Whilst reading my many star wars forums i encounterd a TROLL saying firefly the movie would pwn STAR WARS EPISODE III. This was ridiculous and i prombtly reported him to an moderator to be banned almost immediantly.

But while i was in the bath washing myself, i started thinking, FIREFLY SUCKS. Thats right, of course i saw it on its original run on fox and wasn't very impressed there was so many errors in it for example

WHY ARE THEY ALL WESTERN western went extinct 48 YEARS AGO they wont have revolvers in space, WHere are the lasers??, if they dont have lasers how will they have spaceship fights in space?.

homosexuality has no place in the future, Why dont they have special machines to alter peoples brains and push the homosexuality out of people like they do in star trek. I say this because SIMON is so obviously gay it offends me dont misunderstand me im not a bigot or anything i just think gays Should be put in degayment camps is all.

The alliance is just a shameless ripoff of the empire in star wars, just the same as malcom reynolds is a pathetic watered down version of han solo.

yes furhtermore i think that it hilarious that you think serenity could ever make more then a few measly million at the box OFFICE. STAR WARS WILL OWN IT LIKE VADAR PWNED THOSE LITTLE KIDS IN EPISODE III.

bwahhahahahahah

i am a star wars fan, but Firefly is clearly a superior product to the current batch of star wars films. star wars certainly has the better special effects but has nothing to say. it does not hurt they sunk 400 million into episode 3 either.

and about originality, Star Wars is drawn from various sources as well. Desert planets, futuristic sword fighting, mystical religions, and yes even clones all came from Frank Herberts Dune books from the 1960's.

i do see influence from star wars in Firefly, mostly in stuff from the original film that never was explored in subsequent releases (and even altered in the crappy SE's). i like it there. i see more influence in Firefly from Blade Runner than Star Wars and i like that even more.

Star Wars is marketed for kids who love muppets, happy meals and mass produced lines of commercialized crap. I was once a kid, but I'm not crazy about SW much these days. Folks grow up, and taste become more mature and advanced w/ age.

Star Wars is great, for little kids.

Serenity is for those who have grown up.

Word. And Mal Reynolds ALWAYS shoots first.

Honestly, I've been more and more retroactively dissapointed with SW Episode III. Of course there were the omnipresent prequel issues such as lousy dialogue, wooden acting and convoluted plotlines riddled with holes... "but at least you get to see Vader turn evil!" ... Meh. The prequels permenantly removed Vader's testicles and I will have a hard time seeing the original trilogy without thinking of Whiny Bitch Anakin.

Great link.

I already had problems with George's "plot twist" when Darth *really* was Luke's father and Obi Wan's previous comments were true "from a certain point of view." Argh! Way to ruin a great iconic figure.

The abysmal plotting spiraled out of control in Ep I when it was revealed Anakin was conceived out of thin air. Don't even remember the rest of *that* movie. Never saw the second in theatrical release. Finally rented the DVD when I went to see Ep III, just so I wouldn't miss any of the supposed story thread. Ah, that would be none.

Ep III? So very sad...when a good story wastes away into bullet points on a coroporate memo.

Right on dude.

Big Dune fan here and I've always said the same thing regarding Star Wars.

Regarding Firefly coping SW: The first time I ever watched the pilot episode I noticed that after Book says to Kaylee "She don't look like much" in regard to Serenity her response was "Ohh..she'll fool ya" Those lines were slightly similar to Han's comments to Luke after Luke denounces the Falcon as a piece of junk. "She might not look like much but she's got it where it counts kid".

Not saying anybody copied star wars lines...maybe just inspired by them. Joss always says that he finds inspiration everywhere.

I still think that Firefly is utterly superior.

Do not fear me. Ours is a peaceful race, and we must live in harmony.

As for some scenes in Star Wars being inspired by other sources, has anyone seen Lensmen? It's an Anime from sometime in the 70's. When I was told that Lucas had been inspired by the movie I watched it again, and I could see the scenes that had been borrowed and redone in the movie.

I realize that the troll board isn't the best place to continue a thread, but oh well. :)

Firefly beats Starwars hands down anyway.

When I think of Star wars Now vs the original 3... it makes me hurt inside. I LOVE the original three pics. Great story, believable characters (at least for space opera :) ) it was magic. I'd watch them over and over, I got goosebumps the first time they came back to theatres in 97' (as I had not gotten to see episode 4 in theatres... unless mom whent when I was in the womb :D))

I must say though, Ol'd Darth Neck-skin (lucas) really lost the roots of what made those movies great when he started churning out the crap that is the current gen of Star Wars movies.

Now onto Firefly. One word.

Wow.

It was incredible to find a show that I enjoyed on par with the original Star Wars films. Wonderful character development, gripping stories and action, and a hefty dose of intelligent humor. It was if the almighty spoke on high, "BEHOLD! FIREFLY!"... and it was good.
I'm a recent convert to the Browncoats and I cast aside YEARS of undying loyalty to my old Han and Chewie to have FireFly's 'Verse usurp them to become my FAVORITE sci-fi of ALL TIME.

