm suposed to do, but alas my family would disown me, and a horse ranch is a good secound best dream.

My family gave me the nick name Knight, cause I can fence, I can ride 'orses, I can shoot well as any boy, and I can throw a Bowie strait and true. But I prefer my friends nick name, which is Bowie, cause I can throw one straite and true.

I play alto sax in the Mira Mesa Marching band, hope to be in Windensamble this year, seeing as its the last shot I got. I'm in Venture crew, and girl scouts. And I am a brown coat.

I’ve just finished a GAP year as an au pair. My first job was in France but I fled that, literally, and ended up in England looking after three young children who were all delights. Now I’m starting university in New Zealand to do a BA.

My majors as of this week (I’m indecisive ) are in Classical Studies and English literature but one of those may be changed to Philosophy.

NO idea what I’m going to do at the end of it all. Maybe move back to England and possibly try to get into publishing.

I was a librarian in my final year at High school. I loved every minute of it because all of us ‘volunteering’ had a slightly unconventional sense of humour. I converted four of them to the path of the Browncoat.

Anyone else thinking that we’ve got enough representatives of trades here to start our own civilisation…or cult… you know, which ever comes first

I work in a laboratory for a major biopharmaceutical company.

Firefly is/was a good show, but its hard to stay addicted to it seeing that there are no more episodes coming down the pipe. I have mined the show for everything its worth.

My new love is Battlestar Galactica! If some of you get the chance, check it out, but 1st start with the mini-series, and then work your way through season 1 and season 2....you WILL really like this.

The 1st episode of season 1 (33) is the hook that will send you down the path to loving this show....watching the mini-series is just a way for you to get to know all the characters and their situations that form the story.