Endorsing trollers is not a particularly appealing past-time for me, but I know some of you who are scanning through this posting will Identify with what I'm talking about here.

I definitely agree with you, SaintJayniac! I, too, grew up loving Star Wars and still love and re-watch the original 3 movies. The current 3 have such glaring plot holes and inconsistencies that it's quite disappointing.

Firefly now... On New Year's Eve I went to a friends house and we watched both Serenity and SW3. Serenity surpassed SW3 by such a huge margin. Good story; enjoyable, creative, funny dialogue; just an all-around good time. SW3 seemed incredibly melodramatic and hugely overdone.

Bottom line: I love Firefly. I dunno if Mal or Simon can *quite* replace Luke in my heart, but that's only because Luke was my first movie 'crush'. In all other ways, Firefly has taken first place in my heart.

The main point and major flaw of Star Wars Episode 1 -> III is the bad acting. I don't know about you, but there is not one single character in the new ones I find cool. Now the old ones, I thought Han Solo was the coolest. That is why since Serenity got me hooked, I have been quite displeased with the quality of the new Star Wars movies. Such shoddy acting, no believable character development, and character interaction is pretty much non-existant. The main thing I like about Firefly is the bickering between the characters. Reminiscent of ol' Han Solo and the other characters in the old trilogy. I am sure the kids loved all the pretty special effects in the new Star Wars trilogy, but I have become, through the past few years more inclined to character development. Firefly > Star Wars period.

Amen! I have to agree. One of the things I missed most in the newer Star Wars as opposed to the older ones was the dialogue between the characters. I know, I know, some of the lines in the old ones were a bit cheesey, but you really got the feeling that these characters knew each other and had a lot of history together. While I do like Ewan MacGreger as Obi Wan (about the only character I really liked in the new ones), they just can't compare.

And Firefly! I'm watching the series again for the 4th time in order (in less than a month), and even though I know what's coming next I still can't wait for the next line of dialogue!

We're gonna explode? I don't wanna explode!

I tend to think that comparing Firefly/Serenity with Star Wars is like comparing Lord of the Rings (books) to Sword of Truth. Same genre; different stories. Just because something is SciFiction, doesn't mean that Star Wars is pinnacle to which it must be judged. Also, though I could have missed it, I have seen no comparisons of Firefly to The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (THE most referenced Western epic). If comparisons within genres are to be made, something along this line must be done to validate the other. Otherwise, The 'Verse is the 'Verse; take it for what it is: Absolutely shiny!

i agree with brownfieldcoat. Serenity/Firefly has all the shiny goodness about it that we browncoats love, but lacks the ten-digit production cost. Star Wars is all about "Make it look ver, very, cool." They did that, and they either blew their budget and couldn't hire good actors, or George Lucas sucks at writing scripts now. Don't get me wrong, I willingly admit that I carry a lightsaber under my brown coat, but the more recent Star Wars movies were crap. II, III, and half of I all were....not so good. The only good thing about I is Qui-Gon Jinn, double-bladed lightsabers, and very shiny starships. Jar-Jar managed to counteract all, of them combined. II & III were just bad. Stick with the original trilogy.

The sad thing is, the old special effects felt more real then the new all cg ones. Must be something about having models that actually have three dimensions. Firefly, Serenity I should say, on the other hand, was so faithful to the design that I couldn't tell when they switched from digital to Model (The "I'm gonna have to glide her in." "Can she do that?" scene.)

On the subject of Green screen:

Why is it that the actors in Sin City, a film done entirely in green screen, had more acting believablity then Episode I-III, where half the time the actors were on a green screen set reacting to nothing. I think the issue lies in the Actors (And this has for years been an issue with green screen) having no damn imagination. Just act for crisakes, you've done it when you were a kid with no one around, just pretend!

Meanwhile, Serenity uses almost every practical effect it can get it's hands on, particularly the hover mule/Reaver chase.

Also, how is it that a guy from New Zealand can make a horrid little cursed hobbit and a giant gorilla seem more life like and believable as actors/characters then a retarted man-child alien?

I place blame on the director not being able to inspire his cast. That group of actors have an immense amount of talent, just watch any of their other works.

Uh, okay, I'm pissed.
Simon isn't gay, and if you did your research, he got it on with Kaylee (who is very much a woman) a couple of times. Literally, nevertheless.

Secondly even if Simon WAS gay, Mr. Whedon went for a future that had all cultures and beliefs amalgamated (hence the chinese phrases and instruments in the opening song for the show). Which means that even if Simon was gay, he'd be welcomed (you should see the Trash episode).

Firefly is unique, and although there aren't BORING lasers in gunfights as much as you would get off on, there are still lasers (again, in the Trash episode). There are also plenty of laser-type stuff in other episodes.

And so what if westerns went out of date "48 years ago"? so did Star Trek.

Do your reasearch, watch some episodes, watch the freaking movie. Star-wars has nice themes of good and evil, but Firefly, well, at least we can relate to it. The characters are more engaging, and the story is more open-ended.
